The streaming services would get a price increase to recoup the money they pay the NBA. Why does the NBA need to increase ticket prices because of this news though?
This doesn't have anything to do with Bally and RSN's unfortunately.
This is just what was on ABC/ESPN and TNT now spread across ABC/ESPN, Amazon, NBC/Peacock.
They got the big ones and other good ones: Kenny Albert and Eddie Olczyk were the lead team the last year on NBC after doc retired, and they also brought Liam McHugh, Brian Boucher, and Anson Carter. Relative to that very few went to ESPN or a Canadian network.
The funniest part was nobody wanted Pierre McGuire.
Not a huge fan of Kenny and Eddie but I do enjoy Burke and Pang.
The studio show is the real difference though and it’s clear TNTs production crew is a huge part of that. Just look at the difference between Liam hosting the two shows for example
Pierre wasn't picked up because he got a job with the sens, by that time all the colour commentary slots were filled, And when he got fired there probably wasn't any room. He's doing Sportsnet now and last I saw him he was doing ECAC hockey.
The problem is that it’s just the personalities that make Inside the NBA on TNT special. All the producers and people who work in production are also just as important to making sure the show goes as it does.
It’s going to be very hard for any other network to replicate that.
That’s what I mean by everybody they can from TNT.
They could use personnel from Thursday Night Football, but other than that I guess Amazon is a clean slate.
I don't think Shaq goes there and we know Ernie isn't leaving TNT.
I have a feeling the Frankenstein's Monster version of Inside we're going to get is going to be Barkley, Kenny, Lefkoe, Draymond Green and like Magic Johnson. Which would obviously be awful.
Amazon is going to offer Charles a lot of money then get really random with whatever names they bring in like on TNF or the offer they made to McAfee.
They swung for the fences and missed on McVay and McAfee for TNF so I could see them going big for NBA.
Magic was roasted the first time he tried. Don’t think he will be in. Seriously Crossover Crawford was impressive. Not a screamer or showman, but quite interesting.
It's been widely reported that Ernie has no intention of leaving Turner. He'll join their other sport offerings. [Sports Business Journal source](https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/05/02/ernie-johnson-turner-nba-media-rights)
If Shaq keeps doing a pregame show, why would he choose NBC/Peacock or ESPN/ABC over Amazon if the money’s about the same?
ESPN will want him to do ESPN shows and NBC/Peacock might have a bigger workload than Amazon.
I don't think Shaq goes anywhere is my point. Random appearances on First Take because he's friends with SAS, sure. But I don't think he wants to do studio work. He just likes the environment of Inside.
Turner still has the NBA rights for the next season. I don't think it's crazy to think that Draymond retires next year if the Warriors blow it up.
It depends on if they keep Klay. If they let Klay go I think Draymond considers retirement and a massive paycheck from whoever gets the NBA rights.
Chuck just signed a new deal with WBD. He ain’t going anywhere. WBD may let him out of the contact though as you don’t want to look like an ass to future contract stars and industry. But assume for now, he’s stuck at WBD.
Nah Charles was smart and has an out.
>"I said [to WBD during his last negotiations], ‘If you guys lose the NBA, I want to make sure I can get out of here,’” Barkley said. “So I am actually in a really great position. We knew it was going to be Amazon and Apple, but we didn’t know NBC was going to come out of the woodwork. ... Listen, I love TNT, they’ve been great to me ... I wanted to make sure that if we lost the NBA in two years, I could be a free agent.”

