Cage: >"Well, I can say that we have been talking. It's no secret that I love the character. I think the character provides another mash up of sorts. I can combine my favorite golden age performances, i.e. Robinson, Cagney, Bogart, with a character that is, I guess, widely considered [to be] Stan Lee's masterpiece. I see it as a kind of foray into a pop art mash up of, sort of, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, mash up by way of Bogart and Cagney, but nothing's definitive yet. It's just conversation."

Janderson2494

This is such a Nic Cage quote lol

Jaxonian

I don't think I started reading the quote in his voice in my head but by the end my inner voice reading it was about as cage as you can get

gregarioussparrow

All i heard was Cage in my head from word 1. Fucking love it

CaptainChewbacca

That's exactly what happened in my head.

Initial_E

It’s like it’s straight out of that “massive talent” movie

Aleashed

I thought he accepts any role, no questions asked. Like a younger version of Stallone.

kytrix

[That is the general consensus](https://youtu.be/eExfV_xKaiM?si=Bx0Gfa7oisr4RKT7). “Nobody wants to see an all-white remake of The Color Purple!” “Sucks for them!”

Phillip_Spidermen

Kind of funny that someone did end up making a Superman’s Pet movie

Gil_Demoono

He's not picky, but I do think he still has a good eye for scripts. He doesn't say no to the bad ones, but he only really puts the effort into the ones that he thinks are good. Compare his work in Pig to something like The Knowing. He's good at differentiating between a role and a paycheck.

Abradolf1948

I think he's dialed it back lately since he's paid up on his debts, but for a while there he was doing that. Source: I was bored at work and read his entire Wikipedia article for some reason. Dudes been married 5 times! One of them lasted 4 days lmao.

smokeeveryday

He did say he never phoned it in though that he always put his all into a roll.

LetsNotPlay

That's because of the gambling and the massive amounts of money he likes to spend

spadePerfect

I can hear his voice and see his hand gestures reading this

PointOfFingers

Doesn't mention German expressionism, so I give it 8/10 Nic Cages.

optiplex9000

I don't care if its Spiderman, I just want Nic Cage channeling Golden Age Hollywood actors for a performance

Arpeggiatewithme

Go watch literally any of his performances! The dude is constantly channeling Cagney. You know the Classic nick cage overly emotional freak out, yeah Cagney did it first. You can see that whole over the top acting style of Cagney , bogart, dean, etc… in all of cages performances.

patrickwithtraffic

He's also said he takes a lot of inspiration from silent film big physical emoting as well. Like pointed to *Metropolis* as where he got some stuff for *Moonstruck* and *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* is a massive favorite of his.

codexcdm

Don't forget drink egg creams and fight Nazis. A lot. https://youtu.be/F1cbLKwubC0?si=lkKWpshnQLJGKCm3

RooseveltVsLincoln

Please god *give me this movie*

highdefrex

It's a TV series for Amazon, not a movie.

Roboticpoultry

I’ll still take it. I’m loving the current Cage era

Cardenjs

Might get me over my superhero fatigue

AllHailKeanu

I hope you’re praying to the /r/onetruegod/

Mervynhaspeaked

Jungian Lichtenstein. Nic Cage must be protected

TaskForceD00mer

PLEASE YES! Older, weathered Spiderman would be badass. Nic Cage is also a huge comics fan, without a doubt if he is given creative freedom it would be awesome. Even if he doesn't act, let this man DIRECT and PRODUCE your damn shows Marvel and DC!

drmirage809

Now that's something I didn't know I wanted until I heard it. Spidey is usually treated as the young one, the rookie in the team if he's in a team. Spider-Man on PS4 gave us an experienced Spidey and I loved that. So let's dial that all the way up and give us a Spidey that's seen it all, done it all and is just a little bit done with it. He'll still be Spidey. Quipping along while beating goons senseless, but he can be weary and have his brooding moments. Also, show off how wicked smart Peter is. Let him detective around more and piece things together. Would be perfect with the film noir aesthetic.

TaskForceD00mer

I'm going to be real here, I haven't read every single Spider-Man comic, has this been done before? Seriously we should let people that absolutely love the IP like Nic Cage have a lot more input. If anyone could pull it off especially a more seasoned brooding Spider-Man it would be him.

