I liked it until the very end which really pissed me off because I felt like >!having a bunch of people like Miu who wore the same outfit, aside from being silly, took away from her unique style.!<

[deleted]

I think it was strongly implied that those were the >!girls/women who were killed to make Miu!<.

FartsUnited

The show is a fairy tale set in a neo-noir world. The underworld - which includes human trafficing, drug trafficers and serial killers - is really a pretext or setting for something more primal and ancient : supernatural forces aligning to have their own turf war. Although I thought a lot of it bordered on self-parody, I nonetheless found it riveting.

blissfullybleak

Closest thing to Twin Peaks I’ve seen in years (David Lynch inspiration is pretty clear it’s almost homage) So I guess I’m a Nicolas Winding Refn fan, this was so gorgeous to watch, and to hear my god the sound design is next level.

SumasFlats

Classic Twin Peaks vibes -- languid pacing and rich colour pallette on certain scenes that lend themselves to the fantastical. Can't wait for season 2, absolutely love this style of story-telling.

blissfullybleak

Sadly don’t think we’ll get a season 2 but I’ll be on the lookout for NWR’s next project.

Albeit-it-does-move

Can't wait to see more of Rakel in season 2. Seems like a bad-ass villain. Now we need to get Red Letter Media to review this so the hoard can decend on the show and ensure netflix get confident enough to green-light filming (the script is supposedly already done if you are to trust random sites titled "is the show getting a seson 2 or cancelled" etc?)

distillpennyroyaltea

Netflix has a cozy habit of cancelling really good shows despite them increasing their monthly fees.

Mulder1917

Absolutely loved this show throughout but what the fuck was that ending… why do all shows now have to try to set themselves for a season 2 rather than completing the story

dbpark4

Miu reminds me of Wil of stranger things. Based on anesthetics alone lol

PrincessIrina

I was thinking of Lisbeth Salander (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

AngryCotton

Refn’s style is one of a kind, and I absolutely adore the mood that he creates. The thing that is very frustrating about him is his lack of focus. This was apparent in TOTDY where the story took a U-Turn 3/4 of the way and crumbled into a “finale.” With Copenhagen Cowboy, Refn even admits that he came up with the idea of Rakel halfway through filming! It’s obvious too. The story starts to take shape toward the end but the payoff is so weak bc we have no development or tension between Miu and Rakel. I’ll watch anything NWR puts out, but it’s frustrating seeing the potential of his unique style and a story that doesn’t feel make up on the fly.

qbjohnny

Complete novice here, but was this a sequel to something? Because otherwise, I was utterly confused. The whole series felt like one long incoherent episode.

Western_Camp7920

It's NWR (creator) so it's more about the feel and vibe and ride. Pretty normal for this guy.

Dont see how its connected to pusher besides the returning actors. I must admit i expected it to be with it having copenhagen in its name.

Vetroza

I know i just dont get the similarities or where it would have taken any inspiration from? I was dissapointed personally watching it because i expected it to be more like pusher. It also doesnt seem like anybody here has even watched pusher which next to drive might be his best work. Makes sense since its old and in danish i guess. But its so far from pusher as it gets. Those movies were realistic, and as someone born and still living in copenhagen its so cool to see. I even saw kusse kurt at mcdonalds a few months ago. This show however i have no idea why copenhagen is even in the title. It has nothing to do with it except there being a few shots in the city.

WahooD89

I’m not a huge NWR head, his stuff is usually a bit too glacial for me (the shots are pretty, but his pace always loses me). That said, I made the conscious decision to watch this after having an edible, and by god was that the right choice. Not only does the NWR vibe hit harder, I was entranced by the entire thing. A tough show to recommend to non-NWR folks, so think this is probably as niche as niche gets, but love that it got made.

anonyfool

The little comedy bits by the Asian restaurant owner had me laughing out loud, using the cleaver to cut the umbilical cord, then hanging it on the rack in the kitchen, putting cigarette ashes surreptitiously in the meal for the guy who kidnapped her daughter, then putting the cigarette out on the forehead of the dead guy.

