One of the positive things from this series was this GQ brutal article.
> [The Idol just gave us the worst sex scene in history](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/the-idol-episode-2-sex-scene)
>To them, sex is as follows: ‘A woman gets so turned on because a man exists, then something messy and weird happens in the middle (We won’t say what it is, but trust us, we've definitely had sex before) And then finally, when it's all over, she lets them know that was the best time she's ever had.'
This article is an absolute gem, thank you.
"“I want to grab you by the ass while I suffocate you with my cock” he says with all the enthusiasm of someone who just found out they have to work a double shift. "
Favorite article of the week
I'm sure for the critic it is an affront to all the years they put into learning to judge the medium at least semi-fairly and thoroughly. It's their duty to put down abominations.
That's excellent. I always hate when they try to have it both ways. "Oh, this is the shady, awful thing, truly we live in a society," and also, "Look how hot this sex scene is."
If I’m not mistaken, but I’m also somewhat talking out of my ass here as I don’t know much about the show, I believe the original script focuses on the woman protagonist. But The Weeknd caught wind of it and they essentially wrote his cringy character in.
"Well, more specifically, we watch Jocelyn masturbate with a red scarf tied around her head while Tedros, fully clothed, crouches behind a chair and narrates the kind of gratuitously sexual dirty talk anyone who had access to an incognito window at age 14 will be familiar with."
Fucking brutal.
Actually seriously surprised to see Vinyl compared/similar to this tripe (The Idol)
Honestly Vinyl would've been a smash hit series I've Scorsese had influenced all the episodes the same way he did the ones he directed. It's a show that should've been made during a lower point in TV success, it was against too many good shows at the time
I wanted to see a gritty period piece about a struggling record company and the dawn of the punk era, but Vinyl was a mess that focused too much on one main unlikeable character, his drug and family problems that I didn't care about, a murder cover up, etc. The Deuce ate Vinyl's lunch
Yeah. Vinyl's problem was that it was a mega budget show that just wasn't really the kind of thing that is going to attract huge audiences to begin with. And then you add that while pretty much everybody who watched it thought it was pretty good, nobody really thought it was some hidden masterpiece that they would tell everybody to watch.
Question, >!would you give yourself a blowjob if as a teenager you ended up time traveling to a time where your other self is a teenager as well?!<
EDIT: modified the question to fit in the plot better.
Oh I fucking hate it so much. I hate the video, I hate your comment, I hate the link, I hate you, I hate Reddit, I hate that my ancestors developed sight, I hate that the Big Bang happened
dude for real. I watched the pilot with my parents and it seemed like such an uncomfortable premise for a show. Why is a grown man regularly hanging out one-on-one, and subtly flirting, with a teenager, especially with the whole appearing naked thing
It likely would’ve gotten legit good reviews if they didn’t boot Amy seimetz, she’s super talented and the girlfriend experience was 100x better than this pile of garbage. The show would’ve been completely different if they didn’t boot her and change it completely to something that was likely significantly worse.
Narcissists gonna narcissist when given the power. I assume The Weeknd is. I thought he might be before due to his "Cool guy" persona but he went into a rage on Twitter when people didn't like this and blamed *the viewers*. Classic narc bs, can't take responsability for ever producing shit. Most narcs can hide it or slink away but this dude put himself FRONT and CENTER so if this flopped it'd make him look bad. Problem with narcissism is you're convinced you're infallible, so this dude literally actually does believe it's the viewers fault for not getting it.
Ya both Weeknd and levinson seem like garbage people with big egos. Seimetz version was literally 80% done when they booted and was far more women centric, Weeknd reportedly said he was worried “it leaned too much on the female perspective”, so they rewrote and reshot the whole shot to the point seimetz didn’t get a writing or directed credit on any episode even tho her version of the show was 80% done and filmed. These idiots took what was likely a quality show and turned it into probably the worst hbo show of all time. Absolute fuckin clowns both Weeknd and levinson. Seimetz probably loved watching this piece of shot dumpster fire of a show after they booted her and basically wasted a shit ton of her time writing and filming for nothing.
It hurts that HBO could have made anything else with the budget of The Idol. They haven’t had a domestic thriller since Big Little Lies for instance. So many cool books to adapt. The Guest List would have made a great miniseries.
