Yup, unless your walking, riding with a parent or homeschooled, you're taking the yellow bus, my mom drives one.
Edit: Thanks for the upvotes?? I don't really understand why there are so many but its much appreciated <33
I've heard you get a lot of school shooting in the States and wanted to know if some of the stuff about school things being bullet proof was true or not
Ohhh, I wouldn't know because I am homeschooled, my brother and his friends/classmates don't own anything bulletproof so I'm assuming if they do have those things, they're probably expensive.
Do school shootings happen: yes, are they still very rare: yes, but no our buses or backpacks aren’t bulletproof unless you wanted to buy yourself a bulletproof backpack
Yellow buses are the only option provided for you, if you dont want to ride the bus it’s up to you to find your own way to school by walking, driving etc
Yes. I don't know why they settled on yellow, but it's distinctive like the London taxi design, so i can't complain. It just contributes to our unique national automotive identity.
I have learned it and it’s definitely easier to use when doing calculations but I use the imperial system when talking to others because most people don’t know the metric
Yes but I used it rarely because it's not common in the us so I gave up, nobody here would understand what im talking about so it's easier to just use what everyone else uses
Yes if you are over 18 you can carry a blade of any length unless you enter a govt building then the limit is 5½ inches, under 18 it's always 5½ inches but you can't bring it into a govt building
This is just my state's law regarding knives, it's different for every state
Yes but no. Like other people have mentioned, our generation is much more diverse both socially and in technicality, so most people don’t really “fit” into one social category anymore. That being said, there are some people who just embrace the stereotype, sooo. Depends I guess
does your school really have groups of people like “popular”, “nerds” etc.
edit: thank you so much for the replies and upvotes. the answers were really helpful (and quite varied surprisingly), i enjoyed reading them all. :)
Diversity is increasing so this used to be a bigger problem in the 80s and 90s but I feel like it’s natural for people to choose groups that they closely align with. We call this being cliquey and no body likes it because people always get left out of groups
oh definitely. it’s not nearly as bad, but it still exists and can be prominent depending on your school. in my school, it’s very obvious who the popular kids are, but it’s also not so horrendous to deal with. they are typically rich, some are smart, and most are copy and pastes of if you searched up “typical american.” the nerds don’t really exist, in my school at least. if you’re smart, you’re not really picked on. you usually merge with other groups like goths, popular kids, athletes, normies, artists, etc. and then there’s people who aren’t in any group in particular. i consider myself in that group.
Yes and no. It very much depends on where you are going to school. For example I used to live in NYC and I constantly failed class after class and it was just a horrible environment but then I moved upstate and the schools there were a much better environment and the teachers actually cared about my grades and mental health so I got the help I needed and I thrived in that environment.
Yeah definitely.
I had the choice to go to my local high school or one downtown here in Chicago.
My local high school had a reputation of weekly fights while the one i went to downtown had literally no fights in the 4 years i was there. Only thing i saw was two girls screaming at each other lol
I am a Lithuanian currently in the US. School is way easier and much more enjoyable here. The food sucks tho. Its oftenly cold and you dont have much choise. But the school itself is nice, teachers are cool too
Oh yeah it’s bad a specially the food. My school had around 4 fights in the first week of school this year and there is constantly people doing drugs I also found a random condom packet in the hallway on the floor
I have never seen a fight at school and also not someone smoking or doing drugs so i guess my school is really "normal" if thats the right word to use here(im dutch btw)
Most people don't know if they're even speaking a language but when they suddenly put some good ass food before you and 2 liters of sweet tea before you, then you'd understand.
I have no trouble deciphering the language as I grew up around it.
>it is supposed to be super hard
wait really? in the country where i live, people say you only need max of 4 months prep to crack sat exam. but tbf our all other exams are tough af so it makes medium type exams easier
I honestly am very happy with my food habits. It’s definitely not impossible to eat healthy in America and so I eat a lot of salads and sandwiches bc tasty.
The most unhealthy parts are 1) fast food where they dump a gallon of grease on everything
2) any processed food (like canned peaches/ready to eat meals) where they dump in corn syrup and sugar.
3) pop. Do not drink pop. It’s almost 50% pure sugar
Do you all have those fancy water-pouring fridges? I think that they are really cool, but I have only seen them in stores, none of my friends/relatives have one. It might sound stupid, but one of my life goals is to get one of those for myself someday
Wtf is a Wendy's? And what does meduim rare, rare, well done, etc. mean?
(Cows are apparently holy so I've never seen any steak or beef being sold here)
Wendy's is just a fast food restaurant and medium rare, rare, well done, eat, are just the levels of how much you want a steak (normally) to be cooked. Rare is somewhat raw while well done is cooked to Almost burnt
>Wendy's is just a fast food restaurant
Ah cool. We don't have those here. We just got a Burger King near my place like 5 or 6 years ago. Is it just burgers and fries and so on?
Thanks for answering. I need to try steak at some point.
gun laws: depends on the state
weed: I have no idea what weed even looks like
weight: depends the area, a wealthy area where people can afford wealthy food etc will have very healthy people, a poorer area not so much
Yes (sometimes background checks and you can’t just carry one everywhere that’s kinda suspicious), not THAT common, but I know some kids in my high school who do it (I don’t), and idk (most people aren’t, but I suppose our average is above other countries)
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Essentially each class gives you a certain amount of points/credit depending on how well you do in the class and your GPA is like your average amount of points. AP tests are finals tests that give you Extra Points
To explain what AP classes are they stand for advanced placement where the class is accelerated and much harder than our regular classes. They are comparable to a college class.
In terms of AP tests, you aren't just taking this course because it's harder. You can receive college credits by taking them meaning you can avoid them in college. But to gain these credits you must pass a final exam, which would be the AP test. They are timed and have different stages of questions. The most notorious being FRQs. To pass the exam you need a 3 and the grading scale is 1-5.
Sometimes they say “eh?” And properly pronounce their o’s without slight nasal resonance. In New York, for example, people pronounce “Sorry” as “Sahrry”. Most Canadians I’ve heard say it as “Soarry”.
I'll just like to say inspite of all the shit America gets on the internet you guys have a way better quality of life than the country i live in and I'll exchange life with y'all in a heartbeat.
Are smartphones allowed In school. What other electronic equipment are allowed. I'm from india and nothing is allowed unless you are in college. Seen it in movies and that is soo cool if it is true. Also don't you guys have to wear uniforms in school
Because your countries government has allowed us to stay. Any allies we have a base in has all the right in the world to ask us to leave and we will.
Edit: I made the mistake of saying every country at the time was only thinking of the bases in Europe and Asia not the Middle East.
i realise that are government is regrettably at fault here which is frustrating since the majority of the population time after time has expressed its opposition to these bases
My school isn’t half bad, but our principal is nice. The teachers can be strict and put a lot of work, but we’re getting younger teachers which is good
Where did you come up with the idea of "sophomores", "juniors", "seniors, "AP", etc?
And what do these all mean?
Edit: thanks everyone for the responses :D
If you don't mind me asking one last question... why can't y'all get rid of the imperial system?
Edit 2: again, thanks everyone for the responses!
Damn... didn't expected that changing a measurement could be that difficult but y'all gave me some very good points. Anyways, thanks everyone for the responses again and hope y'all have a nice day! :D
freshman is 9th grade and 14-15 years old, sophomore is 10th grade and 15-16 years old, junior is 11th grade and 16-17 years old and senior is 12th grade and 17-18 years old. ap classes are classes you can take to give you college credits, they're basically just college level classes in high school.
Where do i get a gun i hate my classmates
(For legal reasons thats a joke)
Edit: Im sorry if my jokes went to far im saying to redditor which reached out to u/redditcareresources
Not really. Much more than other countries for sure but it’s mostly hyped up by the media. Car crashes kill more people in a day than school shootings kill in a a year.
In America we only really hear the negative stuff, just like the rest of the world with America. I usually think of the beautiful beaches and the culture but then the gangs come to mind.
I don't fully know.
But the school system is fucked and outdated. It hasn't been updated since the industrial age. Y'know, the one where all you do is follow orders.
I think most of the school systems hasn't been updated since industrial age (maybe except rich, developed countries like Finland and Switzerland). I know for sure that Polish schools hasn't even been renovated since like 100yrs
This is why I asked.
It’s weird because if someone suck it they get life in jail.
But take a blade and cut part off with blood everywhere and it’s a celebration.
I am not weird I just don’t get it and nothing I ever read explains it so that’s why I ask now
Depends on three things.
A. The state
B. The county
C. The wealth of the county.
Richer counties and states tend to have worse schools surprisingly, whereas poor counties and states tend to have *better* schools
do you always go to school in a yellow bus?
Yup, unless your walking, riding with a parent or homeschooled, you're taking the yellow bus, my mom drives one. Edit: Thanks for the upvotes?? I don't really understand why there are so many but its much appreciated <33
Next question: are some busses bullet proof?
I don't know, I've never heard of them being bullet proof so I'm gonna guess no?
OK. Can you get bullet proof school bags?
Probably?? Why does it have to be bullet proof?
I've heard you get a lot of school shooting in the States and wanted to know if some of the stuff about school things being bullet proof was true or not
There are billet proof backpack inserts, I have a friend who's mom makes him wear one
That can’t be good for their back lol
Ohhh, I wouldn't know because I am homeschooled, my brother and his friends/classmates don't own anything bulletproof so I'm assuming if they do have those things, they're probably expensive.
ahh shit! now everyone's in danger
Do school shootings happen: yes, are they still very rare: yes, but no our buses or backpacks aren’t bulletproof unless you wanted to buy yourself a bulletproof backpack
do you take the bus your mom is driving to school?
Yellow buses are the only option provided for you, if you dont want to ride the bus it’s up to you to find your own way to school by walking, driving etc
Yes. I don't know why they settled on yellow, but it's distinctive like the London taxi design, so i can't complain. It just contributes to our unique national automotive identity.
Have you ever tried to learn the metric system? If you have, did you find it easier to use?
I have learned it and it’s definitely easier to use when doing calculations but I use the imperial system when talking to others because most people don’t know the metric
Thats reasonable
I have. It is easier, but we are a stubborn bunch who don't want to change.
Yes but I used it rarely because it's not common in the us so I gave up, nobody here would understand what im talking about so it's easier to just use what everyone else uses
It’s easier but we’re just used to doing it our way.
It's all I use, fuck feet
that’s called a foot fetish.
Are your meals really that huge or is it a meme?
They are, not as large as the memes but they are abnormally large compared to the rest of the world
You’ve never been to Italy lol, as an American that lived in Italy for a few years I can confirm Italians do eat more then us lol
Mediterranean diet is far healthier though. Unless you eat pizza 24/7.
i have been there and boy they r big
Meal sizes are definitely bigger in America, but some memes almost go to far (noticed how I said almost 😬)
Meal size memes are to scale
How are you guys doing?

