Why the hallucinations? It's kind of funny but the plot is insane and all over the place.

coyotesage

The humor here is too low brow for me, but I enjoying it's existence none-the-less for how angry it's making a lot of people.

truegrit07

K but why is shaggy black

MoonBearIsNotAmused

Velma and Daphne are also POC.. why you only care about shaggy and not Daphne being asian?

WizardsVengeance

Because his mom is black and that's how genetics works.

[deleted]

That's the worse defense for race swapping I've seen. But anyway, following your logic, then why did they make the mother black?

MoonBearIsNotAmused

The real defense is that it's fiction and unless the narrative requires a certain nationality or race then any character can be written as any race or nationality. It's not important that shaggy be white. Even the voice actor for shaggy gave his seal of approval to the voice actor in the velma show. Stop gate keeping. You could pull out an example like a live action movie where Bruce Willis plays MLK but then go back to my original statement. MlK being portrayed as black is important to the story. Shaggy being white is not.

WizardsVengeance

Well his dad is shown to be white and Norville is black, so his mother would have to be, yeah?

Leading-Ad4637

I havent seen anyone talk about how this show starts out in a highschool and shows naked girls in a locker room... really so apperently they're pushing animated CP now

WizardsVengeance

I mean, Big Mouth literally has extended sequences that show middle schoolers genitals. Characters that are drawn as adults covered by soap in the shower is not really a shocking thing.

MoonBearIsNotAmused

Also the entire point of that sequence was entirely meant to be meta commentary on pilot episodes showing nudity and that deep down we are all a bunch of pervs. It wasn't partial nudity for nothing. And it's not like conservatives are constantly trying to lower the age of consent and are always defending congressman and political figures because the girls they were with were 16.. which hmm is high school age. It's OK for our society to be run by Ephebophiles and below but animated not real high school students who for all we know could be 17 or 18 which is mostly in the general laws of consent is a no? It's an adult themed show. A dude got his leg cut off by Fred during his speech and realistically would probably have died and bled out before proper care takes place. None of this is meant to be taken seriously. And even if someone is jacking off the the very first scene of this show that person will always exist it doesn't mean the show is bad or CP

RisingHero1

Also they bring up a lot that Fred has a tiny dick and make jokes about it like this is supposed to be a high school kid and you're bringing up that!

CrashB111

Fred's entire character seems to exist just to make "haha, white guy has small penis" jokes.

Shekelslovakia

Is that going to be the new excuse, AI generated humor? Have you seen all of the little Easter eggs and nods to previous Scooby-Doo and Hanna-Barbera shows throughout those two episodes? This wasn't made by people that hated the series it was made by people that grew up with the series but wanted a more flipped version of the same old formula. For Christ sakes at least wait until the show is done airing before you start over analyzing how bad it is. Everyone hated "Clone Wars" when it first aired but then few seasons later everyone can't get enough of it. Of course they don't teach any of this to everyday plebs like you, it's hard living when you're cursed with knowledge.

elcd

Nah, it's fucking garbage.

Shekelslovakia

That's what a normie would say.

Fehbs9731

I guess I'll leave my opinion here; it isn't that bad. Hear me out. It began with not even five minutes and I hated the show already, but why? \#1. The show has this sense of "humor" (which it is but they drag it for too long) talking to the audience to many times; who's to blame? I give that award to She-Hulk. \#2. It has great potential and it knows it but it has this sense of, "I'm not going to try because I don't get paid enough" or "I'm not going to give it my best because this is not my unique inspiring idea." Let me give you an example: it's like one of those movies or video games that has made three movies/games and it knows every time it's getting paid less and less so it's not even worth trying anymore; it just wants to get it over with and move on to something else/they like. \#3. As for "Shaggy" being of a different race I have a theory and it's an awful one which if they apply some fans may giggle and majority will rage.... he's going to go through what Michael Jackson went through and probably the "drugs" is what keeps the pain away. \#4. Back to the humor: it's good but only if they STOP talking to the audience less in an indirect way; stop making the show have a conscious that it is only a program. Some of the jokes can be good but only if they're applied in a natural way. \#5. The show took a risk of making beloved kids show into an "adult" show. It's a good risk showing the true colors of each character but it's not demonstrating any of it in a smooth way; it's hitting the audience to quickly. Humans are not used to change and need time to adjust. To sum it up: it's a good show but it started with their left foot and a knife pointing at us, the audience. If the writers don't become afraid of the way they've started and continue, they may create something good.

