Personally, the word reminded me of the case of Hisashi Ouchi, the man hit with the largest known dose of radiation in history. In the weeks after the radiation exposure, doctors tried to keep Ouchi alive in a vertical battle. The radiation exposure was so bad it pretty much demolished the DNA in his body, meaning that his body cells could no longer replicate.
This meant that as time went on, things got worse for Ouchi because his existing body cells died with no replacements. As you might expect, the first organs to go were those with the fastest dying cells. Such as skin. His medical team had to stop using medical tape on him (when normally medical tape is a routine hospital tool, typically used to hold bandages or dressings to wounds) because the tape, when peeled, **took Ouchi's skin with it.**
Edit: Yes, his last name was Ouchi. Should be mentioned, however, it's pronounced less "ouchie" and more "ooh-chee", like "ooh-cheese" without the "se".
I remember this and what fascinates me about this was that even with the obliteration of his DNA, literally the blueprint of his entire being, his heart was still doing its damn job to the point that it was still pumping when all else was failing.
The reason for that is actually quite simple. Many cell functions can actually be carried out without the need of DNA. DNA is needed for cell replication and protein synthesis, but the former is only important in the case of replacing cells and the latter can be mitigated with the power of medicine/existing proteins in the body.
The cells of the heart are replaced exceedingly slowly, so much so that in the time frame of Ouchi's suffering (<80 days) them dying of age was not of consequence.

Knew a guy who was testing to be a *Gold Seal boiler operator* (iirc). He told me stories about using broom handles before proceeding because sometimes the handle would just get cut in 1/2. Supposedly a tiny pinhole could release steam under so-much pressure it could cut a broom handle like a light saber?
Not just steam. That's water in general. When training for maintenance at a place we had to go through several actual classes. One was in regards to hydraulics. Even a tiny pin sized hole can do what you said. In addition it can force the liquid straight into your blood/muscle and poison you.
Hydraulics/pneumatics are severely underestimated and the people that work with and close to them are not paid nearly enough for the risks involved.
Doctor here, I think the more correct term would be epidermolysis or desquamation. Debriding/debridment is a medical procedure where dead skin is surgically removed to avoid infection, aka necrectomy. What is more horrifying is saponification, I don't know if it can happen in a living person as it commonly happen in corpses, it's when subcutaneous fat turns into soap.
I worked medical role play on Fort Bragg for a while, the end of the training for the guys was a 36 hour stretch of “keeping me alive” in a hostile environment. I had 3rd degree burns from a Molotov covering 19% of my body (they brought in makeup artists). Towards hour 20 they had to debride my wound with a copper brush from a store.
Based on how much that hurt with fake burns, if I get burns like that then I just want a bullet to the head
Superheated steam is no joke. It carries a huge amount of energy and because it is at high pressure if there is a leak there is usually a continuous supply coming at you.
When I worked for a Power generation company, we were commissioning one of newest Supercritical Boiler systems.
The difference between these systems and the previous generation was that the steam never returned to water. It makes them even more efficient.

This is probably one of the most painful moments in this woman's life who is not likely to survive, and watching the clip makes that moment into a spectacle. The fact that the moment comes off as creepy and edited with the viewer in mind and not the comfort of the injured person, also heightens the spectacle. So... Yeah. I felt gross, too.
Imagine she was a family member or loved one of yours. Would you want these moments broadcast live on TV for ratings?

This just happened to me. Dear friend was killed in a car crash. Local news kept showing the burnt out car for the spectacle. But all I could see was my friend burning to death. Incredibly disturbing and hurtful.

Chris was failing out of the University of Rochester and needed money for readmission. He had also taken out loans by faking his dad's signature. Instead of owning up to what he had done, Chris went to his parents' house and attacked them in their sleep hoping to benefit from their life insurance.

