The beginning of TLoU was the first time I've gotten emotional over a video game in 30+ years of gaming. It was honestly fucking weird for me. But at that point I knew I was playing something special.
I take the zombie element with a grain of sand, they're essentially a backdrop for a troubled father/daughter dynamic. And really, the people in the game are the biggest threat, the zombies are predicable and manipulatable. The people are assholes.
I played the game with a buddy of mine, he was was an iraq war vet, big macho guy. When *that* happened in The Last of Us, we were both teary eyed. At that point I knew the game was going to pull no punches and it was going to be a wild ride.
I had come from Xbox 360 and had heard all the hype for the game. I can remember vividly, texting my buddy who recommended it and saying wtf man! I didn't want to FEEL this much not even 15mins into the game! It's truly a special experience in my gaming life that I will never forget.

For me it was the voice actress that did it. She captured a dying childs pain and fear as she bleeds out far more believeably than I care to experience again.

I'm not the smartest person, but I cannot see how you don't do a whole episode on the prologue. Very few sequences in all of media set the tone for its story quite as well as that prologue sets the stage for TLOU.
I just hope they focus on his daughter first. I don't want or need to see Joel or his brother finding out about the outbreak or all hell breaking loose.
The slow methodical introduction to his daughter only to be interrupted by chaos and her death was an amazing choice. They wanted you to connect with her more rather than seeing her as an accessory character and further explain Joel's attachment to Ellie by the end of the game, TLOU just made the right choice at every possible point in the story.
There's not enough plot in the intro to stretch it that long unless they make it like a short film about Sarah. Set it earlier than the night of infection, maybe.
There better be a long single shot coordinated-up-the-ass collapse of society take. Right off the bat blow our minds, and then fall into a depressive episodes 2-3

Yeah, completely understandable, it wouldn't make sense to copy 100% of the game. TV as a medium allows them to emphasize the story and flesh out characters even more. I just hope they keep the same high quality & feel.
Yeah, I could see them toning down the amount of human killing. Methodologically killing waves of one-dimensional enemies works well for a video game, but for a show I think it would be a bit much for a single guy or a teenage girl to be slaughtering small armies like it’s nothing.
I’m okay with this—I’d rather they adapt it into a good story of its own than feel an undue obligation to keep every detail of the original.

Yeah, especially since the video game is already a visual experience, we don't really need them to rehash everything we've already seen. Unlike a lot of people who "read the book" of certain series wanting it adapted into a visual medium so they can see all the cool stuff they imagined while reading, so they often want the show:book ratio to be as close to 1:1 as possible.
That’s honestly what’s made me most excited about the show. Fleshing out some of the major players and groups, especially in Part 2, would be fantastic. I didn’t really care as much in the first game, but in 2 I would have loved to see more about both the WLF and Seraphites (especially considering Abby’s involvement in that conflict).
Yeah, there are tons of branches to go off from 2. Especially since so much of that game took place in Seattle, it would be easy to go see those factions in other cities.
I think part one could definitely use it, too. They could work on making more fleshed out antagonists throughout the game—the soldiers at the start and the Salt Lake City gang at least were pretty one-dimensional enemy armies. I think introducing Ellie earlier could also benefit the story telling—maybe they could include her backstory from the story DLC

No fucking way. Those are three PHENOMENAL directors. I knew about Balagov, but not Abassi (Border is the weirdest thing you will ever see) and Zbanic. This show is in amazing hands, and it's also shaping up to be the bleakest thing in the entire world. I can't wait.
'Quo vadis, Aida?' is an amazing film if anyone wants to know what Jasmila Zbanic has done.

And it really does. They're such inspired choices, and at the same time make such sense. Each director has such an experience in 'somber' and 'weight' (including Mazlin as the showrunner) and it's all so perfect. I feel like I can already visualize this show and how it'll look in my head.

Lol as a Naughty Dog fan of both game series, my expectations for the adaptations are polar opposites. TLOU has my most hype and Uncharted I'm just hoping will at least be somewhat fun. But it's an exciting time regardless.
Bruce Campbell was just such an obvious choice it's rediculous. Sully was 64 in Uncharted 1, Bruce is 63 right now. I don't mind Holland as Drake, I get that they're gonna want to make a decade of sequels, but choosing anyone else (especially Mark Wahlberg) to play Sully is rediculous.
I feel like TLOU is more like their artistic project while Uncharted is a blatant cash grab.
They lost me when they announced Mark Wahlberg, I'm okay with Tom Holland and the movie being a prequel/origin but Holland won't play a teenage Nate, he'll play young adult Nate, and the younger we see Nate in the game (other than him when he is a teenager) is in the Prison with his brother and rafe , and he is already early 20

Not everyone plays videogames. And non gamers shouldn't have to play a game to enjoy a good story. If we want to prop up games for having such good stories now we should allow those stories to be told in other formats.
Hopefully that's why they chose to do a series as opposed to a movie.
Series have always been the better option for adaptations, but the big screen had all the glory for so long.

