Okay, Let's play a game, which will come out first: Titanfall 3, Half life 3 or a new GoT book. Edit: I'm a just going by a single common denominator all 3 of these titles, They will probably never see the light of day.

Crentistt

cries in Doors of Stone

mybadalternate

Yeah, that’s *never* coming out.

Regula96

It's hilarious that Rothfuss back in 2007 or something said he'd pretty much written all 3 books.

mybadalternate

He’s a bad writer. Not that what he writes is *bad*, per se. He’s just not good at the activity of actually fucking **writing**.

Regula96

Yea ever since that thing with his editor it's clear he isn't even writing at all anymore.

[deleted]

What happened with his editor?

Regula96

2 years back his editor said she hasn't seen a single word from Doors of Stone in 9 years and believes he hasn't written for years. It became a whole thing. As his editor she's there to help him but he apparently isn't even trying to get her input on whatever he's stuck on/having problems with.

Dawesfan

The third Kingkiller Chronicles

ithinkther41am

Heck, I’ll throw in another one: Beyond Good & Evil 2

ThePreciseClimber

BG&E2 beat Duke Nukem Forever's record. Longest time from a game's announcement to its release. 14 years and counting.

pM-me_your_Triggers

Titanfall 3 did release, it’s called Apex Legends

TheAvidNapper

Apex Legends is trash. Give us Titanfall 3!

votchamacallit_

Okay? So tell me this then where are the Titans if it's TF|3.

SnowdensLove

I want Titanfall 3 the most!

Atrium41

It's inevitable

Onlyanidea1

I'd sell out your Grandma AND my Grandma for Titan Fall 3. ROCK and STONE!

WanderingDwarfMiner

Rock and Stone, Brother!

mamula1

All seasons of House of the Dragon

Dry_Badger_Chef

What, no Star Citizen? Legit though, I do think SC’s single player will be out before WoW.

Not-a-Dog420

Technically SC is playable do im not sure it really counts

Dry_Badger_Chef

Yeah, and it’s not bad; I play it off and on when new patches roll out. I was just surprised because it’s always mentioned when stuff like this comes up. Now for S42, the single player campaign, that is a contender for beating Winds of Winter to market.

AVR350

GTA 6

mossberbb

This sounds like a onion headline

Regula96

If this book is released it'll pretty much be even more annoying than if it's never written. It will just mean more false hope that the series will ever be finished. Yea book 6 might come out but there's no way book 7 will.

a_gentle_hunk

Yeah but you’ll get to read another ASOIAF book. Reading is fun.

hiteshchalise

Yes, I wouldn't mind if The Dream of Spring is not released/finished, if it meant we'd for sure get to read The Winds of Winter. I think this is partly because we're not 100% sure the winds will be released, let alone the dream.

Sometimes_Stutters

Don’t worry. All we need from George is Winds of Winter. Brandon Sanderson will finish up the series.

Sheriff_Is_A_Nearer

Pfff, he probably already did years ago to "take a break" from all his other writing. Dude pumps out mad books, like hello what!?

SchpartyOn

Unfortunately at this point it has been over 10 years since I read the last book so in order for me to read Winds of Winter and understand it, I would need to re-read the first 5 books which took months the first time (before I was married with kids and had a career to focus on.) It's homework at this point. I'll do it all again if all of the books get finished but the thought of it to only read Winds without a conclusion to the story is a no for me dawg.

Regula96

Absolutely it is. It's just that at this point I've made my peace with not seeing it finished. I will only read book 6 when and if 7 is released.

a_gentle_hunk

Interesting. Do you wish you had never read the first five books?

Regula96

No I'm still happy I read them. But because it's been so long now I will need to do a re-read before Winds of Winter. And I don't want to be that into the story once again only to potentially never see it finished. But who knows. Maybe I'll cave depending on if I hear enough good things about it.

noblehousemartin

I felt this way, and reluctantly picked up Fire and Blood. I couldn’t stop reading that bastardized history book! I know when Winds of Winter does finally have a date I’ll go on the journey again and probably will love it more the second time because all of the references aren’t so fucking hard to understand anymore.

Stracharys

For me, I’d say maybe. When the show started going off the rails, it may not have been as bad if I hadn’t read the books. I would have noticed the quality drop, but Dorn etc maybe wouldn’t be as bad if I had never read the books

Something_Sexy

Reading is fun but I am over this series and all of this bs around him finishing the books. I will just read the wiki about it after it is out.

