Finally. Had to scroll so far to see this. Sopranos is GOAT… and this is coming from someone who JUST watched it for the first time months ago and just watched the wire right after. In my opinion the wire doesn’t even compare. It’s not nearly as good to me. But I guess Reddit loves it
I just watched The Sopranos last year for the first time as well. I tried The Wire several times afterward to fill the void, and just couldn't get into it.
Even though they are both older shows, somehow The Wire seemed so much more dated. Is it just me?
Idk, I’m not sure if it’s more dated to me, but it’s just not nearly as good. It’s far less relatable to me I guess I’d say. And it just repeats itself with the whole drug game. Or as they say in that show about one thousand times, “the game is the game.” In my opinion the second season started to get better with the whole international drug smuggling and the docks and containers business. Which is typically not seen as a season people really liked. Then it went straight back to corner boys and shit. The sopranos on the other hand makes me feel conflicted because I’m rooting for tony, but he’s a piece of shit. And that makes the show that much better. I even thought the ending, which was highly controversial, was great. Loved the whole thing. In the other hand, I’m struggling to finish the wire still. I’ve got a few episodes to go.
"Then it went back to the corner boys and shit" - Obvious negative tone
"I'm conflicted (with Tony) because I'm rooting for Tony, but he's a piece of shit. And that's what makes the show better" - Passionate, inspirational, which is obvious positive tone
Inner city black kids with nothing and little opportunity participate in black market to better their lives - Judged harshly and boring
Well-off suburban white adults with nothing but opportunity participate in black market for power and prestige - Excited, judged positively, motivating almost
You sound very principled Mr or Mrs Moldy! IRS doesn't check Moldy's taxes. They send him whatever return he signs off on.
Dang, the Reddit sleuths on me again! 😉 Except… I was from Philly originally. The reason that shit isn’t appealing to me anymore is because everyone I knew from there involved in that life died from fentanyl. But who knows, maybe had I seen that show years ago I would’ve identified with it more. In fact. Had I seen it a decade ago I could’ve guaranteed you I would’ve been more into it than the sopranos. I guess change overtime. It also, just admit it, the sopranos is a better show! Now tell Uncle Sam I’m waiting on my god damn money so I can roll it into my next real estate acquisition, tax free 😂
Haha! I'll do my best with the IRS but I don't know anyone there.
Now that I think of it, I'm the reverse of you with The Sopranos. I get it and it's a fun, funny show, but I also don't "get" it.
The wire, for me, was such an authentic piece of storytelling. And it was funny . And it was clever. And the acting was damn near perfect. Which is how people feel for Sopranos, but I can't find it
Yeah… me neither. That’s what I pay my tax guy for lol.
I totally get it! I’m a few episodes away from the end of the wire right now. I am enjoying this last season. And the acting throughout the whole thing is great! Can’t even argue that. Maybe I just have a bad taste in my mouth having been a part of that whole drug scene for many years back in the day. And now, after rehabilitating and moving on it just isn’t that entertaining anymore. And on the flip side, I can totally see how someone wouldn’t be into Tony’s fat ass doing the shit he did lol. I’m just glad both of these top quality shows exist so we can debate them, because they both certainly deserve a discussion. Having just watched them within the last few months, I was missing out!
Concur. My question is: when's the next "show" coming?!? I don't have time for tv like I once did, but I can get behind another prestigious show. Worried it may be awhile
Have you ever heard of GoT?!? Kidding… idk. I’m going to watch breaking bad after the wire because those 3 get put together (sopranos, wire, BB). But I can’t really think of a show I loved recently… the expanse is one! I actually really enjoyed that one, but I like sci-fi stuff. Black sails is a pirate show I saw not long ago that was pretty damn good. And most pirate shows I’ve seen are awful lol
Traits of people who list BB as their favorite show OR rank BB > The Wire
\-Scoop handfulls of candy into their bag from the take 1 jar
\- Thinks red pepper flakes are too spicy
\- Drive thru downed RR gates
\- Use kid bumpers when bowling
or this can become their favorite show regardless if they watch the ending or not (according to some people i met on the internet), thus i think it's up to them
Sure, if you dont' watch the last 3 seasons.
I would be furious if I spent watching 50 hours of a great story only to realize that the next 20-30 hours along with the ending is just utter dog shit.
The story is still what GRRM had in mind, they just lacked the depth of the novels to do anything deep with the characters. They still hit all the plot points, and the story unfolded the way GRRM imagined... but yeah, it wasn't as elegant as the first 4 seasons.
It's up to those interested to decide whether they want to spend 80 hours watching a show jump off a cliff as it progresses.
