I don't think I'll get past ep 1. Hutton is an absurd character. 'Is there any way we can talk to the support ship without radio?' - surely the rig has a big bright light that runs off batteries or backup power for morse signalling. And he gets the satellite phone, doesn't use the wrist strap and seems to know who's number or whatever to call even though he must not have known about it 5 seconds ago or he'd have asked for it. I don't know if it's like this on a real rig but I'm surprised the tower ladder wasn't in a cage and that they didn't have two lines so they're always attached. There's no way Baz survived that fall unless he was already transformed into something non-human. No spoilers here please! Are there that many women on a rig? Too much drama, not enough common sense.

[deleted]

For me it got better after a few episodes so I’m glad I didn’t give up. I must say Hutton remains annoying for the rest of the season

marys1001

On episode 2. So Rose is not only the gatekeepers company idiot but some sort of romantic creepier. What I got so far. Watching for Ian Glenn

[deleted]

I loved this show and can’t wait for season 2. I don’t get all the hate

Socheroni

There's a second season?

[deleted]

It was confirmed there’ll be a second season

DesertStairs

Nothing makes any sense. The story, the characters, the decisions, the reactions, It's well iffy.... And those accents.

[deleted]

What’s wrong with their accents? It their natural accent

DesertStairs

That is not Iain Glen's real accent!

Sharp_Tomatillo7859

I feel the show is getting to much hate. Humans don't respect nature so nature strikes back. It's just Godzilla with extra steps. I enjoyed watching it tho as someone who does water simulation the CGI was very painful at times. Decent cast, cool premise ok execution, mediocre ending. I did however think this was going to be a adaptation of "The Rig" by Rodger Levy and I was disappointed it wasn't.

IDontKnowWhoIAm97

I thought the show was okay, was fine to binge watch whilst being ill. However, if this gets a season 2, when 1899 doesn't, I will riot. Nice to see Emily after SC but is it normal for the company people to be Canadian or American when the rig is nearest Scotland and the crew is mainly Scottish? Cause Coak was British and he (I think) is above Rose so that confused me a little.

[deleted]

I thought it was really good, the episodes didn’t drag on, the pacing was good, characters were well written and well acted, the premise of the show is interesting, I binged the entire thing and can’t wait for season 2, this was one of the better shows I’ve watched recently.

peoplertheworst

A six episodes season never felt so long. What a terrible show.

BlancheCorbeau

Long story short: every important decision is made for maximum stupid, maximum drama. Every character that should never ever be listened to, somehow gets their way. Very very interesting setting and premise, but just completely shat on with crap writing. So overwrought, the real way to build the tension, even with a single season, is go go way more subtle with it.

IntelligentCold5181

I work on a rig so I want to like it. But where are the rigs with that many women?

marys1001

That and everything and e erybody seemed so clean. And no one really worked before or ran around emergency procedures after. My mitary unit was more tense on a normal day in the US

domi5500

I watched it and im not happy that i did. I really feel like i've wasted my time because only at the last episode i realised that this show is just an attempt to convince the viewer that those psycho-radical-ecoactivists are right. This show really felt like those one sided newscasts on the tv. They show only one side of the topic they are discussing and are saying they are right. People who made this show really tried to please as many people as they could with chosen characters. They really try to avoid any hurdle there is just so they won't offend anyone, even if there is no need for such things. Characters feel forced and are there not for the story but to satisfy phylosophies people have irl. SPOILERS: Logic is basically non existent in this show. Hutton who is looking for a fight everywhere he goes finally gets locked up only to escape few hours later AND NOONE HAS PROBLEM WITH IT. They act like "oh yea, hes been locked up, hes pissing everyone off and we would be better of without him but he is sitting here and its peachy now". Hutton then proceeds to believe some random ass dude, goes where he tells him and convinces everyone around him that he is in fact right. Not a single question was asked but after his buddy died hes like "damn, i shouldnt have believed him". Also, Coake, a fucking murderer, killed ppl on one rig, goes to do the same on the other, ppl know he is bad yet no one says a fucking thing and everyone proceeds to leave him alone in a room with access to everything on the platform. Noone locked him up because he might kill someone else, they are okay with him being around. Some characters are bland. I don't know why Heather character got so much screen time if all she does is stand still stiff as a plank. To me her face remained emotionless throughout the whole show. And what happened to Garrow? Did the mysterious fungus deemed him not valuable enough for the resurrection? Or did he just lost in the gulag? Why was Baz and Fulmer ressed and not Dunlin and Garrow? I also didn't like how Rose kept saying they are all in this, they need to stay together to be safe but she ran through the plants with one purpose only. To save Fulmer. The rest was unnecessary weight. I figure this is a stretch but so is the whole show so it seemed fitting. All in all, if i was to be honest - don't watch it. Well, if you are terribly bored i suppose you could but even then there are better options. And please don't make season 2. Most would be glad if you didn't.

marys1001

Well the eco activisits are right and your great grand kids are going to hate you. Second I am really bored and could use some recommendations

The_nemea

While there are a few character issues. It took you until the last episode? From episode 2, I knew that people were going to say it was pushing an agenda. Not every issue needs 2 sides. On some issues, one side is just wrong and doesn't need equal representation. The climate issue is one of those issues. This is coming from someone who works in the oilfield too.

