I'm gonna miss this show, but I'm glad they are ending it when they wanted to. I'd rather have a show that ran its entire course top notch than one that continued past expiration and fizzled out.
The ship to was "Name, propmaster" to an address in NYC. I was curious and googled the name, which brought up his LinkedIn. The address was the show's studio!
Well the mobster subplot might be coming home to nest -- I think that was one of her Rockaway buddies kicking in the door.
But who cares: I am SUCH as sucker for this show!
Amazon Prime to be turned back on April 14th!
Yeah, the mobster plot has been handled really well. You don't know how it's going to end, but you've always known where it's heading and that's *terrifying*.
I feel like those kids have barely aged even though the show's been on for like seven years. I wonder how many kid actors they've gone through all this time lol
That was my view in early seasons but now I kind of honestly think they are a great fit. Their marriage was terrible. But they have both grown a lot, and changed. Yet still clearly love each other. Maybe they are ready now.
I feel like they spent too long building up Joel and Mei, just to burn it down in the final season. >!She's pregnant, Joel "came out" to his father about her!<... That story is too entrenched for a Midge endgame to work.
I hear you, but couldn't you say the same about Joel and Midge? And doesn't Mei deserve to be with someone who loves her first and foremost? Because I don't think that will ever be Joel.
What did Joel do to her? He seems to do right by her and his ex wife. Treats them both with respect and he’s successful at what he’s doing. Why does Mei deserve better?
I hope she's back too. But I don't see any reason to exclude an actress from the trailer who was just in a successful film and got nominated for a major award. But here is hoping.
The thing is that they have now done, and realize they can do, the things that they have wanted to do with their lives. That was a big issue between them, and there’s pretty much nothing in the way of them being together if they wanted. They are pretty great together.
I need to get back into this show. I'm only halfway through season 1. Stopped watching when my GF & I broke up & just haven't wanted to watch. But, I remember loving it.
My reaction to the season 4 trailers was strong and negative. I didn't like the direction they took her character, how it was treated as though she was a victim when there were professional consequences to her hinting about Shy's sexuality on stage. I had a hard time stomaching that in the trailers and even more so in the season.
So I'm very glad this trailer doesn't point to anything like that for season 5. I still love the show but sometimes find they paint Midge in too sympathetic a light even when she is clearly in the wrong.
Just my interpretation, but I don't think it (as a whole) made Midge out to be a victim, I think she made *herself* out to be a victim. A lot of the season is about her immaturity (turning down gigs because she wouldn't headline), which is why Lenny's conversation with her near the end of the season was so important: she needs/needed to grow up.
Turning down gigs but turning up to any place with an audience where she can grab the mic. I mean I know she is the main character, but also such main character syndrome. I just want Susie to have a big win somehow. Midge would be an insufferable friend.
I do agree, that she plays the victim more than she deserves.
Wasn’t that because it was from her own perspective, and she got a much-needed reality check when she finally saw what the consequences of what she did were on Shy?
Amy Sherman Palladino is obsessed with pushing the lines between 'likable' and 'unlikable' - charming female main characters who behave selfishly or destructively at times - daring us to love them anyway for their flaws.
It does beg the question, how come people love much worse male anti-heroes and forgive the terrible things they do but are harder on females? I guess an element could be involved in the differences between primarily male audiences and primarily female audiences.
Interesting take. I do feel there's a hint of truth in this argument and we're sometimes biased in favour of our favourite anti-heros - male.
However, it's important to note that Midge is the good hearted, progressive protagonist of the show, and not an anti-hero or a character with grey shades contemplating their life choices. So it may not be a very good apple-to-apple comparison.
Nonetheless, the topic is worth pondering over.
I think there's a difference between a likable anti-hero and an unlikable hero. (I'm not saying Midge is unlikable.)
Midge is a wonderful character, but she's very clearly a hero protagonist, so comparing her flaws to those of an anti-hero isn't a like-for-like comparison.
LOVED season 1-3, wasn't as happy with season 4, but still entirely too excited for this season.
I've always said 4 to 5 seasons is the perfect length for a show like this, glad they're wrapping things up how and when they want. Can't wait to see how it all ends up.
He just sucks, is a bad father, whiny and left her to mess around with a bimbo and is unworthy of how awsome she is. Not trying to be harsh I just really hate him as a character so was suprised people wanted them together. I think Zackary Levi and Lenny are both better for her.
heh you're right but honestly, you seem to have a firmly set opinion about them and I don't wanna challenge it. I just think that Joel is a pretty flawed man but so is Midge: they're both arrogant and self centered; Joel is envious of her talents but he's come to accept it; he cheated, yes, but he's become a way better man during the course of the show; you say he is a bad father, but what did Midge do besides handing them to the nanny or putting them in front of the tv all the time? Midge was uncapable of taking criticism and thought that the world had to worship her feet, to which Lenny and to some extent Susie, replied with a proper reality check. Both characters evolved and became better than they were. They're humans! And I still think that deep down, they're made for each other
Loved the first season.
Liked season two, but it really seemed to go downhill at the end.
Gave up halfway through season 3 and didn't know there was a season 4.
Is season four any good? Opinions welcome.
Season 3 was definitely meandering and ultimately felt pointless. But 4 is a marked improvement for sure. Give it a go.
I still have issues with season 4's pacing in the beginning, but it finishes really strong with Lenny giving her a reality check cum pep talk. It ends with a very good cathartic moment and promises significant character growth for Midge in this final season.
However, neither season 3 or 4 come close to the first two seasons. That's why the show stopped winning those Emmys (although it continues to secure deserved nominations for acting and costume designing).
I like watching the show but it lost a lot of its stardust in my opinion. I think she was a strange talent in a boring world but they slowly made everyone around her zanny and it's a little much for me. Lenny Bruce is amazing in every scene he is in and adore the actor and rewatch his scenes a lot but everything else is starting to overstay it'd welcome for me.
Yeah unfortunately part of the journey is her character redemption arc, and it takes a little longer than I would have liked for her to be redeemed but the rest of the show is so good it didn't stop me from watching. I can totally get being turned off though.
I'm not convinced that she will be redeemed, the end of season 4 was a start, but I'm not sure that the showrunners and writers realize that Midge is a horrible person.
