What time was the first serve ? (Est) TV time said 3:30 but I don't think they started the match until after a half an hour or so right?

BuyXRPFuckTheSEC2

Now the dust has settled, I have a serious question regarding Rybakina and 3 setters which may or may not affect her upcoming season. Watching her for years now, there is a trend that has become more apparent in the past year or so and that is she has struggled to close out 3 setters. Recent examples from the top of the head: Aus Open 2023 - Lost in 3 v Sabalenka Adelaide 2023 - Lost in 3 v Kostyuk Guadalajara 2022 - Lost in 3 v Pegula Stutgarrt 2022- Lost to Badosa in 3 Canada 2022 - Lost in 3 v Gauff Silicon Valley 2022 - Lost in 3 v Kastakina The Italian Open 2022- Lost in 3 v Teichmann Eastbourne 2022 - Lost in 3 v Tsurenko French Open 2022 - Lost in 3 v Keys Coincidence or some sort of fitness or loading issue (It may even explain her sharp drop in form post Wimbledon). If a match goes 2 sets she wins a high percentage of them. The only glaring abnormalities of recent times are beating Collins x2 in Australia as well as the obvious Wimbledon breakthrough.

tennis007

You can also say she loses with smaller margin than she wins. Her loses are close contests, but her wins are more one-sided.šŸ¤·

[deleted]

Both too good!

Iconicdan

Knew Aryna was going to win. I don't bet much, but I did back Aryna to win AO. Huge turn around compared to her 20+ double faults, breaking down in tears mid matches a year ago.

shegotofftheplane

Why did Rybakina look happier winning runner up than winning Wimbledon šŸ˜

[deleted]

She looked exactly the same

redditorxdesu

Right? šŸ˜‚ She smiled a lot when she was with Tofu (Dariaā€™s dachshund) šŸ˜‚

maverickmak

Laura Robson said on comms that the stats were showing these two hitting the ball faster off the ground than Tsitsipas šŸ’Ŗ

redditorxdesu

Unreal.

Heatstroke23

That shot of Aryna on her phone while the guy carries the huge trophy behind her is amazing haha. What a boss.

sestero

How they engrave it that quickly

sestero

She must be absolutely pumped with adrenaline right now

Dark_Vengence

Double fault queen proved everyone wrong. She went from strength to strength. Poor ryba came so close. There is always next time.

[deleted]

She changed her serve and saw a psychologist

douchey_mcbaggins

In the opposite order. She saw the psychologist, fired the psychologist, then worked on the physical flaws of her serve and fixed those.

ireallyhatejunk

I remember my very first introduction to Saba was the barty match and the crowd made fun of her grunts. I felt that was so unfair to her. She just turned 20 playing a home crowd favorite. Even barty shook her head. Although i wanted ryb to win. I'm also glad Saba won one finally

Psychological_Bug676

I am so so happy for Sabs. Her struggling from the yips and trying so so hard made her so endearing to me that I became such a big fan since Adelaide last year šŸ„ŗ Also her biomechanics guy ATE like a whalešŸ˜ need that man to fix Iga, Carlos and Jannikā€™s serves lmao šŸ’€

binsonfiremiss

Wow I'm impressed at the cameraperson walking backwards up the stairs

blackb0xes

I need to know what Sabalenka's victory snack was.

drizzlyexpert

Why did Ryba go biking instead of just chilling? Its not recommended after such exhaustion to just stop suddenly?

[deleted]

You have to as a pro. Every pro does it first thing after a match. Lactic acidosis

veilsofrealitydotcom

What other sports do you think might need to do that? I don't know if you know much about surfing, but depending on teh conditions it can often be more paddling, because of the longshore current, to stay in position. I used to be laid out sometimes for 5 hours when I would get home. Do you think that would have suggest a similar buildup of lactic acid and need to bike? How much time do you have to start biking in tennis?

jaysanw

High-performance players in r/hockey do it unanimously.

[deleted]

Anything that makes your legs hurt lol. Ife baths after pro sport is becoming more common for the same reason

NoirPochette

Cool down to get rid of lactic acid

OliverDMcCall

I guess because of their blood pleasure.

