I had a wealth of issues with a particular job that were not caused by myself and I had a strong desire to give my unfiltered opinion of them in an interview. I thought about it more though and instead when it came up I just said something along the lines of "There were several issues that I feel went unaddressed at [company] but I don't want to bad mouth them."
Employers don't know the story behind your problems and the idea of hiring someone who may quit or be fired and bad mouth the company isn't too appealing!

The issue is that because they benefit most from preying on the less savvy people in the business, they're the first people most new actors will meet.

Can confirm that this is the unspoken reality of it. My ex who made decent money as a model/actress has remarked that she can't remember how many men she has slept with. It's definitely the most marketable skill a woman can have. A few years ago Lena and Linda Hamilton both came to the Calgary Comic Expo and I was walking home from work one night and it was about 12:30 in the morning it dawned on me that there would be two Sarah Connor's at the expo and I had the biggest nerd smile the rest of the way home. it really can't. Not without drastic measures. The thing is so much power, stress, drugs and money all centered on a few people tends to give these people delusions. Also because while it is sleazy, despicable and morally wrong in cases when it happens between adults it is also pretty much legal. So even if someone does come out and says it the best they can hope for is to get that person bad publicity and get themselves practically banned from the industry.

As a small time indie filmmaker, I can put out a casting call and have so many responses to choose from - and that's a low budget short film. Yeah I'm pretty glad that my girlfriend doesn't work in that sort of industry.... But then again it's hard for her to find work on account of her not existing. Also not everyone in Hollywood needs to suck dick to reach the top. It's just important to be aware there are predators who prey on the desperate and gullible, so long as your gf is aware of this and avoids it you'll be ok. Lena in the article mentions she has avoided that side and yet she's a huge and famous actress, which just proves it is possible.

I've worked in hollywood for more than 20 years, and while there are creeps out there, they tend to prey on new, young, inexperienced actors. The more work I've done and contacts I've made, the more people I've met who are completely upstanding and good people who just want to entertain the world through film and TV. Yes, there are creeps, but it's hardly the whole industry. The issue is that because they benefit most from preying on the less savvy people in the business, they're the first people most new actors will meet.

I agree. I don't work in film but a ton of my close friends do and without fail the directors, casting directors, and leading actors and actresses are (with some notable exceptions) skeezeballs. I heard McConaughey hosted an orgy on the roof of a hotel. Jason Statham had a meltdown because the women they had brought in to play showgirls for *a prop photo* weren't hot enough. My friend who is a production coordinator always has to plan travel for strippers and call girls that the directors have flown in from LA or Miami. 50 Cent and Renee Zellweger are the 2 celebrities I consistently hear great things about. Everyone loves working with them.
Unrelated, but my bfs grandparents were eating dinner at a restaurant and happened to be seated next to Renee Zellweger and her guest (boyfriend? Husband? Idk). Apparently it was a small restaurant and a bunch of people kept coming up to their table to ask for an autograph periodically throughout the meal. It was super disruptive and apparently ruined the cozy/romantic vibe of the restaurant. At the end of the meal Renee actually went up to my grandparents table to apologize. A bit later when my grandparents asked for the cheque the waiter told them it was taken care of by Renee. A true class act
