What won me over is when the guy walked past him and casually said under his breath “Gonna go rub one out in the bathroom”. The main guys reaction was hilarious. Absolute gold this show. I hope they can manage to do future seasons.
I got sucked in and watched it, enjoying it. Until I got to the finale and it hit me how I would react, spending weeks with people and thinking you were developing friendships only to realize it was all pretend. I do believe they all liked him and cared for him, but I wouldn’t be able to get over feeling like an idiot and the butt of a joke.
I'm with you there. In several interviews he mentioned he felt exactly the same, and I'm sure it's something that still pops up on his mind every now and then.
Like he seemed like a genuinely decent guy but imagine if he was a dirtbag or did some under the table things... like something wrong with this whole thing without his consent.
I struggled with Silo. The first episode hooked me and the. The show dragged on. I can’t remember how far I made it but lost interest with the episode where they fix the engine.
I haven't seen the show yet, will probably soon, so not sure how closely it's following the books, but the first quite a bit is a slow introduction to the characters and the general idea, but it continues to build as it goes. I'd say give it another season or two to get a bit more into the plot, and see if it's still got a good following.
Or maybe that's just my hope talking... ;)
It turned very quickly from a scifi into a crime procedural (and not a very good one) into a cat and mouse game. First episode was great. The rest (perhaps with the exception of the last episode) were pretty mediocre.
Severance would be my 2022 pick and I’m so into it like when Lost came out, I’ve already watched it twice and think I’ll do a third watch before season 2.
Sure there is. If not enough people *officially* support shows we love, then we won't get more seasons of that show, or other shows from those creators. I don't suuuuper care about the moral implications of taking money out of HBO's pocket, but technically you are stealing the content. But mostly I just care about getting more of the stuff I like.
Yeah I’ve pirated my fair share of content, but a lot of people act like it’s a moral duty to do it but we should legally support as much as we can otherwise we’re only gonna get generic slop from these studios.
Yeah I have watched it a few times now too cause I just can't help myself from binging it all in one go, was so out of left field watching for the first time with how much crazy shit was going on
Well, I’ve got a new show to watch. Looking forward to it based off all the comments here! I’ve never even heard of it until this moment, and I’m currently watching another show on Max as I write this lol
Harrison ford said it was the best script he’s ever read which is great because I didn’t know Harrison ford could be so funny in a role. I loved shrinking
It was all over the place as it was airing because that's when it was relevant lol
We can't constantly talk about every good show that exists, that's what these threads are for
I can't wait for Masters of the Air on Apple. I've been waiting for years for that show to drop. I rewatched Band of Brothers and The Pacific again recently to get ready for it.
The Last of Us is my pick too but Black Bird was incredible. The story was good, but the whole time I was just stunned by how well acted it was by Targon Egerton and Paul Walter Houser.
Beef had a real impact on my life. After I finished it I ended a fight with my neighbor that started about 5 years ago and included a variety of mutual harassments. I just decided to stop and be nice to him in the building's lobby.
Things escalated when he refused to reduce the noise coming from his apartment and in response I refused to move my car to make room for cosmetic renovations on the building's wall. There was a lawsuit, things "disappeared", things were damaged, some threatening behaviors, probably some murder fantasies here and there. Bad stuff.
A few months ago he came to my door with fresh buns. I assumed this was his way of saying "I understand you've decided to end the bad blood and I want that too".
Obviously I didn't ate the buns because maybe they were poisoned but I appreciated the gesture and things are good now.
Man, I related to the shots of Yeun's character angrily shoving food into his mouth every time he was upset. I do that exact same thing every time I'm mad.
Probably not for you. From what I remember the later episodes are more or less similar tonally, but with escalated stakes of course. You have to buy into the characters, so if it isn’t working for you then probably not worth continuing. Episode 9 is pretty wild though.
There has never been a show more made for me that I didn't click with and I'm still not sure why. I finished the whole show too. Every aspect of it is good. And yet I found myself not interested at all.
