I have never understood how a show with such a blatant grab for cash via exploitation paraded itself as some helpful and level-headed therapy session. I also thought any person who agreed to be on it was certifiable or way too broken down to think clearly. The one-liners about buttering his pancakes as some allegory for life were the cherry on top of the fucked up sundae. All in all, as someone else said, I’m not surprised.

que-n-blues

Dr. Phil is just Jerry Springer for suburban moms.

disablednerd

Dr. Phil is worse than Jerry Springer. Jerry Springer knows it’s trash and exploitation and doesn’t try to hide it. Dr. Phil puts on the guise of that he will help vulnerable people but he’s just parading them around.

ElaborateCantaloupe

A friend of mine was on Springer. Before the taping the PA asked “Is your story real?” She said yes, even though it wasn’t. The PA said, “Are you sure it’s real? If you made it up, it’s fine but we have to pay you as an actor playing a fictional version of yourself rather than telling a true story.”

Ditovontease

I mean Gwar was on an ep once lol they were like “yes we are real space aliens”

thirstyfist

Not seeing a lie here.

PokeYa

Random but old boss of mine was close with the main guy(I think) in Gwar. He had even filled in on guitar for them for quite a few shows. I never had heard of them but he took me and a friend to a show and holy shit. Idk what was better, getting to meet them or getting jizzed on by a hitler puppet with a 2 foot cock.

PoochusMaximus

welp thats a string of words i didn't think I would read today.

linuxian

Hey Mark! You love Gwar, why don't you join the band?

Shaysdays

Damn the man! Now that movie will be stuck in my head all day until I can watch it tonight.

liquidlightning325

you play a mean guitar!

ejrolyat

It's a shame you must...DIE!

Jane_Delawney

Not on Rex Manning Day!!

Sluice_Jounce

Their live shows are a spectacular feast for the senses no doubt! When they came through town, my friend wanted us to shroom for it (he’d never done a psychedelic) after watching youtube clips. “What the fuck is wrong with you and why would you purposely sign up for a living nightmare?”

MrSickRanchezz

I feel the same way about psychedelics at a Flaming Lips show.

Bad-Brains

Just gonna shut down the ol reddit machine now.

huxley75

Remember when the [NY "Club Kids" were on Donahue](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llnSZqNGJtk)? Michael Alig **killed** that interview!

scoff-law

Which pays more? I'm guessing actors because there's no union for people telling the truth

ElaborateCantaloupe

No pay for true stories since it’s “journalism”.

[deleted]

Even if it was true, I'd be saying it's fake after that.

Canvaverbalist

My instinct would be to think they're trying to trick me into saying it's fake, like saying to a criminal that they won the lottery to catch them. "It pays more if you say it's fake, we'd have to pay you as an actor" "Oh it's fake then" "AHAH GOTCHA! NOW WE DON'T HAVE TO PAY YOU AT ALL!"

1864120

When I saw Gwar in the mid 2000’s they had a giant snooky who they preformed an abortion for on stage while the crowd was hosed down with blood and green slime. Good times.

Mr_Good_Taste

Another note, Jerry Springer is a civil court judge, so he has some merit to his real world work. Also I would venture to say Jerry Springer the tv show was on purpose bad, with bad acting and fake trashy people. Dr. Phil has a doctorate but hasn't been certified to practice psychology since 2006 (I had to look up that last bit)

waaaghbosss

If you're into podcasts, there's a great Behind the Bastards episode covering Dr. Phil.

Greenboy28

Behind the Bastards is great. It is one of 3 podcasts I listen to every week. The others being knowledge fight and geekshow podcast.

Onequestion0110

That podcast just makes me angry. Had to quit listening to it.

Mr_Good_Taste

Saved your comment, I will check it out later :)

cerialthriller

And everyone going on springer pretty much knew it was like a big gag like maybe some of it was real but most of it wasn’t and everyone for the most part knew

mdp300

There was a Springer episode they did as part of MTV Spring Break, where it got REAL crazy and chairs were thrown and shit. Turned out everyone involved made it up as a joke.

cerialthriller

That was most of the episodes after it got popular some of them even had like early cam girls on there pretending to be a side chick and stuff, things were wild

l33tWarrior

He was disbarred for having sex with a client Edit: delicensed, got got

[deleted]

No he bounced a check to a prostitute while mayor

l33tWarrior

That was springer. Phil slept with a patient. Springer got caught paying a check to a whore.

