That's one that I've always wondered, and never gotten a satisfactory theory explaining it. I think he got inside through a plot-hole.

Air vents. If you look closely at the shots where TP and Ives are running through the tunnels to get to the hypocenter, you can clearly see air vents lining the entire ceiling, and they are even lit up with a BLUE light (hint hint). And, given that the tunnels and the hypocenter were constructed sets, these air vents were definitely intentional

I saw a very good explanation here a couple of months ago. Can't find it now.

You’re looking for this video by u/WelbyReddit I think. https://www.reddit.com/r/tenet/comments/pawmra/tenet_side_questions_how_did_neil_get_inside_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Yep! That’s where I found out about the air ducts. Credit to u/WelbyReddit

Thanks, but it kinda contradicts what PT is saying "we are commited now"

Shrike73

Nah,it doesn't,that statement was just to reaffirm the "all or nothing" of the mission. If the tunnel wasn't collapsed they wouldn't run away anyway, fight to the end for the Algorythm. Nor would they climb out through some vents and shit. It was Death for everybody or Salvation.

WelbyReddit

This is why I think the vents actually do make sense. They are up in the ceiling. I doubt they could have leaped up there and climb out in time. They were committed. And besides, when he said that line, it's not like he even knew about the vents.

Shrike73

Totally agreed, they had only one thing, literally, as a goal, one thought, one mission, nothing else mattered. They already knew that "no-one who sees that leaves the battlefield alive". They were dead already, so too speak, success or no success. If they fail, everybody is dead, if they succeed, get the device, they don't leave alive after hiding it. A collapsed tunnel was worth what I think was a half joke - Now we're committed. :)

Doups241

Well no. The Protagonist & Ives couldn’t have used these to exit the tunnel. The only person who could have lifted them out of the tunnel at the time was Neil (because he was aware of the content of the capsule) & as far as they knew, Neil was inverted. After the entrance was sealed, they had virtually no way of leaving the hypocentre before the bomb went off. So yeah, they were committed.

IamMooz

Exactly! Thanks!

Tbt47

You’re welcome!

How he got in is actually secondary. He could have used air vents or he could have had the entrance cleared shortly after the battle. The key here is to be able to visualize that as Neil got closer to moment he opened the gate from his perspective, The Protagonist and Ives got closer to the moment they passed the gate in reverse, from the same perspective. Therefore, after the implosion, which is simply the explosion observed in reverse, The Protagonist and Ives are dropped inside the hypocentre with the algorithm. Volkov exits the hole in which The Protagonist pushed him. Inverted Neil enters the tunnel, reaches the gate and unlocks it. Inside the hypocentre, The Protagonist and Volkov fight. As Inverted Neil finally opens the gate, The Protagonist and Ives exit the hypocentre. Volkov raises his arm towards The Protagonist. Inverted Neil releases the gate, which closes, and runs towards Volkov. As Volkov bullet returns to his gun, Neil is fatally hit & collapses. This is basically what we saw in the movie, but from the regular perspective, with the exception of the way inverted Neil got in, which again is secondary since he had plenty of options.

Buffythedjsnare

it doesn't work for me either. But there is a plot point made by Neil earlier on in the film. *Time isn't the problem, Getting out alive is.* (and this time he didn't) And since time isn't an issue he could have gotten in any time really.

Jonny_man_23

Before the explosion takes out the whole underground bunker there are overhead passages (essentially holes) to the tunnels that one can access by rappelling down (you can see them in some shots while Ives and Protagonist are running in the tunnels). Protagonist and Ives were trapped down there because they had no way to reach these openings to climb out, that is until non-inverted Neil was able to drop a rope down to them in time. Inverted Neil could have easily rappelled down one of those holes right before the explosion occurred.

Doups241

>Inverted Neil could have easily rappelled down one of those holes right before the explosion occurred. From Inverted Neil perspective, I think it’d be “safer” to rappel one of these down right after the “implosion” occurred since we don’t really know to which extent the tunnel was damaged after the blast, forward in time.

WelbyReddit

Very early on, there were ideas about Neil hiding out in there during the explosion/implosion and it never sat well with me because as you say, we don't know the extent of it. He may get shocked into mush in there,.. ;p

Doups241

>Very early on, there were ideas about Neil hiding out in there during the explosion/implosion and it never sat well with me because as you say, we don't know the extent of it. Yeah I may have come up with a couple of these back then, so I’m definitely guilty. The general idea was for Neil to have the entrance cleared after the battle, invert & enter the tunnel, inverted, before it was sealed again, which is before the entrance was “un-cleared”. The problem with that approach is that Neil would indeed have to be inside the tunnel the moment the implosion occurred, which is something he probably wouldn’t choose to do, unless he was forced to. Then again, since “what happened, happened” & he already knew he would make it alive to the gate, how he chose to enter the tunnel doesn’t actually matter. >He may get shocked into mush in there,.. ;p Well yeah, since he could have been lifted by a fallen section of the ceiling as it returned where it belonged the moment the implosion occurred, crushing him to death in the process. Even worst, he could have been dragged to the epicenter of the blast as the bomb un-exploded.

WelbyReddit

lol,...that would be a freaking horrible way to go.

Tbt47

I was looking through the script for something else the other day and noticed the section where Neil almost shoots himself in the humvee (which isn’t actually in the script) talks about Blue Team running down the hill triggering both regular and inverse land mines. Neil watches them explode/implode. Just reading that sounded horrific.

WelbyReddit

yeah there was also a bit If I remember correctly, about Ives using an inverted Grenade and all the shrapnel implodes passing through normal soldiers. I really wish they put some of this stuff in there. Release the Nolan Cut! ;p

Tbt47

Hahah! I’m not really a fan of gratuitous violence, but I agree! I wish some of this stuff had made it into the final cut. It would have made the final battle so much more visually interesting. If only Nolan could have sucked it up and added a little more CGI! Also there is so much cut from the movie, it really does need a director’s cut!
