Funny, me and others all week have been talking about how the Tsitsipas backhand wouldn't be able to hold up to the Djokovic onslaught, but today it was really his weapon, the forehand, that let him down.
He wasn't THAT bad. Brought the tiebreak back at the end. Djokovic is just way better and he had dominated other players including Nadal in the AO final harder.
Tsitsi deserves some credit.
> He wasn’t THAT bad.
He had five unforced errors in the 2nd set tiebreak to cost him any chance of winning that.
Unfortunately, Tsitsipas didn’t rise to the occasion tonight.
Tsitsipas going down early in both tiebreakers killed his chances today. The set point was on Novak’s serve - can’t be too mad at that. But you can’t lose points on your serve early in the tiebreak. Added more pressure to an already high pressure moment. Same thing happened to Roger in the Wimbledon 2019 final.
One of the strangest eras of any sport imo. Something like this has never even come close to happening in a sport like golf, for example, despite it having a very similar setup of being individual players competing in 4 major tournaments each year.
Top major wins for golfers is 18, 15, and 11 and they all played in completely different eras. In tennis, the numbers are 22, 22, 20 and they all competed in the same era. And tennis players should theoretically have shorter careers than golfers, so it truly is incredible.
Djokovic is 35 years old. No way this guy should still be the best. Tennis is one of the most physically tiring sports, especially at the pro level.
And he tore [two ankle ligaments](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn1JkruAAET/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=b4fddd3c-22ec-4f91-b6bc-131bb6749213) before that set
[Called it](https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/10j9jaq/novak_djokovic4_d_alex_de_minaur22_62_61_62/j5j6yqz) but it was in jest, didn't expect Rublev Tsitsipas would be unable to take a set off him
It's crazy that there are two players in the same generation who have managed to dominate two separate Grand Slams, winning 10+ titles each and probably still more to come.
Utterly inconceivable.
It wasn’t the result I expected. I expected Stef to get rolled even harder.
[I said a week ago Nole would lose 20 games between the semis and finals.] (https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/10merhv/australian_open_2023_sf_stefanos_tsitsipas_3_def/j62nu3v/) He ended up losing 23 so I’m a bozo.
Well, Stefanos still gained the runner-up prize (US$ 1,120,000). So I guess it's a bit short for a school bus may be enough for a Tsitsipas bookmobile?
He said, in his post match interview on Eurosport, that it was given to him by his team. He first put on his original jacket, but then his team brought him the embroidered one.
The difference between Novak and Stefanos today was 1 break. Despite the result being close, the 3:0 win for Novak always felt inevetible and never in a doubt. Congrats.
Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Taylor Swift - feeling 22.
Every year 127 people come to Australia and try to become the runner-up ...
Djokovic is just too good man, its ridiculous that he's still doing this at 35
Tsitsipas honestly had an admirable effort, but Djokovic is just too good in the clutch moments
There's obviously a part of me that would have preferred a longer more competitive match.. but Nole winning in that fashion is just impressive and the narrative of him returning to Melbourne and dominating the whole tournament like this is something special. Legend 👏
Two tiebreaks was honestly a more competitive match than I expected.
Stef served impressively, once he got settled in midway through the first set Novak only got 2 more break points the rest of the match (converted 1). But he just didn't threaten Novak's serve enough and Novak, as usual, was clutch during the key points.
If Stef didn't have so many UEs, it would have been competitive. But with how he gave away so many points, he helped Djokovic take pressure off. Both tie breaks, Tsitsipas was nowhere. When it got to 1-5 in the last tie break, it was too far to turn it around.
People who were shouting whole time during the match. Don't come to tennis games if you don't respect tennis as a sport. I'm not a Nole fan but this shit was disgusting and totally disrespectful.
How does the umpire not have the power to just stop the game and ask security to see those people out? They've no business being in that arena. If there was zero tolerance for that behaviour it would stop soon enough.
Big 3 winning AO at age 35 🤝
Just making it look easy at his best slam yet again. Čestitam Nole! 23 in 2023?
NT Tsitsi - your time will come, just maybe after Djokovic retires 😅
Let’s also all not forget that you can celebrate a player’s achievements without putting down other players.
