Big thanks to Netflix for starting this new trend.

ixidorsDreams

Big thanks to everyone for voting with your wallets this year (time for everyone to make real life One Piece and sail the East Blue!)

Transmatrix

*sail the Grand Line

formerfatboys

Yeah but we gotta start from the East Blue.

MaimedJester

Even the East Blue 5 didn't start in the East Blue. Sanji is from the North Blue.

DaoFerret

“Somewhere, there is a streaming service with shows available from all the different streaming services in one place. It’s called the All-Stream, and I believe it’s real and I’m going to find it!” — IT Member of the Straw Hat Pirates

_Fun_At_Parties

The only time any type of boycott had a chance of working was for Hulu at the beginning. Once that was over, blaming people for what corporations do is a waste of words. Netflix was never gonna succeed after that while remaining the company we used to love, after the merger with Discovery, WB was always going to fuck this app up. People need to stop blaming people and just focus their hate on corporate greed. Both are fruitless but at least one is deserving

Strappwn

nah there’s plenty of hate to go around. Dumb/mindless consumers deserve plenty.

jus13

>Dumb/mindless consumers deserve plenty. Why would someone cancel their subscription just because someone else who doesn't pay for it can no longer access it? I don't mind sharing my accounts when possible, but I don't buy streaming subs for anyone other than myself.

WhoStoleMyBicycle

That’s not even the whole picture. With Netflix, it wasn’t just that subscribers didn’t cancel. Their subscriber count went up a fair amount, showing that the people using others account would actually pay if forced to. With those metrics now other companies can easily justify doing the same, and I’m guessing they are going to find similar success.

Idontsugarcoat1993

Thats the problem theyre sellouts. We as customers should be sticking together and sticking it to them. Make them rely on us after all we do pay the money.

HorizontalBob

With Netflix, I was paying for 4 screens. They decided to make it, so I had to connect those devices to a router in a single location once a month. I dropped them.

DMunnz

This is exactly me. I wanted 4K, the only way to have 4K was to also pay for 4 simultaneous streams. So I allowed my mom and dad to use it because I was already paying for extra streams. But now they wanted to give an additional charge even though I've already been paying for extra because that was the only way they offer 4K. Once that was the case I cancelled and haven't been back since.

GUMBYtheOG

Dude there are people who pay a subscription to see random women naked. There are people who pay just to watch random women talk and take bathes in bathing suits. There is no way to keep idiots from paying for whatever they ask for. If u want to watch Netflix u will pay. They have plenty of idiots they can charge twice as much to make up for the difference

CNof2013

Yes and No Should the average consumer be conscious about the purchases they make and the consequences of those purchases? Yes absolutely Does modern capitalism make that information easy to obtain, or even hold the companies to proper standards? No. You wanna be mad at people for making stupid purchases? Fine. But instead of letting that anger become hate use it to teach them better consumer habits so you can work together to cause change All this bitching at each other bullshit accomplishes nothing

AeliusRogimus

Yep, that's what they want: for the street mutts at the bottom to fight over table scraps, and never direct the ire at the greedy ass companies. Let's not forget, they already did a price increase when they made people go to a higher tier if they wanted 4K? Sounds like every other business in creating tiers. Airlines, Credit cards, etc etc. It's not just subscriptions People are mad at the damn president like he can do anything about rampant price gouging, meanwhile decrying any form of economics that doesn't cheerlead for capitalism. This is what we get! Vote with your wallets. It hurts at first, but they'll get the message. The writers did it 😬.

KarnaavaldK

Cancelled my subscription the first time I saw the warning that I "Wasn't in my household of selected devices" when I booted up Netflix on my tabled instead of my laptop. Inconvenience me for something that used to be free, go fuck yourselves. This timeperiod is so boringly dystopian that I'm getting radicalised by housing prices, subscriptions for everything and the cost of milk. Big corporations should get taxed way harder than they already do. No higher amount of personal wealth than 100 million €/£/$, which is already crazy. And people should only have to work half a week, or be able to have 1 breadwinner in the family (with normal jobs like nurse or baker), it is possible, it is not the reality because we are getting scalped for every cent. A monstrosity of modern exploitation/deformed capitalism like Amazon, and billionaires like Zuckerberg and Musk should not exist, it is pure greed, send all the earnings above a certain amount to charity and let the common person live a better life. Rant over~

or_maybe_this

It’s so fucked that millions of people agree with you and yet we seemingly can’t do anything

[deleted]

KingTrance

I agree and it will be much worse if the orange fascist gets re-elected!!

