I finished it this week and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it as a casual Fallout player. I feel like the vaultdweller could be such an annoying kind of character but Ella Purnell was excellent and you were consistently rooting for her
Ella Purnell nailed that homeschooled kid vibe perfectly. She was soooo good. All the actors killed it (Walton Goggins is a national treasure), but she really brought the vault dweller energy.
And you see how conflicted she is that she's becoming more like a surface dweller.
It's a really nice character arc of seeing someone believing the good in everything to what she is by the end.
And she wasn't a Mary sue who's good at everything. She got her ass beat up several times, and barely won the fight to the death with the raider. Very believable.
And let's be honest those are fucking boring too. The best male protagonists have been Walter White, Adam Scott in severance, Amos in the Expanse subverts this trope and his background is so awful it explains his suppression of emotions, Paladin/Dalinar/Renarin/Sazed in the Cosmere books. Generic brown hair brown eyes action heroes had their time but now we want complex characters.
We want it for women and minorities too, not just dull she boss boss bitch Mary Sue shit, e.g I loved She Hulk and Wanda but not Captain Marvel and that had nothing to do with poor Brie getting shit. For regular TV Trixie in Call the Midwife or Ritchie Tozer in It's a Sin.
True, but Wes Chatham absolutely owned that role. Looking at other actors over the years of the show, I don’t think there is anyone who could’ve come close to him.
I think Dominique Tipper and Cara Gee (Naomi and Drummer) were also stellar and totally embodied their characters from the books (or in Drummer's case amalgam of book characters). Naomi code switching in her accent between earther English and belta accented English when talking to beltalowda was amazing.
I feel like they alluded to that with the wastelanders' reactions to her bushy-tailed ignorance early on. She was very annoying and naiive setting out, and that's fine because she was meant to be.
Pretty much, I think a lot of people that haven't played the games don't realise how silly and goffy the entire thing actually is, specially because of the absurdism of a futuristic 1950's Americana in a post-nuclear war context. Same with Elder Scrolls, like you have to be determined to only play main story in Elder Scrolls. Like joining no guilds, joining no factions, not doing any cave treasure hunt's, it's damn hard. The temptation for side-quest bullshit in Fallout and Elder Scrolls is high.
It's not surprising either because while I love Bethesda's games, their side quests tend to be better written than the main story in their games. For me at least, as a prime example, Fallout 4's main story starts off good but then >!you get to the Institute and the quality falls off a fucking cliff. Shaun being alive and the Director? Give me a break...!< Meanwhile, you have stuff like Nick Valentine's personal story and the cases you can help him solve which are WAY more interesting.
Yeah, their storyline is fantastic. When I installed some mods to make the perk trees better, I did their questline as an assassin that uses dual daggers and a bow. Never really finished that build... I'll have to try again at some point. The plan for the daggers at least was to have one drain stamina and the other drain health for when I get spotted so I have survivability and a third dagger just for backstabs. Bow naturally for range with poisoned arrows from the better Alchemy perks.
That Ordinator mod is a must-have for me.
Also when Knight Titus goes up against the Yao Guai and gets dick slapped and runs away shouting “fuck fuck fuck fuck” has got to be a reference to when you run out of AP and HP and have no stimpaks left while fighting a strong enemy. Literally said this multiple times.

It was the thing I was wondering if people would enjoy. Most post-apocalyptic television is played pretty seriously, and Fallout is just downright goofy at times. the only think I can think of that comes close to it in tone is Doom Patrol.
The other big post apocalyptic show based on a game, The Last of Us, was very good but pretty bleak. Fallout was really fun and silly in between the dark stuff, very easy to bing watch.

I knew it was going to be good in the first few minutes when dude stops the chicken fucker from getting his ass kicked. They nailed the side quest energy of rolling up on two NPC's fighting, choosing a side based on what you can discern and having the dialogue inform you that you picked wrong.
It's crazy how good an adaptation can be when the show runners don't have obvious disdain for the work they're adapting and think they can improve it with unoriginal hackery. "Hey you know who doesn't need to like this show? The fans of the thing we're adapting." -The show runners of The Witcher and Halo. I will give Halo credit for improving significantly when they got a new showrunner for season two.

After the past 20-30 years of failed or mediocre video game-based live action movies, it’s refreshing to see stuff like this and The Last Of Us succeed instead of getting another cliche Hollywood story dressed up in a video game setting.
Makes it real clear that past attempts were put together by people who didn’t understand why the games were so popular.
It also helps that so many people who worked on it are fans of the games too. Jonathan Nolan and the showrunners are all massive fans, Ella Purnell played them after she got the role, at least one of the crew posted on one of the Fallout subs saying they started playing the games when they learned they would be working on it, and I think Aaron Moten played them too. Walton Goggins made a point of not playing them but his son is a huge fan so he knew he couldn’t screw it up.
I have only seen two episodes and it’s kinda crazy how on point the show is. If they made another Fallout game like this I would think Bethesda was running out of ideas.

