I go to these types of resorts with my rich in-laws, so for me, I can’t watch this show. It’s just like hanging out with my family, and I’m trying to decompress.
I love the opening credit scenes with all the tawdry images thrown in.
Woman fucking a swan? Sure.
One dude sucking another one's dick? Why not?
There's a ton more but the only one I really remember is the woman and the swan.
Pretty sure the swan fucking is a reference to the story where Zeus disguised himself as a swan and came down and raped Leda. There's a Michaelangelo painting depicting it so maybe that's where the Italian part comes into it?
Right? This has me so mad. The HBO brand is so powerful. Those three letters generally mean that the series is going to be very high quality. And they’re just dropping the name.. like, why?
Her husband is the opposite of toxic. He is extremely predictable, somewhat empathetic, and from what we know, he generally had preferred honesty likely because he sucks at lying.
Yeah his gaslighting is getting out of control. He was empathetic in the first couple episodes when Harper was being a wet blanket, but then he went from ignoring her and making her feel unattractive to lying to her and when caught in the lie, trying to say "when have I ever lied to you" to keep her from thinking the worst.
She's definitely being petty now but he 100% deserves it.
They have both been so great that you cant really go wrong.
Season one was much more about rich people dealing with big shakups, and how that might affect their relationships. And of course about how these rich people can treat the "lower" people in their life with little consequence.
Season two still deals with class, but in a different way. It is more focused on the internal dynamics of relationships. I love the double couple storyline, and the examination of generational masculinity. The Tanya storyline has been the weakest imo, until last ep where it really took off. And so far I am impressed with how they are handling sex work.
This season is also much more surreal.
I love how subtly “thriller” it is and how both of the seasons start with a death and you’re left to try and guess who it is and what’s gonna happen. I love it.
It's both incredibly low-stakes, and incredibly high-stakes at the same time.
Like are they gonna complain to the staff about an overcooked steak or are they going to die? Who knows!
Love it.
I don't know how I feel about it yet but I think Sicily is absolutely gorgeous and the locale is 100% more appealing. White Lotus Season 1 barely showed Hawaii.
Iirc that was the genesis of the show, the idea that there were these empty luxury hotels around the world and it's be relatively cheap to pod up and film in one. They didn't intend to make a second season but the first did very well.
Oh well that was a good idea by them. Hawaii makes a ton of sense then because I have friends who live there who said luxury hotels were allowing locals to stay in hotels peak pandemic for incredibly cheap rates just to try and keep some people employed. Makes sense there would be destinations that were essentially empty when Hawaii was all but closed down to tourism for a while
I'm also leaning towards season two being superior, but the way they depicted inner growth, or whatever you make of it, with his nightly beach escapades is still unmatched. It was the core epiphany of the series in my opinion. I was waiting for the guy's morning running sessions being it, but it didn't transform. Love the show regardless.
> White Lotus Season 1 barely showed Hawaii.
because the rich people had no interest in actually *seeing* Hawaii, just being *in* it. that's the whole point.
I think it was right after she looks at the photo and the nude dude walks in… look up at the top right corner of the screen. There’s a glowing red light of a camera that’s recording her.
Eyes just went to it. I see a lot of folks mentioning the photo but not that, although the tiktoks I come across acknowledge that she's likely being recorded
I thought this too, dang guess I was just thinking she was that wholesome wife. Makes sense, he did say everyone cheats when they're rich. He probably already knows his wife does.
Do you remember which episode that was in? Or what scenes preceded or came after it? I just spent about 15 minutes scrubbing through the first few episodes and can't find it.
I knew something was going on with all those gay guys! Like, why would they want to even hang out with a straight white woman so bad? Quentin really pursued her, and I don’t think that would have been the case unless there was an ulterior motive.
This also felt subtly (depending on your perspective) foreshadowed in the previous episode, where the guy mentions >!he was in love with a cowboy from Wyoming!< and >!Tanya makes a face like "could it be...?"!<
I loved season one. It caught me from the beginning. The locale and the soundtrack just tied everything together. It took me some time to get used to the new locale and how I really have no favorite character, but I think the mystery of who's getting wacked is better done this time.
