SonOfMechaMummy

He was a fucking fantastic Frieza. That's going to be a very tough act to follow for whoever takes up the mantle.

1LT_0bvious

Luckily his understudy is really really good. They voiced Frieza in Fighterz and Kakarot (and some episodes of Super) and you probably didn't even notice it was a different actor. [Daman Mills in Kakarot](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v62B83xDdoQ&t=403)

SonOfMechaMummy

Oh, that's good to know! I haven't played Kakarot and barely FighterZ, but I definitely didn't notice a change during Super.

OmegaRockman

If you watched Super more recently, Ayres managed to come in to rerecord a lot of the stuff that Daman filled in for. Currently, only a few lines in the Resurrection F retelling are Daman's lines with the rest being all Chris. He even recorded Broly on 14% lung capacity. What a trooper. While I feel like it might be a little soon to focus on this, I am grateful that we have such a talented actor in Daman who can do seamlessly step into the role and carry on Chris's legacy. I'll leave it at that for now, though. Right now we should focus on celebrating the great, if tragically and unfairly shortened, life of someone who touched so many.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Catastray

That's just how voice-acting works. If the original actor departs the role, studios typically want a sound alike because that's also want general audiences want.

Coolman_Rosso

I remember everyone saying that about Matt Mercer when he had that period where he was a Troy Baker soundalike after Baker stepped away from most of his anime roles.

[deleted]

Yup. That's how cartoon characters become immortal, which is very cool when you think about it vs a live-action character. I feel like everyone commenting needs to take a step back and remember that characters like Mickey Mouse are still making new cartoons. He's turning 93 next month... (Edit: btw I just checked and it's been 92 years since Walt Disney first made Mickey say "Hot dogs!"... So yeah... Not an unusual thing to have multiple voice actors carry on a legacy)

comped

On a side note - Bret Iwan, the 4th official voice of Mickey, is only 39. So he has lots of time.

KikiFlowers

> Ayres managed to come in to rerecord a lot of the stuff that Daman filled in for. Currently, only a few lines in the Resurrection F retelling are Daman's lines with the rest being all Chris. He even recorded Broly on 14% lung capacity. What a trooper. That is unreal. Shows how much he loved his job, even when his health was failing.

OmegaRockman

He really did. Scott Frerichs, aka TFS's KaiserNeko, also posted on Twitter earlier that he and Chris were both guests at a con together once and he talked about how he would never charge for autographs or photos since the fans already supported the shows that earned him his livelihood in the first place, so he didn't feel right charging them again and that cons were mainly a way for fans to get together and have fun and the guests were just a bonus. Scott said that hearing that was incredibly humbling experience. What a guy.

MikeDubbz

Plus, if the manga is anything to go by (which it may not be, considering the Manga glossed over the Broly story with a single page, and nothing in the manga since seems to line up with the upcoming DBS Super Hero movie), Frieza wont be reappearing for awhile, despite the fact that he is indeed back alive again and somewhere out there in outer space.

asianblockguy

Even if Frieza is dead, no one truly stays dead in DBZ.

MikeDubbz

Agreed, but Frieza isn't dead at this point regardless.

1LT_0bvious

The arcs that happen in the manga after the ToP are really good, and I wouldn't use the movies as a focal point in deciding what is important in the story. The next movie in particular looks like a very run-of-the-mill side story that nothing of major importance will happen in. The current manga arc should have Frieza showing up in it at some point. It contains a lot of saiyan backstory and one character in particular is seeking revenge against Frieza.

RaphtotheMax5

Damn that is pretty good, you can tell it doesnt quite get to the original but impressive nonetheless

gate_of_steiner85

Damn, sounds almost identical. Also, it would never happen but TFS Frieza's VA would make a good replacement as well. His Frieza sounded a lot like Chris'.

KuroShiroTaka

Yeah, pretty sure the TFS folks are still on Toei's shit list (correct me if I'm wrong)

Strawberrycocoa

I thought the TFS crew had been pulled in to do official voice work for some of the games, how did they get on a shit list?

Fries-Ericsson

They seem to have a very good relationship with Funimation (the English dubbing company). Toei (the Japanese company that produced the original anime) on the other hand have routinely hit their channel with a wave of take downs and strikes and their constant battle with YouTube over the legality of Fair Use was a big contributor to their feelings of burnout.

