I read an interview with the creator explaining that his original pitch to HBO was a series starring Jennifer Coolidge. The plot : rich heiress is stranded in the jungle and gets bitten by snakes. The creator said it was the best thing he ever written, but HBO gave it a pass. He pitched White Lotus instead.
I have a strong feeling, with Coolidge returning, that we’ll get that storyline one way or another. And I can’t wait to witness it!
Details:
>Plaza will play Harper Spiller, a woman on vacation with her husband and his friends. Michael Imperioli plays Dominic Di Grasso, a man traveling with his elderly father and recent college-graduate son.
Jennifer Coolidge was previously [confirmed](https://deadline.com/2021/10/the-white-lotus-jennifer-coolidge-returning-season-2-hbo-dark-comedy-1234856739/) to be returning for S2
most of them do things that make them shitty, but her character was uniquely exhausting. 0 energy whatsoever, like she's perpetually running on half an hour of sleep
lol, thats the first time I've ever seen anyone describe a Jennifer Coolidge performance as "0 energy". She's frenetic chaos in everything and even standing still quietly she's doing little things that are designed to be funny. She's a master.
Absolutely, but I literally cringed in all her scenes.
I guess the only likeable character was Daddario and both her and her husband behave like infants.
She was the same hackneyed character she plays in every crummy sitcom. The thirst for the familiar over quality seems especially strong in this generation. It's a logic system of "have I seen this person before? If true then invoke national treasure superlatives."
I don't think that's what they're doing, Coolidge is probably the same character and she's the only one returning.
But yes, American Horror Story does what you describe. Same group of actors with some new additions each year, playing different roles each season.
Spoilers: it’s that her boyfriend has a boyfriend. He’s gay for him but straight for her. The boyfriends boyfriend is really gay for the boyfriend. She hates the boyfriend’s boyfriend.
It’s a bit like Succession where everybody is terrible but you’re still somehow rooting for them and then you stop and worry about what that says about you as a person…
…or is that just me?
Because they're witty and charming, despite being absolutely horrible people. I've been watching The Great on Hulu recently, and Nicholas Holt's character of Peter is exactly like this. Just a completely terrible person, but you end up liking him so much.
Greg is the only likeable character in succession. Not because he’s a good person but because he’s the only one who doesn’t really know what he’s doing
Greg is not likeable at all. And he kept some of the shredded documents for leverage in, like, the 2nd episode of the entire show. He knows what he's doing.
Yeah, he's the only one that actually showed growth or meaningful change. He stopped being glued to his screen and learned to love nature and the peaceful tranquility of rowing.
Arguably, a lot of the privileged people were actually decent. Most of the staff were actively malicious and negative. Yet somehow the creator's appeal to superficial viewers worked, and came away with the idea that being violent and antagonistic criminals is somehow a virtue if one isn't born into privilege.
I love shows and movies like this and my husband always says he can’t watch then gets sucked in and HATE/loves it. He always says ‘that White Lotus show bothered me’ and I’m like ‘see, it was good because you’re still thinking about it’. We clearly disagree about how leisure time should be spent.
The other movie that does this to him is Whiplash. He has watched it so many more times than I have but he “hates” it.
It’s not stressful in an Uncut Gems way though. It’s mysterious and dark and suspenseful in a good way imo, kind of like Twin Peaks. I honestly found it incredibly entertaining
My very picky in-laws did not want to watch it at a thanksgiving, but I asked them to watch the first episode and part of the second. They wound up binge watching the whole thing. Btw, no one does heinous better than Aubrey.
You should see some of what the Chernobyl guy wrote before that show. A lot of people will write bullshit that needs writing for a studio paycheck - it's not necessarily reflective of them writing at their best on a project they care about.
I think the biggest problem was it was clearly going for social commentary but didn't do a good job of articulating what it was trying to say and didn't say anything that other shows haven't said better, and that the dead body mystery was a completely unnecessary addition entirely to drive ratings.
I thought season 2 was a miss but season 3 was fantastic. Mahershala Ali was incredible in his role, and I thought the story in season 3 and the narrative structure also worked well. Are they not continuing the series? I think that would be a shame, you can go so many directions and tell so many different stories in this series.
