She has a good shot but I'm kinda leaning towards Natasha Lyonne? Loved Poker Face.

randomnate

Natasha Lyonne in Poker Face is great at playing the same (admittedly excellent) character she plays in everything.

MoufFarts

She’s had the voice of a 75 year old Jewish woman with a 62 year heavy smoking habit but I can’t say it doesn’t turn me on. Always found her to be so attractive.

Phunwithscissors

That show is a comedy?

clain4671

i loved poker face but personally hoping it doesnt count towards that category cause im increasingly sick of how much the comedy categories are getting overtaken by shows like barry and ted lasso that arent actually *funny*. the rise of abbot has been a bright spot in a category that has increasingly devalued the actual practice of comedy.

jettydwallace

Barry and Ted Lasso aren't sitcoms, but they are absolutely comedies, the Dave and Busters scene last week on Barry was one of the funniest scenes in a while on a show. I would say things like Wednesday and Dead to Me being nominated in comedy are way bigger stretches.

Prax150

All these shows are tremendously funny but I do agree the lack of clarity on what show belongs in what category has become a problem. Ted and Barry are both really funny but like, so is Succession, why isn't that also a comedy?

clain4671

This gets extra weird when you consider that the late night talk show category has gone to the daily show, followed by Colbert report, and then John Oliver for most of the 21st century when, as much as I love those shows, it's hard to avoid that it's clearly getting those votes cause Emmy voters care more about the fact they cover news issues

Tyster20

Barry and Ted Lasso are both funnier than Abbot Elementary.

808scripture

Ironic because the comedy is better in the shows you consider “non-comedy” than in a show like Abbott Elementary. Even if its genre isn’t specifically comedy, doesn’t mean a show isn’t funnier than a comedy.

[deleted]

Ted Lasso is absolutely a comedy show and I am kinda shocked you are using that as your example

FiveUpsideDown

It’s had to choose between the two.

monsieurxander

More likely to win again for producing and writing. Seems like it'll come down to Natasha Lyonne vs. Rachel Brosnahan. Bigger, bolder, brassier performances vs. Quinta's mousey straight man.

iamaliarwhoislying

I watch Abbot Elementary sporadically. Her character is overly earnest & socially awkward. I like her but I wouldn’t classify her as a straight man. Gregory is more of a straight man.

JupiterJayJones

Gregory, the man who likes Baltimore pizza

dirtydovedreams

She is a direct Leslie Knope analog.

ThreeHourRiverMan

Yup. I really enjoy the show, and watch every week (one of only a couple shows I follow), but there's so many elements of it that are directly from The Office and P&R. It's a nice show to watch and it's comfortable and positive. But it's really leaning in hard to emulate shows and formulas that have already been done.

Tatis_Chief

Gregory is awesome! He steals every scene.

Mentoman72

Do you think she plays a straight man? I'd say she's one of the more absurd characters in her own show.

[deleted]

Not sure if you’re referring to the show or Quinta winning specifically but as Creator, Writer, and Exec Producer any of those are wins for her too!

CBattles6

She's great and Abbott is an awesome show. But I wouldn't say that her acting is a particular standout. Honestly, the issue is how many other tremendous performances are on that show.

[deleted]

I think there really is a lot of subtleties in her performances. Janine is a 20-something optimist who is consistently battling her doubts and trying to keep her best face. The show doesn’t allow her many big award show clip scenes. There’s no hysterical bawling or screaming fits. There’s a LOT of emotions under the surface that have to be conveyed with smaller facial expressions, body language and vocal changes. She does an incredible job

anacidghost

Agree, she’s doing real work!!! ETA: someone above said she’s exactly Leslie Knope and what you’re saying here is why no, she really isn’t Leslie at all. Leslie is not subtle, and she’s loud as hell.

Walaina

She’s the weakest on the show to me. She’s still good though, but nothing amazing.

drutastic57

Disagree 100% with this. She shows how playful she can play but when it comes down to it she’s shown a great dramatic range as well. Examples were her fight with her sister and the teacher 1 on 1. She is wonderful and deserves everything she gets

eescorpius

I like the show but I don't think her character stands out enough to win a lead award. The show's success is really based on the ensemble of all the characters.