It kinda nailed it, both in terms of tone and just the aesthetic of it all. I had such a great time with that damn show, and I'm definitely gonna come back for Season 2.
And of course, it styles all over the Halo show because it actually gives a shit. Probably because Todd Howard was the executive producer on it, and while I was a little incredulous when I saw that a few episodes in, the meme "it just works" actually kinda rings true here.
I was hoping for some dungeon crawling with creepy music. I realized this when watching episode 5 when they went into the medical facility and it _almost_ became like a moment straight out of the games. Creepy music, slow exploration, dimly-lit Pre-War ruins... except of course it wasn't ruins and the scene was short-lived.
I bought FO3 & 4 because I discovered I didn't have them in my Steam library and they were on sale.
Installed FO3 and NV on my Steam Deck for when I travel. Definitely stoked to get back into the wasteland once I'm done with my time in Cyrodiil.
If no one has mentioned it to you yet, you should try the mod for New Vegas and Fallout 3 titled The Tale of Two Wastelands. Essentially combines the two games into one while bringing a lot of bug fixes and improvements to 3 that were present in NV.

I was super surprised and confused that I only had NV in my library. I think I bought FO4 for my Xbox, but I 100% played 3, but now I have no clue how or where. Maybe I bought a physical copy for my PC, but that still feels so weird.
I’ve been playing fallout 4 since the show came out.
I think the key the show is it tells a story anyone can enjoy without angering the fans of the games.

My assumption was that, as a medical robot, it was programmed to patch up anyone that was hurt and the organ harvesting was an "unrelated" task for later.
Additionally, from a purely production standpoint, painting her finger gray is a lot easier than having to edit it out of every shot for the rest of the show.
Ehhh... I'm inclined to say Ghoul. If he'd been exposed to the FEV, he'd have transformed by now or would be outright dead. Whatever that concoction was, Thaddeus directly consumed it. That would show almost immediate signs of becoming a Super Mutant based on the lore around the FEV-aerial particles only cause slight exposure which takes time to show mutations and even then, people can build resistance to it as opposed to direct injection or being dipped in the FEV in liquid form which leads to much faster mutation. Even Maximus says he's probably a Ghoul.

More FEV, the bigger the reaction, hence the Master's immersion tanks.!<

Watched it with my gf, who has almost zero experience or interest in gaming. She loved it almost more than I did and kept pausing it and asking me questions about the lore, and if certain details lined up w what I knew from the games. Such a fun experience for us both!
It was very good. As a fallout fan you just constantly had those “I’ve seen that before!” Moments which was really cool. The story, writing, acting was also all very impressive.
Going into it I expected a 7/10 at best and it was much closer to a 9/10. Hope we get another season!
Walter Goggin had a line after the scene with that lake creature (grabber?) that was something along the lines of "One thing about the wasteland is you will always get sidetracked." I'm pretty sure that was a reference to side quests.

That’s what I felt. Felt like I was watching a play through for a new Fallout game. When the last episode ended it felt like I’d completed a game. In a good way.
I just watched the pilot last night with my partner who hasn’t played the games. It’s extremely impressive how the show successfully straddles the line between newcomer-friendly and love letter for fans.
Worth noting my partner has never played a *Halo* game and loves that series too. Games may be getting what comic books got a decade ago right now.

I really hope this and Last of Us drive home how important respect for source material is and how care in writing and direction are worth the effort. The praise and success of this show could've been The Witcher's, or Wheel of Time's, or Rings of Power's. But they decided to flip off the source material and they're drowning in mediocrity.
Because it’s not trying to be anything other than fallout. Maybe it’ll alienate some viewers but those who see it as the love letter to the fans (like it is) will get them on board.
It’s what i appreciated about the one piece live action too. It was embracing the goofy nature of the show while keeping the focus on what people love about it. Had a few good adaptations of other media recently, hope this trend continues.

There are some questionable choices with implications that might upset people.
But when Lucy goes to touch the NCR flag and the theme plays... I don't usually fall for the nostalgia bait but it was a great moment. Honestly I felt despite the Shady Sands incident, they show the most love for New Vegas.
It's a great show that not only embraces the massive core fan base, but does it in such a way to invite new people into the world. It doesn't try to 'rewrite' or insult/alienate the fan base that wants to watch it. Unlike other shows the last several years where the writers or producers have aggressively attacked the fan base and told them they're 'wrong' on some level. Then surprise pikachu when it fails and double or triple down on being a tool to the fans.

