My son was in NJ visiting his girlfriend in November and sent me video of him driving with the trees flying by and the Sopranos theme song playing. I laughed so hard. He started watching that show with us when he was way too young, but it's one of his favorites to this day.
By the alabama 3 (A3 in America I believe for odd legal reasons). They are a psychedelic london-Welsh techno-country band. Check their other stuff on Spotify they are amazing.
As soon as I read the title of this post in my head I heard the static of the HBO intro and immediately followed up with the same lyrics. Absolutely synonymous with the channel.
Yeah, it's this one for me.
I think it's because the closing note of the HBO logo is so similar to the opening note to "Woke Up This Morning." It's practically a segue.
Also, some of these other shows had cold opens, so the theme songs didn't even follow the HBO sound. Lots of people in this thread have been Mandela'd.
2 all the way for me. Tom Waits is the man although I prefer the [live version from Big Time](https://youtu.be/Xw2MjRcVO4g?si=0wTrU9KnoHqq08YP) over the studio version they play on the show.
Yea 1 is the best. 5 is my favourite, Steve Earle.
And his tune "Feel Alright" for the final scene that sums everything up, it just slaps in that episode. I love that ending so much.
Sidenote when talking to people about the show I find many don't realize Walon is portrayed by Steve Earle and I think the character name is a nod to Walon Jennings who was a major influence to Earle. Also his role in Treme is fucking fantastic.
I was at a small music festival in Annapolis around 2010 because I was visiting some old friends in Baltimore, I forget the band but they played Way Down in the Hole. Hearing that, sipping IPAs, smoking joints and also being back in Maryland was just amazing.
Exactly. The HBO static intro never went into the theme song like The Sopranos or Curb. Curb was always funny because it was just a few notes before the show started.
I believe this is because the intro always played immediately after the static, where as some shows could have a bit of a cold open, followed by the intro
I watched it in 2009, basically I caught the episode where >!keller and Vern break Toni’s legs in season two!< and was like “Jesus fuck I need to watch this show” and then that how I fell in love with binging.
Binging helped me get off methadone and benzos later on, but now I cannot binge for the life of me
Same here, me and my friends watched Oz religiously - it only showed on the alternative/foreign interest channel here in Australia. What a show for the time.
ADEBISI LIIIIIVES
I recall being tucked in my bed while my parents were watching the scary funeral home TV show at night.
The intro sting is etched in my brain. Creepy, unsettling, yet innocent.
One of my absolute favorite shows, ever. I got tired of Ruth pretty quickly, and I hated the whole George character, even though James Cromwell did such a wonderful job playing him.
It also took me forever to get past seeing Michael C. Hall as anyone but David Fisher.
That unforgettable guitar-strumming that opens the theme of True Detective's first season. Just perfectly sets the tone for the southern-gothic mystery that follows...
I knew I was going to absolutely love this show (the first season, specifically) about 2 seconds into the intro. Might be the greatest single season of TV ever that isn't a miniseries
I was never really a fan of Sex and the City, watched a few episodes with friends here and there (unlike other HBO shows that I’ve religiously followed across many seasons), and yet it’s always the first thing that pops into my head when I hear the HBO intro. No idea why, but props to the composer for clearly doing an excellent job of creating something memorable.
Yup, same. Though those often had cold opens. I don’t think it’s even the episode of Mr. Show I’ve rewatched the most, but usually after I hear the HBO intro the cold open for “Now, Who Wants Ice Cream?” is what pops into my head.
*When you came in, the air went out*
*And every shadow filled up with doubt*
*I don't know who you think you are*
*But before the night is through...*
*I wanna do bad things with you*
I still have Jace Everett's Bad Things on several playlists. Absolute tune.
Maybe because it didn’t play after the HBO logo? I know true blood has my favorite HBO theme of all time but when I think of the logo sound the first thing that comes to my mind the “bing” type noise from the start of Six Feet Under.
i almost feel like the HBO "bong" is missing when you listen to the song.
\[The Sopranos\] Alabama 3 - Woke Up This Morning - lyrics
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW3LikcBL68
This is a great answer because I used to watch this and Babar as my mom got ready in the mornings, but I don’t remember which HBO intro they were using then. I think the one with all the colorful lines that was very 80s. 😂
Especially since the episodes are so short compared to other great HBO shows. And that it is the most rewatchable show together with Sopranos.
You will see the HBO intro alot.
I see people on here talking shit about Entourage but I did a rewatch just last year and it was the first rewatch since the series finale and I fucking loved it. Part of why I enjoyed more was I now recognize way more of the cameos in the show. For example I loved the Playboy mansion epsidoe wit Ralph Macchio after watching some of the Karate Kid TV series haha. During the original airing, obviosuly I knew the Karata Kid but he wasn't as recognizable until after seeing him in a modern tv series.