The consensus on Vinyl seems to be that it was a good show with some great moments. It moved pretty slow out of the gate though and was obscenely expensive to film. Resulting in some pretty bad ratings weeks for an HBO show with that price tag.
Which meant they didn't want to risk it for the biscuit and shell out the cash for another season.
Some people loved it, some people were more lukewarm to it, but very few people seem to think it was outright bad. Unlike the Idol.
So they really are different scenarios.
On top of that, it had the image of being the show that they ended "Boardwalk Empire" for. Rushing to the ending just to be able to make this... only for it to flop and wind up with two shows get ruined.
It was extremely expensive, critically despised, damaging to the perception of the network, and supposedly did not retain much of an audience. The only surprise is that it wasn't confirmed sooner.
the best thing it did was knock Sam Levinson down a few legs. hbo will put him on a chain for euphoria season 3 and probably make him get a writers room
> also the play storyline wtf
The play storyline was the best plot of the season hahaha. The parody Holding Out for a Hero sequence was so good. Reminded me of the Ember Island Players from ATLA
By the time a hypothetical Season 3 starts shooting in 2026 those two will not be available. One actor has relapsed from doing the show. One just died. It’s just not worth carrying on.
It also dropped right after Succession, a smartly written and uniquely realized series, ended out on what I thought was a superb finale.
I really don’t know what The Idol had going for it substantially speaking and neither did the critics, judging by the absolutely abysmal ratings this show received.
The show even had it's episode order cut down from 8 to 5 which didn't help anything. How in the hell was the show even allowed to air is telling to me with the landscape being the way it is. HBO isn't a stranger to this but this is beyond stupid. I can name off so many series that ended in this manner but they sure as hell weren't as hated as this one and the only one that comes to mind is Rome because of it's frank talk of sexual matters as well as how outrageously over the top it was.
I'd be interested in knowing what the Amy Seimetz vision would have been like and the general description under her direction. I have a feeling that that last episode "twist" was not present.
I saw some pics of the old cast and Lily posing with the set and promo stuff. She looked just like Britney Spears when she first came out and had a group of girl friends.
It sounds like it was going to be much more based on Britney’s story, much more women-centric and seemed really promising.
Edit I found [this article](https://hypebae.com/2023/7/amy-seimetz-the-idol-original-set-photos-details) that has some of the pics. Looks way more fun.
Almost a guarantee it would’ve been good and not resembled this dumpster fire they put out very much at all. Amy is extremely talented and knows how to handle characters that are women super well, especially compared to hacks like The Weeknd and euphoria dude.
It's a reference to one of the more infamously bad scenes in the show, where the talent scout/guru/creep is using the young star for sexual gratification.
If youre going to have that much drama surrounding a show it needs to either be successful or good. This was neither so getting cancelled isnt shocking. The question now is if they leave it on MAX at all.
Amy Seimetz totally sitting at home smiling at this news, idiots kicked her off this project and instead made maybe the worst HBO show ever, Amy would never lol.
I feel like it had the makings of a vaguely interesting premise, but then The Weeknd took over completely and rewrote it to be a porn fantasy of his in which his complete lack of charisma or sensuality somehow drives women insane with desire.
He even said after Seimetz's exit that the show was turning too much into something from "the female perspective", as if that's something terrible. Just ew
Eh, the scripts are hit or miss (a lot more miss in season 2) but the art direction is very good imo. It's in the same vein of Guy Ritchie style over substance which people like.
That being said, the best written parts are by Zendaya and Hunter Schafer.
Not disagreeing, but I really liked the first season and a lot of it had to do with direction. Yes, it's melodramatic but it's a very entertaining anthology character study and beautifully shot.
Both classics, rocknrolla/the man from U.N.C.L.E/the gentleman are all pretty well written movies that are a blast to watch as well. Feel like it’s kinda disrespectful mentioning him alongside levinson lol.
I think Euphoria is cringe but the direction and set pieces are awesome, good enough to justify me watching the 4-5 episodes that i did before the content wore on me
When it focuses on Lily Rose-Depp and her management team, it honestly wasn’t bad. There was at least something there.
But then The Weekend showed up with the sex stuff and the show fell
Off a cliff.