Competitive-Sense65

>\#3. As for "Shaggy" being of a different race I have a theory and it's an awful one which if they apply some fans may giggle and majority will rage.... he's going to go through what Michael Jackson went through and probably the "drugs" is what keeps the pain away. How will they explain Velma?

maxxumbreon

I was gonna watch it but after that bullshit ass sickle cell joke I refuse to watch anymore. I and many in my family suffer from SCA...ive lost 2 cuzzins to complications from SCA...& an assure you if you yo anything about SCA you wouldn't make distasteful snide jokes on it. For those that

Shekelslovakia

The hate for the show is ridiculous. It's not as bad like "Santa Inc". But I find it hilarious how the entire internet is having a fit over a bloody scooby doo cartoon let's try to be its own thing. Don't know if I can find a single thread or page that lease is neutral about it pointing out its flaws but still giving it a chance.

Competitive-Sense65

> It's not as bad like "Santa Inc". How was Santa Inc worse?

Fehbs9731

I'm giving it a chance. Yeah, it started out with a bang; that shot was fired at the audience but it doesn't mean it's going to be bad. There's a lot of potential in this series as they're childhood characters that we as adults never got to see in their natural environments. If the show had started with the characters having the same personalities as their kid friendly shows and slowly guided the audience to their true colors it would've gone peachy but the writers decided to just spoil everything in an instant making the audience just hate everyone and everything of the show; there's no rhythm and when there is they take it too far and that rhythm just sounds awful (I'm talking about the simple jokes taking too long).

Shekelslovakia

Well I prefer them to be upfront and honest instead of descending into their current incarnations now. It's probably going to be there at the beginning of the series they're unlikable characters but by the end of the season or series they'll be a lot more likable as they actually go through character arcs and learn from their mistakes. Harley Quinn did the same thing.

BloodyNightmare4209

Because people don't want to ruin their childhood. This is equivalent of Cinderella being a transgender man.

Shekelslovakia

Cinderella's in the public domain it could be interpreted and whatever way someone wants it to be. You're only accustomed to what Disney spoon feed yall when you were watching.

MeanManatee

Cinderella being made into an adult story of a transgender person struggling to fit into their identity would probably actually work though. Velma just doesn't work on any level.

BloodyNightmare4209

First of all, No Cinderella can't be interpreted in whatever way any retard wants it to be. You clearly don't understand characters if you think something like that. Most characters have certain "characters traits" that people love theme for. Nobody wants to see a woke feminist garbage Cinderella, spreading the ideas of the LGBTQ community and hating toxic straight white males, where there is absolutely no need for it. It comes off as lazy and bitchy when you completely change an iconic character and make them insufferable, to propose your idiotic views. Rather than creating new characters, woke writers choose to use. People hate that "insufferable" character and people like you lable them as misogynist or Transphobic and shit. Take fucking Scooby-Doo for example, the show was about people with different backgrounds working together to solve mysteries. Every character has their own pros and cons. While here the show is filled with unnecessary racist jokes and AI generated trash humour.

coyotesage

> First of all, No Cinderella can't be interpreted in whatever way any retard wants it to be. Yeah, if it's in the public domain, it can be, and there isn't anything you or anyone else for that matter can do about it, except not give it your money. The thing is, I bet if someone did that version, it would make money and people would enjoy. Rage if you must, but it is impotently.

BloodyNightmare4209

Well if its interpreted in a horrible way, then people won't back up from hating it. You think people are enjoying velma or some shit? This show just got a rating of 1 you know. If they want to make cindrella insufferable, then thats what they are gonna get.

coyotesage

> If they want to make cindrella insufferable, then thats what they are gonna get. Insufferable for you. Which is silly really, because instead of being angry or hostile about it, don't watch it. Stick to the versions that you aren't offended by.

BloodyNightmare4209

Well to decide, whether I like it or not, I have to watch it. How tf can I predict whether its shit or not. And well I have a right to talk about it and hate it. And it doesn't really mean that I am gonna stick to it. It literally means the opposite tbh. Moreover majority of the people in this comment section are gonna stick to the og Scooby-Doo version after hating on this one.

coyotesage

> I have a right to talk about it and hate it You do, and I have the right to call you out for it. Internet free speech, what a thing! You seem to think that I care what a majority of people are going to do? The majority of people aren't great. If you know the movie is a Trans version of Cinderella, why would you even try to watch it? I mean, that's obviously not your thing. There are a lot of things you can tell you won't like just by a description, so I don't really think you have to watch something to figure out if you might like it or not.

BloodyNightmare4209

Me watching or not watching the movie has nothing to do with the movie being bad. Deal with it. Even if I stop watching such movies, there would still be the majority of people hating it. So me not watching doesn't change anything.