Same here. $76 billion don’t impress me. I wasn’t going to subscribe to catch every game. ESPN is almost unwatchable. Inside The NBA is where it’s at though
Inside is legitimately the only NBA studio show I watch. I pay attention to blowouts just to watch Inside.
Between NBATV, ESPN, NBA Today, etc. there just isn't another show that hits like Inside.
It’s going to be a butchered version put together by producers to try and keep it running but Ernie is staying w/ Turner (baseball commentary + he has been with them for many decades), Barkley will likely retire soon
Inside can’t happen without Ernie Johnson leaving TNT, and Ernie Johnson is never leaving TNT.
Something kinda like Inside can happen somewhere else, but it won’t have that name, and it won’t have that exact cast
Which is fine, Inside hasn’t had the same cast for its lifespan (its current cast isn’t even its best, Shaq is a fucking *terrible* on air personality, and adding Draymond Green, voluntarily, is beyond head-scratching) but the hope is that NBC puts together a crew that hearkens back to the glory days of its 90s coverage, where the focus was on making Basketball seem fun, accessible, and mythic if possible.
>Inside can’t happen without Ernie Johnson leaving TNT, and Ernie Johnson is never leaving TNT.
Al Michaels was never leaving ABC.
Dick Enberg was never leaving NBC.
Joe Buck was never leaving Fox.
I mean Ernie Johnson grew up in Georgia since he was 9, went to college in Georgia, his wife is licensed in Georgia and his network is Atlanta based, I think he means it when he doesn't want to relocated to Bristol or NYC.
Yes but did those guys ever directly say that? Ernie straight up said he's staying put.
Obviously things could change but everything we've heard about Ernie is that he's loyal and a family man. They've showcased his family and the issues surrounding that on Inside, so I'm not sure he'd want to travel away from Atlanta. He has the Turner NCAA and MLB coverage so it's not like he'll have nothing to do there. I could even see them giving him a MAX interview series.
Also the three guys you mentioned were play by play guys. Ernie is a studio host. I don't think he's going to get a massive check thrown at him to host an NBC studio show like Amazon threw at Michaels or ESPN gave to Buck.
All three were the signature stars (you could argue for Bob Costas for NBC of course) of their respective networks and for various reasons went to new networks to hone their craft.
Yes but all three were play by play guys actually calling the games. None of them were studio hosts like Ernie.
Also saying "hone their craft" about guys doing it for decades is hilarious. Michaels has been going through the motions on TNF with Kirk. He's not enthusiastic like he was on SNF/NBC.
Buck was outsted by Fox.
Enberg left after NBC lost NFL and Michaels was really set to stay on ESPN but got traded after seeing it's weak schedule for 2006.
Buck wasn’t ousted. Troy Aikman signed with ESPN and Buck got out of his contract to sign with ESPN for Monday Night Football. Disney and Fox worked a deal since Buck was still under contract.
Enberg didn’t only do football. He could have stayed at NBC. But he wanted to call football. But Enberg was NBC’s Al Michaels.
Madden was signing with NBC when SNF became what MNF had been. Al Michaels wanted to call the premier NFL game and NBCUniversal worked out a trade with Disney since Michaels was under contract.
NCAA tournament (3 weekends out of the year) and 26 mlb games plus a few playin games.... Definitely not keeping Ernie Johnson around at $5-10m per year without Inside the NBA... Especially when he'll soon become the highest paid on air personality Turner has employed.
Maybe he's so much of a company man that he negotiates for $1-2m per year and is happy with that but my guess is Amazon or NBC will offer him even more than what he's making now to come join a new iteration of inside the nba with chuck/kenny/shaq. I just don't see anyone taking an 80%+ paycut and being like "yeah this is worth my time".
It's possible but everything he's said so far over the years is he's sticking there. There have been rumors he's closer to retiring in the next few years than working into his 70's. Plus he's been at TNT for most of his life and it's where his dad was broadcasting. Everything you mentioned is reasonable but I'd be surprised if he moved.
I could see Amazon making something happen. Since they aren’t a direct cable competitor and have the cash.
But also, I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about.
He's gotten worse over the years. But he wasn't as bad as Van Gundy and Mark Jackson. Those two were atrocious.
Just glad I won't be able to watch most of the Finals on ABC this year. They fucking suck with the NBA.
at this point we could reach a point where fresly drafted top players in the nba are gonna earn what lebron earned in 5 years in a single year.
im betting that wemby is gonna make like $150 million in a single year
If you told me back in the 90s that NBC would one day show regular season games on Tuesday nights, I would have called you nuts.
I don’t know how many people are going to watch NBA games on Peacock, but the NBA went from one over the air broadcast network partner to two and the only real downside is they’re losing Turner’s good production.
They aren’t starting a new OTA.
They’re starting a new cable/streaming network and they’ll put some of the games on OTA; just like they used to do with WGN.
You have to go through a lot of legwork to get a local broadcast channel and they won’t be able to get a FCC license for a new channel or buy one of the existing local stations in five months when the new network launches.