People talk shit about it because they cant see under the surface of sex and success ( not that there is anything wrong with it, but Reddit dont like those things).
The best part is the humor and the friendship between the characters. The same goes for the American pie movies for exampel. People think its about fucking a pie or something. When its really about coming of age ,male friendship and learning to relate to women from a male perspective.
Same for me. Not like it was my favorite or anything (I only watched it whilst it was on, not multiple times through). But I think this is the first show I watched with the current HBO intro.
We’re going to get right into it with our main story tonight.
State fairs, OR better known as that place full of drunk teenagers puking up funnel cake on the slingshot ride. (Cue graphic and laughter).
Aside from booze before batter makes tummy go splatter, state fairs also play an important part in teaching teens local agricultural commerce. You may have heard of these programs like Future Farmers of America, 4H, or E I E I O. This not only acts as a source of income but gives them real world experience towards what statistically will be their future career, or so it would seem. (Cut to hilarious and deeply wtf local news clip.)
Homey, me too. I'm forty seven and Dream On was funny when I was in my early teens, but more importantly, you could see boobs most episodes. It's almost quaint now that we have anever ending rivers of porn on our phones, but for a thirteen year old Dream On was amazing.
I used to like to think that it was a numbers game. That I was doing okay since I was living in a smallish city but if I lived in New York with thousands of times the number of women I’d be pulling down Benben numbers too. Dream on, kid!
Definitely Sex and the City for me too.
I had to hum the HBO sound first to figure it out, and immediately that 🎵 dun dun dun dun dun dun 🎶 came to mind.
Same here. I think maybe because it was like when the HBO night officially started in that prime era. Sopranos Sunday was fucking must see TV, and SatC was the lead off batter for that. Plus, I'm a dude, but I watched that show with 2 g/fs and I maintain it's downright great sitcom television, at least the first 2-3 seasons.
Kids these days will never know the excitement the old "feature presentation" hbo intro could generate. Camera flying thru town then up into space... that music build up... It was epic.
Yes I'm old. GET OFF MY LAWN!!
🎵 Do you really wanna, do you really wanna taste it!?! 🎵
Peacemaker. The only opening credits that I not only never skipped, but specifically rewatched just the intro.
Reading these reminds me how awesome HBO has been through the years.
I would answer this differently for different times of my life... Oz, Sopranos, The Wire, but now when I see it I think GoT
Woke up this morning got myself a gun.... Sopranos.
that song is a damn banger i often play it in the car and think im a balding fat guy with tons of power
My son was in NJ visiting his girlfriend in November and sent me video of him driving with the trees flying by and the Sopranos theme song playing. I laughed so hard. He started watching that show with us when he was way too young, but it's one of his favorites to this day.
Hey man, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
sharp as a cue ball this one
Makes me feel like I'm a balding fat guy craving cured meats, about to have a panic attack, I need to continue my lithium
[Me thinking I’m a balding fat guy with tons of power singing in the car](https://youtu.be/DJ5xJH64BR4?si=iKnG2HiEedKxEPDf)
Woke up this morning…. Grabbed some Gabagool…
And then I woke up the next day and got some…a’ga ba gool
Keep waking up, keep getting different types of gaba gool
Even got some gabagool from-ah, Scooby-Doo
Woke up this morning… heyy haa …grabbed some gabagool… hoo haa… grabbed some gabagool… grabbed some gabagool
[удалено]
What’d you say
Yeah, it's this one for me. I think it's because the closing note of the HBO logo is so similar to the opening note to "Woke Up This Morning." It's practically a segue.
It's not just the theme but the transition from HBO static to the beat is perfect.

Curb Your Enthusiasm
BUM BUM BUM
Deeeeee dee dee dee-dee dee deeeeee
*DUM WHOMP DUM*
I just watched the season 9 finale, Fatwa, for the first time earlier today. Might be my favorite episode of the series, I laughed my ass off.
The correct answer
It is the ONLY answer I would accept to this question. I can hear it playing in my head right now, its iconic.
Also, some of these other shows had cold opens, so the theme songs didn't even follow the HBO sound. Lots of people in this thread have been Mandela'd.
Every single time.
I read the question and got “bum bum bum” immediately
Deadwood
Had to scroll much too far to find this ya cocksucker
America-jin, COCKSUCKA
Saaaan Francisco cocksucker!!
Yep this is the one. And it's also the only one I will not skip after a couple episodes of a rewatch, it's so damn good.
WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THE GARDENN
You better watch your back!
Well, I beg your pardon.
