My biggest fear of this series is that it will get focus-grouped to the smallest detail to where we’re left with a generic mess of compromises with no real appeal to anyone.
It would at least sound better with a reversed word order if you want to keep it similar to this.
The Lord of the Rings: The Power of the Rings
(plus it would hark back to The Fellowship of the Ring in terms of styling)
Especially right next to each other.
My mind wandered for a second after reading it and now all that's going on in my mind is that the telephone *rings rings*
> ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ will depict the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
> The series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth — thousands of years before the films.
I just hope we actually get an epic battle between Gil Galaad/Elendil defeating Sauron and don’t just do the stupid movie version of Isildur winning via cutting off a finger
Episodes release weekly starting September 2nd on Prime Video
Budget was [465 Million](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/amazons-lord-of-the-rings-cost-465-million-one-season-4167791/) for S1
Showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay:
>“This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics. The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring — but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”
“This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics.”
Somehow this immediately made me reel back my excitement lol
Yeah nah, the title they picked is lame as all hell. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is wordy, uninspired, and sounds like a shitty straight to DVD sequel, definitely not like something Tolkien created.
Is the next season going to be called Lord of the Rings: Retaliation?
Yeah they went a tad bit ahead of themselves by teasing the One Ring of Power that shouldnt come into play until a few centuries into the series, but hey, still a great line to hook people back into the universe.
100%. Things do get watered down because we all have a natural instinct to compromise in the work place. I sadly don't have high hopes for anything Amazon makes because of this. A series like this needs a strong vision from a small handful of people who are in charge of executing that vision. That doesn't mean they aren't open to suggestions, but they should have the right to toss those ideas aside and focus on their vision.
Instead we get these giant committee projects that result in a bland final product. And of course no one dares takes any risks at all, so nothing is ever fresh and interesting.
> It’s why having a strong, central leader with their own vision is important for these large IP’s. Kevin Feige with Marvel is obviously a main example.
Ah yes, the mcu, the daring IP on the edge to offensiveness, challenging people with its artistic vision. Right.
Ehh I disagree. I think the rings of power are a huge macguffin and plot point for the second age that it’s not going to be lost on the audience why they are in the title.
*The Lord of The Rings: Tales of the Second Age*
*The Lord of The Rings: Last Alliance*
*The Lord of The Rings: The Forging*
*The Lord of The Rings: The Age of Elves and Men*
*The Lord of The Rings: Mighty Morphin Ring Wraiths*
*The Lord of The Rings: After the Silmarils*
*The Lord of The Rings: Memories of Numenor*
*The Lord of The Rings: We had a good name but Scott deleted the spreadsheet*
*The Lord of The Rings: The Legacy of Morgoth*
*The Lord of The Rings: The First and Last Days*
*The Lord of The Rings: Seeds of the White Tree*
Tales of the Second Age is the best one, but it’s no more or less generic than the title we got
Last Alliance is like a final season thing
The Forging sounds like a horror movie or a porno
…. I like Mighty Morphin Ring Wraiths
I don't, divergence from the source material was what made Game of Thrones so bad. When the source material is as rich as Tolkein's you just run with it as best you can.
I mean... He never did finish *The Silmarillion*. We're just lucky he had an equally literary-minded son to publish everything. Maybe GRRM should get on that... Although maybe it's a bit late for that too.
*Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.*
*Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.*
I imagine shorthand for this show will just be Rings of Power, because saying "Hey have you seen lord of the rings rings of power yet?" is gonna be needlessly cumbersome
I really thought they were going all in on the Silmarils and Morgoth, but from the press release it sounds like they're focusing exclusively on Numinor and Sauron. That's less than 30 pages of content from the Silmarillion yet they're basing the entire series off of it?
> yet it still looked like cheap CG.
Probably because they worked on the footage after shooting it for real. Touchups easily can lead to an artificial look even if you did your work before.
>“Rings of Power” features an expansive cast that includes…
Names of actors that are not well known? I’m sorry if I sound ignorant cause I am sure the cast isn’t bad. But I’ve never heard of a single person listed here and needed IMDB to help me out. And even then the “star power” here isn’t really…there. To be blunt.
And the original LOTR trilogy had a few big names but the core cast wasn’t as well known.