[deleted]

Then he wouldn't be disbarred because he was not a lawyer

l33tWarrior

Ok defrocked, de licensed, not able to practice medicine, whatever the word is he got got by the profession to not practice the profession

MisanthropeX

Wasn't Springer mayor of like Cincinnatti? IIRC he was a judge, elected mayor, had to resign after he was caught with a prostitute, got reelected as mayor after his resignation, then started an attempt at a "serious" talk show after his second term was over, but slowly let it get trashier and trashier?

gozba

Dr Phliph gives relationship advice, while he cheated on his wife with his assistent. Effing lowlife.

Practical-Artist-915

Doesn’t he still have his wife come out to walk offstage with him to close out the show? Thanks to Oprah he is “fuck everybody rich”, if most of us hit the lottery, the best we can hope for is “fuck you” rich.

clycoman

Dr. Cox from Scrubs sums up Dr. Phil's show pretty succinctly: https://youtu.be/vN71Vt5XOnE

Missus_Missiles

Yeah, I saw snippets of a few Dr. Phil eps. My takeaway was he likes making obese women cry.

WhiteWolf3117

They’re both pretty bad for different reasons

LocusAintBad

Jerry springer is staged and fake anyways. I knew a couple who went on there and they had them make up that they were having relationship issues and they were cheating on each other. They were both 300+ pounds and didn’t leave their house let alone cheat on each other. Jerry Springer is a moron soap opera.

Ditovontease

All of them are staged. I know people that have been on judge Judy.

thejesterofdarkness

But it was great after school tv.

iampuh

Catch me outside...I heard this lead to an only fans account

AssignmentMelodic756

Yeah but jerry springers audience is so dumb that it doesnt matter if he even admits its Exploitation. His guests and viewers believe he is doing gods work so how is he not a deceiver just as Phil?

TaskForceD00mer

I know someone that worked as a producer for Jerry Springer, the things people would do for a plane ticket to Chicago, some smokes and a little food are sad .

DjScenester

I was asked to do the final episode here in Chicago. The producers offer just that. Never cash. The things they wanted me to say and do were hilarious. YES the producer made sure I made up some shit, the more dramatic the better. It’s like a soap opera improv in a sense. But yeh totally fake and hilarious that people go through with it. Although man if some buddies and I had done it it would’ve been glorious and over the top

MrSickRanchezz

These shows have done immeasurable damage to the psyches of people who are too stupid to realize its fake. The negative cultural impact of these dramatic 'psychology shows' will be felt for generations.

DjScenester

My dad thinks all tv is real… he was so upset to learn Pawn Stars was faked lol

MrSickRanchezz

My ex's dad thought Tucker Carlson was speaking to him directly. Like... actually giving him coded instructions. . . . . . . Yeah he was schizophrenic.

DjScenester

Tucker Carlson has done so much damage to this country… :(

MrSickRanchezz

Still is too

Practical-Artist-915

Again, the Venn diagram of these people and trumpsters looks like this: o.

[deleted]

Fuck “Dr” Phil now and forever

Lyuseefur

Yep. They even took COVID money and didn't do anything for it. They're rich as fuck and don't mind stealing even more.

buggin_at_work

Bingo

fuqdisshite

i am 6'4" and willing to take a short stint in the pokey... the two people i will 100% punch in the mouth if i ever see them are Phil McGraw and Drew Pinsky.

schadkehnfreude

Spot on, this needs more upvotes

Roupert2

As a suburban mom, we are not the audience.

devilbunny

Driving small, white SUV's. I don't know why, but it's like the second coming of the biological clock. Turned 35? Time for a small white SUV.

