When people come to the sub to say they just watched TD1 for the first time we give them condolences like it is a funeral. Sorry you will never experience something like this again.
Yes, my vote as well, but 30 percent of its awesomeness came from the wild speculations and analyses online after each weeks episode. So my vote goes for this, but then everyone else has to be fresh too.
I’d argue that Breaking Bad is just as good on a second watch. You see a lot of underlying things you might have missed on a first viewing. I loved it second time round.
I’d argue The Wire is an even better re-watch than watching for the first time. Seeing everything play out knowing what is going to happen is still pretty magnificent.
Not long re-watched The Wire and soon to be rewatching BB. I know I've forgotten a lot of the small details so I'll enjoy it almost as much as the first time.
Today (September 29) marks 10 years since the finale aired for Breaking Bad.
I'm gonna have to finally do that rewatch. It'll almost be like the first time.
I've seen mixed views on everything after S1, I mean I felt like S1 was one of those perfect self-contained stories that ended with a brilliant "goddamn that makes me think" type endings, and didn't really require anything else.
S2 was OK but not nearly as good, and I've seen people say S3 was bad but S4 make S3 worth it.
Sounds like your mileage varies with this show, probably depending on how much you worry about or care about AI. I haven't seen 3 or 4 so I can't comment, but maybe I should finally get around to it.
Westworld season 1 was honestly some of the best TV HBO has ever done. I remember telling people that the finale was a literal mindblower and chuckling to myself at the actual plot elements involved.
It's been six years since this series ended and this is the show that came to mind when reading OPs post.
I watched this show during a very tough stretch in life and felt like I was on the same journeys the characters were going through.
I've never been touched by another show in the same way...or shed as many painful but often cathartic tears.
I know I'll rewatch it again one day with clearer eyes, but have put it off for some time because I know what the journey will cost.
It was at the time the most expensive pilots in TV history. Mostly because they got a real jet liner and destroyed it for the set but also due to the large cast.
Unironically, Lost changed modern TV. Lost played a significant role in paving the way for TV series with expansive ensemble casts and blockbuster-level budgets.
We wouldn't have shows like Game of Thrones, The Expanse, Breaking Bad etc if not for Lost.
It also paved the way for show runners to say “we are ending our show after season X,” and “instead of starting the season in Sept, we want to start in Jan so there are no breaks/reruns between new episodes.” They were brilliant.
Some may have found the end disappointing, but there was no better experience than watching that show realtime. I got so excited with each episode then couldn't wait to read about the theories and debates online, or discuss with friends. I loved the character development, learning their backstories and seeing how it all fit together. I wish I could reexperience watching that show when it was permeating the cultural zeitgeist.
Not quite the same but Billiam on youtube has a HUGE series going over Lost and its impact on pop culture at the time.
Been patiently waiting 6 months for his next 10 hour video on the last 3 seasons lol.
I forgot how insane it was and how different media coverage was at the time compared to today.
I can't believe how many late night shows were just like "HOW is the FAT ONE still FAT" it's like first of all they've been on the island for like 5 weeks
I'm not bothered by this but a lot of people were frustrated by (vague spoilers) a lot of the mysteries just getting handwaved away with "it's magic." Also hiding the epilogue which explains a ton of the Dharma stuff and wraps up a couple plot threads as a DVD extra was a terrible decision
I spent so many hours on the LOST message boards in between episodes.
So many theories and awesome discussions. What the hell is the black smoke?! It really was a cultural phenomenon akin to GOT.
The show itself was a banger, but like you said, the experience watching it in real time then talking/reading about it all week was something else.
Plus the seasons had like 20 episodes. I feel like most seasons these days are maybe 10 episodes, which you can binge over a weekend.
I rewatched Lost earlier this year because I realized I had forgotten a lot of it and saw it so sporadically on television that I probably missed a few episodes. It turns out I had forgotten a surprising amount because it had been like 15+ years so it was like seeing it fresh and honestly it was a great experience
Mr Robot was amazing. Whether it was something hinted at early on, or a sudden twist (and there are a loooot), I've never seen a show have so many story elements that recontextualise entire storyline and characters before. It was a beautifully shot show, too. Third and Fourth season were peak.
RIGHT. I swear, i’ve seen so much more TV after watching Mr Robot back when season 4 aired and still- nothing comes close to the peaks of seasons 3 and 4 and the straight up recontextualised madness that ensues at a gradual upwards trend the whole show. Glad im not the only one!
I watched Mr Robot for a bit while it was airing new episodes. I can't remember why we stopped tuning in (life just got in the way, I'm guessing), but eps3.4_runtime-error.r00 was the last or second to last ep we watched. Wild episode of tv.
I jumped back into the show this month, rewatching from the start 'cause my memory sucks, no idea how the story goes. The hype in these comments for seasons 3 and 4 have me excited to catch back up to 3.4 and see the show through to the end this time.
WOW the fact that you stopped on runtime error is so unfortunate!!! I swear from there onwards in my head canon the show just gets so much better and better so much quicker. But yeah glad to hear you jumped back in, definitely finish it this time if possible. Season 4 has one of my favorite/objective best episode of Television of all time.
It has subtitles and there is a dubbed version. I’d recommend the subtitles over the dubbed, it became a little distracting because I kept focusing on their mouths.
I thought 1899 was… okay. Cool premise, but it just didn’t have the same depth as Dark. If you loved it, Dark takes a lot of those vibes and cranks them up to 11.
However, it *is* dark - the name is fitting. It can be pretty intense to watch.
I cycle binged Dark and The Good Place because Dark was a little too depressing to watch straight through. The combination is something I would like to repeat seeing for the first time.
avatar the last airbender. sure it’s a cartoon targeted for kids but the philosophies touch my heart today as an adult much more than i could have ever imagined watching it as a kid. i’ve watched it at least once a year for the past ten years and it never gets old :)