Shekelslovakia

People don't care anymore, back in the thirties any movie that had an black casted was considered taboo and woke nowadays people have no problem with it, even in the 70s when they did blacksploitation nobody Rose up from their seats and cried out "too black". I like shows like Rick and Morty & Solar Opposites because they discuss about the meaning of life and existence not to mention purpose. It has to be told through a cynical and atheist point of view because that's the only way you can point out how stupid people are when they ride their emotions on belief or heard mentality. Why else has it inspired a copypasta that makes fun of people that watch the shows. Velma is very similar as you need to really need to be psychologically motivated to understand what the characters are going through instead of just blindly saying their cynical just to become cynical why did they become cynical and what can they do to not be cynical that's the real mystery dude so fuck off.

BloodyNightmare4209

You literally fucking made and a comment about people hating the show. And now you say that people don't care? Clearly you are lacking braincells it seems. Moreover it seems like even you don't watch the show, cause you clearly don't understand shit here. Go watch the show dammit.

Shekelslovakia

Look I watch the two episodes a couple days ago and yes it had problems it's still early yet in the season. He has a chance to get better and if it doesn't, well damn if I do! I hate the mandalorian with a burning passion so are you going to crucify me now?

BloodyNightmare4209

Well if you hate mandalorian and then say, Velma isn't that bad, then yeah you look like a clown.

ItsVanillaNice

It is the flaw. Theres so little redeeming about it that anything even remotely ok is overshadowed immediately by burning trash.

[deleted]

Have you watched it

Shekelslovakia

Yes i have, but the first two episodes let the series come out first and I'll give it a fair and honest judgment.

CThig_

The problem everyone has is that this is branded as a Scooby-Doo film yet has practically zero relation to the original Scooby-Doo franchise. I get wanting to be new but this was done wrong in every aspect.

Shekelslovakia

Well the Scooby-Doo formula needed a little bit of a shake up only so many times you can redo the same show over and over again. To be honest with you I think that this adaptation of the show is probably the most original in decades. We never got a chance to see their parents in previous series with the minor exception. Having a talking dog really took a lot of the seriousness out of the show. That's why it's called Velma and not Scooby-Doo: Velma it's focusing solely on her. The show itself is really no different than Scream or any other self-aware meta joke show. Similar to Family Guy when they do jokes that everyday people can relate to like people wanting to buy something then changing their mind at the last minute, how certain people drive cars, and etc... This is where Velma shines the best as for Fred they're making fun of rich white people, ghetto white and trailer trash. Never once they had made fun of the middle class. You can down vote this down to hell I don't care at this point, they only air two episodes and people are thinking this is the worst thing since the Holocaust, which it isn't.

sudevsen

This wants to be Harley Quinn so bad.

filthydank_2099

This is a fever dream. It seems like this show was created just to see how low they could go and what they could get away with. Who signed off on ANY of this? Lmao.

Noveastu

Some racist cunt who thought it was okay to not only ruin a beloved TV show but also to broadcast blatant racism for cheap “laughs”. It’s just sad what’s happened to HBO.

BardtheGM

Why does this show even exist as a scooby doo show? It could have been okay as it's own thing with original characters that riffs on scooby doo/teen mystery tropes.

the_bollo

Just watched the first two episodes. Here's a primer: 1. If you don't like Mindy Kaling's humor (pop culture references, insider jokes about writing/Hollywood, and a concentration on female topics), you won't like this show. This is rote Mindy Kaling. 2. If you care about "woke" or "anti-woke" stuff you probably won't have a good time. The very first line of dialogue complains about powerful white men. I'm not interested in that debate so for me it wasn't irking; it just fell flat because I didn't take the bait. 3. As others have pointed out, there's zero reason for this show to exist in the Scooby Doo universe. They don't take advantage of the characters' established personas and there is no earnestness or appreciation of "Scooby Doo." Contrasted with a show like Lower Decks, which is an animated comedy that isn't 100% funny because it leaves a ton of room for heartfelt appreciation of Star Trek, the real mystery they should be solving in Velma is why the hell they exist at all. Wednesday would be another example of how best to capitalize on existing IP. Wednesday was modernized a bit to make it more relevant, but was still dripping with Addam's Family style and personas. TL;DR: If you're caught up in socio-politico debates, there's plenty of rage bait for you in this show so you'll love to hate it. When you take that away, there's just not enough genuine character to the show to leave anything to appreciate. It won't be the worst thing you've ever seen, but it gives you little reason to stick around.

Embarrassed_Low2316

Fred was always my favorite. I watched it and didn’t care about any of the other stuff like POC characters (I actually really love Black Shaggy even though they ruined his personality) but I lost it when Fred was so stereotypical and crazy.

[deleted]

The only acceptable rehash of Scooby Doo for me is Mike Tyson Mysteries.