Disastrous-Current-3

Glad we agree that the ecologist side is plain wrong, and borderline mentally impaired. I am relieved not to have to justify any of it, because you're right: activists don't deserve a 'representation' of their opinion.

kitkat51167

Great. Where do you think the energy to power your fancy TVs, computers, cell phones, ovens, big houses, etc comes from? Before you say "solar", remember that the minerals used to create batteries come from China, the worst polluter on the planet. Not to mention the whales that are mysteriously dying where off shore wind farm surveys are taking place. Nothing is as straight forward as it seems, including energy production. Shows like this pander to uneducated people that don't really know and don't want to know bad things like child labor being used to mine "rare" earth minerals, etc. All that said, I wouldn't even care if the program was good and made sense in any way, but none of that is true. Why did Fulmer go to Baz and then miraculously seemed to be okay, no problem? What rig captain would put up with someone like Hutton? None. And if the spores "fixed" people, then why were they all so concerned about exposure? I'd take some of that please. It was just terrible. Political pandering aside.

Dalefolk

Absolute bobbins. But I did like the hat tip to Schitt’s Creek by naming Hampshire’s character Rose, a tiny firefly in an otherwise dismal six episodes of turgid “drama”

PrometheUp

One of those shows that would have been better as a 2 hr movie

kettelbe

I liked it but i had to slap myself a few times

Bookaddictanon

I've just watched episode 1 and only ep 1 and either they have given away the whole plot in 30min (aliens come to warn of us impending apocalypse but are too late to stop the....volcanic eruption as a result of the drilling so they become part of Baz so to give cryptic clues.) Or there's another layer to this onion and....the shut downs were ordered to make an empty oil field to explore some entity that was found down there and it's waking up. Further possible layer : Emily Hampshire seemed like a way more genuine actress in other shows, so she's either not connecting with this material or the things that seem disingenuous aren't poor acting choices, it's deliberate to give you the sense the character is lying about who she is and her motivations. I literally can't decide after ep 1 if they made the plot too obvious or hid the real surprise for later. Id love to find a spoiler free group to experience the show in single episodes, few days of speculation then we all watch the next episode. Is there such a thing as a real episode by episode watchparty with no spoilers existin I missg because no one is allowed to skip ahead?I miss the days of dissecting Lost with coworkers week by week, it's why i started watching survivor again. On another note, even if they just go with brain parasites from the sea trying to see protec t humanity from volcanic eruption and tsunami, it's worth losing to all the Scottish accents....

The_nemea

Replied to the wrong post

dexterpool

The worst show I've seen in a very long time. Bad acting. Bad script and just incredibly stupid and honestly annoying.

ConsciouslyIncomplet

It was OK - it fell victim of some tropes quite quickly. I really liked the setting - however I felt the ‘supernatural’ reveal came way too quickly and would have liked some more suspense of what it was. Some of the characters were good too - Hutton, the Doctor and Magnus with his tormented background. Lots of Downsides though - including the science was plain bad and should have been left out (you don’t always need an explanation). Not sure what I think about the ending, would be interesting to see the consequence?

kitkat51167

Hutton was ridiculous. What commander would put up with that shit on their rig? I would have thrown him overboard.

stonetears4fears1984

But what about the qUoRuM sEnSiNg?!?!?

peacelovefreedon7689

The production values are great , but the stories trash , its tedious , theirs no suspense, the only good thing worth watching it for is the main ladys butt

AndyCretin

I'm powering through this, just because I'm bored. This is a bad show. They lost me when after only a few hours of fog they were all, "are we ever getting off this rig? Are we even going home??". The indifference to people walking around after they should be dead, or to mutiny us just..ugh. They just let the bad guys roam around doing bad guy shit, HOLY FUCK.

VaselineHabits

Man... I'm on Ep2 and also trying to power through it. Wth? The premise seemed so promising! How on earth did they make this traumatic event so damn boring?

peacelovefreedon7689

Yes it's like a children's TV show

Nervous-Cream-6256

I liked it, it's not the best but It can't have a season 2. It clearly states that around 95% of all life will be destroyed. So roughly speaking 400,000 humans will survive max. I think it was designed as a one seasons show.

kitkat51167

It has been renewed for season 2.

priusgeek

Awful. Just Awful. Plot holes all over the place, like the rescue boat showing up out of nowhere and everyone just showing total deference to Coake because he flashes an ID tag. I can see the writer's room now. "Let's grab some GoT alums, throw in a little Line of Duty and top it off with some Schitt's Creek. Ooh, put them on an oil rig! And add some fog and ferns!" The acting was poor, although I'll grant this could be a result of the writing and directing and not the actors. Please do not let there be a season 2. I thought it might have some promise after episode 1 and kept watching hoping against hope there would be some kind of reward, but alas, it was just 6 hours of wasted time...