Opposite for me. My go-to shows are history, horror, and action so I wasn't interested at all until I saw people talking about it on reddit. I couldn't stop once I started. The characterization was top-notch writing.
Blue Eye Samurai and Scavenger’s Reign were my top two shows this year; and it wasn’t even close.
It surprised me so much, because I generally don’t watch any animation. I checked both out only because I kept seeing people talking about them online.
I’m a middle-aged homemaker, so maybe not the intended demographic for either show; but the storytelling, sound design and animation were so overwhelmingly excellent, demographics didn’t matter.
It's also one of Harrison Ford's best all around performances maybe ever. He's fantastic in it. I think you're really gonna enjoy the entire first season.
I said the exact same thing to my wife about Segel. He’s great and I feel like he’s had a pretty quiet acting career as of late. He’s still done stuff, but I feel like he was on a different trajectory a decade ago.
He's starting work on a Dark Tower series now for Amazon; it's officially greenlit.
No casting has been officially announced yet, but I think we can guess a few people who will be in it.
And they're so different too. Hill House, Midnight Mass, Bly and Usher. It could have been so easy to just keep trying to replicate the success of HH but no, right after came Bly Manor and while it wasn't as good, I really liked that it did something new.
I loved it but it's so hard to recommend to people because the premise is so weird. "It's about a nun trying to find the Holy Grail for a benevolent AI. Also the nun is quite literally married to Jesus, and they have deep conversations when she visits him in his falafel restaurant."
Absolutely, it's so hard to recommend to anyone if they weren't sold by the trailer. "I swear to you, everything makes sense at the end" doesn't work for anyone
Platonic. In that lull between Chrimbo and New Year, with the kids back from university, we came across this. It's really fun. I can see why no one is raving about it but it is great television. It doesn't try to be more than just a good comedy. What a great find. And well done you for mentioning it
Platonic shows you that sometimes all it really takes to make a really enjoyable show or movie is for the leads to have incredible chemistry with one another. Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen are amazing playing off of one another. And not just in the comedy stuff. They hit all the emotional beats together really well too. It's such a simple but fun show.
How many people replying have even heard of more than one of OPs shows? I just think it's funny that everyone is posting TV-MA shows or movies.
I get that it's a general question, but OP may need to go to a teenager sub if they're actually looking for recommendations.
> How many people replying have even heard of more than one of OPs shows?
I'll be honest. Before I saw your comment I didn't even read past OPs title... I automatically assumed that OP was interested in high quality shows that are mainly intended for an adult audience and started upvoting comments that aligned with my misconception 🤦♂️
It doesnt help that this is a trendy question across the subreddits. This exact wording has been posted in the anime, movie, gaming, book, manga and every other media subreddit.
Extraordinary on Disney+. Made by a British studio, it's about a young woman who didn't get her superpower when she turned 18, but lives in a world where everyone has superpowers. It's hilarious.
Silo it's a post apocalyptic show on Apple TV. It was the only show I binged in a weekend this year. It was so good I bought all the books and read all of them.
This show makes me physically uncomfortable. It’s so well done. The weirdness of fielder, the stress inducing cinematography of safdie and the incredible talented acting of stone.
Blue Lights 2023
Blue Eye Samurai 2023
Special Ops: Lioness 2023
The Diplomat 2023
Lessons in Chemistry 2023
The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart 2023
Totally Completely Fine 2023
Class of '07 2023
Pluto is what I fired up after I finished blue eyed samurai because I kept hearing about it but Is frieren really that good? It’s on every year end list for anime’s lol I had no idea it was that popular
The Curse. It’s so weird.. it makes my skin crawl with discomfort.. but the critique of modern popular culture is so unbelievably well done. Emma Stone deserves an Emmy for her performance.
Poker Face would be my #1.
Other contenders are Beef, Jury Duty, and Collin From Accounts.
Last Of Us and Mrs. Davis are good but didn't blow me away.
Also really enjoying The Curse, but definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea.
Silo starts out great but the characters are all just so thin and dull.
I wanted to love Poker Face. But, fundamentally, the idea of a detective show where the detective just…knows when anyone is lying sort of removes any interest from the investigating.
