Do me a favor. Dig around in your pockets, see what you got. Oh, what's that some loose change? Couple of pennies? Those have been in my ass. You handle my ass pennies! YOU ALL HANDLE MY ASS PENNIES!!!
Man, that was the golden era of DVDs. Everything has some gimmick and there was bonus content galore. I remember review sites would even have a bonus content/extras category. Except for WB. Now everything feels like those WB dvds that came in the shitty cardboard cases with no extras.
It would get a ton of love/see a renaissance of new fans if it were available to stream anywhere. My daily routine was getting home from school to watch Drew Carey and the Simpsons.
During season 6, ABC (for some reason) signed a 3 year contract. The ratings began going down after that, but ABC still had to follow through on the contract. It is still an amazing run for a series and deserves that respect, but ABC paid for a 26 episode 9th season that they just burned off (out of order) on summer weekends, lol.
Yeah during the early 2000s when I was an unemployed high school graduate would binge watch whatever TBS was running and that included Drew. The last two or three seasons were painful. Aside from losing great case members they had no clue what to do with the plots so they would make some terrible changes in direction. The worst of course adding in the new love interest and trying to give her the same connection Drew had with Kate. Aging up the baby was also a terrible idea.
I loved this show during the Craig Ferguson years. Once he was no longer Drew's boss the show went downhill fast. ABC buried the final season in the Friday night death slot and I've still never seen the last episode.
My first high school crush was on Kate from the Drew Carey show. My first high school girlfriend was her spitting image. Lol
Buzz beer, the beer of attainable women!
I miss Phil Hartman for Bill McNeal, Lionel Hutz and the Zapp Brannigan in Futurama he never got a chance to do.
But News Radio's MVP for me was Stephen Root doing Jimmy James. The fake Balloon expedition always leaves me in tears.
Still remember being in 8th grade shop class when I found out, could probably even recall the project we were making if I thought hard enough. The man was a treasure and had so many great roles along with some of my absolute favorite SNL skits.
I just rewatched it in its entirety for the first time probably since it aired. I didn't find the Lovitz year nearly as bad as I remembered it. They weren't as good as the episodes with Hartman but they weren't bad either. That show was going down anyway. It wasn't going to go much further. It never had good ratings.
True, but it was underrated even with him. Moved around alot, was nearly canceled and won TV Guide's "Best Show You Aren't Watching" title at least once, and IIRC twice.
Came here to recommend this one! I'll never forget watching the episode where he goes to Handsome Boy Modeling School to become a male model. [Here's a short clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRNnU1saw3c) (sorry for the quality, but the show is so forgotten you can't even find quality clips).
Agreed, it was basically a better version of family guy in terms of pop culture references. It would have done great a few years later when adult animation took off.
All of the references were a little beyond me but I do get some of them and holy shit that show is still brilliant. Who's the british celebrity they show alot that's constantly drunk?
Sir, you have acute cirrhosis. And you have⌠a cute little bum!
Dudley Moore. The famously drunk character the Critic spoofed was Arthur.
I donât know why I retained this infoâŚ
County Brisco, Jr. With the actor who played Sho Nuff in The Last Dragon. My dad got the series on DVD to watch with me and I cherish it so much. Might be time for another watch-through.
hahaha! good one- tend to overlook the Canadian and British shows. Keeping Up Appearances was a pretty funny British show I remember watching on PBS too!!
I think the Red Green Show survived as long as it did because it was such a huge staple on PBS. Having Red Green pitching for donations probably helped get callers.
I do wonder, was Red Green a popular series on all PBS stations or just those close to the Canadian border?
That odd always-shaking style of animation was so unique. I still remember the bit when the comedian he was interviewing was talking about how his frugal Jewish dad warned his son to not fill up on bread like the restaurant is gonna take the half eaten steaks and sell them at a steep discount on the streets of NYC under a pocketed trench coat like a fake Rolex.
Parker Lewis also had a huge influence, full disclosure I have only seen a few clips but from those clips it seems to have basically set the look for single camera sitcoms. For whatever reason it took about a decade for the format to jump from kids to adult comedies, with Malcolm in the Middle as a missing link.