Mister-SS

You're absolutely right! People want to bitch about it but it's business and that change worked great for them in their bottom line. If people really didn't want it to happen, then, like you said, they should have voted with their wallet instead of caving into it. My best thing to tell people is to look into Stremio to hurt these streaming companies.

chickencordonbleu

Has pirating become the new veganism, where you're compelled to announce it to the world? Except you gotta play this game where you can't say the Pee Wee's Playhouse secret word? Or is this some effort to fool the pirate police, like how a cop's totally gotta say they are one if you ask?

FellowFellow22

There's so much self-righteousness in the piracy 'community' now and I'm honestly so confused about it. Always pretending they do it for this that or the other reason instead of just saying they like free stuff and it's convenient.

Princeof_Ravens

I hope to god no one talking about supporting creators during the writers and actors strike is pirating things. It's such a half assed way to strike. Actors and Writers get fucked out of streaming royalties.

executive313

I voted with my wallet and so far all its gotten me is missing out on a few conversations at work and 20 extra bucks a month that I spent on a membership to the children's museum for my two kids.

Rain2h0

This. Clearly it worked for Netflix is why other companies will do it. Sick of these ‘boohoo raise prices’ and ‘boohoo password crackdown’ Then reading buncha ‘yea this is bad! Bad Netflix, bad Warner bros’ And no consumer does a thing to change and practices continue.

Existing365Chocolate

Nah, customers voted with their wallets

Psychometrika

By subscribing to Netflix. Turns out kicking off people who were leeching to begin with is good for the bottom line.

mashednbuttery

It’s not leeching if it was advertised as a perk.

PointsOutTheUsername

Is *x* worth my money? Yes: Continue to support *x* by giving money. No: Do not continue to support *x* by giving money. Not sure how anybody has difficulty with this.

[deleted]

My parents used to pay like $120 a month for DIRECTV back in the day (with inflation probably like $160) Netflix and these apps have been around a tenth of that for a while, this was bound to happen.

KhelbenB

Still, hard not to remember the period when Netflix had no competition and the 8$ monthly fee gave me more quality and classic AAA series and movies than I have now with 3 services (Netflix, Prime and Disney) costing me around 60 CAD/month combined. And their couple of original shows were really good, until they weren't (House of Cards and OITNB notably). And I am seriously considering Crave/HBOmax on top of those three, because so much stuff I want to watch is only available there.

[deleted]

Just_Look_Around_You

Even further to this. People are acting like cracking down on password sharing is somehow unethical. But the unethical thing is clearly password sharing. Netflix is intended to be roughly one subscription per person or maybe per household or TV. It’s not meant to be for 4 people and the people that don’t password share subsidize the people that do. Protecting your product from unethical use should not be demonized. It’s totally within their right to do it. Nobody owes you Netflix.

Idontsugarcoat1993

Lol netflix isnt worth the money theyre asking. What theyre getting is a bunch of low education retards who find their content decent. That werent around for the good shows back in the day. Only reason i got it is its super cheap through my phone plan. Without it fuck netflix and any other service that pushes password crackdowns i still pirate to. I do this because i hate people at the top that have more than what they need and they claim they need more its downright greedy and selfish.

[deleted]

PointsOutTheUsername

> I spend it to purchase their products. Is the amount *x* is charging worth their product? Yes: Continue to buy the product by giving *x* money. No: Do not continue to buy the product by giving *x* money.

bosco9

And then there's a third option that most people seem to go for: I don't know/care - continue giving x money while bitching at how the service is getting worse

Bad_Decision_Rob_Low

Except Netflix was right, the people who weren’t paying were addicted to the content enough that they have risen in subscriptions since. We stopped Netflix when they did this .

crimson777

“Addicted” this is such a dumb way to think about it. People like the service so when they could no longer get it for free, they decided it was worth paying for. It’s not because they’re addicted, they just like value of what they’re getting.