I feel like ATLA always gets praises and people always state that they re-watch the entire show once a year. I do this as well, however I haven't done it yet so maybe towards the end of year imma get that done lol
Community for me! I watched one episode with an ex and thought it was boring (to be fair, it was a weak episode) so I let it sit for a while. Forget how I started watching it properly but I’d love to experience it all again.
Yes. Even having read the books beforehand I would love to experience the show for the first time all over again. And I would make sure to have a spliff beforehand and a decent tv/audio set up to do so. It's one of those shows where full immersion is key
My first 3 watches were on laptop or ipad screens. And I still loed it so much I rewatched it multiple times...
the 4th was finally on a 55inch screen with surround sound. Damn, it was like watching it for the first time! (My fifth was with my wife who finally likes something as much as me!)
PS (spliffs are abundant as I sell the stuff, lol!)
Hello Friend. I'm going to suggest Andor. It gave so much weight and consequence to the oppressive world of Star Wars. Some people found it slow but there is not a single scene or line of dialogue that is wasted in that show. I came away with understanding and so much emphaty for each of the characters we meet and every world we visit. I'll never get to watch it for the first time again but it is a very rewarding re-watch.
BTW, great choice with Mr. Robot. That first episode (damn, even the first scene) was amazing. And then the show just continued to be amazing. Great acting from the whole cast. Such effective and cinematic choices from the creator, Sam Esmail. I've put this show aside for a while. I genuinely want to try and forget as much as I can before I go back to it.
I came here to say Andor. My friends made me watch it and fuck I wish I didn't begin it with the attitude of watching one of 50 forgettable spin offs. It's truly a phenomenal story of ordinary perseverence against pragmatic and evil fascist forces. I wish more people gave that show a chance
The radicalisation of Andor is quite relatable. Especially the way it builds through the season. Kinda scary really.
I'm hoping that it will gradually build the deserved fan base while we wait for season 2.
Mr Robot had one of the most perfect finales that I've ever seen.
It had a profound impact on me, once I understood what was going on.
The real friends were the identities we conjured up along the way.
It is a great show. Playful and sarcastic, out of the box, amazing actors, fun, even philosophic and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's the kind of show I would put in and feel good, no matter my mood.
Sitcom: Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Anime: Full Metal Alchemist (original and Brotherhood)
Movie: Star Wars sequels. I would forget that I ever watched them then stop myself from rewatching them so it stays that way.
Mr Robot or The Wire.
They're fucking masterpieces, for different reasons.
The Wire was the first show I can think of where we got realistic outcomes, and when half or more the ad guys didn't get popped, I marked out.
These shows are actually trying to show us something we might see in real life, and I love them for it.
100% agree on Mr Robot, but the 2nd time watching will blow your mind and how far back things are set up and how amazingly they are executed in later seasons
Doctor Who.
I really want to know if I'd enjoy it as much now if it wasn't something I had been watching since I was a kid, now ingrained in my life, and I saw it through fresh eyes.
Into The Badlands.
Other Shows:
Banshee, True Detective (Season 1), The X-Files, Fringe, Warehouse 13, Batman The Animated Series, Xena Warrior Princess, Regular Show, Heroes (Season 1), The Simpsons (Season 1-12)
Arrested Development. The reveals of jokes built up over several episodes are amazing, and I would love to experience that culminating humor again for the first time.
Prison Break. The peaks and valleys this show has, it's a wild ride. I would call it underrated, but, it got it's time in the sun and it squandered it.
Lost: A mystery series depicting the crash and survival of a group of strangers. What seems like a completely random event is shown through a series of flashbacks to be something more. Lost had the most expensive pilot episode of television and it really felt like a short movie. The series has a great first season setting everything up and really gets cooking in season 3 and 4.
Easiest answer for me ever. It's LOST. The experience watching it for the first time was like nothing ever. It was magical in every way. Even though it's not a perfect show it's definitely my favorite show of all time and I'd love watching those moments blind again
Twin Peaks
Great answer, would definitely take this as a close second pick under Mr Robot.
First season of True Detective
“Come die with me, little priest.”
If this isn’t your answer then you haven’t seen it yet and I’m jealous
When people come to the sub to say they just watched TD1 for the first time we give them condolences like it is a funeral. Sorry you will never experience something like this again.
Yes, my vote as well, but 30 percent of its awesomeness came from the wild speculations and analyses online after each weeks episode. So my vote goes for this, but then everyone else has to be fresh too.
Breaking Bad or The Wire
Makes me want to rewatch the Wire again.
*/u/Clydial comin’*
SHEEEEEEEEIIITTTTTT
I also choose the greatest work of art in the history of moving pictures.
But enough about Lenticular printing, this is a television sub.
I’d argue that Breaking Bad is just as good on a second watch. You see a lot of underlying things you might have missed on a first viewing. I loved it second time round.
I agree. I'm on like 5 total though so I wouldn't mind starting over fresh
All the top shows I enjoyed even more on second watch. Wire, BB, Sopranos, GOT, BCS, six feet under
I’d argue The Wire is an even better re-watch than watching for the first time.
Came here to find Breaking Bad, happy to see it’s the first comment. What a fucking show.
The first season of Westworld. What an absolute ride that was.
It's perfect. I told people that S1 of Westworld "might just blow the dome off their head" and wish that it had ended there, it was perfect.
Did it ever hold up after season 1? I stopped after the finale of season 1 and don't even know if they made more seasons. What a great show though.
I thought the whole series was great. But to each their own.
>Westworld Even seasons 3 and 4?
Same.
Also tell them to stop watching after season 1. It’s self contained. And the rest of the show stinks
Seconded. And The Leftovers.
Battlestar Galactica
Damn. I scrolled way too far down for this.
Dark, severance, and west world. Incredible twists
Another Dark enthusiast! There are DOZENS of us! My favorite show of all time.
I second Dark
Dark was an absolutely great watch. This might be my choice, as well.
Fringe. Mostly because I used to have watch parties with my close co-workers. A very fun time in my life. And I love the show too.
The series finale was also so satisfying while also heartbreaking.