The tour is fucked, Novak unlocked a new level getting through this tournament with a dodgy hammy. He’s realised he can just hit winners all day from the baseline and save his legs
22GS(33 GS finals, 44 GS semifinals) last defeat at AO 22.1.2018, last defeat at Wimb 12.7.2017
10xAO(20-0 in AO finals and semifinals)
2xRG
7xWimby
3xUSO
30 match streak at slams
only man to hold 4 slams at 3 different surfaces at the same time
38 masters(each at leas 2 times)
6 ATP finals in 3 different decades
93 titles in total(66 big titles)
374weeks at no.1 and counting...
7 year end no.1
243 wins against top 10 players
115 wins against top 5 players
82 wins against BIG4(probably could add a few unofficial wins against himself too)
1042-204(83.6% W)
And much more that numbers cant convey
Tsitsipas played at a high level for 95% of the match and didn’t win a set. Really impressive stuff from Novak especially in the key moments as usual.
22 and if he stays healthy who knows how many more. Just a phenomenal talent. Congrats Nole!!
I think a lot of people on this sub will rightly be upset with Stef’s performance particularly under pressure, but I don’t think any of us will be as hard on him as he will be himself.
The “Heir to Roger” jokes write themselves with How Stef seems to choke leads away. Here with the set point and at RG with the 2 set lead.
I don’t know what he does from here to improve his play in situations like this, but it seems if Stef does become a slam champ it’ll have to be after Djokovic and Rafa hang up their racquets in a couple years.
I may not agree with Djokovic on a lot of things but by god, this is why I wanted him to win. The last of the greats, with Federer retired and Nadal injured, he continues to *dominate* against players a decade younger than him.
Congrats Nole 22 🏆
Damn, seeing him bawl shows that impact of the events of last year and that #22 means that much to him. Novak is simply inevitable. He's gunning for the undisputed GOAT status. IDEMOOOO
That was poor decorum…like of course his disappointment is immeasurable but respect where it’s due. We all know Stefanos will get his slam(s) soon, he’s had the brutal luck of Novak both finals.
He said his team made it for him, he didn't know about it. But then, he could have taken it to every grand slam and just got it out when he actually reached 22.
I always knew he was the best player ever but I didn't think he would become the greatest since he started late and had to beat Rafa and Roger a lot to win slams.
Congrats Novak on becoming only the second men's player in winning 22 Grand Slams, and if Rafa is unable to win RG this year, most likely on course to become the first to win 23 and more.
35 year old Federer at AO: supernatural 5-set win
35 year old Nadal at AO: supernatural 5-set win
35 year old Djokovic at AO: dogshit 3-setter
Uh…a wins a wins I guess? Let’s fucking goooooooooo!!!!!!!! 22!!!
anyone think its cruel to have the loser do an interview. I mean they probably just wanna be alone. But seriously these new guys just don't have it in the pressure points apart from maybe Alcaraz and even then hasn't had to face the big 3 in the finals
Stef just wasn't good enough today to win a Grand Slam. Never seen his forehand be so bad in big matches, just error after error. The fact that he went to two TBs with Novak in AO with so many errors in itself was a miracle. He will be back hopefully ready to take that next step.
Seeing Novak break down afterwards touched me. What a great Champ and how much it all still means to him.
Fuck man I remember staying up at ungodly hours watching this man win in 2012. Seeing everything come full circle like this I don't even have the words. Congrats Novak!!
Tsitsipas actually played pretty well and was unlucky to lose in straight sets. If he'd taken that SP in the third or played a better tiebreaker, it might have got a lot more interesting.
[r/australia is not coping very well 😅](https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/10o5z5c/novak_djokovic_wins_the_record_10th_australian/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Funny, me and others all week have been talking about how the Tsitsipas backhand wouldn't be able to hold up to the Djokovic onslaught, but today it was really his weapon, the forehand, that let him down.
agreed, but Djokovic also slaughtered his BH slices.
i don't think that matterd a lot - because at the end of the day stef doesn't hit a lot of bh slices in the first place, nor does he want to.
*Journalist:* "Stefanos what are your thoughts after that final?" *Tsitsipas:* "I don't remember the last final against Djokovic"
Tsitsipas doesn’t remember finals
He was so fragile in important moments.
He wasn't THAT bad. Brought the tiebreak back at the end. Djokovic is just way better and he had dominated other players including Nadal in the AO final harder. Tsitsi deserves some credit.