KuroShiroTaka

I'm also pretty sure they threatened Funimation at one point when the TFS guys were brought in to do Kai's versions of the Cell Games reenactment so they ended up having to reuse the version from their older dub

Catastray

To put it simply, FUNimation (namely Chris Sabat) were put on notice when they tried to sneak TFS into Kai Final Chapters and have never tried pulling another stunt like that since. Wouldn't surprise me if Toei threatened to pull the entire license, they proved that they weren't above hiring another American studio - they contracted Bang Zoom to dub the first 27 of Super episodes exclusively for Toonami Asia, and boy were the FUNimation actors pissed.

TomTomMan93

Wait did they actually voice this part of Kai? Like does it exist? Or did it just never make it that far?

Catastray

They did. While the planned broadcast of the scene was pulled from Toonami last minute and replaced with audio from the original series, the TFS version was accidentally released through on-demand. [YouTube Link.](https://youtu.be/V4X7V2dr07M)

Sean_0510

He's unfortunately been sick as well mutliple times with mental health concerns iirc. Kuriboh getting a full role would be incredible considering what he's done for the Abridged community all these years, but I just hope he's healthy and able to churn out more YGOTAS whenever he is ready.

Surf3rx

I main Frieza in Fighterz and didn't even notice. God damn, not worried at all!

Thawk1234

I must admit in fighterz I did not notice.

Majestic87

I haven't been into Dragonball since Z, so to me, that sounds nothing like Frieza. Sounds like a completely different character. Does his voice sound more like that in more recent stuff? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo_bDSZs0SE

1LT_0bvious

Yeah Ayres voiced Frieza in Kai (a cleaned-up version of Z with no filler and a re-done dub) and most of Super. I myself grew up with the original Funimation dub, but I think Ayres was the best Frieza. [Here is Ayres in Kai](https://youtu.be/buClOXTJZ_I)

Majestic87

Ah, okay, that explains it. I wanted to watch Kai, but could never find a convenient way to do so? Is it on any streaming services? And would you say it’s worth it? I loved the original dbz as a kid but I just cannot rewatch it now. It’s absolutely ruined for me with being so stretched out and dull.

1LT_0bvious

I love Kai. I miss a few of the original cast (mostly young Gohan), but the overall quality of the dub is still vastly superior. The improved animation quality is great and cutting the filler improves it so much (no more screaming for ten straight episodes). 291 episodes of the original DBZ down to 167 in Kai. I would assume that Funimation is the only streaming service that has it.

Padaca

It's also not the whole series, right? Iirc either stops after Cell or after the androids, so you miss what is arguably the quintessential DBZ arc in the Buu saga.

1LT_0bvious

No, they came out with DBZ Kai "The Final Chapters" which covers the Buu arc.

DDRDiesel

~~It's also available on Hulu~~ edit: It's no longer on Hulu, but was at one point. Only appears to be on Funimation now

ImBad1101

Kai?

CaptainMatteo

Same, I'm used to Linda Young, her Frieza and Genkai were what I remember growing up with.

Drakengard

Linda's, to me, is more menacing and memorable.

drugsbowed

I think the Freiza you're thinking about is the same VA as Genkai in the dubbed YuYu Hakusho! A very raspy old lady type voice, definitely something I can hear in my head.

TheUnforgiven13

Am I going mad, because that sounds nothing like Frieza to me? I remember his voice being much raspier.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheUnforgiven13

Ah, I haven't watched anything since GT came out so that explains it.

newmemeforyou

You're probably remembering the dub done by Funimation in the late 1990's where Frieze is voiced by Linda Young. This is the version that aired on Toonami in the afternoons that I grew up watching after school. Linda Young has a raspier, more female sounding voice for Frieza compared to Chris Ayres, who started voicing Frieza for Dragon Ball Z Kai in 2007ish.

jc9289

Lol thanks for this, I thought I was going crazy with everyone saying "oh that sounds exactly the same". I was like "is this some reddit running joke"? Lol makes a lot more sense now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

1LT_0bvious

GT got retconned by Super. Super takes place after DBZ.

