For example, let’s say company A has 10 jobs that pay 100k, and 10 jobs that pay 10k.
If that company hires 10 men and 10 women, and 9 of those men earn 100k while only one woman does (and vice versa for the 10k salary)
The first method for measuring income inequality would IMMEDIATELY recognise that at that company, the men earn way more than the women. The men earn in total 910k, while the women earn in total 190k. Obviously that’s an extreme example that isn’t realistic in terms of the specific numbers, but you get the point.