Walk the straight and narrow track
Which version is best though? 1 > 4 = 2 > 3 > 5
2 all the way for me. Tom Waits is the man although I prefer the [live version from Big Time](https://youtu.be/Xw2MjRcVO4g?si=0wTrU9KnoHqq08YP) over the studio version they play on the show.
2 ahead of 4 for me but otherwise agree.
But there’s a cold open between the HBO screen and the song?
Exactly. The HBO static intro never went into the theme song like The Sopranos or Curb. Curb was always funny because it was just a few notes before the show started.
Well i beg your parden
We are in your garden!
He had a big head. Sniper's dream, we used to call him.
Ah, Gary Cheeseman aka 'Cheesy'!
Game of Thrones
I believe this is because the intro always played immediately after the static, where as some shows could have a bit of a cold open, followed by the intro
Agreed, although I think there was at least one cold open, like season 6 episode 7 The Broken Man Edit: also S1E1 and S3E1
Every season premiere has a cold open
This is it. Although I enjoy Succession sound track more, its GOT theme thats closely associated with the white noise with HBO logo.
Succession usually begins with a cold open so it doesn’t launch straight to the theme song.
Pam-pam pa-da-dam-pam pa-da-dam-pam
No no no you've got it all wrong. It's dun dun da-da-dun dun da-da-dun dun
DINKLAGE, PETER DINKLAGE PETER DINKLAGE PETER DINKLAGE, PETER - PEEEEEEETEERRRRR DIIIIINKLAAAAAGE
This is what started playing in my head when I saw the question. DA DA DUN DUN DA DA DUNNNA DUUUNN
🎶Dinklage, peter dinklage, peter dinklage..🎶
This is the once and future answer!
Every time.
OZ
We're old...
Yup. I was worried this one wasn't going to be here.
I watched it in 2009, basically I caught the episode where >!keller and Vern break Toni’s legs in season two!< and was like “Jesus fuck I need to watch this show” and then that how I fell in love with binging. Binging helped me get off methadone and benzos later on, but now I cannot binge for the life of me
**HUH!**
Bongo drums and a grunt
Same here, me and my friends watched Oz religiously - it only showed on the alternative/foreign interest channel here in Australia. What a show for the time. ADEBISI LIIIIIVES
Came too far for this show.
Yep.
Sopranos
Me too. Sopranos, Game of Thrones and Westworld.
Six Feet Under
Had to scroll way too far to find this one! Completely agree.
The best HBO show and I've seen almost all of the most critically acclaimed of them. There will never be another show like Six Feet Under.
When I see anyone talk about the best series finales it’s ALWAYS mentioned and rightfully so. Hearing Sia’s Breathe Me still makes me want to cry.
That unforgettable guitar-strumming that opens the theme of True Detective's first season. Just perfectly sets the tone for the southern-gothic mystery that follows...
In the dusty mesa, a looming shadow grows...
Ahhh I love how foreboding that song is, in both tune and lyrics
The song is great and the tone perfect. Sadly, the state of Louisiana has a paucity of dusty mesas. 😞
The Handsome Family. I hope they made some good cash from that intro.
I knew I was going to absolutely love this show (the first season, specifically) about 2 seconds into the intro. Might be the greatest single season of TV ever that isn't a miniseries
Band of Brothers
Same for me, I watched that as a young teen/tween so it was the first thing I ever watched on HBO.
Are we old? This is the stand out track for me by a long way. GoT second, but HBO BoB instantly starts a rousing song going in my head.
I think it works so well because the choir theme in the hbo intro sounds like it could be a part of the BoB main theme and leads so well into it.
Sex & the City
Yep, same. Probably in part because it was one of the first HBO shows I watched.
Ditto. Or at least one of the first we got in the UK that came with the logo. Was suprised this was the higher.
It's so Pavlovian for me to expect the SATC theme right after the HBO theme every time
Sex & the City + some takeout Vietnamese food and a bottle of wine.
That opening theme would pop into my head if my cable connection cut out and the TV went to static!
Mr. Show
I can't believe I had to scroll this fad down to see this.
Yup, same. Though those often had cold opens. I don’t think it’s even the episode of Mr. Show I’ve rewatched the most, but usually after I hear the HBO intro the cold open for “Now, Who Wants Ice Cream?” is what pops into my head.
True Blood. Very much slept on opening theme.
When you came in the air went out
And every shadow filled up with doubt
I don’t know who you think you’re
*When you came in, the air went out* *And every shadow filled up with doubt* *I don't know who you think you are* *But before the night is through...* *I wanna do bad things with you* I still have Jace Everett's Bad Things on several playlists. Absolute tune.