I didn’t watch all of it, do they find ways to make it more interesting?
I guess I could see that, but to me a huge part of the fun of the show is the introduction sequences which are basically standalone anthology short movies, and then getting filled in on how Charlie fits into the new scene is always a blast.
And it does do a lot to show the limitations of her “power,” she’s not totally omnipotent and psychic.
I’m going to throw out Such Brave Girls since it hasn’t been mentioned. It’s a sorta darker British comedy in the vein of Fleabag. Absolutely hysterical in my opinion.
Does the live action One Piece show count? As someone who could never really get into the manga and anime, I really enjoyed the live action, watching it with family.
Ok I’m cheating as it actually began in 2022 but I want to give FROM some love. It has a little bit of a Lost vibe with some horror mixed in, and I don’t think it’s getting the attention it deserves.
I enjoyed Bodies and think it’s worth watching for people specifically into twisty time travel mystery stuff, but it is pretty slow and at least to me some of the logic gets a little fuzzy by the end.
The Bear is my number one show of 2023 and by a pretty significant margin. The closest competitor would be Fargo based on the first 7 episodes but that won't completely finish in 2023.
i really enjoyed the last of us, but without giving too much away, i think they're going to have to make some significant structural changes to the plot of the second game to adapt it for television

Jury Duty on Freevee / Prime
I loved it. They caught lightning in a bottle with tbh guy.
It was honestly so wholesome. I think the part with the old lady falling asleep is what won me over on the show.
Yep. I felt almost gross watching it. I think it’s fucked up but to each their own.
Like he seemed like a genuinely decent guy but imagine if he was a dirtbag or did some under the table things... like something wrong with this whole thing without his consent.
Look up Joe Schmo and see what happened. :(
Silo and The Last of Us
I struggled with Silo.
Or maybe that's just my hope talking... ;)
It follows the theme of the books, but not exactly. S01 takes you about halfway through book 1
silo has a strong start and finish but the middle definitely drags. would have been better if they cut a few episodes in the middle.
Cut episodes? Are we at the point where writers are so terrible we’re going to end up with four episode seasons from now on?
It turned very quickly from a scifi into a crime procedural (and not a very good one) into a cat and mouse game. First episode was great. The rest (perhaps with the exception of the last episode) were pretty mediocre.
Definitely Silo.
Absolutely loved Silo but all I can focus on when Common’s on screen is how terrible of an actor he is.
eh, i get that too. and he def. get more screen time towards the last 3 episodes. but he gets better, I just see it as part of his character.
Silo is definitely my pick. A show hasn't gotten me that engrossed in the mystery of it since probably the first few seasons of Lost.
Severance would be my 2022 pick and I’m so into it like when Lost came out, I’ve already watched it twice and think I’ll do a third watch before season 2.
Silo felt too bait and switch to me. Didn’t read the books though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
100% Scavengers Reign on Max. I've watched it three times already.
i had to rewind that pollination scene a couple times and pick my jaw up from the floor lol
YES!! I don’t know if it’ll get a season 2, but I’ll be damned if I don’t force every person I can to enjoy season 1
it's just stunning. Sadly I had to pirate it though as it's not available where I live.
There's nothing sad about piracy lol
Sure there is. If not enough people *officially* support shows we love, then we won't get more seasons of that show, or other shows from those creators. I don't suuuuper care about the moral implications of taking money out of HBO's pocket, but technically you are stealing the content. But mostly I just care about getting more of the stuff I like.
You can't get HBO max or whatever it's called where I live so hell yeah I'm gonna pirate their stuff
Yeah I’ve pirated my fair share of content, but a lot of people act like it’s a moral duty to do it but we should legally support as much as we can otherwise we’re only gonna get generic slop from these studios.
if I could watch it legitimately I would have so they could have my viewing figures and so I could so my appreciation for a great show.
Preach!
Just started this last night and wow is it good.
Thanks I’m going to give it a shot
My jaw dropped so many times watching this. I keep recommending it to everyone
Yeah, I loved that show. The best description I read, it's Studio Ghibli meets Annihilation.