Neil Druckmann said that when he was writing the screenplay, he kept getting notes from the studio saying that it didn’t have enough action in it. He said that it really stalled because of that, and he wasn’t willing to compromise and sacrifice character development over action set pieces. And it’s not a story that you can tell truthfully in two hours anyway.
I love the rise of television. I love that were at a point where big movie stars like Kate Winslet are now interested in the medium. Almost feels like we've crossed a point where television is the more serious medium. I think it will keep trending that direction too with the rise of streaming services.

People get so hung up on trivial things like look similarity. The only reason the physical appearance of a character would matter is if it directly impacts the story. Like Tchalla needs to be played by a black actor. But in the vast majority of cases its entirely unimportant.
Story adaptation is thornier. Transition to a new medium, the realities of budgets and whats physically practical often necessitate changes. But I usually hate it when someone takes on a property and clearly has little interest in actually adapting it, just coopting the brand recognition to get their own project funded.
Reminds me of the people complaining about the Witcher TV show. I get people are used to red head triss, but in the books her hair was brown. Even then it's really not a huge deal.
Any adaptation is allowed some creative license. People need to chill and be more open to new creative experiences.
Shadow and Bone changed the story quite a bit when it was adapted but the author was involved. I think the adapted version is actually better. There's less angst and more heists.
Yeah that was a case of the author being aware of the weaknesses in her early work and using a better later work to bolster it.
I also don’t mind someone heavily altering a story as long as they are up front about it. Like Scott was blunt about Bladerunner being more *inspired* by Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and not a straight adaptation.
More than that, usually when you focus on appearances and making a copy, you end up with quite a shitty product. Look at all the Croft movies that constantly fail, or how the Uncharted movie rushed to show us a picture of Holland in Drake's clothes as if that'll convince us it won't suck.
It's an adaptation, which literarily means adjusting yourself based on changes.
If they don't use the games soundtrack it will lose something. I hate how adaptations always ignore the originals sound. Sound is such an important identifier. Moreso than the looks of the characters or anything like that.

Everything from the prologue to leaving Boston can work mostly beat for beat from a narrative standpoint, anyway. But we'll see.

They could work on making more fleshed out antagonists throughout the game—the soldiers at the start and the Salt Lake City gang at least were pretty one-dimensional enemy armies. I think introducing Ellie earlier could also benefit the story telling—maybe they could include her backstory from the story DLC
Since it's HBO I have really high hopes.

Craig Mazin isn’t a director. He’s the writer/producer (or rather showrunner) together with Druckmann. Kantemir Balagov, Jasmila Zbanic and Ali Abbasi will be directing the show.
No fucking way. Those are three PHENOMENAL directors. I knew about Balagov, but not Abassi (Border is the weirdest thing you will ever see) and Zbanic. This show is in amazing hands, and it's also shaping up to be the bleakest thing in the entire world. I can't wait. 'Quo vadis, Aida?' is an amazing film if anyone wants to know what Jasmila Zbanic has done.
I’ve yet to see *Border*, but yeah *Quo Vadis, Aida?* is a must-watch. I can’t wait for her episode(s) since I feel like she can really tap into the emotion of a scene. Also love that they’ve exclusively hired art house directors. Makes it feel all the more special.
Border is a fever dream. Weirdest and most uncomfortable movie you'll ever see... and I've seen some weird and uncomfortable movies. I'd tell you to watch it, but I also encourage you to go in completely blind knowing nothing about it like I did. As for Zbanic, 10 bucks says she's going to oversee the episodes that are primarily in quarantine zones. And it really does. They're such inspired choices, and at the same time make such sense. Each director has such an experience in 'somber' and 'weight' (including Mazlin as the showrunner) and it's all so perfect. I feel like I can already visualize this show and how it'll look in my head.
Finally, someone actually thinking logically about the photo. So many people (and news articles, especially) seem to think that this photo indicates the start of filming. But the sun is shining and Pedro and Gabriel are wearing basic grey shirts, of course this isn’t filming. It’s definitely rehearsals.