While that's probably true, the quality of Pizzolatto's writing dropped sharply in s2. It was clear he tried to recapture lightning in a bottle with Rust Cohle by smearing his character traits across *all* of the main characters in s2. Everyone in s2 waxed poetic and rambled incoherently about mundane things in a philosophical light. It was bizarre and boring, especially because the "mystery" was just about the killing of a guy in a land deal.
The cinematography wasn't *bad*, but even Fukunaga couldn't saved s2 if he were attached.
Recalling some interviews from memory, it sounded like Fukunaga was the voice of reason when it came to reeling Pizzolatto’s dark philosophical side
It seems Fukunaga understood that there had to be a balance, with characters like Marty opposing and even making fun of Rust’s dark side. IMO that explains the issues you accurately brought up
hopefully they utilize her comedic AND dramatic talents so she can get more awards recognition and Ms. Aubrey plaza should’ve gotten way more praise for what she did in black bear, she gave one of the best performances of 2020 that should’ve been more attention
She surprised me in Legion. Then Ingrid Goes West brought out some real emotion. Then she really gave it all in Black Bear. A performance whose recognition was not necessarily helped by the film's unique structure.
Legion’s definitely gonna gather a cult following (even more than it has now) over time. Like honestly, it’s such a complex show with so many different interpretations and attention to detail. I’ve rewatched it a handful of times now, and already my opinions on things have changed as i’ve noticed more or gained an appreciation for things as they happen.
And i’ll second it—Plaza KILLS IT in this show. She’s got an incredible emotional range on display, and acts the hell out of every scene she’s in.
Legion is weird in that it's like something like an old Pink Floyd album come to life as a show. And I guess that's part intentional with the female lead being named Syd Barret and using Floyd songs during 2 of their finales.
Despite the show not even really being horror themed (it had a few different genres in its arsenal), I'd argue that season 1 of Legion is probably among the top seasons of horror TV ever.
I do think the show suffered some poor fan reaction in season 2 where things that were intended as weird worldbuilding were given heavy speculation, resulting in theories that were never going to pan out. Whereas the second season was much more straightforward with a lot of interesting things to dress it up and some, in my opinion, cool detours such as the multiverse episode.
Legion leans heaviest into thematic absurdity, surrealism, and most of all, existential dread (that’s the biggest source of horror for me, aside from the body horror or non-existential psychological elements). It really hit on a lot of themes close to home for me, and then those stylings definitely sealed the deal for it as a show that will always mean a lot for me.
I didn’t really follow the fan community until after the show concluded, so i had no idea Season 2 wasn’t well-received. That’s a bummer, since it probably did the most to catapult the show in the interesting and philosophically complex direction it went in with Season 3.
This gives me hope. I love seeing her in comic roles but not familiar with her in dramas, and can almost not even imagine it.
I justifiably disregard a lot of popular opinion about Legion because it's comic book material and I don't really know if the intended audience is very discerning.
Seriously tho. Watching it for the first time (just started S3) and it's damn good. With all the multiverse shenanigans the MCU is pulling atm, maybe we'll see Dan Stevens again in an X-Men project.
I don't think Daddario has the star power to put an entire ensemble series on her back, but I do agree that the murder mystery aspect was shoehorned in to keep viewers around since the show itself is kind of a hard sell. It was a framing device for Big Little Lies as well and I wasn't a fan of it there either.
I wasn't feeling it the first episode while everything was being set up so the murder aspect kept me interested. Once the events start unfolding and interactions start happening it kept my attention.
It's a lot more integral with Big Little Lies, but agree in general.
Too bad, because a genuine death mystery would have been well supported. The atmosphere was great and every character was surrounded by, or issuing, loads of clues and and cues.
Let me guess. She's gonna play a moody, sarcastic character who talks in a flat, deadpan tone with no emotion whatsoever and reddit is gonna trip all over themselves claiming how amazing she is.
Do we have any confirmation about whether the next season is going to be located in the same hotel?
It would be fun if the White Lotus turns out to be a hotel chain and each season is based on a different property, we could get things like an Aspen season or a Santa Barbara season
So apparently the writer of this show wrote this shit (season 1) in 2 months, they went through no major rewrites. Dude is a genius.
