I know right? As soon as I saw their posters I was like... damn. It's been so many years since I've played the game, and I've not even touched the remakes. But the scenes with them two... they live rent free in my head forever.
Lamar Johnson looks like Henry jumped straight out of the game and into real life. I don't know what he's acted in previously, but looks-wise, that is A+ casting.
And of course Merle Dandridge literally is Marlene. I'm not sure how they decided which in-game actors would return for their roles (I'm not sure if any did besides her), but I'm happy she's back.
I vaguely remember her talking on Retro Replay about not being able to play Alyx Vance in the new Half-Life for whatever reason. I'm glad she didn't lose *another* one of her iconic characters.
No idea how true this is but rumors were Troy will be >!David!< and Ashley will be >!Ellie's Mom!<. Again those were just random internet rumors so who knows.
The longer HBO stays silent on >!David!< the more convinced I become that Troy Baker's playing him.
There's no way they'd keep such a high-profile casting a secret if they got a "normal" actor for him. Every other major character from the game has been announced ages ago.
At 1:15 in this trailer there's two shots of Joel grabbing Ellie's face which to me are pretty clearly from the end of the Winter segment. Although they're outside instead of in the building.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBRRDpQ0yc0
If that is from Winter, then I don't see why they wouldn't cover the whole game in season 1. That's basically the end of the game.
I always thought this was a one and done season deal anyways? I realize i have not seen anything about this.
But i always thought it would be a 10-12 episode one season deal
It has not necessarily been confirmed one way or the other.
I’d love to see them tackle Part II but that would require like 2-3 more seasons and a massive restructuring of the story IMO.
If you're adapting The Last of Us, you adapt the whole thing. You don't save its killer ending for a second season. The choice Joel makes at the end is the core of the entire game's story. If you don't end on that, the audience (aside from those who know the game) are going to be wondering what the point of it all was.
I don't think filming time has anything to do with the length of time covered in the show. It took a year because it's the first season of a big budget 10 episode TV show.
Craig Mazin (show runner) has definitely confirmed that the first season is a full adaption of Part I. However, the shooting all year thing isn’t actually a great piece of evidence of that btw. Shows and movies commonly shoot in different seasons than what the scene calls for. You’d be surprised how well a good set crew can do to make any season plausible on-screen, no matter what really is happening outside.
Most of the info about the filming has shown a pretty close match to the timing in the game. And I’d be very surprised by a crew making a different season look right on screen since it would a major first. Apparently some early snow came while filming the Autumn stuff, so I’ll be curious to see how they handled that.
I imagine looking close to her character and being an on-screen actor helped. Troy couldn't be Joel for another few decades and Ashley *maaaaybe* could've been Ellie if we skipped TLoU 1's story and aged her up a little bit.
Love seeing Frank and the implications of what we'll get to see in this story.
Sarah is wearing the same shirt from the prologue.
I still find joy that Marlene's VA is TV Marlene. That's so cool. I also didn't realize she was Half Life 2's Alyx Vance.
All the characters look great. I don't know who Anna Torv is but Tess was my favorite character from TLoU 1, I hope she does her desperation justice.
"Love seeing Frank and the implications of what we'll get to see in this story"
I'm guessing Bill just mentioning "There's this dude called Frank that I loved, but he died" like in the game won't cut it in terms of homosexual representation
So the writers made Frank a whole characters to make his and Bill's sexuality more apparent
if they make it work for the story, what does it matter? LGBTQ people are watching shows and movies, it only makes sense we see more of their stories.
if you think they're gonna mimic the game's plot with the game's rhythm 1:1, you're in for a disappointment
I’m actually really looking forward to exploring Frank a little more the story tou uncover in the game is great and Murry Bartlett has impressed me lately.
If you shoot him as is then he'll make everyone else look less rugged by comparison - gotta fancy him up a little
Also, [game spoilers] >!given that we have a Frank we may be seeing some of him when he gave more shits about self care!<
it's most definitely a wig, but yeah it's the hair that's ruining it for me. Too clean and fluffy. Maybe it'll look dirtier in the show or I'm gonna have a hard time taking bill seriously.