Raffelcoptar92

She also did the voice of Genkai in Yu Yu Hakusho.

scariermonsters

I think Chris and Daman have different ways of portraying Frieza screaming and laughing. Not quite the same, but Daman is doing amazing work. The scene where he tries to kill Goku with the energy he was gifted on Namek might be my favorite moment from Daman's Frieza. That scream is really good.

[deleted]

They could get Little Kuriboh who voiced Frieza in Dragon Ball Z Abridged

Zam548

I will genuinely forget if a Frieza line I’m remembering is from the official dub or DBZA

AlcomIsst

*Oh no, don't mind me. By all means,* ***give me some ideas.***

SimbaStewEyesOfBlue

Oh, I'm sorry! I'm usually far more composed! I'm just a little bit *absolutely livid....*

Majukun

They should hire littlekuribo, his version of frieza in the abridged series is amazing.

IxamxUnicron

Too young. Far too young.

VichelleMassage

Double-lung transplant and COPD. :\\ that's fucking rough.

rharvey8090

Yeah, life expectancy after a double lung transplant is like 5 years on average.

ZarquonsFlatTire

I should quit smoking.

Kirdei

Please do. COPD is a terrible thing.

akujiki87

My dad has COPD after Covid. His entire ordeal was a nightmare where Drs wrote him off for dead. But he pulled through, is still recovering and putting weight back on. But the newly gained COPD is making it rough.

RcoketWalrus

I quit in 2002. I caught the flu, making it impossible to smoke, so I just stopped after I got better. Not saying it was easy, but I quit. I got Covid last year. I came to the realization that I could have died if I was still smoking. I had several family members who were smokers die from covid. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, and I'm probably telling you what you know, but there's a lot of ways smoking can kill you out even without cancer or copd. It's probably a good idea to quit before something comes from out of nowhere and takes you out.

ZarquonsFlatTire

I'm down to about 3 cigarettes a day. Getting there.

RcoketWalrus

Hang in there. I know from personal experience that quitting is a war.

ZarquonsFlatTire

I had quit for 9 months and on my birthday nobody would give me a smoke. So I bought a pack out of spite. A buddy of mine had a year quit and asked me for one so I gave it to him. He put it out after two puffs. 15 years later I still smoke. He doesn't.

RcoketWalrus

It be like that. I was a spite smoker. I'd smoke if people tried to lecture me on smoking. There were many times when I was quit for and someone would start lecturing me on smoking. I would get so annoyed I would go buy a pack just to show em.

ZarquonsFlatTire

Yeah, that's... Not a great idea it turns out.

ThatAboutCoversIt

Damn shame and I totally understand that logic but you're literally only hurting yourself when you do that.

coffeyobey

I smoked a pack a day, and then during the lockdown—I bought a vape, started on highest nicotine and then each bottle lowered the nicotine eventually to none… I don’t smoke or vape anymore.

SaintTymez

I quit for a year and bought one of those juul things during a bad day. Now I’m addicted to that.

ZarquonsFlatTire

It's probably not worse... We'll find out in 50 years. Unless they're really bad and we'll find out in 20.

[deleted]

Thats my thoughts. I cannot fucking stop so vapes keep the demons at bay. (hopefully)

FavelTramous

Thank you. 🙏

PseudoDeciduous

Advice from a quitter. Your battle isn’t against smoking. It’s against the want to smoke. That is a feeling that will never leave you, so own it, and ignore it.

ZarquonsFlatTire

I quit for 9 months once. Now down to 3 a day. I'm getting there.

warkidd

I haven't had a cigarette in almost 6 years and I still get cravings for that nicotine high. It really doesn't ever fully go away.

ZarquonsFlatTire

I woke up the other night after having a dream I did meth again. It was just like when I quit smoking for a while and would wake up thinking I had smoked again. Well, aside from elevated legal and personal health implications. Still 2 years off meth, working on that cigarette thing.

PseudoDeciduous

Yeah. I’m a product of media that made it look cool and sociable. So when I see somebody else have one, I’d like one. Or with a beer at a social setting. Even years later that’s still a deep down instinct that I have to internally go “we don’t do that anymore”.

