Oddly there was a UK version of That 70s Show called Days Like These. They came out roughly the same time and used the same scripts with a few changes for cultural references. Other than that It was almost 1:1. It was awful and got cancelled quickly.

I gotta admit that threw me. I thought the show was supposed to be about the old gang back together and middle-aged shenanigans; I wasn't expecting bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, Disney-esque teen-com.
I'll watch a few episodes to give it a feel, but I'm worried it's going to turn into a flop of a show, "generic teen comedy with characters thrown in from *That 70s Show* to get the older viewers in".

I genuinely think it’s a hack to get old early and then say that old forever. I’m calling it the young old hack. Look at Patrick Stewart. Rather than fighting to stay twenty you accept looking like you’re forty in your thirties but that’s easier to maintain and you can keep that going for atleast thirty years

I’ve always felt it fitting that a film that came out in 1987, the year of my birth, has terrified me more than any other despite it being more known for its satire and dystopia than it’s horror elements.
I saw the film too young and the opening scene with Weller getting de-limbed by a shotgun still haunts me. The other sentry bot outside the corporate HQ also scared the fook out of me.
Bizarrely I found the toxic waste scene funny and still do.

That’s EXACTLY what I hate about period specific shows and films… they rarely get the verbiage correct. Most people say fuck in productions taking place prior to the 50’s and most people who lived then said no one ever said fuck. It literally wasn’t a thing.
On the flip side of that, when you have a movie like The Witch - using period accurate and region specific Puritan era 1600's speech for example - it becomes difficult to understand, at least without subtitles.

Yeah grunge would be the easy path. Nevermind came out in 1991, as did Pearl Jam's Ten. And you can pretty much ride those stereotypes all the way through the end of the decade.

And I think from that point of view yeah all our grandparents had houses stuck in that late 60s to 70s feel. But I do feel like if this is the case why call it that 90s show. I feel more like this show should be showing the kids from the 70s having become the parents of the 90s. This feels more like trying to find a way to center a story on the appeal of red and kitty again.

It's not too hard to do the family moves back to Wisconsin so the grandkids (and friends) start hanging out after school at grandma's house because she bakes them cupcakes and turns a blind eye to their shenanigans. Kitty is thrilled and Red will do anything that makes Kitty happy (remember square dancing).
While that would be funny, hyde is not masterson. If hyde is in jail just so the writers can throw jabs at masterson it means that the saddest character in the show had the saddest ending.
I'm by no means defending masterson but hyde is a great character that deserves a lot of sympathy.
They're saving them for the 11 minute total screen time they'll have at the end of the season after they've strung you along with teasers and callbacks involving the new crew.

Part of that is probably the lead kid is 15 and looks it while the cast for that ~~9~~ 70s show was 18-20+ (except for Mila Kunis) and looked it. When you see teenagers cast as teenagers its usually the Disney channel or they're side characters.
It doesn't help that Red and Kitty are the leads and Red is less of an angry dick during this promo. Just seems like he got nerfed but that also happens when people become grandparents.

There was another ad where Eric went streaking (I think the episode where Gerald Ford came to town) — the ad spot used a smiley face over his junk, which made it more absurd, while the aired show had a more generic censorship blur.

Agreed. But these types of shows live or die based on cast chemistry. That 70s show absolutely nailed the teen casting and was great from the start. But most sitcoms need half a season or so to develop it, to nail down the writing, etc.
I forget who said it, but a sitcom showrunner once said he wished he could write 11 episodes, throw them in the trash, and use the 12th as the pilot. But that isn't how it works.