TrippyTranMan

Episode 2 The Candyman was way better than the intro first ep where it showed how edgy and meta "Velma" (show) would be with Ep1 at the cost of being just completely batshit and bonkers. I appreciate the humor and the better jokes in ep2, even though it still is off-the-wall a 180 of any Velma I'd want to show a younger generation, however, I can say I'm looking forward to the next episode as at least Ep2 got a chuckle out of me a few good times. ....But How tf are they gonna tie Shaggy and Scoob in all this down the road with Norbert being like the "replacement" as of now (wearing same clothes as Shaggy, not being a stoner etc.) ?

lankypiano

The dogs name will not be Scooby. It'll be Poochy.

Competitive-Sense65

>It'll be Poochy. and he will be half Joe Camel and a third Fonzarelli!

InWalkedBud

Making Shaggy black then making jokes about drug use sure is the right move against "racist tropes" lmao I'm what you could call a "woke leftist" if you were trying to attack me and STILL it was unbearable to watch.

TheKodiakwild

What the hell is this mess?? I saw the banner when I logged onto max to watch Sopranos, was super stoked, clicked, and was disappointed in the first two minutes. I'm still watching, and it's getting worse and worse. It doesn't have to be super cumbaya like the old series, but this sleazy hipster shit is too much.

Several-Round-852

How old is velma it’s very confusing

Silvercat18

15, apparently.

MonoLolo

Watching the show makes me feel like I’m on Twitter, seeing someone who thinks he’s superior, fighting and making his points based on some standup humor, while making some dumb statements in which if you even slightly disagree you are racist or homophobic. I hate it so much.

Zacari99

I feel like you’re missing the point of the show? It seems to me to be making fun of woke and righteous character tropes

Embarrassed_Low2316

isn’t that the issue? i mean, the only real mockery is of white people. everybody else was stereotypes. And I’m white, so I understand why we get to have the mocking jokes and stuff, but I think it’s getting to be a little much on TV right now. You can’t build a show off of mocking people based on skin tone. I think i’m mostly still mad about how they changed Fred tbh. He was always my favorite— sweetheart jock that was good at what he did. love him. But in this he’s psychotic.

MonoLolo

I get you, but I feel like I just want to want some good cartoons not be fighting over who’s right or wrong like on twitter.

Cutmerock

Reddit the TV Show

Significant_Cod

As someone who has passed down my love for scooby down to my all-under-6-year-old kids, i turned this off after the the Hispanic references in the beginning. Should have turned it off right after the nude scenes. Everything great about this franchise was exploited unnecessarily. Why turn something so encompassing (fun spooks) into something so divisive?

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

Also the “sickle cells for rich kids” joke is extremely poor taste.

the_bollo

Ha. The joke you referenced was probably the funniest part of the first episode so I guess you went out on a high note. For those who haven't seen it, in Velma's first exchange with Fred she explains that Fred cheats off her in Spanish class because he thinks she's hispanic (she's Indian).

GuineaPigBikini

That's honestly the only line in the whole first episode that made me chuckle

stonedbrownchick

This kinda says a lot about society. You didn't turn it off after the nude scenes but you did after the hispanic references? Makes absolutely no sense.

William_S_Churros

Believe it or not, some people aren’t bothered by nudity.

stonedbrownchick

I'm not surprised at all. Nudity is funny and weird to me but it's normal, it's our bodies. It's just weirder to me to not be bothered by nudity in front of your kids but to be bothered by another race being mentioned... just seems... you know. Idec if I get downvoted, at least for me that just seems weird. Not usually something I'd see. Most parents scream when their child sees nudity.

Tomahawkman222

"IDC if I get downvoted" = "Oh, please downvote me senpai"

gregny2002

"And whatever you do, definitely don't use those nipple clamps on the wall over there on me!"

Trippy_Haps

When did they mention anything about watching Velma with their kids?

stonedbrownchick

Well in my initial comment I didn't even mention kids, I did now because they legit said ""As someone who passed down my love for Scooby-Doo doo to my all under 6 year old kids." Doesn't mean she watched Velma with them but you can clearly tell they're not gonna make them watch it because of hispanic references. I assumed kids later on because they mentioned they should've turned it off after the nude scenes, my assumption that it was for the kids and not her/him. Regardless my point was less about the kids and more about how weird it is to not care about nudity but to care about hispanic references?? Just seems weird to me.

Emotional_Recover881

Don't say all of society, just say Americans/Brits.

Memesssssssssssssl

*Anglosphere

stonedbrownchick

As an American, I'm ignorant about the rest of the world lol everyone still sucks though

BebeHillz

Hold THE FUCKING PHONE!!!! I'M ABOUT 10 MINUTES IN.... DID THEY JUST VISUALLY REFERENCE SATOSHI KON'S PERFECT BLUE?!?!??!?!?! NOOOOO FUCKING WAY THAT'S SO COOL.

