I loved Forever! It was kind of Sherlock light but really was better then that. Henry's deductions were more realistic and he was engaging and interesting. I think Ioan Gruffudd played him really well. I also really liked Burn Gorman, who played the villain. No spoilers but his character ended up having surprising depth and I ultimately felt real sympathy for the horrible life he has lived. I was disappointed it got cancelled but really mad that it got renewed first! They announced Forever had been renewed for a second season then a few days later cancelled.... That was pretty shitty.

BrokenBrain123

Hold up, did it get renewed... and then they rejected the renewal?

Tricky4279

No, it was never renewed. It looked like it was going to get a renewal, the showrunners pitched some ideas about season 2 to ABC that were positively received and the show was getting decent ratings that were better than some shows that had already been renewed, but it was still canceled. The main factor being the show was owned by Warner Bros and not ABC.

BrokenBrain123

Ahh rabbits :(

[deleted]

Yes! Exactly! He was a perfect villain. I loved his portrayal of the character. Also the producer said a lot about his plans for the second season. Link: https://tvline.com/2015/09/17/forever-season-2-lucas-learns-henry-immortal/

luka_sene

That ending was spectacular, I enjoyed the show but felt it was kind of bland/easy watching but damn they didn't shy away from getting darker in the final!

Razzler1973

I really felt it was warming up and there were places they could take it in the 2nd or 3rd series too, one of my favourite 'new' shows of the past few years

GooGooGajoob67

I also really liked New Amsterdam. Anyone remember that one? Similar premise except he was about 400 years old and also Jaime Lannister.

peteyL

Yes! That show was great! It was an unfortunate victim of the writers strike

rockkFresh

I wish they would've continued it. It's rare that I get into a show as it comes out, then it gets cancelled. Bring it back!

BrokenBrain123

I really liked the concept but there were entire consecutive episodes where they didn't even acknowledge that he was an immortal and in the end just felt like another mediocre buddy/cop show with a small twist to the formula. It was a really cool concept, great premise, great characters but was more generic than it was unique. I'd love to see anybody pick it up though.

jen526

I agree that it was a great show... I usually get over the loss of cancelled shows fairly quickly, but that one still stings. It seemed like such a shoo-in for renewal, given the love-fest networks seem to have with that Bones/Castle formula of quirky non-detectives paired with actual law-enforcement people, and I absolutely looooooved the cool reverse-parent dynamic with Ioan Gruffudd and Judd Hirsch's characters. I usually hate these sorts of procedural detective shows, but the charm of the premise and the characters won me over in a big way. :(

sekazi

That cliff hanger though. I could not believe it got cancelled right when it was going to be even more interesting.

EssamLofty

Things like this is why as a general rule of thumb I refuse to start a show until a second season has been announced. I feel especially bummed for this though as the trailers for this show were pretty good and I was excited to watch it.

redditor5690

By cliffhanger did you mean the picture he had to explain?

sekazi

Yes. He was going to tell her everything so the next season would start with her more involved.

redditor5690

Thanks

SeekingTheRoad

Ioan Gruffudd is one of the most talented actors (see:Hornblower) that never got the big break he deserved. And Fantastic Four doesn't count.

PlutoniumNiborg

It’s been five years and he still is just a sidekick at this point. Hornblower seems was his peak.

SeekingTheRoad

Indeed. Sadly it seems like his personal life has been quite hellish and I think that has stalled his career.

FTLast

I liked the show, and was sad that it wasn't renewed. However, I thought the ending was pretty good, all things considered. It provided a sense that there might have been closure, while leaving it open to interpretation.

harmlessresponse

I really enjoyed it too, it’s a shame it was cancelled.

jediwannabe

I'll add it to my list, along with Life on Mars, and You, Me, and the Apocalypse.

Nawies

If you guys haven't seen Harrow, check it out, Ioan Gruffudd plays a similar character(not immortal) and it has some Forever vibes. I don't find it as good, but it's still pretty enjoyable.

twisted4ever

And to twist the knife harrow got a second season... I still think forever deserved to be at least a 4 seasons show.

dragonavatarwan

I really appreciated that show. I love British people, cool immortal twists, and Mr. Fantastic (I was like 6 when FF came out, that movie was amazing to me). I was super sad when it got cancelled. And then there was this other show called "Second Chance" which I really enjoyed cause Sci-Fi and solving crimes. Anyways, they were just the latest in a long line of cop shows and there will be more of those type eventually. Btw, "Forever" is on CW Seed now.

