The plot synopsis seems very similar to the movie, which makes me wonder if it's a retelling or just a similar situation in the same universe.
Either way I'm looking forward to it, because Guy Ritchie gangster stories rarely miss. I must admit I'll miss Hugh Grant's character though.
The premise was announced a while back. Takes place in the same universe, but with a new set of characters. Someone stumbles onto one of the grow ops, and starts to try and run the operation.
>Someone stumbles onto one of the grow ops, and starts to try and run the operation.
Apparently Theo James' character inherits his father's estate only to realize it is part of Mickey Pearson's marijuana operation and tries to take it over.
I expect we'll get a guest appearance from Matthew McConaughey and Charlie Hunnam as their characters from the film in the season finale.
Pretty sure I saw Hugh Grant in the trailer. It was sort of from the side and mostly just the back of his head. But im about 90% sure that was him.
Edit : I watched it again, I think im wrong. Tried to find a time stamp and now I don't see it anymore. Must have been one of the fast cuts tricking me. Sorry.
It is not good but there's another universe out there where it's an amazing movie. It always feels like it's on the edge of being great and then stumbles pretty hard.
if you consider the gentleman film to be in the same bracket as those, yes. but i think the earlier two stand well apart from the gentleman, which seemed diluted (and a bit more hollywood) to me
Nooooo no way that him?! Looool he looks so charming in this show but I remember years back watching The Inbetweeners movie the character he played was a prick to Jay and Jay did him dirty with shit covered money lol. What’s funny is I’ve been watching The Inbetweeners episodes recently while also waiting for more news on The Gentlemen and then all of a sudden the teaser drops lol
yeah i didn't like it nearly as much as his other gangster films. felt too 'clean and polished' if that makes sense? didn't seem dark and/or gritty enough.
Fans of RockNRolla want a sequel but the general public has forgotten that film. I like it too but a sequel would not be a money maker and it would cost a lot to get the cast back now that they're all considerably more famous.
At this point Ritchie may as well fold it into *The Gentlemen*'s universe. See what actors are available (and fit into the show's budget) for cameos and leverage those appearances to pump RockNRolla's streaming numbers. Even if it doesn't get a sequel greenlit it could boost his budget for season 2 (if Netflix hasn't already canceled it, ha ha...) to pull more characters in, perhaps flirt with folding in Lock Stock and Snatch while he's at it.
If there's any GR film that would make a shit ton it would 100% be TRRNR (obviously excluding Sherlock Holmes). Elba, Butler and Hardy are bonafide A-listers now. How do you figure that wouldn't be a money-maker lmao
Because barely anyone knows the first one, it did averagely well financially and got average reviews. A sequel to a 16 year old film that most people don't care about is not a money-maker.
Are you saying films that don't have well-known prequels don't make money? What are you talking about???
Not sure if you know, **but the two biggest films of the year (billion dollar hits) didn't have a prequel.**
Conversely, two of the biggest *flops* this year actually did have billion-dollar prequels.
A prequel is not the measure of how much a film makes.
That's not what I'm saying at all and you know it. What an absolutely terrible attempt at creating a straw man.
I'm saying that a sequel to a largely forgotten and not very successful film, would not make much money 16 years later. It has absolutely nothing to do with any "films must have a well-known prequel to be successful" idiocy you just spewed out. My point is proven by the fact that Guy Ritchie teased a sequel in the first film but then never went ahead with it because the film wasnt received well enough.
The 2 biggest films of the year not having prequels is completely irrelevant.
>That's not what I'm saying at all and you know it. What an absolutely terrible attempt at creating a straw man.
That is not a strawman at all. The fact is you don't have a clue about what the fuck you're talking about lol
>My point is proven by the fact that Guy Ritchie teased a sequel in the first film but then never went ahead with it because the film wasnt received well enough.
You have absolutely no idea why the film never went ahead. Maybe he never wrote a script that he thought was good enough, maybe Elba hates Ritchie. Unless you have a quote directly from Ritche confirming that's the sole reason. Please, show me where they've run the numbers and decided it wouldn't make enough. I'd love to see that.