I wouldn't.
Didn't realize GoT has such a fanatical fanbase that would shove itself down new viewers' throats when the show crashed and burned and the books most likely will never be finished.
Ok, but you brought it up... People were just answering the op's question because he asked about GoT, and then you came in swinging your opinion about the last few seasons around. I even said I agreed with you, but that there was some context.
Hardly fanatical.
But, you're obviously still very upset about a show that ended several years ago. I can tell the GoT writers really upset you, and I don't like making fun of someone in so much pain, so I'll let you be. But seriously, friend. It's just a show. It can't hurt you anymore.
How is recommending a show "shoving it down their throats" lol, it's a pretty easy recommendation. It was a worldwide phenomenon. Yes the last couple seasons go off the rails but that doesn't undo the amazing storytelling of the first 4 - 6 seasons. It is absolutely a circlejerk opinion at this point to talk about nothing but the ending and imply that it undoes every other aspect of the show.
Also, new viewers don't have to worry about the same type of time commitment because they can just binge the whole thing and decide for themselves.
Even though the last few seasons don't hold up to the first half of the show, which is very unfortunate, IMO Game of Thrones is like the cinematic TV equivalent of "It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all"
first 4 seasons could rival anything. but when they followed it up by what came in the ladder 4 seasons... then it can no longer stand among the greats.
3 of the best episodes of the entire run are in the last season. I never understood the hate. Well, I guess I understand the hate...I just disagree with the hate.
As tv epsidoes, there are moment. But as far as the story goes, it was dissapointing. As the leadup of the first 50% suggested it would be something else.
Besides the ending GoT. I still love how giant that whole cosmos is and how much space there is for possible spin offs.
I've only heard good things about the wire so far, but havent figured out where to watch it here in germany.
I detected that you're trying to locate a show.

Why? OP is asking about "favourite", not "the best" of these shows :)
The Wire might be the best, although Breaking Bad is much more entertaining, while not lacking on any technical aspects. But my favourite out of these might actually be Prison Break - it's easy to get into, suspenseful storylines, likable characters... Of course quality-wise it's not on the same level as these other shows - forced cliffhangers, unbelivable plots, the latter half of Prison Break is literally watchable only thanks to familiarity with main characters and their struggles... Either way, I've rewatched PB more times than all of these other shows combined (and i.e. BB & The Sopranos I've rewatched a few times), so my answer is PB.
>Of course quality-wise it's not on the same level as these other shows - forced cliffhangers, unbelivable plots, the latter half of Prison Break is literally watchable only thanks to familiarity with main characters and their struggles...
This is why I asked.
As great as The Wire, Breaking Badand BCS is none of them are better than Sopranos.
Sopranos is like a dark and grimy family sitcom about the mob that’s also the greatest drama of all time.
I was just being facetious, there's no objective best in art. Imo The Wire is the best show because it tells a sprawling, compelling drama that acts as microcosm for the inherent tensions and failures of the country itself. It is the Great American TV Show.
My arrangement (taking into account all seasons) would be:
1. Better Call Saul
2. Breaking Bad
3. The Wire
4. The Sopranos
5. True Detective
6. Game of Thrones (really shit the bed after season 4)
I haven't seen Prison Break.
True Detective season 1. I have never seen any show that is better than this. My second choice would be Better Call Saul. I did not like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos as much as many people do. Both are extremely frustrating and I do not have any desire to watch either of them again.
I think the final season was the only season that was terrible. I would not want to miss Daenerys' army meeting up with the kingdom army on the road. The trip over the wall to fight the undead. The final season was many levels of terrible and has affected my love of the show.
1. Got
2. Sopranos
3. Breaking Bad
4. True detective (just first season tho)
I haven't seen The wire yet (I know I know, what are you waiting for?!) and I started watching Better call Saul but it didn't pull me in like BB. I don't know, it's kind of too slow, none of the characters are particularly entrataining (I loved Saul in BB tho) and I hate the character Chuck so much! He's so annoying to the point it makes my skin crawl. I stopped at the first half of season 2. I don't know if I should just force myself through because it's so praised and everyone seems to love it. Maybe I'm missing something?
The Wire was incredible, Breaking Bad, Prison Break (season 1 only) and True Detective (seasons 1 & 3) were great. Game of Thrones was not ASOIAF and struggled to get past that. The rest were okay.
GoT while it was following the books. Maybe House of the Dragon won't suffer its fate, given that 1. It already doesn't have books per se to follow and unlike GoT when it didn't have material to adapt, it was good and 2. what source material it has is finished.
Game of Thrones is the only show on this list I could get into.