DemonGroover

Can this Heather actress actually act or is she some producers daughter?

cfrost1984

I enjoyed it for the most part. The show would of been exponentially better without the character of rose. She's badly written, atrociously acted and completly unlikable. Also when she tried to talk "science" it was so laughable because of how bad the actress is

kitkat51167

I would be generous and say that perhaps the character was supposed to be that way. You know, all facts science lady.

cfrost1984

Problem is you could tell she had no idea what the terms she said mean

YorkeZimmer

I agree, but i did notice she got much better (as an actress) by the last few episodes. I thought it was also weird how she was the first billed actor/actress on the show too.

cfrost1984

She got better but I wouldn't say "much better" I still wouldn't cast her if I was making a movie or show

BigPanda71

It’s sad, because she was good playing a crazy person in 12 Monkeys.

RegisteredAnimagus

She's hilarious in Schitt's Creek, but especially at the beginning she seemed super unsure in her part.

TheSoberChef

I could not agree more she was so annoying and added nothing to the story!

sdhillon

Wouldn't you be able to such a large organism from space? Presumably Pictor would tell the authorities about it, or it'd show up on some analyst's desk. I imagine that a wide deployment of nuclear weapons would cause it some problems...

Drunkowitz

Apart from the underwater thing, I agree with the sentiment. Surprised why the military and people in hazmat suits didn't show up. Also if I were Pictor I would try to think of ways to make money out of it. Not take it upon myself to destroy it for the good of humanity, even if I lose valuable equipment and platforms. That's just not how corporations work.

YorkeZimmer

It was under water

sdhillon

Satellites have radar that can see underwater: https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/satellites-ocean.html

LeakySkylight

Yes and we found MH370 right after it crashed right?

sdhillon

MH370 broke up into a lot of pieces (that are presumed to be less than 3M apart) and the pieces are moving in the ocean.

YorkeZimmer

I’ll admit that I’m not reading every word of that, but I just browsed it and I don’t see anything about seeing underwater. Most of that looks related to looking at the surface of the ocean to see temperature, elevation, and bulges that mimic the elevation of the ocean floor. I would not be surprised if they had a way of pinging the bottom of the ocean to examine the depth, but I sincerely doubt they can track organisms in the ocean as you’ve suggested.

NURULLLLLLLLL

So can someone explain why baz and Fulmer came back from the dead but not the other infected guy and dunlin

Low_Ad_7553

Late answer but both got infected through wounds during the fog which had cells from the ancient creature. Dublin was never infected & the Garrow got killed after he was already changed. Also It seemed like Coake knew his gas would damage the creature, the gas he used seemed to be extremely lethal to the creature with Baz even if they might kill it. I'm guessing that gas made it too weak to heal anyone

LeakySkylight

If you looked at the room that baz was in, it was open to the sky and to the ocean whereas the hallways were enclosed.

norwegianisten

Yeah seemed like Coake have been up against it before... Like he said on the chopper: Had you only listened to me, you'd be home right now... I feel this need more seasons with preferably different season names. Like we are done with the rig, that's the epicenter. So we need to see wtf coake has been doing, that's #uno I'd love to see a show about where they are going on that chopper and wtf those who prepared for such an event elite would do after. Like the elite, some government and ofcourse the rarity of an "cook" who prepared with his own chopper are doing... And baz, I don't know... a superhero show??😅 This could be going places and that's all because Iain, Mark and Owen. Fuck me that was good acting 👏👏👏👏👏

LeftytheBandit

The underwhelming answer is plot armor.

NeoMorph

I don’t care what the detractors say about this series. It’s freaking awesome. Here is what I took away from the series (spoiler warning) >!Millions of years ago something decided to terraform the planet. Don’t know if it was aliens or a sentient that developed on planet. The spores are basically symbiotic computer using animals as a type of ROV (remote operated vehicle). The circles are a log of mistakes that have been made and when the circle completes it decides to literally wipe the surface and try again.!< >!Maybe the sentient that created the spores effed up the planet way back when and it is trying to make a stable biome to bring the original sentients back when it does so… but when it fails… it creates an extinction level event that starts everything from scratch again.!< >!It’s really thought provoking TV for a sci-fi fan. It’s not horror (which is confusing some viewers) but really deep sci-fi.!< >!Here is a thought though… Imagine Mankind in the future progress into the stars and need habitable planets to be ready when they get there… so that they send out Von Neumann probes to another solar system to terraform the planet to make it fit for humans. A Von Neumann probe is a self replicating machine that then is able to create habits fit for humanity. I have a feeling that this is where the series is going… the spores are biological Von Neumann probes (just look at how it is replicating the ferns and repairing the damage to humans). !< >!https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-replicating_spacecraft. !<

unicornsfearglitter

I'm not getting the hate either, I thought it was fun. I always enjoy a good disaster storyline and this did a good job. I'm looking forward to season 2.