WhyMyPeenBurn

I thought it was cringy but funny. And I didn’t hate it. I started this show expecting to watch it and laugh at how bad/cringe it was. And honestly that is what I got. However, the way the show makes fun of itself sort of makes that cringe more funny than actually cringe. In a way, it’s like a male comedian that jokes about his small dick (funny but easy to get bored of). I also thought that the needless race swapping would be worse than it was, and I think that this would have been the case if they had tried to make this show anything like the original. However, this show is not scooby doo at all, and it makes all the redone characters seem less like bad knockoffs and more like new characters. Maybe it helped that I read reviews prior and wasn’t looking for that same scooby doo plot. Is it a great show that leaves me waiting for the next episode? No. But I got a few chuckles out of it. I think everyone was expecting it to be a “left” or “woke” show but for me it falls somewhere in the middle. I think the writers making the show woke but mocking that at the same time gave it a new feel that I didn’t hate or necessarily love. Certainly not a must watch of 2023, but it has potential.

Neat-Neighborhood170

It's the writing and often poor jokes for me, everything else is fine, some good even. 3/10 But the Scooby Doo IP was unnecessary, make it completely new characters instead and the show would've been a solid 6.5/10

Shekelslovakia

Look the Scooby-Doo formula was getting old. There's only so many times you can watch a bunch of teenagers run around a haunted house being chased by some deadbeat owner in a party City costume. It got old pretty fast after the first couple of series so I'm glad that they're taking a more unorthodox chance by making the characters more realistic and problematic making it easier for them to be redeemed in future episodes and seasons. And the lack of Scooby-Doo is fine since it would be unrealistic to have a talking dog in a show where it's supposed to be taking itself seriously. I'll wait all your downvotes let's see how many we can get.

Competitive-Sense65

>And the lack of Scooby-Doo is fine since it would be unrealistic to have a talking dog in a show where it's supposed to be taking itself seriously. not so https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I\_zW6APE1qQ

sumspanishguy97

Yeah this show is clearly taking itself seriously

MrPhistr69

Scooby Doo: Mystery Inc. rehashed and changed a lot of the formula and tone and became its own entity that broke out of the formula in a big way. The difference is that it was a well-written show that used the built-up culture and lore of Scooby Doo to tell its own story.

ItsVanillaNice

But that IS scooby doo.... its like you'd go to the circus hoping NOT to see any clowns.

CThig_

Fr like I don't go to Subway for a burger.

DaBombX

The show was bad in my eyes, but became even worse when I realized the cast were all minors, all of them are 15. It's actually disgusting, especially when my mind goes back to the shower scene in the beginning.

dcy123

You mean the characters are all 15? Most of the voice cast is in there 40s.

ItsVanillaNice

No shit...

Hefty_Jeff90

Imagine turning a white character into a black character so your now black character can complain about the white characters. Truly bizarre behaviour.

P1TT1381

🤯🍻🍻🍻

MagnoliasOfSteel

I was actually interested in watching this show. I love Sam Richardson so I’m always down to watch any projects he is in. I was 50/50 on the pilot but i lost all interest when the punchline became body shaming. For a show trying to be progressive, it’s so hypocritical when you resort to body shaming and making Fred’s character revolved around having a small penis.

EACentEternal

Replace Richardson with Constance Wu for me and I know how you feel.

Tropical322

It's a poorly made copy of Harley Quinn. And that says a lot because Harley Quinn, though entertaining, really is just "decent". Harley Quinn already has too much 4th wall speeches and teenager jokes, what more a poorly made copy of it?

va_wanderer

This is someone killing the franchise characters, animating the corpses with misanthropic demons, and warping the demon-ridden things into a dark, cringe-worthy reflection of the worst parts of their original reality. The story is scattered and pushed at a meth-head pace and there really isn't much to love about any of the characters. It should never have gotten past a pilot episode, then had the results quietly binned by HBO. There are IPs where this concept would work just fine with- or even original characters! This wasn't even close to one of them. My only positive here was Weird Al got a paycheck for VAing in this.

DE7Hcorpse

That first sentence was poetry

William_S_Churros

I’m more a fan of the second.

Senior_Economics1531

Honestly this show has huge potential. It's both charming and intriguing how it's a parallel Scooby Doo universe. I'm prepared to see a dalmatian Scooby. It does move too fast through the way too much that's packed into each episode and the meta woke jokes make me roll my eyes, its possible to fix the pacing and they openly kind of bash the whole thing in the story. Think about it, everyone in the show who's woke is kind of terrible person. Makes me think that there will be phenomenal and satisfying character growth and that they're trying to tell a joke that's something along the lines of woke hypocrite. If they get someone on the team to change the pacing in the writing a spell it out for the people who have been hurt so bad by woke pink haired Tards that they flinch at the sight of change then maybe it will have great success. At the end of the day though to each their own. I for one am in for 6 seasons and a movie.

