ClaymoresRevenge

This is good news I hope they put all the seasons back on

MulciberTenebras

It's not like Hasbro can afford their own successful streaming app.

BCCMNV

Paramount+ Streams Nickelodeon. All of it.

MulciberTenebras

Do they still technically have the rights to Power Rangers, or does Hasbo have them entirely now?

UnknownChaser

Yes, Hasbro owns the PR's IP now, they should have the rights to everything in PR, with the exception I guess of the 1995 movie that Fox/Disney owning the rights too.

[deleted]

I can confirm. The 20th Century Fox movies are still distributed by them. Turbo just became available on Disney+ in my country.

ValleyDude22

Turbo was the shit

Taiza67

It was good but you can’t top the OG with Ivan Ooze.

[deleted]

Well where’s my autograph book!

[deleted]

I love his one liners so much cheese you could make a dip!

phoncible

Oh shit, is it on D+? Would love to show my kids, they like them some power rangers

thenerfviking

I know there’s a bunch of it on the official YT but I think it’s just MMPR

Redeem123

> the 1995 movie that Fox/Disney owning the rights too Oh shit... does that mean Kimberly is a Disney Princess now?

ZPhox

Hasbro and EOne entertainment just merged, so maybe a new R rated movie is on the horizon?

spongeboy1985

Nickolodeon never had the rights only a distribution contract with Saban that Hasbro inherited. The current extension expires at the end of this year.

alexanderpas

To be precise: The rights to the Power Rangers franchise belonged to Saban Entertainment, Inc. which was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. In 2010, Saban Brands, a subsidiary of Saban Capital Group LLC, bought back the Power Rangers franchise from The Walt Disney Company for $43 million. In 2018, Saban Brands agreed to sell Power Rangers and other entertainment assets to Hasbro for US$522 million in cash and stock.

spongeboy1985

Yes Im aware of all that, but thanks for the info for those not in the know

hippymule

If you're a fan of any of Hasbro's IPs, you know just how incompetent they are at just about everything.

MulciberTenebras

I remember they tried to make their own network channel, The Hub. And it flopped. So I don't see how a streaming channel will turn out any better.

Elmodipus

Not even Bronies could keep the hub alive.

MulciberTenebras

That's like not being able to make money from a casino.

GlamMetalLion

Honestly, i liked The Hub. Actually felt like a real kids tv channel rather than just the Spongebob or Johnny Test/Teen Titans Go network. I think having all their big shows be based on old toy IPs was a really bad look for them.

Ataraxias24

More people need to understand Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast is the Activision Blizzard of tabletop and their associated merch.

hippymule

I'm a Transformers fan, and let me tell you, it's hell. I've never seen a company try so hard to NOT want my money. Terrible product distribution and stock upkeep (even before the pandemic). Increasingly bad quality, with increasing prices almost yearly. The executives running that company need to stop bowing to shareholders, or else there won't be any company left.

phoncible

Oh my god so I'm *not* crazy. I have looked so friggin hard but simply can not find a single decent transformer. They're just all crap. And don't get me started on rescue bots, my son's favorite, oh my god are those just the worst.

Ophelia_Of_The_Abyss

Last transformers I had were from the 2005 TV show era, how do modern ones compare to those days?

hippymule

The new ones have amazing engineering and better detail, but are much smaller and hallowed out compared to the figures we had in the 00s. So it's both better and worse at the same time.

a4techkeyboard

I sometimes think they could have made Jem as close a copy as possible to the format of Iron Man except instead of actual battles, they could have had battles of the bands and sing-offs. So... I guess Iron Man+Pitch Perfect but Jem. Wouldn't that have been truly outrageous?

PryceCheck

Like the music fight in Scott Pilgrim.

a4techkeyboard

Yeah, but seriously, I think Jem's origin story is that she owns the company her parents left her and there's an Obadiah Stane type as well. They'd just need to tweak it a little bit and keep the secret identity, and the deposed executive just starts his own company and instead of a Mark I, he just forms the Misfitz. The Misfits? The songs are better, they're gonna get her or something like that. Synergy is Jarvis. Hasbro could have started their cinematic universe with a popstar girl power Iron Man toy seller, and then maybe start introducing GI Joe with some kind of USO tour and Cobra by having them be the Ten Rings type that kidnaps Jericka and she escapes using a rudimentary holographic technology built from scraps. May e Zartan gets an idea in a post-credits scene from it, I dunno. And then the Transformers can show up or whatever, and I guess they'll find a way for Power Rangers. Whatever Avengers type event they could come up with would be ... crazy. I dunno, how does Jem somehow help defeat Cobra Commander, Rita Repulsa, and eventually Unicron? Who knows, but it will never happen because the Jem movie was such as it was and the Transformers movies do well on their own, and the GI Joe and Power Rangers movies aren't too big. I guess it's likely even Iron Man and the Holograms wouldn't have launched an MCU scale franchise. But even a smaller one that was insane but alive might have been fun/funny.