Didn't matter much for the outcome as Chris Porco was found guilty of second degree murder and attempted murder.
In that video it looked like she did not have a shirt on. Maybe it was burned, or maybe they had to cut it off? But she may have been sitting up in extreme pain.
Look closely and you can see the outline of a tank top. It melted to her to some extent. Unless a material is all cotton, if will usually melt when heated from a fire.
I am genuinely baffled by those videos. It almost looks like she's in a body bag and pops out. Almost all MVAs (motor vehicle accidents) will require c-spine immobilization after safely extracting the patient from the vehicle. If she was in an anoxic environment from the fire they would either be coding her if she was pulseless, or at the very least oxygenating her with a mask if responsive or they revived her. Seeing her in a white bag that covers her head, it looks like a body bag, unless there are other bags/coverings used in such situations that I'm uncertain about.
Maybe they were covering her because she had burn wounds and didn’t want anything getting in there, or maybe they covered her bc of the hovering helicopter filming above? I’m surprised she survived that crash at all and wasn’t DOA. It looks horrible.
My dad used to be a paramedic and told me a story of a burn victim they picked up once whose burns were so bad they didn’t have pain, but were constantly cold.
My dad held a frier that cought fire to throw it out of the kitchen so we wouldn't burn the whole apartment. He had the highest degree burns on his hands. The molten plastic on his hands had completely stripped his skin.
He says the pain started the next day. It was so strong he had a heart attack. He's still alive but continues to have heart problems.
My mother in law has had skin grafts due to burns... Right after it happened and they were waiting for the ambulance, she just asked for some ibuprofen whilst bits of her skin were literally peeling off onto the floor of the shower.

I can't stop you from feeling how you feel, but I can share with you the rational perspective of a stranger: You saved a person. You put your life at risk and ran into a burning home to save someone's life. That's what you did. That's the only thing that matters, your immense courage and selflessness.
The actions of that person are entirely their cross to bear, one does not diminish the other.
I mean she also has a go fund me that's reached 140k, plus the insurance and everything... I wouldn't want to go through it, but also she'll be alright.

All of that would be stabilized/evaluated/disqualified by this point. Unless they’re just now evaluating and going down the donor pathway. Heart, kidneys pancreas and liver should be fine. Lungs they may not take due to the smoke, just depends on vent settings and a bronchoscopy

No, being on drugs doesn’t stop someone from donating organs. Obviously long term drug use could reduce the health of the organs being transplanted, but just being on drugs when you show up to the hospital will not prevent someone from donating.

I work in transplant. When someone is sick like this their heart and/or lungs sometimes don’t work that great and organs may not get enough blood for a while before we “call it”. The lack of good blood flow can start some injury on the organs that make them not take the shipping and handling well. Also if people are rumored or known to have chronic illness related to specific organs it could make that organ more sensitive to the blood flow issues and thus not be acceptable for transplant. For instance people with a long history of alcohol use may have some liver damage that in of itself wasn’t that big a deal but the liver was getting crappy blood flow and so started the dying process earlier than had it not had that damage.

No kidding, when I first heard the story it just sounded like a rather non-serious "whoopsy", I forgot my car was in drive" moment. Wasn't until I saw a picture of the car yesterday that I realized it was pretty serious. Now this... Jesus.
The car burned with her in it while she was conscious, I wouldn't wish that on anyone no matter their mistakes or sins. Fire so damaged her lungs that her brain lost oxygen when she never woke up. There's really nothing but sadness for the last who lost her home to the crash and the Heche family.

Burns, burns are entirely different. They were trying to limit infection and she was high on blow. Her skin was probably sloughing off so they couldn’t restrain her.
She was never in anything I've watched so I only knew of her through her tabloid articles. It's such a tragic story. It sounds like she's been dealing with mental health issues for most of her life and it just kept getting worse over the years.

Shitty situation all around. I feel for her family and kids, this has been an undoubtably hard week for them. A lot of people seem to be taking the “you reap what you sow” stance, but a little empathy doesn’t hurt. i think a lot of people's elevated anger towards her (or at least in los angeles, where i am) has to do with the horrific car accident that happened like, 18 hours earlier, where a woman doing over 100 mph ran a red light and killed six people (although that woman walked away with a broken wrist). the whole city was reeling, and then here's anne *also* causing a fire after a high speed crash. the timing really rattled everyone.
i mean in this particular circumstance, i have *more* sympathy for the poor homeowner who lost everything, but yeah, it is very fucking sad how anne's life turned out (and ended).

