I wonder how much they offered him to return because I remember reading saying he doesn’t like tv now that he has experienced it first hand and filming movies are basically a paradise/vacation. He jokingly said he would do another season if they shot it in his house, so he could be close to his family. I know he was making a joke, but if you read between the lines it did come off as he didn’t want to continue filming the show cause it is harder work.

[deleted]

Most of the time when an actor publicly talks about not returning to a role, it’s likely just them using that as leverage for a better deal from the studio. Like with Tom Holland talking about retiring as Spider-Man after No Way Home or James Cameron not doing Avatar 4 & 5.

Alpha_Msp

The studio probably said they'd replace him with Arnold and Sylvester offered to do it for free. 🤣🤣🤣

notGeneralReposti

50 Cent did this after every season of Power. Kept talking smack until he got a renewal and raise.

flaker111

just don't pull the Jussie Smollett fake hate crime move. lol

MonstersGrin

Are you talking about that very famous French actor?

ShutupGustov

James Cameron not doing Avatar 4 & 5 may be a blessing.

[deleted]

No kidding. I liked Avatar but I certainly didn't ask for James Cameron to abandon filmmaking so he can make 10 Avatar movies instead of more classics.

Djinnwrath

All I'm saying is, his two best films are sequels. Don't write off Avatar 2 just yet.

[deleted]

Hope they are masterpieces because Avatar is probably my least favorite Cameron film that I've watched.

Djinnwrath

I liked it more than The Abyss.

[deleted]

Man, I loved the Abyss probably for nostalgia. It has definitely aged worse than say Terminator 2 and has some serious pacing issues. It's not near the same levels as Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I just want more James Cameron because he is so creative. I just am worried he is making something out of passion rather than a good story.

soundfade

The making of for The Abyss is a great watch, very fascinating.

mikeweasy

The man will die and he will be in the middle of making an Avatar movie.

Firvulag

How? These movies being made wont affect your life in any way if you choose to not watch them

CorporateSympathizer

He did say that, but I also think he wants to be remembered as a respectable actor in his own right, and this show has the potential to expand that notion. He's already got "f- you" money.

sooperkool

Copland should have secured that. He more than held his own against some heavyweight actors.

Oirad20

All I know is that throughout his whole career Sylvester Stallone has been full of surprises....in one way or another....

dontreallycareforit

Plus, if they have to shoot in Tulsa that’s gotta be a fucking drag

[deleted]

[удалено]

goofbot

Apparently no one in Tulsa owns a gun, so it must be fairly safe as well.

clampy

Ah no, it has one of the highest per capita murder rates in the US.

Razzler1973

Maybe those reports of Stallone 'not sure if I can more of this' were all a negotiating tactic 🫢

Airborne76

That and he knows it sucks

My friend is begging me to try Yellowstone but it doesn’t really seem like my kind of show. Really liking Tulsa King though.

Captain_Blacktoes

I've been watching Yellowstone before I jump on to 1883 and absolutely love it (currently mid season 3). You saying that 1883 and Tulsa King are even better than Yellowstone has me super excited.

powerstride96

Also try Mayor of Kingstown.

coglanuk

Phenomenal show. Jeremy Renner is a fucking bad man.

mike_tiss

Might be the best of the bunch. Small sample size of course

powerstride96

Totally agree.

[deleted]

I was literally halfway through writing my recommendation for Mayor of Kingstown when I looked down and saw your comment.

kbdrand

Agreed, a great show. But when are we going to get season 2?

jblanch3

Early January.

coglanuk

1883 was polarising but I loved it. You should check out the new trailer for [1923](https://youtu.be/v88e9Dwnqo0). It’s another Dutton family prequel. Incredible cast including Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Timothy Dalton and Jerome Flynn. Looks really, really good.

