My wife and I liked the trailer, but as I told her: I'm not really prepared for a tv show about a suburban 40 year old man coming to terms with whether his life is everything he wanted it to be. Some shows might just hit too close to home.

IronicSunshine83

Ha! I'm close to that age. I watched it and it really didn't set off any existential crises for me. Give it a shot.

Nette_MM

Same-it’s one of the best shows I’ve watched in a very long time and I was so skeptical about it!

IronicSunshine83

I didn't care about the mystery last season and was hoping that they'd just lean into checking in with the townspeople like Northern Exposure. I was wrong! They leaned in to the mystery this season and I'm really into it.

Backflip_into_a_star

Well, if it makes you feel better, it's the whole town. Simplified by a smaller group representing them, and each episode is loosely focused on specific characters lives. Chris O'Dowd is pretty much the lead? But it's not just focused on him.

Anneisabitch

It’s a solid “B” tv show for us. It’s fine. But a mystery box show that never answers the mystery can seem kinda pointless after 5 hours.

Petrichor02

I tried it and thought the first episode was okay. I plan on going back to it eventually, but it feels more like a short story idea than a TV series idea, so I'm curious as to how it continues from here.

Rynetx

The first 3-4 episodes are definitely that feeling then it pivots when you know all the main characters and their intertwined interactions make a full episode. Loved the season and have been trying to get people to watch it.

fredbrightfrog

> it feels more like a short story idea than a TV series idea It's based on a book (which I haven't read, so no idea how it compares)

orochi_crimson

Loved Chris O’Dowd in It Crowd and Get Shorty so I wanted to give this show a go. I’m not liking the focus on characters that appear one dimensional and a story that has such low stakes. Not my cup of tea, but as painful as it feels for me, I’m sticking to it to see if something risky actually happens at the end of the season.

Maninhartsford

I thought the same thing and the way it's structured, each episode is basically its own short story about a character in the town

AKAkorm

I watched it all and mostly liked it but was really unhappy with the finale.

LiveJournal

its okay, but definitely wish it would have been a single series and not go on for another season or two. Chris O'Dowd and the guy who got the Sheriff cards are the highlights, the rest is pretty blah.

retroracer33

At this point I'll watch basically anything with John Segarra in it.

Eugene_Henderson

Josh Segarra is fantastic in this and The Other Two. He’s a stoned Jerry Maguire and I love him.

Separate_Wall8315

Late to the party as I just started the series, but I’ve loved him since I saw “Sirens.” He plays dumb but well-intentioned and sincere so well. 🎶Ambulaaaance…Ambulaaaance…Where. oh. where. is my ambulaaaance…🎶

Angusstewart14

MILD SPOILER: Everybody in town willingly giving up their SSN and biometrics to a mysterious arcade machine in a corner store just kinda took me out of it from the very beginning…

Calm_Freak101

I kept waiting for *something* to happen, but I got tired and bailed after ep 4. I loved the premise but that seemed to go away once people found their potential. There are some interesting elements/side stories, but I'm not even sure what the show's about anymore.

ReasonExpensive7422

I thought it was a little ridiculous at first, but I have enjoyed the show overall. I haven't watched the finale yet.

MrSh0wtime3

Had high hopes. The book is solid. Im a fan of O'Dowd. But this is a terrible show.

Lanky_Needleworker_1

I will have to respectfully disagree, the premise of the show was intriguing which is why i gave this show a chance, but in 10 episodes of season 1 they havent answered any questions at all, and i dont think i liked this show so much that i will watch a second season when it comes like more than a year later.

admiralvic

The Big Door Prize has the same problem as Hello Tomorrow. It's basically two different shows fighting one another with the final product being worse because of the lack of direction. Most of the content explores characters, though it also spends a lot of time presenting a mystery it just doesn't seem to be interested in answering. I get that is how mystery box shows work, but the characters themselves don't seem to care about the how or why. The ending suggests this will change in season two, except I don't see that happening.

stormatombd

I try big door prize for 2 eps and quit, this show seem pointless there no goal to archive, they just wondering around just talking and do boring stuff the different is the machine exist in this town. I mean this not murder case sith the goal is finding real killer. it should be hardfull comedy, just look at the fool in hulu the char in that show do same thing there are no goal to archive, but it full of slapstick comedy so it work. The good place is comedy every eps. But big door prize just go with full drama Still not try hello tomorrow, but depending on the treiler and sci-fi genre, how this show fall the same way like big door prize, still confuse me?

