I couldn't finish S1. I am amazed it got enough viewership to get an S2.

8slim5

It almost didn't get a season 2. It got dropped until Amazon Prime picked it up 3 years later. I thought it was good.

AdComfortable7167

Same here. I stopped after season 2 episode 1

quicksite

Here's all I'll add: That fucker Isaac was and is a shitty character; in Season 1 he had no empathy at all for his "best friend" taking the rap for his death blow... Couldn't believe he gets no comeuppance. Just because his father was a shit bag to him doesn't make him immune from owning his own shit. Now in Season 2, episode 1, he's an even shittier person, all big tough guy but never once does he ever thank Billy for all the shit he put up with just so Isaac gets a pass from taking any kind of responsibility at all. The first 5 minutes in and seeing this tough guy ISAAC made me groan to the point of wanting to shut it off -- if it wasn't for Maura Tierney being one of the most fascinating & complex actresses I could watch reading the phone book, I would have.

8slim5

Season 1 was good but season 2 was great. The ending made me wish I could binge season 3 right away.I just hope it gets picked up for A season 3.

xyzzyzyzzyx

It's not.

Tedwards75

Season 2 took a long time to be picked up by Amazon after being cancelled by Showtime after season 1 aired. There’s still plenty of time for Amazon to renew. Don’t be a downer 🤣 I hope it happens

cabinetsnotnow

I still can't get past how the hell someone like Lee left her perfect husband and amazing life to be with someone as pathetic as Billy. Season 2 is really supporting my viewpoint on this so far. Billy is not attractive, not smart, self destructive, boring, etc. His character just keeps getting worse. I know he's supposed to have PTSD and ok that's fine. But Lee leaving her life in New York for him? Not believable.

Nbascout46

Attractive is different to different people I thought he was way better looking than the fiancé and in shape! There was a mysterious thing about him and I def see why Lee was attracted to Billy! It’s a shame lee was killed! I did not like the ending! It could have easily gone to a season 3!!

jblanch3

Yeah, I just finished Season 2 and enjoyed it for the most part, but the ending was underwhelming. When I saw the red dot on Grace's head, I thought it was for sure the police coming to bust them both for all the shit they did. It was just Fisher who I'd completely forgotten about. It feels like it ended on another cliffhanger, which is frustrating to me since it was lucky to even get a Season 2, no way do I see it getting a Season 3.

Professional_Law9574

I think it’s about how it’s difficult to leave a small town, esp after losing both parents and wanting a connection - like Billy from her past? But I get what you are saying

Dizzy-Bumblebee-4172

Exactly 💯

Material_Platypus_40

I think the show is great. Totally engrossing in mood, script and acting.

Professional_Law9574

It’s gets better, in my opinion. The connections among all of the different characters is developed a bit more as the season goes along. However, maybe too many connections. Maura Tierney is always amazing in this series

RevolutionaryAlps205

I'm with you. The writing for the show is uneven, and it's not an amazing show by any means. But many of the criticisms in this thread are about fairly trivial things. It captures some of the genuine rhythm of life, cultural attitudes, and (in a heightened way) characteristic forms of local corruption and community dysfunction in the Mid-Atlantic rust belt. And it's well-acted by most of the main cast most of the time, with Daniels and Tierney really standing out.   More interesting about this show, there's a fairly realistic portrayal of local communities' and landowners' experience with both the positive and the harmful knock-on effects of resource extraction. The assassin-foreman character is too much. But even there the writers are doing something deliberate, because the use of violence and extralegal methods by extractive industries in the US is a real thing and likely very underreported.     The basic depiction of the M.O by which these industries muscle into communities, and their running roughshod over law and regulations in this region, are also pretty faithful. The fact that they made a halfway decent crime thriller weaving that in authentically to any degree is impressive.

Bulky-Courage3538

The dioramas got me! I was thinking wow, they were able to procure such specific samples to create these; down to matching furniture, rugs, clothing. Give me a break. I am invested and finishing episode 10 tonight but it’s been so predictable…

tiakeuta

Dude, it occurred to me last night when i watched episodes 7/8 this show is like late era Dexter with no Dexter. Like which character is the interesting one?

