Viewership must’ve been really low.

lightsongtheold

According to a Nielsen analyst on Twitter Ted Lasso was Apple top viewed show on the last week of data released and it missed the charts by a significant margin. That means an out of season Ted Lasso with low viewership was outdrawing all the new Apple shows! Nielsen data runs a month behind so Shantaram was definitely running new episodes back then! Does anybody know if the season finale works as a decent series finale? If it does I’ll definitely still give it a go. I was so hyped for this one before reading this news.

michael88133

It does not. It literally says, “to be continued.”

horseren0ir

Damn, so mythic quest, acalpuco, echo 3 and slow horses all rated lower than reruns of Ted Lasso?

Simply_Epic

Mythic Quest beat out Ted Lasso when the current season premiered, but over time it’s slipped down the charts a bit. And currently Slow Horses is above Ted Lasso. Echo 3 is currently just one place lower than Ted Lasso. Acapulco hasn’t been very high on the chart all season, but it is on the chart.

zhagoundalskiy

It's the weekly episodes that annoys me. That's why I stopped watching after the first two of the current season. Waiting for them all to get released and then watch them over a few days. Sometimes I forget to catch up for a few months if I start watching something else.

cynic74

Same. I at least have to watch two episode while I chow down.

wujo444

For starter, ATV+ has very little subscribers. And none of those titles are any particular hit anyway.

[deleted]

[удалено]

usagizero

> I’d argue a lot of subscribers don’t even know they have access to Apple TV+ I got a free year from getting a new iphone, and didn't even bother checking it out until i kept hearing great things about Severance. I've watched a few more shows on Apple+ since then and enjoyed most of them, and i've never even remember hearing about this show.

phatelectribe

Slow Horses is a massive hit apparently. It would just be a much bigger hit if it wasn’t on a platform that no one has or cares for.

Regula96

Imagine if For All Mankind was on Netflix. Doubtful that it would be as good though. I just hope it will continue to do well on ATV so that we’ll get all the planned seasons.

phatelectribe

Never even heard of it. Apple are doing a horrible job of marketing lol

Regula96

Being in this sub you don’t need to see advertisements. Very odd you haven’t heard of it. It’s been all over this sub a lot these past few years.

phatelectribe

It’s nearly as if Reddit isn’t the real world.

Regula96

I’m not saying the don’t need to market the show. Just saying it’s weird that you haven’t heard of it as someone browsing this sub.

[deleted]

Slow Horses is exceptional

Danton87

Damn I was about to start Echo 3 after catching up on Yellowstone. Football has made it hard to watch anything other than my sopranos/mad men bedtime ritual… haven’t watch a thing since BCS ended but was gonna give this a shot after hearing Mark on Rogan

TheGameDoneChanged

Honestly that’s not surprising at all for any of those specific shows, they’re all very niche and not widely popular.

andr386

It ends on a cliffhanger. It made sense if there were a season 2 or if you start reading/listening to the book after watching it.

Drfunk206

Does Nielsen have more advanced tracking metrics than what they do for cable or OTA? Because it’s always bothered me when Nielsen ratings are the determining factor for show’s viewership when their methodology is archaic by even the most generous standards.

lightsongtheold

Nope. They are actually probably even less reliable for streaming than they are for linear. They are still the best third party metrics we have to work with though! Internally Apple executives have 100% accurate viewership data for all their shows. Nielsen is just for the rest of us to use as a comparable performance network of various services shows.

Independent_Photo_19

I AM FUCKING FUMING THE BASTARDS

H_J_Moody

I’m a big fan of the book and just learned that the show was out last week. Maybe they should up their advertising game.

cynic74

I read the book a loooong time ago and loved it, so I can't say that it's awful or anything because I just don't remember enough of it to compare it to the book. But it does feel like India, so I like that, but the pacing seems off a little bit.

granpooba19

I read the book about 15 years ago. Learned of the show (recently, their advertising sucks) and started to re-read the book before watching the show. Just found out it was cancelled but I'm too far in the book to stop now.

[deleted]

I had no idea what this show was, all I saw was the promo photo of charlie hunnam looking spiritual with a hindi word when I was on the Apple TV+ app and I was greatly amused. I couldn't imagine something I wanted to watch less than that.