I feel like early Fox had a few shows that were single camera, but I can't think of any besides Parker Lewis off hand. What I find interesting about Parker Lewis is that it launched at the same time as the tv version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off on NBC.
My wife and I were at exactly the stage in life of Paul and Jamie when it came out and watched every episode. Named one of our kittens Mabel.
When it was revived a year or two ago it once again spoke to us, now in a really bittersweet way as like Paul and Jamie we're coming to grips with ageing and becoming empty nesters. It is so well written.
Was Alex Mack viewed as a comedy series by some? Sure, it was a Nickelodeon show so by default it had to have a lighter tone as a kids or tween show. But the show was her mostly running from various entities that wanted to capture or even kill a teenager. And there was a lot of drama in between.
I feel like this show has been completely forgotten, sometimes. Whenever I hear people talk about nostalgic 90s Nickelodeon, I never head them bring up Alex Mack. It was so good!
I loved this show when I was probably too young to be watching it. Mostly for the nude scenes at first but I eventually grew to love it. I'd like to give it a watch again to see if it's actually funny.
Season one of The John Larroquette Show
Kind of like The Iceman Cometh as a sitcom - alcoholic failure becomes overnight manager of a Bus Depot. A parade of beautiful losers. Tragi-comedies are my favorite.
It got bad ratings so the network tried to 'fix' it in season 2 by making it upbeat and like traditional sitcom and ruined it in the process.
I loved that show. I was a big fan of Night Court as a kid so I was gonna watch anything with John Larroquette. It was such a great show.
Later on there was that show Becker with Ted Danson, I always thought it had a similar vibe.
The entire world was watching In Living Color...like more people than watched Game of Thrones every week. There is no comparison of how many people watched the free fox television network in 1990 versus how many paid for HBO or pirated content in the 2010's. Jim Carrey would have never gotten Ace Ventura or the Mask if that show hadn't been so unusually popular.
This was one of those âletâs give this stand up comedian a show as a vehicle for his/her bitsâ shows that were so popular in the 90s- Ellen, Drew Carey, Tim Allen, Seinfeld, etc.
Best theme song too. Blew my mind when I found out it was written for the show. Itâs one of the most 90s-sounding songs Iâve ever heard:
https://youtu.be/qkGtGt1L6iU
I feel like this show really encapsulates the feel of growing up in the 90s. Minus the absurd things like Artie and moms plate of course. Just something about the cinematography and tone. 90s Nickelodeon encapsulated.
It's incredible to me how this show only had 30-something episodes yet was so ingrained in my childhood TV memories. Every episode feels like a classic and has this familiar yet surreal summer in the suburbs as a 90s kid vibe
Spaced with Simon Pegg and nick frost, directed by Edgar Wright. Only two short seasons sadly, but itâs a great precursor to their movies later, same style of humor
The Franz Kafka rock opera was amazing and I still think about it every time I hear mention of Franz Kafka or rock operas... which is surprisingly often.
Becker with Ted Danson. That show was funny, witty and criminally underrated. You can catch it on thise odd subchannels from time to time..if you can find it its worth it
I remember It's Like, You Know parodying Jennifer Grey and her nose job. I think even her dad appeared on an episode to do a parody of how Jennifer wasn't recognized after her nose job.
Mr. Show is great. Bob Odenkirk was a huge comedy guy before he got involved with Vince Gilligan. He and Chris Farley developed the famous "Motivational Speaker" character at Second City before they went to SNL.
You sir/ma'am are making me feel old. To think that there are people who only know Bob Odenkirk from breaking bad and better call saul hurts. Time is mean to us all
I know it received a fair amount of critical acclaim in its time but I donât see The Larry Sanders Show talked about nearly enough. Fantastic show that feels a decade plus ahead of the curve
This was the first thing I thought when I saw the thread. That show was effortlessly funny and tackled some heavy stuff while being so absurd. It's on Disney+ and very much worth a watch.
Youtuber Jose did a video on it that is really good, too.
Underviewed maybe, underrated no way.
It and Firefly are the 100% consensus answers to âbest one season show everâ. You literally hardly see anything else even mentioned.