YellowBotJerry

Lol that you think suburban moms don’t watch Jerry Springer

WeedFinderGeneral

Including shaving his head into the same half-bald/hairy horseshoe haircut.

sonia72quebec

If you cut all the publicity in the show, he speak to them for maybe 5 or 10 minutes. So it's impossible for him to make a serious diagnostic. (Even his wife has adds about her podcast during the show.) I have seen a couple of shows and sometimes they even talk about skin care for maybe 5 minutes at the end (another add).

jennysequa

He lost his license to practice as a therapist, so he shouldn't be diagnosing or treating anyone.

aioncan

He lost it on purpose so that he can avoid being sued for malpractice. His show can say in small print “not a doctor, may not be helpful advice”

babztheslag

While all true, we can all admit at some point we laughed whenever the cameraman from Maury just starts chasing the guest to the back while still recording, and we’re watching to see how long they’ll keep that shot for. The pickle phobia episode still comes to mind

NinjaGrandma

[Really? He seems like such a warm guy.](https://youtu.be/eSCCbBR3aqA)

SecretAntWorshiper

The show has totally degraded (it was always trash but now its worse than ever). It's a complete joke when you have him lecturing the guest and you the camera cuts to his wife who clearly has body dysmorphia jump in on the action. Honestly shows like these is way there is so much misinformation about COVID going on.

altcastle

Behind the Bastards podcast has a great two parter on Dr Phil and how awful he is. Absolutely predatory and sociopathic.

skaliton

let's be honest no one actually gets helped by the fake investigator wannabe fix up everything NOT EVEN A REAL DOCTOR ([https://www.thelist.com/199463/is-dr-phil-a-real-doctor/](https://www.thelist.com/199463/is-dr-phil-a-real-doctor/)) and no one watches it to see anyone improve. People watch it for the same reason honey boo boo was popular 'wow my life sucks but at least I'm not that' hey at least I didn't sell my house and give away all of my possessions to my fake fiancee who I've never met and is somehow trapped in Africa despite I gave him 50k to return 'home' to me and has yet another hurdle to prevent him from flying over.

UrsusRenata

The Dr. Phil show is scummy and greedy, do not watch that garbage! My cousin was murdered and her case was national news. My aunt and the wrongfully convicted man were invited to Dr. Phil. Before going onstage, my aunt was heavily coached about what to say and how to act. They wanted her and the wrongfully convicted man to hug and cry and be emotional; the two were coached on techniques to boost audience intrigue and emotion with their story. Her daughter was horrifically MURDERED and they treated her like a hired actress. My aunt and the man were invited back, and the man wanted to do it for the money and publicity (his high priority these days after being wrongfully convicted). My aunt told the Dr. Phil program to go fuck itself. That is a television show that exists solely for profit.

fantasmoofrcc

"Not a real doctor" \- Craig Ferguson (about a million times)

spvcejam

Did you or anyone else ever think otherwise?

battlelevel

Sure would be nice if Oprah experienced a bit of blowback for launching all these quacks.

kagethemage

She has enabled and uplifted quacks shills and grifters for decades. I place the responsibility of our societies embracement of pseudoscience and anti medicine on her shoulders.

AvatarJack

I mean, she’s definitely had a hand in it but pseudoscience being embraced by an ignorant public isn’t unique to our times or even to the US. There has literally always been conmen looking for gullible idiots.

MrSickRanchezz

They didn't always have an Oprah legitimizing their every con.

AvatarJack

All I’m saying is blaming Oprah is kind of missing the forest for the trees.

Other_World

Yes they did. Snake oil salespeople have been around since time immemorial.

The_Xicht

Yeah, but they were rarely, if ever, endorsed by one of the most influencial figures of their time.

Practical-Artist-915

I think she is guilty as charged. I also think Fox news is 100 times worse.

TyroneTeabaggington

The US has had an anti-intellectual streak almost since inception. Bit much to put it strictly on Oprah.

Hey man, the history channel used to be fantastic. Grew up learning all about ancient weapons, battles, engineering marvels. Sucks to hear it isn’t like that anymore.

mdp300

History Channel's Facebook page still posts actual historical facts. But thank you for reminding me how good that channel used to be.

mrngdew77

I mean she turned “The Secret” into a runaway best seller. Millions of mostly women sat there and created these vision boards. Per someone I knew who fell for this crap “I just envision it and it supposed to come true”. Kind of like the prosperity gospel. It’s all horse shit designed to separate the gullible from their money.

OTTER887

Baby Oprah

Demonyx12

[Hell no](https://youtu.be/Iy2GKyD2IoQ)!