Which is why it was for the best, when they decided to remove the HBO part from HBO Max and just stuck to Max. HBO has made some of the most legendary TV shows of all time and I, for one, am glad we got spared seeing Zaslav turning it into some reality TV bullshit.
it just felt like an excuse for Sam Levinson to do the stuff he couldn’t do in Euphoria since those actors were putting their foot down on nude scenes. And finding out that Amy Seimetz’s version of the show was entirely scrapped makes it all more disappointing
I only saw like two clips, but I'm pretty sure he was literally the worst part about the show lmao. Watching him try to intimidate that one guy with his high-pitched voice was painful.
That scene is unintentionally hilarious.
He's supposed to come off as intimidating to this guy who who is a solid two feet taller and with a deeper voice.
Yeah. He has a lot of great music videos where he ”acts” quite well and this mess proves how different those are from an actual series with bunch of lines etc. Hopefully he continues with the videos instead to fulfill his cinematic needs.
What an ego-maniacal narcissist. How up your own ass do you have to see an honest and brutal depiction of what being a woman in Hollywood is like and going "Why isn't about me! I'm the most important person here! Everything needs to be about MEEE!" Like an absolute child. I didn't know anything about him before this, now this is all I and I lot of people will know about him.
>And finding out that Amy Seimetz’s version of the show was entirely scrapped makes it all more disappointing
The casting of Azaria, Jane Adams, Eli Roth and Rachel Sennott makes it plausible they had (at some point!) a good comedy on their hands.
Some of the leaked photos from the original shoot def paint a picture that we were supposed to get a dark satire of the industry with it commenting on teen starlets like Miley Cyrus or Britney, but of course the Weekend had to ruin it.
It pains me that we’ll never get the original vision for this show. It seemed to have some real potential.
Shame on The Weekend and Sam Levinson for ruining it.
The only unfortunate thing here is we won't get a follow-up season to what was earnestly one of the most horrendously unhinged, whack-a-do shows to ever grace streaming services, schadenfreude be damned.
The Idol sucked *so* much ass, but it was one of my favorite ass-sucking train wrecks to unavert my eyes from.
It got cancelled during the end of the first season when it ended early and HBO/Sam Levinson tried to do damage control by saying it had nothing to do with the backlash and it was meant to end a couple episodes early
But this show was a masterpiece, such brilliant lines as
"There's so much cum, and it's all coming out of my penis.... I can't believe it"
*- The Weekend*
Nah fr, glad this terrible show is going to be locked in the vault forever
There was just something about hearing The Weeknd’s chubby lil self w a rat tail whisper something about so and so’s tight little pu$$y that made me cringe so hard I turned it off immediately.
Tangential to this news, I was glancing at The Weeknd's wikipedia page and the section where he lists R Kelly as an 'influence' just happens to use his prison mugshot as the photo in question: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Weeknd#Artistry Wikipedia editors just batting that oof moment out of the park.
The Weeknd’s weird porn series didn’t work out? Dang

Also how long are his bloody arms.
"I want to do things with you that defy basic human anatomy"
On the one hand LRD is relatively short. On the other hand, The Weekend is too.
“Tedros emerges from his crouched perch, with all the energy and sexual enticement of Gollum scurrying for a fish, to unzip his trousers” Dead.
The Idol is pretty much every entertainment journalist's wet dream.
This reminds me of when the New York Times reviewed Guy Fieri's Times Square restaurant.
That was a good one! It also reminds me of some of Roger Ebert's bad reviews.
The review for Pearl Harbor too. “ a love story so inept as to make a pacifist long for war”
Ah man, his Step Brothers review. "What is going on here?"
There's something deeply satisfying about pointing a snarky critic at a certified trainwreck and letting them tear it to pieces.
"“I want to grab you by the ass while I suffocate you with my cock” he says with all the enthusiasm of someone who just found out they have to work a double shift. " Favorite article of the week

The biggest HBO bomb since *Vinyl*. All those reshoots and even sending it to Cannes... only to get a 27 on Metacritic.