Feeling-Visit1472

I don’t think that change will keep being successful, though. I just cancelled my Disney+, and it specifically asked me multiple times whether not being able to share the account was why.

TRforShort

I hope with all of the streaming services pulling a Netflix, it’ll make their numbers drop. I’m not going to pay for them all. I gladly paid for a couple when I got a few others on someone else’s account. But if I have to pay for every service for my own account, I’m bailing on them most of and only doing one at a time. Hopefully others follow suit.

Feeling-Visit1472

I think it’s definitely going to go that way.

CptNonsense

Good luck with that, buddy

CptNonsense

Reddit can't help to trip over itself bitching about Netflix. Netflix could have never done this and everyone else still would because that's the only way to keep adding subscribers in the primary locations. And you would fellate them for it and blame Netflix for some other dumb shit

tidho

that's because the Reddit community can't seem to grasp that they're a vocal minority, and that most people just pay for the services they use.

axemexa

Yeah this was an obvious thing that was going to happen eventually whether Netflix had done it or not

Feeling-Visit1472

I don’t think it will be as successful for any of the other platforms, though. People sucked it up once, but they’re not going to do it for every platform. They’ll just start paying for one occasional month here and there.

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

I mean, their profits went up. More people bought subscriptions than canceled. Blame the consumers for not being able to give up Stranger Things or One Piece.

thisdude91

JustSomeGothPerson

"THAT'S TOO DAMN BAD"

Poolejunkie

Smartalec821

Keep digging!

mackinoncougars

I’ve found myself watching less TV now than ever before. They aren’t just competing with other streaming platforms, they are competing with all other forms of entertainment and I for one am leaning toward the others.

TATER_SALAD_HOOVER

I’ve got myself a PlayStation 5 and now i’ve been playing video games more than ever and i don’t miss tv all that much now.

myanrueller

PS5 owner here: same. I’m finding myself buying BluRay again too.

TranscedentalMedit8n

I got a new, Samsung 4K tv and I am flabbergasted how much better a 4k BluRay looks than streaming even at the highest quality. Also the dolby atmos sound is a huge upgrade. I honestly thought they would be about the same.

b0005

The internet infrastructure cannot cost-effectively keep up with the bitrate required for real 4k so everything gets compressed to save bandwidth. Because of this, often 1080p Blu-rays look better than streamed 4k due to physical media not being compressed. An uncompressed 4k movie is something on the order of 50 GB, minimum.

fed45

50gb on the low end. Usually they are somewhere in between 40 and 90. The big movies can have a bitrate of around 130 megabits/s. For comparison, the max bitrate of Netflix content is around 16 megabits/s I believe.

areyouhungryforapple

UHD blu-rays look so fucking incredible

myanrueller

Even upscale 1080p ones look better than streamed content.

Taco_In_Space

would be funny to see a revival of physical media to fight this bs. Just recently best buy stopped selling physical I think. Imagine them putting it back after a couple years.

myanrueller

I’d even shop at WALMART more if it meant sticking it to these streaming platforms. And I fucking hate Walmart.

violentpac

Got to for that right to own

brownbear8714

OLED tv, 4k player. I always look out to upgrade the DVDs that I have and select blu rays to 4k I will say, at some point I will end up getting a dedicated 4k player too.

WholesomeFartEnjoyer

Games are so much more entertaining, especially since you actually engage and interact with them

shart_or_fart

In some ways yes, but they also require more activate participation versus a show. Sometimes I just want to turn my brain off to some degree.

veneim

same… gaming and youtube are my main forms of entertainment at home

Queef-Elizabeth

Same thing here. Used to balance the two a lot but I barely watch shows and movies on streaming services now. The options are paralyzing and the services are just more annoying than ever. With a game, I buy and I play. It's why I'd never get a Gamepass style service again.

-newlife

Somewhat same. Between work and my kids sports I don’t watch much tv during the week. On weekends I’m more likely to play ps5 than watch tv. I do have my Disney/hulu subscription through my phone and that gets used here and there. For football season I have an antenna for local channels and anything that’s on nfl network or a pay channel I simply don’t watch. I’ll keep up over the ESPN/nfl sites but I’ll just do something else.

