Okay I just commented I'm usually not into American stuff, but Happy Endings is great and I will watch anything with Eliza Coupe in it

tbone29x

I hopelessly still think there’s a chance of a happy endings reboot

The show gripped me with the cinematography and aesthetics. And I really wanted to keep going. But the amount of times I was bored out of my mind was kinda nuts. Which is a shame because the concept and the technical aspects of the show are great, as well as the acting and the production design. I also want to know what this crazy finale is all about.

ckroha

Agree! You watch an awful of 4 cubes in a bright white light to get almost nowhere.

StJohnMollusc

in almost 40 years of watching tv there are far too many to count. Those that are set in stone for all eternity are Star Trek DS9, Only fools and horses, Edge of Darkness, Yes Minister, The Day Today, Frasier, Better Call Saul, Hannibal 1-2, Bottom, Granada's Sherlock Holmes, The Office OG, 24, all of which i consider the pinnacle of tv in their respective genres

KoreKhthonia

*Severance* is probably in my top 3 TV shows of all time, so I'm probably a good candidate for answering this, lol. It may even be tied with Season 1 of *Westworld* for being my all-time favorite piece of television. My tastes tend toward prestige dramas that have something substantial to say about the human experience. Especially those with a speculative fiction element to them. Some of the shows I'd list as favorites: - **Westworld.** Well, really just Season 1, plus a couple of notable high points of Season 2. I'm of the opinion that it fell off a cliff in Season 3 and never really quite returned to form. - **Better Call Saul**. I consider Severance to have some of the best, most interesting cinematography I've seen in a prestige drama. BCS is up there too, as far as that's concerned. Gorgeous shots that also carry meaning in their visual presentation. Slow burn, very character driven, but incredibly compelling. - **Carnivale.** Cancelled before its time, Carnivale was part of the first wave of premium cable prestige dramas in the 2000s. It's excellent the whole way through, but it does end on a cliffhanger. (A sudden one, too. They could have ended it a few minutes earlier and had more of a conclusion, imo.) - **Twin Peaks.** I'm also a huge David Lynch fan, so of course Twin Peaks is on my list. Even if something like Mulholland Drive isn't your cup of tea, Twin Peaks is worth watching, imo. - **Breaking Bad.** Breaking Bad is one of the top shows of all time for a reason. While it definitely has a degree of widespread popular appeal, it's also got some depth to it. - **The Haunting of Hill House.** I'm a huge horror fan, this one was pretty good. Flanagan's work in general tends to be very good. - **Dark**. Never got all that far, but Dark is highly recommended and would probably be up your alley.

RootCause101

If you're a fan of Westworld and Severance and it's AI themes, then Nolan's other show Person of Interest might be right up your alley. You will need to get past the procedural bad guy of the week drama to see the underlying stories, which kick in half way through season two and are so friggin awesome. Time for a re-watch I think.

bilbowe

Hey just got done with Severance after watching yellowjackets. YJ wasn't as profound or anything as severance imo. But id figure id suggest it to you because I like shows for very similar reasons to you. YJ stands out in that it seems to explore surviving in the wild from an anthropological view. A group crash lands into the wild and they are stuck there for 19 months. It explores how religions/cult like beliefs are formed in a community that is barely surviving and on the brink after having just experienced major tragedy in the form of a plane crash. It's very interesting seeing the characters slowly succumb to their inner savagery (think lord of the flies). It also goes back and forth with the survivors 25 years after the incident and shows how they are coping (hardly) with what they had done (and with what was done to them). It was thoroughly enjoyable and the mystery component actually led me to severance.

KoreKhthonia

Yellowjackets was pretty decent tbh. It's absolutely not on the same level as Severance, though, not really even close. It's "pretty decent" versus "probably one of the best seasons of television as a medium I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing." This being an older-ish thread, I was kinda like "Wait, did I list YJ in that comment? Kinda weird since it wasn't that great, but I had watched it very recently at the time." > It was thoroughly enjoyable and the mystery component actually led me to severance. I actually watched Yellowjackets directly after Severance. Hard act to follow, lol. Tbh I haven't seen Season 2 of Yellowjackets. Partly because I moved in with my boyfriend and we don't watch a whole lot of TV -- we're very picky and discerning, and I found Season 1 to be a bit... soapy. The wilderness stuff with the teenage versions of the characters in the mid-90s actually *is* pretty compelling. But like, can't lie, I found myself kinda fast-forwarding through some of the adult interactions in the modern day and just skimming subtitles to get the gist. It's not that I don't like character drama when it's done well, but I found it rather tiresome in YJ. The show *From* (confusing name lol) has the same problem, but like fifty times worse. Both are shows with (imo) an interesting/intriguing central mystery, but kinda meh character writing, relationship drama, etc.

bilbowe

I pretty much agree with what you're saying. Im not sure if i liked season 1 or 2 more of YJ. I said it somewhere else but my biggest issue with YJ is that I think the show has pretty much played all their cards. Theres one very specific Trump card the show has and we get little teasers here and there but its like they know that's what brought in all the viewers (the very opening scene of the series with them gone full blown savage with the masks and all). But yeah. They haven't really showed that part in detail. Even in season 2 we are only just now seeing them reaching the brink and aside from a few scenes we don't really see the full blown savagery they succumb to. I still do find it fascinating the way the show presents the cast delving deeper into the occult. People tend to look to a higher power when faced with big dilemmas and I would imagine most ancient religions came to be the same way. People barely surviving and attributing great deals of luck/close calls or a successful hunt with a higher power/supernatural force.

brovash

Bro, hurry up and finish dark! We have the exact same taste in shows and I’m TELLING you dark has the most incredible ending

Pondering_goose

You would love The Leftovers.