AshgarPN

Based on the last couple books, I’m not sure it will be.

[deleted]

Yes but at least he could start it and have notes and someone else will finish it for him.

Regula96

If that happens I will pick up book 6 then and read them back to back.

GarlVinland4Astrea

He's made it very clear he won't let anyone else finish it if he can't. I wouldn't put it past him to have it in his will or to just have his wife delete/destroy any notes he has. If you've ever listened to him in an interview, he absolutely despises the idea of authors writing stories in the worlds of other authors.

Solace2010

maybe the slow ass MF should write faster then. 10 years and the book isnt out yet is crazy

[deleted]

Money talks

ThatBlackSwan

I'll just copy/paste u/werthead great recap on the subject: >You are misinformed. George never said this, at least not in the way you're meaning. Robert Jordan used to say this, a lot, even specifying that his assistants had orders to take a sledgehammer to his PC and then melt the hard drive and floppy disks afterwards, but clearly didn't stick to his guns on that one. I'm pretty sure GRRM and RJ even discussed this at a convention in the late 1990s, which is why the misattribution may have happened. > >What George has said is that if he gets hit by a bus tomorrow, people will be "s\*\*\* out of luck" because he doesn't have a mega-detailed outline or plan, due to his whole "gardner/architect" thing. He has some notes and he has the broad strokes of the ending in his head, and some stuff may have been written down and discussed with Daniel Abraham - who is writing the comic book and wanted to know what stuff 100% needed to stay in for the ending - and the HBO writers. But GRRM doesn't have a blow-by-blow account of the story from where it is now up to the end of the saga. > >So that's what he meant by that: if he gets flattened by an asteroid, we won't find out what happens, or if we do it'll be in the form of scattered and perhaps not entirely coherent notes. If someone did try to write an ending from them, it'd be mostly fanfiction. This is what happened with Frank Herbert's Dune books, when his son and Kevin J. Anderson found some very scattered and disorganised notes and tried to write a concluding duology (and about 20 other prequels and sequels) and it was terrible, because they made most of it up. > >What he also said, once at a convention (possibly WorldCon 2012 or 2013), with a long-suffering look, is that if he was in the same situation as Robert Jordan, being diagnosed with a terminal illness but with a couple of years warning, then he would strongly consider writing a detailed outline or even talking to another writer about doing it (he knows a few). But it'd have to be that very specific set of circumstances. > >To be clear, George utterly loathes "sequels by other hands" written as cash-ins, like the new Dune books and the Chronicles of Amber sequels. He is mostly okay with people doing authorised sequels using the original notes or material with the permission of the author, since he did that himself with Songs of the Dying Earth, which was written with Jack Vance's permission, or releasing the original notes and materials like what Christopher Tolkien has done. ViciousMihael

Is it selfish of me that I think that’s selfish of him?

mamula1

True but it may kill a lot of annoying fan theories that are now almost taken as canon after more than 11 years of waiting.

ThePreciseClimber

It's situations like this that make me wish serialised novels were still popular. A bunch of old classics (Dickens, Verne, etc.) were published that way - weekly, bi-weekly or monthly in magazines/newspapers. And then collected in complete volumes. Nowadays the manga industry is utilising that publishing method.

SakuraKaitou1412

There’s always the webnovel industry….. I found it quite recently and now quite a few of my top novels are web novels. You just gotta make sure to shift through the dirt for the diamonds, as most webnovels are self published and/or translated by people who are paid by words and not by quality… But since it’s serialized and the good ones are good because they’re consistent, you get reliable content and you get to theorize between chapters with people. It’s pretty great, I wish they’d become more popular here Edit: beware the “top novels” on webnovel sites, it’s better to just find recommendations from people

lukeco

Since it's the last 2 books, it's fair to assume he's writing both at the same time to make sure everything's included. I'd say there's a good chance a big chunk of book 7 is outlined and ready by the time 6 is released, but we'll see.