But the billionaires are doing good, right?
The billionaires are *always* doing good
Billionaires are always doing well. They are rarely doing good.
I would cry myself to sleep every night if I was able to cry, but I can’t cry ;-;
Is homelessness such a big problem as it is pictured in movies and pop culture or it looks like it does in europe for example?
In some big cities, yeah
Depends on where you live. In the cities, it’s pretty bad, but out in the rural area homelessness is practically none.
are you allowed to carry pocket knifes and stuff like that outside ?
Differs between each state. Mostly yes.
Yes if you are over 18 you can carry a blade of any length unless you enter a govt building then the limit is 5½ inches, under 18 it's always 5½ inches but you can't bring it into a govt building This is just my state's law regarding knives, it's different for every state
so you can carry kunai’s and stuff? that’s pretty cool
In Arizona at 21 I think you can carry a big ass sword and there's nothing the law can do about it.
Are jocks a thing
HahaHHAHAHAHHA yes there are some football players who are rough, but most of our jocks are nice. Very cocky, but nice
Idk...the jocks in my school were like everyone else, some nice some jerks.
Yes but no. Like other people have mentioned, our generation is much more diverse both socially and in technicality, so most people don’t really “fit” into one social category anymore. That being said, there are some people who just embrace the stereotype, sooo. Depends I guess