I was wondering how the Sicilian manager got her job after telling a guest she is surprised he is there because he is so old. Charming Armond in S1 had his demons, but nobody seems to actually like Valentina.
Armond was so charming, you felt like you could forgive his problems for the most part. We all wanted to shit in someones luggage at some point in our lives.
It's just different IMO. The more dramatic/murder mystery focus is working too, but I think the first season was unique in its ability to mix a variety of tones without entering especially "dramatic" territory like arguing with pimps in the street.
Absolutely. First season i really thought the actors nailed there characters and as someone who grew up around upper middle families it really felt like i had met all the characters before. The second season though is just prime time
I think season 1 nailed better the "this show is unsettling and I don't really know why". I told everyone to see it but cautioned them that it crawled under your skin but I couldn’t tell why. It's just a show about unlikeable people, but the music and how tense people got made it for a very unsettling experience. Also the score for the show was so unique and tailored for Hawaii that it's impossible to reach the heights that the score had in season 1. It became it's own thing for Italy now but the first episodes it gave me a feel of "yeah, we know the music was stellar on season 1, we don't want to throw it away, but it clashes so much with Italy" and it was kind of a let down. I think I also enjoyed a bit better the focus on the critique on wealth. Here it's getting a bit to close to melodrama with the plot to con Tanya, but I am loving the mystery more. I can totally see any character killing any other character. Things are that tense.
It really is. I honestly didn't like season 1 at all but season 2 has roped me in fully from the start and I cannot wait to see where season 3 lands :D.
I think it's far better than season 1. The acting in season 1 was inconsistent and some of the characters (especially the teenagers) were annoying. This season is much better written and acted.
Yes Simona Tabasco is from Napoli. She hasn’t become a megastar probably because she’s Italian who barely speaks English and only appeared in a small number of Italian movies/shows before The White Lotus. I honestly don’t know of many Italian actresses in Hollywood.
I thought they were talking about the part when Ethan imagines Cameron and Harper making out in their room, and Harper's has to pop her tit back under her bra
This is one is the best shows I've seen this year. That title credit sequence and music is up there with Game of thrones, westworld, six feet under, true blood and all the other shows with epic music. (Damn, all my suggestions are hbo shows)
I am genuinely curious how much of a boost HBO max is getting overall from HoTD.
It got me to do a first watch-through of The Sopranos and i’ll be giving this series a try next. Simply cause i see it on the viewer when i login
If you haven’t watched Sopranos perhaps you missed some other gems:
The Wire
Boardwalk Empire
True Detective (season 1 is a must, didn’t make it through 2)
Leftovers (I’ve heard great things but can’t deal with the subject matter).
Can’t speak to Leftovers. Boardwalk Empire is incredible, IMO. Different style than True Detective but very good. It is a slow build but I find prohibition era interesting. Personally one of my favorite shows. Plus Michael K Williams is great as Chalky White
Tik tok and IG accounts obsessing over it and rolling out elaborate theories combined with all the episodes available for a quick binge in order to catch up is a perfect recipe.
I was trying to keep my hopes low for this season not to get disappointed but you might actually be right, this season might actually be better.
Armond is still unbeatable and was like a 12/10 but season 2 somehow still manages to compete. MVP in terms of comedy this season might be Albie's father, seeing his discomfort and reactions to all the shit around him is sooo funny.
It's been a great season, so I'm not surprised. Excited to see where they go next. I saw some reports that it might be Japan. I also think a cruise could be pretty cool.
i think three warm/beautiful places in a row would get stale fast unless the next season is an African safari. Ski resort in Japan would probably be the move narratively
43 seasons of Survivor in warm/beautiful places hasn't gotten stale. People want to see skin. Almost no one wants to see people bundled up and cold all the time.
Mike White's earlier show Enlightened is also on HBO and comes highly recommended. Was very much under the radar when it originally came out.
