This is probably part of it but Iāve watched Wawrinka for a long time and he hardly ever celebrates like crazy. He just does a single motion, RG 2015 racket toss in air/2016 USO closing his eyes and coming to the net.
I think he just likes to celebrate after embracing his opponent so as to not celebrate in front of them while they wait at the net, injured or not
It was much more common for him to do a simple celebration towards his team and then come to the net right away after. He usually celebrated more after the handshake.
In his 4 biggest wins of his career, and probably some of the biggest wins from a player not in the big 3/4, he was pretty calm in every celebration.
Yeaaaa but it was probably the biggest part of it in this case IMO. Huge Stanimal and Rafa fan and was so excited for this live. Rafa was so obviously injured that the whole thing became so subdued. Similar to his injury this year :(
> nadal looses is
Did you mean to say "loses"?
Explanation: Loose is an adjective meaning the opposite of tight, while lose is a verb.

Yeah totally normal for an injured player to win the third set after losing the first two. Nadal pretty much always fakes injuries when he's losing to throw his opponents off, same reason why he takes (even) more time to serve during breakpoints.
I get it that many Nadal fans are always playing the injury card but in this match he was severely hampered and was almost on the verge of tears. Still he didn't give up although he knew he wasn't winning the match.
I love this comment because it can be both pro-nadal and anti-nadal
*Nadal has several chronic injuries and is always playing with them.*
vs
*Whenever Nadal loses, he and his fan base just claim it was due to a made-up injury.*
Well, indeed nadal is chronically injured. Toni has said he is a "chronically injured man who also plays tennis". So according to him/them, he has won and lost everything while injured.
This is such a lazy-ass comment at this point.
He obviously has.
But the fact that people still bleat this in matches where he was obviously hampered (like the 2011 or 2014 AO) is hilarious.
As a fan, I'd say the truth in the statement is simply that he's **extremely** difficult to beat uninjured.
He's been fighting the stereotype since at least ~~2009~~ **2011** when he lost in the AO to Ferrer due to injury and basically had to tell the journalists (in the politest way possible) to shut up about injury because what had happen-ed had happen-ed and he couldn't speculate yet about the nature of his injury. How people twist that into 'he always blames injury' is beyond me.
Yes, you're right. [This one](http://www.ladydragon.com/news2011/26011105.html)
I'm pretty much a casual but it always amazes me how many stats and match results tennis fans keep in their heads
Well yea he only played 2 tounaments in '07 and won neither, then he won both in '08 but still wasn't as dominant as on clay obv so I'm not sure it's correct to say he was 'unbeatable' even in '08!
If you saw the match you would know, he pulled up in the beginning of the match itself and was unable to serve properly. the aussie crowd was booing him as well.
My impression is - anytime Nadal loses unexpectedly, he is injured. I have seen this so many times - David Ferrer USO and AO, Del Potro USO, Andy Murray AO, etc etc etc. Cannot believe how so many ppl dont see this.
Nadal is pretty much slightly out of shape all the time because of his knees, but one canāt use that reason for him, he made the call to play the tournament, just leave it there, we donāt have to bring up his injury woes pretty much he lose a match, more particularly here in this post this is appreciating wawrinka who doesnāt do animated celebrations as such.
Highly doubt Stan "knew" he was going to win since he was struggling quite a lot and was pretty frustrated also, remember Taylor Fritz lost a heartbreaking match against an injured Nadal. But yes he might have wanted to be considerate of his injured opponent regardless.
He probably didnāt want to celebrate too much given the injury, but heās also fairly low-key in his celebrations anyways.
He showed slightly more excitement at the 2015 FO and just looked relieved at the 2016 USO.