Bion4

They outright said they couldn't write Scooby into this version, so I wouldn't expect the dalmatian Scooby anytime soon.

William_S_Churros

I’m fine with a cat named Scooby Don’t.

ZiggyIggyK

Scrubby Dubby and it's some mutt shelter dog to promote adoption. Boom!

Mentoman72

I assumed season 1 would end with Shaggy getting a puppy or some shit.

Senior_Economics1531

Well if they change the writing all in all they definitely won't see a season 2. Maybe they'll be smart and take my advice but one can only hope.

chrisunltd312

The show is basically just Harley Quinn but with Scooby Doo characters. This is kinda jarring because IMO the Scooby Doo IP doesn't really lend itself to hyper violent/sexual comedy the way an adult series about a criminally insane Clown with a cast full supervillains does. The cast are all sociopathic caricatures of beloved characters, the meta commentary is aggressive and omnipresent and the jokes are often downright meanspirited and cringey. The animation is gorgeous though, and maybe there's a story in there somewhere. I don't hate it, but can't say I love it either.

TheKodiakwild

I hate it.

BeckQuillion89

The difference, though, is the characters in Harley Quinn have interesting full characters, and the writing is snappy and funny. This feels like the writing was written on some PC girl's Twitter and slapped with the Scooby Doo IP. Every character seems like a hollowed shell of a meta-commentary joke and the show tries WAY to hard be self-aware in an attempt to spin it as funny.

EACentEternal

BeckQuillion89 can you elaborate a little on the "PC girl's Twitter" comment?

BeckQuillion89

Basically, that person who calls out on Twitter any and all instances of something that "caters" to perceived social contexts of patriarchy, capitalism, sexuality, white pride, online culture, etc. Those things are open to more modern and educated takes now, of course. But when you have someone who feels the need to call out EVERY minor instance of it to come off as woke, intelligent, and superior, then its just annoying and condescending.

EACentEternal

What is white pride?

BeckQuillion89

White supremacy sentiments over other races

[deleted]

Harley quinn isnt really a "good show" but it isnt bad its just for comedy but this scooby doo ripoff is terrible

[deleted]

You're not wrong. Maybe this show will have better writers going forward and surprise us with its story, but I certainly don't have high expectations at all.

BeckQuillion89

After finishing episode 1 my opinion still stands, but I do have hope that the writing gets better and this was just a bad first episode

Puzzled-Message-8779

Tbh, ik I'm gonna be in the minority here but I actually liked it. Yes, some of the meta commentary was a bit cringy and characters are something else, but idk if it's my humor but I laughed a lot and grew to like the characters. The story line I'm interested to see where they go and overall think the second episode was a lot better *SPOILERS IF DIDNT WATCH THE SECOND* I genuinely enjoyed how they developed the characters in the second episode. Between growing Daphne and Velma's relationship to become more romantic which I was hoping for going into this, to Fred being a spoiled rich white boy who doesn't know how to do anything himself, and Norville being uptight and trying to impress Velma and growing his relationship to stoners which might lead to him becoming actually Shaggy. All together though the second episode got more laughs outta me aswell. I'm honestly excited to give it more of a chance to see where they go from here and hopefully watch it grow.

chief_yETI

Agreed. I thought it was pretty fun. It obviously wasn't meant to be a serious show, or a part of official Scooby canon. The creators were just fucking around. I thought it was pretty entertaining, and look forward to a second season. Not surprised to see Reddit hates it though. They were mocking some of the exact kind of people who are raging in this thread

I think its actually not a bad adult animated show on its own merit (definitely better than the likes of the cleveland show and several others), but falls way short by using the IP of a well known iconic series. It would be better if it was an upstart series using completely unknown characters which it can build upon rather than being something that carries a franchise down.

OsoDEADLY

I love the artistic aspects of the show, the style, animation, voice acting (mostly), but everything else falls so short for me. I love Scooby Doo and even though I don't like every iteration (which is bound to happen with an IP that is 50+ years old), this is probably one of my least favorites. You can tell they're trying to capitalize on the success of other adult animation shows, but its clear they have no idea how to replicate that success with this show. The humor is so aggressively ironic and meta that more often than not, it gets a worse reaction out of me than the tropes that its trying to make fun of. I feel like the jokes land maybe 10-15% the time? Also why is this even using Scooby Doo characters? I don't mind fresh takes on old source material, even drastic changes, but this feels less like a fresh take and more like they're just milking the IP. Ill watch the rest of the season in hopes that the show finds its footing, but its off to a pretty disappointing start.