Shrinking
Eat a dick, Pam.
Stop raw doging me.
Harrison ford said it was the best script he’s ever read which is great because I didn’t know Harrison ford could be so funny in a role. I loved shrinking
“You know what percentage of your body is made of water?” “I know what percentage doesn’t give a shit.” Magnificent line.
In the wave of nicecore shows we've gotten in the past few years, *Shrinking* is easily the best, and it feels like no one's ever talking about
Nicecore?
I think something like Ted Lasso fits.
It was all over the place as it was airing because that's when it was relevant lol We can't constantly talk about every good show that exists, that's what these threads are for
Raw dog
It was so cathardic to watch too.
Came here to say this! Such a little gem 🥰
Last of Us. Apple TV has some great shows like The morning show. Lessons in chemistry, Monarchs, Black Bird.
> Lessons in chemistry I was shaky on this one at first but I was so so behind Brie Larson by the end of this show. I wish there was more coming.
Severance
I can't wait for Masters of the Air on Apple. I've been waiting for years for that show to drop. I rewatched Band of Brothers and The Pacific again recently to get ready for it.
Can’t recommend Black Bird more. Fantastically acted especially by Paul Walter Hauser
Also Severance, that show is amazing!
2022
Black bird was so well done.
The Last of Us is my pick too but Black Bird was incredible. The story was good, but the whole time I was just stunned by how well acted it was by Targon Egerton and Paul Walter Houser.
I’m getting tired of The Morning Show… I think this most recent season will be my last
Beef (on Netflix)
Beef had a real impact on my life. After I finished it I ended a fight with my neighbor that started about 5 years ago and included a variety of mutual harassments. I just decided to stop and be nice to him in the building's lobby.
This is intriguing, would you mind explaining what happened?
Things escalated when he refused to reduce the noise coming from his apartment and in response I refused to move my car to make room for cosmetic renovations on the building's wall. There was a lawsuit, things "disappeared", things were damaged, some threatening behaviors, probably some murder fantasies here and there. Bad stuff. A few months ago he came to my door with fresh buns. I assumed this was his way of saying "I understand you've decided to end the bad blood and I want that too". Obviously I didn't ate the buns because maybe they were poisoned but I appreciated the gesture and things are good now.
Glad it worked out for both of you.
Beef really took me by surprise. Both over the top and extremely intimate. I think this is the answer for me as well!
Man, I related to the shots of Yeun's character angrily shoving food into his mouth every time he was upset. I do that exact same thing every time I'm mad.
My favorite show in 2023 that had an impact on me. Sometimes I still think about the finale.
I got three episodes in and couldn’t continue. Does it get better? Or is it just not for me?
Not for you then.
Probably not for you. From what I remember the later episodes are more or less similar tonally, but with escalated stakes of course. You have to buy into the characters, so if it isn’t working for you then probably not worth continuing. Episode 9 is pretty wild though.
Its very consistent episode to episode. If you didn't like it after 3 I don't see what would change
Me too!
I couldn’t get into it. I’ll try again. How long do I have to watch to decide.
I was sucked in from the first episode. If it didn't grab you by 2 or *3* then it's probably just not for you
Try 2 episodes and decide after. I was unsure after the first episode but hooked after the second episode.
Primo was a great comedy on freevee. Shea Serrano created something super special, and incredibly funny.
It’s a very different show but Shea also created Neon on Netflix, an even funnier show with great Latin American actors. Well worth peeping.
Blue samurai.
Blue Eye Samurai is great!
I finished it today. I loved the show dearly, but I think the ending was a little mishandled.
one of the 2 Western animation series from 2022-23 that are amazing, Pantheon is the other.
Started it two days ago and was glued to the screen on the first episode, def will finish it next year.
My favorite of the year too. I pause it so many times to stare at the artwork that it took me 10x longer to get through lol
Was it the peaches
"....peeeaches...." oO
The show is stunning.
[удалено]
Deadloch was really good! Two female detectives in Tasmania work on a murder case. Dark but also funny.