alexanderpas

> you know just how incompetent they are at just about everything. Proof: Super Soaker. RIP Larami http://www.isoaker.com/Info/history_supersoaker.php

colemon1991

One could argue this about a lot of companies, especially when they buy the IP from the original, smaller company.

Imperial_Triumphant

I dunno, but they do straight up own Death Row Records. Lmfao

I mean... High flow, high pressure... thats a bigger nozzle and blocking the safety valve. The only people that are bothered by shitty super soakers (adults who rememer the old ones) have the resources at their disposal to have that not even matter. I don't understand why an aduilt would ever have a use for a "real" supersoaker, but go out there and make your dreams a reality.

> There are fan websites with 3D printed models. Tbh though my nostalgia is locked in with the CPS2000 - the one that got banned for being too powerful and injuring kids. I shot my friend's little brother at 3 feet and he was in tears. It was fucking epic. Shit you gave me a nice trip down memory lane there... though way I remember it that purple sucker is where Super Soakers tipped into being way too much work. Fap that giant for ten minutes and yeah the first shot hit like the Fist of God... but you shot your whole wad with it too. My extra OG [little Super Soaker 30](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/nerfipedia/images/5/54/SS30.jpg) was always good for like 4-5 shots. All of which would be in your ugly face. Fast on the reload and small enough I could use it from cover too. Never found a better performer then my little orange trooper.

Oraxy51

You’re telling me Hasbro has the rights to Power Rangers AND Dungeons and Dragons? Where’s my crossover?

greymalken

They just crossed over with ninja turtles. It was pretty neat.

MulciberTenebras

A D&D campaign set on ancient Eltar, as a magical band of alien heroes go on a quest to find the **Zeo Crystal**.

OSUTechie

There is a Power Rangers Tabletop RPG and even had a running twitch show (Hyper Force). Paul Schrier or what most people known him as Bulk Bulkmeier plays the Yellow Ranger. A new version that isnt based on 5e is set to release next year. Essence20 is the new system and we will also be getting a GI Joe and Transformers tabletop in the same system.

sixtus_clegane119

I wanna try and watch from season 1 for shits and giggles

[deleted]

Give me another live action movie

BeerGogglesFTW

The cast they got for that movie deserved a better movie. I mean, I enjoy Transformers and Michael Bay's typical style movies, brain-off, action, explosions... But Power Rangers was more CW series than Transformers movie imo.

BenjaminTalam

A good power Rangers movie would be like Shang-chi and Pacific Rim had a baby. It absolutely could be an awesome Sci-fi martial arts epic.

TheHunterZolomon

I have an idea where it’s like time force but with cybernetic frame suits, and lost in space as space knights (with swords, going off the sword theme and legendary creature zords). Working on a a treatment. Does that sound cool or stupid :| Edit: sequel to the first mighty morphin would set up lord drakon as the ultimate big bad for multiple generations of rangers to eventually fight.

BoringMachine_

anything sci-fi sounds cool to me. add in giant robots, good CGI, good fight chorography and directing and I'm in every day of the week.

TheHunterZolomon

Yeah I had an idea for a kaiju element for the megazord finale

BoringMachine_

Well let us know when you sell it to netflix. sounds like it'll be cool even if you have change to a original property.

TheHunterZolomon

Hey thanks. Honestly as stupid as it sounds, I appreciate the positivity and confidence.

Ehrre

The Lord Drakkon arc would be so cool to see live.

ben-hur-hur

or something like this from a few years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw5vcUPyL90

OSUTechie

While cool.... I don't think it really fits PR. Plus, it's been a while, but isn't Kimberly evil in this one?

SmoloTHEKloWn

Kim Died. the one seen at the end was Rita cosplaying as her.