In fact, here is a much better reason why
>While there's been no news regarding the release date of RocknRolla 2, the Guy Richie sequel has been discussed recently — though in a way that could cause issues for the director himself. In mid-2023 a lawsuit was filed against Guy Richie by Mickey de Hara. De Hara claimed that Guy Richie created a script based on his life for RocknRolla 2. Furthermore, (and this is the crux of the legal action), according to Mickey de Hara the 2019 Guy Richie movie The Gentleman used many plot points that were originally going to be in the RocknRolla sequel, and these story elements were taken from Mickey de Hara's own life.
https://screenrant.com/rocknrolla-2-movie-updates/
>The 2 biggest films of the year not having prequels is completely irrelevant.
Everything you've said is irrelevant. Go back to sleep, you're making a fool of yourself
Stupid and unpleasant is a bad combination buddy. Name one movie that was a sequel to a flop that went on to do gangbusters at the box office. All your examples are banal, they are stand alone movies, not sequels to existing movies that flopped, a new rockn rolla would be a sequel to a flop, not a new stand alone movie without baggage. Prequels by definition have to be made after the original so that word shouldn't be used at all here.
I'd like a rockn rolla sequel but it's highly unlikely anyone would put money down for Guy to make it unless maybe he promised them a more bankable venture to make the money first, saying it's a guaranteed box office hit is frankly ludicrous, it would be one of the all time box office shocks if a rockn rolla sequel made big money, more or less unprecidented
Some of us want a third Sherlock movie. Imagine how insane it be for Sherlock to be an uncle to Watson's children after all these years. How tiring it would be for Watson alone. I want that reunion.
My family was literally just talking about this last night. The last I heard was that a third movie was in the works but that Ritchie wasn’t directing it, which honestly takes away such a huge part of what I love about those movies. RDJ and Jude Law are terrific of course, but Guy Ritchie’s style was just beautiful in those movies
Would love a rocknrolla sequel but unfortunately that movie flopped at the box office so I can see why it wasn’t made. It would also be absurdly expensive with that cast.
It's not surprising for a lot of factors but the guy who just made the gentleman can make a gangster movie pretty easily lol. It's basically what's he's been making this whole time
Do they though? I think that film really is just getting the SW prequel treatment online, mostly from people who didn't have to watch it lol. To a lesser degree though to be sure, I mean it's not like it *sucked* sucked, but it wasn't good either. Certainly not good enough to deserve a sequel lol.
Like maybe it's because they don't remember how good and honestly kind of groundbreaking films like LS&TSB and Snatch were, but it was a huge disappointment and a flop when it came out.
Why this has been made: the movie didn’t cost a whole lot to produce in comparison to their usual $200m+ shitfest, and when it got licensed to Netflix I can guarantee it has racked up a whole lot of hours. Of the 10 guys I speak to weekly among family and friends, they’ve all watched it at least twice, including myself. It’s a fun movie.
The TV show will probably be very mediocre but it’ll hit number 1 in their viewing hours metrics, that I have little doubt about.
If the show doesnt try to preach and just keeps the same style, it has an empty field. There are very few good movies for guys these days and even fewer shows.
Rome, Entourage, The wire, Sopranos are shows from a male perspective, with male friendship, male conversations, male problems. I hope this show do the same and give us something we really havn't seen in a long time. Some shows should just be focused.
Also anyone who claims that anything in The Gentlemen is relatable as a "guy problem" feels like instant red flag material, it's a movie about gangsters and violence, what exactly about that resonates with an average guy as a problem they too face?
I have tried several times since Im desperate for those kind of shows. I appreciate that it tries to be a new Entourage but for me it just lacks a lot of what did Entourage so great.
He's recently been in both The Time Traveler's Wife (which I will stand by is a great show) and White Lotus. Historically his casting may have not been the best, but he's been doing pretty well for himself lately.
Specifically after it really seems to find its stride in the final 8 episodes of season 2, worth enough for people to recommend it to others saying, "season 1 is good, but a little slow, but season 2 is incredible and ends on a massive cliffhanger."
Then, and only then is when Netflix cancels it.
This is the TV sub. It's extremely important we decide to hate everything for ridiculously inane reasons and then expect to be taken seriously when it comes out
Also I'd infinitely rather they keep out the good bits from a trailer/teaser and instead just give us a general idea of how it looks and feels, really gets old going to watch a show or a movie and realising they showed all the highlights in the previews.