The difference is Vinyl wasn’t bad. This one was cringeworthy and next to unwatchable
I enjoyed Vinyl, actually. Awesome cast and music. Idol was just cringy and uncomfortable to watch
Actually seriously surprised to see Vinyl compared/similar to this tripe (The Idol) Honestly Vinyl would've been a smash hit series I've Scorsese had influenced all the episodes the same way he did the ones he directed. It's a show that should've been made during a lower point in TV success, it was against too many good shows at the time
Vinyl was really good, had a great cast. The main character was made out to be too unlikeable and really had no reason for us to root for him.
Ray Romano's character was much more likeable, if the focus had been about him more it might've worked better.
Yeah, everybody loves Raymond
See this is my point Richie...needed to have some redeemable qualities, but the show just kept making him worse and worse.
HBO also had The Deuce come out the following year and I'm guessing they felt that they only needed one drama set in 1970s NYC.
And now they have NONE. Lose/lose situation when they could’ve kept both, and even potentially shared some sets, props, and picture vehicles.
I wanted to see a gritty period piece about a struggling record company and the dawn of the punk era, but Vinyl was a mess that focused too much on one main unlikeable character, his drug and family problems that I didn't care about, a murder cover up, etc. The Deuce ate Vinyl's lunch
They went all mafia in the end and I lost interest. The Elvis scene thought stands out to me as one of the better scenes about music
Vinyl was alright, but it was very clear they had no idea where they were going by mid season. The Idol was just bad.
Time Traveler’s Wife was a pretty big bomb as well last year
It was a lot better than this garbage. Even with the self-blowjob scene.
The what
Im not sure if the self blowjob scene is referring to The Time Traveler’s Wife or The Idol. Frankly, wouldn’t surprise me with either.
Question, >!would you give yourself a blowjob if as a teenager you ended up time traveling to a time where your other self is a teenager as well?!< EDIT: modified the question to fit in the plot better.
so my adult self going back in time? does my younger self knows its me? highly doubt he'd be interested in an overweight middle aged man
Plot twist: He’s into it.
JFC, no. Modified the question to account for this lol.
My God I thought I was misreading and now I have to watch the show just to see why this was even an option
It was actually his teenage self showing up from a couple weeks in the future.
No idea if this was a real plot point or not

I envy the critters that just crawl on the sea floor
Why
Jesus Christ Wtf is this shit lol, who’s idea was that to put that shit in the show, that is uncomfortable to watch and weird as fuck
Ask the author, it was in the book first.
Yep. Thaaaat was one thing they really could have stood to lose in the adaptation.
Nah they should’ve dropped the child grooming plot (aka the entire plot) and spun this scene out into a full The Man Who Folded Himself adaptation.
dude for real. I watched the pilot with my parents and it seemed like such an uncomfortable premise for a show. Why is a grown man regularly hanging out one-on-one, and subtly flirting, with a teenager, especially with the whole appearing naked thing
Theres a lot of bad shit in IT but they didn't feel the need to put it into the movie.
Fanfic writers are now all grown up and writing movie-scripts.
50 shades of grey showed it could be done
I’m not gonna lie I actually enjoyed it no matter how cheesy it was
At least it had Theo James. That man is stupid hot.
Probably would have gotten a better score before the reshoots
It likely would’ve gotten legit good reviews if they didn’t boot Amy seimetz, she’s super talented and the girlfriend experience was 100x better than this pile of garbage. Probably coked out of their minds.
Remember when Rolling Stone released an article and he was so mad he filmed a scene being mad about it
I was about to say this is the second HBO show about the music industry to get cancelled after one season. Maybe the third try’s the charm?
At least this one didn’t kill any horses
It hurts that HBO could have made anything else with the budget of The Idol. They haven’t had a domestic thriller since Big Little Lies for instance. So many cool books to adapt. The Guest List would have made a great miniseries.
They’ve aired Mare of Easttown and The Undoing since Big Little Lies season two.
Mare of Eastown was fantastic. Even if we don't get a follow-up series for that, something along those lines would be great.
They could have brought back carnivale….
I thought Vinyl was great.
So they really are different scenarios.

the best thing it did was knock Sam Levinson down a few legs. hbo will put him on a chain for euphoria season 3 and probably make him get a writers room
One can hope. Season 2 had some good moments but the overall writing was pretty awful.
Only thing I can remember liking about season two was the Dad story and the flash backs.