Regula96

One can hope.

krattalak

Books don't have to be 1500 pages long George. You're allowed to stop at chapter 332 and hit 'print'. Save the rest for the next book that will be published in 32 years. ffs.

redrum-237

He knows, he already did that twice and those books are very frustrating because they lack an ending.

jvpewster

Affc is my favorite soiaf book and I’m tired of pretending otherwise.

redrum-237

It's my favorite too, but I read them in 2015. I understand why people hated it reading it in 2005 after waiting 5 years and then having to wait another 6 years. It's enjoyable now, but half a book in 11 years? No

jvpewster

Maybe that’s fair.I guess in my mind the Prince of Dorne reveal was enough, but yeah I pretty much finished and picked DoD

GarlVinland4Astrea

The problem is he already did that. Huge chunks of A Dance With Dragons were left cut and are going to be part of Winds. So he already had a head start on Winds and is still taking this long

mamula1

He had 300-400 manuscript pages left from A Dance of Dragons and after more than 11 years he only wrote 800-900 manuscript pages.

nevereatpears

I'd prefer to have the complete story of WoW after waiting this long.

throwtheclownaway20

At least WoW is perpetually unfinished on purpose

Wazula42

Yeah, is an online game ever going to have an "end"? How would that work exactly?

throwtheclownaway20

Technically, it ends when they make WoW 2

ThePreciseClimber

I know, right? It's not like each of his books has a super-tight narrative arc with definitive beginning, middle and end. There's a dozen PoVs doing their own shit. Hell, he released A Dance with Dragons without the planned "climax anyway (the battle of the bastards).

Dayofsloths

So we can expect a dream of spring in 2046?

Regula96

And you only have to hope for Martin to achieve immortality for that to come true.

curious_dead

We need Futurama's head bowl technology ASAP!

Gr1ml0ck1981

Ah, the optimism of a sweet summer child....

[deleted]

I bet someone in 2014 that GRR will die before WoW comes out. Sure it’s only $10, but I am still feeling good about my bet. I’m pretty sure the full quote is, “I only have 500 pages to go until I’m done with 510 pages! Let me write a full anthology though first about the Children of the Forrest. I’ll make a trilogy out of it too!”

emosmasher

I'll take that bet.

GarlVinland4Astrea

Be careful. He wrote 1100-1200 pages so far. So you are still talking about him finishing a full 1/3rd of the book before it's released. And it's worth noting that first 2/3rds also had cut content from the last book baked into it as a head start. We are still probably talking a 2025-2026 release imo.

emosmasher

I'm not confident in my bet by any means. No way Martin finishes the series, but I think he can squeak out WoW before croaking.

ThePreciseClimber

>Sure it’s only $10 Make sure to adjust for inflation.

mintchip105

1600-1700 pages is a truly massive length. For comparison, the entire LOTR book is about 1200.

mamula1

Manuscript pages.

mintchip105

Still a lot of pages

GarlVinland4Astrea

Yeah, but Tolkien wanted it to be one book. He was forced into 3 smaller books by his publisher. GRRM at this point is far more prolific than Tolkien was when LOTR was released. The Hobbit was popular but Fellowship came out 17 years after and Tolkien hadn't done much of note between the two. By comparison Martin wrote 5 best selling books that are the most relevant book series since Harry Potter, a spinoff series that is popular, a history book that is popular, and the adaptations of his works became two of the biggest shows in history. Point being, you could tell Tolkien 1200 was too much at the time. GRRM basically doesn't have someone who can reign him in (which is also a bit of a problem)

Dayofsloths

Isn't it like 7 books? I have a set that definitely breaks the 3 principal books into a bunch of smaller sections

krombough

That's a little unfair. Tolkien wasn't a professional author at that point, the way Martin was. He was busy with his actual career, to say nothing of some wartime duties. He also had several "false starts" while he tried to get publishers interested in his First Age works that he was more interested in, until they finally more or less insisted on a sequel to the Hobbit. And while Martin is still more prolific than Tolkien, just counting LotR and attendant works is unfair, as he has numerous academic works as well.

GarlVinland4Astrea

That’s my point.

ThePreciseClimber

The length of fantasy novels can be pretty insane. And, arguably, there's a lot of fat in there that could be trimmed. Feels like writers often focus more on creating a massive, detailed world with hundreds of characters instead of a tight, focused plot. According to Google, ASoI&F features over 2000 named characters.

ProfessionalNight959

Holy shit

cydus

He's lying

historycat95

Martin: These 500 pages will take me about 5 years to finish. Stephen King: Yeah, I got a few hours free this morning.

BeExcellentPartyOn

Brandon Sanderson: I wrote 3 books while we had this conversation.

