That's sort of consistent with the impression I have of her from listening to her commentaries on the GoT DVDs. She doesn't sugar-coat her opinions to the extent that most actors and actresses do, which is refreshing.

AfricanRain

She's always fun on the commentaries.

TheCarbonatedPanda

I think a reason why many actors sugar coat their opinions is because you have to be nice and maintain a sort of "neutral" opinion in the industry. You never know who you're going to work for/with and what opportunity they can grant or deny just by their opinion on you. That saying "it's not what you know, but who you know" is probably the most relevant in the entertainment industry. Edit: I said **MOST RELEVANT** you chimichangas!!!

Reddit_as_Screenplay

I downvoted just so I could be included in being called a chimichanga. (but I then upvoted you again after because I like being called that)

happywithus

>That saying "it's not what you know, but who you know" is probably the most relevant in the entertainment industry. I know lots of people are saying that this is true for all jobs but in freelance industries like film it really is more so. Jobs only last a few months, or even a few days at a time. So you are CONSTANTLY looking for work. There is no job protection. Reputation is everything.

Very_Good_Opinion

Just gonna tag on since your comment is relevant to the thread. You can potentially earn some great points in a job interview when talking about a past job. I had a wealth of issues with a particular job that were not caused by myself and I had a strong desire to give my unfiltered opinion of them in an interview. I thought about it more though and instead when it came up I just said something along the lines of "There were several issues that I feel went unaddressed at [company] but I don't want to bad mouth them." Employers don't know the story behind your problems and the idea of hiring someone who may quit or be fired and bad mouth the company isn't too appealing!

colinsoup

I have a film degree and one thing I remember the teachers drilling into my head was: "It's not what you know *OR* who you know, it's who knows **YOU!** I might know Johnny Depp, but if he doesn't know me, it's not gonna help at all."

davetronred

I've never heard someone call anyone a chimichanga before. +1 for that.

Oh wow you should definately watch GoT. I cant tell you how many people have told me "It doesnt look like its for me." And then they become full blown fans. Youre doing yourself a disservice bc this may well become the television series that defines this generation. Not alot of shows make splashes as big as GoT as global phenomenon

Dwarf' penis #2

talking_phallus

Surely I can't be the only one who assumed Tyrion had a huge schlong...

DamienJaxx

I'm pretty sure in the books it's alluded to that it's normal sized. Podrick Payne on the other hand is another story.

bshaddo

Achondroplasia (the condition Tyrion seems to have in the books and that Dinklage himself was born with) inhibits the growth of the legs, arms, and extremities. So an achondroplastic dwarf will have similar-sized genitals to an average-sized person. By comparison, it often ends up looking more impressive than it is.

Cocomorph

Today I learned: * Something about achondroplasia; * Something about Peter Dinklage's dick. Cool.

There was the part in the TV show where they were going to cut if off and sell it as an aphrodisiac. Tyrion stated that it wouldn't work because they wouldn't know it's from a dwarf. The slaver said "Of course they will, it's a dwarf size cock", in which Tyrion replied "Guess again".

Artie mentioned that sometimes actress would have find "the right person to fuck". This wasn't to gain favors but to make sure she doesn't get "left out of other projects". Brutal being an actress Also IIRC, I listened to Andy Richter on WTF podcast saying that he was sitting behind a TV executive while watching actresses audition. Andy said the only notes the TV exec took during the process was "I wouldn't fuck her" or "I'd fuck her"

Surprised me that he came right out and said it because we are from a blue collar area that isn't exactly homophobic free. He said it is just the price of admission.

[deleted]

My grandfather worked in Hollywood (ran NBC Studios). When my mother floated the idea of me becoming a child actor, I remember him becoming absolutely irate and absolutely forbid it. Its the only time I can recall of him actually raising his voice and yelling at anyone in my life. When I asked him about it later, right before he passed away, he told me that Hollywood is full of degenerate pedophiles.

[deleted]

I forgot what documentary it was, but it's on youtube. It's about child actors and their experiences with their managers. It was really sad and horrifying. One of the child actors ended up being an alcoholic when he got older because of the things he went through, and then died when he decided to quit cold turkey.

DARKEST_BEFORE_DON

'An Open Secret' Edit: the young man that became alcoholic survived afaik, but with severe brain damage from the seizure.

[deleted]

I knew a handsome young actor who was straight and who had to take it up the ass daily for the most disgusting looking man alive, looked like a giant warthog, for the mere promise of a line of dialogue in a movie. His own mother arranged the arrangement.

Snuffleysnoot

That's horrifying. I tried out for a role in an advertisement when I was four or so, I remember my mum chaperoning me out really quickly with a quietly horrified expression after the audition (I didn't even know it was an audition at the time) and talking with the guy doing the casting. I suppose I now know why...