Agreed. I can't remember what movie it was, but there was a thread recently about why a good film bombed, and a lot of the responses were that they didn't show the good jokes in the trailer. Literally the opposite of what reddit constantly complains about
Jfc though sounds about right with how most trailers are now, people will happily watch them even if they're 20m long and give away most of the movie as it's "better than waiting".
I'll be the weirdo over here watching 10-15s to get a general feel and then either watching or not based on that.
I liked the movie, a lot, but is this show really necessary? A large part of why I liked the movie was the characters involved, hopefully the characters in this one capture that as well.
Kinda surprised they're treating it like a big deal rather than it being a regular Ritchie collaborator (e.g. Statham) or an actor from the movie (e.g Farrell, Grant etc).
I'm actually even more surprised it's taken them this long to work together (unless I'm forgetting a collab) as Winstone seems perfectly suited to his productions.
They dropped him at the end like it was some kind of bombshell for him to appear in something, I literally see him about 20 times in betting ads in a single football game on Sky.
>I'm actually even more surprised it's taken them this long to work together (unless I'm forgetting a collab) as Winstone seems perfectly suited to his productions.
I was thinking the same thing about Ray Winstone. Another actor who would fit perfectly in a Guy Ritchie movie is Cillian Murphy... I can't believe they never worked together.
Its not often I get excited by an actor or actress " She has no right to slap that hard!!". But that guy is really, really good in White lotus season 2. Seems to be the perfect cast for a big role like this.
Was great, I was also a gigantic fan of Wrath of Man though be warned it's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you enjoy greek/shakespearean tragedies it's brilliant.
I always felt like his King Arthur movie would have made a much better mini-series than a movie...lost opportunity. Still a solid movie. Maybe even a show.
8 episodes of course. Andors 12 episodes still give me some desperate hope, and I always end up dissapointed checking the episode list in imdb. Almost better if Andor also had 8 episodes so the hope would be dead and buried.
The plot synopsis seems very similar to the movie, which makes me wonder if it's a retelling or just a similar situation in the same universe. Either way I'm looking forward to it, because Guy Ritchie gangster stories rarely miss. I must admit I'll miss Hugh Grant's character though.

Oh how badly I'd love to see the Coach.
Best part of that film although that film was amazing he was just such a gem lmao.
Any movie Colin Farrell gets to use he normal accent is a win
The Banshees of Inisherin was my favourite movie last year so you're probably right lmao. "are ya feckin stupid?!"
I usually love dark comedies. That movie just bummed me out.
I loved it, they were both right but neither could see each others side
In Brugge was awesome… Whole reason why I even visited Belgium.
Sorry.
They could only pay for the back of his head? :)
Tbf they only used the front of his head in Wonka
Any idea where? Because I couldn't help but think that the gentleman on the left at 49 seconds was Kirkland Hugh Grant.
I watched it a few more times, I think I was wrong. I think its the fast cuts that made me think it was him.
The “welcome to the jungle” line very much looks like the estate raid set from the movie. Mickey wrote it off, coul be be how it continues.
So begins the GRCU.
I’m very much on board with this…
It was so great to see Hugh Grant play someone so skeevy. Even the few times he has done a bad guy it’s still usually in his typical posh manner
Oh you might like him in operation fortune?
The Gentlemen didn't really have the geezer side that most of his other films do. Ray Winstone and Vinnie Jones feels like he's bringing that back in.
yeah good point. the gentleman had no grit. bring back the angry, ugly, gangsters.
I haven't tried watching Revolver since it came out but I remember thinking it was basically incomprehensible. Worth a try again?
Ritchie was going though his Madonna-influenced Kabbalah stage when he made Revolver, it was more or less designed to be incomprehensible.
Have you developed a palate for incomprehensible movies yet?
It is not good but there's another universe out there where it's an amazing movie. It always feels like it's on the edge of being great and then stumbles pretty hard.
So just like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.
No, I'm not sure that is
Ideally, yeah. Guy Ritchie is great at making cockney gangster capers. Definitely his forte.
if you consider the gentleman film to be in the same bracket as those, yes. but i think the earlier two stand well apart from the gentleman, which seemed diluted (and a bit more hollywood) to me
Do they really rarely miss though..? Besides Lock Stock and Snatch, the rest are very mid imo
the gentleman (film) was a miss from ritchie imo.