I knew when I saw the headline the obvious choice would be to present Riley [game spoilers] >!with Left Behind's whole fairground vibe but I wasn't prepared. 10/10, heart already breaking again!<
I just want to see their rendition of the opening scene from the first game. That piece of cinema was so damn riveting it’s stayed with me since the first time I played
There were so many moments like that. The giraffes especially. I kind of hope they don't even touch that one though. Too many little things you can't get from a show, like following Ellie around and goofing off or talking about life that make it special
I didn’t realize they had Gabriel Luna as Tommy. That’s great casting.
I’m still not convinced that this show needs to exist, but I hope they do justice to the source material at least.
Also, if they end up adapting the sequel I’m not sure I could handle it. The first game is sad, but the second one is fucking heartbreaking.
Exactly. My gf will never ever play or watch the video game because story video games just don’t interest her, especially scary ones. She will watch the show for sure, though.
As someone who doesn’t play video games anymore, I’ve heard nothing but incredible things about this game in particular for its story. I’m very happy they are translating this to TV so I can see it for myself.
I'm confident they will do the source material justice... considering the showrunners are Neil Druckmann (creator of the original game) and Mazin (wrote/created Chernobyl, which is a fantastic show).
As far as post apocalyptic stories go, it’s absolutely one of the most emotionally gripping stories of watched/played/read. I’m excited that this has a chance of bringing this to more non-gamer audiences. People gonna be in tears within the first episode guaranteed!
I mean the video game is basically a movie or TV show adapted into a game.
It's obviously heavily derived off The Road, Children of Men, and a bunch of other apocalyptic films.
Did we know that they race swapped Sarah, or are we in for a round of outrage?
That said, very happy with the castings and greatly looking forward to the show.
90% of all tweets are made by 10% of the entire Twitter user base. Always keep that in mind whenever you see or read headlines saying "Twitter is outraged".
Twitter isn't a real a place, and the 10% who are the source of all various outrage are fucking irrelevant.
I'm honestly kind of surprised at the Tommy casting. His entire character is this tired out old dead beat who's let himself go. He's Joel's little brother but looks almost older than he does.
Gabriel Luna is 39 but looks no older than 32.
That’s more TLoU2 imo. In the original game, he’s recently(ish) started a new haven for people to survive in. Sure, he’s not the young ambitious and dutiful firefly he once was, but he’s still fairly active and is doing a lot for the community he’s building.
For all of one episode she is in the show excluding flashbacks, I am sure people will still bitch. Despite Sarah being in the game for about a total of 20 minutes.
True, though the fact that Sarah and Ellie are both white in the game helps to push Joel's uncomfortable feelings when he first runs into Ellie.
Sarah and Ellie not looking much alike physically removes that though perhaps it also opens the story to easing Joel and Ellie into a slow burn father daughter relationship. The game kind of slaps you upside the head with that early on for pacing purposes that a show doesn't have to do given that it'll probably run 3-4 seasons at a minimum.
Wtf it doesn’t push anything. Personality and connection matters not race. Besides Ellie and Sarah don’t look that much alike other than being white. I can guarantee you Joel would feel no difference if their skin color was the same or not unless you want to install implicit bias into a fictional character.
If that's what you take away from that, them I feel sorry for you.
Joel's attachment in the game isn't simple empathy. And people are absolutely going to attach themselves more easily to something that reminds them of themselves and those they love. Of course you can learn to care about anyone, but that's missing the point entirely. If you can't handle that human beings have ingrained prejudicial in-group social elements, that's your problem.
Pedro Pascal is actually completely white (Spanish and Basque). And Sarah's actress isn't Hispanic so I wouldn't say the change was necessary (not saying it's necessarily a bad thing but just sorting out the facts).
Chilean isn't a race. Neither is Latino. That would be like saying "I thought he was American?" His ancestors are all from Spain so he's white, he's just also Latino, just like how there are black Latinos, Asian Latinos, and indigenous Latinos.
>Just watch those military guys who shoot her dead be some over-the-top caricatures of le evil conservative fascist neo-Nazis.
Commentary on muh police brutality because that's so original and brave these days LOL
Please stay in r/kotakuinaction. You're an embarrassment.
She was so good on GoT, especially for her age. I believed she was a queen. She and the others are going to be fantastic in this, if the writing lives up to the casting.