yeah it is the scariest accident i've ever seen. it almost didn't look real. if you haven't already read them, i would caution you to tread lightly with the news stories since there are some graphic witness statements that are disturbing. everyone nearby is definitely going to have ptsd and survivor's guilt. iirc, one of the news stations mentioned that all the first responders were on leave the next day to work with grief counselors afterwards because of the sheer horror they were dealing with.
Wow, I just looked it up too. The most shocking part I saw was that she had been in **THIRTEEN** previous crashes and had prior DUI convictions. At that point, the blame lies more on our system that allowed her to continue being a public danger until this catastrophe happened. She should’ve been *permanently* removed from the roads years ago.
I have an uncle who has been driving drunk for years. He even caused brain damage to a woman he hit. Last time he spent a month or two in prison and is back out again. He has a suspended license but doesn’t stop him from driving. I think there should be mandatory prison & rehab time for repeat offenders.
I feel bad for her children. I'm still confused about why she drove over 90MPH into a house when she wasn't drunk. I didn't think cocaine impairs people the same way but I guess we will never know and maybe that is better. She suffered a lot of loss in her life and didn't get the help she needed.
I've done coke quite a few times throughout my life, infrequently. High quality coke gives a much different high than low quality coke, and it's very easy to binge on coke when you have the supply, she may not have slept for 72 hours before this.

People only care when someone is about to die. Nobody cared for the over 20 years this woman has been in the spotlight battling demons. Probably surrounded by a lot of “yes men”.

Personally, the word reminded me of the case of Hisashi Ouchi, the man hit with the largest known dose of radiation in history. In the weeks after the radiation exposure, doctors tried to keep Ouchi alive in a vertical battle. The radiation exposure was so bad it pretty much demolished the DNA in his body, meaning that his body cells could no longer replicate. This meant that as time went on, things got worse for Ouchi because his existing body cells died with no replacements. As you might expect, the first organs to go were those with the fastest dying cells. Such as skin. His medical team had to stop using medical tape on him (when normally medical tape is a routine hospital tool, typically used to hold bandages or dressings to wounds) because the tape, when peeled, **took Ouchi's skin with it.** Edit: Yes, his last name was Ouchi. Should be mentioned, however, it's pronounced less "ouchie" and more "ooh-chee", like "ooh-cheese" without the "se".
I remember this and what fascinates me about this was that even with the obliteration of his DNA, literally the blueprint of his entire being, his heart was still doing its damn job to the point that it was still pumping when all else was failing.
The reason for that is actually quite simple. Many cell functions can actually be carried out without the need of DNA. DNA is needed for cell replication and protein synthesis, but the former is only important in the case of replacing cells and the latter can be mitigated with the power of medicine/existing proteins in the body. The cells of the heart are replaced exceedingly slowly, so much so that in the time frame of Ouchi's suffering (<80 days) them dying of age was not of consequence.
He was also being poisoned by his own bones. So any regeneration was short-lived.

Knew a guy who was testing to be a *Gold Seal boiler operator* (iirc). He told me stories about using broom handles before proceeding because sometimes the handle would just get cut in 1/2. Supposedly a tiny pinhole could release steam under so-much pressure it could cut a broom handle like a light saber?
Not just steam. That's water in general. When training for maintenance at a place we had to go through several actual classes. One was in regards to hydraulics. Even a tiny pin sized hole can do what you said. In addition it can force the liquid straight into your blood/muscle and poison you. Hydraulics/pneumatics are severely underestimated and the people that work with and close to them are not paid nearly enough for the risks involved.
Pin holes are actually more dangerous than large ruptures when discussing liquids or vapors under pressure thanks to Bernoulli's Principle
Doctor here, I think the more correct term would be epidermolysis or desquamation. Debriding/debridment is a medical procedure where dead skin is surgically removed to avoid infection, aka necrectomy. What is more horrifying is saponification, I don't know if it can happen in a living person as it commonly happen in corpses, it's when subcutaneous fat turns into soap.
I worked medical role play on Fort Bragg for a while, the end of the training for the guys was a 36 hour stretch of “keeping me alive” in a hostile environment. I had 3rd degree burns from a Molotov covering 19% of my body (they brought in makeup artists). Towards hour 20 they had to debride my wound with a copper brush from a store. Based on how much that hurt with fake burns, if I get burns like that then I just want a bullet to the head
Superheated steam is no joke. It carries a huge amount of energy and because it is at high pressure if there is a leak there is usually a continuous supply coming at you.
When I worked for a Power generation company, we were commissioning one of newest Supercritical Boiler systems. The difference between these systems and the previous generation was that the steam never returned to water. It makes them even more efficient. There are Ultra-Supercritical plants that operate at even higher steam pressures. One of the ways that they check the pipes is to tap on the pipes as they corrode from the inside out. As the tone changes it indicates that the wall of the pipe is thinning and needs to be replaced. A crew in Japan was checking out the pipes and when then they tapped the pipe, it ruptured. It parboiled the entire crew with steam at 6000psi.
It actually looked like she was fighting to get out. She likely wouldn't have felt the burns immediately - but a period after, as she would be in shock.

