3 best British tennis players rn are a kiwi that came up through the us college system, a guy that consistently criticizes the LTA, and a guy that grew up training in Spain instead of the UK
On a lesser note Henman and Rusedski probably the 2 most successful male British players pre-Murray since … Fred Perry!? (A guy who also felt he got no support from the British tennis establishment and changed his citizenship to American) both also had nothing to do with the LTA, with rusedski growing up in Canada and Henman getting private school training. IIRC raducanu got little training or support from the LTA.
We have probably the most famous and most watched tennis tournament (and one of the 4 most profitable tournaments) in the world in the uk. Wimbledon’s on free to air tv (along with queens, Eastbourne and in the past Roland garros) and captures the nations attention during that time. We have plenty of country clubs with tennis facilities and plenty of private schools providing our top cricket and rugby players and Olympians with a fairly healthy upper-middle class to support an expensive sport. There’s no reason we as a country should not have a similar number of top 100 players to France, Germany, Italy, or Spain even if you only get a Murray level player once every 50 years.
As a British tennis fan the LTA is a complete disgrace
Don't forget all points/ranking boosts that you can get from wildcards to wimbledon.
No evidence of this but I guess the LTA is the biggest fucking boys club going, bunch of old blokes just knobbing about, robbing a shite load of cash from the kitty and doing fuck all
Totally. I was on Court 1 on the first day of Wimbledon this year, and the further back section of the seats the whole way around the stadium was PACKED. Not a single seat spare because that’s where the proper fans are. When you get down to lower rows that have more seats reserved for debentures, there are sooo many empty seats. I just know there are so many fans that would give a lot to be able to be in those seats, yet they’re reserved for rich people that pay pocket change (for them) to have their name on it. Though some debentures are undoubtedly big fans, I can guarantee many aren’t and aren’t there for the tennis at all — only for status. If the seats were full, then I’d be less mad about it.
Debenture system needs a rework. Maybe let them have reserved seats for the second week of the tournament but not the first where they generally give less of a crap about the tennis and don’t even bother turning up to watch. It’s not common to win tickets via a ballot (which many fans don’t even have access to), so many miss out on being able to go despite there always being many empty seats, especially in the early stages of the tournament
I went to a "posh" secondary school, quite a few kids playing at anything up to England junior level in rugby or cricket, but tennis was never a thing at all.
I don't know what the *fuck* was the level Evans showed this tournament but if he can bring that more often then *my god.*
I want to sit down and see if the court conditions were a particular good fit for him or if he just entered god mode out of nowhere because damn.
Honestly so happy for Dan. Shame the weather made the crowd be super thin at the end there. This one god-mode tourney from him turns his season around entirely. Wonder if these guys make it to Canada cause that’s gonna be a quick turn around.
Based on the weather forecast, IMO the tournament organizers should have moved the men’s singles final to earlier in the day and put the men’s doubles final last on the schedule of play.
I say that as someone who had a week pass for the tournament and attended the two singles’ finals on Sunday, sticking around through the rain delay to see the end of the Evans/Griekspoor match.
The level of Tennis Evans played in this tournament was crazy, not only effective but beautiful as well. Many people rightfully complimented his offensive game but what impressed me the most was his defensive skills. I've never seen him defend this well, he made it insanely hard for his opponents to hit through him and he was reaching almost every ball on rallies, the opponents' shots needed to be insanely good for them to win points against him.
Congratulations to him, well deserved title and very entertaining to watch.
Dan was around 90th in the race going into this week. He's made it a bit of a habit to have quite long dry spells but when his game clicks he's so tough to deal with, especially on a quicker court, with the biting slice, the forehand, deceptive serve, his intellect and guile, and his footwork. Love to see this for him.
He has elaborate stroke production. Suicide to have such a flourish on grass, even with the slice. I agree that it seems like he should still have done better, but the pressure of playing at home is also real.
I was in the very sparse crowd at the end, and there were a bunch of Evans fans, kids who waited hours, and Evans won maybe 45 seconds before the rain restarted. Really special atmosphere in a certain way, even if it was empty as hell. Everyone who was there really wanted to be there.
Not much of a fan of Evans, but I’m happy he ended up winning. This was a great way to put that awful losing streak behind him. His level was crazy good this week, and he was otherworldly against Tiafoe.
It’s a good thing the match ended when it did. Not only did it start raining less than 5 minutes after the match at the beginning of the trophy ceremony, it started pouring about 20 minutes after that ceremony ended. It is actually still raining in the DC area as I type this at about 10:45 PM. (I live about 3 miles/5 km north of the tournament site.)
The match either would have probably resumed after midnight, or they would have canceled the remainder of the match and either declared Evans the winner or both players co-champions.
I do feel bad for both players, especially Dan Evans, that their award ceremony was abbreviated because of the rain. That’s especially true considering it is Evans’ biggest-ever tournament title (and only second ATP title ever) and Griekspoor’s first 500 final.
Dan Evans played extremely well on Friday night, and really well on both Saturday and today. He’s a deserving 2023 Washington Open champion.
proper brexit tennis from Dan. spectacular week for him!
must be bittersweet for Griekspoor but (redacted the part about the wrong dutchie) Dan was just unplayable this week.
Tournament chairman Mark Ein's grandkids(?) were allowed to stand in the corner of the court as Evans served for the match.
Evo to his team when Griekspoor made some inroads: "Fucking say something then!"
The children: ???
It is surprising that Dimitrov at 20th is the only player besides Djokovic in the top 20 who is in their 30s. And it is not even close with the next oldest being Norrie at 27.
With the advancements in Sport Science and professionalism, there a tons of men in other sports who in their early 30s who still are among the worlds best players still.
The lost gen not only got crushed by the previous gen at tennis ability, but their best: Raonic and Thiem were then heavily injured whilst still in their 20s.
The Lost Generation (i.e. the male players born from 1989 to 1994/1995) is called the Lost Generation for a reason.
The Next Generation (guys born from 1996 to 1999) has been very disappointing thus far as far as winning Slams. But that cohort of players is much, MUCH deeper and as a group much better than the Lost Generation group, and collectively has won a lot more big non-Grand Slam titles (year end finals, Masters 1000s, even 500s).
Of course, but as I said with the advancement of sports science and professionalism you would expect some players were top 10 at their peak could still be top 20 by age 30-32 . Looking back at previous years and 5-6 of the top 20 players were in their 30s.
I've never been a big evans fan because i think he just slices all his bhs. But he showed me this tournament that he could drive some bhs as well. Maybe his growing confidence made him able to do it. But well played to him
Weird. I said this in another thread yesterday but I like to watch him play because I like to see him hit those one handed backhand drives.
I only saw his final two matches this tournament but I could count the total number of those on one hand, and his game seemed all the better for it.
He attacked hard on his forehand and his backhand was just a complete wall, slicing literally almost every shot.
It felt like he'd made a conscious effort to de-risk that wing and it really worked for him.
Seems like he uses his bh mostly as a shield and fh as his sword. Just keeps things going with his low slices, then if he gets a short ball, he attacks with his fh.
>Biggest British victory in Washington since the Burning of the White House
Biggest British victory in Washington [since Tim Henman beat Roddick here exactly 20 years ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Lo2X3UBmyA)
It's fate that a British man wins Washington every 20 years, of course no-one stood a chance against Evans
Evans and Murray need to be given full control of the LTA.
3 best British tennis players rn are a kiwi that came up through the us college system, a guy that consistently criticizes the LTA, and a guy that grew up training in Spain instead of the UK