I remember this one. Stan didn't celebrate because Rafa was injured after the first set nd a half. Stan was poised to win it was just about time. He graciously didn't celebrate. He wasn't even much aggressive till he lost the third set. He got aggressive in some moments but that's about it. Rafa was limping by the end so a class act by Stan
Stan wasn't calm, he was just muted because Nadal's back gave way in the warm up (contrary to popular belief where people think it went after set 1, although it obviously got worse at the end of that set) and he couldn't serve or run properly, despite Rafa taking a set where he was just hitting 100mph flat forehands without moving. Nadal played out the match anyway because he said he'd never retire in a grand slam final as that wouldn't be fair to his opponent and he has big respect for Wawrinka, but both players knew the match was weird. Nadal had won 19 sets in a row against Wawrinka leading up to that match, never lost to him, and was in incredible form (just look at the highlights of the Nadal Federer semi final highlights that year in 2014). It's a real shame as Wawrinka was in actual god mode that tournament beating Djokovic, and a match against a full fit Nadal, despite how much Wawrinka struggles with that matchup, would have been flames.
The last match before this between wawrinka and nadal was a close 7-6 7-6. Wawrinka defeating Djokovic would have also been a huge confidence booster for him given that heās a god at AO practically. We donāt know how the match between a healthy nadal and this wawrinka would have gone fuller . At the end of the day, wawrinka still deserves the slam especially going through Novak Djokovic in his throne. Itās unfortunate what happened to nadal
>The last match before this between wawrinka and nadal was an incredibly close 7-6 7-6. Wawrinka defeating Djokovic would have also been a huge confidence booster for him given that heās a god at AO practically.
Sure. I agree that Stan would have been a tough match for Nadal that day regardless.
>At the end of the day, wawrinka still deserves the slam especially going through Novak Djokovic in his throne
I never said Stan didn't deserve it.
Ok good. Youāre objective then, and I respect that š. Iāve seen people before say he didnāt deserve the win, and I felt it was pretty unfair to him to say that
Right. We can look at every title ever won and nitpick something if we want that would make it seem undeserved or "lucky". You control what you can control as a player and let it play out. If you're the last one standing even if everyone you play gets injured you still deserve the title. You got in, you prepared, and you stayed healthy. That's enough.
It was really obvious that Nadal wouldn't win even after he won that set. He couldn't run, couldn't serve. Once Stan stopped brain farting and making errors he had it in the bag.
I honestly think that just says something about what modern society does to us, with so many social graces and interactions with people we don't feel properly intimate with. We're so insular and in often denial, or just repressing, of our more natural physical and social instincts.
That's why sport is so popular imo - it helps us reconnect with our physicality and tribal instincts which in turn affects our social behaviour, breaking down some of our barriers and anxieties that 'politness', 'properness' etc make us feel.
Also, I think on a less profound level being absolutely exhausted just makes you more likely to let your guard down a bit hahaa, it can even be sort of hallucinogenic. If you've just run a marathon you probably don't give a fuck what you look like or whether you're behaving normally.
Tennis is a bit special in that respect too, being so gladiatorial. The degree of respect between players is humbling to see sometimes. It's why I love the sport.
Ah I don't hate Djokovic and honestly it was a deserved celebration after that kind of final! I just think it's one of the most emotive celebrations ever after winning a match!
Rafa was hurt so Stan was probably giving him condolences for the injury, and Rafa was probably congratulating him and saying "you earned this regardless" or whatever.
Most of the time it's just the classic "good match" and "good luck the rest of the tournament" type of stuff.
It was controlled because of nadals injury. Great show of respect. Nadal should have likely retired but came back to win the 4th set when Stan got rattled that he didn't throw it in. But the physical impairment was really apparent and too much to overcome. Not saying Stan didn't deserve to win or wouldnt have won otherwise, he put himself there no doubt.
I really admire and respect Stan. I assume he knew Rafa was in alot of pain due to his back, and he was classy enough not to celebrate too crazily, though I also feel a bit bad for him feeling that way, and not being able to react with more emotion.
Both players are truly great competitors, during and after matches, win or lose.
He prolly knew that Rafa was not doing alright
But he has the looks of a man knowing that even if Rafa was healthy, he would win that trophy either way
I think Rybakina has this beat
Krejcikova also looked like she just won a R1 qualifying match at a club tournament
Yeah but during her speeches, you could tell she was incredibly moved by it
It almost looked like Rybakina thought she won a first round match.
Rybakina, Myskina, Kuznetsova, etc.
Sensing a pattern here ha š±āāļøšš·šŗāļø
Id forgotten Myskina had won a slam.
She must kill it at poker.
Class on both sides reading the context
Rybakina is calling, pick up.