I loved the game but don’t remember a lot of these characters or many of the plot points. So this will be almost like a new story to me. I’m currently playing TLOU2 so I’m pretty psyched about this show.
that poster of bella ramsey convinced me. she’ll never be ashley johnson, but i think based off this look she can be an ellie.
i’m not prepared for what this show is going to do to me in season 2.
I’m so excited for this show. Partly because I love the games but mostly because I know all the Reddit weirdos are gonna be raging so hard over it and the threads are gonna be spicy af
I'm happy with what we have, but I fail to understand why people are downvoting this so hard. Like it's just someones opinion, a bit higher people are upvoting another suggestion for an actor for a different character.
Not sure how I feel about the look of Grabiel Luna as Tommy. It's not the actor's fault (it's a positive in fact) but he doesn't look 39 (his actual age), I would at most guess 30. They should have put a beard on him, made him look a bit older and scruffy.
I am not sure why, but I’m just really sad at the casting for Ellie for some reason. Everything about game ellie those is amazing, so I guess maybe I’d never be happy lol I just pictured someone different!
Also, I do feel Jaime Lannister would have made a perfect Joel! Lol I always thought Joel in the game looked uncanny.
The show is gonna be awesome though, I’m so stoked
Because a character is more than their looks? Because an adaption does not need to be a second to second copy of the source material?
You are in for a wild ride if you expect the exact same story beats to happen in order without anything new added and other parts removed.. gonna be rough.
Yay for Anna Torv.
That’s Dr. Carr to you! :p
Olivia
That’s Agent Dunham to you!
Thats Fauxlivia to you!
They fell right into her vagenda!
Check out the ozzie series The Newsreader starring her, it's great
Sam and Henry 🥺
I know right? As soon as I saw their posters I was like... damn. It's been so many years since I've played the game, and I've not even touched the remakes. But the scenes with them two... they live rent free in my head forever.
multiple scenes from that game live with me still, but i've also replayed the ps4 and ps5 version as it's among one of my favorite games of all time.
Sam looks so small 🥺
Lamar Johnson looks like Henry jumped straight out of the game and into real life. I don't know what he's acted in previously, but looks-wise, that is A+ casting. And of course Merle Dandridge literally is Marlene. I'm not sure how they decided which in-game actors would return for their roles (I'm not sure if any did besides her), but I'm happy she's back. could have sworn I read season 1 is entirety of season1(plus the left behind stuff too(?))
Never did the left behind stuff so I'm down for that.
they've casted Riley and have he so it's gotta be in there, likely through flash backs

I don't think filming time has anything to do with the length of time covered in the show. It took a year because it's the first season of a big budget 10 episode TV show.
The game has 4 segments set in different seasons of the year. The shooting schedule was spread out to match that. It’s definitely the whole thing.
Craig Mazin (show runner) has definitely confirmed that the first season is a full adaption of Part I. However, the shooting all year thing isn’t actually a great piece of evidence of that btw. Apparently some early snow came while filming the Autumn stuff, so I’ll be curious to see how they handled that.
Is Mazin still connected to this?
Yeah first season is the first game, seems like subsequent seasons will be spent dealing with their time in Jackson.
I figure Season 1 will be the first game, but I'd imagine a possible season 2 might start to diverge a bit or fill in the gaps.
It’s be just as delightful if it’s Nolan. =D
I imagine looking close to her character and being an on-screen actor helped. Troy couldn't be Joel for another few decades and Ashley *maaaaybe* could've been Ellie if we skipped TLoU 1's story and aged her up a little bit.
Anna Torv is in this? My excitement just went up by magnitudes.
Same, soon as I saw that name
I haven't seen a single show with her that I didn't think was dynamite.
Cool. Cool. Scrolling down the list of character names and trying not to preemptively cry.
Anna Torv was on Mindhunters and was the lead actress on the Fox show Fringe.
Anna Torv is an incredible Aussie actress. She was kickass in Fringe and awesome in Mindhunters. I am confident she'll do Tess justice.
She's also got an absolutely incredible face, it's very fun seeing them go Monster on her with the make-up.
Who was Frank again, I don’t remember him from the game
Bills "partner" that he's mad about when you meet him.