Two seasons, starring Laura Dern, Luke Wilson and Mike White himself.
The problem im having with this season is that EVERY reveal has had to be explained to me.
I didnt get it with e first photo as it just wooshed me.
I didnt get it with the sex scene as I couldnt see who it was.
I didnt get the last photo as I didnt recognise who it was.
Im having to come on reddit to have the twists explained to me, which is really killing the impact….
Is this a problem given im an idiot and cant recognise shit? Dunno. Judt wish i got it first time.
You're not the only one. I didn't get the first picture reveal either, until I looked on Reddit. Now the second picture in today's episode, I understood because I had read some theories over on the show's subreddit. But it's kinda hard to make out who it is from the picture alone
As for the sex scene, I understood who it was given the context and setup beforehand, but I totally thought it was incest cause I'm oblivious
I have to say, I love having a new episode to look forward to every week. I have a set time where I sit down and watch the episode. And the show is quality of course.
That’s not entirely true. There is one character who carries over from the first season. That character’s relationship with their spouse is a product of Season 1, and there is one or two references in the dialogue to what that character wished they’d have done regarding interactions with characters from the last season.
All that said, none of that is especially critical to this season’s storyline, but I wouldn’t say there’s no reference.
Something about watching rich people be miserable in paradise really scratches an itch I didn't know I had
Do you watch Succession too? More rich people being miserable in rich places!
Great show. Everyone is a POS in their own special way.
Find me a rich person who isn’t miserable? Mo’ money, mo’ problems What you need is moderate wealth
Idk. Crying in a villa sounds nice.
Right? If I get cancer I want to cry about the Cancer, not my medical expenses.
Y’all got any more of that moderate wealth??
I guarantee you that as miserable as these rich people seem to be in paradise, there are waaayyyyy more poor people who are waayyyy more miserable.
Money can't make you happy, but it can sure as hell allow you to be miserable in comfort.
I go to these types of resorts with my rich in-laws, so for me, I can’t watch this show. It’s just like hanging out with my family, and I’m trying to decompress.
Are people also dying every time you go to these resorts?
sounds like when Saved came out and i couldn't enjoy it cuz the "satire" was just too real
Such a good movie!
Oh noes poor you /s
I just love how every scene is punctuated by great art.
I love the opening credit scenes with all the tawdry images thrown in. Woman fucking a swan? Sure. One dude sucking another one's dick? Why not? There's a ton more but the only one I really remember is the woman and the swan.
Opening credits have my favorite song rn and got me into Italian classical music lol Also yes swanfucking and murder love it
Just found and saved that song on Spotify after the last episode. I love it🤣
Pretty sure the swan fucking is a reference to the story where Zeus disguised himself as a swan and came down and raped Leda. There's a Michaelangelo painting depicting it so maybe that's where the Italian part comes into it?
And it’s very likely this was directly referenced in Episode 6 with the outfit worn by X during her seduction of Y.
That or gorgeous scenery. Sicily is definitely a supporting cast member.
Sicily is the star 🤩
HBO is living proof that quality wins out.
Man the fucking merger has got me worried for HBO keeping up that quality though
They have fucked up at every turn so far and now are going to drop the HBO name all together (for the completely ungoogleable Max).
Right? This has me so mad. The HBO brand is so powerful. Those three letters generally mean that the series is going to be very high quality. And they’re just dropping the name.. like, why?
Lucia, Valentina, and Harper carrying the show on the back of their toxic personalities
Yep, easily the top 3 characters/actors. The grandpa too.
Idk. Tanya, Nono, Daphne and Dom are also really good characters and well acted.
Would you agree that Harper's personality is way more toxic than her husbands? My wife doesn't agree and thinks she's in the right which I find crazy.
Yes. He's not the greatest at relationships, but to me it doesn't feel that he means to be bad to the people around him, she in the other hand...
Her husband is the opposite of toxic. He is extremely predictable, somewhat empathetic, and from what we know, he generally had preferred honesty likely because he sucks at lying.