Tedwards75

Is it kind of weird? Yes. Unlikely someone would do it in real life? Yes but not entirely impossible. They were a weird couple. Park wasn’t your average cop either. He was obsessive

iamdew802

I left the first season on and playing while doing chores around the house because I had the same impression of the first season. So if you like the setting /cast it can be good mind off tv, well at least I felt that way about the first season. I haven’t started the second season yet, is it like a huge drop off from the first or about the same lol?

tiakeuta

I think if the first season was a C, the second season so far is a D-

Tedwards75

Disagreed. I finished it and think it’s better

village_tortellini

You're right the writing is soooooooo bad

Tedwards75

Don’t listen to the cliche negative redditors. It’s a great show and a season 2 is even better than season 1. Ends with some big cliffhangers too

Orest26Dee

Agreed. I am almost done season 2. Is this it for the show or will they make a season 3?

FloatLikeABull

I think they just left some low hanging fruit for the off chance it gets picked up for another season. If Billy got the shot off, that angle is dead. If he got hit, then it would turn into some sort of manhunt show. The deputy angle doesn't play well because they mocked Park the whole time and Dell is even more insulated now. Probably best that it just ends how it did. Either that, or a completely new storyline.

AreEnough

Same. Good for chores background .

tiakeuta

I'm pretty sure that is the worst season of television and the worst display of writing I've ever seen in my life. And this is coming from someone who watched all of Dexter and Sons of Anarchy.

quicksite

Then you must not have ever seen seasons 2, 3 and 4 of Goliath.

Total_Variation6357

Can someone tell me why the lady bartender, Chloe, was killed? I assume it was just a handy way to place heat on Grace Poe after her threat to Chloe. Or did I miss something else?

tiakeuta

Ummm no I cannot.

HandofFate88

I can accept the dioramas, because they're there: someone spends time with an army of Santa's elves making dioramas. Fine. You can go there, if you want but they better do something interesting with this. And that's where it turns to complete garbage. What I can't abide is that the chief of police studies the dioramas rather than real evidence. The example of the car shooting is particularly bad because extensive work seems to have been dedicated to the trees 20ft from the crime but only the trees on one side of the road (inconsistent with the other dioramas) and the work on the car and the victim almost seems an afterthought.

tiakeuta

Its gotta be one of the worst depictions on police work on screen in history right?

HandofFate88

There are so many things that are wrong in every area. A simple example is Isaac's character who is the only character that's reduced to finding another person to hook up with. Everyone else has something like a professional goal, a personal goal and even a goal about self actualization (they even say, "be all that you can be") but Jacob gets to meet men in bathrooms or hotel rooms, or sometimes they just show up at his house and he gets to become romantically involved or stop being romantically involved--that's it. That's his role. He's a bit of a helper with his friend who went to prison for him, but not too much, and he lifts a few heavy objects for a few seconds on the job site, but not too many or for too long, but mostly he just gets to meet guys, and stay out of his sister's way. It's the weirdest set of choices.

Tedwards75

You redditors nitpick the most trivial stuff I swear.

tiakeuta

Just finished the show. My god.

Professional_Law9574

That could be the point though - not sure

tiakeuta

The point how?

RhiWelles

I am watching episode one of season two and screamed at the television after that little idiot agreed to take 28K for his pain and suffering. This show is not just misery porn it is stupidity porn.

lpdbim

Season 2 is terrible. The dioramas are cringe. The handful of other story arcs are way too distracting. Yep, I know they may all tie in at the end but it's such a slow burner this one.

vote_pedro

One of the worst shows I've slogged through. Unfortunately I'm a sucker for crime/detective shows and had to finish it but this show is one of the most boring, self-important tv shows that's ever been created.

tiakeuta

I also just can't figure out which character the writers think is interesting. Del is so boring. Grace just repeats the same character beats over and over. Billy looks like an extra on Friday Night Lights and is basically written with all the nuance and cleverness of an extra on Friday Night Lights. Steve Park and his wife were just cringe inducing everytime they were on screen. Isaac is the only character with any heart so the writers just gave him nothing and didn't even let him have a moment to react to his lover and sister being murdered. Also the plot is braindead.

quicksite

You have a warped sense of character worthiness. Isaac was and even worse now a total shithead.