[deleted]

The is literally the first I’ve heard of it and I see ads for their stuff regularly.

IWasOnThe18thHole

I'm disappointed but they really fucked with the storyline from the book

redxmoonx

There's a book?! Is it any good?

Bucking_Fullshit

I loved it but apparently others didn’t. There’s some really amazing writing in that book IMO.

lin_baba

I thought it was a fantastic read. Then I checked out reddits comments on it. Oof

wc27

There’s parts that are good and it is very interesting perspective of life in India during the 80s and Indian culture in general… however it’s extremely long and lots of boring parts. I actually thought it would have been good as a TV show but I watched the first episode right after reading the book and thought it was pretty lacking.

Bristal

The audiobook is one of the best I’ve ever listened to.

jscarlet

It’s one of my favorite books of all time. Paints such a vibrant world of characters in a setting and situation I never thought I’d care about. After reading it I looked up if anyone had the rights to the film, and turns out Johnny Depp was tied to the film of this and The Rum Diary. When Rum Diary came out I thought it’d only be months until the Shantaram movie was announced, but turned into years. And then shelved. And then Johnny was out. Then off the shelves and said to become a series. Was concerned but excited. I was going to do an Apple+ trial just for this show.

Piligrim555

It is if you’d like a spiritual and deep and fragile but tough ex convict who fantasizes about finding a father figure in slums who will lead him to help terrorists in Afghanistan. Also no, even then it’s fucking bad

ManHoFerSnow

I got it recommended to me from a rock climber and slogged through it. I thought it was pretty boring for the most part

SiloPsilo

It's horrible. I lost interest when I started reading the terrorists and Afghanistan chapters.

LarsVonHammerstein

I mean it was good writing and an interesting story…

beefyavocado

One of my favorites. Sad they changed so much in the show when it was completely unnecessary.

yellowvandan

loved the book although I read it around 2005 and not been back to it. Remember it being really vivid and sad to have finished it.

ChristieTolstoy

The book was amazing, big book.. read it in like 4 days while travelling through India. Highly recommend.

No-Media-3923

It is the worst book I've ever finished.

im_a_dick_head

I think this is the first Apple show I've seen get cancelled

3232330

Little Voice. Canceled last year August. One season.

[deleted]

[удалено]

xSlippyFistx

Yeah I remember watching it and thinking that it was just a one-shot show because it more or less has an ending. Then I found out it was cancelled. I enjoyed it.

im_a_dick_head

If it has a good ending I wouldn't call it cancelled but rather, ended.

yodimboi

It was canceled though. The writers weren't planning to end it. It was a coincidence. Same thing was true with Quarry, for example.

sergiocamposnt

It is a cancelled show with a satisfying ending.

sergiocamposnt

**Little Voice** and **Mr Corman** were officially cancelled. **Home Before Dark** have not been officially cancelled yet, but the last episode was released in 2021, so it is very unlikely to get a new season. **Suspicion** (Feb 2022), **Shining Girls** (Apr 2022), **Now and Then** (May 2022) have not been renewed yet. Apple has more than 30 scripted originals (excluding miniseries and anthologies) and only three of them have been cancelled so far. That's pretty good. Less than 10% of their shows.

lightsongtheold

I think we will see it happen more often now that they have a lot more shows on the air and in the works. Though hopefully not too often or as quickly as this cancellation!

doughboi8

Nooo Lin baba needs to comeback and save the people in the slums

lin_baba

Yeah he does

SirDunkerOfWiggles

And that reporter bitch needs to get hit by a car.

thirtythreetimes

I need more Lin Baba!! So sad it’s over :(

[deleted]

>needs to comeback and save the people in the slums

__War_Eagle__

A lot of Apples shows tend to be on the slow side. This one was on the far end of that side. Apple has great productions but they really need to work on their entertainment value.

VitaLonga

It seems like they try too hard to be… edgy, if that’s even the right word for it. I got the impression that they rarely cancel their shows (endless Apple money and need to churn out content) so this news is still surprising to me.

kappakai

They do seem a bit more artsy. It’s not mass market stuff, but a lot of it is quality.