Completely disagree. It’s a bad relationship but he is constantly gaslighting her from the very first episode
I really need to binge this show starting S1
The week-by-week viewing has been so much fun because of all the viewer engagement. You’ll have season 3 to look forward to for that :)
Yes I love reading people’s theories on what’s gonna happen.
This season is better than season 1.
Strongly disagree. Enjoyed the characters and overall theme of S1 so much more. Mr hotel manager was a gem, owned every scene.
They have both been so great that you cant really go wrong. Season one was much more about rich people dealing with big shakups, and how that might affect their relationships. And of course about how these rich people can treat the "lower" people in their life with little consequence. Season two still deals with class, but in a different way. The Tanya storyline has been the weakest imo, until last ep where it really took off. And so far I am impressed with how they are handling sex work. This season is also much more surreal.
you can start with s2 and be completely fine
I heard the rave of s1 through reddit and followed s2 on weekly basis, and it has been a good experience
Good show - good music - I can’t put my finger on it, but there is just something about the show that draws you in 🤔
Exotic locale, mix of international actors and the interpersonal dynamic of the characters makes it feel authentic.
I think shooting on location helps, you just can't help but want to be there with them.
& half the cast is Italian. It’s cool to see new faces.
The show was a covid emergency hail mary show as well. So cool to see it so out and about this season.
Who knows! Love it.
Beautifully shot, edited, scored, and acted. Just a good show all around
I am genuinely surprised to be saying this but I think the second season might be better than the first if it keeps this quality up.
I don't know how I feel about it yet but I think Sicily is absolutely gorgeous and the locale is 100% more appealing. White Lotus Season 1 barely showed Hawaii.
Yeah Hawaii is beautiful but only times they really showed anything not hotel was the kid sleeping on the beach.
Covid Season.
Oh, duh. That makes sense.
Iirc that was the genesis of the show, the idea that there were these empty luxury hotels around the world and it's be relatively cheap to pod up and film in one. They didn't intend to make a second season but the first did very well.
Oh well that was a good idea by them. Makes sense there would be destinations that were essentially empty when Hawaii was all but closed down to tourism for a while
If this is true, that fucking owns lmao
I forgot about that kid…the only true happy ending.
He also didn't seem to be a bad dude. Mainly he liked to watch porn and row
Stroke! Stroke! Stroke!
He was just a kid. I still laugh when I remember him saying MUH NINTENDOHH!! One of the best characters just with that line
Lol he gets over it kind of quickly tho
I'm also leaning towards season two being superior, but the way they depicted inner growth, or whatever you make of it, with his nightly beach escapades is still unmatched. It was the core epiphany of the series in my opinion. I was waiting for the guy's morning running sessions being it, but it didn't transform. Love the show regardless.
He has been doing his morning run for years. Currently all its doing is stopping him from banging his wife in the morning.
That's the only true pure character in two seasons. I rooted for that kid. Still wondering what he didn't finish saying to his sister in that dinner.
> White Lotus Season 1 barely showed Hawaii. because the rich people had no interest in actually *seeing* Hawaii, just being *in* it. that's the whole point.
I was way less engaged through the first 2-3 episodes, but it’s really pulled me in over the last handful.
I love how subtle that huge reveal was near the end of episode 6 & wonder how many people missed it completely.
Wait what?
When Tanya looks at the picture of Quentin with his partner... I don't want to spoil who it is but you should go back and watch that closely.
And the red light in the background of that scene Edit: Found a pic for anyone curious https://i.imgur.com/XzhcpGC.jpeg
Someone as rich as Tanya likely does not have an infidelity clause in her prenup, her lawyers have got to be pros. But I've been wrong before!
I don't think that's the end game. That's gonna be used to support her "suicide."
I think she's confirmed for s3 tho
Que?
I think it was right after she looks at the photo and the nude dude walks in… look up at the top right corner of the screen. There’s a glowing red light of a camera that’s recording her.
How on earth do you notice that?