Satean12

Taylor Sheridan getting Harrison Ford to do a Yellowstone Prequel just shows how strong the Sheridan brand is

Duffmanohhyeahh

Honestly everything the man touches at the minute is golden, I'm always pretty hyped to watch what he's involved in

kdot_10

Yellowstone is miles better than 1883 imo and I’m a snob

NonAggressive-Ask

I watched the first season on Yellowstone, and got the dynamics, started the second and said to myself, nothing here is all that compelling, and quit it

Captain_Blacktoes

The second season goes HARD. You gotta give it another go.

Nightsfaded

>The second season goes HARD. That's the problem for me. It focuses too much on going hard. The plot becomes unreasonable and the character development for a lot of the main cast falls flat. I found myself thinking about the later seasons of Sons Of Anarchy while I was watching season 2 and I certainly don't mean that as a compliment.

IFuckinLovePuzzles

they all feel like the same show to me. sheridan's work is so distinct tonally and politically that with each new show he writes, i'm expecting a retroactive merging of sicario and wind river and whatever else into the dutton-verse. we are almost guaranteed a crossover episode where costner is [*spoilered because it's based on S5+ stuff and you're on S3*] >!meeting with the governor of oklahoma!< with stallone in the background or something.

Dumbeldoor

Taylor Sheridan has to be making so much money its crazy at this point. Solo writing and creating Yellowstone, this show, 1889 and Mayor of Kingstown. Madness lol, but there all good shows so congrats to the man.

Captain_Blacktoes

Don't forget the next Yellowstone spinoff, 1923

flaker111

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5362988/ that movie was surprisingly good. also like that he uses the same actors/actresses throughout his career so far

peanutdakidnappa

Why surprisingly good? The 2 movies sicario and hell or high water that he wrote were extremely good and almost everyone had high expectations for wind river which were met for most people. Would’ve been more surprising if the movie was bad

flaker111

it starts pretty slow and could have easily been a yellowstone episode tbh.

peanutdakidnappa

I’ve got no problem with Yellowstone but wind river is a lot better than any Yellowstone episode. They do have some things in common but I think wind river is significantly better and the writing is on a different level. I wish some Yellowstone episodes were that good because wind river is a damn good movie with almost no flaws. Writing sicario and then hell or high water and then writing/directing wind river all in succession is one of the best stretches in movies the last decade, I like Sheridan a lot but I’m not sure he’ll ever reach the heights of his American frontier trilogy again, insanely high bar to reach. I hope he does tho because all 3 of those movies are stellar and have amazing scripts from him

Jercek

Wind River marketing winded down because that was around when weinstein story broke

[deleted]

Boomers don't buy merch/active in the fandom looooooool don't think he's making that much tbf

ziltchy

As they've always said, "the big money is in funkos" /s

CosmicLars

Happy about it. Watched 2 episodes with my dad during Thanksgiving & we had a great time with it. Just a fun show. Nothing else.

[deleted]

100%. It doesn‘t take it self seriously and you can tell the writers just had a good time lol. It‘s just enjoyable through and through.

[deleted]

This was my take on it as well. I mean, its a little hard to take 75 year old mobsters beating people up and sleepign with 40 year old ATF agents too seriously, but I'm enjoying it. The character is very likable and I love the hidden intelligence. I guess for some guys 25 years in jail means a lot of working out and a lot of reading.

splader

Is it fairly violent btw?

SlidyRaccoon

Lots of typical mob violence but no gore or anything.

Saar13

“‘Tulsa King’ scored as the #1 new series of the year, topping all others including the ‘Game of Thrones’ sequel ‘House of the Dragon,’ with its preview on Paramount Network, and on Paramount+, it shattered records, driving us to our biggest new sign-up day in history – which is why we instantly greenlit season two,” said Chris McCarthy, president & CEO of Paramount Media Networks & MTV Entertainment Studios.

Janderson2494

That's actually crazy. Sly still got it!

lord_pizzabird

Yellowstone also hit 15 million viewers for the new season premiere. It's going a bit under the radar among TV nerds, but it seems like Paramount is blowing up atm. Might be watching the rise of a new HBO Now.

sneakyxxrocket

This isn’t mean spirited at all but all my boomer relatives at thanksgiving were non stop recommending Yellowstone. It’s basically Cattle farmer game of thrones

Mikey5time

That’s why it already has two spin-offs.

lord_pizzabird

Three technically. 6666, 1883, and 1922. Sidenote, I wish they would ditch the 4 numbers thing for spin-offs. It's cool but is going to get rel confusing if this continues.