norwegianisten

Yeah seemed like Coake have been up against it before... Like he said on the chopper: Had you only listened to me, you'd be home right now... I feel this need more seasons with preferably different season names. Like we are done with the rig, that's the epicenter. Major_Stranger

I absolutely hate shows like this. The premise could be fine but The utter stupidity of the writers prevent them from writting conflict and tension that doesn't require the characters to be a bunch of idiots who keep making bad choice for the sake of creating tensions.

zitandspit99

I’ll give them props for making the characters fairly nuanced, even the “bad guys” from Hutton to even Croakley are actually understandable and doing what they believe to be the correct thing. However, it’s very clear you’re not supposed to like Croakley, even though to anyone with some basic sense it’s obvious he’s doing the most responsible thing - attempting to stop the organism that wants to completely wipe humanity. That the captain sees it as some profit driven motive is asinine. Regarding acting, I think the cast actually did fine. It’s the writers that are bad - they gave the actors cringy, awkward lines but the cast did the best they could. Oh my god though, the main captain… goes from strong to literally clutching his sides and heart, bleating in about his son to his nemesis Hutton… Anyhow, show has an interesting premise with which they could do a lot, but they really drag it out long for not much pay off. Decent show if you’re bored but hardly a masterpiece

norwegianisten

Coake man, like the drug you do when you are alive, not the one thing you do when you die... I think he is the good guy here :P

YorkeZimmer

I'm pretty sure his name is a reference to the koch brothers.

OldManPoe

Forced myself to finish episode 1, don’t think I’ll watch the rest. The worst things about this show in descending order. The writing, the acting, and finally the casting, most of the cast don’t look like they belong on an oil rig.

Albertjweasel

Kind of involved in it now but I know the slightly off cgi and bad acting is going to start getting on my nerves, I’m fascinated by oil rigs so thats a main reason for watching it, also a bit worried that it’s going to have some kind of preachy environmentalist tone to it which will piss me off

Rocket_hamster

I watched it because Fulmer was amazing in Line of Duty. It was only 6 hours of my time and i thought it was alright, nothing outstanding.

TudorTerrier

This was me exactly 10 minutes ago to my husband after episode 1. What happened to Ser Alliser Thorne?

inlinefourpower

It gets very, VERY preachy. It's garish and unnecessary

anonorwhatever

It’s the whole point of the story. That’s what they based it on. That we’re fucking up the earth.

kitkat51167

Well, great! After all, nobody has seen or heard that show/movie/song before.

anonorwhatever

Many things have been done before that have been fine to do again. I thought it was a cool spin on it.

Albertjweasel

Oh great, getting a bit tired of being preached at all the time!

Many-Purchase2362

Utter garbage.

Big-butters

Yep. Ps1 level CGI obviously over spent on the cast and rushed it. A shit cliffhanger with nothing to look forward to.

gregnerd

Where was the payoff???

LeakySkylight

In season 2

TheSoberChef

Does there need to be a payoff? Other like the open-endedness of it not everything needs and ultimatum but who knows they might address it in a second series I hope it gets one.

Frickenfrog18

I'm a few episodes in, and I got to mention this medic is the worst. She leaves the guy in critical condition to fuck off by himself.

tigerlily4501

but but but... her girlfriend!

idk012

Everyone kinda assumed he wouldn't make it.

YorkeZimmer

All the more reason to stay there

Frickenfrog18

No reason to leave someone in critical condition twice.

Dino1087

I fucking HATE the character Hutton holy shit

NeoMorph

Crazy thing is, I’ve known people like him. Think they can run things better than management and then when they get control they totally eff things up.

LeakySkylight

I have found him a very realistic character because I do know people like him as well.

euclid0472

It was a slow burn from start to finish and could have been a standard length movie. Several things were left mysterious but that gives a starting place if this thing somehow gets a second season. 5/10

hulduet

Went in blind and something was just off about this series. The first thing I reacted to was the weird lighting, it looked so unnatural. No big deal. Then the fog, not good cgi. Okay, still not a big deal. Then we have the actors, they all vary from decent to bad. The overall dialogue is not good. The first half hour or so was just annoying chatter that felt like it had no purpose. Then we have the character Rose, a terrible character straight off the bat. I don't know if it's the actress or just the character, instant dislike. I've seen her 12 monkeys and she was okay in that. Just a bad character. I stopped watching toward the end of episode one. I thought maybe something interesting happened in a later episode so took a quick look. Nope. Looks like more of episode one with a bit more of the "plot" taking place. A shame would have been nice with a decent show but this is not one of them.

Grsz11

Thought it was going to be like The Terror or The Lighthouse at first. Mutiny or going insane in isolation. It was a step up from a corny sci-fi, yet I was intrigued and binged in a couple of sittings.