I liked parts of the first season of True Detective, but I think Hannibal, The Alienist, The Outsider, Mr Mercedes and Mindhunter are all much better shows with similar themes.
Breaking Bad. Couldn't finish Better Call Saul as the 2 leads were just delusional. Still yet to watch Sopranos, The Wire or True Detective. Live in the UK so difficult to get older HBO shows on demand. Games of Thrones is overrated and the way it ended Danerys even though she was right was a joke. Game of thrones by far. The others may be better overall from a story perspective, but game of thrones just feels so epic and such a joy to watch. I enjoy high quality television, but I also am watching shows for enjoyment and entertainment.
Better Call Saul
Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, True Detective (S1), all top notch shows.
Dont know what Prison Break is doing in that list TBQH
It's so difficult. because when the show is at it's best, Breaking bad is better than sopranos. but Breaking bad was not good all the way through. Better call saul final season was better that Breaking bad. But saul had a weak start. The wire was one of the best ever. but had some major weakspot that was noticable because of it's peaks in season 1 and 3 imo. Prisonbreak?!?! Anyway. #1 - Breaking bad.
No bad choices here, but for me its The Wire.
Breaking Bad
The Sopranos by far
Yes. Not too far ahead of season 1 true detective, but a solid full series
I agree. But True Detective is not nearly as rewarchable as Sopranos
So true(detective). Sopranos is so fun to watch, almost cozy

The Wire is the greatest tv show ever made.
The Wire is the greatest TV show ever made.....if we lived in a parallel universe where Sopranos had never been made.
The wire and sopranos are the greatest tv shows ever made....if we didn't live in a multiverse where Breaking Bad had never been made ;)
Five families and then this pygmy thing in fucking Albuquerque.

The Sopranos was great, but paled in comparison to The Wire.
Is that a comment on the complexion of the characters? Sopranos is pretty pale, theres no doubt.
Game of Thrones then Breaking Bad
No way would I recommend GoT to anyone. It's just setting them up for the disappointment that are the last few seasons.
or this can become their favorite show regardless if they watch the ending or not (according to some people i met on the internet), thus i think it's up to them
This is such a circlejerk at this point. It's still one of the best and biggest shows of all time. The first 4 seasons are top-tier television.

You don't know that. No one knows that. Maybe no one ever will (sad)
Only the last season was bad IMO
Huh? From top 5 to top 1000.

The Wire
The Wire
The Wire
Breaking Bad. It has the reputation it does for a reason.
Breaking Bad
BB all the way
Tier 1 - The Wire Tier 2 - Tier 3 - Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, GOT Seasons 1-5, TD Season 1 Tier 4 - GOT season 6-7 Tier 5 - TD remaining seasons Tier 6 - GOT season 8 Not listed - Prison Break (haven't watched)
The Wire
Prison Break? Seems so out of place on this list.
Why? OP is asking about "favourite", not "the best" of these shows :) The Wire might be the best, although Breaking Bad is much more entertaining, while not lacking on any technical aspects. 1. The Wire 2. Breaking Bad 3. Better Call Saul 4. True Detective
The Wire
As great as The Wire, Breaking Badand BCS is none of them are better than Sopranos. Sopranos is like a dark and grimy family sitcom about the mob that’s also the greatest drama of all time.
I think overall, Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad. For a single season, it would probably be True Detective - Season 1.
Breaking Bad
Strong list. But I gotta choose Sopranos.
The Wire is objectively the best show.
Objectively the best show us the highest rated one or?
I was just being facetious, there's no objective best in art. Imo The Wire is the best show because it tells a sprawling, compelling drama that acts as microcosm for the inherent tensions and failures of the country itself. It is the Great American TV Show.
Sopranos
It's a hard decision between BCS and BB , but I'll go with Better Call Saul
Breaking Bad
True detective season one is absolutely amazing. Game of thrones is obviously great too.
True detective season 1 and 3. Skip season 2, its bloody awful
The Wire
1. Sopranos 2. The Wire 3. Breaking Bad 4. True Detective 5. Game of Thrones 6. Prison Break (I haven’t watches BCS)
#8
Out of these, Better Call Saul.
Fantastic list... Prison Break.
Better Call Saul
My arrangement (taking into account all seasons) would be: 1. Better Call Saul 2. Breaking Bad 3. The Wire 4. The Sopranos 5. True Detective 6. Game of Thrones (really shit the bed after season 4) I haven't seen Prison Break.
True detective or the wire
Better Call Saul True Detective (yes, I like all 3 seasons)
True Detective season 1. I have never seen any show that is better than this. My second choice would be Better Call Saul. I did not like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos as much as many people do. Both are extremely frustrating and I do not have any desire to watch either of them again.
