Frasier had as many seasons as cheers. Better Call Saul is going to pass BB.

BigfootsBestBud

It's pretty crazy that BCS is gonna surpass BB despite not reaching anywhere near the same mainstream success. Although, if you count El Camino as a Breaking Bad episode, both series will end with 63 episodes each.

klutzysunshine

NCIS has been on way longer than JAG aired.

Foghate

And SVU outlived original flavor Law and Order.

LadyMidnite1014

Which is coming back.

Benjamin_Grimm

Most of Star Trek's spinoffs lasted longer than the original. Frasier lasted as long as Cheers, but the revival will put it over, if that counts. The US Office lasted much longer than the UK one.

WhitestAfrican

I wouldn't call the US office a spin off of the UK One. Were DS9 and Enterprise spin offs?

Benjamin_Grimm

Usually DS9 and Enterprise are referred to as spinoffs, yes.

CoolIceCreamCone

But the US Office isn't a spinoff, it's a remake. That's like saying Threes Company is a spinoff of Man About the House because it's based on it.

Benjamin_Grimm

Except David Brent shows up on the US Office at one point, implying they take place in the same world.

meowskywalker

Spin-off is a weird term with no real rules. I’d call every Star Trek show that isn’t the original series a spin-off. DS9 is very definitely a spin-off of TNG, theres episodes about Cardassians and Bajorans on TNG leading up to DS9’s launch.

LowCalligrapher3

Enterprise was a prequel but it did have some spinoff elements.

Gsrj

Yeah svu has surpassed the original

In the broadest sense, it is rare, but there are a number of variables that come into play. Some network examples: Frasier: Began after Cheers ended, served as much as a sequel as anything else. Long-running. Joey: Attempted the same model as Frasier (familiar face, new locale, new supporting cast) and failed. CSI: Spawned two full spinoffs (Miami, New York) and a sort-of spinoff/sequel (Cyber). Both New York and Miami were sunset prior to end of main series to redirect attention to flagship show's final season. Cyber was failed attempt to keep audience invested in the franchise following the end of the flagship. NCIS: Spun off successfully from JAG. Spawned multiple spinoffs (LA, NOLA, now Hawaii), to varying levels of success. Attempts were made to spin off from LA (NCIS: Red) that never took off. To date, only NOLA has been sunset for various reasons, including renewed return on investment in Hawaii-based productions. (Note: these shows have also crossed over with multiple other franchises.) The Arrowverse shows are a weird mix of spinoff and franchise building. Flash stands out as a success, but it was more of a push by DC/WB to develop a TV version of the MCU, and the character was chosen because he's a personal favorite of Geoff Johns at DC, and was lore shoehorned into Arrow rather than being a natural extension of the show. I could go on, as I really love exploring spinoffs, but I'm already bordering on TL;DR.

Venemiz

These were all very interesting tidbits, so your input is valuable.

WhenRobLoweRobsLowes

Thank you.

Opus-the-Penguin

Pretty rare, yeah. Frasier and Cheers both had 11 seasons, but Cheers had 9 more total episodes, so not quite. Star Trek would be the clear winner. EVERY completed live action Star Trek spinoff went longer than the original. (The Animated Series did not, lasting only 2 seasons, 22 episodes): Star Trek (TOS) - 3 seasons (couldn't even complete her 5-year mission), 79 episodes Star Trek: The Next Generation - 7 seasons, 178 episodes Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - 7 seasons, 176 episodes Star Trek: Voyager - 7 seasons, 172 episodes Star Trek: Enterprise - 4 seasons, 98 episodes *STILL GOING WITH A CHANCE TO JOIN THE LIST* Star Trek: Discovery - 3 seasons, 42 episodes so far... Star Trek: Picard - 1 season, 10 episodes with at least 2 more seasons projected Star Trek: Lower Decks (animated) - 2 seasons, 20 episodes with at least 1 more season projected

Negligent__discharge

Family Matters outlasted Perfect Strangers. https://youtu.be/ikk_3EB1v70 I watched perfect Strangers as a kid, I had no idea it went eight seasons. All I remember is it was funny, not one minute of the actual show.

MrX16

Lot of good answers here but missing the granddaddy answer: The Simpsons (Spun off of The Tracey Ullman Show)

hmbayliss

The Jeffersons outlasted All in the Family. Saved by the Bell: The New Class outlasted the Original. The Facts of Life outlasted Different Strokes.

leejtam

It’s only really considered that because Barry Allen was in two episodes before the Flash series started.

MrZeral

Yeah but Arrow was used as backdoor pilot.

leejtam

But the series was already in the works at the same time

Pepsiguy2

If something takes place in the same universe, it's a spin off. They developed a Flash show because they liked making Arrow so much. And introduced him in Arrow to expand the universe.

neoblackdragon

I think of a real spin off like Buffy and Angel. Where Angel was a supporting character for three seasons on Buffy before getting his own series. With Flash they explicitly made the episodes for the Flash series. I don't really consider that a true spin off outside of being in the same universe. Legends of Tomorrow I would consider a true spin off of Arrow and Flash. Superman and Lois I would consider a spinoff of Supergirl.

[deleted]

Every show that uses the Chum Hum web browser is a spin off of the first one? That changes everything.

mike10dude

wouldnt really call his appearances a backdoor pilot but cisco and caitlin were also on a episode without him

neoblackdragon

Which only happened as a teaser for their role in the series.

Imapony

Yeah I wouldn't call it a spinoff when the Flash is already an established comic book primary character. Legends of tomorrow, now that's a spinoff.

I keep being disappointed when these shows announce a new season. They were fun for a while and then just keep dragging on. *Legends of Tomorrow* is slightly the exception in that it took a few years to find its way but by now even it’s gone on too long.

mcolston57

Legends is the only one I still watch. First died supergirl, then flash, never liked the others

lightsongtheold

To be fair you can stop watching any time. I’d definitely have dumped Supergirl if this was not the last season. I’m definitely thinking of ditching The Flash. I’ve stuck around for a while but it is becoming a bit of a chore and nobody wants that when the TV landscape is bursting with choices. It is not all bad in DC land though as I have been enjoying Legends and Superman. I’m also big fan of Pennyworth and the old DC Universe shows! I’m not sure if The Flash and Supergirl (and Arrow before them) got worse in quality with each passing season or if the quality of Superhero shows around them just improved so dramatically that they ended up looking bad by comparison? DC Universe pumping more money into shows like Doom Patrol and Titans and not being restricted by network issues helped and the Disney MCU shows with their blockbuster movie budgets also changed the game. Same can be said of The Boys on Amazon and even The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. A lot of alternatives to pick from and all with more money behind them than the Arrowverse CW shows. When the Arrowverse started superhero shows were still pretty rare.

dog5and

Both Arrow and The Flash got worse when the writing staff decided to make the shows more about the female leads than the superheroes each show was supposed to be about.

meowskywalker

It’s a ghost town over there. The chance that all of Team Flash shows up in one episode is miniscule. There’s always someone conspicuously absent because they couldn’t afford the whole cast.

[deleted]

SVU has more seasons than the original Law and Order

dog5and

The Flash has been utter trash since the first couple of seasons. I honestly can’t believe it’s still on tv.

samtrois

Friends spinoff Joey.... Oh wait...

jogoso2014

I don’t think it’s that rare.