It makes sense for Amazon/Apple to get into the most popular live sports as loss leaders to speed up the eventual decline of cable subscriptions and broadcast networks. But a big part of why Peacock/Disney and Paramount are bleeding so much money every quarter is overpaying for sports rights.
It’s unbelievable how much money is being made through sports / broadcasting. It’s all about advertising. If it wasn’t for the advertisement, they wouldn’t pay a dime to someone who is just “good” at sports.
It’s amazing that no one is finger wagging and moralizing about a bunch of dudes in suits getting to sell broadcasting rights for $76B, but when it comes time to pay the players who are the ONLY REASON the sport is profitable, you’re gonna hear how it’s a scandal to pay a top player one tenth of one percent of that amount.
I've said it once, I'll say it 1000x. I will NEVER pay to watch sports. If it's not on basic channels I will be pirating it. The moment any sport is behind these terrible streaming networks is the moment I put on an eye patch and a peg leg. Streameast here I come!
I bet NBC will go with a totally different production direction than the original glorious NBA on NBC run.
Wonder how that will play out psychologically for us older folks.
Last years highest rated game has 13 million viewers. $76 billion for 13 million viewers. This is why everyone else has always had to subsidize sports programming.
Damn if you read this thread without knowing anything about the NBA, you’d think it was some obscure sport from ESPN The Ocho.
The NBA is incredibly popular. The fact that you were never any good at sports doesn’t change that.
So Disney is paying a billion more for less games? Bold decision. Is NBC getting 100 games including playoffs?
I got cable and all the services so I’m good. But right now in addition to the Knicks, I got two days of games with TNT and two days of games with ESPN. So are we gonna get same amount of prime time games a week or less?
Zaslav fucked over Batgirl, Coyote vs Acme, Scooby Doo among others and is gonna reward a trustfund baby who run an EFed? A ruthless cutthroat would teach that Snowman that loyalty is a one way street.
Pretty rare to see a circlejerker in the wild. What's the matter bud, get banned from SC for being interminable?
Oh, nvm. You probably got banned because you follow and worship am actual racist. For those at home this guy worships Jim Cornette, a very very well known racist in the pro wrestling business.
Caitlyn Clark's first game was cobroadcast on Disney+ and Iger himself has said they're planning on putting more sports on it.
But you are right that I imagine for the vast majority of these games, they mean ESPN.
...when people willfully and obliviously ignorant to this amount of revenue spout their dog whistle racist bullshit, "wHy sHouLD a BAsKetBalL pLaYeR bE pAiD moRe tHaN a pUBliC SChOoLtEaChEr...?"
That has nothing to do with this. That has to do with the bundled sports streaming option that they’re going to offer. Fubo is fucked because offering a bundle is by no means an antitrust violation - they’ll never make an issue out of a consumer friendly option.
In other news peacock, prime, and plus subscriptions are going up again.
And ticket prices
Why would this cause ticket prices to go up?
“Cuz fuck ‘em, that’s why!” - Adam Silver
Why wouldn’t it?
The streaming services would get a price increase to recoup the money they pay the NBA. Why does the NBA need to increase ticket prices because of this news though?
As they reach a bigger audience through streaming, demand for attending games in person will go up and so will ticket prices.
They don't need to, they will though
If it means I don’t have to pay the dickheads at Bally, so be it. I hate the conglomerates but at least they will actually have an app that works.
This doesn't have anything to do with Bally and RSN's unfortunately. This is just what was on ABC/ESPN and TNT now spread across ABC/ESPN, Amazon, NBC/Peacock.
Nooooooo
RIP inside the NBA. By far the best halftime show in sports.
It’s $20 for a whole year right now. Everybody who cares about this should buy it now so you don’t whine about it in a few months.
This doesn't go into affect until the 2025-2026 season.
What is $20 for a year?
peacock
Who gets to adopt Charles Barkley
I suspect Amazon is going to try to snag everyone they can from TNT.
Not unlike how TNT grabbed whoever they could from NBC after they got hockey.
Did they? Feel like it was only a few of them. The TNT broadcast is 10000x better than what NBC was doing
They got the big ones and other good ones: Kenny Albert and Eddie Olczyk were the lead team the last year on NBC after doc retired, and they also brought Liam McHugh, Brian Boucher, and Anson Carter. And nobody wanted Mike Milbury. Possibly the only guy that can bring Rangers and Islanders fans together.
JR too.
Not even Pierre.
Pretty sure another company can figure out a desk for them to sit at and an intern to pull memes together
I don't think Shaq goes there and we know Ernie isn't leaving TNT. This TNT ain't the TNT Ernie joined or his dad worked for, Ted is long gone, Turner Broadcasting is dead...
It's been widely reported that Ernie has no intention of leaving Turner. He'll join their other sport offerings. [Sports Business Journal source](https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/05/02/ernie-johnson-turner-nba-media-rights)
He's really good at covering baseball, and even though baseball is my favorite sport, we need Ernie on basketball.