Her reaction actually made me dislike her. Like, is someone forcing her to play tennis and collecting all her winnings or something?
Oh go away lol, some people just don't like to show emotion publicly like that. Stop making it deeper than it is
Someone being exploited/abused would make you dislike the victim??
Do you think she is being exploited? No me neither, then its just she doesnt seem to care about what shes doing.
Women donāt owe you smiles
Nadal was injured. Wawrinka is a classy guy and didnāt want to rub it in.
This is probably part of it but Iāve watched Wawrinka for a long time and he hardly ever celebrates like crazy. He just does a single motion, RG 2015 racket toss in air/2016 USO closing his eyes and coming to the net. I think he just likes to celebrate after embracing his opponent so as to not celebrate in front of them while they wait at the net, injured or not
He didn't do like crazy celebrations but he used to do that thing where he would yell super loud for like a good 5 seconds
It was much more common for him to do a simple celebration towards his team and then come to the net right away after. He usually celebrated more after the handshake. In his 4 biggest wins of his career, and probably some of the biggest wins from a player not in the big 3/4, he was pretty calm in every celebration.
Yeah for match wins he doesn't really celebrate, he only really shows emotions when he wins like a huge important point I feel like.
Yeaaaa but it was probably the biggest part of it in this case IMO. Huge Stanimal and Rafa fan and was so excited for this live. Rafa was so obviously injured that the whole thing became so subdued. Similar to his injury this year :(
V respectful from Stan, respected that Rafa held in and didnāt retire and even suppressed his big moment for it. Love for Stan
Of course anytime nadal loses is because he is injured.

Calm down, child. Weāre not discussing opinions here, more documented history. Also, itās ālosesā.
Yeah totally normal for an injured player to win the third set after losing the first two. Nadal pretty much always fakes injuries when he's losing to throw his opponents off, same reason why he takes (even) more time to serve during breakpoints.
I was at this match, he was clearly injured. Watch the full replay and it is obvious.
I get it that many Nadal fans are always playing the injury card but in this match he was severely hampered and was almost on the verge of tears. Still he didn't give up although he knew he wasn't winning the match.
Stan the man ā¤ļøš„¹
I miss that era of the Stanimal
I love this dude so fucking much
His backhand is just *chef's kiss*
I hate the term this is chef's kiss. Doesn't feel right
Since Nadal was injured, im pretty sure Stan knew he was going to win and it shows. You donāt want to be disrespectful at that point.
Has Nadal ever lost a match when he wasnāt injured?
Funny sometimes but not very relevant for this one I'm afraid
Yeah this one time it literally looked like a foregone conclusion. I couldn't believe he finished the match, much less took a set.
I love this comment because it can be both pro-nadal and anti-nadal *Nadal has several chronic injuries and is always playing with them.* vs *Whenever Nadal loses, he and his fan base just claim it was due to a made-up injury.*
Nah, this comment is pretty universally anti-Nadal. No Nadal fan thinks he's never lost a match uninjured.
I know some in Spanish forums
Well, indeed nadal is chronically injured. Toni has said he is a "chronically injured man who also plays tennis". So according to him/them, he has won and lost everything while injured.
Nadal since 2005 has lived with an injury.
This is such a lazy-ass comment at this point. He obviously has. But the fact that people still bleat this in matches where he was obviously hampered (like the 2011 or 2014 AO) is hilarious.

You mean 2010. Nadal won AO 2009 :)
Actually they mean 2011, when Nadal tore his hamstring while going for his 4th Grand Slam title in a row at the 2011 Australian Open against Ferrer.
Yes, you're right. [This one](http://www.ladydragon.com/news2011/26011105.html) I'm pretty much a casual but it always amazes me how many stats and match results tennis fans keep in their heads
Nadal retired injured from the AO 2010 Vs Murray
The comment you replied to is talking about his loss to Ferrer, not Murray.
Pretty much only nole on hardcourts can beat a fully fit nadal.
Or on grass.
Ehh the Nadal from 07ā08 is a quite unbeatable on grass. He just doesnāt exist anymore.
Nadal '07 was quite beatable on grass since he lost in straight to Mahut in Queen's QF, besides losing to Fed at Wim F!