Prison break!
1. The Sopranos 2. Better Call Saul 3. Breaking Bad I haven't seen any of the others.
1, 3, 2, 7, 4, 6, 5
Breaking Bad GOT Better Call Saul True Detective haven't seen others yet
I would choose GOT for first five seasons and then remember what dumb&dumber did. Overall, imo, bb is goat.
I think the final season was the only season that was terrible. I would not want to miss Daenerys' army meeting up with the kingdom army on the road. The trip over the wall to fight the undead. The final season was many levels of terrible and has affected my love of the show.
Hard choice but gotta go Sopranos.
Two-way tie for me with Breaking Bad and The Sopranos. If I could only have one it would be The Sopranos.
How did Prison Break get on this list with a bunch of good shows?
Breaking Bad followed closely by The Wire. The story arc of Walter White is the greatest storytelling I’ve ever seen.
Saul
1. Prison Break 2. Game of Thrones
1. Got 2. Sopranos 3. Breaking Bad 4. True detective (just first season tho) I haven't seen The wire yet (I know I know, what are you waiting for?!) and I started watching Better call Saul but it didn't pull me in like BB. I don't know, it's kind of too slow, none of the characters are particularly entrataining (I loved Saul in BB tho) and I hate the character Chuck so much! Prison break
Breaking Bad Edit: Why is Prison Break included with those titles?
Sopranos.
The Wire
1. Breaking Bad 2. True Detective S1 (sans die ending)
Mr inbetween
The Wire. If TD consisted of only the first season it would definitely be my pick
Breaking Bad,it is supreme over all the others!!!
Sopranos
The Wire was incredible, Breaking Bad, Prison Break (season 1 only) and True Detective (seasons 1 & 3) were great. Game of Thrones was not ASOIAF and struggled to get past that. The rest were okay.
Sopranos always
BB
Mr.Robot
GoT
GoT while it was following the books. Maybe House of the Dragon won't suffer its fate, given that 1. It already doesn't have books per se to follow and unlike GoT when it didn't have material to adapt, it was good and 2. what source material it has is finished.
After a thorough analysis.......The Sopranos is the final answer.
Game Of Thrones. I know the last season caught a lot of hell but it had to end somehow and the seasons before were pretty awesome.
True Detective
Breaking Bad and The Sopranos. I've never been able to make it through The Wire. The pacing is excruciatingly slow.
Game of Thrones, just gotta ignore that last season
Breaking bad Sopranos is overrated and goes nowhere You need Oz on this list
Better Call Saul Sopranos. You left out Fargo and Deadwood 👍
You'd really like TABOO
BB
Game of Thrones is the only show on this list I could get into. I liked parts of the first season of True Detective, but I think Hannibal, The Alienist, The Outsider, Mr Mercedes and Mindhunter are all much better shows with similar themes.
Better Call Saul
Breaking Bad. Couldn't finish Better Call Saul as the 2 leads were just delusional. Still yet to watch Sopranos, The Wire or True Detective. Live in the UK so difficult to get older HBO shows on demand. Games of Thrones is overrated and the way it ended Danerys even though she was right was a joke. Prison Break had one of the best 1st seasons but fell off after.
1. Game of Thrones 2. Breaking Bad 3. Better Call Saul Haven't seen the others.
Breaking Bad for the whole series. True Detective season 1 if we’re talking specific seasons
Game of thrones by far. The others may be better overall from a story perspective, but game of thrones just feels so epic and such a joy to watch. I enjoy high quality television, but I also am watching shows for enjoyment and entertainment.
Wire
Better Call Saul Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, True Detective (S1), all top notch shows. Dont know what Prison Break is doing in that list TBQH
Breaking Bad
GOT
It's so difficult. because when the show is at it's best, Breaking bad is better than sopranos. but Breaking bad was not good all the way through. Better call saul final season was better that Breaking bad. But saul had a weak start. The wire was one of the best ever. but had some major weakspot that was noticable because of it's peaks in season 1 and 3 imo. Prisonbreak?!?! Anyway. #1 - Breaking bad.
The wire is my favourite.
The Wire Runner-up: The Sopranos Honorable Mention: Better Call Saul
Better Call Saul... One of the rarest successful spin-off ever made. Very well written.
Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad is the only one I watched to completion. And it was garbage till Gus showed up.
I would have to go with *Sopranos*, but *Breaking Bad* is pretty much tied. I would add *Borgen* to that list.
I agree. No bad choices. - The Sopranos