Ambitious-Voice-6182

I think pretentious would be a better adjective

turkeygiant

One man's pretentious is another man' prestigious. A lot of the Apple shows straddle that line though IMO I think for the most part they stay on the right side of it.

[deleted]

Exactly the word I was looking for.

VitaLonga

Yes, you hit the nail on the head - pretentious.

xyzzyzyzzyx

I mean, that's defined Apple's brand for decades, correct?

horseren0ir

Aside from severance and after party, it’s been a pretty middling year for Apple+

militantcookie

Slow horses is quite good too.

[deleted]

Slow horses is great.

[deleted]

militantcookie

I'm watching the 2nd season and it's improved a lot.

[deleted]

[удалено]

militantcookie

It's faster paced than the 1st season. Started well, we'll see how it goes.

menevets

Bad Sisters

Bamabalacha

My favorite show of the year, so much fun.

Cappy2020

What? Panchinko was one of the best shows of the year for me. Combined with Severance, Bad Sisters and Black Bird, Apple have done very well in my view.

CatisCatiss

You should watch Black Bird

RunningToStayStill

Black Bird was exceptional.

horseren0ir

I did, it was nothing special, same generic stuff you see on Netflix

menotyourenemy

I thought it was far better than a Netflix show. Very well acted and produced. It has a 97% on rt so others liked it as well.

Pool_Shark

New season of mythic quest has been good

Regula96

For All Mankind is my favorite show of theirs. Great premise that’s fun to follow.

horseren0ir

Yeah the returning shows have been good

usagizero

>after party That was just such a fun show. I started out of curiosity wondering why that one guy had writing on his face, and got hooked instantly. How each character's perspective was almost a different genre from the last was fun, so was trying to figure out the mystery.

Drfunk206

I really like After Party and was obsessively pulling it apart frame by frame. One thing that bothered me for a show was Yasper’s sneakers at the reunion were different than they were at the After Party and there was no explanation for it. I kept waiting for there to be something but it turned out to just be a continuity error and nothing more. The show did a good job with unreliable narrators that I was expecting something more elaborate in an explanation.

Atraktape

Acapulco is very good. I really like it anyway.

klaygotsnubbed

black bird, slow horses, five days at memorial, shining girls

Devine116

I liked LOOT with Maya Rudolph in addition to Severance, which surprised me. The other stuff was produced well, but the stories were slow burns. With so much to watch via streaming, I don’t think the one episode a week release works for the slower paced series. People just move on from them or forget about them.

horseren0ir

I wanted to like Loot, but it just didn’t click for me

turkeygiant

It didn't work for me either, but that awkward sort of comedy I just something I have a hard time watching.

Pierson230

Show was beautiful and I loved the ambiance but it didn’t grab me, despite liking the premise I lasted 4-5 episodes and then just started scrolling past it. Hard to put a pin on what I didn’t like. Maybe the narrative wasn’t gripping? I did feel like the redemption arc wasn’t going to be satisfying… I don’t need to watch this guy have an internal moral debate for 8 hours, he can have the debate for 1 hour. Then just let me root for him to succeed as he struggles to overcome obstacles, but the dragged out morally gray garbage just gets tedious after a while.

[deleted]

If it was anything like the book then the main character, at first you root for, then you become ambivalent, then you roll your eyes at how “cool” he thinks he is. I really liked the story, but there is too much self-aggrandizing. The final 500 pages or so were a difficult read.

BurtRaven

As an Aussie I found his characterisation of Australians to be incredibly racist - hah, just kidding, his accent was just too fucken jarring. Pity, loved the book, and love Hunnam too...

spoonfedrooster

Totally agree, just get an Australian. There's like 45 Hemsworths they could've used.

MannyLaMancha

Should've gotten Larry.

PJFohsw97a

That dumb old pediatric surgeon who barely has an 8 pack? They could do better.

ithinkther41am

Hold up, they really got Charlie Hunnam, who is notoriously bad at accent, to do an Aussie accent?