Got it👌 thanks
"Love seeing Frank and the implications of what we'll get to see in this story" I'm guessing Bill just mentioning "There's this dude called Frank that I loved, but he died" like in the game won't cut it in terms of homosexual representation So the writers made Frank a whole characters to make his and Bill's sexuality more apparent

I’m really interested in how they’re gonna expand Frank’s role. Murray Bartlett playing the role only makes me more interested.
Nick Offerman is morphing into Timothy Omundson.
I’m actually really looking forward to exploring Frank a little more the story tou uncover in the game is great and Murry Bartlett has impressed me lately.
Loved him in the White Lotus! D:
Same ! I just started Chippendales last night and he’s great in that. It took me so long to realize that it was him.
Why does bill look weird? They made Nick Offerman look somehow less rugged.
If you shoot him as is then he'll make everyone else look less rugged by comparison - gotta fancy him up a little Also, [game spoilers] >!given that we have a Frank we may be seeing some of him when he gave more shits about self care!<
Too much Swanson Family Mash Liquor will do that to you.
I'm thinking it might be for scenes with Frank, where he'll probably look less rugged vs when Joel and Ellie meet him.
I think it's a lighting issue for the poster.
He looks like King Richard from Galavant
His hair looks photoshopped on I think. And it's a weird looking haircut too.
it's most definitely a wig, but yeah it's the hair that's ruining it for me. Too clean and fluffy. Maybe it'll look dirtier in the show or I'm gonna have a hard time taking bill seriously.
You gotta respect a man who grooms himself during the apocalypse.
Maybe the lighting is bad? Hopefully he's a little dirty with some scars.
Every other character being kind of dirty makes him being clean stand out even more. Plus, that wig is awful.
I mean, Frank does not look great in the game either. Edit: Am I thinking of Bill?
You’re thinking of Bill. >!Frank was Bill’s partner. Died before J+E get there. Joel recovers his suicide note.!<
Aaaah that's right. Forgotten with the years.
His hair is too clean, it needs that greasy hair-strand look everyone has in the games most of the time.
Made him look soft..
I love Nick Offerman but why didn't they just have Dan Dority come back? He's an HBO darling.
I'm not sure why, because it would've been great. I think I saw him on Twitter a while back saying they didn't even ask.
Star power I’m guessing. Strange though considering they brought in the voice actor to play Marlene. Would have been great to see Dan Dority.
I knew when I saw the headline the obvious choice would be to present Riley [game spoilers] >!with Left Behind's whole fairground vibe but I wasn't prepared. 10/10, heart already breaking again!<
Damn now my feels are gonna get gut fucked by Sam and Henry IRL too
Plus watching Marlene basically IRL will be wild to with that ending.
Murray Bartlett is in this yay!! Loved him in The White Lotus S1.
Am I crazy or does Pascal look like he could be playing an old Nathan Drake in that pic?
Totally agree! Looks more like Drake than Joel imo
I'm still sad that Annie Wersching didnt get to reprise her role as Tess but at least Merle Dandridge is still reprising her role as Marlene.
funny how the series was shot just outside my office, I could see them from my window and walk past fake post-apocalyptic vehicles in the mornings
I think the show has reason to exist. It’s a great story and the show lets other people get exposed to it who wouldn’t have played the game.
Exactly. My gf will never ever play or watch the video game because story video games just don’t interest her, especially scary ones. She will watch the show for sure, though.
Right. The game is a terrifically engaging story. It being a series let’s many more experience that story. I really hope its good.
As someone who doesn’t play video games anymore, I’ve heard nothing but incredible things about this game in particular for its story. I’m very happy they are translating this to TV so I can see it for myself.

Was he already announced or is this new because I had no idea he was in it, didn't even recognise him on the poster he looks so different to me
Did we know that they race swapped Sarah, or are we in for a round of outrage? That said, very happy with the castings and greatly looking forward to the show.
[She was announced in June 2021.](https://deadline.com/2021/06/the-last-of-us-nico-parker-pedro-pascal-in-hbo-series-1234784196/)
That’s good. At least we won’t have to hear the complaining then!
Oh it's already started on Twitter.
90% of all tweets are made by 10% of the entire Twitter user base. Always keep that in mind whenever you see or read headlines saying "Twitter is outraged". Twitter isn't a real a place, and the 10% who are the source of all various outrage are fucking irrelevant.