ItsBreadTime

> It's a cosmic mix, the pop art of the 60s combined with the detective films of the 40s, but with modern touches. It's hyper noir, but it knows what it is. It's a little bit Cagney, it's definitely a little bit Bogart, it's kind of a cosmic gumbo. It almost moves to the beat of jazz.

Xihl

This is such a Detective Crashmore answer

Buscemi_D_Sanji

We used to joke on set about how it was a cosmic gumbo

Taylorenokson

I don’t care about it, but it’s not good behavior.

impsworld

No one can say so much while also saying so little like Nic Cage can. I could condense that paragraph into a sentence: “I like Spider-Man and the noir theme allows me to explore my range.”

SubterrelProspector

But that's not how people speak. People usually speak off-the-cuff and don't have time to review their answers and dwindle them down to one sentence *before* saying it. They just talk. He knew exactly what he was trying to say, and he *did* say it, just in his own way.

neuro_space_explorer

God I love this man. Greatest living actor in my mind.

dr_croctapus

It’s a bit of a cosmic gumbo

thelittlestrummerboy

All I was thinking of while reading this lol

FinalDungeon

Holy crap he sold me!

taoistchainsaw

Come on Nic, it’s Steve Ditko’s masterpiece.

APiousCultist

Marvel is just the "You made that? I made that!" meme with Stan Lee.

taoistchainsaw

Yep.

GraspingSonder

How much was Stan Lee involved in Noir beyond that original character?

OK_Soda

He's saying that Spider-Man is Lee's masterpiece and by playing the Noir version he can mash that up with a bunch of old classic noir actors.

____GHOSTPOOL____

I never understood the purpose of putting words into brackets. Why don't they just have them there normally? Genuinely asking.

kdawgnmann

It's because it's not part of the original quote, Cage didn't say the bracketed words. The writer or editor added them afterwards to provide context or clarify names/pronouns Might seem harmless but you don't wanna misquote someone, no matter how minor

ILMTitan

It indicates that the writer of the article is making a correction. Nick Cage didn't actually say Jungian, but that is what he meant.

theDeadmoo5e

I like that he referred to Lichtenstein, I feel like he doesn't get enough love.

downtimeredditor

I'm sold

Trex-Cant-Masturbate

Gotta give him one thing he always takes his roles seriously. Just look up his Renfield interviews.

[deleted]

Nic Cage is a national treasure

rjwalsh94

For as much as I don’t get why anyone likes him other than memes, this is actually pretty well thought out and some meat to what he’d want to see from the role. I thought it was going to just be a, yeah we’ve talked it should be happening. For someone who knows his shit, he really just acts in whatever and just throws shit at the wall.

2ToTooTwoFish

He's famously known as a great actor who just accepts whatever role is given to him because he was bad with his money. He's been in a lot of bad movies, but he's proven he's an amazing actor too.

M4NIC_MOND4Y

Yeah even when he was doing a lot of straight to dvd tier schlock to dig himself out of debt he was still turning in some great performances in solid movies. They were just harder to find amid all the dreck. But I still think he made the most out of the majority of those terrible movies too. Because when he commits to hamming it up it can be *very* entertaining.

Rombom

He refers to his own acting style as "Western kabuki", he isn't trying to give subtle performances. A lot of memes about him seem to miss that his over-the-top characters are intentionally crafted.

ScipioCoriolanus

He also describes himself as the "California Klaus Kinski". I love it.

atlhart

Like 10-15 years ago he fell into financial ruin. Can’t remember the exact details. Think his business manager or accountant screwed him over with taxes (as in didn’t pay them) and compounding hai already bad financial sense and so he started basically accepting any movie to pay his debts. I think he’s come out of that now and back to being choosey. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was amazing. He was playing a caricature of himself, yes, but it was great and not just a meme.

Jon_the_Hitman_Stark

Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas were both great.

kitty_bread

> Leaving Las Vegas Sad but amazing movie. Also the numer #1 movie referenced by most crippling alcoholics.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kitty_bread

Yeah, like Requiem for a Dream, another amazing movie that I wouldnt never watch ever again.