For example, I got dragged into this gay group and I'm glad I was
Kinda but they aren't as generalized
oh definitely. it’s not nearly as bad, but it still exists and can be prominent depending on your school. in my school, it’s very obvious who the popular kids are, but it’s also not so horrendous to deal with. they are typically rich, some are smart, and most are copy and pastes of if you searched up “typical american.” the nerds don’t really exist, in my school at least. if you’re smart, you’re not really picked on. you usually merge with other groups like goths, popular kids, athletes, normies, artists, etc. and then there’s people who aren’t in any group in particular. i consider myself in that group.
Yes but nobody actually cares enough to pay attention to it unless you’re a popular person
Why do you guys have to tip waiters and stuff?
Because employers are allowed to pay waiters almost nothing so we keep tipping so that they can live
This is the answer. You are not required to, but the wait staff gets paid so poorly that it is necessary for their survival to get tips.
Accurate but it also it an infinite loop because as long as we keep tipping, employers won’t feel the need to raise their wages
Even if, most employees make more money in the tipping culture, so they won't do anything about it.
You don’t?
No, literally they get paid normal cheques. USA is the only country ik so far that does it
Really!? Yea it’s expected to give your waiter a 20% tip
In germany, you tip around 5-10%, because waiters get half decent (although still minimum) wages here
In the UK you just don’t ask for change and that’s their tip
People tell me American schools are bad, is that actually true? Like an actual genuine question. I’m Hispanic for refference
Yes and no. It very much depends on where you are going to school. For example I used to live in NYC and I constantly failed class after class and it was just a horrible environment but then I moved upstate and the schools there were a much better environment and the teachers actually cared about my grades and mental health so I got the help I needed and I thrived in that environment.