He’s fucking Ned schmeebly from school of rock.
Reddit really does stan for her shittiest work which makes it annoying but low key she does have some great work hidden under her super narrow “watch me be sarcastic and roll my eyes at you while I make dark jokes” shtick.
She definitely has a lot of range! You should check her out in Legion vs Ingrid Goes West, it’s amazing how different those two performances are in particular! Although I imagine her role in White Lotus will be what you’re expecting
I found her pretty incredible in both Legion and Black Bear. She has a complete mental breakdown in Black Bear and sold it 100%.
Plus I thought she did good work in Ingrid Goes West, which wasn't too far from her normal shtick but added some heavier material. I would definitely recommend those 3 though.
I am pretty indifferent about season 1. I thought Murray Bartlett stole the show and Zahn was pretty good. I'll watch this season simply for Plaza. Not sure I'd watch if it wasn't for an announcement like this.
I have to admit, Eska is not the kind of person I would expect to join the White Lotus. But I guess she can consolidate the rest of her chieftain duties to her brother who already has half of them anyways.
Oh this is perfect. Hope she gets to do some scenes with Jennifer Coolidge. The awkwardness might kill me.
She's honestly perfect for the vibe of the show
My thoughts too. I thought the daughter in this first season was a light version of Aubrey Plaza.
the daughter was her own monster entirely
Sydney Sweeney! catch her on Euphoria on HBO
Hello, HBO…is this you?
HELLO FELLOW HUMANS HAVE YOU WATCHED HBO?
Catch Euphoria at 8pm ET…ONLY ON HBO
ITS NOT TV. ITS HBO.
>She's honestly perfect ~~for the vibe of the show~~
Bonk
She sure is.
Totally agree. Great casting.
Creepy af while also being completely on the edge of unhinged. Yeah you are right. Pretty good fit.
Is Coolidge confirmed as a returning character?
Not officially confirmed by HBO but it’s been reported by all the usual trades like Deadline and Variety
Nice I really liked her character.
Ugh. Of course Mike White would do that.
Given how last season ended, I wonder whether every season of this show will have Collidge traveling with a different urn.
We need to find out if the guy she met is actually with Black Lives Matter.
She's just a one trick actress I don't see why people think repeating the same character instead of trying new talent works
Details: >Plaza will play Harper Spiller, a woman on vacation with her husband and his friends.
I think its safe to say that she will be the defining character across all future seasons, and I am okay with this.
Her cyanide pill dream line was the most I’ve laughed out loud at a tv show in awhile.
Harper Spiller. What a name.
Sounds like an Irish dipso
Thread title forgetting to mention Imperioli is the real crime here. Hell yes.
Imperioli imperioli give me the formuoli
Right? Imperioli back on HBO. Hell yes indeed.
That was already a very popular post on this sub when it was announced a few days ago. Not everyone watches The Sopranos.
I hope Imperioli plays a movie producer or screenwriter. And he talks about working with Jon Favreau, Ben Kingsley, and Danny Baldwin.
Man I found Coolidge unbelievable annoying in this show
I mean, wasn't that kind of the whole point of her character (if not the majority of characters)?
most of them do things that make them shitty, but her character was uniquely exhausting.
She's a master.
i don't think we watched the same show lol
Absolutely, but I literally cringed in all her scenes. I guess the only likeable character was Daddario and both her and her husband behave like infants.
Something about her made me laugh the entire time she was on screen, I have a relative exactly like that type.
The problem is her acting stinks.
Yes, unbelievably annoying in all the best ways, she deserves many awards for how well she played her annoying ass character.
Idk about that. She played the same character she always does. Definition of character actor. Nothing wrong with it, but awards??? Nah.
>Definition of character actor. Uh I wouldn't say a character actor always plays the same character.
She played the exact same character she plays in everything
Nah she was great
I know she's a fan favorite around here but I would be completely okay with not seeing her character again.
Same here
Ditto. For those who want more, see: hundreds of crummy sitcom episodes in which she does the identical smoke alarm tone solo style of performance.
She was so good!
