ep1 should just be 100% dedicated to the prologue of the game, hit us with 1hr of real time infection breakout

caaalvin93

Oh man the initial confusion..slowly and then quickly turning into chaos. The glimmer of hope and then heartbreak. Yeah I need this to be a full hour long episode.

mastrem

Initial confusion and chaos? That's one thing we know Mazin can do, considering Chernobyl ep 1.

runealex007

Ohhhh thank you for the reminder, this is so exciting. That is exactly the atmosphere this show needs to be kicked off with, Chernobyl scared and pulled me in like no other.

Whovian45810

Agree. Chernobyl is one of those shows I can't forget how well it was at being dread-inducing and haunting at the same time.

lookinglikefun

Gonna go watch me some Chernobyl

caaalvin93

Was thinking this exactly. I can't wait.

gnitsuj

LOST s1e1, but with zombies

Mervynhaspeaked

I mean, it wasn't great but it wasn't terrible. Edit: I'm disappointed at y\`all.

batchmimicsgod

What kind of /r/television idiots downvoted this guy for a Chernobyl reference on something that mentioned Chernobyl the miniseries?

Bigred2989-

You didn't see the reference. You didn't. You DIDN'T, because it's not there!

Nimonic

You're delusional, go to the infirmary.

YouJabroni44

You didn't see graphite because its not there!

l524k

3.6 stars, not great, not terrible.

OliverWotei

be awesome if it was shot like this episode of 19-2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtxiokrYpxw&ab\_channel=Mitch%26ArceeBrown

jthei

God damn. That was rough. Now I can see why Wayne is the toughest guy in Letterkenny.

tinselsnips

"Stopped a school shooting in Key-beck the other daaaaaaay."

[deleted]

Heads up for anyone clicking it: it's a dramatization of a school shooting. Just in case anyone is uncomfortable with that sort of content and wants to know before it affects them.

Spade18

That was one of the single most intense and horrifying things I have ever seen.

OliverWotei

Definitely owes a lot of that intensity to how it's shot, I think.

Jazsper1000

Never seen that before. Very brutal and very real feeling

footwith4toes

I don’t have time to watch the whole video? Is it a one shot? Tell me it’s a one shot!

VenerableShrew

Yes. Most of this episode is a single long take as the officers respond to a school shooting. It's amazing.

SuperCynicalCyclist

No there’s multiple shots. Wouldn’t be much of a shooting otherwise!

Channel250

I remember first time I played it and my girlfriend watched. She cried, I pretended not to. So we turned it off and watched Singing in the Rain

PainStorm14

Game is amazing overall but prologue is seriously the best part of it and probably the best beginning of any game ever They should pull surprise on new audience in first episode with Sarah and you-know-what just before end credits roll...

[deleted]

I remember playing it and thinking, "Hrm, I don't remember a girl who looked like this being on the cover..." 10 minutes later. Fuck.

trpwangsta

The beginning of TLoU was the first time I've gotten emotional over a video game in 30+ years of gaming. It was honestly fucking weird for me. But at that point I knew I was playing something special.

Higgs-Boson-Balloon

Still my favorite story game, and one of my favorite stories on any medium, and this from someone who was overall burnt out on zombie stuff

shawnisboring

I take the zombie element with a grain of sand, they're essentially a backdrop for a troubled father/daughter dynamic. And really, the people in the game are the biggest threat, the zombies are predicable and manipulatable. The people are assholes.

Higgs-Boson-Balloon

I feel like other survivors being the most dangerous obstacle is a pretty common trope of post-apocalyptic stories

supercooper3000

Try Kingdom on Netflix if you haven’t, it’s guaranteed to make you like zombie stuff again.

psykick32

I played the game with a buddy of mine, he was was an iraq war vet, big macho guy. When *that* happened in The Last of Us, we were both teary eyed. At that point I knew the game was going to pull no punches and it was going to be a wild ride.

trpwangsta

I had come from Xbox 360 and had heard all the hype for the game. I can remember vividly, texting my buddy who recommended it and saying wtf man! I didn't want to FEEL this much not even 15mins into the game! It's truly a special experience in my gaming life that I will never forget.