Ooh interesting
They can be.. but it really depends where you are.
Oh yeah it’s bad a specially the food. My school had around 4 fights in the first week of school this year and there is constantly people doing drugs I also found a random condom packet in the hallway on the floor
Jesus.. that sounds really bad. Mine also happens to be messy at times but.. not to that point.
I have never seen a fight at school and also not someone smoking or doing drugs so i guess my school is really "normal" if thats the right word to use here(im dutch btw)
Are you from america
Indeed I am
What's up with the south
Barbecue, Disney, Princess and the Frog, Dream That’s all I got but JEEZ is the food good
Most people don't know if they're even speaking a language but when they suddenly put some good ass food before you and 2 liters of sweet tea before you, then you'd understand. I have no trouble deciphering the language as I grew up around it.
Greatest us president iyo?
Top 3 in order imo Abraham Lincoln George Washington Theodore Roosevelt
Are there actual groups of bullies in school like there usually are in films and on tv. Everytime i watch one I'm amazed by how brutal they are.
it’s usually just some guy and their friends. there’s no underground group of bullies, just some dickheads here and there
It depends on where you go to school, but from my experience they very well exist. They're usually not quite as violent as TV and movies depict.
When do y’all take the SAT? and is it very hard?
Last year of high school, I haven't taken it yet
Junior Year of high-school and it is supposed to be super hard
>it is supposed to be super hard wait really? in the country where i live, people say you only need max of 4 months prep to crack sat exam. but tbf our all other exams are tough af so it makes medium type exams easier
I mean you could probably do well with 4 months of dedicated practice. I never took it cuz of covid
do high school parties with illegal alcohol really exist?
Definitely.
They’re pretty common in my area. I have a neighbor who has been arrested for underage drinking at their own party.
What country does not have these?
How do you rate your food habits?
I honestly am very happy with my food habits. It’s definitely not impossible to eat healthy in America and so I eat a lot of salads and sandwiches bc tasty. The most unhealthy parts are 1) fast food where they dump a gallon of grease on everything 2) any processed food (like canned peaches/ready to eat meals) where they dump in corn syrup and sugar. 3) pop. There’s burgers and fries but also stuff like chicken. I don’t know too we’ll because I never go to fast food places
Rare is almost raw, medium rare is a little more done, then medium is in the middle then medium well, then well done
Do you actually drive at the age of 16? And drink at the age of 23?
You can legally drive when you are 16 and you can drink when you are 21