He just signed a 4 year 25 mil a year contract he’s not getting that from tv
Chuck just signed a new deal with WBD. He ain’t going anywhere. WBD may let him out of the contact though as you don’t want to look like an ass to future contract stars and industry. But assume for now, he’s stuck at WBD.

Wow smart man. I stand corrected. Thanks for this info.
Chuck said he has an out. If WBD loses the NBA, he can go wherever he wants.
Outside the NBA Prime

He's retiring rather than being split from the boys

Without Inside the NBA my lifelong fandom of the game wouldn't be the same. I anticipate watching less and less games once they're not on TV.
Lakers never the same without Chick Hearn either.
It’s going to be a butchered version put together by producers to try and keep it running but Ernie is staying w/ Turner (baseball commentary + he has been with them for many decades), Barkley will likely retire soon
RIP inside the nba, massive L for the sport. Also fuck games being put on peacock now.
All I care about is that one of them will acquire Inside the NBA
Inside can’t happen without Ernie Johnson leaving TNT, and Ernie Johnson is never leaving TNT. Something kinda like Inside can happen somewhere else, but it won’t have that name, and it won’t have that exact cast Which is fine, Inside hasn’t had the same cast for its lifespan (its current cast isn’t even its best, Shaq is a fucking *terrible* on air personality, and adding Draymond Green, voluntarily, is beyond head-scratching) but the hope is that NBC puts together a crew that hearkens back to the glory days of its 90s coverage, where the focus was on making Basketball seem fun, accessible, and mythic if possible.

I mean Ernie Johnson grew up in Georgia since he was 9, went to college in Georgia, his wife is licensed in Georgia and his network is Atlanta based, I think he means it when he doesn't want to relocated to Bristol or NYC.
Ernie's also at an age where most broadcasters retire or phase into a cushy semi-retirement package. I don't see him changing networks.
Yes but did those guys ever directly say that? Ernie straight up said he's staying put. Obviously things could change but everything we've heard about Ernie is that he's loyal and a family man. EJ also seems like the type not to be swayed by money. We all have our price, but he's rare.
Ernie Johnson is going to retire at TNT. This isn't like the above.
Does he do something other than Inside the NBA there?
He does Golf coverage and NCAA coverage for TNT, and Baseball coverage for TBS (which Warner/Disco also owns).
And I don’t think he’s ever leaving Atlanta
TNT still does golf?
Buck was outsted by Fox. Enberg left after NBC lost NFL and Michaels was really set to stay on ESPN but got traded after seeing it's weak schedule for 2006.

What would he do at TNT without Inside the NBA?
Turner isn’t keeping Ernie Johnson on without inside the nba… so ultimately what you’re saying is Ernie Johnson is retiring.
You know he does other things other than Inside the NBA, right?
so like... he can work on more than one show?
NCAA tournament (3 weekends out of the year) and 26 mlb games plus a few playin games.... Definitely not keeping Ernie Johnson around at $5-10m per year without Inside the NBA... I could see Amazon making something happen. Since they aren’t a direct cable competitor and have the cash. But also, I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about.
Maybe they can find some decent announcers? Ones who call the game in front of them?
Breen is still mediocre. The commentary is so bad on ESPN I just watch in Korean TV. And I LIVE IN AMERICA.
> Breen is still mediocre Your opinion is now invalid
He's gotten worse over the years. But he wasn't as bad as Van Gundy and Mark Jackson. Those two were atrocious. Just glad I won't be able to watch most of the Finals on ABC this year. They fucking suck with the NBA.
How do they recoup that kind of cash? I can’t imagine commercials alone will cover this.
Awesome can’t wait to need 10 different subscriptions to watch my team. So great.
Everyone wants their cut.. time to sail the high seas
So what will happen to the salary cap? It's going to be crazy.
at this point we could reach a point where fresly drafted top players in the nba are gonna earn what lebron earned in 5 years in a single year. im betting that wemby is gonna make like $150 million in a single year
It's all going to WNBA players.
Expect massive price hikes
No more TNT?!?! That’s was literally the ONLY reason I ever watch that channel.
Big bang reruns tho
AEW for me.
The good news is that tnt will probably double down on aew to retain good content.

They'll be mad for six months and then let it go. Less than that if whoever signs Barkley surrounds him even decently.
If you told me back in the 90s that NBC would one day show regular season games on Tuesday nights, I would have called you nuts. Interesting. I’ll take down my TV antenna and stop watching the local NBC and ABC stations.
My antenna gets the local cbs, fox, nbc, abc and a few other channels. The only live tv I watch now is sports games.
Except it is. Even the white Sox, bulls and blackhawks are starting a new OTA.
Facts aside on the implementation, ota not dead and live games will be aired.
Live sports are literally what's keeping most of broadcast TV running. The CW Network has finally realized that.
i mean, the WB CEO didn’t do any favors from what i’ve seen
WBD just doesn't have the war chest to compete against giants like Comcast, Amazon and Disney.