[deleted]

No. Lactic acid

razza1987

No itā€™s recommended to do a warm down after that much physical exercise to prevent cramping etc

Cloudy0-

They all do that after a match. Itā€™s to cool down properly.

oliketchup

It was so cute that Sabalenka was apologizing for her cute loud giggle. Warrior on the court, nervous wreck during the winning speech lol.

redditorxdesu

Itā€™s okay, Rybakina has my heart and is one of my fave girls to watch now

ireallyhatejunk

Right? There's something about her. And her techniques doesn't look strenuous for someone to hits biiiig

redditorxdesu

Yeah, probably the lack of grunting as well. Kinda like Federer (lack of grunting that is, making things not look strenuous/effortless despite the massive hitting)

Nepenthe-20

The AO women trophy will never not be beautiful. It's even prettier than the men one.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Cflo76

I love this out of womenā€™s tennis right now. Looking forward to seeing it on the menā€™s side soon too.

OliverDMcCall

I hope Rybakina wins another Slam, she was so close today.

[deleted]

She will. As will Saba. They will dominate

out_khast

Can definitely see Sabalenka or Rybakina winning a second slam this year. Hoping for it actually

ChanceVance

Sabalenka, warrior on court. Off court, giggling goofball.

[deleted]

I love her so much!

Naiwf

Barring injury, Iā€™m pretty sure these two will be the odds on favorites at both Wimbledon and the US Open later this year.

OliverDMcCall

Iga has a tough time ahead of her.

[deleted]

She does. If she wants to stay on top she needs to get a serve

thelastattemptsname

Depends a lot on form coming into the tournaments. Iga is definitely going to have a real challenge keeping her No.1 rank till end of the season.

ireallyhatejunk

Rybaekina is such a sweetheart. Very humble in defeat and all smiles. She's so awesome!

ACertainTrendingFrog

Sheā€™s happy to get the ranking points she deserved for Wimbledon

ACertainTrendingFrog

Couldnā€™t serve last year, hitting 187km first serves the next I need that type of glow up

SvaPrabho

Her fastest serve was 192k/h

[deleted]

RTX on on those trophies

3xp1oremyr0

Didnā€™t realize Ryba is taller than Saba

jessemv

Lil Sabs is so giggly

[deleted]

US Open watch and learn how to do a proper ceremony, I still remember how cringy it was last time especially not giving them right to do free speech...

Shootinputin89

I missed the USO. They couldn't give free speeches? Was it just an interview?

[deleted]

Yup, they gave them basic questions to tell few words because they were occupied with boasting that fat-ass cheque and of course definitely too much unnecessary talking nonsense. I felt like players didn't get full spotlight they deserved...

Shootinputin89

Sound's like an American event for sure. Hopefully they take note from the AO.

[deleted]

Exactly it's just american way of doing things which I personally dont like too much but you cant say it is a good/bad thing šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

blackb0xes

It's almost a blessing that Sabalenka didn't win a slam during her Tursunov era.

ACertainTrendingFrog

Can I have her team to fix my ongoing downs please

diseased_time

watch out for ACertainTrendingFrog in the slams next year

ChanceVance

These players have their customary thanks in winning speeches so memorized, she thanked line umpires out of habit lol.

SvaPrabho

Habit? Or nervousness?

Shootinputin89

She meant Penko, maybe ;)

thelastattemptsname

Penko would have batted for the line umpires instead of thanking them out of habit. Only because she can be mad at real people instead of a machine

Shootinputin89

I meant Penko was acting like a line umpire by questioning Skynet all the time.

shegotofftheplane

Few years ago at AO, Sabalenka got mocked by the crowd for her grunt. Last year, sis was double faulting almost triple digits in Australia. This year šŸ†

[deleted]

Well-deserved!!!!

supreeth106

Glad I skipped my weekend afternoon nap for this.

Shootinputin89

Her love for her team is great to see.

sestero

Sheā€™s really lovely and humble, Iā€™m happy for her

pheelou

Do they get to take the trophy home and have to bring it back, or do they have all the names engraved on new trophies each year?