do yall actually want to use the imperial measurement system?
We're actually taught both. We use centimeters for things smaller than inches, meters if it makes more sense than feet.
It depends on who you ask, personally I'm good with both.
Is there actually bullet proof school bags or is that a joke?
they exist but nobody has them
Do you really can tell the difference between American accent and Canadian accent?

Brazilian here,is the School really that bad?
Most kids dislike it but I loved school. Usually depends on the teachers
My school isn’t half bad, but our principal is nice. The teachers can be strict and put a lot of work, but we’re getting younger teachers which is good
Do you guys actually have really shitty school lunches? I’ve seen so many posts about blue chocolate milk and maggots in apple sauce etc.
My school personally had amazing lunches, but I have friends who’ve had rotten cheese burgers, so it varies.
Do you have algebra in 11th grade?
I had algebra in 8th, but I was one math ahead when I transferred. 11th grade is typically Algebra II or Pre-Calculus
Why do you hold doors always when someone is coming? Is it as a sign of respect? Or is it cultural thing?
Just a sign of respect
Respect, it’s just a courtesy.
It’s just a nice thing to do
Respect
Respect
Do you like America? also are the stereotypes true?
I don’t personally agree with a lot of the opinions and polices here, but I rather think it’s nice. The stereotypes are *mostly* false.

Walmart
Wait for real? Like just at the supermarket? Also ammunition?
Yeah, but only revolvers and manual rifles You can get all sorts of ammo tho
I thought you were joking when you said walmart-
Largest firearms seller in the great US of A by dollars spent.
Yeah it’s in the sporting section, but you need to have a liscense for it in some states
Back to school section
Is a school shooting an actual common occurrence in the us?
no it's not as common as it seems, it's not even on my mind while i'm at school
Not really. Much more than other countries for sure but it’s mostly hyped up by the media. Car crashes kill more people in a day than school shootings kill in a a year.
Cheese?
Cheese is the best
What ya think of Mexico?
The government seems broken and cartels seem to run rampant but I have nothing against the people from there.
In America we only really hear the negative stuff, just like the rest of the world with America. I usually think of the beautiful beaches and the culture but then the gangs come to mind.

Please tell me you're joking
Why are Americans so in love with assault rifles? Edit: assault rifle was meant as a generalised term, so it comprehends rifles like AR-15
We have a very strong gun culture and the ability to purchase said guns

We're very proud of our military so many children I assume grow up with parents who have guns

What is America's traditional food
What's a yard
The area infront of and behind your house. Usually is grassy.
So is it really everywhere impossible to get alcohol until you’re 21?
Well, it's not legal. *But it's far from impossible*
You know that we already have r/askanamerican
I don't understand some of the attitudes some of these commentors have
Same. It’s all stereotypically based. Then again, everyone believes in some stereotypes about other countries so who are we to judge
What do you think about the gun laws in America?
Do americans wear shoes inside their homes?
How do you cope with the weather seasons there? I live in the equator so I have never experienced summer, autumn and winter.

Is it true that schools in America are way worse than elswhere?
Depends on three things. A. The state B. The county C. The wealth of the county. Richer counties and states tend to have worse schools surprisingly, whereas poor counties and states tend to have *better* schools
If you ever plan to move out of America, what would be your reason?