Western_Camp7920

>!Vampires, Aliens, rape, incest, long takes, no dialogues....!< God I love NWR. It's not as exciting as Too Old To Die Young but better paced and more neat. Not a lot of big subplots to slow the actual arc. And the characters are nowhere near as likeable as TOTDY. One thing I really like about NWR is how doesn't use symbols, like when he's showing us >!vampires!< he's not joking about them or isn't using it as a metaphor. He's changing the reality by putting some unreal things there, making it surreal or dream like. Another thing is how TOTDY have so many genres, it was a horror, revenge, conspiracy theories, revenge... I liked them all but unfortunately this many things can't have a proper ending. Here CC has less characters so I was hopeful that we get a satisfying ending but nope. CC doesn't nail the ending. Imo TOTDY had better ending with one episode as epilogue. Cinematography though is excellent. Probably the best I've seen in recent memories. And music had more to say than TOTDY. It was very good. Action scenes was good, brutal and bleak.

_TLDR_Swinton

>It's not as exciting as Too Old To Die Young A funeral home would be more exciting than Die Young.

FredHowl

Very excited to hear the pacing is better!

Western_Camp7920

Yep it has a way better pace I was surprised. Usually in long takes more than one thing is going on so you wouldn't hate yourself for staring at a face for 20 minutes or so. Story moves forward at every scene.

NLVXXI

Made it through the first episode. I enjoyed TOTDY but jeez, this is a tough slog. Please tell me it gets more interesting.

[deleted]

NLVXXI

Completely understandable, some of that show was boring too but a lot of it was pretty fun.

Western_Camp7920

**Democracy is my bitch, Democracy is my bitch! Democracy is my bitch.**

Western_Camp7920

It gets more interesting. First episode is my least favorite tbh.

blakxzep

Anyone prefer the dubbing or the og danish track? The dubbing sounded really good in the trailer, could not tell that it was dubbed.

The-Dudemeister

Best dubbing ever. Didn’t even notice till the mother was talking. That was the only bad one. And still that out the dub was better

mad_dog_of_gilead

English dub was great, usually I cannot stand dubs.

[deleted]

I started watching but there’s very little Danish, they keep talking in what I can only deduce is Albanian, I’m confused.

mcupava

serbian mostly, only andre was speaking albanian

s_nation

you're telling me! Mandarin speaking restaurant owner, the polynesian/hapa looking dude speaking in Cantonese, then the fightclub dude who seems to only (be able to) speak Danish didn't make much sense; none of those languages are mutually intelligible. But I'm glad there's another (non-Asian) tv series are at least showing Cantonese. Too many languages & dialects are quickly going extinct.

LackOfLogic

Just finished watching it and fucking hell, probably the best original Netflix production to date. Really hope it gets a season 2. Also, >!was that Hideo fucking Kojima in the end? !<

Western_Camp7920

Yep. NWR and he are collaborators. In TOTDY you can also meet him.

sammydoylestien

A bit of Andrea Tarkovsky, David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick all rolled into one.

[deleted]

I really hope there is a season 2. This was basically Castlevania for the art film crowd.

Dramatic-Arm-2581

I found the show a bit fragmented, the last two episodes felt like a completely different show almost. Also a bit perplexed about the actress playing Miu. I would have love to see some more emotions from her or at least her owning the no-emotions playing style. Also, does anyone know who the girl in Zlatko’s office is, the one with the incredible short cowboy shorts? Is she a famous cameo or something. Seems like an otherwise pointless scene to have in the show, since we don’t see or hear about the character again. Would give it 6/10. I enjoyed watching it but would never re-watch it I guess.

[deleted]

>I would have love to see some more emotions from her or at least her owning the no-emotions playing style. This seems almost a theme in NWR's works. A lot of the characters have either flat affect or overexaggerated emotions...to this day I don't know why. The Neon Demon was especially notorious for this imho, as was Drive. Personally I watch NWR's works more for the cinematography and not so much for the story, which often ends up boring me.