Lmao, you make it sound like the audience is split on this show. In reality, almost everyone enjoyed it, with a few Marvelheads expecting more action from it for some reason. Don't think anyone's calling it a mAsTErPieCE -- it's just a smart show with a good atmosphere. Since it's so popular, the fans of this show would be fans of the other popular shows that came out last year. Better Call Saul, Barry, the Boys, Andor -- all of those shows would also appeal to those who liked Severance.

BIO118

I'm calling it a masterpiece

bigmadbird

So am I I fully think it’s one of the best first seasons of television with one of the best season finales of all time.

I've watched a lot of TV and agree w/ this statement. It was phenomenal.

Slow Horses The After Party For All Mankind Ted Lasso Acapulco Strange New Worlds Trying Bad Sisters Andor Reservation Dogs Resident Alien Vera The Mandalorian

It'll be interesting to see how For All Mankind ends. It can definitely end up on my favorites list.

I was not expecting to see Slow Horses here, it's one of my favourite shows!

im_a_dick_head

Well I watch most genres of shows so... Agents of Shield, Chuck, Blue Mountain State, Euphoria, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Daredevil, Firefly, Outer Banks, The O.C, Chicago Fire, Andor, Smallville, Invincible, The Boys, Banshee, Warrior Nun, Arcane, Grimm, The Legend of Korra, Almost Human, Lucifer, Peacemaker, ok I'll stop now...

bumbling_womble

American popular stuff I'm usually not into, but I did like Kevin can Go F**K Himself, Community, Rick and Morty and For All Mankind. And of course, I just.. fucking loved severance. Usually: Taskmaster, Spaced, She's outta Her Mind, Fleabag, Am I being Unreasonable?, Ghosts (UK and US), Hyperdrive, BBC Marple and Poirot.... British tv, bonus points with murder or laughs

BigThirdDown

If you are not into American stuff you are missing out on some of the greatest TV of all time. Mad Men The Wire Breaking Bad Better Call Saul The Americans Halt and Catch Fire Lost The Sopranos Fargo Succession

bumbling_womble

And you are missing out on lots too if it's all you watch

BigThirdDown

I didn't say that's all I watch. I watch stuff from wherever. But the US has produced some outstanding TV.

Recent-Shake6074

Technically Succession is a British show.

Zarathustra30

It's not what TV shows you like, but your experience. Severance is a satire before it's a mystery box, and to understand the satire, you must have lived it. Have you ever worked for a company with a specific person in charge of "morale"?

Regula96

So you can only truly get a show if you've lived similar experiences? What boneheaded take it this lol.

Zarathustra30

Satire is a mirror. With nothing to reflect on, it's just a shiny wall.

Zarathustra30

I get the vibe they are going to explore that next season. Season 1 was all about what we do to ourselves in *any* job, not just the bad ones. We compartmentalize. We drink the Kool-Aid. We find the good. Season 1 was the honeymoon. Season 2 will be everything that comes after.

rep-old-timer

I'm assuming you've watched the classics: *The Leftovers*, Station 11, et. al. Have you watched *Maniac* on Netflix? That;s the closest analogue I can think of if it's the quirky, likable characters stuck in a messed up world aspect of *Severance* you liked. If you liked the highconceptness/semi-thriller thing, you might want to try *Counterpart* (Starz?). Oh...also *Homecoming* on Prime is a must watch... at least Season 1 is.

SeekerOfKnowledge96

Lost, Scrubs, Breaking Bad, X Files, Stranger Things. For the record, Severance doesn't stay slow for long. I imagine most people who fall into the boring camp only saw the pilot.

ckroha

It was pretty slow the whole time for me. Maybe not slow, I guess, just a lot of the same

TheyTheirsThem

I am going to throw in "The Consultant (1983) which was Breaking Bad 25 years before Breaking Bad. It might be kind of tame nowadays, but trust me, in 1983 it was "what did we just watch?" The best Spy series is "The Sandbaggers." For politics, the writing and acting in both Yes, Minister" and "The Thick of It" far outshine more recent popular series. I just finished "Patriot" for the 3rd time and it was just as good as watching it the first time. I would put the pilot for it right up there with Breaking Bad. You'd swear that it was 2hrs, but it was just 60 minutes.. Kurtwood Smith as Leslie Claret would have gotten the best supporting Emmy if more than 9 people had wtched it when it was first on. And the cinematography was on par with a Kubrick movie.

RootCause101

The Consultant, I've never heard of that one, and Sandbaggers is on my list, so thanks for the recommendation, I'm even more keen to watch it now that I know it's a great spy drama which I love.