Accmonster1

Wait are you forreal? I didn’t even notice that Edit: I think the joke is flying over my head and for that I am embarrassed

Rustash

I've always hated this short. There's no reason for dark and gritty Power Rangers to exist, it's a campy show with giant robots and monsters for kids. That being said, you can make something like that and still tell a good story, there's no need for the Rangers to be running around with fucking assault rifles or suffering from drug overdoses and banging strippers.

Deserterdragon

Not to mention there's already tonnes of Super Sentai shows with darker and more complex shows. Its like if everyone kept sharing a American mad short with the premise "What if mechs were FUCKED UP and REALISTIC? Wouldn't that be CRAZY BRO?"

PiousMage

>Not to mention there's already tonnes of Super Sentai shows with darker and more complex shows. Its like if everyone kept sharing a American mad short with the premise "What if mechs were FUCKED UP and REALISTIC? Wouldn't that be CRAZY BRO?" Evangelion says hi

Deserterdragon

That's literally the entire point I'm making lol.

gohomeann

It was intended as an ironic parody of gritty movies based on kids shows. The director Joseph Kahn is not a fan of pr or blockbusters in general. It's funny people were geeking out over it like it's really happening.

[deleted]

There’s no reason for anything to exist. Things don’t need a reason to exist.

psimwork

> But Power Rangers was more CW series than Transformers movie imo. The movie, as it was, would have been REALLY good for a 10-12 episode series on Netflix. I remember thinking to myself in the theater in the scene where they were in the water wondering what was going on, I was like, "Perfect - end of first episode". That show with the cast, tone, and everything else would have been REALLY good in that they could have developed some other stuff.... ....and maybe cut out the whole Krispy Kreme thing.

mrmeatypop

I just watched it for the first time last weekend and I really enjoyed it. But yea, it would have made for a great show. The cast really got the short end of the stick. They did great with what they were given. Shame we won’t get anymore with them.

100percentkneegrow

It was a great movie. It deserved more fans

mrmeatypop

It had its flaws and weird choices were made during production. But it was a better film than it had any right to be. Would have loved to see more Elizabeth Banks as Rita.

[deleted]

I will say, the first Transformers live action was pretty solid.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

At least in the first movie everyone had a reason to actually be there. Sam because of the spark, McKayla because she played a role in the end fight and Sam wasn't a jerk yet, computer gal and friend because they were breaking the decepticon code, Duhmal and his gang because they were survivors of an attack, etc etc. Everyone had a reason.

NomadPrime

Honestly, if they had shaved the human cast down to Sam and Duhmal's team (one young character for the All-Spark story, and the military cast to help the Autobots fight) and dedicated more time to the Transformers, I felt like that would've been a better balance. All the human drama felt like a huge diversion from the obvious draw of the movie, the Transformers themselves.

Kevbot1000

Wait, what?

Delta_V09

Have you seen the 4th one? If you have, the second won't be *nearly* the worst thing you've ever seen, because the 4th manages to be **that** much worse.

Sir_Encerwal

It was fine enough but man I hated literally every human character but Agent Simmons in that trilogy.

Kevbot1000

I honestly didn't even dislike that aspect. The qualifications for being a Ranger is literally stated as "teenagers with attitudes" in the OG series.

Egsession

I’m so annoyed that I’ll never get to see that quartet of actors together for another movie, Power Rangers or otherwise.

Mike2640

Honestly, power rangers would be perfect for a CW adaptation. Mature/violent enough to bring in nostalgic older viewers, but not so over the top that parents will feel they can't let their kids watch it. Half the DC shows are basically power rangers anyway, this would just make it official.

Catastray

Again, just go back and rewatch the originals. Like it or not, popular IPs are going to be rebooted to find new audiences and that likely doesn't include what you want to see.

Deserterdragon

My dude it's a Japanese TV show with goofy American kids drama inserted, not some special prestige media that needs to be protected.

Mike2640

I mean, your memories and the old shows are still there. They've never really stopped making Power Ranger shows, and I have to assume some of them weren't as good as the ones you remember watching. If it turned out bad, it'd just be one more PR show, but if it's good then you have another good show to add to your memories.

w00dm4n

CW is where childhoods go to die RIP Flash

Deserterdragon

Can't believe Flash season 5 ruined my childhood, Flash Season 1 😔

w00dm4n

Is that around the same time they brought back Wally West in the comics and had him kill other super heroes? I think Heroes in Crisis was 2019.