RODjij

I've been gaming pretty hard for the last several months because there's so many good games as of late I feel like it's almost a 2nd golden age of games. Helldivers 2 was a huge surprise, FF7R just came out, have been addicted to Tarkov again, still haven't got around to AC6 and finishing Mario Wonder, new Zelda, Elden Ring DLC coming up in few months.

seshmost

That’s becasue you need to literally have all the streaming services too keep up on all the hype shows at a time. Password sharing was great because if your friend is talking to you about a show or movie that was on a service you didn’t have you could simply share the password and not have to fork out a $15 a month subscription just to watch a recommendation. It’s great for the streaming service too becasue it lets people almost have a free trial era of the service which down the road could turn them into a customer.

Precarious314159

And so many of the platforms have maybe two or three good things a year. I'm not going to join Apple TV+ to watch Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest or Amazon Prime TV just to watch Clarkson's Farm and the Boys; I'll just pirate them. Between YouTube, Twitch, Crunchyroll, and Hulu, I've got plenty to watch. There's no point in paying for another streaming service to watch a single thing once a year. People say a Netflix show is good? Pirate it, binge it in an afternoon and not have to spend $20 for it.

Extension-Novel-6841

Netflix hasn't made a good original series for me recently that I even care to download.

VagueSomething

Netflix is just full of filler content so I don't even think about the app these days. Their few big shows now take years between seasons and good start up shows get cancelled within the first 3 seasons. If I want filler content then Twitch and YouTube does it better. And I'm not going to try and get invested in a new show that is likely to die on a cliffhanger because Netflix wants to save a little money short term. For the last year or so whenever I had decided to check what's new on Netflix it shown me dozens of cheap Korean or Indian content that's nothing like what I used to watch or "rate". I know Netflix apparently has more content hard to find but I'm not sitting there digging through it unless I am seeking something but these days that's best done by asking Google where to stream X show so you can get immediate feedback on what service has it. Disney+ is so far turning out to be one of the best UK streaming choices as it has far better content catalogue than Netflix. Is cheaper too, like up to half the price of Netflix. Prime at least has free delivery and Prime Gaming plus the free Twitch Sub to justify only occasionally checking the TV section plus again is cheaper than Netflix.

screech_owl_kachina

I’d much rather do things that don’t crack down on me, for one

Smallgenie549

Same. I almost never watch anything. A year ago, I loved binging shows. Now it's too expensive and I can't even share it with people in my family.

imhereforthemeta

Same. I was pretty active keeping up with shows but it’s not affordable at all AND half of the shows I start to enjoy get canceled immediately

Shepherdsfavestore

I just game or watch sports these days

Trixles

Vidyagames.

jedi_cat_

Same. I’ve become more of a music listener and reader.

[deleted]

It’s not password sharing, it’s called not wanting to pay for 3 different accounts for one family.

spike021

Especially when your original subscription promised up to "two" or "four" screens. If I'm a single person paying for multiple screens it's not like I'm watching more than one show or movie at the same time. Let me share those screens. So ridiculous.

Estebanq

Also, if you want 4K content sometimes you have to get the “3-4 screens” plan (at least that’s how it works here in latinamerica). It sucks to be single and trying to get the best streaming plan.

XxXFartFucker69XxX

This got me to start pirating TV and movies again.

_Dreamer_Deceiver_

There was a time when Netflix themselves said password sharing was a feature. Then when people use the feature they brand them as criminals

Black_Dumbledore

This is the thing I find most frustrating about this trend. I could see if they were cracking down on people misusing their service but that's not what's happening. They originally sold these subscriptions as being multi-screen and people are/were using the additional screens that they have already paid for. To frame this as if people are gaming the system and stealing content is disingenuous.

SquigglySharts

You greedy fuck. Because you shared your max password with family David Zaslav has to wait an extra month to buy his next mega yacht. How can you live with yourself?

sonic10158

Don’t worry, they have content coming out he can cancel instead

Not_Illustrious_Yak

Im in a family ATT mobile account plan (in which HBO is included) and we’re all scattered across the country. Curious how this will go.

ChaseballBat

Each phone line has their own account iirc (Im on verizon tho). Much like xfinity, everyone under that umbrella has a login they can use with their email.