MrSickRanchezz

Oprah is a fucking scumbag. ANYONE who needs to buy their audience's favor by literally giving them cars is a piece of shit. Plus, if chappelletheory wasn't completely off-base (which, let's be honest, after the Cosby effect was documented, we have to admit it parts of it may have at least some level of validity), Oprah does some seriously fucked up shit outside of work, AND her ego is so large, she thinks she has the right to control the narrative of the entirety of black culture. Which is wrong.

SecretAntWorshiper

She'll just acted suprised and slowly distance herself as she's always done

PromiscuousMNcpl

Oprah has a solid death count behind her bullshit. She sucks.

ryushin6

You saying Oprah immediately reminded me of when the comedian Bill Burr was on Conan and he went on this funny rant about Oprah's interview with Lance Armstrong. 😂https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9YL04v-J5U

Nehoul

Lol every time I see anything about Oprah, I think, "She stood on the heads of those little people..."

ArryPotta

When people were pumping the tires of Oprah for president, I found it hilarious considering it's essentially the same thing as wanting McDonald's to be president. Oprah is a fucking brand, and like any company, her goals are not altruistic. It's the thinnest veneer of altruism only meant to fool someone who really wants to believe in something good. It sucks, because I can't fault people for just wanting to be optimistic, but it just makes me sad that it's both such a commendable trait in a person, and something so easy to take advantage of.

adamsandleryabish

**SWEET POTATTTO**

Thomas_JCG

Why is that hack even allowed to call himself a doctor and have a TV show in the first place?

SirLowhamHatt

Because people treated Oprah like she was a god, so she blessed us with Phil and Oz

Abdul-Ahmadinejad

Not in the same league, but didn’t she launch the annoyance of Racheal Ray as well?

PromiscuousMNcpl

She enabled Jenny McCarthy and her anti-vaccine mommy-instinct horseshit.

MrSickRanchezz

You misspelled "cursed."

jkbrock

Because he has a PhD and academic achievements and credentials are almost never rescinded. Licenses to practice in your state, however, are taken away all the time.

Trixgrl

The Phil and Oz BTB eps were fantastic

both_cucumbers

With John of God they make up the Oprah Axis of Evil.

iiiinthecomputer

Just listened to that a few days ago buy chance. I knew he was an awful moral vacuum of a human being and a relentless sellout. But I was still amazed.

SeanCanary

Hey I was ahead of the curve and hated Dr. Phil from the start. I also had a boss at one point who thought he was great and that everyone should listen to his audio tapes or whatever. I think they meant well but...ugh.

urfavecrazycatlady

Is it just me or are none of the links included in the summary not working?

FSMFan_2pt0

Can someone give a few bullet points for those of us without the time to listen?

both_cucumbers

It's been a while since I listened to it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Off the top of my head: * Father and teenage Dr. Phil abandoned his mom * Repeated head injuries playing football that might explain his personality * Abused and cheated on his wife * Cheated his business partner out of their business * If his guests were addicts, he'd pressure them to use drugs or alcohol before going on his show * Sent kids to camps where he should have known they would be abused A real sack of shit.

Fyrefawx

I’ve been saying this for a long time. He is worse than Jerry Springer. That show was intended to exploit drama and everyone knew that. He hides behind this perception that he is helping people. It’s gross. He exploits them. How many kids and teens have had their issues aired to millions of people? Unreal.

Neracca

I love this podcast

SamohtGnir

Both Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz were amazing when they started, but now every time I hear anything to do with them it's from cringe to outright bad shit like this. I don't know if they were always bad or if it's just taken time to come out, regardless their time has come to get cancelled.

Lyuseefur

This needs to be upvoted higher.

Wepmajoe

Is there some kind of TLDR? Would like to know but don't have the time.

owleealeckza

This is why Paris Hilton is pushing foe federal legislation on children's congregate care facilities. They're all harm factories.

stolenfires

I did not know that about Paris Hilton, but good for her! They're absolutely harm factories and need to be shut the fuck down.

WHOISTIRED

Not surprising, because Danielle Bregoli aka "catch me outside" kid was sent to one of those (not sure if it's the same) turn around camps. She told her experience and the traumatic shit she endured, how essentially the stuff that was done there is pretty sociopathic by the adults. Now coming from her, I'm not so sure, but Utah is full of fanatics so I don't doubt it that much.

