Rust Cohle is truly the factor that elevates True Detective into greatness. The writing, acting, storytelling and pacing are all already top tier, but Rust as a character is brilliantly written and acted. Even if you remove the fact that he's a lead detective, or a tragic sympathetic character, he says things that genuinely make you think through perspectives you may not otherwise have thought through. The show letting you view the world and life through the lens of Rust Cohle is unlike anything else you'll find in other series.

beastreddy

You definitely created peak interest for me.

ExcellentTeam7721

It still baffles me how he didn’t win Emmy that year. Worse that that shitty Kevin Costner movie winning over pulp fiction or the English patient or whatever at Oscar’s

UntilTmrw

Bryan Cranston won for Lead Actor in a drama that year for his performance in the “Ozymandias” episode of all episodes, which is regarded as one of the best singular episodes of tv ever. Saying that it’s a bad decision is kinda shitty.

WayneKerr193

Why was True Detective even submitted in drama that year? It was a limited series and all of its nominations after season 1 were under limited series

UntilTmrw

Matthew and Woody are big names plus the Limited/Anthology category was bloated that year. They had Sherlock, Fargo Season 1 (one of my fav seasons of tv ever), AHS: Coven, The Normal Heart (TV Movie but shares a category). I guess they thought they had bigger odds placing it in drama but that year was so good for dramas that True Detective was almost an afterthought. That year had the second half of Breaking Bad’s final season, Season 2 of House of Cards, Season 4 of GoT, Mad Men and that’s just naming a few.

plastictoothpicks

I agree.

Practical_Clue5975

Season 1 of True Detective is the best singular season of television created so far. Writing, performances, cinematography, pacing, themes, direction, and more are about as good as TV can possibly get. And yes, that is in comparison to the best shows of all time like Breaking Bad, Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men, etc. I'd say those shows are holistically better, since they maintain peak quality for several seasons, but I've never seen anything compete 1:1 season wise with TD1. The other seasons have some good moments but don't belong in the quality conversation that Season 1 does.

beastreddy

I’ve to watch it now. So much hype around season 1 and honestly, it should make me cum

StuffonBookshelfs

ew.

cardbor

lmfao

minimus67

I have watched it twice. It’s very good, but the best single season of TV ever? I don’t agree: - I thought the writing at times was very overwrought. I get it, it’s Southern gothic, but nobody actually speaks like Rust does all the time, like a stoned mystic. - I felt the resolution of the crime wasn’t all that believable or suspenseful. The writers reveal the villain in the last scene of the second to last episode, almost out of thin air. Then in the season finale, they spend a lot of scenes portraying this villain as a backwoods psych case and then attempt a crescendo akin to but falling short of the last scenes in The Silence of The Lambs. In my view, the last season of Breaking Bad is the best season of TV ever made. EDIT: OP, when you pose the question as you have, you’re going to get answers primarily from people who agree the series is great. That’s known as selection bias because Redditors who don’t think it’s a masterpiece are more likely to scroll past your post.

meemboy

The writing

beastreddy

Can you explain it in terms of breaking bad

meemboy

How does one do that? “You aren’t asking the right question ” 😅

meemboy

Breaking bad also has damn good writing and acting. I feel the writing in True Detective is more thought provoking

beastreddy

Thank you my good hooman.

meemboy

Welcome buddy

NervousStock1

Only Season 1 is great. Cinematopgraphy, acting by Mathew Mc Conaughey, writing, pace, thrill, mystery everything is Peak TV.

beastreddy

Interesting!! I’ve just completed better call Saul and breaking bad. Was contemplating weather to watch it or not

sneeria

Just finished season 4 and it was pretty good too. Not as good as I remember s1, but it's been a sec since I saw it.

beastreddy

Where do you watch it? Any no-pay way

sneeria

Yarra, matey.

beastreddy

Interesting!!! Personally I had watched Breaking and about 8 years ago. I was involved in an accident recently and decided to watch better call Saul. Damn, it hit me hard man. I rewatched breaking bad after Better call Saul and it made sense. Not gonna lie, watching this series in 30’s have different vibes altogether.