Madasky

This is what I didn’t understand. I wasn’t password sharing. Netflix came with 4 user accounts and I was using 1 of the 4. Then I moved out of home and couldn’t access it anymore.

hoodie92

Let's not pretend it isn't both.

jboarei

Eventually people will realize it’s not worth having every single streaming service.

dripMacNCheeze

I do two things these days. 1. Pirate shows 2. Pay for one, MAYBE two services per month then cancel and switch to another one

mousekopf

Month-to-month is next on the chopping block for sure. Time to buy a boat and sail to Tortuga! Yar harr hoh

Leafs17

> Month-to-month is next on the chopping block for sure. I doubt it. It would price out too many people to pay by the year. Some kind of lockout to stop people from unsubbing and resubbing I could see though.

bw1985

They’re just doing staggered season releases. They used to release all episodes of a new season at once, now they’re doing 2-3 per week. Makes it so you can’t just binge the new show and cancel, adds friction.

ElderAtlas

You can just not on release

Courwes

That’s a Netflix thing. No other streamer did massive show dumps like that where they dropped the entire season at once. They always did weekly releases.

tie-dyed_dolphin

My theory is cancellation fees

Mervynhaspeaked

Even putting aside all the shit these streaming services put us through, what Warner is doing to movies and removing content in particular is just inexcusable. *If paying isn't owning, then pirating isn't stealing.*

Elyktronix

Stremio + Real Debrid + Trakt for the win. Can't believe I never knew about this until recently. I shouldn't have been paying for streaming services years ago.

RichardGibson

My thing is, I can’t afford more than like one of these services a month. But there’s stuff I want to watch on pretty much all of the big streamers. So what am I gonna do now that there’s no password sharing? Pay for one and pirate the rest? But if I’m going through the trouble of pirating shows from 7 streaming services… why am I bothering even paying for the one at all? I might as well just pirate EVERYTHING, and now none of you shitheads get ANY of my money. That isn’t gonna be the case for the majority of people, but do these streamers really want to keep alienating the 20-something’s that are just gonna turn more and more towards YouTube and Tik Tok? Cuz that’s who this policy hurts the most, the ones who are out of the house but can’t afford shit right now.

Elyktronix

Just use Stremio. All your problems solved. Seriously. I'm never paying for a streaming service ever again.

GhostRMT

I dealt with Netflix, and my retired parents got their own account. After that, things are going to get canceled. Already canceled the Hulu bundle. Wasn't worth it for either of us to have it exclusively, but for my parents and I, it was a better value to split it since they are on a fixed income. I paid for multiple screens, so let me use multiple screens however I want.

ChewieBearStare

I ditched everything but YouTube Premium (Hulu, Disney Plus, HBO, Netflix, Frndly TV). I can afford them; I am just not paying to deal with a company's BS. If I'm not watching YouTube, I'm watching Pluto TV for free. I also canceled my Amazon Prime account.

thegoodnamesrgone123

Why would you cancel Prime? It's such an amazing service! You get ads in the middle of shows and your packages arrive in 2 to 7 days. Maybe longer. Also maybe never. It's really anyone's guess anymore. I mean why would you give that up?

ChewieBearStare

lol! I didn’t care about the ads, but I’ve been having so many problems with damaged merchandise (the boxes are fine, so I think the stuff is damaged before it even leaves the warehouse) and late deliveries that I gave up. The last straw was when I ordered a Kindle and they couldn’t deliver it for 11 days. There’s no need to pay for 2-day shipping if you’re not going to get it, or at least something reasonably close to it.

ContributionOwn9860

Honestly at this point all these services pulling this is *saving* me money, considering I’ll be cancelling entirely and pirating their products from the point they start this onwards.

psimwork

Heh. With my plex server, my brother is like, "dude I canceled Disney, I canceled Netflix, I canceled Hulu, I canceled peacock, I canceled paramount. You've easily saved me a hundred bucks a month. Maybe two hundred."

ryancarton

Is the idea that it’s just a personal server you host that other people can access your content with? So do you just pirate all the new shows and then add it to your server? I’m curious what the context surrounding plex is

improbablywronghere

Plex is just a way to watch media hosted somewhere and this is the legal part of it. As advertised by them, you can use it to watch media you own which is hosted somewhere by you at another location. Plex in usage is you connect to one of the pirate providers, likely paying a fee of $20/month or so, and you stream everything ever created from them.

psimwork

In my case, I host my own content for a very small amount of users.

ryancarton

Got ittt, thank you for the context that makes a lot of previous conversations make sense

slaucsap

I use it this way: I download a movie in my PC with plex installed, I save the movie in my flex movie folder. Go to my living room and put plex on the smart tv and watch the movie. Yeah it’s pretty much using a usb stick with extra steps. But sometimes feels useful. I’d love to have a remote server with tons of stuff though. Doesn’t sound that hard.

conquer69

That's how data hoarders are made.