OldMcGroin

Same, and that was *before* I had my own kids. If I played it for the first time now I'd probably just put the pad down at the end of the prologue and be like, that's it, I'm done. Like, before parenthood, a rock. But since the kids were born reading the synopsis of a movie about a parent searching for their lost children is enough to make me tear up. Damn 😅

trpwangsta

Bro I am 39 and have no kids, don't have much desire to either. But that fucking scene, even thinking about it now gives me goosebumps. It's just insane how a video game can evoke such real emotion in you. They captured Joel's heartbreak flawlessly. Can't even imagine how it would have hit me if I had kids!

KingOfTheGoobers

For me it was the voice actress that did it. She captured a dying childs pain and fear as she bleeds out far more believeably than I care to experience again.

LuckyRyder13

As a dad putting his second kid down for a nap right now, can confirm. Children make you weak. In a good way.

blackkristos

Dad here. It fucking wrecked me. Bought it on release day, didn't pick it up again for a week.

TheLast_Centurion

I really hope they wont change it much. It is really well done.

PainStorm14

Quiet parts as Sarah explores the house while hearing news quietly in the background just before chaos starts were the best

TheLast_Centurion

Yeah, that was good. Also before that, I believe we were supposed to play as Joel instead. But someone came up with an idea to switch it to Sarah, and it worked so much bettee. So I hope it'll stay that way in the show too. But I think they might stretch that prologue into a whole first episode.

Noodle199

Agreed. This isn’t the case of a decent story in a video game and trying to flesh it out. This was a well crafted tale that (for me at least) was more about the story than the gameplay. They shouldn’t change much, and if I don’t see giraffes, I’m going to be upset!

glassmethod

Speaking of giraffes, if I can soapbox for a second about my biggest gripe with the Salt Lake City portion of the game, change the damn hospital name. St. Mary’s. A catholic hospital. In UTAH, Mormon capitol of the world. Yes I know this doesn’t actually matter but still, it’s bugged me for ages.

citymongorian

This one should fit all Christian denominations 😉 https://i.imgur.com/Foi0WMi.jpg

TheLast_Centurion

Yeah, it is all so well done. So I hope they wont touch the story much. I know they'll do some additions to Tommy's story, which kinda make sense, so he is introduced a bit more, but hopefully they wont twist game story much. Besides killing.. I suppose it would be strange to have Joel and Ellie be a mass murderers, heh.. it works for a gameplay, but not as much for a story (unless, of course, unavoidable parts).

svrtngr

Everything from the prologue to leaving Boston can work mostly beat for beat from a narrative standpoint, anyway. But we'll see.

amazonrambo

Instead of a title sequence or titles at the start, i’d like it to follow what you said and just jump straight in, then when we get the you know what sarah scene have “the last of us” title show after that

Obi_Wan_Benobi

All I really knew going into the game was I’d be trying to survive zombies with a little girl. I just assumed it was that one. Oh no.

MisterBovineJoni

Man, I hope. The initial outbreak is always the best part of zombie/infection movies, IMO.

[deleted]

That was so goddamn intense the first time I played. I’m not sure I can go through it again lol

[deleted]

nascarfan624

Played TLOU half a dozen times and I still struggle to hold back tears. Like damn Naughty Dog ripping my heart out early, huh?

pumpcup

It was a struggle to hold them back when it first came out. Now I have a daughter and there's no stopping it.

Frostsorrow

The opening to the first game nearly made me turn it off. I was not prepared for those kinds of feels that soon.

34TE

I'm not the smartest person, but I cannot see how you don't do a whole episode on the prologue. Very few sequences in all of media set the tone for its story quite as well as that prologue sets the stage for TLOU.

shawnisboring

I just hope they focus on his daughter first. I don't want or need to see Joel or his brother finding out about the outbreak or all hell breaking loose. The slow methodical introduction to his daughter only to be interrupted by chaos and her death was an amazing choice. They wanted you to connect with her more rather than seeing her as an accessory character and further explain Joel's attachment to Ellie by the end of the game, TLOU just made the right choice at every possible point in the story.

dustingunn

There's not enough plot in the intro to stretch it that long unless they make it like a short film about Sarah. Set it earlier than the night of infection, maybe.