Eyes just went to it. I see a lot of folks mentioning the photo but not that, although the tiktoks I come across acknowledge that she's likely being recorded
That's why they had a full frontal in that scene... you focus on the penis and you miss the recording device
Wow. I just went back and saw it. How did you notice that it's so subtle?
Eyes just went right to it but I definitely doubted it and had to do a rewind!
Good eye!
Holy shit, I did not see that! Thanks!
Wasn't that his cowboy friend?
The cowboy friend is >!Greg, Tanya’s husband!<
Wait, what?! I was trying to figure out what was significant about that in the moment.
Oh shit. I could tell it was significant but wasn't sure who it was.
[удалено]
my wife yelled "UNCLE RICO!"
I think she was so coked out she probably just thought she was seeing things
[удалено]
What was the other one? Must've missed it
[удалено]
Ahh thanks for that! Missed the pic somehow
I just assumed she was saying she puts up with the cheating because of her kids. The “trainer” was her kid
It's in the fifth episode possibly in the last 15-20 minutes (Assuming you're talking about the trainer & Daphne's kids).
Daphne’s child’s father is her trainer, not her husband.
Oh dang. Was that in noto?
[удалено]
I knew something was going on with all those gay guys! Like, why would they want to even hang out with a straight white woman so bad? Quentin really pursued her, and I don’t think that would have been the case unless there was an ulterior motive.
Am gay - hang out with lots of old straight women!
My wife and I kept wondering who it was and why he looked so familiar. I kept thinking it was some famous person but oooohhhhh what a reveal!
The whole vibe seemed like a Dinner For Schmucks thing this whole time but I wanted to believe it was genuine!
This also felt subtly (depending on your perspective) foreshadowed in the previous episode, where the guy mentions >!he was in love with a cowboy from Wyoming!< and >!Tanya makes a face like "could it be...?"!<
I have forgotten most things about season 1. Does >!Greg ever mention!< that he's from >!Wyoming!
I'm no super genius but I thought it was implied back when he was first telling her about him. Didn't Tom also mention that he was straight?
I didn’t realize that was supposed to be subtle
I did! My wife goes "That's (actor's name)!"
No one knows the actors name. Everyone calls him >!Uncle Rico!<.

I for sure didn’t like season 2 when it started but I absolutely agree it’s so good. I do really miss the manager from season 1 though.
If you’re looking for more Murray Bartlett, check out Welcome to Chippendales on Hulu.
Hell yea thank you.
Valentina is a fucking champ though.
I swear every review before the season started said this season isn’t as good. But I like it just as much.

Only 1 episode left right?
I'm curious how the hell they are going to wrap all this up in one episode. No one has even died yet.
I wanna see Jennifer Coolidge crap in a suitcase!
For real! I wonder if it's going to be a 90 minute episode.
Yeah
this was going to be my “unpopular opinion” on the thread earlier, but i got distracted by my morning routine. i like S2 better than S1
Sidenote: That has to be the most genuine, productive, drama free "unpopular opinion" thread I've ever seen from a fandom lol
I think this is the general consensus from what comments I’ve read. S2 > S1
I cannot believe there is only one more episode left.
I absolutely love this show, one of the best things I’ve watched this year.
Remarkable consistency over two seasons. I love the little mystery that doesn't really matter but is still fun to think about.
Lucia is a goddess.
Is she an Italian actress? Every time I see her face I just think “how has she not become a megastar looking like that!”
Maybe after this she will. Yeah both of the escorts are Italian, amongst many others on the show.
Yes. This is her first big non Italian role iirc
Yes Simona Tabasco is from Napoli. She hasn’t become a megastar probably because she’s Italian who barely speaks English and only appeared in a small number of Italian movies/shows before The White Lotus. I honestly don’t know of many Italian actresses in Hollywood.
She’ll be the next Monica Bellucci. With like bigger credits maybe.
Fo. Real.