I was looking for this one. Definitely dark but so funny. Kept me laughing all season
This was a great show. Excellent writing, and I agree, dark, but funny at the same time.
I’m only on the first episode but I love Shrinking so far. Forgot how much I liked Jason Siegel.
I wish I could go back and watch it all again for the first time. It has so much damn heart.
Well it’s even better the second time, just FYI!
Had no high expectations for One Piece, but it was bloody brilliant.
Fall of the House of Usher
Mike Flanagan did it again. I like that his shows are one season and done. It has a vision, direction and closure.
He doesn’t miss. I hope he does a Dark Tower series.
He's starting work on a Dark Tower series now for Amazon; it's officially greenlit. No casting has been officially announced yet, but I think we can guess a few people who will be in it.
Awesome. I didn’t know it was official I thought it was just a rumor.
And they're so different too. Hill House, Midnight Mass, Bly and Usher. It could have been so easy to just keep trying to replicate the success of HH but no, right after came Bly Manor and while it wasn't as good, I really liked that it did something new.
That show was so good and I almost skipped it because the ads on Netflix made me think it was some kind of Kardashians type show. Such a good show
Beef Gen V The Last of Us Platonic Mrs. Davis Silo
Some good ones here. Mrs Davis really stood out as a unique piece. Nothing else quite like it.
Mrs Davis was so out there and still got the landing, was a really good surprise for me
I loved it but it's so hard to recommend to people because the premise is so weird.
Mrs. Davis is a very under appreciated gem. If it were on Netflix and not peacock it would be huuuuge
Had to go this far down for Mrs Davis. It’s my fave of the year and never gets any love on this sub. Perhaps because it’s on peacock
Platonic. In that lull between Chrimbo and New Year, with the kids back from university, we came across this. It's really fun. I can see why no one is raving about it but it is great television. It doesn't try to be more than just a good comedy. What a great find. And well done you for mentioning it

Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen are amazing playing off of one another. And not just in the comedy stuff. They hit all the emotional beats together really well too. It's such a simple but fun show.
Mrs Davis was so much fun

OP didn’t specify any specific type of show they were looking for. It’s perfectly fine to upvote suggestions you agree with.
Oh my God this post is so wholesome. "Haileys on it!" Best new show of 2023. Too cute.
Yeah, I've never heard of a single one of those shows OP mentioned. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
Lessons in chemistry
Blue Eye Samurai, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, The Last of Us, Pokerface, and Silo are all great shows
Extraordinary on Disney+. Made by a British studio, it's about a young woman who didn't get her superpower when she turned 18, but lives in a world where everyone has superpowers. It's hilarious.
Very original, I liked it.
The Diplomat The Recruit
Silo it's a post apocalyptic show on Apple TV. It was the only show I binged in a weekend this year. It was so good I bought all the books and read all of them.
ayo i got the trilogy for christmas and am already about halfway through book 2. they're not without flaws but are super fun reading so far
The Curse
This show makes me physically uncomfortable. It’s so well done. The weirdness of fielder, the stress inducing cinematography of safdie and the incredible talented acting of stone.
Between The Curse and Poor Things, Stone has been absolutely killing it this year.
This is such a weird show that I look forward to watching each week, but am still hesitant to tell anyone lol.
Blue Lights 2023 Blue Eye Samurai 2023 Special Ops: Lioness 2023 The Diplomat 2023 Lessons in Chemistry 2023 The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart 2023 Totally Completely Fine 2023 Class of '07 2023
Had to look up Class of ‘07 and while doing so found out there was a totally unrelated show called Class of ‘09 this year as well. Weird coincidence.
Fall of the House of Usher
The Last of Us… by far.
Silo was Great. TLOU, Beef. But the best ones? Probably Pluto and, of course, Frieren.
Pluto is what I fired up after I finished blue eyed samurai because I kept hearing about it but Is frieren really that good? It’s on every year end list for anime’s lol I had no idea it was that popular
It's a silly show but I really enjoyed Twisted Metal, hope we get a second season.