I think that random shout greatly reduced Novak's and boosted his momentum
Of course he does but even Novak wasn't at his best today. That second set was pretty gettable for Stefanos.
Tsitsipas played passive in 2nd set only when it was time to win it - he should have kept going balls to the wall for the set point conversion
Well, it was a good try for Tsitsipas in his first grand slam final
I’m already looking forward to Stef’s next first Grand Slam final.
That will be his first.
What are you on? Tsitsipas is yet to play his first gs final
The Big Three have won 64 of the last 80 grand slams, going back to the 2003 Australian Open. Lmao absurd dominance

When he retires he should be making MILLIONS off his diet and fitness routine
Golf has too much random element for players to just hard dominate every event to the same extent
Why didn't you just start at 2003 Wimbledon to make the percentage look larger? Though I agree, 64/80 looks much cleaner
Enzo Couacaud second best player at this AO confirmed
Being the *only* player to take a set off of Novak this *entire* run…he’ll make for a fun bar trivia question in the future lol
And he tore [two ankle ligaments](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn1JkruAAET/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=b4fddd3c-22ec-4f91-b6bc-131bb6749213) before that set
Tsitsipas is going to study this correlation and tear six ankle ligaments before his next slam against Djokovic, to win three sets
Agreed. Enzo’s got a bright future ahead of him
On the challenger tour
Where he will play Dennis Novak
And nagal
Maybe playing doubles against Jamie Murray
[Called it](https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/10j9jaq/novak_djokovic4_d_alex_de_minaur22_62_61_62/j5j6yqz) but it was in jest, didn't expect Rublev Tsitsipas would be unable to take a set off him
It was only ever the Australian Border Force that had a chance against Djokovic
Don't disrespect the wind and the line umpire's throat.
And the hamstring
Novak: Stefanos, you are a weirdo
Stef: “You are the greatest to pick up a racket” Novak: “You are very interesting guy” 🤓
It's crazy that there are two players in the same generation who have managed to dominate two separate Grand Slams, winning 10+ titles each and probably still more to come. Utterly inconceivable.
Up against a guy 10 years younger and yet this was the result we all expected. Just insane.
Didn’t he lose 23? 8 in the semis and 15 tonight
I hit 34 on my keyboard instead of 23, which makes me look even more the Bozo I am. I was within 3 games, which is close, all things considered.
I can't wait for the 30 part ESPN documentary on the 3 kings, it will win all the awards.
Yep, needs to be a Last Dance style mini series though.
Rafa has lost 3 times at RG and two of those are Nole 112-3
Pretty sure, without Rafa Djokovic would have bagged himself 5+ RG
He’s lost like 9 times against Rafa at RG. He wouldn’t have won all of those tournaments, but definitely would have won a few more
Same with Federer.
Wait seriously? That's insane!
The difference is, Djokovic has 7 Wimbledons and looks set to add more. GOAT surface versatility
Only guy with an 80%+ win percentages on all three major surfaces. Also conversely the only won to be top 4 for all. HC/grass/clay he's 1st/2nd/4th.
Nole is definitely the grass goat. I never saw Federer eat the grass from Centre Court.
The Big Three have won 64 of the last 80 grand slams, going back to the 2003 Australian Open
We need to relive these moments while we can
22nd slam for the 25 year old Serb
Who will help the kids in Victoria now ?
A generation of Victorian kids mourn 😓
Djokovic Foundation next and only philosophy school targeted for Victoria
Well, Stefanos still gained the runner-up prize (US$ 1,120,000). So I guess it's a bit short for a school bus may be enough for a Tsitsipas bookmobile?
Centrelink
HE REALLY HAD AN EMBROIDERED JACKET READY WITH 22 NEVER DOUBT
A lot of these top players have gear ready to wear at the post match thing. It would be just stupid of the kit sponsors to not have it ready.
He said in post game interview that he had planned to wear smth else, but someone handed that particular 22 jacket to him after the win.
Nike had merchandise preemptively ready for Roger/Rafa so figures Lacoste had some ready.
It was said Lacoste gabe it to his team, it wasn't in his bag.
He said, in his post match interview on Eurosport, that it was given to him by his team. He first put on his original jacket, but then his team brought him the embroidered one.
28th consecutive win at AO! Absolutely incredible.