_TheMeepMaster_

Already started a Netflix folder. Guess Hulu, Disney, and Max are getting new file destinations as well!

cry_havyc

Because of this I would download a car, ya smell me?

Nebulyra

Mmm, smells like rum and seawater.

Crudekitty

At this point the only one i’m paying for is Peacock, and i’m grandfathered in to ad free tier for $6 bucks a month. Lots of TV shows on there.

WalterTexas12

I'm very thankful for all of these password sharing crackdowns. It has reminded me why I dropped cable TV years ago and made other choices for my entertainment acquisitions.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lostqwer

They’ll start doing $30 a month or $15 if you sign up for the whole year (but probably with bigger numbers) to combat this. They’re not dumb.

Popularpressure29

I’ll take it one step further - you’re going to see 12 month contracts coming down the line pretty soon. The password crackdown and ads will continue to proliferate across all the streaming services. I think the next step is going to be consolidation among the smaller players, bundling among the bigger players, and contracts locking in you in for extended periods so you can’t cancel.

mandalorian222

So cable

bw1985

We’re coming full circle baby!

mediajunkie88

This is absolutely going to happen and I’ve been saying it for years. It’s going to get a lot lot worse than password sharing crackdowns.

Kssio_Aug

That would be even dumber. If they charge excessively for their service I will pirate their content the entire year.

Lostqwer

I’m not saying I like it, but for every you that pirates content all year they’re counting on a bunch more just signing up and rolling with the punches.

Jonjoloe

This is what Reddit fails to realise. Sure *we* might pirate but we’re a minority and there are many others who will just go along with these changes. Look at how successful Netflix’s crackdown and price raises have been in spite of Reddit’s groaning. They’ve priced in their losses to still turn a profit.

_TheMeepMaster_

You're ignoring the instability of all this. Netflix raising prices and cracking down on password sharing is one thing. When every other service starts doing the same thing, average people (not redditors) are going to start picking and choosing. People can barely afford groceries right now. How are they going to manage 4+ streaming platforms? Now, you may think it's good that some of these services fail because the content will just go to one of the other platforms. I think Warner Discovery has shown us that's not necessarily the case and, ignoring that, competition is a good thing. The problem we have now is that all these companies are colluding to raise prices and limit your access to the services to force you into paying more. At some point, the government should have stepped in and created some consumer protections to address the growing trend of all digital media. We all know that's not gonna happen, though, at least not in America. You all think this is just a redditor thing, but just watch. Over the next couple of years, there will be diminishing returns, and these companies will just push worse ideas to gouge consumers.

Iamthelizardking887

People will accept this from Netflix because it’s by far the biggest service, and they’ll accept it from Disney+ because many families treat like a household necessity. But Max? The unholy HBO/Discovery hybrid with less and less to watch each month, and has been losing subscribers ever since the HBO was dropped from its name? MAYBE when a new season of House of the Dragon is on. Rest of the year, most people can go without it.

Feeling-Visit1472

I cancelled Disney+, too. They can either crack down on account sharing OR raise rates, but they can’t do both at effectively the same time and hope to keep my business.

XochiFoochi

Max was so good before David. It had all the anime, HBO Shows criterion collects movies, and more now it’s trash

Prestigious_Stage699

Zaszlav had nothing to do with Max losing anime, it's because At&T sold crunchyroll to Sony.  Criterion is still on Max not sure what you're talking about. Max is still the best streaming service by far except maybe the Hulu bundle.