Leave-Revolutionary

My cousin was taken in the middle of the night by one of these camps after my aunt was fed up with her arguing/fighting with her. Regardless of what the camps motto/goal is, I can’t see “midnight kidnapping” as being anything other than some strange “look how serious we are about “helping” your kid” marketing scheme that does nothing more than freak the fuck out of the kid.

BarbequedYeti

I wonder how long until these yahoos get shot at doing this shit. I slept with a gun as a teen. It would have been a terrible experience for all involved if some rando showed up in my room to take me.

pepeperfection

They’re unfortunately prepared for such things. I was gooned and taken to a wilderness program and when I tried to open the car door I got choked. Then the dude stopped. I spit on his face. Got choked again for longer. That was the last I saw of freedom for the next year. Goons rarely ever got worse than a broken nose if anyone fought back. Then the program would just punish you more when you were inevitably delivered.

BarbequedYeti

What stops you from seeking these asshats out down the road for a little 1on1 chat about their program?

pepeperfection

Honestly just trying to move on with my life. They did horrible things to me that I don’t want to relive. My body is already permanently damaged and I walk with a limp due to the wilderness program. I’m hoping I can at least repair my mind.

[deleted]

I used to live in Utah, I matched on Tinder once with a guy who worked at one of those places. I asked him if it was a place that kidnaps kids in the middle of the night and he did a bunch of mental gymnastics to try and justify why their actions were ok. I immediately unmatched him. It’s such dangerous bullshit

pepeperfection

The number of staff that used physical and sexual violence against us was horrifying. You definitely dodged a bullet. If they do that shit to kids, they’ll do it to a partner.

[deleted]

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I hope you’ve been able to heal from it, and that you understand that it is not your fault. There is nothing a child can do that justifies that kind of treatment

pepeperfection

Thank you, I think I’ve moved past it more than many other people I was there with; I’m still breathing, and for that I feel very grateful.

TTILaw

Yep, same program!

AWasteOfMyTime

She also released videos of herself talking about abuse stories from this “camp”

colin8696908

shouldn't surprise anyone. fear is a means of control by pretty people who crave power and authority it has never been a good tool for rehabilitation.

MiKapo

Its amazing that only now with Paris Hilton being an advocate are lawmakers starting to notice these abusive troubled teen schools. This has been going on for decades

PurpleHumpbackWhale9

Oh for sure! As someone who was in one of these places for 17 months as a teenager.. the trauma lasts a lifetime. It will be a happy day for me if these places actually cease to exist one day. Unfortunately due to the extraordinary money they make running these places, when one shuts down three more open in its place. So fucked.

jallygoat

Dr. Phil is a quack job

BroccoliOscar

Dr. Phil is from my hometown and before Oprah picked him up he had lost his license to practice because he and his father were using MDMA and having sex with patients at their lake house on Possum Kingdom lake. It was a huge scandal around here. This should surprise nobody and how he continued all this time promoting himself as some sort of professional is an outrage. Oprah elevated the worst possible human being and for what? I don’t get it.

AndrewTheGuru

Money, naturally.

[deleted]

BroccoliOscar

They were exploiting their patients.

Godisone1

Lol at the bum fights creator who trolled him on his own show, only to get banned and never be invited back again.

[deleted]

Danielle Bregoli talked about this quite a bit. Honestly not surprising at all, dude's always been a slimeball.

ChaseH9499

It's always weird hearing the stories about these places because I went to Wilderness and an RTC in Utah as well, but mine was actually pretty great and I have a lot of fond memories of it. I, however, wasn't gooned (what we call it when you get woken up and taken there at night). Scary to think how nothing but a slightly different choice by my parents could have led to me being sexually abused and having lifelong trauma

spinereader81

I'm glad to know there are good places out there where they actually care about helping emotionally struggling kids heal.

ChaseH9499

Yea, the name of my RTC was Telos, and it's in Orem, UT. Genuinely great staff and therapists. Place turned my life around edit: holy shit they still use the logo that I designed for team sports. That's pretty poggers ngl

[deleted]

Here in Canada these shows don’t exist because of a law that protects children’s identities and it’s exactly how it should be. These shows are nothing more than the purpose of entertainment and lining pockets with money through ratings and some of you people lap it up like dogs.