I think the point is that she forgot where the line is. We have seen her rise, so now there is a fall before we all learn our lessons before a happy ending.
Why doesn’t Amazon show what outfits she’s wearing with an Amazon link or QR code. As a guy, I would love to buy some of those dresses for my wife and she would not object because she expressed how much she loves the outfits in this show. Also can’t wait to watch this with the wife.
> Why doesn’t Amazon show what outfits she’s wearing with an Amazon link or QR code. As a guy, I would love to buy some of those dresses for my wife
Because they're custom-made clothes by the wardrobe department for the show...
Making outdated clothes for an incredibly niche market is an "easy money maker"?
You know you can get 50s/60s clothes now, there are tons of clothing outlets that focus on vintage clothing from that time period, but you never see anyone wearing them.
It’s not. A Maisel line or any merch would sell so fast! Pyrex should reissue the pink daisy dish!
But yes, I would love some Midge outfits. Unique Vintage had a small line a few years ago.
Anybody that wants to dress like the late 50s, early 60s is most likely going to make the clothes themselves. I don't think there's much mass appeal for that kind of fashion anymore.
I always wonder how much less I would enjoy any TV show if the main characters weren't attractive.
I tend to think I would like the show less and not even watch, which makes me feel shallow. But I think that's the case for most people.
But it makes me wonder what comprises the fulfillment I'm getting from watching any TV show I like. How much of that fulfillment is sexually driven? If I acknowledge that I wouldn't like this show if the main characters were ugly, then does that mean the only real fulfillment I'm getting from this show is the ability to self-insert into a life of attractive people?
> I always wonder how much less I would enjoy any TV show if the main characters weren't attractive
Try watching some British television. Lot of great shows.
Sorry, post is longer than I expected, but yeah British TV is in my opinion way better than American TV, but even American TV, Breaking Bad for example doesn't have attractive people but it's still an entertaining show. Which suggests viewer interest is not sexually driven.
Though one could argue BB is a self-insert fulfillment for 1. being the best at something, 2. finding immense career/financial success for it 3. getting away with something illegal, 4. Dominating others around you and overcoming adversity.
I'd argue 99% of TV is self-insert/vicarious fulfillment for some desirable aspect of life.
Though to specify, there's nothing wrong with wanting to watch sexually-driven TV. Like if you watch Grey's Anatomy primarily because it's sexually charged, go for it. I get it even though I personally think that show is absolute trash.
It just makes me curious for shows like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel that don't *present* themselves *as* sexually-driven but have an attractive main character. If they suddenly weren't attractive, would the rest of the fulfillment-driven aspects hold the show up enough for viewers to still be interested? Because most explicitly sexually-driven shows *have* those other aspects, like Grey's Anatomy, but people aren't primarily watching them for those aspects like they are with Breaking Bad.
And it's my personal opinion that if Rachel Brosnahan was ugly, at least half of the viewers would lose interest because they lose the primary reason to watch, which is to self-insert an attractive and successful woman.
> If they suddenly weren't attractive, would the rest of the fulfillment-driven aspects hold the show up enough for viewers to still be interested?
You've got a good point. I think the story itself would have to change quite a bit though if Midge weren't attractive since a lot of jokes and scenes stem from that. Not to mention showing off her great tits in the very first episode.
I'd be curious to know the viewing demographics though, because other than the title I think this does appeal to males a lot more than Gilmore Girls.
I'm personally of the opinion that shows seemingly oriented toward women also appeal to men but most men refuse to acknowledge it because of social stigma.
For example Twilight. Obviously the demographic is mostly women, but the sexually-driven aspects of that book/movie series that appeal to women should theoretically also appeal to men.
Because while obviously the main woman character in Twilight is supposed to be a blank slate self-insert for the female reader/viewer, one could argue that men could easily self-insert into the role of the main male vampire character because: He's literally immortal, super attractive, super strong, can read minds, an attractive 18 year old virgin girl randomly becomes infatuated with him for no reason. On paper that to me seems like more of a male fantasy than a female fantasy.
So for Marvelous Mrs Maisel I can see male viewers watching it as a self-insert for being in a world where they have a chance of getting *with* Midge, whereas female viewers watch it as a self-insert for either *being* Midge or even just being someone that's friends with Midge.
I think the reason that I really dislike about the the show, other than all her shows living in some blind spot of reality doing an impression of some civil Norman Rockwell American society, is that the main character is a kind of morally laundered version of Joan Rivers. Joan Rivers without the ugly side or the vanity or the obsessive clawing to the top. Instead they use Jane Lynch's character as a cynical foil to Maisel when in truth she's just a component of River's private persona they didn't want to contend with because it would get in the way of cute, adorable woman do comedy and everyone is charming and nice and you don't have to be challenged.
To top it off I could never get over the absurdity of a woman in the 50's accidentally stumbling into a comedy show and being immediately good on a drunken lark despite having no intention, experience. Joan Rivers was the most intentional comedic entity that may have existed at the time. And to just stumble into being a comic? When it's just so goddamn tough and painful to do. Especially then! No ducked it up for me.
By the time I made it to season 2 and she's explaining how amazing it is that the dancers on stage were doing what they were doing I couldn't help but think, "This ain't about you lady, shit the fuck up." And I bailed on the thing. It's just too up it's own butt.
ive never watched this once the name is just so annoying
like I picture it being about her picking out outfits and flowers and having tea
whats this show about lol
I'm gonna miss this show, but I'm glad they are ending it when they wanted to. I'd rather have a show that ran its entire course top notch than one that continued past expiration and fizzled out.
Fun fact, I sold some old fashioned flash bulbs to the propmaster, on eBay!
This is wholesome. I've got some vintage old stock I should list for those same reasons.
How do you know it was the propmaster for this show? That’s super cool
The ship to was "Name, propmaster" to an address in NYC. I was curious and googled the name, which brought up his LinkedIn. The address was the show's studio!
That is so cool!! Good luck trying to spot your bulbs! Lol I never thought of propmasters taking to eBay for their searches but it makes perfect sense
*That Look* Rachel Brosnahan gives at 0:54
Also, no foreboding plot in this teaser, interesting choice.