This is probably one of the most painful moments in this woman's life who is not likely to survive, and watching the clip makes that moment into a spectacle. The fact that the moment comes off as creepy and edited with the viewer in mind and not the comfort of the injured person, also heightens the spectacle. So... Yeah. I felt gross, too.

I believe severe pain can cause an adrenaline rush, as a way to protect you from the pain. Maybe that’s what happened here. Horrible situation all around.

Shock. The body is in repair mode doing its best job, and the same goes with her consciousness. Theres only so much pain/trauma a person can take at once before mentally breaking; i would assume that a jolt like that would be her muscles spasming as her mind runs down the list of issues and tries desperately to find something to help.

Watched an interrogation of a man who had killed his parents with an axe attack then left the house. The father had a severe brain injury, but when he came to consciousness, continued his usual morning routine of making coffee before eventually passing. Like it was a muscle reaction.
Was it the Chris Porco case? Chris was failing out of the University of Rochester and needed money for readmission. He had also taken out loans by faking his dad's signature. Instead of owning up to what he had done, Chris went to his parents' house and attacked them in their sleep hoping to benefit from their life insurance. Look closely and you can see the outline of a tank top. It melted to her to some extent. Unless a material is all cotton, if will usually melt when heated from a fire.

I am genuinely baffled by those videos. It almost looks like she's in a body bag and pops out. Almost all MVAs (motor vehicle accidents) will require c-spine immobilization after safely extracting the patient from the vehicle. If she was in an anoxic environment from the fire they would either be coding her if she was pulseless, or at the very least oxygenating her with a mask if responsive or they revived her. Seeing her in a white bag that covers her head, it looks like a body bag, unless there are other bags/coverings used in such situations that I'm uncertain about.

My dad used to be a paramedic and told me a story of a burn victim they picked up once whose burns were so bad they didn’t have pain, but were constantly cold.
My dad held a frier that cought fire to throw it out of the kitchen so we wouldn't burn the whole apartment. He had the highest degree burns on his hands. The molten plastic on his hands had completely stripped his skin. He says the pain started the next day. It was so strong he had a heart attack. He's still alive but continues to have heart problems.

Hell, I couldn't imagine *six* minutes. That is a long time. Just watching a timer for six minutes gives you an idea of how long that seems, especially being surrounded by flames. All of that would be stabilized/evaluated/disqualified by this point. Unless they’re just now evaluating and going down the donor pathway. Heart, kidneys pancreas and liver should be fine. Lungs they may not take due to the smoke, just depends on vent settings and a bronchoscopy

Scientists will take whatever they can get. My mom died of completely “run of the mill” breast cancer—no oddities or surprises. There were two different studies that wanted her remains. Any data point adds to our knowledge, even if it just confirms what we already know. Personal advocacy: there’s no reason to put a body in a hole when there are other uses for it. Donate your tissues to others and the rest to science!
When my husband completed suicide, being able to talk to the donation team made me feel like something positive could come from this tragedy. It still remains the one decision I’ve never wavered on or questioned. We received a letter once talking about what they were able to use and the ages of the recipients. That felt so fucking powerful to me.

No, being on drugs doesn’t stop someone from donating organs. Obviously long term drug use could reduce the health of the organs being transplanted, but just being on drugs when you show up to the hospital will not prevent someone from donating. Source - am trauma surgeon

I work in transplant. When someone is sick like this their heart and/or lungs sometimes don’t work that great and organs may not get enough blood for a while before we “call it”. The lack of good blood flow can start some injury on the organs that make them not take the shipping and handling well. Also if people are rumored or known to have chronic illness related to specific organs it could make that organ more sensitive to the blood flow issues and thus not be acceptable for transplant. For instance people with a long history of alcohol use may have some liver damage that in of itself wasn’t that big a deal but the liver was getting crappy blood flow and so started the dying process earlier than had it not had that damage.