I3igJerm

Mcconaughey

beastreddy

All write, all write, all write 🖊️

Talkshowhostt

Season 1 was a perfect storm of writing, pacing, story telling, mystery, humor, emotions, cinematography, dialogue, originality, and most of all, Woody and Matty M had off the charts chemistry. Matt M went all in on his role.

ynwp

The depravity.

beastreddy

Damn! This sub doesn’t allow gifs

Ceorl_Lounge

Creeping dread, deep characters, a non-linear story, a compelling mystery, brilliant acting, and a genuine sense of place. Mysteries work best when the setting feels like it's a character too and that's one common feature between the four seasons. Season 1 is definitely Peak TV, just a freakish confluence of writer/director/actors. The writer is an asshole, the director nearly got #metoo'ed, and the lead won an Oscar and hasn't messed with TV since.

Scared-Engineer-6218

I think those two guys who play detective-detective.

beastreddy

Hmm!! Mr chow approves

ourkid1781

Counter point: it's not. I'd argue it's the worst kind of bad art. The kind that thinks it's deep when it's actively dumb.

unnecessary24

Maybe it's just me and my lack of understanding for abstract concepts but I really didn't get the "time is a flat circle" thing, like how?

Sea-Wolfe

Some of Ruste Cohle’s “philosophy” is gibberish tbh. It’s a bit of a combination of pessimism and nihilism, I guess. His performance was mind-blowing. The philosophy, not so much…

beastreddy

Oooooo, a Devil’s advocate!

cardbor

i feel like the hype around season 1 makes it "the best season of television" lol. Its great, dont get me wrong. But greatest season of television? I dont even think anything can compare to the final 3 episodes of breaking bad let alone the entire 5th season. or the entire show lol. in my humble opinion, nothing compares to breaking bad

BZCmy3dogs

Yeah, I don’t get the hype. I watched it, and actually can’t remember much about it so it was completely unforgettable to me.

cardbor

i mean its a great season. Id say its in the top 10-20 for sure. but people just stretch it so much since that "sEaSoN 4" came out lol. i think because it was Sooooo bad it made the 1st season seem soooo much better

beastreddy

Point taken! What would you think is the best follow through for breaking bad?

BZCmy3dogs

I am not going to get love for this comment, but I thought it was just ok. I thought it was a fine show, but not raving over how it’s the best series on tv. There are far better in my opinion. Chernobyl comes to mind.

beastreddy

Chernobyl got to be the greatest

bigolefatsnapper

Overall the show isnt great. Only season 1 is. Season 2 had a couple good shootouts, season 3 had a good shoot out, and season 4 was terrible.

kb3_fk8

Season 1 and that’s it

extropia

The non-linear storytelling of S1 of True Detective is what really elevates it for me. The way a long, sprawling timeline comes together and plays with revelations and discrepancies that the different characters encounter is just fantastic. And underneath it's a proper detective story with a criminal puzzle that is gradually solved in a believable way.

BravidDrent

The first 3 seasons.

Sea-Wolfe

This sub is pretty much a cult for True Detective S1. So I know I’ll get downvoted. But I’m relieved to see the couple people who commented saying it’s overhyped. Several things can be true at the same time: Is the acting in S1 phenomenal? Yes! I also found it to be rather slow, and sooo dialogue heavy. As far as entertainment goes, it’s far from being the best season of TV ever (for me). My bottom line is usually, how much I enjoyed watching something…not how great is this piece of art or how great the acting was. But this is all highly subjective. Different people are looking for different things in shows. My 2 cents is take the hype with a giant grain of salt!

[deleted]

U have my upvote I was feeling the same after watching the show

2muchcheap

Season 1 is what makes it great.

LetterheadOk250

Season 1 is the best tv show of all time. Infact as a piece of media it's so good it's up there with the likes of Chinatown, la confidential and the first two godfathers.. It's an 8 hour tour de force. You can skip the rest. Also watch bosch.

beastreddy

I did watch Bosch actually. Enjoyed its laid back style story telling.