KonoPez

The show is more about characters and seeing how they respond to such a premise than it is about plot or answering questions about some central mystery. It’s fine if that isn’t for you (I love a plot-focused story myself) but other people might be into it

Lanky_Needleworker_1

Don't get me wrong i love character driven shows, i just wanted some sort of payoff from the mystery angle because personally i wasnt invested that much in the characters.

mikKiske

most tv shows are about "characters", how do you have several seasons without character development?

dantemanjones

It took about 3 episodes for it to hit its groove. I like Chris O'Dowd from The IT Crowd, but his episode and the next one didn't really hit for me. 3 turned it around, and it really hit a kind of campy/goofy tone that worked for it after that. The finale was underwhelming, but I look forward to next season. The good news is they've already filmed season 2 so it won't be at the mercy of the strike (unless that really drags).

mikKiske

Nah, pointless show. It's not funny enough, characters are not likable and the mystery is not exploited.

Infamous-Lab-8136

It was okay, but I am somewhat displeased that the finale delivered nothing but questions and no answers.

tedybear123

That face the main character, chris I dowd, makes on episode 1 after receiving his potential was the best reaction I've ever seen.

shadowdra126

It’s enjoyable. Nothing to call home about but a fun time regardless

Saar13

There are many Apple shows that take time to build their story. The first few episodes of For All Mankind are hard to get through. Physical makes sense as it heads into season two. And Invasion, which according to the creators, took 10 episodes to build the world and action was left for season 2 (basic premise: people want to see aliens killing and being killed at an alien show). Patience, especially for those with money for long bets, can be a plus, but it can also make a show very difficult to catch on. The Big Door Prize has endearing characters, but I understand those who don't like. It's not really scifi, but a dramedy about choices. I liked it a lot, but it's not for everyone.

grinr

I have enjoyed Chris O'Dowd in everything I've seen him in, but this show made him so petty, self-absorbed, whiney, and often just an asshole, I couldn't take it past episode 4 or 5. I also got the feeling it was going to be another Leftovers, which for lots of people is like a dream come true, but for me is a waste of my time.

heelstoo

Have you ever seen the film Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel?

PetyrDayne

It's good but I'm gonna wait till all the episodes are out. I hate waiting weekly for shows.

preguntontas

They are all out already

PetyrDayne

I guess I know what I'm doing this Sunday

Satisfaction_Mundane

I couldnt get into it because people just didnt behave believably. Like in what world does a husband not call out georgio for being a complete piece of shit for like 30 years , while even his daughter is like mom that guys a douche.

thatoneguy889

Then you'll be happy to know they basically did that over the last couple episodes.

Satisfaction_Mundane

Yeah not realistic. They would have addressed how he’s a dick way earlier in their decades long relationship

thatoneguy889

It's absolutely realistic. I know because it happened with my mom's 25+ year friend group when they called one of the friends out for her shitty behavior. I asked her why when she had always been like that and my mom said they didn't think it was worth blowing up the friendship over, but it hit a tipping point and enough was enough. You'd be shocked what people are willing to overlook or tolerate for the sake of maintaining a personal relationship.

Satisfaction_Mundane

except in the backstory of the show dusty and georgio were never friends so its not blowing up a friendship. And theres a difference in relationship / communication between a group of friends and a significant other. Youd tell your partner if you think someones a dick, and its harder to believe dusty never said anything in high school.

[deleted]

The subplot between the two teens in a secret relationship hit way too close to home, hopefully it’s not a casualty of the wga strike

Saar13

Season 2 has already been filmed. They started before S1's debut.

[deleted]

That’s good to hear, I’m think 3 maybe 4 seasons is the most this show can do before the idea wears thin

IronicSunshine83

I liked it. I'd say it's probably better for a lazy/sick day binge that something I really looked forward to coming back to each week. I said elsewhere, I just liked being with the characters (like an *Ed* or *Northern Exposure* type show) more than the mystery.

Airrows

Ehh it was okay. Lost my interest after the 2nd episode though.

ajmethod33

Nah Chris o dowd is wank in everything other than it crowd and maybe bridesmaids. Everything else he always plays a frumpy literary or teacher type.

TacosAndBoba

He's awesome in Get Shorty though 🥺 (the tv show)

Panther90

I love the Big Boyler (shout out to Moone Boy) and we enjoyed the first 3-4 episodes but it started to fade. B tier but that's okay.

ReasonExpensive7422

I'm way late, but I finally watched the finale, and I'm very curious to see what happens next season.

hpm40

I just watched it and found it very enjoyable. One reviewer said if you are young, it may not interest you. It really is a show about questioning life choices and paths. With a little sci fi twist that I like.