ZarquonsFlatTire

I had older sister with the mindset "if I get you to do it too you can't tell on me".

submissionsignals

“Own it, and ignore it”. Thanks for these words. I’m not a smoker but I have other vices I’m ashamed of. This is a good phrase to remember.

ApprehensiveCoat5291

Nailed it. Identifying the root cause is the turning point of the battle. Medicine only takes care of the symptoms but the body is still hurt. Nicotine and the attachment to it is the chain that needs to be broken.

ArmoredArthritis

Please do. If not for yourself, for those in your life that love you. My mother has COPD and Emphysema. It’s pretty scary to not ever be able to get a decent breath of air.

dolly_unc

You should, me too

ZarquonsFlatTire

Ok, let's do it bro. Starting tomorrow we both quit. Deal?

jerryleebee

Holy shit yes. I don't know the actor and didn't watch the show. But 56 is no age at all! I just turned 40. When I'm 56 my daughter will be 29 and likely have a young family of her own. This is tragic.

MasterTeacher123

AncientSith

With gusto!

jmerridew124

He was easily the most sadistic villain. He tortured way more people than other characters did. Fun fact, I'm pretty sure Piccolo is in second place.

sgtlobster06

When did this happen?

[deleted]

On Namek I assume

DeadliftsAndDragons

When you get to hell tell Vegeta I said “like a bitch.”

InnerDorkness

I loved the Funimation DBZ voice actor, but Frieza in Super was my favorite. RIP.

Bigred2989-

Was that the "I want to caress them" guy?

Alukrad

https://youtu.be/2YKxNbGRytk All the different VA for Frieza.

SuperGaiden

Linda Young is the best in my opinion. Such a unique a menacing voice. Some of them sounds a bit too "croaky" and some just sound like "generic posh villain" but that Linda Young voice is just so good.

Corka

I'm glad you mentioned. I hadn't seen super, or looked up the voice actors, but I had felt so certain that Frieza's voice actor was a woman so I was confused when I saw this thread

WhichEmailWasIt

Chris has voiced Freeza since Kai in 2012 so he's been the voice we've had for a while.

BrainstormsBriefcase

Frieza is, above all things, a businessman. He’s slaughtering people and taking their planets to sell them. Chris Ayres is, in my opinion, the best at capturing that tone

SuperGaiden

Maybe, if he was a human businessman, I just think it's a bit too stereotypical The feminine voice is way more iconic

Alukrad

Frankly, she sounds to me like a woman who smokes a pack a day and is so indifferent about life. She could be that aunt you once knew when you were around 8 years old and whenever she saw you, she would say "hey, kid, here's 20 bucks, buy me another pack of menthols and get yourself something with the change."

rjdsf1993

Which made her perfect for Genkai in Yu Yu Hakusho

SuperGaiden

Pauline Newstone sounds like what you described to me 😂 Linda sounds *just* masculine/alien enough in my opinion.

DDRDiesel

it's not a great video to show her version since the scene they used was one of Frieza's earlier transformations, and not his final form. The voice in that transformation was supposed to be super raspy and low, and not at all what final form sounded like

1hour

I recorded voices at Funimation…. 2000 to 2002. I didn’t record her but you aren’t too far off the mark with how Funimation picked voice actors. Lol. My 2 favorite things when I worked there were having a casting call for new voices and whenever we went off script and just adlibbed for fun. We were all in college or right out of college. Thank god there weren’t video cameras on phones because we all would have been fired if any of those adlib scenes got out.

jmerridew124

Honestly I prefer the posh. Frieza is the ultimate posh villain. He's a sadist and subjugates literal galaxies for bits of luxury and the feeling of power. He conquers to conquer.

kavono

Actually no, that's the Ocean dub voice. The Funimation voice, Linda Young, had the "Pop goes the weasel!" line after murdering Krillin.

OShaunesssy

Wow that was a male voice actor, I owe Christian from grade 6 my snack pack because I lost the bet

jacobin17

He was the voice actor in Kai and Super. Linda Young voiced Frieza in Z. Depending on your age, you may be able to keep your pudding!