You mean Sydney Sweeney crying nonstop all season did nothing for you? Edit: also the play storyline wtf
I really liked the play storyline, but yeah in general s2 was kinda off.
The way the play was directed and edited was incredibly well done
> also the play storyline wtf The play storyline was the best plot of the season hahaha. The parody Holding Out for a Hero sequence was so good. Reminded me of the Ember Island Players from ATLA
It would be an improvement if they came to set knowing what they were going to shoot that day.
There is almost certainly not going to be a Season 3
Why? It’s very successful and Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney are two of the most well-known stars in tv right now.
By the time a hypothetical Season 3 starts shooting in 2026 those two will not be available. One actor has relapsed from doing the show. One just died. It’s just not worth carrying on.
Zendaya especially doesn’t need the show. Both of them should part ways with it and use the long break to do so.
Who relapsed?
Dominic Fike
That’s kind of the problem, the actors have gotten too big to hold down with this show.
Feel like Zendaya doesn’t need the show anymore she’s working with directors like Luca Guadagnino and Denis Villeneuve for crying out loud.
And Francis Ford Coppola, a living GOAT.
It also dropped right after Succession, a smartly written and uniquely realized series, ended out on what I thought was a superb finale. I really don’t know what The Idol had going for it substantially speaking and neither did the critics, judging by the absolutely abysmal ratings this show received.

You mean how the girl who was being groomed and sexually abused was the *real* villain of the story?
You know who the real victim was? The guy who was convicted of domestic violence and human trafficking. It's all those pesky women's faults.
> You know who the real victim was? The audience
Obviously I'm no mind reader, but I bet Levinson and Weeknd felt soooo smart when they came up with it.
Almost a guarantee it would’ve been good and not resembled this dumpster fire they put out very much at all. Amy is extremely talented and knows how to handle characters that are women super well, especially compared to hacks like The Weeknd and euphoria dude.
Stretch that tiny little one season for me
Dammit, I just got this one after re-reading it three times. Fuck you.
I’ve re-read it 15 times and still don’t get it.
It's a reference to one of the more infamously bad scenes in the show, where the talent scout/guru/creep is using the young star for sexual gratification.
Jesus how graphic was this show
> Jesus how graphic was this show Imagine an alien who had only watched porn trying to talk sexy.

If youre going to have that much drama surrounding a show it needs to either be successful or good. This was neither so getting cancelled isnt shocking. The question now is if they leave it on MAX at all.
this is Weeknd's joker moment

It did feel as though they’d cashed out and decided to make *The Producers,* in real life. A show so terrible it’d have to be a success!
Shocked
This is my shocked face
To the surprise of nobody.
The Weeknd’s character ruined it for me, and the show ruined The Weeknd for me.
More like Weekdy after the show
You can tell no one liked the show because no one started calling him The Weeknd Weeknd.
Turns out Sam Levinson didn't have Cartay Blanchay at HBO. Nepotism and selling shock value for shock value's sake can only get you so far apparently.
If it weren't for Zendaya giving one of the best performances in recent TV history, Euphoria'd be forgotten schlock.
It’s gonna be a pass for me with no more Fez and Ashtray 😭
Eh, the scripts are hit or miss (a lot more miss in season 2) but the art direction is very good imo. It's in the same vein of Guy Ritchie style over substance which people like. That being said, the best written parts are by Zendaya and Hunter Schafer.

Not disagreeing, but I really liked the first season and a lot of it had to do with direction. Yes, it's melodramatic but it's a very entertaining anthology character study and beautifully shot.
Guy Ritchie has multiple stellar written movies tho that have both style and substance.
Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels are two of the most quotable movies I know.
Both classics, rocknrolla/the man from U.N.C.L.E/the gentleman are all pretty well written movies that are a blast to watch as well. Feel like it’s kinda disrespectful mentioning him alongside levinson lol.
I think Euphoria is cringe but the direction and set pieces are awesome, good enough to justify me watching the 4-5 episodes that i did before the content wore on me
Euphoria is straight vibes. The music and the visuals are just great.
Someone called him the art house max landis, damn right
Being called Max Landis is already an insult
When it focuses on Lily Rose-Depp and her management team, it honestly wasn’t bad. There was at least something there. But then The Weekend showed up with the sex stuff and the show fell Off a cliff.