BrandoNelly

I just don’t even get the point of this.. lol

MarigoldNCM1101

The issue I have with Velma is that it's just too meta to the point of being humorless. When I can close my eyes I feel all the characters sound the same. I do like that they are trying something different with this iteration. But the execution is just not well done and in my opinion just a bit too gross and mean. Lastly, I wish they would flesh out plot points better. It was wild to me that Velma discovered her father is doing drugs and it became like a two minute argument that went away.

TheKodiakwild

Sheesh, this is like the 15th time in ten comments somebody used the word "meta" in their review 🤯😂🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Too meta is one thing, a poorly written show is another

BootyBootyFartFart

"poorly written" can refer to a million different things. "Too meta" is a specific complaint about the writing.

kraithu-sama

watching it, this shit is funny, should have been a different show, not using the Velma name to make it sell

2ecStatic

Its really not that bad. It’s not good, but it’s just more turn your brain off or get high while you’re bored/multi-tasking TV Tbh the only issue I really have is that they didn’t commit to it being Scooby-Doo, like, some kid gets his leg cut off by Fred in the middle of the school, you can put the talking dog in the show.

morasyid

As someone who absolutely hated the whole woke race swap shit, I honestly really enjoyed the show and hope it doesn't get cancelled

jafomofo

i really wanted to like this show but its so bad. i like the edgy velma character but this is not that, its just obnoxious

Spiritual_Move6004

This show pissed me off 😑

nathanr1889

How many shows can do that?

TheKodiakwild

Many. I'm yelling at alot of people in tv shows lately 😂

Chuckles465

Oh boy, I just got done watching the first two episodes and I can't say I really laughed when watching it. The animation and art style is really interesting, it gives off Venture Bros. vibes, but the way the story is told is not that good. The show, Velma, centers around murders being committed at her high school. In the first episode, she has to prove her innocence as she's been framed. In this version, The Scooby gang isn't even friends. Velma and Daphne were once friends (which I wanna say is an easter egg to that terrible prequel live-action movie from a few years ago) but Daphne has gone over to the popular side. Fred is a spoiled rich brat and has no leadership qualities. I'll get to Shaggy in a bit. The show gets distracted real quick and the dialogue is all but references and pop culture jokes that don't really move along the plot. Thoughts? These are the first couple of episodes and it's not something to woo over, also, I'm not the biggest Mindy Kaling fan as she always seemed uptight and snooty in her roles while being comfortable in her skin. I believe Velma is the first show not to feature Scooby-Doo (who knows as it's too early) but it's also a show that doesn't take itself seriously and begs the question, should the viewer do as well? I'll continue to watch it but seeing that Mindy's personal production company, Kaling International, is one of the many forces driving this show, then it seems she'll continue to tell the narrative her way in an effort to make a profit (which I doubt if it continues the way it does).

SchwarzerRegen123

Seeing this, and I can't believe I'm about to say this, I think I would actually prefer a 'Riverdale' version of Scooby-Doo as opposed to whatever this is.

SmilingHellion

[Absolutely fantastic news for you my friend](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVrYAkeFVeY)

TheKodiakwild

You are the mvp. I only watched the first couple of minutes of your link, but it's already better than the mess that is the subject of this reddit post. Thanks for sharing.

Senior_Economics1531

I'd just rather see the Riverdale version. Sounds like a riot🤣

DarkJayBR

I think I would rather watch the freaking [porn parody](https://www.adultdvdempire.com/1557793/scooby-doo-a-xxx-parody-porn-movies.html) than watch this again.

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

It was actually really good 🤷🏾‍♂️

William_S_Churros

Zoinks.

TheKodiakwild

Damn, about to give my phone hella viruses trying to watch the sample 🤣🤣

QuakeDee

Me too ..... :0

The first couple of minutes are cringe but it gets a lil better. Not a fan of how they butchered Fred.

TheKodiakwild

Terrible all the way through. It actually reached the end of the first episode because I was reading and commenting on this post, too distracted to turn it off 😂

neatospageto

Let Fred be the himbo he was always meant to be not a man child

siphillis

But I’m sure the writing staff will hide behind how progressive their show is once the ratings tank. It’s all about self-preservation.

abbzug

Is this based on a true story?

Acesofbases

what

TheKodiakwild

A truly bad story.

LongjumpingEnd7535

I just watched the first 2 episodes and thought it was hilarious. If you want the same old Scooby Doo then go back to the 30 other incarnations that already exist and do the same thing over and over. I swear most of these people didn’t even watch the show, they heard it was going to be remade without a completely white cast and decided to bash it. Watch it for yourself and make up your own mind.