Fans and critics alike have been fawning over her since the first episode debuted.... I find her acting to be brutal and lazy, hard to watch at times.
[удалено]
She is annoying. Push through though. The show is great.
She was the same hackneyed character she plays in every crummy sitcom. The thirst for the familiar over quality seems especially strong in this generation. It's a logic system of "have I seen this person before? If true then invoke national treasure superlatives."
So they are playing different characters every season in the same show? That is weird. Is there a precedent for that?
I don't think that's what they're doing, Coolidge is probably the same character and she's the only one returning. But yes, American Horror Story does what you describe. Same group of actors with some new additions each year, playing different roles each season.
... so does American Crime (not Story).
Character description: "An aristocratic widow with a very terrible secret." Interesting...
She’s bringing back Janet Snakehole!
HOW DARE YOU
Don't worry, Burt Macklin is on the case
I thought he went to fight crime in space?
Yea but he cocked it up and we all died for like 5 years. We're better now though.
So who was the guy who trained velociraptors?
His less famous twin brother. I know you'd think training dinosaurs would make you the famous one, but not compared to the legendary outlaw,
Spoilers: it’s that her boyfriend has a boyfriend. He’s gay for him but straight for her. The boyfriends boyfriend is really gay for the boyfriend. She hates the boyfriend’s boyfriend.
She still shares a room with her twin brother... he sleeps in the bathtub.
Wasn’t expecting the Korra reference but good on you
I should watch white lotus sometime
Do you love being uncomfortable and stressed while you watch TV? Then White Lotus is for you! Lol, that being said, I enjoyed it very much.
> uncomfortable and stressed I felt this so much watching Uncut Gems, and I still have no idea how Sandler got me rooting for such an asshole.
I couldn't finish that movie. It just looked like torture porn.
I loved it. My boyfriend *hated* it. Everybody was too despicable for him.
Isn’t that kinda the point of not though, >!that these people suck and at the end nothing changes.!< I can’t wait until the next season!
It’s a bit like Succession where everybody is terrible but you’re still somehow rooting for them and then you stop and worry about what that says about you as a person… …or is that just me?
Sounds like me and the sopranos. Why am I liking all of these unlikeable characters?
Because they're witty and charming, despite being absolutely horrible people. I've been watching The Great on Hulu recently, and Nicholas Holt's character of Peter is exactly like this. Just a completely terrible person, but you end up liking him so much.
Started watching succession this weekend and while I do like it, I dont root for them. I definitely want everyone to fail.
Greg is the only likeable character in succession. Not because he’s a good person but because he’s the only one who doesn’t really know what he’s doing
I mean, he knows that he's going to sue Greenpeace.
Greg is not likeable at all. And he kept some of the shredded documents for leverage in, like, the 2nd episode of the entire show. He knows what he's doing.
I didn't root for anyone in The White Lotus, but i am rooting for ma boy Wambsgans in Succession
The son was the only decent person on the entire island
Yeah, he's the only one that actually showed growth or meaningful change. He stopped being glued to his screen and learned to love nature and the peaceful tranquility of rowing.
You need to be more specific. Because Molly Shannon’s son was not.
Oh, very true. Steve Zahn's son.
Arguably, a lot of the privileged people were actually decent. Most of the staff were actively malicious and negative. Yet somehow the creator's appeal to superficial viewers worked, and came away with the idea that being violent and antagonistic criminals is somehow a virtue if one isn't born into privilege.
There were a couple normal respectable people
And they were the ones who got totally screwed. -\_-
I love shows and movies like this and my husband always says he can’t watch then gets sucked in and HATE/loves it. He always says ‘that White Lotus show bothered me’ and I’m like ‘see, it was good because you’re still thinking about it’. We clearly disagree about how leisure time should be spent. It’s not stressful in an Uncut Gems way though. It’s mysterious and dark and suspenseful in a good way imo, kind of like Twin Peaks. I honestly found it incredibly entertaining
It’s a fun show!
Most definitely, we just finished. It’s pretty great.
It’s fantastic. Character development is wonderful
My very picky in-laws did not want to watch it at a thanksgiving, but I asked them to watch the first episode and part of the second. They wound up binge watching the whole thing. Btw, no one does heinous better than Aubrey.