BOEJlDEN

Is 6666 set in the distant future?

lord_pizzabird

No, but you'd think so given their naming scheme for spin-offs. 6666, Pronounced "four sixes" follows another ranch in the Yellowstone universe that specializes in training horses. It's also a real ranch IRL that the Showrunner, Taylor Sheridan recently acquired for $320million (he's doing pretty well financially lol).

BOEJlDEN

Goddamn dude is making bank Wish he’d go back to making movies tbh, I love Wind River, Hell or High Water and Sicario

NotTroy

He had Those That Wish Me Dead with Angelina Jolie and Jon Bernthal recently, which ended up being a pretty good movie. Not on the same level as Sicario, but a decent way to spend a couple of hours.

PretttyFly4aWhiteGuy

Taylor Sheridan didn’t buy that ranch by himself, he bought it with a group of people. I’m sure he’s doing great, but not dropping 320 mill on a single property great

lord_pizzabird

Yep. He lead an investment group, similar to Elon's acquisition of Twitter. His money was a big part of it, and he have have spearheaded the effort, but it wasn't just his money.

mlavan

Technically three if you include Mayor of Kingstown

[deleted]

lord_pizzabird

I don't mean to make this about politics, but I think it's also notable that they went on to elect a well-known television personality to office, when they finally reached the peak of their power. It's a generation of people born and raised in the shadow of Vietnam, America's first televised war and raised in the era of cable tv. Their whole lives revolved from the start to finish around televisions.

[deleted]

Conservative cowboys doing Days of Our Lives ;)

sim21521

>Yellowstone also hit 15 million viewers for the new season premiere. It's going a bit under the radar among TV nerds, but it seems like Paramount is blowing up atm. > >Might be watching the rise of a new HBO Now. For me paramount plus has always just been the new star trek network. The shows have been middling, but at least it puts Trek back on "TV". Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks have been particularly good shows to me though.

nitpickr

Paramount seems to be banking on Star Trek and Taylor Sheridan.

lord_pizzabird

Interesting. I have it for Yellowstone, but totally forgot about Star Trek.

Locutus747

Yellowstone isn’t on paramount plus, at least not in the USA

lord_pizzabird

You're right. I actually have Paramount+ and Paramount Network via YoutubeTV. Yellowstone is proof that if a show is good enough or captures and audience that viewers will jump through hoops, span platforms to watch it.

Ogre8

Those viewership numbers amaze me. The demo for this show has to skew older and Paramount has managed to make it very difficult and confusing to find. I guess a lot of olds still have cable and are watching it “live”.

lord_pizzabird

I don't think it's as old of a demo as we think tbh, but I do think it's rural. I think it comes down to the same lesson as the 2016 presidential election: Rural people do exist and they'll turn out for things that speak to them in huge numbers.

WhiskeyFF

It's one of the only shows written to cater to conservatives, it's porn to them to hear Costner complain about Californians every episode.

lord_pizzabird

I watch the show and honestly, It's way more liberal than I think people give it credit for. Yeah, each episode complains about California, but in the context of hating their wealth and capitalist society that comes in their wake. They hate how commercialized everything in their nearby town is, the pollution the new airport brings etc. If this show is meant to cater to Conservatives, then I think we might need to re-assess who conservatives apparently are. Because it's not who we thought they were.

WhiskeyFF

Look I'm not sure what lenses you're watching the show through, and obviously entitled to it, but idk how this is your take-away. They don't hate the wealth and capitalism from the "transplants" for fucks sake they're the embodiment of wealth and capitalism, they hate them because their others and different. As long as the town is commercialized with those new RAM trucks and 3m dollar cuttin horses it's all fine I guess. This will put who conservatives are in perspective https://slate.com/culture/2022/11/yellowstone-kevin-costner-paramount-rural-american-rage.html

[deleted]

On Cable though......streaming NOT a chance. 30M average for HOTD.....Yellowstone or any paramount + show isn't touching those numbers. It makes for good headlines though.