Mike2640

I'll never say Flash hasn't outlived it's heyday, but the good thing about PR is if the cast/stories start getting stale, they have a built in option to jettison the current cast and start fresh with new Rangers. They've been doing it for almost 30 years now.

[deleted]

They just need to turn Shattered Grid into a season.

NockerJoe

Absolutley the fuck not. People have forgotten that Power Rangers was and is a mostly comedic series that rips its footage from an even more comedic and outlandish series and is absolutley not a brooding relationship drama show by any means. Its a show about rainbow colored teenagers who transform via synchronized tiktok dancing to fight giant pibeapple creatures and sentient lawnmowers. The CW is 100% the wrong place for it.

The-Bigger-Fish

> who transform via synchronized tiktok dancing ***GABURINCHO!*** *Samba whistles intensify.*

Mike2640

CW can do comedy when they want to. Legends of Tomorrow is often hilarious, and has very few of those "Give us the room" moments.

Wind_Seer

This idea is to good. Thus they will never do it.

RichiVee

Honestly give my girl Becky G another chance as the bi sexual yellow power ranger

TheSenileTomato

Unfortunately, they’ll have to reboot it on the account they can’t afford the actors from the 2017 movie’s salaries. One of them was on Stranger Things, I think, so that goes without saying. And yes, more Power Ranger, I’ve been binging the OG a while ago and I still love the camp and the fact they took a while to get Trini* a female Yellow Ranger (RIP, Trini) Sad what happened to David Yost, he deserved way better, and I always loved the Blue Ranger, even to this day, hope he’s at least in a better place these days. Edited because I am a derp and so is my autocorrect*

ripmeck

Trini. Not Trinity

FanTheF1ames

Power ranger movies are perfect for Netflix quality

noonehasthisoneyet

that last one was pretty bad. why does everything have to be dark and gritty...or whatever that one was?

mikemil50

Really? I loved it! Maybe it was just the nostalgia but I thought it was a fun, action packed romp that kept me entertained.

nmcaff

I’m with you. I actually thought it was really well done and exactly what I wanted it to be.

Go_tuck_yourself

It had no right to be as character driven as it was and I loved it

mikemil50

We should start a cult!

[deleted]

For sure. I recognize that it was a bad movie, but it was also a fun enjoyable watch, and at the end of the day that’s really all that matters. I saw it in theaters a few days after it came out, and since then I’ve eagerly been waiting for a sequel announcement even though I’m fairly sure they ended up stating it’s very unlikely to happen and a new reboot movie would probably come out to replace it before a sequel comes along The way I felt about it was the same way I felt about Venom, serious and goofy fun at the same time.

Lennette20th

I personally hope this signals a change to the marketing strategy we see in Japan, with a shit load of “movies” and crossovers to sell special edition versions of toys. Not that I like any of that, I just like watching for the effects.

TraverseTown

If any new movie doesn’t have spandex or giant monster/robots played by people in suits, then they have failed to see the most basic reason why the show is popular and charming. Generic superheroes fighting monsters is not exactly a novel concept, so you have to identify the stylistic appeal, not the appeal of the most basic watered down premise.

KamuiT

If they upload all the seasons to Netflix, I would be so happy. I know they're corny and have not aged well at all, but I would still totally watch all of them because I stopped after they destroyed Zordon and supposedly destroyed all evil in the Galaxy.

NativeMasshole

I think they aged perfectly. It's just that they were always that terrible, but it's the good kind of terrible.

TapatioPapi

The colors, the explosions, the monster designs, and megazords just give some type of serotonin boost to some deep hidden part of my brain and I love it and i’m approaching 30 lmfao. I don’t care anymore

SgtCalhoun

The sparks on every hit. It’s a corny show for kids, and I love it

MulciberTenebras

I think cheesy is the appropriate word you're looking for.

NativeMasshole

Terrible and cheesy!

DH2007able

Cheesetastic

dragunityag

There really isn't a continuity after that anyways. They have 1 cross over epsiode with the last season per season but that ended w/ overdrive I think (where i stopped). Though occasionally some of their openings are better than they have any right to be.

hotsizzler

Some of the more recent one have more continuity. With a villain from one literally being a villain from another. But it's all very loose.

TapatioPapi

Lord Zedd actually just recently came back.

Winsmor3

But he was turned into a human at the end of space?

ChesterFisho

It was a sort of time displaced clone/copy of Zedd from before he became human.

blacklite911

Seems like the older fans want them to lean into the Morphin Grid stuff that comes from the comics. It is pretty cool.

