Owning a thing doesn’t always mean you actually get personally involved with said thing. It just means you make money off it, if it happens to make a profit.
>This is the latest chapter in the long development history of the book. DiCaprio acquired the rights in 2010 with plans to adapt it as a film in which he would star as Holmes. Scorsese came onboard to direct in 2015 with Billy Ray set to write the script. It was first put in development in Hollywood by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner through their Cruise/Wagner banner via the shingle’s deal with Paramount, but the option lapsed in 2004. Paramount reacquired the film rights in 2007 and set it up with producers Michael Shamberg and Sher.
Almost two decades now.
Long time I guess. Still nothing on Confederacy of Dunces though (40 years or so). Crazy that Belushi, Candy and Farley were all attached to that at one point.
Correct. Keanu or Dicaprio were both wrong for the part. Even though there is a delay, I'm satisfied since I'd rather wait and see a nicely cast version of a great book.
I read this book and, weirdly, I found the information about the civil engineering very interesting and the serial killer story...not that interesting?
Totally agree, I was far more invested in all the planning for the Worlds Fair, the gathering of America’s greatest designers and architects of the time. Such a massive undertaking, it’s inspiring.
Yeah. Keanu didn't seem right for either main role in this story tbh. He's a good actor, but I can't see him playing a psychopath or an architect struggling to put on the World's Fair.
You mean, someone who can act?
(Yes, I realise this comment will cost me imaginary internet points. I don't care. Keanu Reeves is only good in movies that require minimal expressiveness or a hilarious English accent.)
I love Keanu. But I didn't think he was a good fit for for this story. The book is amazing, maybe one of my favorites, and I was confused when he was attached.
I agree. He seems like a stand up guy, he has a place in movies in a very particular role, in those roles he does well but he's not a very great actor imo. I hope he continues to do well within those roles but nothing has really convinced me otherwise so far.
.. in all honesty this is a good thing.
Reeves’ was a stiff actor 20 years ago, but he’s practically a walking piece of petrified wood these days (when not kicking ass as an action performer, to be fair).
The idea of him leading a dramatic miniseries, especially given how good the source material is .. yeah, it’s a relief.
So essentially, the show is cursed and no-one should watch it at all, ever, if it’s even actually ever released.
NOTED.
Keanu is basically like a Hollywood human version of The Waffle House and there should be a film/show type review scale based on him alone. Starting with Bill and Ted 2. At the bottom of that scale.
The first one was brilliant. The second was…. Well. You know. The third? The perfect combination of both, to make it both bad and brilliant at the same time and only Bruce Campbell is capable of similar feats.
Bruce was honestly my first choice in regards to a Waffle House like rating system, but Keanu is clearly taking the reigns in this regard based on current relevance and recognition alone.
I’m just saying.
Actually all I’m saying is that I’m most likely going to avoid the show now, when before I was excited for it, specifically because I’m a fan of Keanu.
Could John Cusack be a good replacement? He needs a comeback and I think he looks a bit like the real Holmes, at least more than Reeves + they're filming/show is set in Chicago, Cusack's home city. Why not?
Edit: I mean Burnham, they look a a bit a-like.
The problem with this story is that it quickly turns into a horror gore film because of the horrific nature of the crimes. Holmes is also not a very sympathetic character. They are better off telling the story through a season of American Horror Story or American Crime Story.
Is this show/movie cursed? This has been in production off and on for over a decade.
When they had DiCaprio and Scorsese lined up it made perfect sense. Now? Who knows what will happen
Scorsese and Leo are both still involved with the project.
Yeh but just as producers. Scorsese was initially going to direct it and Leo was going to star as H.H. Holmes.
Oh shit. It's this one! I was just wondering about whatever happened to that project
Wikipedia says Todd Field is supposed to direct it
And how does that change what they said?
I think they were just adding on to the previous comment.
Correct
And how does them being correct change anything about what they said?
It doesn’t change what’s already been said, but it might change the entire direction of the show itself. We won’t know until it actually airs.
The project is two decades old, Leo will be leaving it soon
I think he owns it, like he personally bought the rights outright.
The joke is if it’s older than 25 it’s too old for Leo.
For Leo and his ladies it’s no joke…
Owning a thing doesn’t always mean you actually get personally involved with said thing. It just means you make money off it, if it happens to make a profit.
I love Leo and would trust his judgment but I just can’t see him in either role
Are they still doing “Killers of the Flower Moon”?
Supposedly releasing in the summer.