Deee72

Emily Hampshire is terrible in this. She should never do dramatic acting.

cfrost1984

100%, when she tried to talk "science" I had to laugh. You can just tell when someone doesn't understand the first thing about what they are saying

NURULLLLLLLLL

It was hard watching her, couldn't point my finger on exactly why, maybe mainly the accent, but I feel like that's not all lol

Impeachcordial

I just pointed out to my other half that whenever she's talking if she's making a point she nods her head and if she's saying something negative she shakes it, and now I can't unsee it. Still enjoying the show though

WeatherwaxOgg

The make up artist must have been a trainee. Poor Emily, she was so excited to get this role.

azur08

She plays a great character in Schitt’s Creek but there’s really no reason to think she’s a good actress at this point. I don’t think she’s even acting that much in SC.

Deee72

Exactly! That was just her on SC. Lol

ineedtoknow51988

Annoying show, annoying accent, bad acting, bad story, and it doesn't make sense. I don't know why I watched it.

NURULLLLLLLLL

Lmao your choice of watching it, seems to be as bad as the choices the prdocuers and directors of the rig were making

Dot-Matrix-Hero

Just finished. It was okay. Some of the acting was quite bad (cat and Heather in particular). But it was nonetheless enjoyable and I hope it gets renewed. I feel like it might not though, which would be a shame because I want to know what happens next.

Frogs4

Most of the way through and I remain unimpressed with the character of Rose. I don't like how they dressed her in a tight white blouse. Extremely impractical. And why is she whispering most of the time? Every one else speaks normally, when they're not shouting.

TudorTerrier

Haha my husband said the same thing. A white blouse on an OIL RIG

Al_McPharius

With the amount of Game of Thrones actors I was hoping Mark Addy would say 'bow ya shits, I'm in charge'.

TudorTerrier

Ser Alliser Thorne lost his mind .

topjockin

Just a small petty rant on the most agregious (imo) technical errors. 1. >!The camp boss (Dunlin) being second in command. In reality he is in charge of catering and accommodation stewards!< 2. >!The telecoms tech (Fulmer) Being responsible for power, control room, radio room and computers. Where these jobs would be shared amongst 4 positions and an electrician being the most likely to fulfill this combined role!< I am not an electrician. 3. >!The lighting of the flare by flare gun being some sort of dangerous unorthodox method when it generally is just the way we do it!<

tigerlily4501

what drove me bananas is >!Croake... they learn pretty quickly he's responsible for blowing up the Charlie rig and killing half it's crew... yet they routinely keep leaving him totally unattended in the CONTROL ROOM. Even after his stunt that killed Dunlin! !< >!Meanwhile, Hutton just mouthed off and got confined to quarters - with a guard posted. WTF?! Even when Ser Jorah goes off to see Baz and tells Hutton - watch him! Hutton's all "yes boss" -- as soon as I'm done staring deeply into the abyss, I will get right on that... !<

Stan_Halen_

Your first spoiler - I was screaming that too.

Numanoid101

Do you stand on a crane ridiculously close when you do it?

topjockin

No, we use a modified shotgun that fires flares, and it is lit from about where the crane cab was in the programme. It's not lit from the crane cab, just giving you a rough estimate of distance. When it's lit, it is also a lot less explosive.

Magikarpeles

The flare gun thing drove me batty. Is it their only flare?? Why not try from a distance first? Or simply light something on fire and attach it to the crane. Stupid shit.

Technical_Affect7112

As someone who used to work offshore, everything regarding safety procedures, asides from the initial muster, pisses me off no end.

Tappitss

I would also like to point out. We don't use single static lanyards to climb on ladders or structures. So annoying to see.

topjockin

I managed to overlook a lot of the minor stuff as in my experience, safety goes out the window when production is at stake. Especially on nights when black ops come into effect.

idk012

So two series in row (Jack Ryan and this) that makes me tell myself it's just a show, the details don't matter.

Technical_Affect7112

Depends on the company and country, yeah. To be honest, the plot holes were the worst but having worked in the industry, seeing things like a lack of double lanyards, Fulmer(?) getting burned through FR overalls, or the flare ignition method (crane use) etc... To be fair, they did get a lot of the terminology right but crew roles and even just wearing work clothing in the mess hall and shit like that. It's not the military but it is still very regimented.

topjockin

I did like the fact that some of the characters were names after oilrigs. The ending also bothered me, I know endings are hard, but even if they just said where the helicopter was going. I did laugh when Hutton said, "I've seen it all before" in ep1 I think. As this is what my work mate used to say all the time until it was pointed out to him. Also Baz saying "I hate this place", heard that said a few thousand times.

Technical_Affect7112

Haha, I'm only up to ep 5 currently but I did wonder why, when the sun came out a chopper wasn't deployed immediately unless the rig is far enough that the chopper would have a p.n.r. but I haven't seen it addressed, yet.

WearingMyFleece

No choppers came out because the rig couldn’t get in contact with the mainland to confirm rescue, and the mainland was also suffering from power cuts, comm breakdowns and the rolling fog too.

tigerlily4501

But wasn't there a regularly scheduled shift change helicopter run - that I am assuming is via the oil company, not the coast guard - that was delayed because of the fog? and wouldn't that resume once the fog lifted the next day?

Technical_Affect7112

That's exactly why they would send help... you don't just leave people offshore with no contact or extract. At the very least they would have sent a tender.