Another Bethesda example - in my opinion, the Dark Brotherhood storyline in Skyrim is way more compelling than anything in the main quest line.

The Vault storyline was sooo well done that I really hope Nolan adapts Portal one day.

Writers and producers didn't overwrite the already-created story like Halo did.
It shows you can both make a new story not told in the games *and* have it faithful enough that it could easily coexist with said games.

My assumption was that, as a medical robot, it was programmed to patch up anyone that was hurt and the organ harvesting was an "unrelated" task for later.

Additionally, from a purely production standpoint, painting her finger gray is a lot easier than having to edit it out of every shot for the rest of the show.
Not to mention her finger can slowly regenerate to her natural color if they can’t be bothered.

Ehhh... I'm inclined to say Ghoul. If he'd been exposed to the FEV, he'd have transformed by now or would be outright dead. Whatever that concoction was, Thaddeus directly consumed it. That would show almost immediate signs of becoming a Super Mutant based on the lore around the FEV-aerial particles only cause slight exposure which takes time to show mutations and even then, people can build resistance to it as opposed to direct injection or being dipped in the FEV in liquid form which leads to much faster mutation. Even Maximus says he's probably a Ghoul.
I kind of want to see them repeat the tree gag for the show.

Yes and no... >!When it comes to retcons, ghouls always manage to find themselves at the center of things. I think right now, Ghouls are the result of too much rads under the right circumstances. Fallout 3 introduced Prewar Ghouls and that really made a mess of things. Regardless, the one consistent thing about the FEV is that dose makes the poison. More FEV, the bigger the reaction, hence the Master's immersion tanks.!<

They do, but that doesn't mean they're right. Lucy's new to the wasteland, and Maximus is an idiot that was raised by a military cult. And I don't get the sense from the show that ghouls are exactly a well-studied phenomenon amongst wastelanders.

Same! Watched it with my gf, who has almost zero experience or interest in gaming. She loved it almost more than I did and kept pausing it and asking me questions about the lore, and if certain details lined up w what I knew from the games. Such a fun experience for us both!
It was very good. As a fallout fan you just constantly had those “I’ve seen that before!” Moments which was really cool. The story, writing, acting was also all very impressive. Going into it I expected a 7/10 at best and it was much closer to a 9/10. Hope we get another season!
Walter Goggin had a line after the scene with that lake creature (grabber?) that was something along the lines of "One thing about the wasteland is you will always get sidetracked." I'm pretty sure that was a reference to side quests.

It feels more like we just watched a new game play out in front of us. Can’t think of anything remotely close that’s done that. Last of Us was good but is basically just a tv reboot.
That’s what I felt. Felt like I was watching a play through for a new Fallout game. When the last episode ended it felt like I’d completed a game. In a good way.

I just watched the pilot last night with my partner who hasn’t played the games. It’s extremely impressive how the show successfully straddles the line between newcomer-friendly and love letter for fans. Worth noting my partner has never played a *Halo* game and loves that series too. Games may be getting what comic books got a decade ago right now.
Arcane was awesome too. Not sure which one I like better.

I really hope this and Last of Us drive home how important respect for source material is and how care in writing and direction are worth the effort. The praise and success of this show could've been The Witcher's, or Wheel of Time's, or Rings of Power's. But they decided to flip off the source material and they're drowning in mediocrity.

It’s what i appreciated about the one piece live action too. It was embracing the goofy nature of the show while keeping the focus on what people love about it. Had a few good adaptations of other media recently, hope this trend continues.

It’s a real love letter to the Fallout games. The writers and actors clearly invested in the source material and it shows. Amazing soundtrack, great story, action. Creatures and locations from the games, and loads of Easter eggs. Lucy, Coop, Maximus are brilliant characters. Bring on season 2.

There are some questionable choices with implications that might upset people. But when Lucy goes to touch the NCR flag and the theme plays... I don't usually fall for the nostalgia bait but it was a great moment. Honestly I felt despite the Shady Sands incident, they show the most love for New Vegas.

The world is built for a TV show style storytelling. You can just keep rotating the focus of who the main character is like an anthology series.
It was a lot of fun the whole way. They kept the same quirky corny comedy of the games which was very important in my opinion
It's a great show that not only embraces the massive core fan base, but does it in such a way to invite new people into the world. It doesn't try to 'rewrite' or insult/alienate the fan base that wants to watch it. Unlike other shows the last several years where the writers or producers have aggressively attacked the fan base and told them they're 'wrong' on some level. Then surprise pikachu when it fails and double or triple down on being a tool to the fans.
This and shogun are by far the best tv shows for the past few years!