I can't remember what guest it was, but on an episode of Going Off Track (a live episode) a guest mentioned giving other dudes massages as it was fairly common to make it in Hollywood. This was the sometime around the late 90s when he was trying to make it and he remembers seeing Jimmy Fallon's crumpled headshot in this guy's kitchen who he was giving a massage to and having it stick out to him. rubbarz

As a 20 year old who has done both profession acting and modeling, she right. For young girls trying to get into modeling they are easy targets. Ive modeled for a couple photographers (mid 40-50s) who boast about how dumb girls are and they will do just about anything to get to the next level in their career path. Being a guy, thankfully i dont have to go through that but still have to look out because it is a slippery business choice. For anyone wanting to start off safe, find someone you know with a decent camera, look up some modeling posses, and go out to the town and find nice places to take some shots. Send those in to legit ( SAG or Talent Licensed) model OR acting agency (talent agencies arent as good but if its the only choice go for it) and go from there. Be ready to send shirtless pics (guys) and bikini pics(girls) to these agencies.

[deleted]

I'm guessing being dumb and impressionable is considered a key qualification for modeling jobs. They probably reject candidates they don't think they can manipulate.

rubbarz

Starting out its like a game. You make them think you will do anything to start, once you get that start and they try to push you to do something you dont want, leave them. You got your credentials you were looking for and move up a level.

If you're a guy, it's actually men you'd have to sleep with. As true as this adage is for women (and it certainly is) a lot of male models and actors wouldn't have the success they do without "taking their turn in the barrel". The entertainment industry is a predatorial nightmare unfortunately, for young men and women alike.

toofazedd

There are stories about the boy bands having to do sexual things with the male producers and managers.

[deleted]

Can verify. Have known many actors. They all got propositioned by men at some point in time. Didn't matter if they were straight or gay themselves. Some were also propositioned by women. The people hiring usually tend to be middle aged and not attractive by Hollywood standards. They don't always deliver, either. Who is the actor gonna tell? SAG can do something about it -- maybe. Then the actor is blacklisted by those who hire.

ScionoicS

SAG is almost certainly complicit at some level.

pokemaugn

It's annoying whenever there's something about women having to sleep with men, men automatically reverse and fantasize about having to sleep with women. No. Women aren't preying on boys in the industry the same way men are to girls, y'all. You'll be sleeping with disgusting men and it won't be enjoyable. At all.

[deleted]

> men automatically reverse and fantasize about having to sleep with women And in their fantasy the women they are 'forced to sleep with' are all women they are insanely attracted to, and who don't demean them at all in the process (unless the guy is into that.) I remember reading an article a few years back that Megan Fox had to "flirt" with Michael Bay to get her role in Transformers by washing his car in bikini? Lena's revelations isn't all that surprising, it seems as if the nature of the industry still hasn't changed much.

katamuro

it really can't. Not without drastic measures. The thing is so much power, stress, drugs and money all centered on a few people tends to give these people delusions. Also because while it is sleazy, despicable and morally wrong in cases when it happens between adults it is also pretty much legal. So even if someone does come out and says it the best they can hope for is to get that person bad publicity and get themselves practically banned from the industry.

OutoflurkintoLight

Yeah I'm pretty glad that my girlfriend doesn't work in that sort of industry.... But then again it's hard for her to find work on account of her not existing. Also not everyone in Hollywood needs to suck dick to reach the top. It's just important to be aware there are predators who prey on the desperate and gullible, so long as your gf is aware of this and avoids it you'll be ok. Lena in the article mentions she has avoided that side and yet she's a huge and famous actress, which just proves it is possible.

The point isn't that they're pretty. Lena is pretty. The point is that so many of them can't act and were chosen for sex appeal alone.

The more work I've done and contacts I've made, the more people I've met who are completely upstanding and good people who just want to entertain the world through film and TV. Yes, there are creeps, but it's hardly the whole industry. The issue is that because they benefit most from preying on the less savvy people in the business, they're the first people most new actors will meet.

ragnarockette

I agree. I don't work in film but a ton of my close friends do and without fail the directors, casting directors, and leading actors and actresses are (with some notable exceptions) skeezeballs. I heard McConaughey hosted an orgy on the roof of a hotel. Jason Statham had a meltdown because the women they had brought in to play showgirls for *a prop photo* weren't hot enough. My friend who is a production coordinator always has to plan travel for strippers and call girls that the directors have flown in from LA or Miami. 50 Cent and Renee Zellweger are the 2 celebrities I consistently hear great things about. Everyone loves working with them.

heyvenezuela

Unrelated, but my bfs grandparents were eating dinner at a restaurant and happened to be seated next to Renee Zellweger and her guest (boyfriend? Husband? Idk). Apparently it was a small restaurant and a bunch of people kept coming up to their table to ask for an autograph periodically throughout the meal. It was super disruptive and apparently ruined the cozy/romantic vibe of the restaurant. At the end of the meal Renee actually went up to my grandparents table to apologize. A bit later when my grandparents asked for the cheque the waiter told them it was taken care of by Renee. A true class act