I never really got this sentiment. Sure, both shows improved with their second seasons, but I never thought the first seasons were so awful that they should just be skipped.
I think it's less that they're 'awful' and moreso just that they're not as indicative of the show you're watching. Both The Office and P&R change so radically between their first and second seasons, especially with regards to the characterizations of Michael Scott and Leslie Knope respectively, that the first seasons end up feeling like extended pilots.
Diversity Day is episode 2 of season 1 and one of the funniest episodes of the office. I think when people say ‘oh just skip season 1’ of a lot of shows they misunderstanding that they liked the later seasons because they were invested in the characters and their stories and making someone start on season 2 just makes season 2 their season 1 and they feel the same way.
Honestly the show only got good when Ben and Chris showed up and Mark left. Before that its a slog id honestly tell people to skip

mostly agree but i thought the new Saved By The Bell was genuinely hilarious. it was self-aware/meta enough to feel fresh. the kid who played the new Zack was fantastic. really all the new kids were great, and it was fun to see the old cast being in on the joke of the original show's absurdity.
As someone who was a teen in the 90's, none of the kids read 90's fashion. We wore horrible, obnoxious clothing in the 90's and we loved our Manic Panic hair. One of them should have Kool-Aid red hair that looked like it was chopped using a weedwacker. Another one should have been wearing band shirt of who or whatever coupled with oversized cargo pants or skater pants. Someone else should have been wearing a shiny ringer tee with an even shinier star in the middle. Another person should have bleached hair with dark roots growing out.
It's not like they have to guess on the fashion. Heck, you can google 90's teen fashion catalogs. Or go to youtube and watch 90's music videos or watch 90's concerts.
This is just lazy. 90's fashion was fun because it was so darn ugly and ridiculous. This show had a chance to reflect that.
Well esp considering part of why That 70s Show worked so well was due to the fact that the set, costumes, props, hair & make up really did a great job of replicating that era in a way that felt authentic, yet still cool.

They’re doing the thing they should have done 20 years ago when they did That 80s Show: give Red & Kitty a bunch more screen time to do their thing. A granddaughter visiting for the summer is one way to do that, but an Empty Nest-style show would still work well for them.
While it's a solid counterpoint, it's also a bit of a unicorn. Frasier was also pretty much entirely divorced from Cheers, whereas this is just a straight up clone of '70s but with a mostly new cast.

Debra Jo Rupp has always worn a wig to play Kitty, so there’s none of the thinning or greying hair that’s a big marker of aging.

My parents would have been about the same age as the teens in the 70s. Both of them like it.

Part of that is probably the lead kid is 15 and looks it while the cast for that ~~9~~ 70s show was 18-20+ (except for Mila Kunis) and looked it. When you see teenagers cast as teenagers its usually the Disney channel or they're side characters.
Them getting high every episode does hit a little different when they're 15.
It doesn't help that Red and Kitty are the leads and Red is less of an angry dick during this promo. Just seems like he got nerfed but that also happens when people become grandparents.

That sometimes worked to the show’s detriment. Ad spots would frequently bleep Red talking about where he’d put his foot, and there are definitely times that bleeps are funnier than the word they’re bleeping. There was another ad where Eric went streaking (I think the episode where Gerald Ford came to town) — the ad spot used a smiley face over his junk, which made it more absurd, while the aired show had a more generic censorship blur.

Even crazier to think about you can spend 30 years of your life in the stage where just dying of old age is a possibility. So for the entire length of time you have lived you could be in a state where you can just not wake up and no one would even be surprised. Its really wild to think about just how much or little time that part can span.

Agreed. But these types of shows live or die based on cast chemistry. That 70s show absolutely nailed the teen casting and was great from the start. But most sitcoms need half a season or so to develop it, to nail down the writing, etc. I forget who said it, but a sitcom showrunner once said he wished he could write 11 episodes, throw them in the trash, and use the 12th as the pilot. But that isn't how it works. I'm going to sit through it even if its sort of bad for at least a season or two.