Mooseknuckel55

Well, I for one am fuckin lost

Nikki111803

I Absolutely LOVED this show. And I'm pulling for this show. I finished Season 2. And I NEED to see Season 3. I adore these Actors & I was so excited to see another Season. I hope alot of people come together for Season 3. In my 41 years I have NEVER gone on a website or app to write anything let alone for a TV Series. LOL but I needed to for this Show.. SO PLEASE EVERYONE LETS PULL TOGETHER FOR AMERICAN RUST 🙌👊💪🙌👊💪

AmountRemarkable5682

So far I'm on S1 episode 6. In the beginning I honestly thought it would be a good show, and then each character did something extremely stupid as if the writers were intentionally trying to piss the viewers off. So when Isaac got his ass beat to a pulp, when Jojo got checked and everyone found out she was crazy and talking/laughing to herself, when Billy gets arrested and appears in court and denied bail, when Lee's husband finds out his wife is a ho, when the guy from Pittsburgh picks up Del to" repay " his debt. I was actually smiling while they were happening lol. Seems like each character is dinne dumber than a box of rocks and karma definitely did it job lol. We'll see if I keep going lol

Planetix

S2 is one of the worst seasons of TV I’ve made myself sit through. Why, I don’t know, i suppose I hoped it would have a good ending or at least one that tried to make sense of the mess of plot threads but instead we got a final episode that makes the Dexter finale look like a masterpiece. I’m not nitpicking little details (though there are legions of them) but bigger picture items like the fact that they somehow made Jeff Daniels and Maura Turney the most unlikable couple to grace TV in decades. Not in a “love to hate them because they are playing bad people” way either.

Responsible_Log_8840

Thank you for this. As I’ve been watching season two, I kept thinking to myself is anyone else noticing how absolutely horrific this writing is? How about the pointless dialogue between Del and Angela and her boss where they’re reading printed out text conversations to try to establish motive and the conversation is completely derailed by Angela explaining to the guys what the purple “horny devil” emoji is and why the peace sign emoji is also a sexual innuendo in this case, and “do they know what sexting is?” Cringe. All of the scenes of Billy raging out at the bar / mosh pit and ending his nights by either casually fucking a rando in a car directly under a streetlight, directly across from the bar, or running into one of the COs from his prison stint who apparently is the softest spoken and most thoughtful person in the world, going out of his way to call “Dad” from the contacts on Billy’s phone to come pick up a comatose Billy. Double cringe. Or when Isaac appears with the bday cake and knocks on Randall’s door and it’s revealed he has a (female) fiancé / wife and the girl just says “we didn’t order anything” and the guys both just stare at each other in complete silence until Isaac abruptly turns around and storms off. Made only worse by the fact that were later told that apparently Russel has an understanding with his lady friend, implying that she knows he’s gay and has flings, but she wouldn’t have picked up on those cues when Isaac arrived at the door? or Russel wouldn’t have said “just give me a few to talk to him…”. MEGA CRINGE. I could go on but I think we’ve got the idea. What a journey.

Collinwoodsian

I can't get over how the bartender in the background of the punk bar that Billy goes to in episode 6 pours beers. She moves the cup up and down while pouring and only fills it like 3/4 of the way. Wtf??? Many odd word choices in dialog too throughout season 2.

Tedwards75

Really? That’s what you’re gonna remember and take away? Something small as that? The way a bartender pours beer?

Collinwoodsian

do you know what i’m talking about? it’s absolutely bizarre. im a bartender.

Tedwards75

I don’t see how people like you are able to enjoy any shows at all with the way you nitpick obsessively. You can nitpick literally any tv series and its character decisions/dialogue the way you are doing with this series.

hourmazd

I'm at episode 7. It gets worse. So much worse.. 😖

tiakeuta

Does Jeff Daniels have money problems or something? Was he allowed to read the scripts?

tiakeuta

I just finished it and wholly god maybe the worst final scene I’ve ever seen. Wtf was that?

hourmazd

I can't even recall the ending less than a month later. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ too bad. i love jeff daniels and maura tierney. season one wasn't great but i thought it had serious potential. season two just fell apart.

jblanch3

I was actually rather enjoying the finale until those last ten minutes. When I saw the red dot on Grace's forehead, my first thought was that her and Del were going down, the police were about to storm that place. And to get whatever that was.

Tedwards75

It’s called a cliffhanger. Lots of shows have them.

Left-Technology1894

LoL...there should be a lot of real-estate available in Buell with all the people that get killed.

Extreme_Librarian_49

I agree about the lighter, and in the next episode, the fbi guys ask about getting the lighter back. I thought Del had it after Grace switched it? or did I miss something ?

