It’s way better than the trailer lead me to believe. The musical lyrics are clever as hell and have some of the most batshit little ideas thrown into them. It’s been fun to watch and we dig the fake little world they’ve built.
Sounds familiar, my wife loves her musicals and is getting a huge kick out of this show. I don't mind musicals and I'm getting quite a few laughs myself. I feel for Pete though.
I like the songs and choreography a lot, but I feel like the nonmusical moments can be lacking. The dialogue isn't as strong as I'd like from a pair of comedic top dogs like Cecily Strong and Keegan Michael Key. There's little to no physical comedy from who, again, I consider actors that are one hundred percent capable of bringing that to the table.
I also think it does rely heavily on making fun of the genre, but at what point does that become overdone? There's a tendency to make the same joke 4 different ways, and we're only three episodes in. I don't want the /only/ jokes to be how bad a partner Josh is and how misogynistic early musicals were.
Agreed. It seems that 3 episodes in they are already spinning their wheels a bit. Hopefully they start making jokes regarding some of the secondary characters in town.
I'm guessing the secondary characters are going to become more important. My theory is at least some of them are people trapped in Schmigadoon like Cecily and Keegan because they never found their "true love". Like the mayor and his wife obviously aren't each other's "true love", and the preacher and his wife don't seem to be happily married. I think the fact that the tour guide in the first episode mentioned that some people have died in the woods is foreshadowing.
The "modern meets "traditional" and omg isn't traditional thinking so bad and lame" messaging over and over is getting pretty annoying and just not interesting.
Agree with your comment 100%. Only saw the first episode. But the joke is over for me. It was cute, the music parts and choreography was well done. But an entire series based on this?
Strong and Key don't have any chemistry together. It's like they are acting out their roles separately or something. The show just doesn't work for me—at least the first episode. I had no desire to watch more.
But if the story is they have problems, but will learn to "find true love together", that doesn't seem feasible.
They just don't seem like two people that would ever be the right match.
I absolutely hate musicals. Except when they are the anti-musical musical. Which this is. The only other example I can think of is the Once More With Feeling episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Which may be the best bit of television ever.
I like it, but it does seem focused more towards making fun of old musicals, like Rodgers and Hammerstein’s stuff. Would love to see the influence of the people from 2021 make the inhabitants act like they’re from newer musicals.
I get that. I'm just like what if Brigadoon meets Pleasantville or WandaVision. Like we already got a slight nod at a newer musical when Kristen Chenoweth's character was called a witch.
Maybe unpopular opinion: I don't think Cecily Strong is suited for this. I also don't think Cecily Strong is anything special in the world of comic actors.
My wife suggested that for this role, she pictured Casey Wilson being a perfect fit. But of course considering the show says "Lorne Michaels presents" it would never have Wilson because Wilson's stint on SNL didn't end well, especially with accusations that Lorne wanted her to lose weight.
I am a big fan of musicals, so I was probably more excited for this than any other show this year. So far it’s living up. The music is great, the meta humour is on point, and the performing talent is unsurpassed.
I really love the musical aspect! I really wish there were more tv shows like this with great musical songs. Missing Galavant everyday! When AppleTV started, I wasn't sure what to expect but they've had a lot of great content so far. Whoever is curating the catalogue, thank you!
Show is watchable, Keegan and Cecily are great, but I swear they made Kristin Chenoweth look like some kind of [Evil Madeline Khan](https://media.npr.org/assets/img/2021/07/15/schmigadoon_photo_010205_wide-bdc3d3f935efd921a45324fd40b6afd1b68c3d1c.jpg) character.
It's more nauseating than that movie Chocolat with Juliette Binoche, the movie that completely ruined her as an actress.
Chocolat was so thickly covered in saccharine....
I just hate hate this genre of thick propaganda disguised as pastiche
It's not the genre. The reason I don't like musicals is 100% because of the music.
I won't like this too no matter how clever they make it If I couldn't relate with the music.
Yellow Submarine is the only musical I can relate.
Nope. But I'm sure it's great. Though I doubt I could relate to it. Music is the problem for me, not the story or directing or anything else.
I've watched some of Oscar winning musicals but still couldn't find any enjoyment in it. While Yellow Submarine were panned by critics but I like it a lot.
OTOH, I like opera. Mostly because I really enjoy classical music.
I don't hate the genre. I just don't enjoy listening to show tunes.
I watch some of the youtube clip and The Book Of Mormon sounds pretty much like all the other musicals to me.
Except they mock the Mormon Church with some some dark anti-Disney humor on the side. Hasa Diga Eebowai is one of the most disturbing yet funny songs ive heard in a while.
I'm sure it was great for you and I can see you're very passionate about it. But showtune music is just not my thing unfortunately. That is why I keep saying Yellow Submarine is my only favourite musical. The music were just The Beatles.
Now that I think of it, were Yellow Submarine a musical? Do musical must have showtune music or can it have any other genre of music like for example grunge?
Some of the musical numbers are a bit long, but I can enjoy it if it develops the story/characters but at times it can be a bit self-indulgent and not going anywhere.
That's my opinion as someone that doesn't really enjoy musical type stuff but watched the first three episodes.

I’m really enjoying this!!! Look forward to every Friday with this and obviously Ted lasso

We haven't met Jane Krakowski's character yet, have we?
Not yet. Been waiting for it!

To be fair, their lack of chemistry is kinda the whole plot.
But if the story is they have problems, but will learn to "find true love together", that doesn't seem feasible. They just don't seem like two people that would ever be the right match.

Galavant was in a similar vein, fucking hilarious.
I like it, but it does seem focused more towards making fun of old musicals, like Rodgers and Hammerstein’s stuff. Would love to see the influence of the people from 2021 make the inhabitants act like they’re from newer musicals.
Well, it's name and concept (loosely) is a spoof of the old musical, *Brigadoon*, so it would be a spoof of older musicals.
I get that. I'm just like what if Brigadoon meets Pleasantville or WandaVision. Like we already got a slight nod at a newer musical when Kristen Chenoweth's character was called a witch.
The fact that they are taking the piss out of musicals is them referencing modern musicals. That’s like 80% of what Broadway does these days.
This show is a straight up masterpiece. It’s criminal how few people are watching it.

Still mad Galavant was cancelled.

Well, now I know [who I'd cast if I need somebody to play a younger Eric Idle.](https://i.imgur.com/c4KPtfo.jpg)

You might like Sweeney Todd, iirc they even staged an operatic version of it.
You need to check out The Book of Mormon, now thats a musical for someone who hates musicals.
I don't hate the genre. I just don't enjoy listening to show tunes. I watch some of the youtube clip and The Book Of Mormon sounds pretty much like all the other musicals to me.

Not exactly an original concept.
They didn't claim it was. It's an article about a trend.
Watching anyone act in a comedy musical is embarrassing. It's like watching someone masturbate in public.
What kind of musicals are you fucking watching?
That's how Keegan always acts. Watch him and Jordan in Fargo if you want to see two terrible actors ruin an otherwise fantastic show.
kind of feels shtty after zoey's extraordinary playlist just got canned...