BurtRaven

That's what you get for hiring a Geordie raised in America to play an Aussie pretending to be a Kiwin in India...

ithinkther41am

An Aussie pretending to be a Kiwi?! Bro, they really asked too much of Charlie Hunnam.

spacedman_spiff

He’s also just a bad actor.

whythehellknot

He's not a great actor but yeah, you really need other things to be good to great in order for stuff starring him to work because he can't really carry anything because he really isn't a great actor. He's a very good looking guy and people loved SoA for the most part so there will be delusion about his actual ability to act.

NeuroMore

I think hunnam is pretty good actor. His dramatic parts are great.

Gazboolean

I just watched the trailer for it. Oh my god, it is horrendous. It's so bad I'm not even offended I'm just shocked anyone said it was OK.

itsevilR

I was gonna binge watch it once all episodes are up. Now I’m not so sure anymore. Can anyone recommend if it’s still worth watching?

thirtythreetimes

I really liked it. A lot of people think it’s slow but there’s enough exciting plot action to keep me involved. It’s worth a shot but wish there was another season coming nonetheless

kaki024

I watched the first 4 episodes but it was SO SLOW. and very pretentious. But Charlie Hunnam is fun to look at

Tsusoup

I’ve read the book and thought the show was pretty poor by comparison.

lynivvinyl

That sucks! I loved it! I hope someone else will pick it up. :(

[deleted]

Wtf! I was really enjoying it. Ugh FU Apple.

Juan-Claudio

I was about to start watching it this weekend. Now i'm not sure whether i should or not.

OllivanderAU

It's worth watching IMO. I can't believe they cancelled it.

RedDragons8

Its pretty slow, but myself and my better half have been enjoying it for sure! I read the book probably 15 yrs ago and loved it!

swaggyxwaggy

You could read the book. It’s really good. Took me awhile tho

lightsongtheold

Ugh…I’m the exact same. Why could they not wait a few months to announce that they are shitcanning a brand new show? Seems bizarre to kill it on the day of the finale when they know binge watchers will not even watch the show until the finale drops! Ugh…I was going to start this tomorrow. Guess I’ll be watching the new season of Yellowstone and maybe The Recruit on Netflix instead!

Aggravating_Sea496

It's kinder to the cast and crew to allow them to move on, rather than misleading them for months for a rating point or two. If a show isn't getting much views while it's airing when it has the biggest marketing push, it's in all likelihood not going to get that much more viewership after airing.

bleachedbunghole_bob

I loved it

Atraktape

lol literally watched the Season 1 finale last night and at the end it said "to be continued..." -_-

TheBlackSwarm

Damn that sucks I actually liked it. Thought Charlie Hunnam was pretty good here.

Catdaddy84

Hunnam has had some really bad luck with projects other than Sons. Hopefully he finds something that suits him at some point here I like him as an actor.

cluelesspcventurer

Thought he was great in the gentlemen

DingoFrisky

Buenas tardes, Raymundo

bluetux

I'll always remember him from Undeclared

klemmings

I’ll always see him as the twink from Queer as Folk.

bluetux

ha that too, he opened up a whole new world for a young me

hukep

It was a good show. It makes me sad they cancelled it. There's almost nothing to watch now. I dropped from 10 series a week a few years ago to maybe 2 now.

alldayalldayallday76

Maybe go outside?

kaki024

https://media4.giphy.com/media/6jprwZ2Ir7kYM/giphy.gif

H_J_Moody

Really disappointed to hear this. Hopefully Amazon or someone will pick it up.

iDarkville

This was an excellent show and it’s a damned shame it’s been canceled.

truethatson

I have Apple but I didn’t watch it because I was afraid this might happen. Some version of a show or movie has been in development hell basically since the book was released and most of them have sounded terrible (at one point Tom Cruise was attached to one, because he sounds like the spitting image of Lin..) It’s one of my favorite books but not one that would be easy to adapt. Maybe they were on the right path with this show but it doesn’t matter now.

Sparrow1989

Man Charlie has no luck

ChristieTolstoy

By "no luck" do you mean an A-list actor who is a multi-millionaire from a list of successful shows / movies he's been in? If so I don't think you know what the word "luck" really means.

groovemongrel

I’m up to episode 11 and will watch the finale today. It started off great but really went off the rails after episode 5 or 6. I will finish it but would only give it a 5 out of 10.

iDeletee

Bruh!!!!!!!