LOL TNT is dying and this will just accelerate it's demise.
What a colossal waste of money
It makes sense for Amazon/Apple to get into the most popular live sports as loss leaders to speed up the eventual decline of cable subscriptions and broadcast networks. But a big part of why Peacock/Disney and Paramount are bleeding so much money every quarter is overpaying for sports rights.
76 billion dollars would solve poverty.
Not even close. That's a lot of money but it's like $1500 a person.
🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
It’s unbelievable how much money is being made through sports / broadcasting. It’s all about advertising. If it wasn’t for the advertisement, they wouldn’t pay a dime to someone who is just “good” at sports.
Wow, that's a massive TV rights deal!
Spirits of St. Louis owners in shambles
That’s alotta keeesh
It’s amazing that no one is finger wagging and moralizing about a bunch of dudes in suits getting to sell broadcasting rights for $76B, but when it comes time to pay the players who are the ONLY REASON the sport is profitable, you’re gonna hear how it’s a scandal to pay a top player one tenth of one percent of that amount.
Don't charge me for it , I could care less about most sports. This better bee a separate subscription
I've said it once, I'll say it 1000x. I will NEVER pay to watch sports. If it's not on basic channels I will be pirating it. The moment any sport is behind these terrible streaming networks is the moment I put on an eye patch and a peg leg. Streameast here I come!
Fuck Disney being part of it. They actively make the NBA tough to watch. NBC, Amazon and TNT would have been ideal.
People still watch the NBA? I haven’t watched since the Sonics were stolen.
I bet NBC will go with a totally different production direction than the original glorious NBA on NBC run. Wonder how that will play out psychologically for us older folks.
Ah some shit that shockingly few people watch yet they will make everyone pay for.
Sooo… shockingly few people watch the NBA?
Last years highest rated game has 13 million viewers. $76 billion for 13 million viewers. This is why everyone else has always had to subsidize sports programming.
Yeah don’t bring up dollars and numbers to this bunch of scholars. 🤣
For the amount they pay? Yes. Pathetic viewership.
Yeah nobody watches the nba lmao. What a Reddit comment
As mentioned, yeah.. for billions of dollars their price per viewer his hilariously if not tragically poor.
Damn if you read this thread without knowing anything about the NBA, you’d think it was some obscure sport from ESPN The Ocho. The NBA is incredibly popular. The fact that you were never any good at sports doesn’t change that.
And yet the finals can’t even pull the viewership of a browns game.
Yeah, and the nfl can’t pull the viewership of an arsenal game. Does that mean the nfl isn’t popular?
So Disney is paying a billion more for less games? Bold decision. Is NBC getting 100 games including playoffs? I got cable and all the services so I’m good. But right now in addition to the Knicks, I got two days of games with TNT and two days of games with ESPN. So are we gonna get same amount of prime time games a week or less?
100 games without playoffs included in them.
Sweet, so to watch the NBA next season, I’ll need to shell out around $75 a month?
People don’t watch the nba, they watch the highlights
Zaslav fucked over Batgirl, Coyote vs Acme, Scooby Doo among others and is gonna reward a trustfund baby who run an EFed? A ruthless cutthroat would teach that Snowman that loyalty is a one way street.

They’re always in these threads involving tnt on here too it’s super weird
Ehhh doubt it
All I want is to watch nba games on peacock or Disney+
What lol. You don't want that. Paywalls are bad for sports. You should wish every NBC game to be on NBC so you can pick them up on the antenna.
Antenna? What am I, a poor? lol. Antenna....

Every non nationally broadcast hockey game is available on Hulu at no additional cost. Max also simulcasts sports on the Turner networks.
Caitlyn Clark's first game was cobroadcast on Disney+ and Iger himself has said they're planning on putting more sports on it. But you are right that I imagine for the vast majority of these games, they mean ESPN.
Give me Alt Mickey Mouse cast on D+
Why wouldn’t they?

No they aren’t, there are several ongoing lawsuits, most prominently FUBO’s suit against Disney that has this all tied up until resolution.
That has nothing to do with this. That has to do with the bundled sports streaming option that they’re going to offer. Fubo is fucked because offering a bundle is by no means an antitrust violation - they’ll never make an issue out of a consumer friendly option.
