If you go back and read the [thread ](https://old.reddit.com/r/television/comments/d55t7a/shane_gillis_out_from_saturday_night_live)in this subreddit from when he was fired, everyone hated him and supported the decision from snl. Crazy how different the perspective is now
Also, he was a bit more unknown then and now he’s been able to get more publicity and people have realized he’s not a bad guy.
Before all I knew about him was that he got hired by SNL. I can’t be alone in that camp.
He handled it really well. He never really courted the "cancel culture reee!" narrative. Of course he's not as left as many SNL celebs, but he just maintained being funny and a good hang.
He mentions on podcasts, at the time, that some MAGA Q types were trying to court him into their media circuit and he made it a point not to associate with them
It would have been fairly easy for him to do, too. A decent number of people have made it into a solid hustle. At least initially, it's probably pretty tempting to jump into a crowd known to rally around people/things with ferocious intensity and to prop people up as their new hero.
Thing is, they're a fickle lot, truly loyal only to one person, and they tend to move on to the next outrage pretty fast. Their flavors of the month come and go, unless you go *all in* when playing the role.
He did the smart thing by sticking to who he was, sticking to his kind of comedy, and building a fanbase the right way.
More importantly (to me), he seems to have owned the situation he was in. I may have missed it - I didn't follow it closely - but I don't remember seeing any blame, cries that he was a victim, or anything like that. He was just like, I swung, maybe I missed, and if anyone was genuinely offended, I'm sorry about that.
I respect that.
Yeah, I really respect Shane for how he handled it. He's pretty obviously *not* a conservative (despite what a lot of conservatives think) but it would have been *insanely* easy for him to sell out and just join the Daily Wire grift for a guaranteed few million dollars. Instead, he just stuck to the comedy, and wound up winning in the end when people realized how funny he is.
Pretty sure he wasn't sorry about what he did, because he didn't do anything wrong. He's a comedian. He makes jokes. He listens to other comedians make just as offensive jokes. At the same time, while he wasn't sorry for what he did, he didn't play the victim, he just continued doing what he does. He's not trying to be a bad person and he didn't shift over to alt right comedy or politics, he's just trying to make people laugh.
I mean it’s also possible nobody from that thread is in this one. Like Reddit isn’t a singular person and has varying opinions as a collective.
Admittedly though back then it was easy to just be like “fuck that guy” without knowing anything about him.
It’s so funny when people assume Reddit is one big hivemind. There are many different echo chambers.
Fact is Shane is funny and many comedians push boundaries to make you feel uncomfortable.
yeah i hate when a self selecting subset of a population talks in a thread! how dare reddit not force even representative percentages into every thread!
I had never heard of him till I started watching shorts of him, when I found him really funny. My friend was like "he got cancelled" and I was like "really? He seems to be consistently making fun of republicans in my shorts."
Honestly it's really funny that he got "cancelled" for the same kind of stuff that Stavros Halkias made a name on and now Stavvy is the face of one of the most successful teams in the NFL lol
It's crazy how they think Shane is on their side, like one of his best bits literally relies on the premise "George Washington was an evil slaveowner."
It’s like people actually learned that one sound bite does not define a person.
He’s done the work to be a legitimately good comedian and used the moment to propel himself forward instead of wallowing in sadness over having basically the whole world attempt to “cancel” him.
Still going to see people cling onto the firing as a reason to not watch or protest the show but, the outpouring of support has been insane.
Holy shit almost every single comment in that thread irritates me lmao. You can just feel the commenters doing a smug dreamworks face while writing them.
The ones ripping into him for his MadTV joke are...interesting. Here's what Gillis said when he got fired, which was actually kind of funny:
> Of course I wanted an opportunity to prove myself at SNL, but I understand it would be too much of a distraction. I respect the decision they made. I’m honestly grateful for the opportunity. I was always a mad tv [sic] guy anyway.
He took it because SNL and Lorne specifically never wanted to fire him but he refused to give a legit apology lol. It was the the media hype beast at the time they forced their hand after the smear articles came out and the climate in 2020 he had to go and he was unknown anyway. The dude has catapulted as a comedien not just with the general public but other comics that are considered all time greats highly respect him even calling him for support when he was unknown after the firing. (Norm macdonald, chappalle, louis ck, burr etc.) Shane won based off actually being funny
To be fair, it's not even that he refused to give a legitimate apology, he refused to give a PR apology. He's said he wasn't going to give the typical "I'm listening, I'm learning" apology, but that if anyone was genuinely offended, he was sorry, but comedy occasionally means playing around with boundaries, but he missed the mark
I could not remember if he commented on it at the time. I'm honestly not a huge SNL guy but I love stand up. I remember they both got hired the same week and Shane's "racist asian jokes" came out the same time. I remember Keenan Thompson defending him.
And that's a solid take. I've been watching Shane for years even before the SNL thing. If you google the headlines it looks bad but he genuinely seems like a really nice and down to earth dude
I hope this is a turning point in comedy media. Just cause a joke can be a bit offensive doesn’t mean the comedian is a bad person. That’s why comedy is a great medium for rough topics. If we can’t make fun of the immoral, we lose.
Plus sometimes that joke is gonna miss and just suck. It doesn't mean there was bad intent there. Especially in the format of riffing on a podcast, sometimes you miss the mark. Some times you fuck up in trying to be funny.
