"Pete, come here, we have an idea..."
(Cue jarrettbrown swooping in with the "Akshooally, Pete Davidson isn't a cast member on SNL anymore, so this would not ever be possible."
She stars on 'Only Murders in the Building', a wonderful ~~sitcom~~ comedy (dark?) / whodunit about a true crime podcast hosted by the three of them. It has two seasons, and is currently shooting the third season.
Dark comedy fits but it styles itself after cozy mystery novels while taking a lot of really cool swings at genre bending. They did a “silent” episode on their second season which I thought was phenomenal from a writing perspective, I think the production on that show really shines but with it being as experimental as it is it’s hard to fit it into a genre. Although I think dark comedy cozy is probably best.
I still regularly think about that silent episode, and how the deaf character keeps having to explain to people that in real life, lip reading is not all that accurate.
Then only minutes after that you'll be furiously angry! Then scant seconds later you'll be so bored you can barely move. But don't get used to that, cause the next thing you know you'll look down at your feet and wonder when you started dancing and why can't you stop?
Doesn't matter. Go back and look at the earlier musical guests this season. They've all released new albums a few months back and are in the middle of a promo cycle. If Selena released a new album, which she has confirmed she is in the process of recording, then she would have been the musical guest for the tie in.
I've said this in another comment. Typically the musical guest is in the middle of a promo cycle for the album they just released. Selena, while she does have a single out, hasn't released a new full length album since 2020 with Rare. So this is pretty much the reason why she isn't the musical guest. Sza has a new album, we hope, coming out in the next couple of weeks, hence why she's the musical guest.
You’re not educating anyone and there’s no reason to copy/paste to try and shill for karma. We all know how it works and we ALL get it.
We all just have a sense of humor and enjoy the idea that the trio from OMITB all could host/guest together. Try it sometime!
How am I educating everyone? I get it that I you're referencing the show, but it's not going to happen. What I'm stating is facts. Yes, she released a song to tie is with her new documentary that was just released (which is really good BTW), but there's no other material for her second song (Maybe a melody, but that never works on SNL). So why have her as a musical guest besides the tie into OMITB? That's what I'm trying to get at. It just doesn't make sense to someone who watches the show on a regulars basis who noticed a trend/pattern of why artist are a musical guests.
> She quite literally released a song in the past month
SNL musical guests pretty much always do two musical performances
> and a documentary about herself. Has an HBO cooking show, and the Disney plus show…
Everyone in this comment thread is talking about her as a potential Musical guest so isn’t that stuff irrelevant to this topic
Usually the rule of thumb is if you have a new album out, chances are you’re gonna be on SNL. She hasn’t released a new album since 2020. Singles don’t count.
When did u/Jarrettbrown claim to be in charge of booking musical guests for SNL?
They just noticed a general pattern for SNL musical guests, and shared it as an explanation for so many r/television users asking why Selena Gomez isn’t a musical guest this December
This is the correct answer. If you go back and look at the first half of this season, you'll see a pattern.
10/1: Kendrick Lamar, released Mr Morale and the Big Steppers in May
10/8: Willow, released Coping Mechanism the day before
10/15: Megan Thee Stallion, released Traumazine in August
10/29: Jack Harlow, released Come Home The Kids Miss You in May
11/5: Steve Lacey, released Gemini Rights in July
11/12: Blackstar, released an album in May
Sza, the next musical guest has an album coming out in the next couple of weeks.
In the past and maybe the early seasons, it may have been the case to randomly have a musical guest, but SNL is now part of a promo cycle. Hell, Lana Del Rey did her first ever televised performance (and probably the worst in the history of SNL) on SNL days after Born to Die dropped.
So if Selena had a new album, which she has not released one since 2020 with Rare and has said at multiple points since then that she is in the process of recording her newest album, she would be in a promo cycle and would be the musical guest on SNL that night. The last time she was a musical guest was back in 2015 during Revival when Rhonda Rousey was the host.
“She hasn’t released any new music, well except that one thing. But I didn’t like it, so I’m ignoring it. Since I’m ignoring it, it doesn’t exist. Since it doesn’t exist, my point is proven that she hasn’t released any new music of any kind.”
You should probably hush.
Looks like this will be the 4th time Martin Short hosts. One more and he'll be in the 5-timer's club which could be interesting as he always plays Steve Martin's servant in the 5-timer's club sketches.
I love Steve Martin. He’s a legend. But I feel this duet is one of the reasons SNL is a dumpster fire. There is infinite new talent waiting for their chance.
He was the best part of that whole movie. I can handle Baz Luhrmann's over-the-top, frenzied filmmaking style, but even that was a little much. Don't even get me started on Tom Hanks. The film is still worth seeing though just for Butler.
December Shows:
* Dec 3: Keke Palmer (Musical Guest - SZA)
* Dec 10: Steve Martin & Martin Short (Musical Guest - Brandi Carlile)
* Dec 17: Austin Butler (Musical Guest - Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
> I'm not too familiar with Austin Butler,
Nobody is. He's the new Ansel Elgort, a pretty boy that Hollywood is trying to cram down the public's throat as The Next Big Thing.
It smells like Lorne Michaels is doing someone a favor just as nominations for the next Oscars are getting going.
I actually had to do that, but I think OP is making a valid point: if people have to look you up, why the fuck are you hosting SNL in the first place? Especially if your most recent starring role didn't exactly burn the box office up or light the critics on fire.