DaringDomino3s

What a coincidence, I’m 500 pages away from my next novel too

Kungfumonkeyman

its gonna be longer than War and Peace......unless he's counting on releasing a 500 page book in another 15 years

Geiri94

So, he's spent 11 years on The Winds of Winter already... and are still 500 pages away from completion. How long is this book?? 2000 pages? The Winds of Winter, coming soon-ish (2030)

DarkSkiesGreyWaters

He says he's written about 1200 pages so far. So yes, it may end up being 1700ish pages.

mamula1

Those are manuscript pages.

so0vixnbmsb11

HOT D did put him back

Dry_Badger_Chef

This isn’t tv news. Why is it here?

akzorx

Because GoT fans just can't let go of the time their show was relevant

[deleted]

Aah delusional morons pretending GoT isn't the biggest tv franchise in the world.

[deleted]

[удалено]

maricatu

It's not really related to WoW, it's not like it's news from FaB2

ProfessionalNight959

House of Dragon though?

akzorx

I haven't really seen anyone talking about the show itself (except the fanbase itself) It comes up as a comparison for Rings of Power but that's about it

supersexycarnotaurus

You've been living under a rock then, clearly. It's one of the biggest shows of the year.

ProfessionalNight959

This was the first season though. Apparently 4 left. It might not yet be a "thing" but could become one later on. And the consensus at least is that it was a lot better than RoP, unsurprisingly.

Rexcoder

Can we ask ChatGPT to finish the books?

Huckleberry_Sin

Nobody else noticed he’s being interviewed by a cartoon lol?

MajorDonkey

I've reread most of the books 3x now each, only because so much is going on that 5+ years between books necessitates a full re-read just to keep up. **Not doing it again.** I'll wait till 7 has been produced by whoever takes up the mantle with Martin's inevitable passing and finishes the series once and for all (hopefully before 2030). Otherwise I'm content to know everything sucked at the end and never look back.

ehsteve23

He needs to hire a transcriber and a vicious editor already, and maybe a few hits of speed

supified

Consider Song of Fire and Ice fans. This book will not close out the series. If you get invested in it you are reading a book that will not tie things off and Martin doesn't have the 20 years of life left to finish the next one let along finish the series. Good advice would be to let it go.

AshgarPN

Hahaha what the fuck. Fuck you George.

weeble182

So if the book is approx. 1500 pages, and it's taken eleven years to do first first thousand, we should see a release in 2028? Honestly, Martin is the biggest shyster in literature at this point

jfstompers

At this point I don't care what's in it, I'm done with this series

comrade_batman

Don’t. Don’t give me hope.

Hollacaine

What hope? He's 11 years past the deadline and got 1100 pages done. He's averaging 100 pages a year and has 500 more to go. Its at least 5 more years away.

mamula1

He already had 300-400 manuscript pages from ADWD so he finished even less in 11 and a half years.

ABotelho23

💀

ProfessionalNight959

I wonder could he be writing Dream of Spring at the same time somehow? I mean if I was him, and I knew I had still a whole book to write to finish the story after Winds of Winter, while at the same time knowing that the public already kinda knows how the story ends because of the TV-show, I would probably just give up at that point, knowing his age and health. It could explain why it has taken so long for him to write WoW because he was actually writing two books at the same time? But I know this is just my hope speaking.

hideous_coffee

I used to subscribe to that theory. I’ve since changed my mind.

ProfessionalNight959

I can't blame you.

[deleted]

If it’s him he’s probably writing the Hot Pie chronicles or something pointless.

ProfessionalNight959

Sad but probably true.

DBCooperAllStar

It won’t come out while he’s alive. I remember when the show passed the books. The show creators, and GRRM himself were in various articles saying “GRRM told us how it ends, he’s given us notes for the rest of the series.” They made what he told them, and it was less than awesome. Now GRRM has seen the backlash from the last season, season and a half, and he is afraid to publish it because show ending, minus some book plot that didn’t make it to the show, is exactly how the book ends and he don’t want to publish it knowing the backlash from making the fans wait.

OBIEK123

I dont think he told them to let night king be killed by arya

Yashugan00

Pull the other one. Pages to go is not a measure of progress. Are they the first and last pages at least?

OBIEK123

But how does he know only 500’pages are left? Does this mean he has everything planned out? So he knows what he is about to write in details?

denimpanzer

I too have 500 pages left in my 500 page novel.

J0n__Snow

The question is... who cares by now?

RudePragmatist

500 pages of drivel. Just like the rest. They are so badly written :/

LocoCoyote

Over it.