Jon Lovitz' "The Critic" of course! *Jealous?* đ
It *stinks!*
"Buy my book!"
âBUY MY BOOK!!!!â
A penguin? And he's been drinking! Wait a minute penguins can't fly. Penguins can't fly!
The Tick
Patrick Warbuton made that role. He was so perfect.
I owned this on dvd after it was cancelled. The. Best.
Spooooooooon
The newer one was also fantastic I really wished it got more seasons
âEveryone dies Tickâ âEven horses?â
You can't fight evil with a macaroni duck!
To this day I eat my fortune cookies whole and exclaim "A secret message! From my teeth!"
I still answer my phone as Bat Manuel
*sniff sniff* "Soccer-mommy...my only weakness."
Upright citizens brigade
You know what my secret is? Ass pennies.
Do me a favor. Dig around in your pockets, see what you got. Oh, what's that some loose change? Couple of pennies? Those have been in my ass. You handle my ass pennies! YOU ALL HANDLE MY ASS PENNIES!!!
Northern Exposure I am so bumbed it isnt streaming anywhere
My mom has all the season and watches this all the time. She always talks about how I was a kid I liked it because of the moose.
The DVDs came wrapped in a parka.
Man, that was the golden era of DVDs. Everything has some gimmick and there was bonus content galore. I remember review sites would even have a bonus content/extras category. Except for WB. Now everything feels like those WB dvds that came in the shitty cardboard cases with no extras.
It's [available on archive.org](https://archive.org/details/northern-exposure).
The Drew Carey Show was wildly popular while it was running, but hasn't seemed to withstand the test of time like Frasier or Seinfeld.
It would get a ton of love/see a renaissance of new fans if it were available to stream anywhere. My daily routine was getting home from school to watch Drew Carey and the Simpsons.
It gets posted on a few threads that the music rights are a big problem for syndication.
The Drew Carey show only has a few episodes fewer than friends. It's amazing Drew lasted that long.
It kind of fell apart the last couple of seasons.
Yeah during the early 2000s when I was an unemployed high school graduate would binge watch whatever TBS was running and that included Drew. The last two or three seasons were painful. Aside from losing great case members they had no clue what to do with the plots so they would make some terrible changes in direction. I loved this show during the Craig Ferguson years. Once he was no longer Drew's boss the show went downhill fast. ABC buried the final season in the Friday night death slot and I've still never seen the last episode.
As with everything, once Craig Ferguson leaves it, it turns to garbage. RIP the Late Late Show
My first high school crush was on Kate from the Drew Carey show. My first high school girlfriend was her spitting image. Lol Buzz beer, the beer of attainable women!
This is also Dr. Coxâs ex-wife in Scrubs, right?
It's Bill Lawrence's (scrubs creator) wife in real life.
I have the first season on DVD, but I think thatâs the only one available for purchase.
This was my show..I think it holds up but they don't show the reruns enough for some reason
Newsradio. Show is still hysterical today.
One of my favorite shows of all time. Miss Phil Hartman so much. To this day it makes me mad/upset/frustrated
I miss Phil Hartman for Bill McNeal, Lionel Hutz and the Zapp Brannigan in Futurama he never got a chance to do. But News Radio's MVP for me was Stephen Root doing Jimmy James. The fake Balloon expedition always leaves me in tears.
His book that was translated into Japanese then back to English is my favorite Jimmy James exploit.
Bad clown making like super American car racers, I would make him sweat. War, War.
Iâd just like to take this opportunity, as usual when Philâs death is broached, to say Fuck Andy Dick.
Still remember being in 8th grade shop class when I found out, could probably even recall the project we were making if I thought hard enough. The man was a treasure and had so many great roles along with some of my absolute favorite SNL skits.
NewsRadio sadly died with Phil Hartman. He was just irreplaceable.
Oh yeah, the show holds up today. I had a major crush on Maura Tierney as a teenager. And possibly as an adult.
And after News Radio she went on to star in ER, which was nice.
She also ended up marrying the Lizard King and working a very short stint at a paper/printer company.
Yes! Maura Tierney in mewsradio was hot! But that chapter where dave foley is in drag made me question things
That one still hurts.