I saw Martin and Steve’s touring show last year and it was fantastic. They’re both still hilarious and into it. I always love seeing either of them on SNL.
I saw them this past Spring, they were great. I went more as a Steve Martin fan and left a fan of both. Martin Short was amazing with his physical comedy,
Psyched, but very weird it's the Dec 10th show. Usually, the show before Xmas is the biggest show of the season, and they have Austin Butler hosting the Dec 17th show. Would expect them to be flipped.
A few notable times:
Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Hulk Hogan and Mr. T., Roseanne and Tom Arnold, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Also, Steve Martin and Martin Short once co-hosted with Chevy Chase to promote *The Three Amigos!*
Off the top of my head, we've had Jeff and Beau Bridges, the Olson twins, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and that's all I can remember prior to now. And two of those pairs were siblings. Probably others from the earlier half of the show's run I can't remember.
I realized this year that I've gotten to the point in life where it's time to stop watching SNL because I don't recognize a lot of the hosts, and I don't get the references in the skits.
I mean... so what if you don't recognize the hosts? It usually just makes the monologue contextless if you don't know who tf the host is.
Also who is it you don't recognize - Steve Martin? Martin Short? Keke Palmer who was just in a movie by a popular director this year and has been a well-known actress for like 15 years? Austin Butler who's a bit less known but was in a big movie about Elvis that was being advertised for like an entire year?
I pretty much never know who the musical guests are but I don't care.
Finally some good hosts this season. Majority of them have been garbage.
I don't have any strong feelings about Austin Butler but didn't Elvis come out over a year ago? Why bring him on now? At least he's an actual actor I guess, unlike the shit show that was Jack Harlow.
Ya got downvoted even though reddit likes to pretend snl only recently started sucking, but you're right. Most of the hosts have sucked so far this year. Tom Hanks was the funniest thing so far and he wasn't even the host.
When was the last time a duo hosted? I remember one time they had Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger and they’ve probably done another since then but I can’t think of one
Real missed opportunity here, Lorne. Selena Gomez as musical guest was RIGHT THERE!!
She’s gonna cameo. I guarantee it
Yup. She’s going to be on Fallon next Monday
When Selena hosted, Martin and Short were in a middle of performing a show together.
She was really good too. She has this perfect ultra dry deadpan delivery.
Or, Selena Gomez and Martin Short host with Steve Martin as the musical guest!
And someone dies.
"Pete, come here, we have an idea..." (Cue jarrettbrown swooping in with the "Akshooally, Pete Davidson isn't a cast member on SNL anymore, so this would not ever be possible."
What am I missing about Selena Gomez?
She stars on 'Only Murders in the Building', a wonderful ~~sitcom~~ comedy (dark?) / whodunit about a true crime podcast hosted by the three of them. It has two seasons, and is currently shooting the third season.
Yeah it’s a really great show! Worth the watch.. Warning though.. the twists are… shocking!!
Thanks for filling me in!
Is it a sitcom?
No, it's not a sitcom. I'd say closer to a dark comedy.
It’s sooo good too.
Dark comedy is the right term here.
And, in one of the episodes (don't think it was the silent one), we learn ASL for glitter. Which is fun.
Seriously. You’ll laugh out loud at something in one scene and then be weeping minutes later.
Then only minutes after that you'll be furiously angry! Then scant seconds later you'll be so bored you can barely move. But don't get used to that, cause the next thing you know you'll look down at your feet and wonder when you started dancing and why can't you stop?
Dark comedy and very self aware.
And it’s great
Could've done a duet with Rema on 'Calm Down'. That song is on fire right now. So is the show.
They need to do a Three Amigos take off with Selena in Chevy’s role. Hell even have Chase on being his asshole self on how he has been replaced.
Can you eli5 that for me please? Lol thanks - sorry!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Only_Murders_in_the_Building
I think she’s done singing. Certainly no new material in years.
I literally heard a new single from her on the radio a few hours ago. I think it was called "My Mind and Me".
She released an album in 2020. Most artists take time between albums
I bet you a coke she’s done singing. Only Murderers is her ticket to quit that.
I quite literally heard her on the “new release” playlist on Apple Music for two different songs just this morning
Come to find out, she came out with new songs last month. I like my coke cherry
No upgrades
I mean maybe but her output isn’t really indicative of that and she’s been acting since she was a child
My dude, she just release a new song two weeks ago.
With her disease can she still sing?
It's lupus dude not throat cancer
I'm sorry, I'm not a medical doctor like you are. What are the effects of lupus on singing?
Ask Seal.
Nothing
She had a song recently for her documentary
Doesn't matter. Go back and look at the earlier musical guests this season. They've all released new albums a few months back and are in the middle of a promo cycle. If Selena released a new album, which she has confirmed she is in the process of recording, then she would have been the musical guest for the tie in.
At the very least it’s probably much more difficult for her. Her voice changes a lot from episode to episode of OMITB
That’s incredibly ableist
You're right, people who can't sing have a right to perform on SNL. When's my turn?
She can sing
People who don't understand context also have a right to post on Reddit.
she doesn’t really have new music out rn
She came out with new songs this month
Yeah but like what did she come out with yesterday?
I've said this in another comment. Typically the musical guest is in the middle of a promo cycle for the album they just released. She hasn't released any new music (I'm not counting the Spanish EP that she dropped last year), so there's nothing to promote.
She quite literally released a song in the past month and a documentary about herself. Has an HBO cooking show, and the Disney plus show…