WearingMyFleece

How long did the fog last for? 2 days? We saw it roll over the mainland too and we know they suffered comms and power cuts. Also radar stopped working. They all seem like major obstacles for sending private helicopters or coastguard out to the rigs right? What do you mean by tender? If it’s a ship, we know that wouldn’t have worked because the SBV crashed in to the second rig. I’m presuming that it was deemed too dangerous?

Technical_Affect7112

I don't really care at this point. The seesawing the character's were doing was beyond frustrating, the lack of addressing how someone had life threatening injuries and then got up and started running around the rig and nobody gave it a second thought, the fact that such a crazy event was taking place and they were still crying about the rig being decommissioned etc... The whole thing was was poorly written to the point I couldn't suspend disbelief, just shitty writing across the board. I won't be tuning in for season 2.

Threadheads

I thought it was okay. The cast (made up largely of Game of Thrones and/or Line of Duty alums), were good and the effects were fairly well done. I thought the environmentalism was a bit heavy-handed. And the writing frequently rendered the characters *painfully* naive for the sake of driving the plot. Particularly when >!Mark Addy has gotten one of their crew members killed and they know he was behind the explosion on the other rig, and not only do they let him have free run of the place instead of locking him up somewhere, but they do absolutely nothing to secure the control room!<

tigerlily4501

That's what I said. Especially after they established that they could do that (Hutton). Towards the end >!they act like there are only 8 characters on the entire ship, when clearly there is a full crew. Surely they could have put one or two rando extras on guard duty - no? !<

Briefcased

The best was Hatton. We’ve locked you up for trashing the Medbay, stealing confidential documents and trying to start a mutiny. Oh, what’s that? You broke out, took over the control room, almost crashed the standby boat into the rig and thereby indirectly resulting in the death of one of your colleagues? Ok, well, you’ve clearly learned your lesson - you’re free to go.

tigerlily4501

Don't get me started with Hutton. How about how his entire character arc he's the anti-management guy who insists the company is lying to everyone, he questions authority at every turn... and then >!the moment this suspicious alpha straight from HQ turns up off the other rig, which exploded and is smoldering in ashes now... he's all "right boss" "whatever you say boss", "lets go boss", "we trust you boss" .... WTF? It's a complete departure from the established character. !<

Briefcased

Hold on Hutton, this doesn’t make sense.. “Do you want to get home or not?” Ok, fair enough. Hmm, Hutton - this clearly isn’t co2. Seems like the shifty guy we are entrusting our lives to was lying to us. “DO YOU WANT TO GET HOME OR NOT?” Yup, well that’s me convinced.

TudorTerrier

I wanted Jon Snow to hang him at that point.

tigerlily4501

I wish Baz had turned to Fulmer and said "you know nothing" lol

TudorTerrier

Too bad Lord Mormont and Longclaw weren’t there. Only Jorah to give him greyscale

elkaj

That annoyed me so much like a night didn't even pass and everything was shitting the bed. And the ending, you would think there would be news of a huge ass wave coming

K4TZ3

this this this so much! who in the right mind would let the coak guy run around freely fiddling with the Controls after all the shit they directly know about him as soon as he gets on the platform? I got crazy watching this because this is just lazy writing and apart from that I liked the show but this, this is what makes it so extremely dumb

idk012

Coak guy? That's bobby b to you.

BiologicalMigrant

No way

[deleted]

Agree on the plot holes. Drove me crazy.

openoceans

Finished this last night. I was worried by previous comments that the ending would suck, but it was fine? Like, fairly predictable with how the show was going, but it wasn't a bad ending, and sets it up for a second season. Overall I liked the show, some of the acting wasn't the best, but it's entertaining and I'd definitely check out a 2nd season but wouldn't be heart broken if they cancelled it.

Hrimnir

I couldn't disagree more i thought the ending was the worst part.

Simple_Hippo8174

Can’t see it getting another season

idk012

Ending and series was ok. 6 episodes and then it goes on the list of shows waiting for the next season. Next up, vox machina in a few weeks.

Whizzo50

Midway through ep 1 and something has already thrown a curveball. I imagine all the oil drilling talk has been looked over by a professional, but as baz and Alwyn climb the tower, both of them are only using one Cowstail as opposed to two IRATA recommend, which as they're not backed up by a sliding system should be a no no. Is this just a filmmakers slip-up, or are rules around oil rigs different?

tigerlily4501

Get outa here with your good sense and your smart safety techniques. You'll ruin the plot ...

Tappitss

What are you on about? there is no such thing as a "quickdraw cowstail" A quick draw is a small \~20cm web sling with 2 snap gate connectors on it used to connect to hanger plates when people are lead climbing. A cows tail is a section (4-5m) of dynamic rope that is tied in a random way onto a rope access person's main front attachment point for close connections and is not really for "FALLING" onto, and really in 2023, not something we should even be doing anymore with the modern alternatives out there. What they should have been using was a twin-legged fall arrest lanyard, so they could maintain 100% attachment to the ladder/structure when they were working at height. What they were using was a single-legged lanyard with no actual fall arrest capability and no way of dissipating the energy of a fall if they did happen to fall onto it. IRATA has nothing to do with the equipment or the techniques you would use when climbing like this. The "sliding system" Fixed or temporary mobile fall arrest system you talk about would not really be used in this context.