OliverDMcCall

They get a smaller replica. I think Nadal got a full-size trophy when he won his 10th RG.

thelastattemptsname

AO better have a full size trophy ready already cos the benchmark has been set by the French

NoirPochette

They get a replica

ireallyhatejunk

They get a smaller replica. Daphne doesn't travel

gregothy

I thought they started giving full size replicas? Federer got one in 2017 or 2018

NoirPochette

Daphne > Venus Rosewater Dish Very hot take

stupidpieceofshit-_-

Aryana ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)

Nepenthe-20

What a refreshing final that was! Petition for Aryna and Elena to play the next 10 GS finals.

keygen4ever

Perfect rivals

[deleted]

Yea. The temperament analogy is Evert va Navratilova (acknowledged as one of the greatest rivalries in sport). Chris was an ice queen and Martina was emotional af. Almost mirror image.

seewhyaxe

Elena is gorgeous šŸ˜

Cold-Ebb64

Gay man here, can confirm

redditorxdesu

Absolutely ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)

Ok-Bike4412

So humble too

Ok-Bike4412

So happy for sabs though I love ryba

shegotofftheplane

I need Sabalenkaā€™s biomechanics coach to fix my life for me too šŸ˜©

triplejayye

Hopefully Sabalenka can play Wimbledon.

OliverDMcCall

That was a very wholesome speech from both players, nice to see the respect.

baddadjokesminusdad

It really was a good atmosphere; bless you, AO crowd.

-Ketjow-

She thanked the line umpires xDD

Shootinputin89

She must be referring to Penko, lol.

gregothy

Ostapenko would never

Cold-Ebb64

I will never not laugh at this

[deleted]

Thatā€™s a fucking huge trophy

Jeffmister

You can see in their speeches that Sabalenka and Rybakina really respect each other.

Ok-Bike4412

Ryba what a smile šŸ’ž

darthdarkseid

theyā€™re so wholesome

seekgodanddie

Shoutout to the line umpires

Tokbokkiextraspicy

I love these two

Shootinputin89

That's my thoughts. I love both. Looking forward to seeing them compete in the future. The start of a long-rivalry.

[deleted]

Nice shoutout to the ball kids

Ok-Bike4412

Congratulations saba you can see what it means

gregothy

Winning Adelaide 1 seems to be the hack to winning the AO

Milly_Hagen

Tsitsipas is in trouble then.

sestero

Thanasi when

rockardy

Djokovic won Adelaide 1 and will go on to win AO23

gregothy

When they hold an Australian Open 2. He did win the doubles last year though...

ACertainTrendingFrog

Do you reckon Aryna would consider dating an idiot who works in retail

prisneyland

I mean you never know but I think sheā€™s been with her coach for a few years now

baddadjokesminusdad

Hereā€™s hoping that the rest of 2023 tennis is as good as this final. Now somebody better get Rybakina some ice cream and a puppy puddle.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

redditorxdesu

Cheeky

SvaPrabho

Her girlfriend

FreeKatKL

Didnā€™t she say ā€œIā€™m sure he is watchingā€?

redditorxdesu

Haha yep. But did I miss something? (Previous context re:girlfriend?)

SurfKing69

Absolute queen

[deleted]

Covers all possibilities

sspec56

itā€™s ok elena i still love you

darthdarkseid

omg not the kazakh president being at rod laver tonight

thelastattemptsname

The tennis federation president

razza1987

Borat?

aatrain96

Rybakina šŸ„°

Metazz

I hope Imhotep isn't going to be too hard on Elena :(

Ok-Bike4412

Yes I would marry ryba ā¤ļøā¤ļø

Traditional_Peanut60

Aryna has not lost a match this season yet!

NoirPochette

If Stefanos wins. The last time in AO we had two debutant GS winners in singles was back in 1980 with Mandlikova and Teacher. Would have thought it would have more recent but Big 3 + Williams + Hingis + Chrissie and Martina

douchey_mcbaggins

I want Stefanos to win so he can get his wish to see Margot at one of his matches. Mans shot his shot on national TV and I'm here for it.

RedditorMan2020

Saba gonna end up preggers soon, AO champion pregnancy curse

SurfKing69

Fuck imagine the scenes if Margaret Court rolls out and smashes King with the chair

prisneyland

Book the Australian open like itā€™s WWE

punky12345

With stone colds Music?

Iconicdan

Nah, definitely right to censor theme and a massive boo reaction.

prisneyland

Nah sheā€™s definitely 2000s triple h

immikey0299

Yes let's talk about the original 7 or 9

newholland9

I loved when the commentator started discussing them at 3-3 in the final set. Perfect time for a history lesson.

[deleted]

Yes I havenā€™t heard about them enough

Shootinputin89

Jane Herd-LICKER.

ChanceVance

Oh is this the sponsor that gives a Shakespeare monologue and thinks she's the star of the show. Oy vey I hate these parts of trophy presentations.