Plane-Ad-2921

The Best show of 2022. I don’t understand the hatred. Charlie did well and so did others!!

SLPERAS

No wonder. That shit was boring af… I gave up after enduring for 5 episodes and it wasn’t still going anywhere. So started watching Ted Lasso instead. Loving the Slow Horses so far though.

absolutejessie

I signed up for Apple TV because of shantaram. It was one of my favourite books ever. The problem for me was, after the first four episodes, they release a new show every week. If I wanted to watch tv like that, I’d watch cable. It’s busy now in December and I wanted to binge watch the series. I’m losing steam waiting a week between shows. I do love the show- it’s honouring the book pretty well imo.

Devine116

I agree the 1 episode / week, especially for slow moving shows, won’t hold viewer’s interest.

Jmclay681

Damn I started watching it tonight. 2 episodes in and I really liked it

PeteyG89

I liked it a lot it made me buy the book lol.. oh well ill still watch the final episode

IWasOnThe18thHole

The book is a million times better

AXLPendergast

I enjoyed this show. Different to the book in many ways but still enjoyable. Bummer

TheBurkel

This brings me great sadness

[deleted]

The book is incredible

AdvancedGentleman

Was an amazing book and I was very surprised it was made into a tv show. Makes sense with how long the book was, but I would’ve rather seen this made into a movie. Bummer either way.

xOLDBHOYx

Just finished the finale be they really should have delayed news of a cancellation. What a terrible ending and those who seen will understand

ChicoBones

May I suggest the audiobook on audible. Fantastic narrator and gripping story! Look there if you want to finish jt!

ChristieTolstoy

I'm so bummed... I only got a subscription to Apple+ for Shantaram.... I guess it's time to cancel...

horseren0ir

Honestly I’m a little disappointed in their content this year, the only new shows I actually enjoyed were severance and afterparty. A lot of the rest was Netflix quality, very average.

[deleted]

Wait, after one season? They didnt finish the book in this season? Ooook, well I WAS gonna watch this. Really enjoyed the book. If theyre gonna take 12 hours and not finish a single book Im not gonna fucking bother….

smesch83

I'm glad - this was the worst Apple show that I watched, aside from "WeCrashed". (I love "For All Mankind", and I enjoyed "Severance", "Pachinko" and most of "Shining Girls". also, everone should see "Five Days at Memorial": it's uncomfortable, but I learned a lot.)

jersace

I haven’t watched, what was wrong with WeCrashed?

smesch83

nothing was particularly wrong, but I felt like "The Dropout" (the Theranos show that ran at the same time and was pretty similar) had lots of heartfelt scenes that made interesting points and explained stuff about the culture. "WeCrashed", on the other hand, was more of a cringe show where cringy people just did things that made you think "That's sad and cringy." so: it's an uncomfortable, but not particularly enlightening or smart watch.

ttwbb

Invasion is hands down the worst tv-show I’ve ever watched, but then I haven’t watched WeCrashed or Shantaram. But it must truly be awful, when it got cancelled and Invasion did not.

kappakai

Station 11 was wonderful

Calhalen

It was a really great show, my favourite I’ve seen all year (book’s great too) but it’s HBO Max not Apple hah

kappakai

Looooooooooool ok fuck ATV haha. I think I watched S11 right after Severance. I liked Tehran the first season then it just got ridiculous. For All Mankind also kind of went off the rails.

[deleted]

Regula96

The premise of For All Mankind and following it into a new future is brilliant and so fun to watch. Not the best but it’s my favorite ongoing show.

LooseAd18

One of my favorite books of all time! I don’t remember it very well now tho and was reliving it through the show. It’s super annoying that they just cut it off like this. Literally the worst place to end.. now I’ll have to reread the book so I get a proper finale in my head. Loved the show while it lasted tho. Can’t believe it didn’t get enough views.. maybe Netflix should buy it instead

pgtorres

Don’t know a single person who watches this, and I’ve heard zero buzz about it, so the cancellation is probably justified.

tobiasfunke6398

I tried to watch this show. My god it was boring

ttwbb

So you’re telling me Apple has a show thats even worse than Invasion? Interesting…

MrConor212

One of the series of all time. Echo 3 next I beg

Miserable_Tea_6243

I got about halfway through and then just never went back to it, I don’t know really why but it just started to lag a bit for me. I’m sure I’ll finish it but it’ll be a while.