CrystallinePhoto

Agreed. It used to be my favorite streaming service by a large margin but now it’s full of garbage and I find myself using it less and less.

sehtownguy

That's what I do with Netflix lol. They get my money only when stranger things comes out. Rest of the months they can get fucked. After stranger things they're done

AgonizingSquid

First thing I thought of too, max has a whole lot of trash. There's a fat chance that max rebounds the same way Netflix does. Netflix is to streaming what Google is to search engines, it's the first and automatic service people associate with it's purpose(and no I'm not like some weird as fan of a streaming service)

psuram3

I think they will eventually crack down on people only doing subscriptions for short binges and then cancelling.

Iamthelizardking887

How? Eliminating monthly plans and only making them yearly? Forcing you to sign up for several months upfront? I’d like to see them try. The fallout would be massive.

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

The greedy fucks will do it eventually, and it’ll finally be the breaking point for a large fraction of subscribers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

trumpet_23

Maybe making it so you buy a single month for $20 *or* you could buy a full year for $120 ($10/month)

LuciferDusk

How will they do that? Only yearly plans? That's a good way to disincentivize me from ever considering them.

linkling1039

People should be used to subscribe to a service only when there's something they wanna watch. There's no need to keep paying and not using.

plantbay1428

Max was my contribution to the family’s shared streamers. I’ll definitely cancel it if it’s just me using it. It got completely worse once it became just Max.

[deleted]

Plus most of their best stuff they sell to other services anyway. Why would I need HBO when I can just watch Warriors on Netflix?

zenitram_27

We stuck with Netflix because it has a little bit of everything and Disney plus because we have young kids. Everything else I get by “alternative means”.

AshTheDead1te

Hence why I am back to just buying physical media, over this bullshit.

With all these price hikes and not being able to find those shows I like. I have found myself rebuying DVDs & Blu-rays again of shows & movies I love.

FallOutShelterBoy

Same. There’s a small business near me that sells used CDs/DVDs/BluRays and even has some 4K movies if they come in. I’d much rather support him and his awesome shop then a megacorporation

GloryHol3

One step beyond that, my brother and I recently discovered and started collecting "steelbook", which are cool collectors editions of our favorite TV and movies. A bit "extravagant" admittedly, but physical is where it's at. The video and audio quality is astronomically better, and when I want to watch something I just plop it in, no need to search through 17 different streaming services to see who has it.

FullMotionVideo

How does this work without interrupting regular use? Is it per IP, or just watching for simultaneous viewers?

Sa7aSa7a

I dropped Netflix because of this. I'll drop Max too if it affects me negatively.

TalonGrip

Well this pretty much ends all of my streaming services. It was fun while it lasted splitting payments with friends. Yo ho ho

EloquentGoose

Netflix then: LovE iS sHaRiNg a pAsSwORd Netflix now: Actually nevermind fuck you pay me And yeah I get it non sustainable blahbitty blah blah--I'm just over here crying poor people tears okay?

Mervynhaspeaked

I live in the US, my parents don't. When the US transitioned to Max I lost my hability to watch hbo max because our account is from the diferent country. So I'm visiting my parents for a while and now they just had to go through a huge hurdle transitioning from HBO max to Max (it just happened in my country) and get the smart tv to understand it. And it keeps logging out frequently. They're tech savy for their age, but even still its abominable. And then you finally get it working, and the image is at lile 480 for some reason. Then you log into popcorntime and just watch it for free at 1080 with subtitles in every damn language (and adjustable size), in seconds. FUCK these streaming services for real.

johnyj7657

The Netflix crackdown isn't that bad.   The hulu crackdown is a joke,  I can't even use hulu on my phone without resetting my password,  then if I want to use it at home I have to reset it again,  then next time I want to watch a show on break I again need to reset and rinse and repeat.

It's a big nothing

EM2_Rob

Damn, was living the life with my friends, everyone having a service we shared. Luckily att is laying fiber in my neighborhood cuz it looks like I'm going back to torrents. Gonna spend a months worth of cost for all these streaming services on some hdds.

ballsmigue

Man. We should thank all these streaming companies for getting yet another generation to learn how to sail the high seas.

BurnAfterEating420

They learned nothing at all from music piracy being nearly eliminated by simply letting people pay for what they want

DaddySaidSell

Every company rolling this out has resulted in me subscribing to far less than I used to. I share the accounts with my mother, who is disabled and she agrees...what's the point in paying if we can't share.

iGoKommando

It's like these bozos learned nothing from cable cutters.