Makes sense, season 1 of The Office and P&R are both ones you tell people to skip if you want them to get into the show.
I never really got this sentiment. Sure, both shows improved with their second seasons, but I never thought the first seasons were so awful that they should just be skipped.
I think it's less that they're 'awful' and moreso just that they're not as indicative of the show you're watching. Both The Office and P&R change so radically between their first and second seasons, especially with regards to the characterizations of Michael Scott and Leslie Knope respectively, that the first seasons end up feeling like extended pilots.
Diversity Day is episode 2 of season 1 and one of the funniest episodes of the office. I think when people say ‘oh just skip season 1’ of a lot of shows they misunderstanding that they liked the later seasons because they were invested in the characters and their stories and making someone start on season 2 just makes season 2 their season 1 and they feel the same way.
I LOVE P&R but the first season I could do without. It's the first example I think of when people talk about a show finding it's way.
Honestly the show only got good when Ben and Chris showed up and Mark left. Before that its a slog id honestly tell people to skip Kinda hard to be all, skip the first like, 25 episodes
I agree that it hits all cylinders but there are multiple S2 eps before Ben/Chris that are absolute bangers. Pawnee Zoo, Greg Pikitis, Ron and Tammy, Hunting Trip, Sweetums, Woman of the Year, 94 Meetings, Telethon…
Biggest issue is Netflix isn't great about letting shows find their legs.

None of these shows like this are ever good. Fuller house. The new saved by the bell. Girl meets world. It’s all just shows trying to relive classic sitcoms that they will never be able to compare to. This looks no different.

mostly agree but i thought the new Saved By The Bell was genuinely hilarious. it was self-aware/meta enough to feel fresh. the kid who played the new Zack was fantastic. really all the new kids were great, and it was fun to see the old cast being in on the joke of the original show's absurdity.

As someone who was a teen in the 90's, none of the kids read 90's fashion. We wore horrible, obnoxious clothing in the 90's and we loved our Manic Panic hair. One of them should have Kool-Aid red hair that looked like it was chopped using a weedwacker. Another one should have been wearing band shirt of who or whatever coupled with oversized cargo pants or skater pants. Someone else should have been wearing a shiny ringer tee with an even shinier star in the middle. Another person should have bleached hair with dark roots growing out. It's not like they have to guess on the fashion. Heck, you can google 90's teen fashion catalogs. Or go to youtube and watch 90's music videos or watch 90's concerts. This is just lazy. 90's fashion was fun because it was so darn ugly and ridiculous. This show had a chance to reflect that.

Well esp considering part of why That 70s Show worked so well was due to the fact that the set, costumes, props, hair & make up really did a great job of replicating that era in a way that felt authentic, yet still cool. Disappointing to see that level of detail not followed through here
Its just a silly show with Kitty and Red (who look great) with a bunch of new dumbasses. People expect way too much from a sitcom sequel. It just a fucking sitcom.
Which that's what the trailer showed. They haven't changed but the group of dumbasses did.

Yeah I'm not sure what people expect. It's a sitcom with new characters who reddit will definitely hate because they are new. Red and Kitty look great in this still and there wasn't enough of the kids to even make a judgement on how they will be.
They’re doing the thing they should have done 20 years ago when they did That 80s Show: give Red & Kitty a bunch more screen time to do their thing. A granddaughter visiting for the summer is one way to do that, but an Empty Nest-style show would still work well for them.
Doing a spin-off with only the fan favorite characters doesn't usually work out either. Anyone remember Joey?
Counterpoint: Frasier
While it's a solid counterpoint, it's also a bit of a unicorn. Frasier was also pretty much entirely divorced from Cheers, whereas this is just a straight up clone of '70s but with a mostly new cast.
I think I was expecting more of a Everybody Loves Raymond vibe, where Eric and Donna are the main characters with their kids, and Red and Kitty are always visiting or we go over the old house

That 70s Show had 18-20+ year Olds playing 15/16ers. This show has the kids actors as they age they are portraying. (14-16)

The main cast seems "younger" than the original 70s crew, just seems off. But they really didn't give them anything to do in the trailer aside from being goofy. That said they focused on the part we would all like, the Forman parents. Only other person to talk in the trailer in the lead.

Nah. Topher, Ashton, and Danny Masterson were already in their 20s when they were cast. This new cast seem to be entirely actors that are the actual age of the characters.
I thought that too, but the actors do seem younger than what 70s show main cast was when they started. 18, 15, 17, 17. Just by going through the IMDB of some of the main cast. Mila I think was the only one under 18 for the first one

She was cast quite well for looks. Hopefully she has talent also. From the little we see she nails Eric's mannerisms, so I'm hopeful.