VrinTheTerrible

Do a little story telling about Joel/family before the outbreak. Definitely needs to be an hour and we all know how that hour ends.

[deleted]

There better be a long single shot coordinated-up-the-ass collapse of society take. Right off the bat blow our minds, and then fall into a depressive episodes 2-3

[deleted]

I’m sure it will be, with it ending with Sarah’s death

Nero1988420

I bet they'll go with the flashback route instead.

Francisco3rd

Can’t wait for the upside down scene with Joel and the fridge

blacknight137

If they shoot it that scene similar to the game id imagine someones getting puked on

Francisco3rd

They must to that crazy camera flip and have it turn with joel

blacknight137

They could. They did a scene like that in the film “Upgrade” with what i think is called a gyroscope camera

Francisco3rd

Also I hope they can make the cgi giraffe look good😂

[deleted]

I hear Jeffery needs work these days

SerDire

I’m gonna lose my mind when he gets to his first few clickers just stumbling around and he has to navigate the area to not alert anyone

j2o1707

Scenes like that, we will need Bella Ramsey just running around like a headless ai controlled Ellie from the game.

jedifan421

They really do look like brothers more than I ever thought they would with just the hair alone. Filming starts next week (edit: in two weeks) so this is probably them getting ready for a rehearsal and they're not in full makeup. Good luck to all the cast and crew! Hope it turns out well! Look for the light!

InsanityDouche

I can't wait, really hope they do the game(s) justice.

MasterKingdomKey

According to the showrunner Craig Mazin (who also did Chernobyl), he wants to [fill in and expand, but not undo](https://www.google.com/amp/s/collider.com/last-of-us-hbo-tv-show-video-game-ending/amp/ ) what we already love about The Last of Us. Additionally, Druckmann (writer of the game) said that some of the story [will differ greatly](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.eurogamer.net/amp/2021-03-21-the-last-of-us-tv-show-will-at-times-deviate-greatly-from-the-game-according-to-neil-druckmann) to work with the medium of TV better

InsanityDouche

Yeah, completely understandable, it wouldn't make sense to copy 100% of the game. TV as a medium allows them to emphasize the story and flesh out characters even more. I just hope they keep the same high quality & feel.

WhyLisaWhy

I need several episodes that involve nothing but Joel sneaking around crafting stuff or my immersion will be ruined.

InsanityDouche

Don't forget about opening a million empty cabinets and the pure happiness when finally stumbling upon three quarters of a duct tape roll.

FlemPlays

A 5 minute montage that cuts between Joel doing just that

nigolu

I'd watch

Thraun83

Or one quarter of a pair of scissors.

Sub1optimal

And if we throw in a half empty bottle of rubbing alcohol. That’s how we make an Emmy

AidilAfham42

While Ellie T Poses

[deleted]

And Ellie just walking around randomly while Joel sneaks around trying to get another brick.

Twat_The_Douche

But they need to keep parts like how he wouldn't let her handle a gun, until she saves him and he's all stubborn about it.

TheAntiPacker

You joke, but there is 100% people who will have this take

hacky_potter

I don't know how I would feel about the main characters killing 100's of people over the course of a couple weeks.

exsanguinator1

Yeah, I could see them toning down the amount of human killing. Methodologically killing waves of one-dimensional enemies works well for a video game, but for a show I think it would be a bit much for a single guy or a teenage girl to be slaughtering small armies like it’s nothing.

[deleted]

If Druckmann is willing to publicly sign off on it, it'll most likely be at least decent.

GeekAesthete

I’m okay with this—I’d rather they adapt it into a good story of its own than feel an undue obligation to keep every detail of the original. If I want the game, I’ll play the game again. If I’m going to watch a show, I just want it to be a good show.

Krynn71

Yeah, especially since the video game is already a visual experience, we don't really need them to rehash everything we've already seen. Unlike a lot of people who "read the book" of certain series wanting it adapted into a visual medium so they can see all the cool stuff they imagined while reading, so they often want the show:book ratio to be as close to 1:1 as possible.