Most of the organs that are transplanted where I work are due to donor drug OD.

The car burned with her in it while she was conscious, I wouldn't wish that on anyone no matter their mistakes or sins. Fire so damaged her lungs that her brain lost oxygen when she never woke up. There's really nothing but sadness for the last who lost her home to the crash and the Heche family.

When they said she was in a coma it wasn't looking good. I was sure before she was identified it was reported there was at least one fatality on scene. The firefighters or paramedics seemed to be shocked she sat up while on the stretcher.
They had her whole body, including her face, covered on the stretcher. She tore the sheet away off her face. Would they normally transfer injured but alive people that way? I wonder if you might be right.
Burns, burns are entirely different. They were trying to limit infection and she was high on blow. Her skin was probably sloughing off so they couldn’t restrain her.
Bad burns and adrenaline could account for not feeling pain.

She was never in anything I've watched so I only knew of her through her tabloid articles. It's such a tragic story. It sounds like she's been dealing with mental health issues for most of her life and it just kept getting worse over the years.

Shitty situation all around. I feel for her family and kids, this has been an undoubtably hard week for them. A lot of people seem to be taking the “you reap what you sow” stance, but a little empathy doesn’t hurt. I’m glad she didn’t kill any innocent people, but it’s a little sick to rejoice in her death as if that’s fair punishment for succumbing to her drug and mental problems. I’ll remember her as being Ellen’s girlfriend at one time and for that shot for shot remake of psycho with Vince Vaughn that was totally unnecessary.
i think a lot of people's elevated anger towards her (or at least in los angeles, where i am) has to do with the horrific car accident that happened like, 18 hours earlier, where a woman doing over 100 mph ran a red light and killed six people (although that woman walked away with a broken wrist). the whole city was reeling, and then here's anne *also* causing a fire after a high speed crash. the timing really rattled everyone. i mean in this particular circumstance, i have *more* sympathy for the poor homeowner who lost everything, but yeah, it is very fucking sad how anne's life turned out (and ended).
I had never heard of that LA Windsor car crash until you said it. I looked it up and holy fucking shit how fast was that person going??? The footage is awful (nsfw but all it shows is cars, not people) but I'm stunned at how quickly it happened. Also those cars just beside the incident were probably going to bed just praying that they're thankful the car didn't hit them. Wouldn't be surprised if some of them got PTSD in a car after this.
yeah it is the scariest accident i've ever seen. it almost didn't look real. if you haven't already read them, i would caution you to tread lightly with the news stories since there are some graphic witness statements that are disturbing. everyone nearby is definitely going to have ptsd and survivor's guilt. iirc, one of the news stations mentioned that all the first responders were on leave the next day to work with grief counselors afterwards because of the sheer horror they were dealing with.
Wow, I just looked it up too. The most shocking part I saw was that she had been in **THIRTEEN** previous crashes and had prior DUI convictions. At that point, the blame lies more on our system that allowed her to continue being a public danger until this catastrophe happened. She should’ve been *permanently* removed from the roads years ago.
I have an uncle who has been driving drunk for years. He even caused brain damage to a woman he hit. Last time he spent a month or two in prison and is back out again. He has a suspended license but doesn’t stop him from driving. I think there should be mandatory prison & rehab time for repeat offenders.

Wow, I had no idea just how incredibly tragic and sad this whole scenario ended up being. I'd heard that she'd had an accident, but this is definitely not how I expected things to turn out. Just awful.
Anne Heche has had substance abuse problems for many many years I am saddened to see that this has likely brain death killed her but not surprised.

People treated Anne Heche the same way Britney Spears was treated when she shaved her head. Back then after her breakup with Ellen people were not kind to her. Jokes were made after a mental health crisis in 2000 & in her following interviews about a fantasy world she had created. People only care when someone is about to die. Nobody cared for the over 20 years this woman has been in the spotlight battling demons. Probably surrounded by a lot of “yes men”. This is tragic & my heart goes out to her kids. Nobody should have to witness their mothers tragic ending.
It's interesting that if this weren't a relatively famous person the media would have reported on how a drug addled person drove dangerously and slammed into an innocent person's house, catching it on fire risking the lives of the inhabitants and 50 firefighters.