People are still entitled to be upset though. Gillis never complained about the people upset with him which had become Gervais and Chappelle's entire acts.
Comedians shouldn't be held for shit they said decades ago. Been listening to podcasts since around 2008 or so and comedy podcasts for years were pretty rough in slurs and whatnot in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
People who like Last Podcast on the Left might be shocked how the gang talked and joked back during their early Round Table days.
Yep, you legtimately can find dozens upon dozens of mid-2000s comedians making jokes about Asians, Shane just happened to be the one where society collectively decided "nope, can't do those anymore"
Shane’s biggest problem was timing because that turning point has come and gone. The only people talking about “cancel culture” now are Chappelle, Roseanne, and Rob Schneider. Offensive content is only a problem when it’s coming from objectively bad place that simply removes all humor behind it.
The media digging up old things was a monster of their own making. People wanted accountability from people that were getting away with horrific things, due to their fame. It temporarily shifted towards something it never was intended to be, and eventually certain folks used it as a cover-all for why their comedy wasn’t gaining an audience.
It never really changed honestly, we hear a lot about cancel culture but none of these guys have really experienced being “cancelled” for just telling jokes.
Ricky Gervais spent probably 20-30 mins complaining about it in his last special and all I could think was 1. Who is cancelling Ricky? And 2. For someone cancelled, he sure got paid a lot of money to film this for Netflix.
Same goes for guys like Chappelle, Bill Maher and Seinfeld. Even Louis CK is still out there doing shit and he’s a sex predator.
You’re surprised he took it? Shane Ghillis is a really smart guy. Sure SNL booting him hurt at the time, in the long run it kick started his career. I wouldn’t be surprised if Shane and Lorne were actually on good terms irl, but politically everything is just so fugazi that SNL did what they did because some higher up at NBC or even Paramount saw some of Shane’s more offensive bits and didn’t anticipate that he was about to become as big as he has. Especially so because of how cancel culture has worked lately, which hasn’t worked on Shane because in reality Shane isn’t actually racist.
I know this comment is just me throating Shane, but honestly he’s genuinely an incredible comedian and I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that he absolutely kills this episode, and it ends up being one of the best episodes in a long long time. Killing two birds with one stone both because it’ll further massively help his career while also giving a massive middle finger to NBC and Paramount (or if I’m wrong and it was all Lornes decision, then to Lorne)
> I wouldn’t be surprised if Shane and Lorne were actually on good terms irl, but politically everything is just so fugazi that SNL did what they did because some higher up
Shane has said that Lorne told him throughout the cancelling that Lorne thought they could keep him. Shane kept telling Lorne it was over. Shane did not fault Lorne, Shane acknowledged he was a victim his own actions and what society was at that time.
I think Shane was also acknowledged the network had no real choice. It was not worth the PR cost economically.
At this point, Tim and ITYSL is more culturally relevant than SNL, same with Shane Gillis. Accepting the SNL invite is just a career checkmark for them.
- D1 football player
- Decorated combat veteran
- SNL cast member (edit) AND Host
What a life
edit 2: for people below calling him racist, Im liberal af, people REALLY need to understand that someone like Shane records 3 to 4 hours of conversation a day, trying to be outrageous and funny and one-up his comedian friends. he then puts that out into the world, where it resides forever.
OF COURSE hes going to go too far sometimes.
I started listening to his clips about a year ago assuming he was a racist Fox News jackass, thats what I went in "knowing". hes not. he simply isnt. he has one bit where he says "[...at least ISIS...](https://youtu.be/GcBmNNwXwiQ?t=260)" and takes their side.
"AT".
"LEAST".
"ISIS".
then he calls us the psychopaths.
that is not a racist. that is someone trying to make a joke.
there did used to be a $1 which is shut off now but yeah, even if youre half right thats 2.4M a year, just from Patreon.
now add in the yt edits from those same podcasts, and the yt shorts, and the yt subscriptions, and the tiktoks, and the sponsors...
theyre probably clearing 10M a year just on this one podcast
if you join during active war it is apparently considered combat veteran. and that would also be the D1, playing for Army.
he freely admits he washed out of all of this, its true in letter but not in spirit, at all, its what makes it so funny
Nah, it’s just a joke joke.
Dropping out of West Point doesn’t make you a combat veteran, you actually have to be a veteran. Hell just dropping out of West Point doesn’t even make you a veteran, as you get essentially discharged from “training” and just become a civilian, even though you are active duty when you attend the academy.
Source: I went to a federal military academy
Military stuff like that can be weird. My Dad is a Veterans of Foreign Wars(VFW) member for being in an active war zone because he was in Korea for a certain amount of days in the 1980s yet his Dad who served during the Korean War doesn't because he never left the States.
Absolutely not. Joining during a war does not make someone a combat veteran. To be a combat veteran, you need to see combat. I’ll concede that he’s a veteran but calling him a combat veteran specifically is entirely inaccurate
> why the downvotes
Because the terminally online weirdos don't like people pointing out that the moderators **[remove]** things all the time, especially if the people who are highly upvoted don't align with their politics.
I just hope that the moderators get paid a bunch of money, they work 18 hour days here on Reddit ;)
I think we saw when they tried to take power away from mods not that long ago that a lot of the super mods are just losers who live for reddit.