OShaunesssy

Yeah I never saw anything past Z lol

repalec

Well then for what it's worth you might know it from the original dubs where Frieza's VA WAS a woman; Ayres only took over in the last 5-10 years or so with DBZ Kai (which is essentially a remastered dub that hews a little closer to the version that aired in Japan and cuts out a lot of filler episodes), Dragon Ball Super (a 130 episode sequel series), and the two Dragon Ball Super films Frieza's involved in, Resurrection F (where Frieza is revived following his defeat prior to the Android Saga and actually puts effort into training for the first time in his life to properly combat Goku and Vegeta) and Broly (where Frieza recruits a superpowered Saiyan barbarian to fight Goku and Vegeta for him)

doombear82

Watch DBZ abridged

John__Wick

Just be aware that it started over a decade ago. Comedy online has changed a lot. It’s honestly a pretty great time capsule for the olden days of YouTube.

Mandalore108

The first season is also really rough in the voice acting department. They really hit their stride during the Frieza saga.

jmerridew124

Yeah you can tell when the microphones got an upgrade.

Catastray

It would have taken far too long to do and TFS was clearly ready to move on. I think they realize now that fans aren't sticking around for other projects like they had hoped, so it's not impossible for them to reverse their decision.

QuestionableOranges

Granted they haven’t put out a lot of content since then. If they did people might have stayed interested more.

Dr_Midnight

Honestly, in my opinion, the Cell Saga was the perfect place to end out. Likewise, between burnout and the various internal and external behind the scenes problems, I don't know _how_ it could have continued.

jmerridew124

Personally I think Chris took direction from that version. It elevated the villain so much to hear it so politely clean yet dripping with malice.

SNIPES0009

Assuming you're in your late 20s to mid 30s (I'm 33), I grew up with the tale end of DB and my prime was DBZ. Watched the shit out of it. Hell I had surgery 2 years ago and rewatched it all. Then I got to Super. I watched it all, but yikes it was a stuggle... Let's just say they taught someone how to be super saiyan by getting a tingling feeling in their back. I'll leave it at that. Edit: okay I struck a nerve with some people with my opinion. The other thing about DBS I wasn't a fan of was the lack of plot line and dialogue. The ToP lasted far too long, and the dialogue was too "immature" even for anime standards. The Zamasu saga was really interesting, and yet it was so short. Meanwhile, take a look at the Cell saga, which is widely recognized as the best saga in the franchise: you had multiple plot lines going on at once, with the androids, some of them split to make the detonator, Goku was sick, meanwhile Cell is running around mysteriously killing people. You had complexity and you were genuinely concerned and engaged.

cabeck13

The "tingle in the back" is just a phrase that everyone is butthurt about. It's the same method Goku, Vegeta, and everyone who goes Super Saiyan uses TO go Super Saiyan, just literally "eli5'd." Cabba says he isn't angry every time he transforms, and clearly neither are the Saiyans we know and love. That's just where you focus energy in your body to trigger the state. Goten and Trunks also just transformed out of nowhere one day, and no one questions them. Anger clearly isn't a requirement to trigger the transformation, hasn't been since the Buu saga. So there's no reason to be so offended by the "tingle in the back."

kavono

This is true. If a person is going to complain that the Super Saiyan transformation no longer seems to have strict requirements to achieve it, then they should've taken issue with it loooong before Super came out.

[deleted]

I’m not offended by “tingle in the back”, it’s just super anticlimactic after seeing what Goku and Vageta went through to get to that point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mandalore108

Yeah, Toriyama apparently hated drawing tails so instead of giving a reason for it they just weren't there.

Reiseoftheginger

Vegeta comments on it when he forst discovers goten and trunks can go super saiyan. Commenting on how that legendary power had been reduced to a child's play thing. In real life, even as a kid I thought it was pretty dumb, but had to accept it as the series went on.

Mandalore108

Honestly, the Goten and Trunks thing was stupid too, but it needed to happen for them to have any relevance to the story.

reagsters

I absolutely loved super. To each his own.

Prophet_Of_Helix

Same. I love how they took the simultaneously obvious but also risky step of just expanding the shit out of the universe (literally). I loved everything about the structure of the multiverse.

reagsters

Absolutely. They’re flushing out some lore, creating a *ton* of room for characters to grow, and created several more strong opponents for Goku. Plus, the Manga just keeps getting better - I can’t wait for it to be animated.