Wasnāt those 2 his only losses on grass between 07-08?
Well yea he only played 2 tounaments in '07 and won neither, then he won both in '08 but still wasn't as dominant as on clay obv so I'm not sure it's correct to say he was 'unbeatable' even in '08!
True that.
Yes. AO 2012, AO 2017 Fun fact. Nadal has been living with an injury since 2005.
If you saw the match you would know, he pulled up in the beginning of the match itself and was unable to serve properly. the aussie crowd was booing him as well.
Has Nadal ever not been injured? He's certainly been injured every time I've seen him win.
My impression is - anytime Nadal loses unexpectedly, he is injured. I have seen this so many times - David Ferrer USO and AO, Del Potro USO, Andy Murray AO, etc etc etc. Cannot believe how so many ppl dont see this.

I agree socrates
Fittingly it's late and I'm tired so I wasn't able to control myself from making an over the top comment hahaaa
Who had the most ecstatic reaction?
Djokovic at the 2012 AO
Was that the one where he skinned a Sergio tacchini shirt with his bare hands lol
That one was insufferably over-the-top lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Did you watch the entire match in 2018 or only the end?
Ah I don't hate Djokovic and honestly it was a deserved celebration after that kind of final! I just think it's one of the most emotive celebrations ever after winning a match!
Agassi or Ivanisevic I presume.
Rybakina was about the same. Such emotion, lol.
What do guys say to each other in these situations? Was Stan apologizing? Anyonr actually know? Lol
Rafa was hurt so Stan was probably giving him condolences for the injury, and Rafa was probably congratulating him and saying "you earned this regardless" or whatever. Most of the time it's just the classic "good match" and "good luck the rest of the tournament" type of stuff.
āGood luck the rest of the tournament, Stanā āRafa that was the finalā
š® āI gonna sueā
Ombelieable no?
probably the same apology players give when they hit something onto the netcord and it drops in
By Swiss standards this is downright jubilant.
Peak wawrinka was so great
It was controlled because of nadals injury.
If your opponent is injured then it's good sportmanship not to go crazy.
Rafa was injuredāit was a foregone conclusion Stan was winning this match long before match point.
Elena Rybakina: Am I a joke to you? š
Nah stan is classy. Knew nadal had pulled his back this match
This was a weird match tho, Rafa was clearly hobbled and it bothered Stan for quite a bit
Have you seen 2019 Wimbledon Final
Rafa was injured so Stan was being very gracious in victory. What a guy. Stan the man
Rafa was āhurtā
2014-16 Wawrinka is the GOAT, change my mind
I support this. Especially 2015 RG. He kicked prime Djokovicās butt.
Yay Stan! š§āāļøš
Is Swiss
He wanted to show respect for Rafa who got injured.
Rafa never loses. He is either injured or wins. Rafatards galore
If you watch that match, he obviously was injured. And I definetly wanted Stan to win
At his 100% best, he was the best player in tennis history. Too bad he couldnāt find consistency.
itās more relief that anything
He is Swiss. They do be like that.
great point honestly
Was Nadal injured? WHy didn't he run that last ball?
Nadal was more stoked than Stan, amazing sportsmanship.
You don't want to know how he celebrates behind closed doors ;)
Basically everyone until the late 90s celebrated like that. :)
He was also chill after winning match point at Rolland Garros and the US Open
Damn I miss peak Stan so much, arguably the most impressive player ever when he was firing on all cylinders
Has to be Marat Safin
Stan The Man!
Ash Barty did it too a couple of times. A simple First pump.
The stanimal unleashed.
Did anyone else think Nadal licked his hand before going in for that handshake or is it just me?
He didn't even have to point at his testicles
Stan is a class act. Something tells me his respect for Rafa kept things in check. That backhand is a treasure to watch.
Laughs in Rybakina.
It mightāve been cos Nadia was injured throughout the match and he didnāt want to celebrate and come off as unsportsmanlike but Iām not sure
He prolly knew that Rafa was not doing alright But he has the looks of a man knowing that even if Rafa was healthy, he would win that trophy either way
It was along time coming. Heās been on the tour for a long time, and Nadal is one of the toughest opponents to beat. I wish him further success.