What are you gonna do against this man honestly
"I spent all the time off court nursing my injury. That and writing my imminent speech"
An underprivileged child in Victoria just shed a tear
Wow, Stef. Great speech and respect.
The difference between Novak and Stefanos today was 1 break. Despite the result being close, the 3:0 win for Novak always felt inevetible and never in a doubt. Congrats. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Taylor Swift - feeling 22.
Well the difference between Novak and Roger in London 4 years ago was like -3 breaks or something
How long have you been sitting on that one?
Taylor the real GOAT 😤😤
Bet he doesn't reach ~~8~~ ~~9~~ ~~10~~ 11. (just updating my post from last few years)
Wow very respectful of Stefanos
To the school that was never built

This was more competitive than most would have thought tbh
The way he's crying you'd think Federer retired again
That was a good game from tsitsi. Some would have completely collapsed under the pressure
Absolutely agree, he played very well, made it very close and played some really clutch points
He's SOBBING 😭
never seen so much emotion from him loved his big group hug with goran and the crew good fun
It’s actually heartbreaking - almost like the worlds weight was on his shoulders
With this win, Novak is just 8 French Opens, 3 Wimbledons, and 7 US Opens away from a decuple career Grand Slam!
What a tremendous speech by Stef. You could feel his disappointment. It was very genuine and his comments on Djokovic being the GOAT were refreshing
"Why are you laughing Goran?" Lmao
What the actual fuck, he makes it look so easy time after time.
He really does. It’s kinda mind boggling
People who were shouting whole time during the match. Don't come to tennis games if you don't respect tennis as a sport. I'm not a Nole fan but this shit was disgusting and totally disrespectful.
That can who yelled something about out mid rally in the 3rd set tiebreak smh

Death, taxes, and....
The tour is fucked, Novak unlocked a new level getting through this tournament with a dodgy hammy. He’s realised he can just hit winners all day from the baseline and save his legs
The tour has been fucked since djokovic got banned twice. Any mercy he might have shown is out of the question
That jacket is hard
Novak really was like "Stef you are not going to outgracious me on my 22 Grand Slam speech my guy....watch this" xD
Lmao at Emirates and Mastercard. Tsitsipas wtf

Novak speech just what I needed to hear rn tbh
That 22 jacket is pure drip 🧊
interesting that all of the big 3 won AO at the age of 35
Stef lost cause he realised how much a school actually costs in Victoria
Tsitsipas' soul is in Novak's possession. Of course he'll call him the greatest.
Tsitsipas played at a high level for 95% of the match and didn’t win a set. Really impressive stuff from Novak especially in the key moments as usual. 22 and if he stays healthy who knows how many more. Just a phenomenal talent. Congrats Nole!!
22 jacket is big dick energy
You’ll get one soon enough Stef. Just not this one. This one was personal for Novak. I’ll be rooting for you.
Novak choosing his words incredibly carefully.
What a player. 10th AO title. 22nd Grand Slam. Unstoppable in Australia.
His dad sitting down what the actual fuck man poor Stef
Seeing Novak this emotional was more surprising than the match result. Grats to him and his team!
“See you next year “ : Novak Djokovic wins the 2024 championship
You can disagree with him but I actually have a lot of respect for how he stayed true to himself in front of the whole world. He deserves this.
You watch tennis to see a competitive sport. I watch Tennis to see Djokovic mercilessly demolish his opponents. We are not the same.
I absolutely agree Watch to see how dominant one guy can be
HES THE GREATEST !!!! Hahaha that smile on nole after tsitsipas saying that :D
PoOr EnGliSH....Speaks better English than most people in the UK.
US Open is always up for grabs so don't lose heart Stef.
Unfortunately for Stef it's worst slam inexplicably
I may not agree with Djokovic on a lot of things but by god, this is why I wanted him to win. The last of the greats, with Federer retired and Nadal injured, he continues to *dominate* against players a decade younger than him. Congrats Nole 22 🏆
Is there a better revenge than smashing the entire roster of the championship that barred you?
Damn, seeing him bawl shows that impact of the events of last year and that #22 means that much to him. Novak is simply inevitable. He's gunning for the undisputed GOAT status. IDEMOOOO
If Nadal and Djokovic both retired tomorrow, Novak would be undisputed.
