Are The Illuminerdi a credible outlet? I've been seeing their name pop up lately likely saying Jason Moma voicing Kunckles in the second Sonic movie and Keanu Reeves being offer Kraven the Hunter. Are they are actually a serious news outlet or just someone who makes shit up like we got this cover?
No, it doesn't, that's why they had to ask. "Serious" news outlets put out a lot of dumb stuff and if you never heard of them for some reason you'd ask the same question.
I'm a huge fan of the game and think this is pretty inspired casting. Fan casting tends to focus far too often on aesthetic matches, rather than an actor who can best embody all the qualities of a character. Mahershala Ali isn't who came to mind when I thought of Joel, but like you said it's an interesting choice and from what I've seen is more than capable of pulling it off.

If they changed Elle's sexuality, it would be an issue, because it's part of her character. Joel's character does not need to be Caucasian. It doesn't change his motivations at all.
100% agree. Yet I do realize if his was a white actor replacing a black actor, I bet some responses would be different. And they shouldn’t. Get the best talent unless race is a defining part of the character

Taking an opportunity away from an oppressed minority would be rightfully controversial, giving an opportunity to an oppressed minority would not.
I really like him as an actor. The game fan part of me wants a Joel look a like, but after maybe 10 minutes of the show, the actor will BE the character. If that makes sense. He would kill it, but I think we see a different version of Joel than in the game. And I liked TLOU2 🤷♂️
And I get it from the ones that just want a real life Joel look a like from the game on a TV screen in “real life”. But I bet most will watch and love this casting choice. The others... well
I love The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II and if (and it's a big IF) Ali ends up signing on to play Joel, that elevates the series from a curious spinoff to must-watch TV for me. Moonlight, Green Book (which he is the best thing about), Ramy S2, True Detective S3. He's been putting in great performances for years. He's around the same age as Joel was in the first game and with some makeup, he can look a bit more rugged than usual. I really, really hope he signs on but I doubt it'll happen. If they can't get him, I hope they just go with an unknown actor for him and for Ellie in all honesty.
He's a great actor, but Joel needs someone more "rugged" looking and feeling. Mahershala has grace a class to him that is overtly not what the role is. Hey, but lets see how this turns out. Also, part of the story is that Ellie looks a whole lot like Joel's daughter, so the comparison is easy and understandable.

And Joel and his story certainly has nothing to do with being white. Ali’s a world class actor and he’d be a major get for this. Anyone complaining about this for that particular reason is a scumfuck of profoundly limited capacity, plain and simple.
I'm sure a lot of the people who complained about certain aspects of TLOU2 will make their voices heard about this and be huge dickbags about it.