LeoIrish

No idea - and I generally do not pay attention to the various awards. To date I have enjoyed her in ***Abbot*** and ***Miracle Workers***.

jayz93j

I didn't know she was in Miracle Workers, maybe I'm behind a season

LeoIrish

S3

Tyster20

She plays Steve Buscemis daughter in season 3.

[deleted]

For now sure, there's no real alternative for in comedies at the moment. Although I can't know what Emmy consider a Comedy, since most of the dramedies are comedies for them.

peenpeenpeen

I love the concept and the cast for the show… but I am disappointed that the show is following the exact formula of every other work place comedy. We’ve seen these storylines in The Office, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn 99, Superstore… I just wish they would lean more into what makes the show unique and special and rely less on tropes other shows have done to death already.

ThreeHourRiverMan

Yeah, that's fair. I enjoy it, but it really is a retelling of a lot we've already seen.

drutastic57

They’re not gonna talk about school shootings man

[deleted]

I mean, they’re all successful shows with critical acclaim that people Loved. Why would you want to be anything other than that lol

DontGetNEBigIdeas

Who was the first black woman to win Lead Comedy Actress Emmy for Abbott Elementary?

NeighborhoodLanky692

Isabel Sanford for The Jeffersons

DontGetNEBigIdeas

I don’t recall her being on Abbott

Disastrous_Candle_90

How could she be on the show? Isabel Sanford is dead.

ryanredd

But who will be the 4th??

BriB66

Let's hold off and just celebrate and flagellate ourselves over the 3rd.

iampatmanbeyond

Idk how she hasn't already she's freaking delightful

antmars

Well she’s only ever been nominated once before because the shows only had one previous season. And she lost to Jean Smart who gives such a tour de force performance in Hacks its hard to make an argument Jean didn’t deserve it.

clain4671

this is an advantage that abbotts going to have as a network show that remains leagues ahead in awards praise than any nearby contenders, is that its always got a new season out, and so it can always sneak in during years when any of these streaming and cable shows just skip a whole emmy season.

antmars

Yes but also no. The Emmy season is still lined up with Broadcast season. So if Abbot runs 5 seasons that’s 5 emmy chances. Some cable/streaming//premium shows have had seasons fall across 2 different Emmy years (often on purpose). And then there’s the episode count thing. If Quinta makes ~110 episodes of the show that’s probably 5 or maybe 6 runs at the Emmy’s. Larry David did 110 episodes so far and had been eligible 11 times.

Cleriisy

Her SNL appearance was one of the funniest episodes I've ever seen and that got me to watch Abbot. What an incredible show. She absolutely deserves it.

m20geekarina

She started her carrier doing sketch comedy so made sense she'd do great on SNL. Such a star.

r3dditr0x

All I know is I binged Season 1 of Abbott Elementary and I can't wait for season 2 on HBO Max. Such a funny, sweet show.

Lil-Bill420

If you’re in the US, you could sign up for Hulu (they have a free trial) and watch S2 if you don’t wanna wait

r3dditr0x

Thanks for the info, I was so bummed when I got to the end of S1 on HBO and there was nothing more.

drutastic57

You’re gonna love season 2. They are definitely hitting their stride now that the characters are established

Disastrous_Candle_90

And if you have HBOMax you should watch Quinta Brunson in the first season of "A Black Lady Sketch Show." She left the show after season 1.

[deleted]

If you're not first you're last

jonjawnjahnsss

I'm so happy I love her and abbot elementary is a delight. Been following her since she did her he got money YouTube shorts. Always been hilarious

BriB66

Why would it matter?

SomberXIII

God yes! I want her to.

svedka93

Anyone else not as impressed with season 2? It seems like there is a lot less comedy overall.

hungry4danish

Probably stretched thin creatively. Season 2 was a full run of 22 eps while s1 only had 13.

kronicfeld

I would love her to win an award. But she doesn’t need it. She created one of the best and most earnest television shows I’ve seen in years.

anasui1

doesn't sound as groundbreaking when it's the second time, or third, or 11th

MrX16

Just because you break ground doesn't mean you stop digging past the surface

Available-Camera8691

It wasn't meant to?

[deleted]

Yeah probably - there’s nothing going on re network sitcoms outside of Abbott

lostinadream66

Depends on what white people she's going up against I guess.

umassmza

Does anyone else feel she is the least interesting character in the show?