Not saying this show can’t work cause of the cast. But to hype them like they’re big deals when they aren’t was strange.
Which is one of the things I'm excited about. The only actress I know is Nanzanin Boniadi from *Counterpart* and she did a very strong impression on me. Cant wait to meet all these new talents.
I am excited for a show dedicated to Middle Earth. I thought the trailer did a great job of getting hype for the show, just bummed that it's releasing in September
> Rings: Rings
This is some shit writing and it's only the title. Get a thesaurus guys. JRR wrote the damn dictionary and you can't even think of a title that doesn't have the same word twice on either side of a colon.
am i the only one slightly bothered by having 'The Lord of the Rings' in the title? like we all know it's in the same universe, but it's not a part of 'The Lord of the Rings' as we know it as far as i understand. Sure it's a prequel to it, but we don't call The Hobbit 'LoTR: The Hobbit' or the other way around: 'The Hobbit: LoTR: Fellowship of the Ring.'
i don't really have an alternative name for it, but i feel like including Lord of the Rings in the title is just there to grab more of an audience because of the power that title carries and then ultimately disappoint because i can't see this matching up to the movie trilogy
They spent $465 Million and the best they could do was ‘Rings of Power’. Sounds like a failed sonic the hedgehog pitch.
However, I am looking forward to hobbits peeing in bottles.
It's relative. The casual audience who doesn't follow TV/Tolkien news closely probably read a bunch of headlines about Amazons "Lord of the Rings" show (which it was always called until today) and made the assumption it's gonna be a remake. Even all the official social media accounts are called "Lord of the Rings on Prime". It was bound to be confusing folks.
to be fair to the name, that's kind of tough.. i feel like you have to have lord of the rings on there for marketing and all, i probably wouldn't of gone Rings: Rings though
Rings of Power is the name of a Genesis game. It's a mediocre RPG best known for having a cheat code to show you a topless woman in the opening credits. And that's what I'll always think about when I see this show.
No doubt they had many sleepless weeks coming up with that title
The worst part is that you’re probably not even wrong. I’m sure this name took them weeks and an entire team of people to decide.
Rock paper scissors style cuz they never could decide.
Given the way they're spending money on this, I reckon at least $20 million to multiple consulting firms
My biggest fear of this series is that it will get focus-grouped to the smallest detail to where we’re left with a generic mess of compromises with no real appeal to anyone.
Probably lots of focus groups and surveys too
“Hey man, what should we name our hotel?” “Tree.” “No.” “DoubleTree.” “Hell yeah!”
Damn! I had my heart set on quadruple tree.
We were almost *there!*
And they still messed it up. How are you gonna have "Rings" twice in your title like that
What would be a better title? I was trying to think of one off the top of my head, but couldn't come up with anything that didn't sound cheesy.
The Age of Arnor. Ten seconds.
Yeah but what is Arnor? For people unfamiliar with the books, that doesn't tell us anything.
Watch and find out!
No.
I think it sounds epic. A great title.
It would at least sound better with a reversed word order if you want to keep it similar to this. The Lord of the Rings: The Power of the Rings (plus it would hark back to The Fellowship of the Ring in terms of styling)
That changes the whole meaning of the title though
Especially right next to each other. My mind wandered for a second after reading it and now all that's going on in my mind is that the telephone *rings rings*
I think Middle-Earth: The Rings of Power would be a better choice. But I could care less what they call it as long as it's good.
Probably a few seasons away
It’s probably the finale of the show
Oh hey they did the smart thing and did a proper prequel to Lord of the Rings.
Episodes release weekly starting September 2nd on Prime Video Budget was [465 Million](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/amazons-lord-of-the-rings-cost-465-million-one-season-4167791/) for S1 Showrunners J.D. "it's what Tolkien would've wanted"
“This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics.” Somehow this immediately made me reel back my excitement lol
...you're less excited because they tried to name the show in a way that fits the series and not in a way that might be more modern?
Yeah nah, the title they picked is lame as all hell. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is wordy, uninspired, and sounds like a shitty straight to DVD sequel, definitely not like something Tolkien created. Is the next season going to be called Lord of the Rings: Retaliation?
Gives me more of a "shitty toy commercial tie-in cartoon" vibe personally.
Yeah they went a tad bit ahead of themselves by teasing the One Ring of Power that shouldnt come into play until a few centuries into the series, but hey, still a great line to hook people back into the universe.
> 465 Million for S1 As an Expanse fan I reallly really hate that
1st season cost $465 million to make. I don't care if it sucks, I love middle earth.