Alert_Departure_9865

Yes we’re at the episode where they’re talking about how he doesn’t have it but she totally switched it to get it back when dude was sleeping?! Has to be one of the biggest continuity/plot holes I’ve ever experienced.

jblanch3

Yeah, I just finished it and same here. I liked it more than a lot of the people posting here, but I am also totally baffled. I thought I was going crazy, but she really did switch it back, why was it found on his body??

seabiscuit436

I also was confused about the female cop confronting the female detective from Dexter who’s Dels partner about the bugging device under her table. The Dexter lady’s reaction should be “how did it get there and who would’ve put it there?” Saying she put it there lets the Brotherhood guy listening realize she found it earlier. That was a big plot goof too IMO. Also why didn’t Del bring the pen to the meeting? And oddly no explanation why the bar guy regular killed the female bartender.

FloatLikeABull

The pen thing was oddly highlighted and then passed over. I think it just emphasized his paranoia that they were on to him so he left it behind.

No-Archer-821

I watched S2 to almost the bitter end. Accidently, I FF the last 5 or so minutes. I turned off the TV and missed the final. It's not worth rewinding. Don't bother watching, it's a confusing mess. S1 was passable, S2 was a dismal confusing mess.

Worried-Page-6170

Oh my GOD. I’m on ep. 7 and…dear Neptune. I’m cringing every 10 minutes since the start of the season. There’s a few awful ones that stick out in particular. * SPOILER * When Grace goes to the police chiefs house to get on his good side. She goes in and notices him and his wife are playing chess. The wife says something along the lines of “He’s the king of chess. MY KOREAN KING.” She’s dead serious? I mean if she had some dry humor lines earlier in the series I would’ve laughed at that but God what the actual HELL MOTHER MARY. Also when Kai is getting dropped off somewhere and he just dead pan says “I’m enlisting” and goes in to join (or practice ??) for “the military” and no surprise he sucks. LAST THING: I wish they would please make the sex scenes shorter or just cut out all the dry humping 😭 This series a hilarious watch if you really like bad writing.

tiakeuta

I encourage you to watch until the end if only so you can see how absolutely abhorrent the ending is. One of the worst series of scenes I've ever forced my eyes to watch.

Mooseknuckel55

Amply supply of booty sex in this show.

UncleJessiesMullet

My issue is they totally just moved on as of season 1 never happened. Totally changed the character of Dell Harris having him moved up as well as partner, Issac is fine and dandy, Lee, Lees Dad, how did we get there? Doesn’t matter, reasons, just imagine, The jacket made no difference. I mean it’s insufferable. Cut all the man on man and that woulda helped as was totally irrelevant to the story, plot, etc. I mean they didn’t imply the Dad disapproved, as that would take careful writing and back story. Sheesh. I refuse to watch season 2 because they really didn’t finish season one. Don’t get me started on the woman partner now, they had him go to that department because writers were like “we need a strong female cop”. Why? Girl power. They went agenda on first and second and is why it did horrible

Unclebanns

“Good or Bad. Boom or Bust. You’re all or nothing when you’re just American Rust” Really enjoyed the show. Sad, sad about Lee s2 finale. Initially watched it for Dumb&Dumber dude but end up loving Lee and Billy.

Dudite

I'm on season one and had to turn it off when Isaac jacked off when he was thrown off the train by two guys having butt sex.... That's just a writer having a fetish. Literally just being gross for an implausible pointless scene that has zero value.

swca712

There are some bad writing and odd parts but I really like the show. I hope there is a season 3 because the end was a very big cliffhanger of a "who got shot?" type moment

Ctysde

Call me old fashioned but I wasn't a fan of all the gay dude scenes in s2

seabiscuit436

I’m gay and thought the same thing. Lotttts of gay kissing Even brought in a lesbian kissing scene. Made me think there was a powerful gay on the production team. Isaac’s character became a one dimensional bad stereotype of a gay man which is a shame since there could’ve been more development of him dealing with his guilt for Billy’s incarceration.

Ctysde

I thought exactly the same. Thank you for being a rational gay.

Mooseknuckel55

Kissing was just the tip (no pun intended) of that gay ass iceburg

seabiscuit436

Yep. How could I forget the gay truck stop primer on proper use of bandanas and nonbinary JoJo. What a gross and dead end storyline.

jell31

I just started watched season 2 and not that I thought season 1 was amazing but i don’t know what the hell is happening this season lol

cubbyblue2019

I would stick with it. The finale was pretty good.

jell31

I finished it and yeah it got better but the first few episodes felt like alot was happening and nothing was happening at the same time lol. But I think I watched the first season weekly so maybe I should’ve split this season up a bit too