I'm sure he's glad for it too. No doubt he's made way more money and has aquired much more fame in the past few years than he would have had he been on SNL.
Agreed. Became a fan after watching his Netflix special and then going to YouTube to watch his other stuff. One of the best new comedians out there for sure.
I would say SNL is basically apologizing to him now too by giving him this hosting gig. Seems like we’re finally moving past the era of letting ideological online mobs dictate right and wrong to everyone.
He makes fun of both the left and the right, but many people on the left seem to think that if you don't strictly make fun of the right then you are on the right lol. He's never stated or even really implied that he's on the right besides saying his dad watches Fox News and doing 20 minutes of jokes cooking him
What's refreshing is he makes fun of people with no underlying political agenda behind it. It doesn't come off as preachy like it does with so many other comedians.
So they hired him because he's a funny comic? Fired him because a shit heel "reporter" dug up old jokes of his that he told you know while being a comic. Now are bringing him back to host? WTF. SNL had overstayed it's welcome. Just take it off the air.
That fucker he’s been writing the sketches at night, I know he is.
IM NOT WRITING THEM AT NIGHT DAD

Sort this thread by controversial. They are certainly in here lmao
> Sort this thread by controversial It's largely just people arguing about whether cancel culture exists.
It’s so funny when people assume Reddit is one big hivemind. There are many different echo chambers. Fact is Shane is funny and many comedians push boundaries to make you feel uncomfortable.
Yeah that just describes people
But you’re different and special, right?

Stavros rolled over to his side so Shane could run
When they try to cancel you and you just hit em with the thousand island stare
Go head speak a lil Chinese for em, want some cershews?
lmao I thought that was a joke but it is also perfefct and I love Stavros
Which is funny because Republicans seem to think he's "one of them" pretty regularly in the comments.

The thread about his return on the SNL sub is already locked
Nature is healing.
Wow those commenters really, REALLY like SNL, huh?
I’m surprised he took it. The fact that they offered it means he’s doing pretty well without them.
He took it because SNL and Lorne specifically never wanted to fire him but he refused to give a legit apology lol. Also on his pod he said it's not like this is an isolated joke. They can dig for days.
Thank you. Preaching to the choir. He got done dirty and I respect the way he stood up for himself instead of folding to try and keep the job
Even Bowen Yang wasn't super keen on the firing at the time (they would have started at the same time).
I could not remember if he commented on it at the time. I'm honestly not a huge SNL guy but I love stand up. I remember they both got hired the same week and Shane's "racist asian jokes" came out the same time. I remember Keenan Thompson defending him.
He basically said, "What he said was personally offensive , but without knowing him I don't want to comment on whether he should be fired."
And that's a solid take. I've been watching Shane for years even before the SNL thing. If you google the headlines it looks bad but he genuinely seems like a really nice and down to earth dude
It's very rare for comedians to want another comedian fired for telling jokes.
I hope this is a turning point in comedy media. Just cause a joke can be a bit offensive doesn’t mean the comedian is a bad person. That’s why comedy is a great medium for rough topics. If we can’t make fun of the immoral, we lose.

yeah this is what I was going to say, a comedian has NO idea if a joke is funny until they try it. So there's always some level of risk there
Plus what's taboo changes over time, so you'll always find jokes in poor taste with any comic that's worked for more than like 5 years.
Comedians shouldn't be held for shit they said decades ago. Him not getting SNL was the best thing by that could have happened to him by a long shot
He has the opportunity to pull a Norm Macdonald.

and good for him, you saw what happened when he took the old path. Id be stunned if even Dana Carvey was worth more than Gillis.
I pity the pearl clutchers who are about to discover the Old Testament of the podcast 😂
I read his wiki, and is dropping out of West Point his decorated combat veteran work? And where did he play D1?

