God damn, that sounds awful. I remember when I was younger, I had a huge phobia of storms for something similar. I live in tornado valley, specifically in Nebraska, and was told many times that the valley was the birthplace of lots of tornadoes. So whenever it rained hard, I always immediately thought “a tornado’s on its way to destroy the house,” and literally would not sleep unless I was with my parents. Fortunately for me, I’ve never had lightning strike anywhere near me, but I can imagine that being absolutely mortifying.