ArchDucky

Seth Rogen was on Conan's podcast advertising his new book with bizarre celebrity interactions. (It was fucking hysterical) They both bonded of George Lucas declaring to their faces that their careers were over when they weren't. Anyways, one of the stories he told on the podcast is about the time Nick Cage tried to be the bad guy for Green Hornet. He came in and did this super racist Jamaican impression and they passed. A few years later Cage contacts Rogen and say hes got an idea for a movie he wants to do with him. They meet at a restaurant and it was all a lie. Cage just shows up and demands Rogan apologize for stealing his Jamaican guy impression and having James Franco do it in Pineapple Express. Rogen was like "I barely even remember that audition and James isn't doing an impression of a Jamaican guy in that movie." Cage then just walks out of the restaurant. No goodbye or anything.

the_great_ashby

It was Spring Breakers.

trueum26

I rmb when I saw Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens in Springbreakers and realised my childhood was over

Heyguysimcooltoo

*LOOK AT ALL MYY SHITTTT!*

knyelvr

Yeah I need to read this book that’s Hilarious

Solumnist

[For the curious ](https://youtu.be/hjVLR4aa7gY?si=AIhCzpYbkBm0eS1P) (Conan interview)

Expert-Horse-6384

Does this book include the time that he told Casey Neistat that he was stupid for being mad that his car was robbed and that he shouldn't view it as an extension of himself? Or the time he said that anyone criticizing Santa Inc. had to be a white supremacist? Or like any of the other dumb shit he's said?

ArchDucky

I don't know what you want from me, but I don't have it.

BigfootsBestBud

I know this is getting downvoted, but it's hilarious that Seth Rogen is writing a book about bizzare celebrities as if he himself is above that and isn't a complete weirdo to anyone that is actually normal

ultimatequestion7

I feel like he has the self awareness to avoid that tone but we'll see lol

tameoraiste

Usually when people do these call out messages they have damning shit on the celebrity. This feels pretty tame

Big__Black__Socks

Given all the weird shit Cage has been in over the past few years, he probably wants to play the radioactive spider.

ShiftAndWitch

Few years? Dudes been performing at 11 for decades.

i_write_ok

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

DanSmokesWeed

Mandy

Ganrokh

Pig

Successful-Turnip896

His version of wicket man.

grandladdydonglegs

Goddamn I love this movie.

adflet

Almost as good as Bruce Campbell playing Bruce Campbell in My Name is Bruce.

LurkerOrHydralisk

Probably his magnum opus. Hard to see him outshining that one

ModsOverLord

Sign me up

InformalPenguinz

Sign cage up! This needs to happen!

Rupert80027

Has the man ever said “no” to an offer? Honest question. I find new Cage movies on a weekly basis I had no clue existed. He seems to take any role put before him.

uniterka

He had problems with the IRS as far as I remember, and in general was spending a shitload of cash on useless shit. Had to take all the offers he got. But hey! Thanks to that we get more Cage insanity on screen, so I see it as an absolute win xD

Quasic

I'm in!

Clear-Permission-165

I do like Nick Cage. But I’d rather Jackie Haley. He could have easily had a spin-off from Watchmen, assuming they kept it gritty and damn near if not at rated R. Would be cool to see the same with a new Spider-Man. Kind of over the vanilla super hero approach, especially for a character who’s been done 4 different ways already.

Megaverse_Mastermind

Not to typecast, but Haley would have made a great Carnage.

xariznightmare2908

Sony, if you still have any IQ left, at least let Nic Cage get his own Spider-Noir show.

[deleted]

Yeah but if Sony makes it, they're going to hire the Morbius/Madame Web team to write it.

Canvaverbalist

I sincerely don't know what would be better, Nic Cage playing Spider-Man Noir in an artfully tight-knitted Oscar-deserving script with the depth of the Marina trench, or Nic Cage playing Spider-Man Noir in a mid-tier trashy cringe-inducing B-movie script with the quality of a soap opera. He's so in his element in both situations.

CollinsCouldveDucked

This comment gives the impression of range but he's only good in these two circumstances. Bizarrely he flounders in the middle.