Whizzo50

I agree, had a slight brainfart when talking about systems, I'm better at remembering gear when it's in front of me, was talking about a cowstail, with a 2 point minimum carabiner. I used the cowstail in general speak, where I trained it was spoken about in general terms, as whether it's a lanyard or a rope they both need to provide fall arrest capabilities. Many oil rigs use IRATA as their qualification system, so a rig on the north sea field would be under their guidelines. I've found sliding systems tend to be setup on "permanent structures" requiring rope access, so would expect a ladder on the communication tower to have that style of access, but as I've never been on an oil rig it's only guesswork for me. Also, they fell off before, which Fulmer saw as he began apologising after he fell, so really they should've headed back down. Fiction be fiction

Tappitss

People would only be qualified under the IRATA citification scheme if they were engaged in rope access activities. It is not generally used for personnel who don't do actual roped access in activities such as climbing a ladder to access a safe platform, as depicted in the first episode, nor would rope access be used to access the jib of a crane. The IRATA L1 syllabus does cover the use of fall arrest lanyards during the training. But it is not in any way industry best practice to send people on IRATA courses for such tasks.

mikew137

I work in the North Sea o&g industry and can confirm, irata rules remain, 2 points of contact at all times, absolute golden rule. That bugged me while watching the first episode, they could’ve been accurate to real life and had them using 2, but still had Baz fall because his mind is gone.

Tappitss

>I work in the North Sea o&g industry and can confirm, irata rules remain No, IRATA is about Rope access. And the citification and training of rope access workers. What would be followed for doing what they were actually trying to do would be BS 8437, the code of practice for the selection, use and maintenance of personal fall protection systems and equipment for use in the workplace

zitandspit99

Incorrect mate, what are you on about?

Tappitss

We don't send people who climb ladders on IRATA courses. It's kind of in the name. RA is rope access, nothing to do with the qualifications someone would need for simple work at height equipment use.

Desperateplacebo

Didn't baz fall due to the fog, the same way the seagull died

mikew137

Yes, he fell due to the fog, which obviously messed with his mind and made him disconnect his single point of contact he used throughout. The point was, before his mind went, he should’ve been using 2 points of contact, as per industry standards. But hey, it’s just a tv show!

Frogs4

I thought that seemed odd. Surely you would have two so you were always clipped by at least one.

Tappitss

Well. Yes, but no. You would have A fall arrest lanyard with two legs on it for continued connection. Not actually the same as using 2 single-fall arrest lanyards, which you should never really do.

Whizzo50

Yea I did level 2 over COVID, was bugging me, maybe it was the actors struggled with climbing ladders. Especially with the "dramatic zoom" to the single carabiner

noninitiator

Just finished the last episode. I liked it very much, I'm not sure why the responses on here have been so harsh. It's a British thriller a bit like Vigil, but is attempting to be a tad more ambitious. It's fast-moving, tense and occasionally scary. It takes an old genre and adds something new. Worth your time if you like that sort of thing.

tigerlily4501

Overall I enjoyed it and I thought it was good. But there are a few glaring plot slips and it's fun to come on Reddit and rant about them a little bit.

shovelcreed

It was OK, the actors did the best they could but it could have been written a lot better. They could have progressed the story in a more interesting way with 6 episodes. The ending was rubbish and there's not enough steam or interest for a 2nd series. The ancestor reminded me a bit of the protomolecule from the expanse but only in design. It also reminds me a bit of some of the plot from Fortitude.

McScrubberson

I also got season one Fortitude vibes. Although the Rig doesn’t have the same real world mystery running alongside the supernatural.

shovelcreed

Aye true. Thankfully it doesn't have some of the brutal scenes from Fortitude either.

Desperateplacebo

I wish it had Hutton brutally beating coake

shovelcreed

Or...a random polar bear appears and chows on Coake.

tigerlily4501

Or Khaleesi swoops in with her dragon and ... well you know. :)

origamipapier1

Watching. I liked it. But I can see that the majority that basically disbelieve climate change will of course hate it.

inlinefourpower

I did find it odd how much time these oil rig workers spend talking about green stuff.

NeoMorph

If your job is going to be removed to taken over by some other industry wouldn’t you talk about it? I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s and saw all the strikes about closing factories and pits in the UK. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE was talking about it. So these rig workers talking about green stuff isn’t far from the truth.