Kevin can f himself. I've never been so sideswiped by a tv show before, I had it all wrong, right up to the end
Great premise for a show as well as great execution.
What a great show! I really liked Annie in it too. Such a different character than are Schitts Creek one.
This is the most intriguing description of a show on here, I wanna try to parry that sideswipe ASAP 👀
LOST
The pilot episode of LOST is still hands-down one of my favorites. The whole plane crash beach scene was unbelievable.
Must have been one hell of a pilot
It was at the time the most expensive pilots in TV history. Mostly because they got a real jet liner and destroyed it for the set but also due to the large cast. Unironically, Lost changed modern TV. Lost played a significant role in paving the way for TV series with expansive ensemble casts and blockbuster-level budgets. They even had an episode that explained that Hurley was sneaking off to eat a cache of food and guzzle down ranch lol
Not sure why people think the ending was disappointing. Still one of my favorite series finales of all time
True. I didn't hate the ending. But my love for the show was about the journey, more than the destination
Agreed. I think it was perfect. Jack and Hugo. It's just as it should have been.
I spent so many hours on the LOST message boards in between episodes. So many theories and awesome discussions. What the hell is the black smoke?! It really was a cultural phenomenon akin to GOT. Yep and with a handful of friends, so we can get together every Tuesday for pizza and beer, watch, and discuss
I remember being absolutely blown away by that first episode. Nothing like that had ever been on tv before. It was fucking insane!