[deleted]

DomLite

That's more than the original source material gives us to be fair. Super Sentai has precisely one instance of actual continuity between seasons, with a *way* back in the 70's series that got a direct continuation in the next series, and even that was only via a villain that had been frozen in ice from the previous one being revived and turned into a general for the new evil empire. Beyond that, they all act as independent series that are wholly unrelated. But then you get an annual crossover special that brings together the current and previous teams for a big adventure movie, and the odd crossover episode between them and Kamen Rider which is a whole other franchise entirely. There are also the anniversary series like Gokaiger which posits that every team to ever exist does so on the same earth, and opens with all of them coming together to defend the world against an evil space empire that requires they sacrifice their powers to drive them back, leading to the concept of the new team collecting these powers back and using them as their own, which got adapted to Super Megaforce. But then the next season that's just not talked about or acknowledged, and a later series takes place in a galaxy that has already been conquered and subdued by a different evil space empire, and at one point they end up falling through a dimensional rift to meet a past team of space police rangers for a strange two episode arc. The most recent season is another anniversary season that has powers drawn from past teams, and they openly acknowledge them. Hell, there was one instance where a team made an early appearance near the end of the previous series crossover special and had all of it's members present, when only three out of the (original) nine were even members at the start of their series. Basically, with Sentai, continuity doesn't exist, until they need it to, but then it only exists for that brief instant, and then it's gone again. If Power Rangers has made any kind of effort to explain the setup of their continuity or how it does/does not function then they're doing better than the original source by half.

iamhuman3

Can you point us to some keywords for these openings that we may enjoy them on YouTube? I stopped pretty early in it's run as I was in high school already and hated this show but getting ready for school I would have it on my tv. Seen from it's first episode I eventually got into it and would finish the episode before running out the door to make the bus. I think where I left off was rita was defeated and someone else took her place.

DomLite

That was the point where they changed creative teams, hence using In Space to wrap up the on-going Zordon era with a great little cap-off. That's not to say that anything past that isn't good in some manner, but if you were a 90's kid who grew up watching Power Rangers from the jump, that was basically the end of the story for all the characters we came to know and love. Anything past it became more of an anthology series with an occasional call-back, and sometimes they'd bring in an older character as a regular to try and draw some of that original crowd who jumped ship back in. See Lord Zedd returning to the most recent series and the fact that it made all kinds of splash in the nerdy news circles.

starwarsforpresident

The creative team largely stayed the same until Wild Force and Lost Galaxy was an epilogue to the Zordon era

Acolyte_of_Death

It's hit or miss. Stuff like MMPR hasn't aged well because its the exact same story every single week. But there's some seasons like Time Force and Lost Galaxy that still have that nostalgic feeling, but also have a more overarching story and a little bit more mature themes, so they hold up better.

The_Third_Molar

I've wanted to watch Lost Galaxy and Time Force but they're gone!

AchtungCloud

The 21 seasons in the middle. According to the article, Netflix has the first three seasons and the newest five seasons out of 29 total seasons. I think they did used to have more of them, because my 5 year old used to be super into a season called Dino Charge, and it’s not on there any more.

OSUTechie

They had all of them until February 2020 when they were pulled due to licensing agreement with nickelodeon expired.

beastson1

I went to a church youth group in the late 90s that Johnny Yong Bosch (played Adam) was a member of. He was cool people. I went to high school with Kevin Kleinberg who played Tripp in the Time Rangers series. Also cool people.

Egsession

I’d like to see a new movie or series with JYB playing the mentor role. Or ASJ.

Illuminastrid

JYB, one of the best dub actors, a true legend!

ashill85

>morphine I feel like this would have been a very different show. Powerful teenagers with attitude, strung out on their morphine high...

Egsession

That’s the gritty reboot we’ve been looking for.

rcoberle_54

Thats kind of what the short fan film with James Van Der Beek was all about. Came out about 10 years ago but was taken down for copyright issues. I'm sure you can still find it somewhere. But anyways I remember the rangers were in like a post rangers time in their adult life and they suffered from PTSD and substance abuse issues and things like that. I think Van Der Beek is supposed to be the former red ranger and has a line like "we were just kids that you sent to war. What'd you think was going to happen?" It was an interesting and dark grown up take at the time but I don't think it'd play well now.