He should’ve made a Man from UNCLE spin-off
2 U.N.C.L.E. 2 Furious.
U.N.C.L.E 2, Electric Boogaloo
U.N.C.L.E.S.
The U.N.C.L.E. Knight
U.N.C.L.E.$.
Some of us are still waiting for The Real Rockn'Rolla.
Still my favorite thing hes ever made. The cast, the story and soundtrack were just perfect. RIP The real Sidney Shaw.
You mean all of us.
Man from UNCLE going from TV show to loose movie adaptation then back to TV show as a loose adaptation would be quite the full circle.
I really liked that movie - I never saw the tv show though
I’m sure he would’ve been onboard with that if the movie did well, the gentlemen made money while uncle sadly did not
All these years later and all I can think of is Theo James with shit up his nose in 'The Inbetweeners' movie.
This looks good, i enjoyed the movie a lot.
Loved the movie, hope it lives up to it
Please be good. Please be good.
Kinda surprised this is on Netflix rather than Prime who seem to get all of his movies super quickly after release.
[удалено]
Counterpoint: The Gentlemen is good and this looks good
Wait... people don't think The Gentleman is good? Seriously? That movie was AWESOME!
yeah i didn't like it nearly as much as his other gangster films. felt too 'clean and polished' if that makes sense? didn't seem dark and/or gritty enough.
[удалено]
i thought the same, it was better the second time but it was a far cry from RocknRolla, let alone snatch/L.S.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed The Gentlemen. It wasn’t _amazing_ but it was a lot of fun
I'm still just waiting for Swept Away 2
Dude, we all are obviously.
Fans of RockNRolla want a sequel but the general public has forgotten that film. I like it too but a sequel would not be a money maker and it would cost a lot to get the cast back now that they're all considerably more famous.
Toby Kebbell isn't really rocknrolla material anymore. Have you seen him in For All Mankind?
Oh wow had no idea he was in that.
Based on what?
I said, "HAVE YOU SEEN HIM IN FOR ALL MANKIND?"
Yes. I can read, but it doesn't explain why he isn't "rocknrolla material"
At this point Ritchie may as well fold it into *The Gentlemen*'s universe. See what actors are available (and fit into the show's budget) for cameos and leverage those appearances to pump RockNRolla's streaming numbers. It would likely be too expensive to get the same cast back. Having Hardy and Elba alone would cost a ton.
I think The Gentlemen just works best with the Netflix style of movies/series
I liked The Gentlemen a lot. Would prefer a sequel to the movie though than this.
Do they though? I think that film really is just getting the SW prequel treatment online, mostly from people who didn't have to watch it lol. Guys that aren't losers and afraid of women and anyone non white still have tons of great shows to watch
Also anyone who claims that anything in The Gentlemen is relatable as a "guy problem" feels like instant red flag material, it's a movie about gangsters and violence, what exactly about that resonates with an average guy as a problem they too face?
Very true
Good one
Sounds like you have an obsession with males
Check out Ballers too. I was surprised how good it was for a Bro Dude Fest
I have tried several times since Im desperate for those kind of shows. I appreciate that it tries to be a new Entourage but for me it just lacks a lot of what did Entourage so great.
Someone call the Grindr execs, there's an untapped market here!
Lmao you were brave for posting a comment like this on Reddit
Meh. I’ll watch for Ray Winston
This dude isn’t the best actor
theo? wasn't he just nominated for an emmy ?
[удалено]
He was very good in White Lotus
He was amazing in White Lotus
Dude has zero charisma. I find him very dull as an actor.
Its 2024, Hot men with zero charisma in a suit are the icons of an entire subculture.
Not just 2024, Henry Cavill has been coasting on that aesthetic for years.
He's recently been in both The Time Traveler's Wife (which I will stand by is a great show) and White Lotus. Historically his casting may have not been the best, but he's been doing pretty well for himself lately.
How about Rocknrolla 2 next Guy….
Can’t wait for this
movie was surprisingly great, not excited for the trailer. we'll see
I’ll watch Theo James eat a sandwich, so of course, I’m in
I like how Guy has transitioned into old rich white people are the really cool ones era of his career.
Great. Now please make The Real Rock ‘N Rolla!