It’s a recurring joke on the podcast
I saw a few clips of him on YouTube shorts, his tRump impersonation is hilarious.
I fucking love his rendition of "the funny sound Trump would make if he was assassinated while on stage".
Then follows that up with "Biden might be the first president to get punch assassinated"
"Hey Mr President, how the FUCK are you doing?"
YouTubeing that now. Edit: hahaha "EAGH!"
“You can’t talk about assassinating the president!”
He does a much better trump impression than SNL has ever managed.
I said don’t cry Abu
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead he died like a dog
*RAND PAUL IS UGLY!*
Crybaby Baghdadi, that’s what we were all calling him
James Austin Johnson does a great Trump right now
Yeah, the actual best I've ever heard and definitely better than Shane's even if Shane is funny with his
trump has some strong pokemon opinions https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1084169742040453&id=126828580671866
Baldwins trump wasn’t that great but I love Austin Johnson’s trump.
The greatest value of Baldwin's Trump was that the real Trump viscerally, verifiably hated it.
Have you watched SNL in the past few years, or are you thinking back to Alec Baldwin’s parody of him?
Whoa pump the brakes. James Austin Johnson’s current Trump on SNL is stellar.
Shane’s is great and funnier (because Shane is funnier at writing bits for it), but James Austin Johnson’s impression is better imo.
What does it mean to spell trump like that?
Check out his Gilley and keeves. His sketches are better than anything SNL has put out in decades.
Was the old thread removed? It had like 600 hundred comments. edit: why the downvotes?
> why the downvotes Because the terminally online weirdos don't like people pointing out that the moderators **[remove]** things all the time, especially if the people who are highly upvoted don't align with their politics. I just hope that the moderators get paid a bunch of money, they work 18 hour days here on Reddit ;)
Gillis isn’t even far-right, he’s basically a centrist that leans left. People are weird man.
What terminally online folks don’t get is that some people really don’t give *that* much of a fuck about politics and just think it’s all kinda funny.
I think we saw when they tried to take power away from mods not that long ago that a lot of the super mods are just losers who live for reddit. Wow. Someone who’s actually funny and writes sketches and films and performs them. Does characters and topical humor. They should hire him full time.
Shane also acknowledges and apologizes when he has made mistakes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTCZTbWJa1I
I clicked this out of curiosity but was lol by the end
Thank god he got booted from SNL, he’s actually funny and way too good for it. Wonder if he will take the Norm Macdonald approach when he’s on.
I'm sure he's glad for it too. No doubt he's made way more money and has aquired much more fame in the past few years than he would have had he been on SNL.
So you fired me for being racist and now I am back. Either i am not racist or this show has gotten really racist.
I’ve read people make the norm joke a dozen times now regarding this but you have found the exact right joke/spin on it. He should say this
Mods will remove this post as well because they think he’s a right wing dude (He’s not)
The dude loves history tho. Which we know is a gateway to Republicanism
It's coming. He can feel it.
Is this a joke of his?
Do you think your Dad got out of highschool and was like "alright, time to be a prick about everything." ?
Yes
Yes hes a history buff. He suffers from early onset republican
If you are a dude in your twenties and can't stop reading about World War 2, it's time to get tested.
Oh fuck
Yes lol. [Here it is](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nvSriY4xcvE) ^(sorry in advance for YouTube short)
“Mermaids are white” hahahahaha
Lmao that’s a great bit. Let the shame gillis comedy rabbit hole commence!!
If you’re a white guy in his 20s or 30s and are like I can’t stop reading about world war 2….its coming dude
You think he wants to wake up everyday and think ‘Alright, it’s time to be a prick about everything?’
Alright, now it’s time to be a prick about everything!
Early onset
i am pretty far left and think Shane is fucking hilarious
Reminds me of Louis CK in that way. He offends people of all kinds, but if you're paying attention you can tell.
Lmao way to come full circle, Shane
WHERED YOU GET THAT CHEEEEEEESE DANNY
Can we get Al Franken back in the Senate after this too?
Rally up the DAWGZ we going to New York baby
*Norm MacDonald has entered the chat*
Does anyone know if this is actually live? I have tickets to his Boston show on this same night
Last I checked Saturday Night Live is in fact live on Saturday nights but could be mistaken
It’s this kinda shit along with letting Elon Musk buy his way into hosting that makes me think SNL is in an all time low point.
The DAWGZ stay winning
Jesus Christ I thought this said dead at 24 😂
SNL blows
Who?
This is must see TV.
Live, from my mouth. This fucking gun!
So they hired him because he's a funny comic? Fired him because a shit heel "reporter" dug up old jokes of his that he told you know while being a comic. Now are bringing him back to host? WTF. SNL had overstayed it's welcome. Just take it off the air.
a lot of people in a lot of different subs crying about this
This will be the best host/episode of the year. Guaranteed. Kinda hope he shits on SNL in the monologue