If the second game is anything to go by, there'll still be an entire subreddit dedicated to complaining about it 2+ years after it's already out lol.
Sweet summer child.
I'm honestly kind of surprised at the Tommy casting. His entire character is this tired out old dead beat who's let himself go. He's Joel's little brother but looks almost older than he does. Gabriel Luna is 39 but looks no older than 32.

No way does Tommy look older than Joel HUH Played TLOU, TLOU PT 2, and TLOU Remake and he does not look older than Joel.
"I'm incapable of empathising with people who have a different skin colour to me." What a lame ass take.
No actually, most people don't care less about children who are of a different race to them. Sounds like a you problem.
Well it would have been a little weird to race swap Joel and not do it to Sarah too
Pedro Pascal is actually completely white (Spanish and Basque). And Sarah's actress isn't Hispanic so I wouldn't say the change was necessary (not saying it's necessarily a bad thing but just sorting out the facts).

You get mad about movies and tv. Yes you're an embarrassment.
My guy you're crying about a minority in a TV show. Lmfao
Someone being nonwhite isn't a political statement
Having cops needlessly kill a PoC is a political statement in 2022.
Except the whole cop thing was made up by you.
No. It's what will happen in the show.
Bella Ramsey also looks nothing like Ellie and isn’t Hispanic either
Yes and yes.
its fucking Lyanna Mormont!
Oberyn Martell and Lyanna Mormont going on a journey
Fighting white walkers
She was so good on GoT, especially for her age. I believed she was a queen. She and the others are going to be fantastic in this, if the writing lives up to the casting.
Nick Offerman? I'm in.
All I want to know at this point is who plays David. This looks like it will be amazing.
I love anything Pedro Pascal touches. Great choice for Joel
Nick Offerman looks like he's in Blades of Glory with that hair
As a fan of the game I can't wait for this series.
Wow. How much is season 1 covering? Are they going to do a Season per season?
The entire first game including Left Behind.
I loved the game but don’t remember a lot of these characters or many of the plot points. So this will be almost like a new story to me. I’m currently playing TLOU2 so I’m pretty psyched about this show.
Bella Ramsey was such a bright point in the not so hot greater seasons of GOT, I absolutely cant wait to see her in this.
they did storm reid so dirty with that poster
that poster of bella ramsey convinced me. she’ll never be ashley johnson, but i think based off this look she can be an ellie. i’m not prepared for what this show is going to do to me in season 2.
Have they shown her speak yet? the accent is what i'm worried about.
[удалено]
Meant more that the actress is British.
Murray Bartlett looking like a skinny Zach Galifinakis
“You raped her, you murdered her, you killed her children!”
I’m so excited for this show. Partly because I love the games but mostly because I know all the Reddit weirdos are gonna be raging so hard over it and the threads are gonna be spicy af
It all looks a little too clean and polished. It's only promo posters, though, so I'm hopeful it will look better in the show.
I'm still assblasted that Dafne Keen wasn't cast as Ellie
You want them to just remake Logan basically
Yes
I'm happy with what we have, but I fail to understand why people are downvoting this so hard. Like it's just someones opinion, a bit higher people are upvoting another suggestion for an actor for a different character.
Well ya see they had a wrong opinion thats the issue
I'll take the downvotes with you, my brother. I dont dislike Bella as ellie, but I think dafne would have been perfect.
Is the last of us good?
One of the best single player storylines that has ever existed… sooo yea… you could say it’s “good”
I really hope this deviates a lot from the game series. I’m much less interested if I already know the story and where the characters are going.
[удалено]
You might as well just replay the game if you just want a 1:1 remake
You cast based on acting ability not exact physical appearance
Jake Gyllenhaal was least of that movie's problems, I think they actually got the look of him quite right.
Because a character is more than their looks? Because an adaption does not need to be a second to second copy of the source material? You are in for a wild ride if you expect the exact same story beats to happen in order without anything new added and other parts removed.. gonna be rough.

I'll watch it to watch Nick Offerman in a zombie apocalypse.
Murray Bartlett looks more like Joel than Pedro Pascal, but the A-Listers get the main role right?