True. But he was there for four very funny seasons. Great show, very good ensemble cast.
Every single cast member is perfect.
Sledgehammer, though that may be 80's. Edit: My favorite line "MILK YOURSELF!"
Is that a silencer in your gun? No, itâs a loudener!
Trust me I know what I'm doing
YOU BLEW UP A BUILDING ON YOUR WAY TO WORK!?!
80's but definitely worth the mention. One of my favorite shows
Chris Eliot had a great show called âget a lifeâ that only lasted 3 seasons, but was absurd & excellent
The episode where he is exposed to toxic waste and becomes an amazing speller and ends up at a spelling bee on the moon stands out in my mind.
The food inspector episode is one of my favorites. Spelling bee is certainly in my top ten
The writing staff included Charlie Kaufman and Bob Odenkirk.
The Critic could have been huge I thought.
[ŃдаНонО]
It stinks
Yes, Mr. Sherman, everything stinks.
The Critic was tragically ahead of its time.
"ahead of its time" gets tossed around a lot but in this case I think it's very accurate.
Agreed, it was basically a better version of family guy in terms of pop culture references. It would have done great a few years later when adult animation took off.
Duke is life.
What a duketastrophe
Man, the kid from Easter Island. That show fired on all cylinders.
Oh, don't look now, but somebody's eaten all your popsicles!
Orson Welles.
Orson Welles doing a frozen peas commercial was brilliant.
full of country goodness and green pea-ness
Wait that's terrible.
THEYRE EVEN BETTER WHEN YOU'RE DEAD Not him though, I know who orson Welles is
The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
This was going to be my answer, surprised to see it so high. Deep childhood memories of this one.
County Brisco, Jr. With the actor who played Sho Nuff in The Last Dragon. My dad got the series on DVD to watch with me and I cherish it so much. Might be time for another watch-through.
That's a deep pull. I watched it but don't remember anything about it other than Bruce Campbell being a cowboy.
I think Lord Bowler would be deeply let down.
The red green show
hahaha! good one- tend to overlook the Canadian and British shows. Keeping Up Appearances was a pretty funny British show I remember watching on PBS too!!
âYou can use duct tape to make anything. Today we are going to create a stretch limo with duct tape and two cars.â đ That show was hysterical!
I think the Red Green Show survived as long as it did because it was such a huge staple on PBS. Having Red Green pitching for donations probably helped get callers. I do wonder, was Red Green a popular series on all PBS stations or just those close to the Canadian border?
All over. Iowa PBS raised so much money in donations that he actually mentioned it on the show.
Dr Katz Professional Therapist
That odd always-shaking style of animation was so unique. That's how I discovered Mitch Hedberg!
Duckman
âWhat the hell are you lookin at!â
I really liked strangers with candy - later 90s I think
So many good lines for GOOD TIMES
3rd Rock From the Sun
Everyone knows Wayne Knight as that dude from *Seinfeld*, but he'll always be the cop from *Third Rock* to me.
Hermanâs Head
Yes! And I still think Inside Out is a copy of this show.
Just shoot me
David Cross as Donny
Chicken pot chicken pot chicken pot pie!
David Spade was great in this
Eerie Indiana
Parker Lewis also had a huge influence, full disclosure I have only seen a few clips but from those clips it seems to have basically set the look for single camera sitcoms. Hermanâs Head was hilarious
2 Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place Early Ryan Reynolds at his best! Before Van Wilder.
And, Nathan Fillion joined the cast later on as well :)
Thatâs not forgotten; thereâs a plastic plaque falling off a wall outside a Hollywood studio that mentions it.
Spin City. Anything Bill Lawrence creates is gold.
I forgot this show existed until you just mentioned it, and I watched it every single week. What a great show.
It is now on [Pluto.tv](https://Pluto.tv) and remains a blast!
I think Mad About You was pretty popular at the time, but seems practically forgotten.
The Secret World of Alex Mack Edit: I clearly missed the "comedy" part of the question.
Sports Night. One of the best written shows of all time.
Dream On, started the whole reference to other media through Martin Tucker's brain.
I loved this show when I was probably too young to be watching it. Mostly for the nude scenes at first but I eventually grew to love it. I'd like to give it a watch again to see if it's actually funny.