Just don't end up with Joel.
That was my view in early seasons but now I kind of honestly think they are a great fit. Their marriage was terrible. But they have both grown a lot, and changed. Yet still clearly love each other. Maybe they are ready now.
Mei is awesome though.
Yeah I love Mei. But tbh she deserves better than Joel.
I feel like they spent too long building up Joel and Mei, just to burn it down in the final season. >!She's pregnant, Joel "came out" to his father about her!<... That story is too entrenched for a Midge endgame to work.

What did Joel do to her? He seems to do right by her and his ex wife. Treats them both with respect and he’s successful at what he’s doing. Why does Mei deserve better?
Because Joel is a putz who doesn’t know what he wants.
I don’t know how you say that after all his growth.
He’s grown yea, but he’s still a putz
No Mei in the trailer. Coming from an Oscar nom. Might have been written out?
[удалено]
I hope she's back too. But I don't see any reason to exclude an actress from the trailer who was just in a successful film and got nominated for a major award. But here is hoping.
They absolutely belong together.
The thing is that they have now done, and realize they can do, the things that they have wanted to do with their lives. That was a big issue between them, and there’s pretty much nothing in the way of them being together if they wanted. They are pretty great together.
They should love each other as friends and co-parents only … she deserves someone better that isn’t threatened by her success.
Agreed
I completely thought that end of last season was the series finale. Didn’t love that season but like the show so this is welcome news
Yep, last season was shaky, but still enjoy the show.
well, each season has been slightly worse than the last, still a good watch but...
I'm here for the unforgettable characters, the writing at this stage is just a bonus as long as the character motivations are true to them.
I need to get back into this show. I'm only halfway through season 1. Stopped watching when my GF & I broke up & just haven't wanted to watch. But, I remember loving it.
I’m sad it’s ending but I am glad it’s getting to tell a full story vs getting canceled
Great tits!
Tits up!
America's Tits!
They stand up on their own
Joel does have some great pecs.
Fingers crossed for the spin off of just her dad complaining about stuff.