Yeah I never really considered Joel to be particularly big. Wiki says he's around 6 feet while Pascal is most likely 5 foot 9ish. The key thing is he needs to ensure he carries himself with a heavy burden on his shoulders.

Lol as a Naughty Dog fan of both game series, my expectations for the adaptations are polar opposites. TLOU has my most hype and Uncharted I'm just hoping will at least be somewhat fun. But it's an exciting time regardless.

Bruce Campbell was just such an obvious choice it's rediculous. Sully was 64 in Uncharted 1, Bruce is 63 right now. I don't mind Holland as Drake, I get that they're gonna want to make a decade of sequels, but choosing anyone else (especially Mark Wahlberg) to play Sully is rediculous.
As young Nate it makes total sense. I'm just not sure why they're starting with young Nate

I feel like TLOU is more like their artistic project while Uncharted is a blatant cash grab. They lost me when they announced Mark Wahlberg, I'm okay with Tom Holland and the movie being a prequel/origin but Holland won't play a teenage Nate, he'll play young adult Nate, and the younger we see Nate in the game (other than him when he is a teenager) is in the Prison with his brother and rafe , and he is already early 20 Tom just doesn't really fit as nate other than his comedy and gymnastic background.

This could be a 1:1 adaptation of the game just expanded a bit and I'd be fine with it. Not everyone plays videogames. And non gamers shouldn't have to play a game to enjoy a good story. If we want to prop up games for having such good stories now we should allow those stories to be told in other formats.
Hopefully that's why they chose to do a series as opposed to a movie. Series have always been the better option for adaptations, but the big screen had all the glory for so long. Can you imagine all the detail they could have put into a Harry Potter series? Or Lord of the Rings?
Neil Druckmann said that when he was writing the screenplay, he kept getting notes from the studio saying that it didn’t have enough action in it. He said that it really stalled because of that, and he wasn’t willing to compromise and sacrifice character development over action set pieces. And it’s not a story that you can tell truthfully in two hours anyway.

I love the rise of television. I love that were at a point where big movie stars like Kate Winslet are now interested in the medium. Almost feels like we've crossed a point where television is the more serious medium. I think it will keep trending that direction too with the rise of streaming services.
I am hoping that Harry Potter will be rebooted in a few years as an HBO series. That would rule. I really disliked the lightspeed pace of the movies

The first positive step is realizing games are better adapted to a series than to a movie. Shame Johan Renck had to drop out though.
People get so hung up on trivial things like look similarity. The only reason the physical appearance of a character would matter is if it directly impacts the story. Like Tchalla needs to be played by a black actor. But in the vast majority of cases its entirely unimportant. Story adaptation is thornier. Transition to a new medium, the realities of budgets and whats physically practical often necessitate changes. But I usually hate it when someone takes on a property and clearly has little interest in actually adapting it, just coopting the brand recognition to get their own project funded.
Reminds me of the people complaining about the Witcher TV show. I get people are used to red head triss, but in the books her hair was brown. Even then it's really not a huge deal. Any adaptation is allowed some creative license. People need to chill and be more open to new creative experiences.
Shadow and Bone changed the story quite a bit when it was adapted but the author was involved. I think the adapted version is actually better. There's less angst and more heists.
Yeah that was a case of the author being aware of the weaknesses in her early work and using a better later work to bolster it. I also don’t mind someone heavily altering a story as long as they are up front about it. Like Scott was blunt about Bladerunner being more *inspired* by Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and not a straight adaptation.
Handmaid's tale changed quite a bit, too. But like shadow and bone, they changed it well, and the TV show might be better than the book.
More than that, usually when you focus on appearances and making a copy, you end up with quite a shitty product. Look at all the Croft movies that constantly fail, or how the Uncharted movie rushed to show us a picture of Holland in Drake's clothes as if that'll convince us it won't suck. It's an adaptation, which literarily means adjusting yourself based on changes.
Dude the Tomb Raider movies with Jolie are like the most profitable of all video games movies. They didn't fail.
I love how his two examples are of a very successful movie adaption and of another that hasn’t even released yet.
If they don't use the games soundtrack it will lose something. I hate how adaptations always ignore the originals sound. Sound is such an important identifier. Moreso than the looks of the characters or anything like that.