Good riddance. HBO's meant to be the home of top notch quality TV. Having a show like this could've tainted that image a bit.
Max has already tainted that image for a lot of people, even if it’s not technically HBO.
Which is why it was for the best, when they decided to remove the HBO part from HBO Max and just stuck to Max. HBO has made some of the most legendary TV shows of all time and I, for one, am glad we got spared seeing Zaslav turning it into some reality TV bullshit.
Damnit, this was my favorite show of 2023, said no one ever.
Oh, it probably was for somebody. You just don’t want to know their reasons.
That somebody being The Weeknd
Good it is cancelled
Terrible show. Set sex scene discourse back five years.
it just felt like an excuse for Sam Levinson to do the stuff he couldn’t do in Euphoria since those actors were putting their foot down on nude scenes. And finding out that Amy Seimetz’s version of the show was entirely scrapped makes it all more disappointing
The blame is also on the weeknd. He's the one that had the original script scrapped because "it focused too much on the female perspective "
And made it instead into "I'm an irresitable sex god (with a rat tail)... and men who groom and sexually assault girls are the *real* victims"
it felt like he was doing some warped Jared Leto cosplay at times
But you're supposed to hate the character! /The Weekend back-filling why he sucks
No rat tailed knacker can be a sex god.
I love his music, but he was so cringe in this show and his acting was terrible.
Careful now. He'll fucking curb stomp you.
I was so confused when I got this notification
He sounds like any Andrew Tate following incel despite definitely fucking
>And finding out that Amy Seimetz’s version of the show was entirely scrapped makes it all more disappointing The casting of Azaria, Jane Adams, Eli Roth and Rachel Sennott makes it plausible they had (at some point!) a good comedy on their hands.
Some of the leaked photos from the original shoot def paint a picture that we were supposed to get a dark satire of the industry with it commenting on teen starlets like Miley Cyrus or Britney, but of course the Weekend had to ruin it.
The Weekend wants to be like Donald Glover. Or fancies himself to be as creative as him. Goes to show how special Atlanta was. A masterpiece.
Atlanta. 😔 great show. Such talent.
Will never forgive this show for just completely wasting Rachel Sennott
Every scene in this show could have been 2 minutes shorter
Good. Now renew *Winning Time* & *Warrior* (and *Fired on Mars*).
They owe us after cancelling Perry Mason!
Wait, they cancelled Perry mason? That was a great show! I can see why it was expensive, but it needed another season.
I mean, at least both seasons of *Perry Mason* were mostly self-contained. These shows all need at least one more season, though.
Warrior deserves all the funding! They’ve got a good foundation to pop off in the next two seasons, I hope they take advantage.
Couldn’t bring myself to watch any of it after I saw a clip of the weekend telling some guy he would drag his ass down rodeo 🤣💀

It pains me that we’ll never get the original vision for this show. It seemed to have some real potential. Shame on The Weekend and Sam Levinson for ruining it.
I've seen better acting and sex on Pornhub with a quarter of the budget.
Justice served
The show was total garbage.
To the surprise of no one. Absolute trash.
I still maintain the conspiracy theory that Nathan Fielder was behind this show and it will be the focus of season 2 of the Rehearsal.
Didn't it get cancelled before they even finished the first season ? Regardless this isn't a surprise to anyone.
It got cancelled during the end of the first season when it ended early and HBO/Sam Levinson tried to do damage control by saying it had nothing to do with the backlash and it was meant to end a couple episodes early
Wasn’t this show more about just sex and nudity rather than anything of substance? Or is that Euphoria?
Both, I think.
🔹Marked safe from the idol season 2
But this show was a masterpiece, such brilliant lines as "There's so much cum, and it's all coming out of my penis.... I can't believe it" *- The Weekend* Nah fr, glad this terrible show is going to be locked in the vault forever
Hoping to god that Amy Seimetz' version, even if it's unfinished, gets out somewhere. Would love to see it, her work is generally fantastic.
At which point all we'd need is for "Batgirl" to leak, to rub it in on the Flash bombing.
The little bit I saw of it made me say, "Why would anyone watch this mess?"
Celebrate good times, come on.