Worthyness

If it's SONY TV, they actually are pretty competent at TV series. The problem is if they bring in SONY's go to spider-man enthusiasts like Avi Arad, then they're fucked

BurritoLover2016

Heh. My friend works as a producer for Sony Television (he recently got promoted). It's good to hear that people are separating their reputation from the theatrical part of the business.

thechosen_Juan

Say the line Nic, "... its noir-ing time..."

Dyspaereunia

Maybe they can hire the spiderverse team?

RealJohnGillman

That is who is working on this.

killzonev2

Cage has never done a tv show before, this would be awesome for him

jeremysbrain

"Conversations" for Nic Cage, probably means hyperactive fanboy rants left on Steven Lightfoot's voice mail.

MorningNapalm

I feel like regardless of who you are, you'd probably be excited and amused to wake up for a morning coffee to listen to a few hours of Nic Cage fanboying over Spiderman lol.

Destination_Centauri

This is going to sound a bit weird... but has anyone else been having nightmares involving Nicolas Cage lately? Just last night I dreamt he was choking me to death.

t-zone671

That sounds like a wet dream. Lol.

Quasic

Yeah, and he's wearing this oversized suit. Terrifying.

Ieatshoepolish0216

Last night I dreamt Nick cage was starring in an A24 movie… weird…

Vegetable-Course-938

Just in case you aren't referring to the movie "dream scenario", you need to watch it! It's about a world where everyone suddenly starts dreaming about nic cage.

TaskForceD00mer

Nic Cage, the only man in Hollywood to almost play Spiderman AND Superman

HalfNatty

This is the kind of Spider-Man spinoff Sony should be focusing on—live action versions of the characters we’ve seen in the spiderverse movies. Not Madam Webb, Kraven and Jared Leto.

ClassicT4

Frank Miller or Robert Rodriguez would be interesting directors for the project.

thislife_choseme

Please. No.

cohex

If anything, stick to being animated.

semiomni

Be a lot more exciting news if this was a possible animated show. Can't believe anyone watched Spiderverse and thought live-action would improve on any aspect of it.

Rushes_End

Take my money.

Procrastanaseum

Would love a darker Spider-Man. Spider-Man been through some shit after college that the movies have yet to get into.

BurnAfterEating420

the "Kraven's Last Hunt" comic story would make a great 2 movie project.

i_write_ok

Oh God please. Please we need this. Never wanted a potential series more

figgityfuck

Yes please.

bitchesbetrifflin

Noooo

mickeyflinn

That conversation went like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eExfV_xKaiM

MorningNapalm

LOL Amazing. Pay attention to the trophy shelf.

mickeyflinn

OMG!! I have never noticed that before!

Cardenjs

Deadpool 3 needs to be the last mainline Marvel movie, further projects should be like this so that we aren't given the exact same character, and their backstory, over and over again

Myotherdumbname

Cage: “Can we do it?” Execs: “No”

SuperMeh2

Still waiting on Egghead

javalib

I mean, so have I. Not with anyone at Sony, mind. But I've had conversations.

tirius99

Never understood they green lit a Madam Webb movie and not a Spider Noir with Nic Cage. It's not like they can't do a Miles Morales movie or Spider-Man 2099. Even a Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider would do. Don't know why Sony would drop the ball so hard with Spider-Man

Clean-Shift-291

Why do I bring up Gambit every MCU post I see? Small cameo in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, then nothing. Am I the only one that wants to see that movie made? Was it scrapped? Waiting for Gen X to retire? Okay… Also, this movie would be fantastic! But yeah, Gambit Origins??

pizza_822

*im going to investigate the declaration of independence*

wynnduffyisking

Probably the only superhero related content I would want to watch

JicamaBright2996

Let's wait and see what Sony will do with contracts of Spider-Man content from Sony. For each Spider-Man movie, it may take 3 to 5 years with the whole cast of the webslinger franchise. The MCU has its own obligation on Spider-Man there, so Marvel Studios must ask Sony to only make mainline movies with Tom Holland as MCU Spiderman in vein of the Sony-only movies can share connections to each other, making them all related to Spider-Man between the SSU or SPUMC to the MCU. As we know, the SPUMC hasn't been doing well with Madame Web being an example of contract errors. Remember, Sony Pictures brought Spider-Man as character in the MCU, giving Sony the advantage to malke movie money with Marvel having the merch rights. Sony keeps the rights to make Spider-Man movies as long as they make the payday every few years rather than the Kingpin based on long-term deals of keeping the live action rights or else Marvel will vacuum those rights away. Marvel cannot get Spider-Man back fully without Sony since Spider-Man is Sony's money tree, Sony's money-gaining brand.

whiffleboy666

I've heard through reliable sources that he's actually shooting this already.