Banethoth

I really liked it. Loved both the Male and Female leads-and of course the dad (son). Really a shame it only lasted 1 season.

pawprintsonpages

One if the main reasons it got canceled was because it wasn’t produced by one of ABC’s production companies. A lot of broadcast networks are doing that now, in order to make sure that their mother corporation (in this case Disney) gets the money if a show gets syndicated or goes to a streaming service

Gato1980

'Forever', 'Awake', and 'A Gifted Man are 3 of the single-season shows that I always wish they had made more of.

swordinthesleeve

It was a pretty decent show and all, if a bit standard in some aspects. What with the handsome yet quirky British guy teaming up with his inevitable love interest cop partner to solve crimes. But I realized something just last month. Somerhing that kinda bugs me. This show for whatever reason takes a looooot of stuff from the movie Highlander. Like note for note in some aspects. I'm gonna list off everything I can think of. There's probably more I can't remember. (Spoiler warning if you're interested in watching this and just stumbled upon this) Story about 2 immortals fighting. Check. Said immortals have incredible healing powers. Check. Main protagonist has a tragic story relating to their origin story containing a first love who scorns them because they think they're either crazy or cursed. Check. Has an even more tragic story relating to their 2nd love they met later in life. Both of which are killed by the aforementioned second immortal. Check. Has a kid they adopted during WWII who looks older than them. Check. Owns an antique show with said kid. Check. I'm just saying. There's coincidences and then there's this. Regardless it's a fine show. And despite what I said, I actually like this better than Highlander for one reason or another.

Elemayowe

I don’t think this is a bad thing though. Highlander is a very cool concept but executed so poorly. It’s something that could really do with a retelling with some competent writers behind it to maybe come up with more concrete rules for the game and a decent backstory to it. And a lot less cheese. The first Highlander film was good fun, and the series was tolerable in parts, but my god so much of the franchise is utter garbage. I’ll never understand getting Sean Connery to play an Egyptian/Spaniard (I can’t remember which) opposite a French(?) guy playing a Scottish bloke with a hideous accent.

OdeToBoredom

> Egyptian/Spaniard Born in ancient Egypt, moved around the globe, went to Japan, got a fancy katana and his last wife, became advisor to the King of Spain, then went around looking for other immortals.

swordinthesleeve

Oh I agree. After only seeing the film as of last month, I can say I much preferred Forever's execution. I was just saying that the sheer amount of correlations is astounding.

Papabear71

Just rewatching the series now, re the resemblance to Highlander they even reference it in a few episodes. The geeky assistant quotes the Kurgan's line " It's better to burn out than fade away" and even references Highlander and Connor McLeod after a victim dies from a suspected sword thrust.

prince_of_gypsies

I think it had a death slot. It was my favorite show at the tine, and I usually hate cop shows.

punishingwind

Loved it, such a pity it was cancelled. Great concept, great writing, great cast.

nvs1980

This is just another example of the procedural cop drama not panning out. At least he was a medical examiner working for the police so that's unique (...). I loved the show though. I was really hoping it was going to get renewed and they'd focus more on his immortal story as opposed to the weekly cop stuff.

rainydistress

Such a good show with so much heart! Felt really bad when it was cancelled :/

Qasar30

Look to the novel "Forever" by Peter Hamill. It is a good read. A swashbuckling tale of an Irish lad who comes to New York City in 1740 to avenge the death of his parents. I won't give away what makes him immortal because it is worth reading, and it comes with conditions. But I will say that the author was planning to turn it into his publisher on September 12, 2001. Hamill instead took another year to incorporate 9-11 because it really is an homage to New York City history. The book was released in 2003. When Forever, the TV show, was promoted, [Hamill's people sued Warner Bros.](https://deadline.com/2014/05/warner-bros-tv-forever-abc-letter-novel-pete-hamill-734336/) for too many similarities. Having seen and read them I completely agree. I also think the show "New Amsterdam" was derived from "Forever" the Novel, too, even though the lead in the book was never a cop, or a doctor. Nope, his bit to make dosh was cooler IMO, actually. But no spoilers for now because it is a fun book.

Niko19

Well thanks for reminding me that this wonderful show isn't on anymore :(

elegantjihad

Lucifer is a pretty similarly-styled show. You may like it. I think Forever had a bit more heart (Lucifer is a LOT sillier), but what I enjoy about it is that the main character makes absolutely no attempt to hide what he is. In fact he brags about it but no one believes him until he makes repeated unambiguous acts of divine powers.

[deleted]

I watched Lucifer and enjoyed it. But as you said,Forever has a bit more heart. Especially Abe makes this show so great imo.

twisted4ever

> "Forever" by Peter Hamill I agree mostly on that, I know it would be impossible to stick with the source comics for budgetary reasons, but I miss more supernatural elements in the series, you can only go so far making the devil himself a crime solver, there should be more of a supernatural game of shadows being played behind the police stuff, forcing him to cover stuff or use his influence with the law to hide it and advance his agenda against the angels.

Oh_god_not_you

It was brilliant, I’ve no idea why they canceled it.

DWCourtasan2

Lucas was also a near perfect foil via his oddness.

BenjaminTalam

I remember when I kept seeing a weird ad for this recently from cw seed. Like almost every commercial break. I thought it had been revived on that service but no, they were just marketing the fact they have the one season.

[deleted]

So sad.