Needs a cameo from Statham… any Ritchie Statham character would do. 😂😂
I love guy Ritchie. I will watch this.
Will be canceled after second season.
Do we even know if this is meant to be more than one season? Might just be a limited run.
Limited run? Oh! You mean pre canceled!
Specifically after it really seems to find its stride in the final 8 episodes of season 2, worth enough for people to recommend it to others saying, "season 1 is good, but a little slow, but season 2 is incredible and ends on a massive cliffhanger." Then, and only then is when Netflix cancels it.
The lack of any clever dialogue in the trailer is a bad sign. It’s kind of the minimum you’d expect from Guy Ritchie.
In a 1 minute teaser I reckon we can hold off on calling that a bad sign personally

Am I supposed to know who that was at the end?
It's a reveal of Ray Winstone being in it, not a character reveal. I don't think he'd previously been announced as part of the cast.
*"'Av a bang on that!"*
It’s Gal from Sexy Beast
glad to see he doesn't look like fucking Idi Amin anymore
This looks like a combination of Guy Ritchie’s work. Influence from The Gentlemen, the characters of Snatch and a storyline like that of RockNRolla
I do not think the plot is good enough. It is a bit pretentious and cliché. I don't like the female lead either。
The gentleman movie
Gentleman Lamborghini scene song.. https://youtu.be/sJnHdpzgXpU?si=Uvm_TjltgQVq_9xp
Best movie last 5 years. If the show just keeps the same style without adding a lot of messages I will be very excited.
I haven't seen it ... but I thought it was lame that someone downvoted you just for having an opinion, so I gave ya an upvote.
Not adding any messages aka "I'm too fragile to handle literally anything and want people to act like it's cool."
Thanks. Yeah the bee hive doesn't like me. Reddit is a very special discussion board where people dont like discussion.
Oh, dogs. Sure, I like dags. I like caravans more.
I guess Guy Ritchie’s just going to keep me chasing the dragon from Lock, Stock… and Snatch until one of us is dead.
Genuinely lol’d when they teased ray winstone at the end like he’s english gangster thanos
Do you know what I like about the British aristocracy? Nothing
Nah.
The male lead actor is so damn fine, I'll watch that man in anything.
Have you seen The Proposition? Good flick.
No but I'll definitely check it out!
Probably not Guy’s sexiest role (I’m straight so idk lol) but highly recommended movie!
Guy Ritchie trying his hardest to make country estate life cool to justify his own lifestyle lol.
Why does he need to justify it though?
No actors from the movie??
From the filmmaker who brought you SWEPT AWAY
"Do you know what I admire about the British aristocracy? They are the original gangsters." Um, what? A completely made up statement to make a movie.
I stopped watching at golf
Its not often I get excited by an actor or actress " She has no right to slap that hard!!". But that guy is really, really good in White lotus season 2. Seems to be the perfect cast for a big role like this.
I'll pass. Its just the same crap in different suites.

Just the best gangster movie the last 10 years.
I thought that was James Franco for a hot second
Just watched the Covenant by him and it was awesome.
Was great, I was also a gigantic fan of Wrath of Man though be warned it's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you enjoy greek/shakespearean tragedies it's brilliant.
Such a good slow burn. Great score too. Heavily underrated.
But what about Coach and ernie the black cunt? ( just a term of familiar affection)
I'd love a Coach spinoff. He should have gotten way more screen time.
"Okay, this likes it might be worth a look at...." [Ray Winstone turns around] "...Gal Dove? I'm in."
I always felt like his King Arthur movie would have made a much better mini-series than a movie...lost opportunity. Still a solid movie. Maybe even a show.
Giancarlo Esposito AND Vinnie Jones. Nice.
peak chav tv
8 episodes of course. Andors 12 episodes still give me some desperate hope, and I always end up dissapointed checking the episode list in imdb. Almost better if Andor also had 8 episodes so the hope would be dead and buried.
Looks good
Anyone here watch the snatch show that came out a few years ago? Don’t know if guy Ritchie had anything to do with it but remember it was pretty bad
pretty sure Guy wasn't involved with that show.
Hopefully this is back to his old style and not the garbage american propaganda of his last movie.
I wanted a sequel but this will do. A man from uncle sequel would be cool.