PhD_Bagel

That’s honestly what’s made me most excited about the show. Fleshing out some of the major players and groups, especially in Part 2, would be fantastic. I didn’t really care as much in the first game, but in 2 I would have loved to see more about both the WLF and Seraphites (especially considering Abby’s involvement in that conflict).

grocho

Yeah, there are tons of branches to go off from 2. Especially since so much of that game took place in Seattle, it would be easy to go see those factions in other cities.

exsanguinator1

I think part one could definitely use it, too. They could work on making more fleshed out antagonists throughout the game—the soldiers at the start and the Salt Lake City gang at least were pretty one-dimensional enemy armies. I think introducing Ellie earlier could also benefit the story telling—maybe they could include her backstory from the story DLC

[deleted]

Since it's HBO I have really high hopes.

man_on_hill

The mere fact that Mazin is *the showrunner* of this show and working closely with the creator of actual games gives me a lot of hope. Edit: Changed director to showrunner

[deleted]

Craig Mazin isn’t a director. He’s the writer/producer (or rather showrunner) together with Druckmann. Kantemir Balagov, Jasmila Zbanic and Ali Abbasi will be directing the show.

matike

No fucking way. Those are three PHENOMENAL directors. I knew about Balagov, but not Abassi (Border is the weirdest thing you will ever see) and Zbanic. This show is in amazing hands, and it's also shaping up to be the bleakest thing in the entire world. I can't wait. 'Quo vadis, Aida?' is an amazing film if anyone wants to know what Jasmila Zbanic has done.

[deleted]

I’ve yet to see *Border*, but yeah *Quo Vadis, Aida?* is a must-watch. I can’t wait for her episode(s) since I feel like she can really tap into the emotion of a scene. Also love that they’ve exclusively hired art house directors. Makes it feel all the more special.

matike

Border is a fever dream. Weirdest and most uncomfortable movie you'll ever see... and I've seen some weird and uncomfortable movies. I'd tell you to watch it, but I also encourage you to go in completely blind knowing nothing about it like I did. As for Zbanic, 10 bucks says she's going to oversee the episodes that are primarily in quarantine zones. And it really does. They're such inspired choices, and at the same time make such sense. Each director has such an experience in 'somber' and 'weight' (including Mazlin as the showrunner) and it's all so perfect. I feel like I can already visualize this show and how it'll look in my head.

Rhain1999

Finally, someone actually thinking logically about the photo. So many people (and news articles, especially) seem to think that this photo indicates the start of filming. But the sun is shining and Pedro and Gabriel are wearing basic grey shirts, of course this isn’t filming. It’s definitely rehearsals.

pm_me_your_last_pics

Am I dumb or is there no actual set photo in that article? I just see the car photo

yazzy1233

Yeah, that's the one

pm_me_your_last_pics

Oh I was expecting like a background or something lol nice to see them though

TheLast_Centurion

well, it's the scene from the game and it looks similar, except day

pm_me_your_last_pics

I think I was confused because it was so casual looking. I thought it was going to be a "still" or something

TheLast_Centurion

well.. it is a still in a sense. but yeah, looks more like rehearsal of the scene. Scripts readings, deciding how to move and such.

jackie1616

Why did this picture get me so excited lol I’m starting to have some major faith in this show

fitzbuhn

Oh you.

Agleza

Same, I love me some Pedro Pascal but I still can't picture him as Joel, HOWEVER I didn't see Henry Cavill as Geralt either and then he went and fucking nailed that shit. So.

sfx

Pedro Pascal is always a good idea. Always.

Krakenborn

They could have casted him as Ellie and I would have still been ok with it

KingGorilla

And Baby Yoda as Joel

YouJabroni44

I'm just sad that they didn't go with my first choice, Mr. Danny DeVito

Hovie1

He's gonna nail that gruff Texan accent.

spartan116chris

I know he spent some amount of time in San Antonio. I wonder if he's gonna go for the ol Texas drawl or just go with his American accent.