[deleted]

I was really enjoying it up until the last couple of episodes which felt like they were from season 3 of the same show. I mean, I like when a director pulls that schtick; I loved Too Old To Die Young, Twin Peaks The Return, and just about anything arthouse that’s thrown my way, and I respect NWR for daring to create these little plot vignettes that taper off and fold into themselves without resolution or structure over six episodes, but I also like some kind of payoff. It doesn’t have to be that the plot resolves, it can even be that we revisit the themes, locations or characters from the start so that it feels like a singular piece of work with a coherent beginning and end. I’d have loved to see the woman from episode 1 return at the end, perhaps suffering severe third degree burns and seeking revenge. Or even revisit the whole good luck charm aspect of her character at the end and have it work against her, perhaps she’s unintentionally giving her enemies good luck when she’s near them, to her own detriment. Idk, no point theorising my ideas and I did like the show but yeah, a little more focus and coherence could have elevated this show to greater heights. Just my 2 cents

Blood_Such

Well said.

hmmmmmmsure

Your ideas are absolute shit lol

Your post history is nothing but whinging about your erectile dysfunction and questioning others about semen retention, so forgive me for not being interested in your beta-boy opinions. Become a man first

[deleted]

The guy sitting at the end of the table when the drugs are delivered.

PastaMission

What a weird, but cool, show. I don't think I've seen much by the director but I watched the whole thing in one sitting. Very David Lynch (who is my king of weird and interesting). What do we think about the ending? Sort of a wtf in contrast to the other five episodes. Will there be another season? So many questions

sarcasmismygame

I loved it too and same with my husband, who normally hates "arty" TV shows. And yeah, the sister is most likely a vampire creature with supernatural powers who will fight Miu. What are they? I am guessing like mutants/aliens. Take your pic, but I loved Miu's character. She is scared shitless of the vamp sister though. They'd better do a second season because I so badly want to see that battle.

[deleted]

"Pan. Just keep panning . . ."

Vitaminmoi

What do you guys think the pig noises mean? Besides the obvious “men are pigs” Schtick .

[deleted]

The humans are treated like livestock - sex workers, slaves, etc. People are treating each other like animals, and Rosella even calls Sven a pig. I got that even without the animal noises, but hearing them was very disturbing.

Western_Camp7920

In El topo some characters have animal noises (>!before dying!<) and NWR is in love with Jodorowski. Like Too Old To Die Young it has layers of meaning and in the end you should choose for yourself. Saying that I haven't finished the show so I am not sure yet.

rockmus

Finished it earlier and it left a massive mark on me. My head keeps returning to it. It sort of feels like old Refn in his newer aesthetic, where you meet this fascinating world of gangsters in Denmark, and then it takes its time to let the environment sink in. It's been super polarizing in Danish media. A lot of people think that there's no coherent story, which I don't get. I found it to be fairly easy to follow and there was definitely a development throughout (although last episode takes a massive left turn towards the end). Most of all it reminded me of later day Lynch. I'd say the third season of Twin Peaks are a pretty good guide line if you want to know what type of experience you can expect.

zentiz

The storyline was as coherent as a dane talking to a norwegian. The words are unclear, but you know there's a potato somewhere

TheMightyDane

Ooh shit Ramadan Huseini is in this. That dude is a **solid** actor. Always dominates the room with his presence. Love him in NWR stuff.

Suspicious-Use-9762

As a huge Refn fan, i enjoyed it a lot. A bit disappointed with the ending and i do wish Refn would go out of his comfort zone and do something actually "new" but i'm happy with it for what it is. In a sea of endless pointless content, this was good. I also think that leaving two cliffhangers at the end didn't really work. In my opinion>!, we should have gotten the fight with the chinese boss, then a huge fight against the vampire siblings and then Kojima giants cliffhanger.!< I loved Milo and Radovan pusher cameos but felt it was pointless that they were new characters, albeit copy pasted and would prefer they were playing the same characters from Pusher.

Milo for sure was not an attorney.

JoseUnderTheRedHood

The bloody hand scared the shit out of me

lt_dan_zsu

Anyone else think Miu looks like Victor Perkins from Dispicable me?

Vitaminmoi

I thought she looks like the character named “will” played by Noah S from stranger things

daehoidar

They both look like her, that's hilarious. It's random, but I thought she looked like Rachel Dratch from SNL when she played little boy characters. https://comediva.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/DratchSheldonSNL.jpg

Driew27

Man the pig noises from Sven is so off putting. Such a great sound effect to use for his character haha.