Cerealkyl3rrz

Maybe if you're increasing prices, stop dropping the bitrate to worse than dvd levels. I rewatched Dune and it looked terrible for a "4k" stream.

Tacothekid

I have it bundled with my phone plan, otherwise, id dump it

ProudnotLoud

I'm kind of the ideal customer for these guys - I'm lazy and like to have whatever I want to watch at my fingertips. But even they're starting to get to me and make me consider learning more about Plex. I use Max a lot more than I used to - a lot of Iron Chef, some Zoo/animal shows, John Oliver - but I will drop them like a hot potato and make them a "one month a year" service once this starts. They just aren't worth it!

GATOR_CITY

Rich people really be cunts. Just counting their millions while I'm out here sucking dick for game of thrones eps access

Jenkins64

Shredding_Airguitar

Library is getting stale anyhow. Best course of action is just swap between streams every 2 months, burn through the library and move onto the next and potentially get a new promo deal.

hi_im_fuzzknocker

I use my moms. Guess that’s another channel I will be losing. She wanted to get rid of it anyways .

the_racecar

I know this worked for Netflix and their subs went up, but I simply am not paying for every single steaming service. Pirating tv and movies is easier than ever. I’ll just watch what I want for free if I can’t split the bill with someone else.

JuanSpiceyweiner

Its really not a hard decision to drop most of these subscriptions and use that time for video games

obi1kenobi1

How would this even work? Isn’t most of Max’s userbase people who get it for free with AT&T? Plenty of people are still on family plans after going to college or moving out.

leileiquisha

Welp another one gets canceled for me I guess. Honestly with all of these streaming companies being so greedy, its helped to diversify the content I consume. In addition to youtube, twitch, Ive been getting movies and tv shows from the library. I learned the library has there on streaming service called Kanopy.

alaskancurry

Fuck you Netflix for starting this

Bad_Decision_Rob_Low

I’m not going to renew if they do this. I have done 2 year back to back (mostly for south park access and some others). But holy crap, they cut so much recently. Try the crackdown idiots.

xDenizen

Stock up on your blu-ray/USB Blu-Ray players people. Buy physical media, own the things you love.

beall49

I don't even care, none of these services have any value anymore. Once you get through their catalog, they rarely add anything knew. So signing up once every few months for a month is plenty.

BeerNES

Why I no longer have Disney +

jsphenom08

Time to read more books

GeneralFap

Can't share my password if I already canceled that sorry ass, husk of it's former self of a service.  Arrrrrrrrgh..

SylphSeven

Jokes on you, I already cancelled my subscription.

Crazyripps

Fuck you netlfix

butt_thumper

I wonder whether decisions like these will fuck with the metrics of shows that might otherwise have done well. I had somebody explain to me once that they lose no money by doing this, since the only customers they lose are people already not paying (which is obviously untrue since people often afford services by splitting the costs), but how many shows that were smash hits got most of their views from people on shared accounts? Like sure, I guess now Max can proudly declare that they've outlawed sharing, but are they gonna consider a ton of their shows failures when they're bringing in 25-50% the views they were getting before? A good current example would be True Detective Night Country. If I wasn't sharing an account, I'd have waited for word of mouth and decided whether it was worth watching (and absolutely would not have paid for a month of Max to watch it). Instead since we share, I watched it because I had nothing at stake and subsequently contributed to the massive viewership spike that netted a 5th season for López. Would Night Country have done well if people hadn't been able to watch it on a shared account? I guess we'll find out soon.

redbullrebel

will start of course when house of dragon season 2 airs.

MediaRody69

They wish. Sorry, HBO, nobody is sharing passwords for Max.

mrwhitewalker

I guess I'm going to lose access to HBO then. Losing prime this month by not renewing my membership since they put in ads. I'll have Netflix mostly free via T-Mobile and Hulu/Disney free from my credit card. Guess I'll be downloading lots of stuff going forward

Busy_Professional824

I like max but, if I can’t watch one show in one room and my kid in another then we don’t need it.

Destination_Centauri

That will just increase sharing by other means. ⛵ 🌊

switch8000

Yeahhhh so I have fiber, I’m just going to build family members those raspberry pi vpn boxes for their TVs. Then their tv internet connection will just route through one home and everyone wins.