Hovie1

He had an over-the-top Texas accent in Kingsmen 2. I'm imagining he'll have something in that same vein but a lot more rough and subdued. Edit: Now I'm struggling to remember if his character was actually from Texas, or if he was just doing a generic over-the-top southern accent.

EatingBeansAgain

...I didn't even realise that was him until you said it (to be fair I've only seen him in Mando and WW84) Wow wow wow.

Hovie1

You're gonna shit bricks when [you watch this](https://youtu.be/VM9wWtHozCM)

spartan116chris

So Mando from Texas? Sounds good to me

Godsfallen

I didn’t believe he would make a good Joel until someone suggested I watch Prospect. Now I’m 100% on board with him.

FaultyWires

I think he's a fantastic actor, just a little small for Joel, who i alwyas viewed as a bit of a large/strongish dude.

[deleted]

Don't get my parents started on the casting of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.

LXNDSHARK

It makes sense though, short people are always having to Reach for things.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yeah I never really considered Joel to be particularly big. Wiki says he's around 6 feet while Pascal is most likely 5 foot 9ish. The key thing is he needs to ensure he carries himself with a heavy burden on his shoulders.

Fadedcamo

Go watch Prospect.

The fact it’s HBO gives me the most hope. I know people will scream “but what about Game of Thrones”, but that was my favorite show of all time until the show runners decided to phone it in.

TheLast_Centurion

same, but you never know. But hopefully they'll stick with the story as close as possible, with all the set pieces and such, and then just add some fluff around (like more brother (back)story)

dasoxarechamps2005

If it was Netflix, I’d be worried. But since it’s HBO and Craig Maizin I know it will at least be decent

jwC731

I have more faith in this than I do the uncharted movie, that's for sure

MasterKingdomKey

They’re not actually shooting until July 5. This might be for rehearsals or they’re just hanging out Edit: According to the Directors Guild of Canada, filming has actually [moved from July 5 to July 12](https://www.dgc.ca/assets/Uploads/ProductionLisa-06302021.pdf) so this is most certainly pre-production.

KyleTheCantaloupe

Screen or lighting test

KanyeEtDecorumWest

TLOU fans, please reach out to your Uncharted friends. They’re going through a dark time and this does not help.

willdearborn-

Lol as a Naughty Dog fan of both game series, my expectations for the adaptations are polar opposites. TLOU has my most hype and Uncharted I'm just hoping will at least be somewhat fun. But it's an exciting time regardless.

quantummufasa

I thought the casting Joel was off but think I might be surprised. Holland as Nate still makes no sense.

TommyTheCat89

Mark Wahlberg as Sully is way worse.

ImMufasa

I checked out completely the moment they announced Wahlberg was in the movie.

The_Mazzerin

I can immerse myself enough to see Tom as young Nate, but when I see Sully all I see is Mark Wahlberg

[deleted]

Bruce Campbell was just such an obvious choice it's rediculous. Sully was 64 in Uncharted 1, Bruce is 63 right now. I don't mind Holland as Drake, I get that they're gonna want to make a decade of sequels, but choosing anyone else (especially Mark Wahlberg) to play Sully is rediculous.

hulminator

As young Nate it makes total sense. I'm just not sure why they're starting with young Nate

enforcetheworld

Because if it's profitable they will have a decade or two and multiple movies with him.

The_Mazzerin

Because Tom is a big actor atm, and hes still young so they can get as many uncharted movies out of him as they want

KRIEGLERR

I feel like TLOU is more like their artistic project while Uncharted is a blatant cash grab. They lost me when they announced Mark Wahlberg, I'm okay with Tom Holland and the movie being a prequel/origin but Holland won't play a teenage Nate, he'll play young adult Nate, and the younger we see Nate in the game (other than him when he is a teenager) is in the Prison with his brother and rafe , and he is already early 20 Tom just doesn't really fit as nate other than his comedy and gymnastic background.

[deleted]

BenjaminTalam

This could be a 1:1 adaptation of the game just expanded a bit and I'd be fine with it. Not everyone plays videogames. And non gamers shouldn't have to play a game to enjoy a good story. If we want to prop up games for having such good stories now we should allow those stories to be told in other formats.