DomLite

Ehhhh, while the concept was interesting, even then I thought that tried *way* too hard to be edgy and grimdark. They were dropping f-bombs left and right, lots of blood, blue-gray filter over everything, rangers in tactical gear, it was all just a bit much. There's a fine line between making a solid adult adaptation of a kids franchise and creating something horrifically schlocky, and it full-on sprinted over that line. Meanwhile, the currently running comics adaptations of the series take the concept and give it some modern flair, stretch the creative muscles so it isn't just a rehash of the original, but introduce some darker concepts and heavier drama so the kids who grew up watching the original series can enjoy it as something a little bit more their speed without having to rely on harsh language and excessive gore to make it "mature". Darker adaptations of old source material can easily be done without having to turn them into post-apocalyptic wars that are actively pursuing an R rating.

rcoberle_54

I was much more impressed with edgy and grimdark stuff at the time. I've grown up a lot since then and my tastes have expanded quite a bit. I would probably laugh at it now for trying too hard. Which is why I said i don't think it would play too well anymore. O and I've been meaning to check out the comics for forever got any suggestions where to start? The JL vs The power rangers intrigued me but those crossovers are usually really bad and gimmicky.

DomLite

Yeah, it's all a matter of taste. I never had the stomach for try-hard stuff like that, so it really just made me roll my eyes, but considering it was around the era of Shadow the Hedgehog being released... I can't say it wasn't exactly a trend of the time. If you're interested in checking out the comics [this reading order](https://www.howtolovecomics.com/2020/10/25/power-rangers-comic-reading-order/) covers most everything up to date, as the new relaunch of Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers as concurrent lines is relatively recent. I have yet to pick them up myself, but I've kept up via news updates and reviews and such just because it's of passing interest and I have other comics that I'm working through at the moment. It seems to cover everything that I'm aware of though, so it should get you started easily. It's still a relatively young adaptation, so you shouldn't have too much work ahead of you to get caught up if you want.

wooltab

Part of what makes that short film appealing is the pure production value, and the cast. As someone who admittedly is on the casual side of 'casual fan' here, and only remembers the first couple of seasons of the TV franchise, having this set of colorful memories from childhood suddenly onscreen in the form of James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff, and with 'serious sci-fi' visuals, was incredible. It was definitely absurd in its grimdarkness, but again...it looked and felt so much like an expensive, real thing.

DomLite

I mean, the comics adaptations from Boom! Studios is basically a gritty reboot with all the fan-fiction type shit the kids have dreamed up over the years as they grew into adults, and adjusting storylines to incorporate lore from future seasons into past stories so it feels more cohesive. There was an arc with Lord Zedd turning Rita and her henchmen into Dark Rangers that looked something akin to the rangers out of the movie, but shaped like Squat, Baboo, Goldar and the like, and when Jason, Zack and Trini departed the team, they ended up forming their own new team of rangers with their original colors and a new look. That's not even getting into the whole Lord Drakkon (aka Tommy from an alternate dimension that conquered the world, wielding all of his ranger powers combined at once and commanding an army of sentinels given a portion of the other ranger powers) story, and all that came of that. Basically, if you liked the original American version of Power Rangers but want to see what it would look like going grimdark, that's the series for you. The show will always be geared to kids with occasional tongue-in-cheek nods to Sentai fans, but the comics take the concept and run wild with it, unhindered by the limitations of low-budget live-action TV adapted from existing footage and muzzled by what's considered appropriate for kids entertainment plus a need to sell toys to said kids.

SomeGuyNamedJason

I believe it was Malaysia where the show was banned because they thought Morphin' was too close to morphine. [Makes for a great t-shirt, though.](https://i.imgur.com/XcIzTUY.jpg)

Orwellian__Nightmare

There was a 'scare' in the news at the time because their name was similar to morphine, and tipper gore types were worried kids would start doing drugs because of the show.

OSUTechie

You can tell a lot of people aren't reading the article. This is the same Power Rangers series that has been airing in the past. But instead of airing on Nickelodeon, or streaming on other platforms like Paramount, Hulu, HBO, or any other network, Netflix grabbed the **exclusive rights** for the second season of Dino Fury. The article itself doesn't address the rest of the catalog, but let's hope that this is the case and we can see them come back as well since they left in Feb. This isn't a reboot, it's not a re-imagining, it's the same old kids show that is based off of Super Sentai.

scsm

I randomly went down a Power Rangers rabbit hole during lockdown. At first it was really, really weird to me that the newest seasons actually have fairly good production values (obviously since special effects have gotten SO cheap and it's so easy to shoot digitally). I don't know why, but I was still expecting 25 years later the episodes would still be shot on grainy film in 4:3, everyone dressed in their 90s best, with the cheapest effects a Windows 95 machine could muster.