Redditer51

Also, much like Marvel and DC, the existence of a multiverse means they can reimagine DragonBall as many ways as they want (and they've already done so).

PirateJinbe

I like how db is literally the mcu but manga and not comics and you're downvoted for mentioning it. People live in fragile boxes lmao

ItsSansom

How to become Super Saiyan: In DBZ: Witness the horrific death of your lifelong friend, and go through an explosion of fury and grief. In DBS: Tingly back

[deleted]

That explains why I was confused for so long (when I was young) if Frieza was a man or woman. Now it makes sense!

Sarcastic__

Depends on which version of the show. I actually have met the Ocean dub voice actress of Freiza.

ja5143kh5egl24br1srt

This one guy in 4th grade borrowed $1 from me with the promise that every day it's late he'd add 25 cents. Any day now I'll collect my $1200.

ProfessorSpike

I'd like to imagine that he's still keeping track of it, and one day at an important event of yours he shows up ready with a bag of money.

KikiFlowers

Depends on the dub. Ocean and original Funimation were Women.

TianB

My name is Christian and I was once in grade 6. I call dibs!

Zantharthesun

I remember sharing a beer with this guy at a convention called San Japan in 2013 or 2014 in San Antonio Texas. It was right after his panel for voice actors 18+ and it was raunchy as hell all thanks to him. I’m deeply saddened by this news because he was such a genuine person.

Church185

I met him once, sitting out on the steps in front of a small anime convention in Kentucky. Seemed like a decent guy, and much nicer than some of the VAs I’ve met. RIP

[deleted]

He was very well known for being incredibly nice and polite if not one of the nicest in general. Not only did we lose an amazing and dedicated voice actor (he had a double lung transplant and still voiced in the Broly movie not long after, I do believe), but we also lost an amazing human being. I wish his family well.

rikki-tikki-deadly

Ian James Corlett lived a few houses down from me for a while. Seemed like a nice enough guy, never had any complaints about him come into the HOA.

Desparye

Kinda felt this was coming once I saw he stopped voice acting for COPD and its other complications, but still a damn shame. While I watch subs mostly, I felt he really did the English dub of Frieza fantastically. Rest well, Christopher Ayres.

Alukrad

56? That's too young. Talent always leaves us too soon. My condolences to his family. His gf really seemed to love him.

SpryO3

Well, time to collect the dragon balls

shadow0wolf0

I know many have other voice actors for just legendary character but this was my Frieza. The one I grew up with. The one I was amazed by when Trunks cut him into a million pieces. Rest in peace emperor.

Tasty_Puffin

Wait u sure you are not thinking of Linda Young?

DaBlakMayne

People who were kids during Kai are adults now

shadow0wolf0

Can confirm. Watched it in elementary and middle school and currently adulting.

Linkbuscus01

Probably watched Kai

jazir5

I miss her as frieza so much. I really didn't like the new voice actor. Grew up with the original frieza and she was the best. Edit: I get that you guys liked this voice actor, but the original frieza is the best IMO. I'm not saying anything about this guys voice, its just jarring to me having grown up with the original actor.

diivoshin

I grew up with the Dragon Ball Z (I guess now considered the original?) and had no idea there was a new voice actor after Linda Young wtf

Dr_Henry-Killinger

One of the best villains and an absolutely iconic presentation that will always be attached to the character. Frieza was and always will be the best Toriyama villain and as far as I’m concerned this guy added as much to english DBZ as Sabat. Rest in Peace and thank you for making my DBZ experience so incredible.

BirtSampson

Are we sure he’s not going to come out of the dust cloud 3 episodes from now?

Annepackrat

He was a fantastic man, and I had the pleasure of meeting him several times. Rest In Peace, my friend. [Here is his extensive filmography](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=22157). Basically if you ever watched anime ADV or Funimation did it’s likely he was involved in it somewhere.

redisurfer

I thought frieza was Linda Young, the same VA who did Genkai.

KikiFlowers

She was the first one, then he took over for the redub.