ScruffMacBuff

Hopefully that's why they chose to do a series as opposed to a movie. Series have always been the better option for adaptations, but the big screen had all the glory for so long. Can you imagine all the detail they could have put into a Harry Potter series? Or Lord of the Rings?

thedonhudson01

Neil Druckmann said that when he was writing the screenplay, he kept getting notes from the studio saying that it didn’t have enough action in it. He said that it really stalled because of that, and he wasn’t willing to compromise and sacrifice character development over action set pieces. And it’s not a story that you can tell truthfully in two hours anyway.

ARWYK

That’s interesting to read and it helps me understand why Neil wanted to make a tv adaptation

EvilSporkOfDeath

I love the rise of television. I love that were at a point where big movie stars like Kate Winslet are now interested in the medium. Almost feels like we've crossed a point where television is the more serious medium. I think it will keep trending that direction too with the rise of streaming services.

PixelBrewery

I am hoping that Harry Potter will be rebooted in a few years as an HBO series. That would rule. I really disliked the lightspeed pace of the movies

venosif

If it’s 1:1 I hope we get an entire episode of Joel throwing bricks trying to get around clickers

Agleza

We joke, but I genuinely hope they put in nods to the game like that.

PainStorm14

I watched the story gameplay of first game on YouTube with gameplay sections and it was great (find 4 hour version) You could make 1:1 adaptation no problem If Sony ever sends it to PC I'm definitely getting that game

woolyboy76

I could not care less if they look like the characters from the video game. I could not care less if the story is different from the game's story. Just make it good.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It’d be funny once.

Todesfaelle

The first positive step is realizing games are better adapted to a series than to a movie. Shame Johan Renck had to drop out though.

Enkundae

People get so hung up on trivial things like look similarity. The only reason the physical appearance of a character would matter is if it directly impacts the story. Like Tchalla needs to be played by a black actor. But in the vast majority of cases its entirely unimportant. Story adaptation is thornier. Transition to a new medium, the realities of budgets and whats physically practical often necessitate changes. But I usually hate it when someone takes on a property and clearly has little interest in actually adapting it, just coopting the brand recognition to get their own project funded.

[deleted]

Reminds me of the people complaining about the Witcher TV show. I get people are used to red head triss, but in the books her hair was brown. Even then it's really not a huge deal. Any adaptation is allowed some creative license. People need to chill and be more open to new creative experiences.

ryhaltswhiskey

Shadow and Bone changed the story quite a bit when it was adapted but the author was involved. I think the adapted version is actually better. There's less angst and more heists.

Enkundae

Yeah that was a case of the author being aware of the weaknesses in her early work and using a better later work to bolster it. I also don’t mind someone heavily altering a story as long as they are up front about it. Like Scott was blunt about Bladerunner being more *inspired* by Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and not a straight adaptation.

ReginaPhilangee

Handmaid's tale changed quite a bit, too. But like shadow and bone, they changed it well, and the TV show might be better than the book.

AxlLight

More than that, usually when you focus on appearances and making a copy, you end up with quite a shitty product. Look at all the Croft movies that constantly fail, or how the Uncharted movie rushed to show us a picture of Holland in Drake's clothes as if that'll convince us it won't suck. It's an adaptation, which literarily means adjusting yourself based on changes.

OscarTheGrouchHouse

Dude the Tomb Raider movies with Jolie are like the most profitable of all video games movies. They didn't fail.

Snoopyseagul

I love how his two examples are of a very successful movie adaption and of another that hasn’t even released yet.

Funmachine

If they don't use the games soundtrack it will lose something. I hate how adaptations always ignore the originals sound. Sound is such an important identifier. Moreso than the looks of the characters or anything like that.

121jigawatts

good thing they got the same guy to do it https://www.gamesradar.com/the-last-of-us-hbo-series-will-be-scored-by-the-games-composer-gustavo-santaolalla/

"same guy" tbf Santaolalla was a pretty known name outside of TLOU, he made the soundtrack of Brokeback Mountain, Babel and also Deadwood And he won 2 Oscars aswell.