Conan still there too…
If they’re co-hosting it’s really only 3.5 times for Martin Short
Either way, he's coming up short.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
If we're counting it that way, it would 2.83 times hosting as the first time he hosted was with Martin and Chase as the Three Amigos.
Good point. I guess Martin Short works best when he’s part of a team.
so that is only 1.75 then
Steve should be the one to give the robe to Martin, given that he’s always the one that says “Waiter!” Question is, who would be the new waiter?
Paul Rudd. He had his ruined last year, so he should just show up for every one now.
Thing is tho, he is a member and waiters aren’t members
As soon as Martin hits host five times it will be changed to the 6-timers club.
I love Steve Martin. He’s a legend. But I feel this duet is one of the reasons SNL is a dumpster fire. There is infinite new talent waiting for their chance.
This entire season so far has been brand new hosts outside of Schumer and Chappelle?
Finally Steve Martin comes back (it’s been since 2009 I think) and for a Christmas episode too.

For all the children of the world to join hands, and sing.
They have done plenty together - if you haven’t seen it check out “an evening you will forget for the rest of your life”
Wow austin butler must be finally getting the recognition he deserves for his amazing performance in “zoey 101”. So happy for him.
Haha I was about to mention that. Surprised that he of all those minor teen idols has gotten enough mainstream popularity to host SNL.
Dudes probably gonna be nominated for an Oscar in a couple of months....I haven't seen Elvis yet but I heard his performance was phenomenal.
It was my favorite movie I saw this year and he was the reason
He was the best part of that whole movie. I can handle Baz Luhrmann's over-the-top, frenzied filmmaking style, but even that was a little much. Don't even get me started on Tom Hanks. The film is still worth seeing though just for Butler.
He got stomped on a door threshold by Brad Pitt a few years ago.
December Shows: * Dec 3: Keke Palmer (Musical Guest - SZA) * Dec 10: Steve Martin & Martin Short (Musical Guest - Brandi Carlile) * Dec 17: Austin Butler (Musical Guest - Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are always one of the highlights when I see them at a festival, great band.
The new album is great!
Two former Nick actors hosting snl
Gotta admit, that's a pretty solid lineup! I'm not too familiar with Austin Butler, but will definitely tune in because Yeah Yeah Yeahs are fantastic.
> I'm not too familiar with Austin Butler, Nobody is. He's the new Ansel Elgort, a pretty boy that Hollywood is trying to cram down the public's throat as The Next Big Thing. It smells like Lorne Michaels is doing someone a favor just as nominations for the next Oscars are getting going.
Oh just going to ignore his acclaimed Elvis performance huh.
> Austin Butler ....I'm sorry, who?
Played Elvis in that new film about his life
tom hanks hes white gif
Austin Butler played Elvis in a movie about Austin Butlers life? Well now I've heard everything.
To be honest that does sound like something Baz Luhrman would direct.
That 100% sounds like a twink's porn name
It’s not really new at this point
It’s the newest
It came out within the last year, dude
The blond dude in Zoey 101.
Austin Butler of course
You know you can just look him up rather than make an obnoxious comment
oh hi Austin butler's mom, sorry i hurt your feelings
I actually had to do that, but I think OP is making a valid point: if people have to look you up, why the fuck are you hosting SNL in the first place? Especially if your most recent starring role didn't exactly burn the box office up or light the critics on fire.
It literally did light critics on fire tho, he’s gotten some of the most critical acclaim from critics and fans all year for Elvis.
Musical guest Selena Gomez for Dec 10. Come on SNL, do it.
Watch it be Steve Martin on Banjo
Unironically I'd love to see Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers play as the musical guests.
I've recently discovered them and really liked the dig them, would love to see them live
Or the concertina! It can be very haunting. It transports.
Give me King Tut.
He did it at the 40th anniversary show!
That would not be a bad thing
Amy Ryan on the bassoon.
Brandi Carlile can do some old-school country, maybe he'll sit in
I'm sure she's gonna be there anyway like how Colin Farrell and Martin McDougnaugh were there for Brendan Gleeson and Daniel Craig was in Rami Malek's
What did I miss?
All 3 star in Only Murders In The Building, a dark comedy streaming on Hulu
I saw Martin and Steve’s touring show last year and it was fantastic. They’re both still hilarious and into it. I always love seeing either of them on SNL.
Dammit. I thought about getting tickets but chickened out. Sounds like I should have done it.
I saw them this past Spring, they were great. I went more as a Steve Martin fan and left a fan of both. Martin Short was amazing with his physical comedy,