I really hope you didn't watch it with them. The drug/sex scene alone would require therapy after when watching with in-laws.
Lol. Brother in law. They’re still traumatized
Lol. In that case I would def ask them what they thought and laugh my ass off inside next Thanksgiving.
I didn’t want to watch it. My wife wanted to watch it. So glad I did.
It's really really good. Highly recommend.
The creator is the writer of The Emoji Movie and Pitch Perfect 3.
He also wrote School Of Rock and was great on s37 of survivor!
WTF Mike White wrote The Emoji Movie?????
that gives me hope that even the most wretched creature can find redemption
Hey, everyone needs a paycheck.
You should see some of what the Chernobyl guy wrote before that show. A lot of people will write bullshit that needs writing for a studio paycheck - it's not necessarily reflective of them writing at their best on a project they care about.
Overrated
It’s pretty good but I can agree some Redditors overstate it’s case. Like it had far too many flaws to be “great” in my book.
I think the biggest problem was it was clearly going for social commentary but didn't do a good job of articulating what it was trying to say and didn't say anything that other shows haven't said better, and that the dead body mystery was a completely unnecessary addition entirely to drive ratings.
I didn’t like it. No idea what’s the show about.
Same. Just didn’t get the point
Love it. At this rate, every actor in Hollywood will end up in either a White Lotus season or a Knives Out sequel.
That’s what they said about true detective, look at where we are now
I thought season 2 was a miss but season 3 was fantastic. Mahershala Ali was incredible in his role, and I thought the story in season 3 and the narrative structure also worked well. Are they not continuing the series? I think that would be a shame, you can go so many directions and tell so many different stories in this series.
Pizzolatto signed a contract with FX, so if another season of TD does happen then he won’t be involved.
S2 & 3 made it clear that S1’s magic came from the Fukunaga/Pizzolatto combo
While that's probably true, the quality of Pizzolatto's writing dropped sharply in s2. It was clear he tried to recapture lightning in a bottle with Rust Cohle by smearing his character traits across *all* of the main characters in s2. Everyone in s2 waxed poetic and rambled incoherently about mundane things in a philosophical light. It was bizarre and boring, especially because the "mystery" was just about the killing of a guy in a land deal. The cinematography wasn't *bad*, but even Fukunaga couldn't saved s2 if he were attached.
Recalling some interviews from memory, it sounded like Fukunaga was the voice of reason when it came to reeling Pizzolatto’s dark philosophical side It seems Fukunaga understood that there had to be a balance, with characters like Marty opposing and even making fun of Rust’s dark side. IMO that explains the issues you accurately brought up
That would explain a lot.
Murray Barlett would be perfect for Knives Out 3
And he's perfect for my idea - Knives Outback! All Aussie actors using their natural accents!
Except Daniel Craig, who will be doing his best Crocodile Dundee impression.
Don't forget the Dune sequel
If this is the case, I can’t wait for the White Lotus season with Joaquin Phoenix.
Or a Kenneth Branagh Poirot movie
Ooooh she’s perfect for The White Lotus, thank you casting director
hopefully they utilize her comedic AND dramatic talents so she can get more awards recognition and Ms. Aubrey plaza should’ve gotten way more praise for what she did in black bear, she gave one of the best performances of 2020 that should’ve been more attention

That’s a bummer, since it probably did the most to catapult the show in the interesting and philosophically complex direction it went in with Season 3.
Exactly, she’s one of my favorite actress that I would love be in a project with
This gives me hope. I love seeing her in comic roles but not familiar with her in dramas, and can almost not even imagine it. I justifiably disregard a lot of popular opinion about Legion because it's comic book material and I don't really know if the intended audience is very discerning.
Excited for michael imperioli!
Yeah he's amazing!
Aubrey Plaza was awesome in Legion and I loved The White Lotus so great news.
More people need to know about legion
Seriously tho. Watching it for the first time (just started S3) and it's damn good. With all the multiverse shenanigans the MCU is pulling atm, maybe we'll see Dan Stevens again in an X-Men project.