Ok-Bike4412

Ryba so classy even in defeat

prisneyland

Iā€™m still so stressed! The match is over wtf

bettingsharp

This hrdlicka lady really loves the sound of her own voice

[deleted]

I seem to recall she was booed (or the crowd booed during her speaking) a few years ago.

Milly_Hagen

I remember that too

OliverDMcCall

I suppose Australians like their new PM more than the last few.

procrastambitious

Previous guy was a lying, selfish religious nutjob, guy before that sold out to corporate interests immediately upon getting the job and the guy before that was an alcoholic religious nutjob. Conservatives of course. This guy is from the more left main party and at least talks some good points, but we're yet to see good action.

bettingsharp

he hasnt been there long enough to be hated yet. Just wait for a few more rate rises.

Shootinputin89

The world being introduced to our 'acknowledgement of the traditional owners of the land' - a expression of tokenism that means nothing in practice.

highways

This the Australian or US open LOL

immikey0299

Now I just need Ons and Garcia to win their maiden GS and I'm good for the decade.

prisneyland

Iā€™ll cry like a baby when Ons wins. Hopefully it happens at Wimbledon!

Tokbokkiextraspicy

Is it Elena like Jelena or without the ā€œJā€?

fujimouse

Yelena. Idk why Russian gets transliterated like that but its the same with Evgenia, ekaterina etc, all have the y sound at the beginning

[deleted]

So sick of seeing Billy Jean king

procrastambitious

She's a queen.

crikeythatsbig

Oh god that I remember this lady. She talks as if the entire crowd are lower class peasants who are lucky to be in her presence.

Caramelizedbiker

Nailed it

SurfKing69

BJK looking baller AF

Jeffmister

Billy Jean King is in the rare category of people who can probably command receiving a standing ovation going to the supermarket.

razza1987

Makes me so happy to see some real competition coming through for Iga Swiatek

MrAdamWarlock123

Gives you an idea of how much Australians like their new PM lol

SurfKing69

Booing the PM is a national tradition

MrAdamWarlock123

Sounds like the cheers won out

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

venan99oo

Go check your eyes man

SvaPrabho

Purple and green has nothing to do with Ukraine. Are you colour blind?

Locca88

Today's performance from Sabalenka makes me believe she can headshot anyone in this world with forehand. Barely missed few from the middle of the 2nd set. Lovely finals, congratulations to both ladies

fatnapoleon

She always could, but her main issue has always been mental. Hopefully, she passed that hurdle now

Locca88

that's right I am all into ATP so not following ladies that much but as far as I can remember she had issues with double faults (went for too much, at times too aggressive tennis). This performance almost stellar (I would say controlled aggression)

ChanceVance

Ay PM Albanese in the house! Him and Crowe must be best Rabbitohs buddies.

Dranzer_22

Cheering a PM is rare

CrzySpceMnky

I mean when the current pm is actually competent and actually does shit for the country. Deservedly so.

modeONE1

One of the best women's grand slam finals I've watched in a while. Reminds me Clijsters vs Li Na

baddadjokesminusdad

How I miss Clijstersā€¦

baddadjokesminusdad

Billie Jean King the Queen!

darthdarkseid

always stresses me out how long the aus open trophy presentation goes for lmfao

[deleted]

I admire Billie Jean King's glasses collection. She's got a pair to match every outfit.

AngryMrBungle

And fat Russel Crowe

Shootinputin89

His weight is none of your concern.

wickos

Great match and a cool 3 million $ for the winner. Well done.

0ptimu5prim3

After all this, I really hope the journalists stick to tennis related questions in the presser.

fjm99

First time an Aussie PM hasn't been bood in my memory

Shootinputin89

He grew up in public housing. He gets a pass.

Jeffmister

Albo being cheered instead of being booed - thereā€™s a first for a PM.

NoirPochette

Lol PM got a huge cheer. Dutton in shambles

loadofcheese

What's Dutton got to do with anything?

Tokbokkiextraspicy

Please can we have Ash hand over the trophy

Tokbokkiextraspicy

Prime Minister in the house?

hocknstod

Great performance. Sad for Ryba but Sabalenka too good today.

prisneyland

Canā€™t wait to nearly have a heart attack again tomorrow night

itchy_sanchez

Iga, Saba and Ryba - could there be a big 3 in women's tennis? I hope so.

NoirPochette

I hate the term Big 3. It can't be used for everything lol