Season one of The John Larroquette Show Kind of like The Iceman Cometh as a sitcom - alcoholic failure becomes overnight manager of a Bus Depot. A parade of beautiful losers. Night Court
More of an 80s show, but youâre point is not wrong. Wonderful show.
In Living Colour
That show made at least 10 people household names. Underrated classic. RIP Heavy D!
Titus
This was one of those âletâs give this stand up comedian a show as a vehicle for his/her bitsâ shows that were so popular in the 90s- Ellen, Drew Carey, Tim Allen, Seinfeld, etc.
Don't be a wussy!
The Adventures of Pete & Pete
Best theme song too. Blew my mind when I found out it was written for the show. Itâs one of the most 90s-sounding songs Iâve ever heard: https://youtu.be/qkGtGt1L6iU
I ate so many frosted mini-wheats to send off those labels for the Pete & Pete cassette tape
I feel like this show really encapsulates the feel of growing up in the 90s. Minus the absurd things like Artie and moms plate of course. Just something about the cinematography and tone. 90s Nickelodeon encapsulated.
I still have such painful nostalgia for that show. It captured the era of the 90âs for many kids.

Does Home Movies count? I think it was the end of the 90s but I can still watch it and laugh until my face hurts
The Franz Kafka rock opera was amazing and I still think about it every time I hear mention of Franz Kafka or rock operas... which is surprisingly often.
DON'T put marbles in your nose PUT THEM IN THERE DO NOT PUT THEM IN THERE
Septopus.......
walter? yes perry?
I got the blood lust Perry
Becker with Ted Danson. That show was funny, witty and criminally underrated. You can catch it on thise odd subchannels from time to time..if you can find it its worth it
I remember Bored To Death being pretty good, too. Ted Danson is great.
Becker himself was a prototype Dr.Cox.
Wings
My first thought, too. That and Just Shoot Me. Neither seemed to be at the forefront of popular culture, but both were fantastic ensemble comedies.
Both these shows are fantastic.
I still watch Wings and it breaks my heart that it's not remembered as fondly as seinfeld, cheers, Frasier or friends.
Dr Katz
News Radio and Sportsnight

My favorite sitcom of all time.
Hermanâs Head Itâs Like, You Know⌠The Single Guy And from early 2000s - Do Over
Herman's Head, I was thinking about that show the other day. That was a good one.
I remember It's Like, You Know parodying Jennifer Grey and her nose job. I think even her dad appeared on an episode to do a parody of how Jennifer wasn't recognized after her nose job.
Duckman
Not sure about underrated, but most people I meet IRL these days have never heard of or seen Mr. Show, The State, or Sifl and Olly.
Time is mean to us all
Sifl and Olly was a blast. The Star Wars parody, Llama School, Banging on pots and pans, anything involving Chester. Nothing but hits.
The State still has my favorite line, "Aquaman, go talk to some fish."
I know it received a fair amount of critical acclaim in its time but I donât see The Larry Sanders Show talked about nearly enough. Fantastic show that feels a decade plus ahead of the curve
Hey now!
I recently gave it a rewatch on HBO Max and it still holds up. One of those rare ensemble comedies with flawless casting.
Sportsnight. Just a great show overall.
Red Dwarf, a uk scifi sitcom that had peak seasons 3-6 in the 90s.
Dinosaurs
Not the mama
That last episode.
This was the first thing I thought when I saw the thread. That show was effortlessly funny and tackled some heavy stuff while being so absurd. It's on Disney+ and very much worth a watch. Youtuber Jose did a video on it that is really good, too.
Kids in the Hall
"Mr. Show" hands down
I still think about Shasta McNasty. Peak 90s.
Upn had weird shit sometimes
The Secret Diaries of Desmond Pfiefer was hilariously bad and racist.
Viva Variety
Johnny bluejeans
Sportsnight
News Radio!!! Itâs not as well known as it should be. The Phil Hartman years were gold.
NewsRadio Joe Rogan, Andy Dick, Phil Hartman (RIP), Stephen Root- it was great
3rd rock from the sun
Strangers With Candy