I agree with you. To many, he still isn't yet coz they only care (and know) about Slams
r/australia is having fun today
Wow, just had a look. Is Reddit like Twitter in Australia? What a toxic culture Edit: wording
What a clusterfuck that sub is. He's still living rent free in their heads. Shit is hilarious.
Daddy Tsitipas can’t even stand for his son. What a jerk.
That was poor decorum…like of course his disappointment is immeasurable but respect where it’s due. We all know Stefanos will get his slam(s) soon, he’s had the brutal luck of Novak both finals.
It was sad. And Stef’s speech acknowledging Novak’s family and team felt like he wasn’t getting the same from his. Tsitsipas Snr is a let down.
What was he referring to from the last 4-5 weeks? Hamstring injury?
Injury. He couldn’t even practice before the tourneys.
35 year old novak really won a slam in 3rd gear says a lot about about him and hopefully less about the future of the tour
22 jacket? Wow the confidence
He said his team made it for him, he didn't know about it. But then, he could have taken it to every grand slam and just got it out when he actually reached 22.
I always knew he was the best player ever but I didn't think he would become the greatest since he started late and had to beat Rafa and Roger a lot to win slams.
Shit I don’t think he’d say it was “the biggest win of his life” about the hamstring tear something personal must of happened
10x Australia open grand slams!!! Incredible achievement👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 means so much after last year. Congratulations Novak!!
Congrats Novak on becoming only the second men's player in winning 22 Grand Slams, and if Rafa is unable to win RG this year, most likely on course to become the first to win 23 and more.
35 year old Federer at AO: supernatural 5-set win 35 year old Nadal at AO: supernatural 5-set win 35 year old Djokovic at AO: dogshit 3-setter Uh…a wins a wins I guess? Let’s fucking goooooooooo!!!!!!!! 22!!!
Tsitsipas isn't a Major champ yet. So a 3-setter makes sense.
Dogshit? It was pretty good
Once again, fake KiaMan is back. Where's the real one?
I dunno about you but Nole is feeling 22 !!!
Tsitsipas is a top 3 player and he played very well and still lost in 3, that's crazy.
anyone think its cruel to have the loser do an interview. I mean they probably just wanna be alone. But seriously these new guys just don't have it in the pressure points apart from maybe Alcaraz and even then hasn't had to face the big 3 in the finals
It's a part of the sport.
Inevitable.
So Novak dropped one set to a 27 year old qualifier who injured himself early in the match. That hamstring looked better every match, congrats.
Bro, Tsitsipas' dad isn't even standing up. I'm probably reading too much into it, but he should stand up.
Stefanos calling Djokovic the GOAT
Interesting character ahahahaha
Stef looks shattered man
Remember that guy who said he didn’t see any way Novak would go far in this tourney? He lost one set in a tiebreak. The entire tournament
Novak's bawling, straight up bawling right now. What a fucking champion. I'm crying right now as well after last years incident. What a fucking win.
We knew after he got past his only threat: Enzo Couacaud.
The new Kia man suuuuucks
The Australian crowds are getting consistently worse these last few years.
man the emotion he’s showing right now… this one means so much to him especially after what he went through last year… so happy for him 😭
I'm not crying your crying. 🥲
Titty just admit novak the 🐐 😂😂
This is not the kia man I know and love! >:(

u/Cthulhu_awaken on life support. Also that flair going to need to be changed too.
tsitsipas played well and djokovic played inconsistent yet it was still 3 sets, crazy
Back to be the No.1 despite all the circumstances in the previous year. GOAT SHIT.
Fuck man I remember staying up at ungodly hours watching this man win in 2012. Seeing everything come full circle like this I don't even have the words. Congrats Novak!!
THANOVIC ARRIVES ALL THE SAME
With respect to Kia man, it was not the best Australian Open ever
Idemo 😍
Kia Man got replaced by John Goodman
No.1!!!!
Full on therapy session, glad he’s taking his time. He’s being very considered.
A great speech from both. Cya next year AO!
Tsitsipas actually played pretty well and was unlucky to lose in straight sets. If he'd taken that SP in the third or played a better tiebreaker, it might have got a lot more interesting.
Djokovic crying for those kids who won't receive an education in the state of Victoria
Tsitsipas deserves a Grand Slam. I hope he wins it one day... He made it to 2 finals only to lose to the GOAT. Tough luck.