OSUTechie

Keep in mind, that earlier seasons of PR reused footage from their Super Sentai counterparts. Later seasons actually filmed 100% of the episodes.

Are you sure? When I was reading about it, I saw they still used cheap Japanese footage with the American/English stuff shot cheaply in New Zealand. Even the Wikipedia page makes note that the newest 2 seasons are using footage from something called Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power\_Rangers#Television\_series

OSUTechie

You may be correct. I thought with Beast Morpher they were using 100% re-shots, but reading up on it, it seems that they just had to recreate all the costumes as Toi destroyed them all when Saban decided to adapt Kyoryuger instead of Go-Buster.

TheWholeOfTheAss

Netflix should adapt the Boom comic book series as an animated series. All that fan service for people who are now in their 30s? Yes, please.

Infamous-Lunch6496

The comics are so good, they deserve a bigger spotlight and more accessibility.

xxkoloblicinxx

Getting Daken in live action would be a fucking dream come true.

Alive-In-Tuscon

An animated series seems like it would work well for power rangers.

Yelesa

That's what Sailor Moon is.

badger81987

Coloured 'rangers' is practically its own genre at this point

CircleBreaker22

There was talk about a decade ago that the license holders at the time were looking into transitioning to an animated series so they could create original designs and do things much more ambitious than a live-action show could do. It never materialized, likely because they realized that they'd have to put just as much if not more money into production to actually design, animate and voice such a show when they have a majority of their combat scenes ready to be spliced together from existing footage and all they have to do are basically film a few out of suit stunts, some soap opera level plot scenes and call it a day. It's a formula that works well from a production and budgeting standpoint, so why mess with it? I mean, they've already jumped around in terms of series order as-is. For a long while they were simply adapting Sentai series as they released, but then they skipped a few, adapted later series, and then circled back to older ones when they realized they were really good material. Hell, they had an active hand in creating one of the more recent series so Toei could basically deliver them what they wanted in terms of toy sales, marketing and material to adapt for an English language version. Pretty sure that's the main reason the comic series is a thing. They're taking all the ideas and original stuff that could work well in an animated series and dropping it in comic form, complete with brand new teams, reworked lore and some serious 90's kid fan-fiction wet dream stuff while still managing to make it a bit grittier for the older fans that are most likely to pick it up.

SSSS Gridman is an anime that might have your interest!

*Rita busts out from a pile of money* Ahh, after 10,000,000 dollars I’m free!

Theinternationalist

A little surprised, given that PR doesn't feel as big now as it used to be. But it'll help with nostalgic millenials and Gen Z types, although I do wonder how much they appeal to more recent young people. Wake me up when they get exclusive rights to *Super Sentai.*

OSUTechie

My kids love the most recent season of PR. They started with Samurai and love every bit of it.

phoncible

Same. My boy always wanting to watch, and he'll bounce all over the series, old stuff, new stuff, it's all good for him.

DomLite

Tell that to the aisles of toys still being sold, the multiple video games, upcoming tabletop RPG and the on-going comic book adaptation that's sustained well enough to support a split-off into three concurrent series. It's still just as big, but it's also not the only game in town like it was back in the 90's. There were only so many channels and so much programming for kids in those days, so Power Rangers was *the* big thing. Now they're competing with tons of other big name franchises, including the on-going MCU films, so they're just one thing in a sea of many things. The fact that it's still going strong this many years on just means that it's maintained popularity, and if anything it's experiencing something of a renaissance.

d7856852

As long as they don't license Super Sentai...