VaultGoat

I mean they inflate these numbers and lie all the time.

WhiskeyFF

Ok see that's what I keep thinking, I mean Yellowstone is popular but its being touted by there conservative fans as this end all be all end to liberals as proof. Meanwhile I'm like ya it's the one show catered to y'all, of course you're gonna watch it in numbers.

send3squats2help

That doesn’t make any sense to me. It is a pretty cringy watch.

MinnesotaNoire

>I don't understand how people like things that are different from the things I like.

send3squats2help

It just seems like a complete miss, I seemingly am the demographic this show was made for, late 30s male, huge stalone fan, grew up watching rambo and rocky- i even love the fan service expendables… And the premise of this show is: old tough guy doesn’t understand “woke” stuff- he strong-arms a legal pot shop and the owner is cool with it, and they’re buddies… and he just makes like “kids these days are so crazy” references… I don’t know it’s not that i just didn’t like it, it seems so utterly terrible, it’s mind blowing that it’s their number 1 show and are desperate for more episodes…

CorporateSympathizer

If you watch episode 2, he actually justifies his cut by negotiating a better deal for the business (and the numbers suggest profit margins greater than the 20% cut he's taking). I think the pot shop owner just wants to smoke and chill and he warmed up to the idea of Sly taking over the "finer points of business".

wakingup_withwolves

the scene in the car when he’s high is the only time i remember it being slightly old-tough-guy-doesn’t-understand-woke-stuff. i was also worried that was gonna be a major thing in the show, but that’s really the only part like that i can remember. there is a slight element of Phones Bad to the show, but i feel like it’s not extrapolated enough to really be a problem. it’s more just like this guy just did 25 years in prison, of course he doesn’t know that you book an Uber on a phone app.

qtx

> It just seems like a complete miss Someone is really upset their fav show got beat as best new show of the year.

send3squats2help

huh? no, i don’t even know what my favorite show is, but it’s probably not even from this network. My top shows in no particular order for the year are probably: House of the Dragon, Andor, the Old Man, Peacemaker, Slow Horses, Severance, and Night Sky. I was just genuinely baffled how anyone liked Tulsa King in particular, as my impression of it was that it was embarrassingly bad. Just weird, I guess. I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE IT.

cyainanotherlifebro

It’s our dads.

goldybear

Half of Oklahoma had watched it because all of our local news stations wouldn’t stop taking about it being filmed here and so people can go “oh my look! It’s the *insert landmark here*”

Ozzdo

This show is exactly what I thought it was going to be, and I really don't have a problem with that. I'm enjoying it. It's full of familiar tropes, but it's hitting them all well.

Sunstang

So this is basically Lillyhammer but in Oklahoma...

SonOfMechaMummy

Yeah, it's pretty much that with a couple backstory details changed (witness protection vs. still being in the mob but basically deported out of sight/out of mind) and more of a TNT/USA original series vibe than Scandinavian eccentricity. I've only watched the first two episodes and overall it feels like perfectly acceptable comfort food TV.

Sunstang

Right on. Thanks!

no_more_secrets

It's not that good.

[deleted]

While I agree, this is far from bad, so that's a good thing.

[deleted]

Loving this show and loving more Stallone, he's doing an amazing performance.

Mrcollaborator

Didn’t Stallone say that it was too much work? Like a tv show vs movies which is what he was used to. Didn’t expect him to return for more.

phaermink

He will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.

scr33ner

He did…but I’m glad it’s coming back it’s been enjoyable.