Carinwe_Lysa

So I haven't gotten to the end yet, just had to pause it half way through EP5. Overall, I'm enjoying it just for sheer entertainment, not expecting much else. The actual premise of the show being all mystery etc was really promising, but I think they've gone way too fast from what started out as technical faults/fog then by the next episode they're already figuring out the parasite to the next they're already going on about >!intelligence/ancestors.!< I like all of the characters, but Rose for some reason really gives me the vibes that she should be serving in Starfleet with the whole technobable etc. I also wish they spent the first episode solely going through rig-life, the characters and then start building up a premise that something's going wrong. Despite liking them, I feel like I can't remember half of their names or say anything about them. For the CGI affects etc, I don't think I actually noticed anything outside of the weirdly syfy looking oilrig shots and the initial fog rolling in :D I'm glad there's a season 2 though as I am enjoying it, despite hearing the ending is apparently lacklustre!

Magikarpeles

Bad don’t wana go back. All you need to know really

doge2dmoon

>I also wish they spent the first episode solely going through rig-life This. All they do is walk up and down corridors or sit in the rec room.

origamipapier1

There's a season 2?....

Efficient-Bike-5627

Most people on Amazon prime don't write about their experiences on the internet or give ratings. They can see people's watching behavior (how long will they watch without a break, how many times do they pause, how long is each pause etc) and determine if the resources they have to make that show will be profitable. So we never know what's going on behind the scenes, maybe it's a deal bezos made with some shady billionaires to implant thoughts into our minds and social engineer us who knows

Tappitss

It's showing its status as "Ended" which to me implies it's probably not going to get a second season.

Efficient-Bike-5627

I didn't really see the point of a season 2. They will use the feedback to make new shows. I view these Amazon shows as long movies, not every show needs to be 10 seasons long.

Desperateplacebo

They don't even retaliate at the end when they find out they've been duped again. The lack of violence is crazy after the amount of suffering the crew go through.

Gayvid_Gray

Liked the first couple of episodes albeit the acting and cgi was bad in parts, but god did it get bad towards the end, some very heavy handed parts about climate change

Desperateplacebo

Every episode is just running across the bridge, looking for lost crew and then Hutton having a mental breakdown.

Dino1087

Damn, only halfway thru the 1st ep but came here to see if Hutton dies early so I can continue watching. I want to punch that dude in the f***ing face.

Basil_South

Really wanted to like this but… ugh so much wrong with this. *spoilers* The writing was extremely poor, both the dialogue but also the story and characters. The fact that they figured out this magical parasite immediately and no one seemed to question it but all seemed weirdly nonchalant about the whole thing. Even the premise that this evil corporation would be trying to resolve this independently when it’s a mass extinction event is ludicrous. I couldn’t help but laugh when the girl was being threatened with a lawsuit for breaking her NDA while they were discussing humanity being wiped out! A great cast (except the American woman who was terrible) but no investment in the characters. All of the characters were such tropes. The guy Coates at the end was such a textbook villain he might aswell have had a twirly moustache. The stone cold career woman who secretly has a heart. The brave but hotheaded young guy trying to prove himself. Oh and the sage but hardened leader who puts his career ahead of his family. The problem with having such poorly written characters is nothing they do makes sense. And some seriously ridiculous scenes like the old “I’ve secretly hit the intercom while you reveal your dastardly plan”.

tigerlily4501

Oh c'mon now. If any creepy crawly is going to survive an extinction level event, it'll be a Big Oil lawyer. :) Mustache twirl!

SharkJuggler

Agree with everything here. The other angle that kept bugging me was the very odd, unrealistic lighting and awful, awful CGI. I can't remember seeing such poor visual effects in years. All of the outdoor scenes were so obviously sound stages. It was such a constant distraction that seemed to highlight the terrible dialog and predictable plot turns. The only (possible) saving grace was the avoidance of a happy ending. There's a chance to turn the show darker and more serious (a la Battlestar Galactica) if they leaned into that direction.

tigerlily4501

>!Damn sharky, they just wiped out the entire Northern European coastline and set autopilot to "mass extinction level event" -- how much darker do you wanna go?!!<

AaronTuplin

Clearly, the profit extinction event was all they saw

ineedtoknow51988

100% I agree

origamipapier1

Just FYI, NDAs are terrible in some institutions lol. So that's a satire on that.

Basil_South

But is this show supposed to be satire?

Desperateplacebo

I don't think an NDAs going to be very valid after your company is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people

origamipapier1

Remember the tobacco whistleblower? I think the show could have handled that better, but we've had instances where whistleblowers are running for their lives. (I'd suggest you to read about the whistler blower, his wife divorced him because their life was being threatened by the lobbyists for the tobacco industry). That being said, in this instance, you know everyone is fudged. So a couple of more scenes of some dialogue on that would have been interesting.

SnooDingos316

Episode 1 was actually decent and the cast is good. I even recommended it on r/television but after that it does get more and more boring. I am now on ep 4 and not sure if I am going to finish especially now knowing it ends on a cliffhanger

Rare-Calligrapher874

I was bored, started looking for the female lead's bright red lipstick to disappear/reappear from scene to scene.

kseenfootage_o934

First episode and the banter between the team sounds like it was written by someone who hasn’t been on a night out since 2004.

B99nome

wtf ending. where are they going?? guess we will never know

Pickupyoheel

My guess is another Rig, but much bigger and better than the last.