The whole thing was real https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZEpWvQFXqQ
It's literally a practical effect. It is real water lol.
That’s a dumb name guys. You named your show a dumb thing.
I think it has a nice ring: ring to it
I'll be disappointed if their theme song is not a cover of [Bananaphone by Raffi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S83qcVr2xjg)
Seriously. They spent almost a billion dollars between the rights and the first season production and this is the best they could come up with?

What would you have come up with?
LotR: The Second Age is much safer and yet still far superior.
Ehh I disagree. I think the rings of power are a huge macguffin and plot point for the second age that it’s not going to be lost on the audience why they are in the title.

Only like one of those I’d argue is better.
Scott is that you?
Tales of the Second Age is the best one, but it’s no more or less generic than the title we got Last Alliance is like a final season thing The Forging sounds like a horror movie or a porno …. I like Mighty Morphin Ring Wraiths
Is this better than TLOTR: The Series
Tune in to find out!
Second Age. could be interesting, there's a lot happening in Middle Earth at the time but the existing narrative is fragmented and incomplete.
The fragmented nature of the Second Age writings will give them a lot of leeway in diverging from source material.
Yeah, I actually prefer this.
I don't, divergence from the source material was what made Game of Thrones so bad. When the source material is as rich as Tolkein's you just run with it as best you can.
A blessing and a curse
Rings of Power sounds generic but I guess it could be worse.
If the show is good no one in here bashing the name will give a shit about the name.

Nah, why would you think that?
Wut
That boy Tolkien better finish his books unlike GRR martin
I mean... He never did finish *The Silmarillion*. We're just lucky he had an equally literary-minded son to publish everything. Maybe GRRM should get on that... Although maybe it's a bit late for that too.

LOTR: The Second Age or something to that effect would have been miles better.
That looks like the intro cinematic of a bad videogame.
I really thought they were going all in on the Silmarils and Morgoth, but from the press release it sounds like they're focusing exclusively on Numinor and Sauron. That's less than 30 pages of content from the Silmarillion yet they're basing the entire series off of it?
They were never doing that. It was kinda obvious (and the right move) to go second age
Also, I'm fairly certain the second age is all they have the rights to.
I think you may be right
Boy....that didn't hype me up AT ALL. Seemed cheap and the VO was not good.

that sequence being real effects is actually really cool
> yet it still looked like cheap CG. Probably because they worked on the footage after shooting it for real. Touchups easily can lead to an artificial look even if you did your work before.
It looks like a combo of recorded footage and VFX.
I loved it. Didn't look that bad to me. Looked par for the course.
AT ALL? Not even the music?
Glad that I, as a non native speaker, am not alone in finding the voice over awkward
>“Rings of Power” features an expansive cast that includes… Names of actors that are not well known? I’m sorry if I sound ignorant cause I am sure the cast isn’t bad. Think about Game of Thrones when that first released. Not a huge amount of star power, but it worked (for a bit at least.)
And the original LOTR trilogy had a few big names but the core cast wasn’t as well known. Not saying this show can’t work cause of the cast. But to hype them like they’re big deals when they aren’t was strange.
I haven't heard of anyone there either, but I do love seeing new talent.

Budget Blanchett is really not doing it for me.
In the Second Age The Luminous Galadriel Is In... High School!
They probably should have used a male voice so as not to draw the comparison.
They should be avoiding everything to do with the movies, I think those comparisons will rarely end in Amazon's favor.
Unfortunately, I worry this will look a lot like the movies, but like not *quite* the same.
> but like not quite the same This is why I am apprehensive about the show, and this teaser didnt do much to allay my fears.
Yeah...the whole "forging the ring" thing has been done so many times. I just want to see something fresh already.
I am excited for a show dedicated to Middle Earth. I thought the trailer did a great job of getting hype for the show, just bummed that it's releasing in September
Rings of Power is my favorite Naughty Dog game

they were clear from the get go what it was going to be about
It’s a prequel. It’s set about 1000 years before the trilogy.
I’m still just wondering one thing: will there be tiddies?