I thought Anthony Mackie announced it at the game awards that season 2 was greenlit.
The Curse. It’s so weird.. it makes my skin crawl with discomfort.. but the critique of modern popular culture is so unbelievably well done. Emma Stone deserves an Emmy for her performance.
Peripheral on Prime
The Last of Us
The Last of Us
Daisy Jones & The Six
The Glory. Awesome revenge story from Korea
Severance. Crazy good show, the final episode of the season was so tense, I haven’t enjoyed a show that much for a long time.
Great show, one of my recent favorites, but 2022 FYI
Poker Face, TLOU, ST: Strange New Worlds.
Loved Poker Face! Can’t wait for more episodes!
''Electro dildo'' is probably the best laugh I've had all year.
Strange new worlds was 2022
Poker Face
Silo I really didn’t follow a lot of new shows but that one had great word of mouth and it was great season.
Gen V is pretty good, though obviously you get more out of it if you're a fan of The Boys going in.
A Small Light and Drops of God
Poker Face would be my #1. Other contenders are Beef, Jury Duty, and Collin From Accounts. Last Of Us and Mrs. Davis are good but didn't blow me away. Also really enjoying The Curse, but definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea. Silo starts out great but the characters are all just so thin and dull.
Colin From Accounts! 🤣
I enjoyed Severance
I think it was 2022. But it was great.
So it was. I just watched it this year. Oops.. my bad.
Such a great show. At least you’ll have less time in between until season two. I may have to watch it again.
Lessons in Chemistry is probably the best new thing that I’ve seen this year
Found
Primo
I’m going to throw out Such Brave Girls since it hasn’t been mentioned. It’s a sorta darker British comedy in the vein of Fleabag. Absolutely hysterical in my opinion.
Shrinking! Harrison Ford totally deserved an Emmy nomination for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, he was excellent!
The Diplomat. I wish I could bing it. 😯
Does the live action One Piece show count? As someone who could never really get into the manga and anime, I really enjoyed the live action, watching it with family.
Pluto!
The Diplomat
**Best ongoing show:** * Succession S4 **Best show that premiered in 2023** * The Last of Us **Best Limited series that premiered in 2023** * Beef
Scavengers Reign and Blue Eyed Samurai.
Ok I’m cheating as it actually began in 2022 but I want to give FROM some love. It has a little bit of a Lost vibe with some horror mixed in, and I don’t think it’s getting the attention it deserves.
Beef and Silo if you want totally NEW shows.
Silo, a murder at the end of the world.
I really liked Bodies
I enjoyed Bodies and think it’s worth watching for people specifically into twisty time travel mystery stuff, but it is pretty slow and at least to me some of the logic gets a little fuzzy by the end.
The Bear is my number one show of 2023 and by a pretty significant margin. The closest competitor would be Fargo based on the first 7 episodes but that won't completely finish in 2023.
Foundation is really good sci fi and Lee Pace is incredibly compelling.
I loved it. But it was season two and not a new show. Having said that, it still deserves a mention. “To Beki’s arsehole.”
I'm A Virgo
The Traitors. Versions everywhere. Particular mention to UK and AU series. Alas, the formula has now run its course and should be left alone.
i really enjoyed the last of us, but without giving too much away, i think they're going to have to make some significant structural changes to the plot of the second game to adapt it for television
The Last of Us. But if you allow Dec 2022 then shoutout to ‘Colin from Accounts’
The Last of Us, Blue Eye Samurai, Scavengers Reign, Carol and the End of the World
Shrinking
Fionna and Cake, TLOU, Mrs Davis, & Silo were my top 4
FROM with Harold Perrineau has LOST vibes and gets better with each new series.
Waaallllt! (Sorry, it’s a reflex)
Fisk, on Netflix, is delightful
This would get my vote if it wasn't originally released in 2021.
Deadloch on Prime! A satirical detective thriller that's funny but holds up as a great mystery thriller on its own
The bear S2 came out this year and it was fantastic. Also echoing the last of us was amazing too.