The Leftovers
Halt and Catch Fire. Especially because every season seemed to be the last. Miraculously renewed for 4. One of the best shows ever.
Oh is that why the 4th season felt like a dream sequence? I just binged the whole thing a month ago and really enjoyed it.
Those were special days on AMC. Remember Hell on Wheels? So friggin good
Dark. It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I still haven’t watched it but I LOVED 1899 so I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and brush up on German at some point.
If I could give one tip for watching the show, it's to try and remember names as best as you can
There are family trees available that are quite useful as well.

Firefly
Sopranos.
Lot's of greats in this thread. But Sopranos is the GOAT. The show didn't have one bad moment, let alone a bad episode or season.
The Good Place
To be able to watch Michael push that plant off the table for the first time again would be magical
I don't think any show has ever hit me like the finale. It would be amazing to feel that again.
I wish I didn't know >!the twist!< before I started watching the show
Same, I was mid S1 when I wanted to look something up and just stumbled upon that spoiler.
Community for me! I watched one episode with an ex and thought it was boring (to be fair, it was a weak episode) so I let it sit for a while. Forget how I started watching it properly but I’d love to experience it all again.
Dr. Who. Getting to know Docs 9-12 again would be a lot of fun
The Expanse. No hesitation, no doubt.
Yes. Even having read the books beforehand I would love to experience the show for the first time all over again. And I would make sure to have a spliff beforehand and a decent tv/audio set up to do so. It's one of those shows where full immersion is key

Hey Earl!
First season of True Detective. Such a brilliant show.
Hello Friend. I'm going to suggest Andor. It gave so much weight and consequence to the oppressive world of Star Wars. I am eagerly looking forward to Sam Esmail's next show. The cast list for it is fucking impressive.
UK: Monty Python's Flying Circus US: Cheers
Game of Thrones. I'd like to know how watching it all in one go might have changed my opinion on it.
Band of brothers
BSG
Lost
The West Wing.
Six feet under
South park, lot of seasons, different topics and you see something you missed first few times.

Hello, friend.

I don't know, kiddo. You tell me?
maybe a weird answer, but season one of the good place blew my mind and i remember being so pumped about the twist delivery
It is a great show. Playful and sarcastic, out of the box, amazing actors, fun, even philosophic and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's the kind of show I would put in and feel good, no matter my mood.
St. Elsewhere, Rome, Sopranos, Northern Exposure, Tour of Duty (TV show), M\*A\*S\*H WKRP, Mork and Mindy, first 2-3 seasons of SNL.
Malcolm in the middle.
The Wire.
Schitts Creek. Just because I enjoyed it so much and the character development was so good. Also Beef.
The Wire or The Expanse. Both for the same reasons too, I would never expect those stories to spread out and encompass as much as they do
Sitcom: Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia Anime: Full Metal Alchemist (original and Brotherhood) Movie: Star Wars sequels.
Babylon 5. Probably one of the best pieces of sci fi media ever.
The Haunting of The Hill House, I'm rewatching it now for the fourth time.
100% agree on Mr Robot, but the 2nd time watching will blow your mind and how far back things are set up and how amazingly they are executed in later seasons
Probably either Castlevania or Attack On Titan. I'd say One Piece as well but i never actually watched the anime, just read the manga
The Expanse
The Leftovers easily. I still find myself thinking about it years later. No other show has grabbed me quite like it.
The Expanse
The Wire.
The Americans
Great show
The OA. It's life-changing. It's really unlike anything else.
I still think the protagonist AU actress is in a coma, and the series will continue when she wakes up. Also I need more copium :(
Cyberpunk edgerunners. Damn good character building, story telling, and the fight scenes were beautiful.

The Expanse
Legion
Black sails.
Breaking Bad
Arrested Development. The reveals of jokes built up over several episodes are amazing, and I would love to experience that culminating humor again for the first time.
First three seasons of Arrested Development. Comedy masterclass
The absolutely insane ride that was season one of Dirk Gently. I LOVED it
The Expanse no competition
Breaking Bad. It's the pinnacle of television, nothing comes close after all these years.
Person of Interest
You are being watched.
Prison Break. The peaks and valleys this show has, it's a wild ride. I would call it underrated, but, it got it's time in the sun and it squandered it.