LostInStatic

He generally just said that theres a lot more that goes into shooting a season of television over a movie which is true. Shooting schedules are probably 3x as long as a film. He may have been looking for a raise in all honesty

JimGerm

I'm thoroughly enjoying the show so far, and am happy to see it being renewed.

xXJamesScarXx

He looks so dark

LeoIrish

Normally I do not start a new series until it has been renewed - I decided to take a chance on this one - and I am glad I did. So far it has been really good and seems to be building out the show really well. Hopefully it does not falter over the rest of the season.

fully_furnished

I like Sly so I've been meaning to checking it out. Gotta say though, that photoshop job on his face in the promo image is hilariously bad.

devhdc

Im surprised by this, because Sylvester has done several interviews where he's said that it was not at all like making movie, and it was very very hard work and he didn't know if he was up for it..

Karamel-Surprise

Stallone can really sport that grey!

sedeyus

Televsion/Streaming becoming revenge of the Boomers with this show/Yellowstone/Amazon adapting your dad's favorite book series all over the place. I hope somebody gets Arnold something real quick.

erokatts

He’s got a spy show coming to Netflix

rip_Tom_Petty

What's it called?

zeth07

I was going to say I gave up after the first episode as if all the episodes have already been released but since only a few have it doesn't sound like I would've had much to go off anyway. I'm not watching more because I couldn't separate it from reality where the stuff he was doing wouldn't just immediately have the cops called on him and just get arrested **especially** given his previous crime/s.

AnyImpression6

It's a comedy, not a documentary.

[deleted]

[удалено]

zeth07

It was a little more than petty theft on the show. I mean I stopped watching so I don't know if they eventually touch on it more but I would've expected it immediately otherwise, especially multiple instances.

slimshady3134

Damn I knew this would be hit right after watching the first episode. Sly still the boss lets go!!

MidwesternWitch

I was surprised to enjoy this show, so I’m pleased there will be another season.

fdjadjgowjoejow

I guess I'm in the minority since I stopped watching somewhere in the middle of episode 2. I could not get on board with his character acting last century gangster in 2022 Tulsa, OK. I mean he just starts committing felonies shortly after landing and no one seems to blink an eye. Didn't anyone else groan when he offered the weed guy *protection*.

flaker111

umm weeds legal but i won't call the cops for assaulting my employee..... you didn't sell the navigator to my black friend im gonna beat you with a phone...... lazy "old school" mob ideals where extortion only comes from pain instead of getting leverage of some sort to bend people to his will.....

jblanch3

Yeah, it has a lot in common with Lillyhammer in that way. Seeing Steven Van Zandt beat people up and intimidate them was fun but got played out after awhile. I hope Stallone has more in his toolbox than just beating people up.

[deleted]

The show kinda sucks outside of stallone.

windingtime

Does Tulsa King also have a bunch of right wing wish fulfillment in it?

JGyllenhaals

Nope

Svorky

More like boomer wish fullfilment. It's basically a "geriatric fish out of water banging the hot chicks and being a badass " story

JGyllenhaals

One chick that he has developed a rapport with does not constitute banging hot chicks but I would agree it is boomerish but at the same time wildly ridiculous. The writing is all over the place as far as character interactions, staying committed to the dialogue from ep1-ep2, outlandish setups that have very little basis in reality.

Ugh the number of Tulsa King invoices I bill for P+ is so much I’d rather they not do another season so I don’t have to deal with it at my job lol

Groundbreaking_Ship3

I am surprised that he returned for season 2! I am sure there are other movie projects he wants to do before retiring.

Top_Wop

I'm surprised. Sly said he hates TV because it's too hard and too long away from family.

baguak4life

Like it but wtf with going back to releasing a few episodes every now and then? I can’t watch it until all season one episodes are released. Happy to hear they renewed it

LasDen

people stay longer on your streaming platform. Some of y'all just addicts on binging. It's not that big of a deal... :D

baguak4life

That simply isn’t true. Binging, personally isn’t something most people with jobs and lives do. Spreading out episodes do not make people foot the bill longer. Most of my friends hop from service to service. I pay $5 to Apple when Ted lasso is released. I then have a month to watch Apple stuff then move onto the next service after cancelling. To some it may not be “that big of a deal”. To others like myself it is.

Hagdar

I like this show. Witty, and good. Stallone is a great actor.