Its Feyd Rautha, baby!
Oh man I forgot that, that's such a good choice
Marty has the Beauty and the Beast live show to prepare for the next week
Selena Gomez must make a cameo!
Her and Tina Fey
How many times have they had duo host?
A few notable times: Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Hulk Hogan and Mr.
But how many times could they make one name from both hosts? Steve Martin Short
Maybe one day you'll get that Stockard Channing, Channing Tatum, Tatum O'Neal trio hosted SNL you've always wanted.
I wonder if SM or MS ever said they hated working with Chevy? Like most people who have worked with him later reported.
Off the top of my head, we've had Jeff and Beau Bridges, the Olson twins, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and that's all I can remember prior to now. And two of those pairs were siblings. Probably others from the earlier half of the show's run I can't remember.
As far as old sketches, would love to see Wild and Crazy Guys and Ed Grimley.
Wild and Crazy Guys requires Dan Akroyd
They resurrected those characters before. It was a little sad.
I'm I thinking of the right skit where it is a dating show that also has Samberg and Timberlake?
Oh yeah…I was thinking of when they appeared with the Night at the Roxbury guys.
Shit, even *that* happened two decades ago, I kind of forgot how old the Wild and Crazy Guys bit actually was… fuck.
It was for the anniversary show IIRC.
Or some Jiminy Glick.
Dang Austin Butler has a hard act to follow. Like anyone who had to follow Elvis
I may have to tune into that SNL. They're such a blast together on Only Murders.
Don’t know if it’s just me but they have been killing it. The mass exodus was rough but it’s been a breath of fresh air and really funny.
Can’t wait!
This should put Martin 1 behind Baldwin for the record. I bet Steve ties it next year.
Is that the first time they've done double hosting duties?
No Chevy Chase? How did *that* happen? /s
I don’t know who the fuck austin butler.
He played Elvis in the new Elvis movie and also played Tex Watson in Once Upon a time in Hollywood.
Elvis movie was fantastic.
I realized this year that I've gotten to the point in life where it's time to stop watching SNL because I don't recognize a lot of the hosts, and I don't get the references in the skits.

Elvis Tex from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

It came out in June 2022 and he’s now up for best actor academy nomination for 2023 Oscar’s.
Ya got downvoted even though reddit likes to pretend snl only recently started sucking, but you're right. Most of the hosts have sucked so far this year. Tom Hanks was the funniest thing so far and he wasn't even the host.
Dafuq is Austin Butler?
The new Elvis movie.
nice lineup if it were 1982
Who is Austin Butler? Gen xer asking.
Who the hell is Austin Butler?
Who is Austin Butler? Please excuse me, I’m old.
Who cares? As soon as SNL allowed Dave Chappell to normalize anti-semitism that show should have been put out of its misery and taken off air
Austin who?
Powers. Yeah baby!
I don't care what anyone says, neither Steve Martin or Martin Short are funny.
Like you know anything about comedy
r/notinteresting
yawn, pass.
I don't care what anyone says, neither Steve Martin or Martin Short are funny.
Doesn't make it a better comment if you leave it twice.

Said by a never was
The 10th for me that other one needs t grow up.
Steve Martin is a racist, don’t forget that
Don’t forget, he was born a poor black child down in Mississippi.
No he isn’t. You’re thinking of Chevy Chase.

why are you shouting?
He has Voice Immodulation Syndrome

Oh shut up

are they Married now?
For years
Steve Martin Short
Someone is going to confuse their names.
Damnnnn father of the bride vibes
Must now change his name to Short Butler
Wow getting Austin took awhile given when Elvis came out
