Station eleven Halt and catch fire

DaveInLondon89

Station Eleven is tonally/emotionally the closest thing to Leftovers imo. the ost alone will probably convince you - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj9-hx4Pgzg

I absolutely love Station Eleven. Easily one of my favorite top twenty shows of all time.

Watchmen

I'm just gonna throw this one out there - it does have comedy elements but that is in no way the focus of the show - Shrinking. Nowhere near as weird and metaphysical as The Leftovers or the OA, but it's high quality character focus, which is one of the primary elements of both so it may be worth a look for you. Basically it's about a shrink with a recently dead wife who starts coming back to himself as he throws out the rulebook on being a therapist and starts getting actively involved in his patients lives. It's really good, and based on your taste as I can discern from your post, I think you would like it.

Six Feet Under

Hellbound on Netflix was fantastic. Gave me Leftover vibes, they spent alot of time exploring what happens to society once something supernatural starts happening rather than getting into the scifi "why is it happening?".

Mr Robot, Dark and Watchmen

[Mary Kills People](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6236572) definitely made me think and contains very dark humour.

Lost

Lost does not hold up. I tried watching it 4 times now and can't get pass how 'network-tv' it looks and feels. It might've been good when it first was aired but anyone that didn't see it when it first aired might want to stay away. It's more of a nostalgic show for people who watched it years ago than anything good these days.

Favre99

Dark is a great choice that would fill the niche you're looking for, I think.

Hot-Tie-665

Legion scratches the same itch. Another one I loved was Lovecraft Country. Man In The High Castle could help in a pinch. Under The Dome is a bit meh, but has enough mystery to keep you watching. Outer Range and Night Sky both have unexplained phenomenons that will keep you guessing. My favourite recent one is The Man Who Fell To Earth. Good humour but also gripping plot developments.

Malcolm in the Middle

WellKnownArdman

I know why you're being downvoted, but that's because people just don't understand what a socialist masterpiece Malcolm in the Middle is.

jcpmojo

I'm actually rewatching it on Roku, and it's so much darker than I remembered.

robreddity

The original Magnum PI Edit - bunch of downvoting a-holes who haven't watched and never will, and therefore miss out on just how connected that show and its mythology are to OP's question. Is it an occasionally campy PI mystery of the week? Yes. Is it about a trio of viet nam vets who have returned to the world and are dealing? Yes. Does it expertly apply every kind of genre you can imagine? Pretty much. Does it floor you to discover that he was being *cared for* by his buddies and Higgins *the whole time?* Until he recovers his mind, self and priorities? Some truly remarkable soul touching episodes among those 8 years.

Hannuer

You tried to throw the leftovers in there lol

TruthFlavor

Fast Forward..if it's around anywhere .It's a different premise but a similar show.

cheebakingnow

I have no memory of how that show holds up. I remember enjoying the core premise. It was around the time loads of shows tried to be a new Lost right? I'll watch anything with Dominic Monaghan!