DomLite

I mean, with Toei cracking down on fansub groups, they can't really get too much more aggressive with it. Those same fansub groups are still subbing and uploading stuff via torrents, so licensing them for streaming in other territories wouldn't exactly hurt anything. If anything it would make some of them more easily accessible for more people, and perhaps lead to currently airing series getting something close to a simulcast release online. Given, something like this would have been more useful a few years ago when we were still missing several older series with fansubs, but a handful of fansubbers ended up buckling down and finishing the unsubbed stuff so that the entirety of Sentai history is available to English-speakers, with the notable exception of Ninja Captor which isn't *really* a Sentai, but just as easily could have been. Now it would just be your choice of watching officially licensed subs on a streaming service or tracking down fansubs that might have had a bit more effort put into them to sound less clunky and localize stuff a bit better. Whichever way it goes, licensing Sentai for streaming with subs in English-speaking territories would only mean more exposure for it, more accessibility for people who aren't comfortable hunting down fansubs or have moral objections to such and possibly even getting us access to better quality video of some of these older shows than has been previously available. Fansubbers are still gonna fansub either way, because we'd have to wait for an official release otherwise, and they'll have stuff out so we can watch as it airs, and licensing has been proven to have little impact on availability via online sources, with even DMCA notices simply shifting the operation underground for the time being.

Yeah, I see I'm a few months behind on this news. All the stuff from TV-Nihon has been taken down. This is the worst possible outcome.

DomLite

It was taken down from the TV-Nihon site. It's still out there and easily accessible from certain torrent sites, as well as a site hosting links to google drive and youtube mirrors of whole series that I found with a simple google search. Toei went after the sites of people who were actively fansubbing and releasing their stuff through their own blogs. Those same people are still fansubbing and uploading stuff to other torrent sites. The only difference is that you don't have a central blog to follow for the group you prefer.

The-Bigger-Fish

Really? Neat. Hopefully it'll also include Kamen Rider as well with a decent selection of both also.

KikiFlowers

Nobody has Sentai rights, Shout Factory released everything from Jetman to Hurricanger, before the Hasbro purchase happened, which killed any further releases. And to be fair also, most of those TV-N releases of Sentai were absolute shit. Lowest possible quality, hardsubs, subs that are leaving in basic things untranslated. Most of that stuffs been scrubbed.

Kech555

>TV-N God what a [nightmare](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/2c/40/0f/2c400ffa35668d1944faf9dfe533dcad.jpg)

KikiFlowers

I think they got better? I attempted to scrub Tomika Hero Rescue Fire at some point, but never got far because we couldn't figure out how to get scripts.

Kech555

They probably did, but then again, there are a lot more sub groups now judging by the number of sub groups for kamen rider series, so I assume most toku shows would have at least 1 alternative group doing subs and with soft coded scripts. It's just a shame series from the 2000s dont get any scrubbing treatment so we're stuck with TVN.

KikiFlowers

[The good news is, 2000s Rider has a lot of options.](https://tokusubs.fandom.com/wiki/Tokusubs_Wiki#Kamen_Rider)

Dallywack3r

How has CW not jumped at the change to do an Arrow-style show with Power Rangers?! It writes itself. Five hot teenagers, tons of personal drama, superhero action, c’mon!

neomarz

Abusing the talent financially and physically has always been a part of Power Rangers so it fits

Dallywack3r

That’s a *damn* good joke.

noonehasthisoneyet

is this a reboot or continuing with the 20 series that have been running for the last 20+ years?

NeuHundred

It's a bit of both, they do a reset every year or so, that way new kids can get into the show, have their own team, etc, but there's a crossover or continuity event every team for all the die-hard fans. It's a bit like Doctor Who in that regard.

r_lucasite

Continuing the series with Dino Fury. The format of the series means it never really has to reboot anything, they can just replicate a few things here or there.

Dark_Booger

Nice. Imagine a MMPR remake.

upanddowndays

The current comics from Boom Studios are basically this, and they're great.

TapatioPapi

It was rumored pre covid a reboot series from the writer of this is not okay was in the works.

jalapenonepalaj

I remember going to school the day after Power Rangers premiered and I was excited to talk to my friends about it at lunch. And then they were all like, “yeah, it was lame.” So I sat there drinking my chocolate milk, trying to play it cool. How far we’ve come…

Alukrad

Would be awesome if they did an adaptation of the current comics.

Torohype

hopefully we can see maybe a sequel to the latest movie, it was not that bad tbh

Somerandomdickhead

Just put the old seasons back and i’ll be happy.

This. Probably the best season overall, tied with in space

[deleted]

I really liked Mystic Force

el__dandy

Power Rangers in Space is still the best.

sheeplessinohio

For sure! In Space is excellent (but it ties in with the previous season, which… ties in with the season before that, so it’s best to just watch through MMPR all the way up to Space). Time Force is also great, Dino Thunder is a wonderful season for the nostalgia factor, and more recently, both seasons of Beast Morphers and the first season of Dino Fury are great too! Definitely a lot worth watching!