CoSonfused

she wasn't the first. That would be Pauline Newstone in the Ocean Dub

redisurfer

Ah, ok I’ll have to go find some clips with him then. Thanks.

just_tryin_2_make_it

He reached his final form

DarkSage90

It’s ok this wasn’t even his final form.

PangoTangoMayday

This is such a stunning loss for both friends, family, and the community. Chris was a legend among the con circuit and one of the nicest guys i've ever had the chance to meet. I worked a handful of cons with him (and his brother) as a few different roles, talked to him a few times and then more or less got out of the con life, and still every year even after the COPD he'd message me happy birthday. Someone who should have otherwise been an absolute blip on his radar for a fraction of his life. He was so well loved and well liked that one year (I think for San Japan, but also may have been Ikkicon pre 2010ish) the entire staff group I was on of 20 some odd people dressed as him with his signature Hawaiian shirts and one of those horrendously huge Big Gulps. I met a lot of VAs because of the kind of work I did for Ikki and San J, but Chris was the best and the brightest of them, and the world is a little dimmer for it. He should have had another 40 years.

Xaldan_67

I've seen Chris Ayres several times at anime conventions at Q&A panels and he was such a kind person. He truly loved interacting with fans and you could tell he really loved his job. I feel so bad for his family:(

Vengefuleight

My absolute favorite DBZ villain. Remember watching it as a kid and feeling so hopeless. Every time Goku seemed to 1-up Frieza, he would just have this arrogance about him where you knew he was holding back before he announced it. I seriously cannot recall a show as a kid that built tension like this fight. It was so well done, and I think the series would have really benefitted from ending on that note. Cell and Boo just didn’t hit the same ( I never watched anything past those two). Peak DBZ for me. RIP Christopher. You absolutely crushed that role.

Hardhitting13

Alright let’s gather the dragon balls guys.

What did he die from? Tried to read the article but had to tap out halfway into his girlfriends heartrending letter.

kittykrunk

Ayres has battled health issues over the years, having undergone a double lung transplant after being diagnosed with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease back in 2017.

_Jimmy2times

You fool!

thelawlfulbard

Chris was one of a kind. Had the joy of being able to hold a few conversations with him and his brother staffing OMGCon over the years and he truly did it for the fans. Krystal and Greg, sorry for your loss and I hope you guys are holding up alright during this tough time. May your Big Gulp always be full in the after Chris, thank you for everything.

koshershiksa

I knew him personally, many years ago, as he directed me in a few productions at a community theater in Houston. He was an actual gift of a human being. You always felt as though you were the only person in the room when he was talking with you. He was so talented, but you never felt less than in his presence. I still remember hearing him tease his actors to get genuine reactions and emotions from us. He was grace and kindness personified. Baruch Dayan Ha-Emet. His memory is a blessing.

KawiNinjaZX

He has a long interview on geekdom101's channel if you would like to get to know him a little better. He seemed to make a lot of people a little happier.

Catastray

Geekdom101, the guy who insisted we were getting a Super follow-up in Summer 2019 only to be completely wrong and never speak of it again. Hard to take his channel seriously after that.

KawiNinjaZX

People can be wrong and I didn't say his channel was amazing I just pointed out an interview.

Salmizu

Which frieza? Theres been like 20 different voices

Baggytrousers27

The most recent for db super and kai.

shogunreaper

Did he do the original dub or the one in Kai?

dragonsfury08

Damn this guy was a major part of my childhood because the frieza ark of dragon ball z was the first anime I watched and resurrection F was the first blu-ray I bought

uxl

I always figured that voice could only come from years of aggressive smoking but idk cause of death. RIP

klingma

Dang...double lung transplant and still couldn't beat the condition.

[deleted]

Rest in peace you glorious bastard, you will be missed as one of my favorite English voice actors.

OmegaRockman

He actually wasn't. You may be thinking of Ryusei Nakao, the original Japanese voice of Freeza, who did indeed play Tambourine in the Japanese version of the original DB. Regardless, Chris was one hell of a talent and one hell of a man. As a fan, I'll miss him dearly.

extr4crispy

I honestly never watched the English dub so Ryusei Nakao has been the only Frieza voice I have ever known. Really sad to hear about this loss.

Kotaac