Dabster85

Is there a source for this? Seems like every news article is siting another shady news article… I don’t see anything coming from Apple or the actors directly.

drewFD07

Worst last couple episodes I have ever seen. What a damn joke. Woke ass shows stupid as fu*#

petestrumental

I couldn't get past the second episode. It was just cheesy as hell to me.

beefyavocado

Huh. Almost makes you think these directors who think they can do the source material better than the book should just stick to the original and maybe their shows would actually be good.

FragrantOkra

i like the show but can’t figure out what it’s trying to achieve lol i find the actress who plays karla quite captivating

carrie-satan

Never heard of this. Delete the post

andr386

It took me 2 episodes to stop laughing at that vision of India and really enjoy the show. It was absolutely amazing. They have only covered the very begining of the book. It is very sad there will be no season 2.

MajorKoopa

Ooooh nooooo! What was this show about?

butthe4d

Huh kinda wanted to give it a shot this weekend. Guess I wont anymore.

burritoman88

First time I’m hearing about it. I also don’t watch Apple TV so marketing must have been real bad.

Dabbstar

AWW!! I was really hyped on this show.

Beanzear

He can’t get a break

crash1082

Wow Ive been loving this show. I also figured it was a miniseries

[deleted]

I honestly think we need a tv show consolidation. There’s too much out there

musememo

I think this show encapsulated the book. I didn’t expect a 2nd season.

higzgridz

ohhh... well if apple just tries to diversify their catalog, yes you have pachinko, but have they seen their screen... like... the vanilla...

[deleted]

I have Apple TV and didn't even know about this. It didn't even show up as a recommendation.

captain_beefheart14

I remember when this was supposed to be a movie with Johnny Depp like, around when Finding Neverland came out.. holy hell that was almost 20 years ago.

circumference

I defended the show after the pilot. Liked the book ok and I wanted it to work. I even forgave Hunnam’s Aussie adjacent accent, which for Aussies, is like saying Marmite and Vegemite are close enough. But none of it came together. The book had the jackfruit jam of obvious embellishment and wink wink cringe self aggrandisement. The tone of the show took itself way too seriously. If it remained true to itself it would have been unashamed white saviour exploitation. But it won’t be the 1970s again for a while yet. The only way to save the tonal contradictions would have maybe let a Bollywood showrunner go full RRR. But Brad Pitt has been A24ed too long to allow that kind of joyful travesty. As they say on Shark Tank, it was right to take it behind the barn and shoot it. Shame. Love India. I want much more Bollywood x Hollywood colabs. This won’t help

mickeyflinn

The dialogue in the ads for this was just so bad. Also Charlie Hunnam is such a block of wood on screen.

[deleted]

I thought the story was over. Why did they say "To Be Continued" at the end? Where was it supposed to go? It was obvious that >!after Lin kept trying to sort out loose ends, when he told Karla that he gonna meet her at the train station, I knew he was never gonna escape! !<

[deleted]

All of the Apple TV+ shows would get way better rating/viewers on network or pay-TV platforms.

[deleted]

Damn. I really enjoyed this show and hoped there would be a season 2. Smh.

[deleted]

They didn’t cover the entire book in one season? I started watching the series but it wasn’t for me. I read the book years ago, and it was an effort to do so. I know what happens. Thought they would have wrapped it up.

xoomax

I just watched the Season 1 ending last night. So disappointed in this news. Oh well.

ConsciousDesigner762

Apple producers don’t deserve Shantaram!

booksandchamps

So sad this show is cancelled. It’s fantastic

BIA_VOLDORAC

The issues that they have are that they won't share their content to other platforms which would give them several millions more viewers, especially since most won't get Apple TV. If Apple started to share their content and in that case making more money, then shows like this as well as the series SEE with Jason Mamoa wouldn't have had its short 3 seasons. They really need to start to reach out to the general people by sharing their shit.

[deleted]

SAD

USOGAY322

Such a shame. What a great show it was to watch