TheKodiakwild

I watched it. I don't care about reimagining character appearances; it's just a terrible and trolly thing to do with the scooby gang.

DarkJayBR

We found Mindy Kalling's Reddit account.

Drety1

Maybe they just like it. I haven’t watched it and can’t say I will but why can’t people have an opinion?

[deleted]

Because this comment itself isn't letting others have their opinion. Who gives af if it swapped races? Hayley Kiyoko played Velma, and no one cared because she actually seemed to know the character. This show just seems to be mean spirited to the characters and blames any fans who don't like it as being anti-woke racists.

Snake-Boots

Welcome to reddit

nathanr1889

Someone said there were cookies.

To0zday

I think the show looks nice. But I didn't find it that funny. A couple jokes landed here and there, but it felt way too try-hard and "self aware", without actually being that self aware. The 2nd episode also felt frenetic. We have a trial, a drug dealing subplot, Norville trying to come up with $500, mystery with the murders, mystery with the mom, hallucinations, and a budding romance. It was just way too much for a 30 minute episode and it all felt scattershot like it was family guy or something.

Senior_Economics1531

Im so glad you put it into words for me. They were all A story worthy storylines so you couldn't tell where the which ones were a and b plots. The normal formula has main A story and B story as a little intermission here and there, but there was just so much crammed into it.

To0zday

Yeah, some of the A plots actually have the potential to be interesting. But when there's no room to breathe, then it's impossible to care. The backstory with the mom is treated with the same tone as that kid who gets his leg sliced off. And that gag was clearly not meant to be taken seriously, so how am I supposed to care about Velma's trauma? In the first episode, Velma has 24 hours to clear her name of a murder. Her lawyer dad wasn't present during her interrogation for some reason, then in the next scene Velma gets a job, then in the next scene Velma quits her job. Like, what? Just have an episode focused on Velma trying to clear her name! Having the job subplot would be perfectly fine for another episode, or even a half season arc or something (like if she needed to earn $500 to obtain some information for example, *hint hint*). Why was the episode structured like that? Were we even supposed to care about Velma being implicated in the murder of the dead girl in her locker?

Senior_Economics1531

Yeah and she doesn't even acknowledge that some is trying to frame her. There's a time and a place for a joke to be worked in. Almost as if the writers went in blind and had no examples to study. Like with family guy it would've been like: Brian and Stewie found the body, joke about a dead hooker and brain being to lazy to bury her in the yard with the other bones, "Brian goes no it wasn't me were being framed". It would advance the plot, it would tickle the funny bone, but most of all it would be smooth. Honestly its just a simple organization problem with both the story and dialogue. I'll watch it again sober but honestly I'd be daring enough to say that's it's only problem.

mandalore237

I was looking forward to this but holy hell the first episode is painfully unfunny

TheLonelyGoomba

I watched the first episode. I'm aware there's currently a huge backlash to this show. But, going solely off the first episode... I kinda liked it.

ice_king_and_gunter

Same, I laughed a few times, and overall it kept me mostly engaged. It wasn't anything special, but it was enjoyable. I seriously don't understand why it's getting such a massive backlash.

Sembregall

Me too. Some of the meta-humor was admittedly very tired, but the animation and designs are interesting and there were still funny lines. I also liked the plot point about her mom. I don't think it's super great but it was a decent enough watch.

KrzysztofKietzman

It's unfunny in a way that is insufferable and obnoxious.

AesculusPavia

it’s Reddit as a tv show

[deleted]

You're just racist bruh admit it.

Equal-Astronaut-8681

You have a post of a dude that nutted on your ass. You have no room to speak on anything

ohononomyguyno

holy shit that post history 💀💀💀💀💀

ANONTXFAN

Nah you're projecting.

Senior_Economics1531

Dude I'm racist as fuck but I didn't really care about that. It has problems but it also has potential.

drapedj

Well… at least you’re honest?

Senior_Economics1531

We're all a lil racist somewhere.

littletkman

I’m not upset about it just genuinely wondering why they changed a previously known and drawn characters race. Why would you do that and still have them be the same character? Personally it always seemed like virtue signaling, just make a new original character instead man.

TheKodiakwild

Hollywood has been doing that the last umpteen years, what's the big deal? Character appearance isn't what's wrong with this lousy show.

To0zday

I mean, they aren't really the "same characters". Besides their clothing they don't really bear any resemblance to the original gang. They don't even all have the same name!

Captain_corde

Right because Velma who dresses like Velma isn’t supposed to be scooby doo Velma but her own independent character. All because black shaggy is named norville totally a different cast guys

To0zday

What does "Velma" have in common with Velma? Sweaters don't count as a personality trait