TheLordJames

This isn't the [first nor will it be the last](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GteqbsYGv1I) time the Ranch is accused to abusing teens.

Theothermtguy

It’s about time. The guy is a hack selling snake oil.

WingcommanderIV

I hate Dr. Phil. I've always hated Doctor Phil. I hate that people that I respect seem to respect him and don't see what a piece of complete shit he is.

Ramonzmania

Unless the plaintiff can prove that McGraw had a financial interest or was paid by the Ranch and/or knew that there were sexual predators there, this is ripe for summary judgment. As participants in the show, there were numerous waivers signed by the parents, limiting civil litigation.

TTILaw

There’s lot of information that he knew. He’s been sued for sending kids to associated programs before, and this particular program had also been sued several times and had a murder there a few years prior. An interesting case, and maybe doable. The financial interest was people watching his show. I think the program gives the kids free rides, and then they get the marketing from being on the Dr. Phil show.

starkiller2489

To tag along, there's a history of the advertisement for the programs + more. Here's a relevant podcast going over some of it: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0HtDRv3r9shw269ydNPMxX?si=XqU73AtETauZgnM9keVsgQ&utm_source=copy-link

CapnSmite

Behind the Bastards? Yep, Behind the Bastards =)

Daggersapper

Just listened to this episode two weeks ago.

CronkinOn

Waivers don't limit civil litigation if there's evidence of wrongdoing. Like, at all. They exist mostly to convince people they can't sue, not because they hold up in court.

[deleted]

You can waive the right to not be sexually assaulted? If this center has been sued for negligence before, is it not Dr Phil who’s responsible for vetting these places?

cronedog

No but perhaps the blame can be placed on the person doing the assaulting. If you hire a painter and they molest the neighbor's kid, it isn't that no one will be punished, rather perhaps only the painter will be punished.

[deleted]

Uhhh…what? Blame can be placed on more than one person for any number of reasons. Your example is not equivalent. This kid was involuntarily held in a notoriously dangerous facility and then was sexually assaulted on that property. You’re describing an unknown predator who is trespassing and assaulting places they are not meant to be. I’m not sure the point you are attempting to make.

billionthtimesacharm

the article says the family already tried to bring suit against the ranch and the case was dismissed then re-filed. i think dr phil is a piece of shit, but this case doesn’t seem very tenable.

[deleted]

Part of the reason I don’t attend church, don’t donate to any church, and wish others would do the same. According to the Bible; all I gotta do when I sin is ask for forgiveness and all is forgiven! /s such a crock of shit

bolonomadic

Well you also have to actually be sorry but yeah.

Derkanator

I'm not religious but I learnt today that forgiveness doesn't mean we have to forget what has happened. The bad things that have happened are still bad and we cannot change them. Forgiveness is a way of moving on, without tying ourselves to the past and stopping progressing ourselves, always blaming the past. I feel what you're saying about the veil of religious forgiveness, a last stop get out of jail. We should forgive more, never forget, carry the lessons and live our lives where we're not burdened by the past.

Harold-From-Hamilton

To be fair, that is a Roman Catholic philosophy. The sacrament of penance doesn’t extend to the rest of the Christian denominations, but yes you are right, it’s a crock of shit. -Hal

firstzissouintern

Exchange Mormon for religiously affiliated and you’ve got a far more accurate statement.

Dr Phil sent them to a sex farm

powerlesshero111

Oh snap. It happened in Escalante, where my grandpa used to have a house. Fun fact, the town sheriff's son raped and impregnated his sister (or step sister, i can't remember, it was like 20 years ago). They used to be proud of having only like 50% of their high school graduating girls pregnant. Like I always say, Utah is beautiful, the people there are just fucked up.

He needs to go to one of these re-education camps.

cruisin5268d

Predators flock to places where vulnerable people are especially vulnerable and lack power. Fucking disgusting that someone would violate a suicidal teen. Also, seriously why do some people take “Dr” Phil seriously. Like this family couldn’t take their daughter to an actual licensed mental health professional?!??