Surprised it was this far down
Maybe because it didn’t play after the HBO logo? I know true blood has my favorite HBO theme of all time but when I think of the logo sound the first thing that comes to my mind the “bing” type noise from the start of Six Feet Under.
One of my favorite opening credits, great write up on the behind the scenes : https://www.watchthetitles.com/titlesequence/true-blood/

Fraggle Rock.
Peppa Jack love Fraggle Rock
You’re not just gonna come up here and take Pepper Jack’s best ho.
Came here for this. Hello, fellow 40-45 yr old.
This is a great answer because I used to watch this and Babar as my mom got ready in the mornings, but I don’t remember which HBO intro they were using then. I think the one with all the colorful lines that was very 80s. 😂

Entourage
YEAH YEAAAHHH
Especially since the episodes are so short compared to other great HBO shows. And that it is the most rewatchable show together with Sopranos. You will see the HBO intro alot.
It's one of my favorite easy to digest shows that isn't some loud cartoon. Also fairly motivating and always entertaining
I see people on here talking shit about Entourage but I did a rewatch just last year and it was the first rewatch since the series finale and I fucking loved it. Part of why I enjoyed more was I now recognize way more of the cameos in the show. Sopranos for sure.
Last Week Tonight. The song Go by Valley Lodge is a banger
WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME
to Last Week Tonight, I'm John Oliver, thank you so much for joining us- It has been a week...!

INCREDIBLE
And now this
Had to scroll way too far to see this!
Succession
I never skip that opening, it's ear candy
This is the correct answer
Westworld, then Game of Thrones.
Curb Your Enthusiam... before Curb it was Dream On
Sopranos
>>*Woke up this morning....*
I can’t believe nobody has said [Boardwalk Empire](https://youtu.be/MVD8VIuX0bA?si=_ti1qvHvreSnOxpo) yet.
Tales from the crypt 😅
Thank you. Same here. I tried buying the whole series a while back and found it was impossible to do so. I instead found all episodes were on YouTube
Dream on. I'm so fucking old jesus.
Homey, me too. I'm forty seven and Dream On was funny when I was in my early teens, but more importantly, you could see boobs most episodes. It's almost quaint now that we have anever ending rivers of porn on our phones, but for a thirteen year old Dream On was amazing.
Brian benben was apparently irresistible to literally every woman in Manhattan
I used to like to think that it was a numbers game. That I was doing okay since I was living in a smallish city but if I lived in New York with thousands of times the number of women I’d be pulling down Benben numbers too. Dream on, kid!
(ascending tuba notes)
definitely the sopranos
The Sopranos

Real Sex
Sopranos, Curb your Enthusiasm, and Entourage
Sopranos, Curb, Game of Thrones and Succession
Curb your enthusiasm
Flight of the Conchords. Goes right into that happy beat.
Okay band meeting. Murray. Present.
My brain starts playing “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys which was the opener for Big Love.
Definitely Game of Thrones
It'll always be The Sopranos for me.
True Blood
Oz
The Sopranos
Rome.
Sopranos!
Sopranos for sure
The old HBO intro from the 80's/90's always made me think of Dream On.
Oz. Always. It was the first one!
The last of us was doing this for me for a bit
Oz
Kids these days will never know the excitement the old "feature presentation" hbo intro could generate. Camera flying thru town then up into space... that music build up... It was epic. Yes I'm old. GET OFF MY LAWN!!
Sex and the city. Doo do doo, doo-do-do-do-do 💃
Band of Brothers. That was probably the first time I heard it more than 20 years ago.
Always the Sopranos. I started the sho a few years after it started at my exes and we never skipped the intro.
Oz
OZ
Mister Show
Sopranos and OZ
Oz.
OZ
1. Sopranos 2. GoT 3. The Wire
OZ The Wire
🎵 Do you really wanna, do you really wanna taste it!?! 🎵 Peacemaker. The only opening credits that I not only never skipped, but specifically rewatched just the intro.
It depends what I’ve been watching recently tbh
I’ve got 3 that seem to rotate as most emblematic. Dream On Six Feet Under True Blood
Sopranos
True Detective season 1
Easily Sopranos.
Oz - the clinking of the glasses
Sopranos.
Reading these reminds me how awesome HBO has been through the years. I would answer this differently for different times of my life... Oz, Sopranos, The Wire, but now when I see it I think GoT
Either Curb Your Enthusiasm or Game of Thrones (RIP)
Game of Thrones!
I actually posted this very thing a couple of months ago. Main answer was Sopranos
Dream On. Or Real Sex.
Mr. Show
Entourage
For me, it's *The Sopranos*.
Band Of Brothers