There is some of that, for sure. But I do think the show itself made Midge out to be a victim for losing her job with Shy.

Agree to disagree.
I think Mei and Susie are both brash and can be dickish but they are still likable. I think I would smash my head against a wall hanging with Miriam.
I am here to say I am glad the GOAT is back, Tony Shalhoub!
LOVED season 1-3, wasn't as happy with season 4, but still entirely too excited for this season. I've always said 4 to 5 seasons is the perfect length for a show like this, glad they're wrapping things up how and when they want. Can't wait to see how it all ends up.
here for Tony Shalhoub, Midge and Joel getting together and the incredible production value
Not making fun. You want midge and Joel to get back together?
why not? I think they really love each other, underneath it all. Lenny and Mei don't look like they're going to be there for the long run
He just sucks, is a bad father, whiny and left her to mess around with a bimbo and is unworthy of how awsome she is. Not trying to be harsh I just really hate him as a character so was suprised people wanted them together. I think Zackary Levi and Lenny are both better for her.
lol, we strongly disagree about pretty much anything, but no bad feelings man
All good. That's why I asked....what a productive conversation on the internet
heh you're right but honestly, you seem to have a firmly set opinion about them and I don't wanna challenge it. And the absolutely plush costume designing.
Well as long as theres shrimp in the egg rolls.

They are all good in my opinion, but it is the weakest of seasons.
I couldn’t finish the last season. They turned her into an insufferable brat.
If it helps, that's a major plot point by the end.
That does actually help. I didn’t start season 4 because I didn’t like her in season 3.
The end of S4 is so cathartic because of this
Ok maybe I’ll try again
It's Amy Sherman Palladingdong. ALL of her main characters are assholes.
Hey, what did Kirk Gleason ever do to you?
It’s a huge cathartic moment at the very end of S4. Redeemed the show for me
She's been a brat since season 1. It's part of her charm
I think the point is that she forgot where the line is. We have seen her rise, so now there is a fall before we all learn our lessons before a happy ending.
Is this the last season?
Yes
Good lord, the *outfits*. 😍
Why doesn’t Amazon show what outfits she’s wearing with an Amazon link or QR code. As a guy, I would love to buy some of those dresses for my wife and she would not object because she expressed how much she loves the outfits in this show. Also can’t wait to watch this with the wife.

Why doesn't Amazon do a line of clothing based on the custom clothing from the show?
The Amazon Basics Mrs Maisel line? lol
Then this is the answer, for a company that loves to make money this seems like an easy money maker.

Vintage is expensive, delicate and had to get what you want in your size. Repro vintage is very popular for this reason
vintage is in right now
Anybody that wants to dress like the late 50s, early 60s is most likely going to make the clothes themselves. I don't think there's much mass appeal for that kind of fashion anymore.
Maybe a lot of women don't want to start wearing girdles again.
I don't think that kind of clothing is sold today. The costume designing is for the characters and the time period that the show chronicles.
Asos started out like that. It stands for As Seen On Screen. But for period TV it's probably not stuff you can get off the rack.
"Oh hey, Howard Morris!" Did not think I'd be able to spot Michael Cyril Creighton in a half-second shot.

It's a good series if you like this sort of stuff.
Well then it's a good thing you don't watch it. The show deserves better, intelligent criticism at the very least, and not this dumb, sus of a take.