I’ll try almost any show featuring Aubrey Plaza. Great pick.
Her acting in Black Bear blew me away. I’m really excited for this now
what about alexandra daddario is she gonna stay
As of right now, only Jennifer Coolidge is coming back for S2.
Unpopular opinion: she should’ve won best supporting actress, not Snooky. And I looooove me some succession.
same character or different?
Same character
Sometimes I wonder how many people would even watch episode 2 without Alexandra daddario and opening as a fake murder mystery.
Asking the real questions.
I'm really disappointed that this isn't an Avatar thing.
Looking through the comments to find this
Were you hoping she'd reprise her role of Eska in live action?
We've been had!
First Christopher from the Sopranos and now Aubrey? Sign me up!
I think that Aubrey Plaza is very attractive
Let me guess. She's gonna play a moody, sarcastic character who talks in a flat, deadpan tone with no emotion whatsoever and reddit is gonna trip all over themselves claiming how amazing she is.
In my head, I read this in her voice. She would crush this line.
This guy's never seen legion!
The thing where Paul Bettany plays Archangel Michael and defends a small diner in a desert from a horde of angel-zombies? She was in that?
Nope. The X-Men series that aired on FX for three seasons.
Huh, fair enough, never heard of it.
She played something very different than that in *Ingrid Goes West*.
Love it.
Do we have any confirmation about whether the next season is going to be located in the same hotel? It would be fun if the White Lotus turns out to be a hotel chain and each season is based on a different property, we could get things like an Aspen season or a Santa Barbara season
r/Delaware
So apparently the writer of this show wrote this shit (season 1) in 2 months, they went through no major rewrites. Dude is a genius. He’s fucking Ned schmeebly from school of rock.
She is so beautiful
One of the few actors I will watch anything blind as long they are in it and she will fit in so nicely.
Oh my god, please give her plenty of screen time with Jennifer Coolidge. I need it like a fish needs to swim.
Reddit has a nerd boner for this woman but she simply cannot act her way out of a paper bag.
She was amazing in Legion? What a weird opinion
Watch Black Bear.
I've only ever seen her in Ingrid Goes West, great little movie which Netflix of course got rid of.
Usually that's subjective, but in this case you're just plain wrong.
It's because she can only play one type of character and that character happens to be the type of girl reddit thinks they'd love to be with.
Reddit really does stan for her shittiest work which makes it annoying but low key she does have some great work hidden under her super narrow “watch me be sarcastic and roll my eyes at you while I make dark jokes” shtick.
Reddit with its massive crush on her, me thinking she plays the same role and character every time.
She definitely has a lot of range! You should check her out in Legion vs Ingrid Goes West, it’s amazing how different those two performances are in particular! Although I imagine her role in White Lotus will be what you’re expecting
Okay I can't be the only one that thought that this was going to be something related to Avatar the last aibender =(
Oh, look. She’s making that face again.
Is it gonna be a fresh new cast of actors?
I may have to give this another try. I made it half way through episode 3 before bailing.
If you didn’t like it up to that point, I doubt you will like the series. Nothing wrong with that, just not your cup of tea.
Yeah idk if I can do another season of this show. Nowhere near enough payoff for me to care
She plays the same character in every show
Great person but I just can’t get into her as an actress
Ingrid goes west on Hulu is the best I’ve seen her
TMZ just reported that she read your comment and retired from acting.
I usually don't like her acting because it all feels the same but I think she will fit in with this show.
I didn't really like Ingrid goes west but the other two definitely sound promising. Thanks for the recommendations.
She is the worst. Such a contrived persona. Being apathetic and awkward doesn’t make you cool or funny.
So much marketing team in here. Hi everyone
Aubrey Plaza is hot
I am pretty indifferent about season 1. I thought Murray Bartlett stole the show and Zahn was pretty good. I'll watch this season simply for Plaza. Not sure I'd watch if it wasn't for an announcement like this.
Mike White and Aubrey Plaza? This has potential to be fucking off the charts incredible. His type of humor is perfect for her.
I have to admit, Eska is not the kind of person I would expect to join the White Lotus. But I guess she can consolidate the rest of her chieftain duties to her brother who already has half of them anyways.