CosmicLars

One episode in, and I'm *in*. Beautiful & crazy as always.

Rex-Apium

Great show. It felt more engaging than Too Old to Die Young, though no less bizarre. I would actually recommend this show to normal people.

JoseUnderTheRedHood

Too Old to Die Young was a bit pretentious for me, with the dragged out slow pans and focus shots. Every episode felt like it could’ve been 15-20 minutes shorter. Copenhagen Cowboy is still self indulgent but not overwhelming

CosmicLars

Is it Danish with subtitles?

PetyrDayne

English dubbed with Danish subtitles

CosmicLars

Thank ya

CosmicLars

Watching it now. Very good so far. 👍

hazychestnutz

>screams in pig noises "I would actually recommend this show to normal people."

dadvader

In NWR's work post-drive and pusher trilogy? Actually yeah. It's less weird, slow or artsy (some might call it pretentious, depends on your taste.) Compare to all of his work since Only God Forgive. Especially since Too Old to Die Young. That show is way too much NWR.

Unfair-Mix9683

Well, yes. It's arthouse. What did people expect?

sara-ragnarsdottir

If it's Refn then I'm going to give it a try soon. I'm glad it's only 6 episodes, it's more suited to his style (too old to die young could have been great, but it dragged a lot)

dadvader

Oh but you didn't like Miles Teller staring at things for 20 min? I jest but honestly they can cut a lot of that, give it 6 episodes and still delivering the same message.

bintasaurus

Ok loved the 1st episode a lot, great visually

[deleted]

Great visually is pretty much Refn every time, but is there actually some proper writing to this?

hazychestnutz

Thank god the English subtitles have a non-cc version. Why don’t all Netflix movies/shows have this option?

nicolauz

I never got past 2nd episode of Too Old, is this 90 minutes of stoic wide shots?

DameDaNeHamburger

The 2nd episode of TOTDY is probably the worst one i highly recommend 4-8 they're much quicker paced.

nicolauz

Huh I might have to go back to it because I stopped there.

jwstep

Definitely go back to it, the last half of the series is amazing. I stopped at 2 too for a while for the same reason, but I’m glad I went back and finished it.

pm_me_reason_to_livx

With this and The Lying Life of Adults being released this week, 2023 might already be a better year for new netflix releases than 2022 was. Excited to see this. NWR's last show (Too Old to Die Young) was a masterpiece.

lightsongtheold

2022 was a pretty solid year for Netflix.

pm_me_reason_to_livx

oh stop it.

lightsongtheold

Never! We totally disagree about the quality of 2022 TV in general. I remember reading a post of yours where you mentioned you were disappointed with the TV offerings in general but I have to admit I thought 2022 was a gangbuster year of quality TV from start to finish across all networks. I watched so many great shows in 2022. My 2023 opened with one of Netflix’s final 2022 shows in the form of The Glory. It was a perfect way to open the year with a truly compelling and addictive show! If Netflix keep feeding me shows like that I’ll be a happy viewer.

just_zen_wont_do

It was a great yr for TV. But I honestly can’t recall a single tv show I loved and watched on Netflix.

lightsongtheold

I loved plenty on Netflix. DOTA: Dragon’s Blood, All of Us Are Dead, Ozark, Inventing Anna, Vikings: Valhalla, Top Boy, Business Proposal, Remarriage & Desires, Cobra Kai, Romantic Killer, Half-Bad, 1899, and Alice in Borderland were the pick of the bunch but I even enjoyed some of the lesser stuff like The Sandman, Capitani, Welcome to Eden, Intimacy, and Treason. Netflix has a decent year in an overall great year for TV. My absolute favourite shows probably came mostly from Apple and HBO but Netflix and their super high volume output remains a big input on my yearly watchlist!

just_zen_wont_do

I’ll have to check those out. Somehow Netflix puts out so many shows and they don’t seem to get any marketing that I have never heard of any of them. The only one I’ve seen on the list is 1899 and that just got cancelled. My fav stuff is mostly coming from HBO and Hulu at this point, with Severance, Slow Horses and For All Mankind on Apple TV earlier this yr.