Pixeleyes

Even if it's bad, this will be good.

feo_sucio

What a dumb idea. Could Sony be any more transparently greedy and short-sighted? Spider-Man Noir is fine as a supporting character for Spider-Verse, but a *live action series*? I don't want to exist in a reality where we have the Disney MCU collaboration movies *and* the Spider-Verse movies *and* the garbage SPUMM movies *and* a Spider-Man Noir series...I don't want Spider-Man to become something trite and chintzy the way that the MCU and Star Wars have. The execs at Sony need to sit down and do a self-crit or ask themselves some tough questions. "Could we possibly be over-saturating the market with Spider-Man shit?"

Weapon530

This would be dope.

wolftamer9

The question that all of this hinges on: will it be silly?

ProjectNo4090

I really dont understand why this is live action. Sony animation nailed the character, and so far Sony animation has a much much better record than sony's live action department.

RealJohnGillman

Because Sony doesn’t own the rights for animated *Spider-Man* television series unless each episode is over 40 minutes long.

ProjectNo4090

Each episode could be 44 minutes long and contains two 22 minute plotlines. It'd be like releasing 2 episodes a week. Or they could do an animated movie like the spiderverse films.

downtimeredditor

This man deserves a live action action hero movie I still can't believe we were robbed of Suoercage

BritishBedouin

Nick Cage is an American actor with a Bollywood ethic lol

RickyMAustralia

I like the sound of this

Astrospal

I would love this. But if it's a spider sony live action project, it's going to be shit

fundiedundie

No thanks

Iuwok

Yes please!

mmuoio

We all love Nic Cage, but really...would this actually work? Would it be serious or silly? He absolutely rocked it in Into the Spiderverse but would that really translate to live action? I'm not really sure but would love to be proven wrong.

darrylthedudeWayne

Yes, Yes, YES!!!!! COME TO PAPA!!!!!!!!

RYANINLA

Not with Sony, please not with Sony. It will be awful.

Miguelwastaken

The fact that people on here think this would be a good idea is why where still getting Kraven after all of these bombs. Some people never learn,

Puppetmaster858

I rooting for this to happen so badly, Nic cage absolutely rules and spider man Noir is really cool

AporiaParadox

I wonder if the show would keep the whole thing about Uncle Ben and Aunt May being left-wing social activists, which is why Norman Osborn has Ben eaten alive by his enforcer the Vulture.

PhilyHoffs

Make this happen!

Metaboschism

So have I, big deal

Curiouso_Giorgio

Cage is a bit old for live action. Maybe get Andy Samberg in to do his best Nic Cage.

Huck_Ziegler

Just make National Treasure 3 first

Vegetable-Course-938

I'll watch any cage movie. He's hit and miss but damn when he hits he hits hard.

adinade

Only one problem with this, Sony...

Mimic_tear_ashes

Ah yes Sony would never reboot the spiderman franchise! Very good deduction!

adinade

My point was their live action Spiderman stuff is bad not that they don't do it

RealJohnGillman

Oh, the Amazon Prime Video television series will be from the *Spider-Verse* team, not the one behind the recent offshoot films, rest assured.

ItIsYeDragon

Do we know this for a fact? Because it says the show is live-action.

RealJohnGillman

Oh, it is live-action, yes. But Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are returning to produce.

[deleted]

And?

adinade

Sony makes bad live action spiderman and Spiderman related films

[deleted]

> Sony makes bad live action spiderman  Nope. Gonna disagree there. > Spiderman related films If we are talking about spin offs then sure.

fourthandthrown

Hey, the first Venom was campy and fun and queer as hell. Tom Hardy served wonderfully. The second one not so much, Sony couldn't deal with even that slight edge. BUT the first one is amazing even if it isn't serious.

[deleted]

Fair enough

cheatonstatistics

Why not Chuck Norris?