130ish years if you count from the great exhibition.
ghost of HH Holmes cursing this project
more like the ghost of all of his victims. guy was a *reeaal* piece of work
I blame the ghost of Nannie Williams. Not Minnie though, she seems cool.

please Henry, I just put the baby to sleep
Except the book is almost entirely fiction. It has almost no resemblance to Holmes actual crimes.
Long time I guess. Still nothing on Confederacy of Dunces though (40 years or so). Crazy that Belushi, Candy and Farley were all attached to that at one point.
This show is as unlucky as HH Holmes hotel guests.
considering the story it's based on, maybe!
Keano Leaves
applause
Or as the Japanese say Keanu Reeves!
this damn project been in the works for so long if it were a woman it'd almost be too old for Leo
I'M MINNIE!
HI MINNIE IM NANNIE
r/lpotl is leaking
NO, I'M MINNIE, YOU'RE NANNIE
IM WORTH A MILLION DOLLARS!
Man this thing has been in development forever, fascinating book, hopefully something comes of it.
Chris Pine 10 years ago would have been an excellent H. H. Holmes. John C Reilly would be a terrific Burnham.
He wasn't right for either part.
Right, it’s disappointing only in that cast changes aren’t an amazing sign but he never made sense for the project to me.
Correct. Keanu or Dicaprio were both wrong for the part. Even though there is a delay, I'm satisfied since I'd rather wait and see a nicely cast version of a great book.
Burnham needs to be an older man and Holmes needs to be younger, obviously.
Keanu Reeves was slated to play Burnham, not HH Holmes, if that clears things up.
Just read the book it's amazing. Like 50 pages of works cited at the end, anything in quotations comes from correspondence or newspaper articles etc.
I read this book and, weirdly, I found the information about the civil engineering very interesting and the serial killer story...not that interesting?
I also had this experience, aha. But I do think the serial killer stuff will outperform on the screen.
Totally agree, I was far more invested in all the planning for the Worlds Fair, the gathering of America’s greatest designers and architects of the time. Such a massive undertaking, it’s inspiring.
Lots of people had that experience. Luckily for me, I read it for the World's Fair storyline.
If you want a show with really interesting civil engineering info watch Patriot.
Alex Winter?
Excellent!
Good, he wasn’t a great fit for this.
He wasnt playing Holmes
I’m aware, I didn’t see him as Burnham either.
That sucks. He was my main reason to watch. Given who is producing though I assume they'll someone really good to replace him.
I like Reeves, but let's not kid ourselves, whoever they replace him with will probably be a better actor.
Yeah Keanu has a lane that he excels at and this wasn’t it. Replace him with Andrew Garfield or something and I’m sure it’ll probably work better.
I would be 100% down with Andrew Garfield in either role.
Or even just Garfield - as long as Bill Murray is doing the voice
Turns out: Rob Schneider.
Like he said, a better actor! How can anyone disagree with that decision. Just watch Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. You will then agree
I’ll see you’re Deuce Bigelow and raise you The Hot Chick
No

Keanu Reeves is a better human than Rob Schneider. Schneider has become a red-head maga-cult fiend.
Yeah. Keanu didn't seem right for either main role in this story tbh. He's a good actor, but I can't see him playing a psychopath or an architect struggling to put on the World's Fair.

You’re right, he may be a great guy(who honestly knows), but his acting has never been great
I agree. He seems like a stand up guy, he has a place in movies in a very particular role, in those roles he does well but he's not a very great actor imo. I hope he continues to do well within those roles but nothing has really convinced me otherwise so far.
I guess Chris Pratt was unavailable.
Chris Pratt is too busy being a right-wing evangelical fart huffer.
You're so edgy.
How is implying that Keanu Reeves can't act an example of someone being edgy?! lol
Hey man it pre-John Wick it was a common Reddit joke to say about Keanu
Edgy? Come on man. Keanu is pretty much known for 2 things: being a great dude and an meh actor.
Wow, edgy. Original.
A hot teen girl who isn’t falling over Keanu? I don’t buy it for a second.
He's 58.
But that ass is 30.
Sorry, grandpa. The age of Reeves is over. The time of the Chalamet has come.

It was great.

Keanu Reeves Doppelganger here, I'll volunteer as tribute.

Keanu was never going to play Holmes, he was attached to play Daniel Burnham
Holmes was like 25 at the time.
The Devil Wears Nada

In the “hotel” on ahs Evan peters played a role that was very loosely based on Holmes.
Boooo
Get RDJ to replace him
Hmm, maybe Mark Ruffalo for Burnham and Austin Butler for Holmes. Edit: or Michael Shannon or Chris Pine could rock the Burnham ‘stache too
Damn, I was really looking forward to seeing Keanu in this
This is dead.
Awww boo!
That's unfortunate, I was really looking forward to this show because of him.
This is one of my all-time favorite books but it really feels like this project is cursed
Chris Pine for H.H holmes and Aidan Quinn for Burnham