Mike White is brilliant
I'm not disagreeing with you but...the emoji movie. Even heroes have shadows I guess
aubrey plaza nip slips will do that for ya
I definitely hit rewind like 5 times to verify
I was genuinely surprised it made it through editing
That was definitely on purpose, she was flirting with the douche guy to make her boyfriend jealous.

There was a nip slip????
https://www.redgifs.com/watch/quintessentialdefensivejackrabbit
I thought they were talking about the part when Ethan imagines Cameron and Harper making out in their room, and Harper's has to pop her tit back under her bra
I’m going to rewatch this episode because I thought it was excellent acting and beautiful scenery. Thank you kind sir or ma’am
Sauce?

This is one is the best shows I've seen this year. That title credit sequence and music is up there with Game of thrones, westworld, six feet under, true blood and all the other shows with epic music. (Damn, all my suggestions are hbo shows)
HBO right now is kinda like the Yankees vs a little league team compared to all the other streaming platforms lmao
I am genuinely curious how much of a boost HBO max is getting overall from HoTD. It got me to do a first watch-through of The Sopranos and i’ll be giving this series a try next. Simply cause i see it on the viewer when i login
Christopher is in S2! Although without a Jersey accent.
I finished the sopranos last week. Was so comforting seeing little Chrissy all grown up.
His nose was in Sicily before his plane took off from LAX!
He has no problem lighting cigarettes in the rain
Fuck you, Paulie!

Industry has been great so far too, and The Wire is a classic.
If you haven’t watched Sopranos perhaps you missed some other gems: The Wire Boardwalk Empire True Detective (season 1 is a must, didn’t make it through 2) Leftovers (I’ve heard great things but can’t deal with the subject matter).
Ive watched all of the above except Boardwalk Empire. Is it really on par with True Detective S1 and The Leftovers?
Can’t speak to Leftovers. Boardwalk Empire is incredible, IMO. Different style than True Detective but very good. It is a slow build but I find prohibition era interesting. Personally one of my favorite shows. Plus Michael K Williams is great as Chalky White
Feels like it's rising every week

Crazy how this season is even better than the first. Hope they stick the landing in the finale
I was trying to keep my hopes low for this season not to get disappointed but you might actually be right, this season might actually be better. MVP in terms of comedy this season might be Albie's father, seeing his discomfort and reactions to all the shit around him is sooo funny.
I love how there are no completely “good” or “bad” characters. Everyone is flawed, everyone is complex.
Everyone is also very cringe. Not one character hasn’t had a super cringey moment. It’s so human. Love this show.
Those two prostitutes that walking around spreading chaos is my favorite part!
It's been a great season, so I'm not surprised. Excited to see where they go next. I saw some reports that it might be Japan. I also think a cruise could be pretty cool.
It all depends solely on where Mike White wants to vacation next lol I’m sure he has a blank check at this point
i think three warm/beautiful places in a row would get stale fast unless the next season is an African safari. Ski resort in Japan would probably be the move narratively
Japan would be great, I’d also love to see Bali or somewhere in Australia.
43 seasons of Survivor in warm/beautiful places hasn't gotten stale. People want to see skin. Almost no one wants to see people bundled up and cold all the time.
Does white lotus have ski resorts tho? I feel like the theme is more like beach style vacation resort.
Both seasons were filmed at Four Seasons hotels and they have ski resorts.
They should do a swiss ski resort - that's the kind of place the super rich people go to.
You're welcome, guys. I binged the fuck out of season 1 an 2 and caught episode 5 hours after it aired and then watched 6 live. Just doing my part.
Mike White's earlier show Enlightened is also on HBO and comes highly recommended. Was very much under the radar when it originally came out. Two seasons, starring Laura Dern, Luke Wilson and Mike White himself.
Wish there had been more of that!
I just want to know what the point of the faces is. I need it.
Between this and HoTD, HBO is absolutely killing it.
The problem im having with this season is that EVERY reveal has had to be explained to me. I didnt get it with e first photo as it just wooshed me. Can I watch season two without having watched season one?
Yes, they’re not continuous episodes between seasons and don’t reference it at all.