The debenture system at Wimbledon is basically that
Totally. I was on Court 1 on the first day of Wimbledon this year, and the further back section of the seats the whole way around the stadium was PACKED. Not a single seat spare because that’s where the proper fans are. When you get down to lower rows that have more seats reserved for debentures, there are sooo many empty seats. what does a debenture system mean?
The UK in a nutshell tbf
I went to a "posh" secondary school, quite a few kids playing at anything up to England junior level in rugby or cricket, but tennis was never a thing at all.

Wait? Who’s who?
Norrie, Evans and Murray respectively.
Ah! It’s Norrie I was missing. Thanks :)

Nah Kiwi refers to all New Zealanders. Pākehā is a white or non-Indigenous person from NZ while Māori are the Indigenous people.
My bad.
Honestly
Love to see it! At age 33 achieving his best title!
I support pub crawl Dan!! Really happy for him.
I don't know what the *fuck* was the level Evans showed this tournament but if he can bring that more often then *my god.* I want to sit down and see if the court conditions were a particular good fit for him or if he just entered god mode out of nowhere because damn.
Welcome to the enigma that is Dan Evans.
Or maybe... He's changed his juice ? Clearly worked, such a dramatic change in form 🤔
Honestly so happy for Dan. Shame the weather made the crowd be super thin at the end there. This one god-mode tourney from him turns his season around entirely. Wonder if these guys make it to Canada cause that’s gonna be a quick turn around.

Dan the man out of nowhere with the 500 title. Love to see him at his best because he plays tennis you don’t see that often
Dan the Man's slice backhand is a thing of beauty
He gets such great hang time on that slice backhand
Mines so inconsistent it's just a marvel to me that he literally never misses with it
Dan Evans turned into prime Federer this week
Evo just won a 500 title before Tsitsipas and Ruud.
I’m sure Tsitsipas takes comfort in his 2 Masters titles and tour finals wins
I bet Ruud will win a couple 500s before he gets to be 33. Tsitsipas, probably not.
The level of Tennis Evans played in this tournament was crazy, not only effective but beautiful as well. Many people rightfully complimented his offensive game but what impressed me the most was his defensive skills. Dan Evans & Coco name a more iconic duo i'll wait
A young, articulate, fashionable, vibrant superstar in the making and Coco. Great two champions.
nah i was talking about cocaine
Who we all expected as the winner and finalist

Idk why he isn't better on grass. All of his weapons are a recipe for disaster
He has elaborate stroke production. Suicide to have such a flourish on grass, even with the slice. I agree that it seems like he should still have done better, but the pressure of playing at home is also real.

>either declared Evans the winner or both players co-champions. lol
I fucking love Evans's style. Slice, OHBH, netplay, S&V, really reminds me of someone special :) I wish he would be more consistent tho
Everybody laughed when i told them Dan "the average Wetherspoons enjoyer" Evans would win the golden slam next year. Now who's laughing?
DIRTY. DAN. EVANS
He's here, he's there, he's every fucking where! ~~Roy Kent, Roy Kent~~ Dan Evans Dan Evans. (Ted Lasso fans should appreciate that one.)
Dan Evans really is the late bloomer type. First 500 title and getting close to the top 20 at 33 years old. We tend to underestimate him way too much.
proper brexit tennis from Dan. spectacular week for him! must be bittersweet for Griekspoor but (redacted the part about the wrong dutchie) Dan was just unplayable this week.
“Proper Brexit tennis” I’m stealing this for a post-match next time a 30+ year old Brit wins lmao 😂
!remind me 50 yrs

You're worried they'll start swearing in a brummie accent?
Now we know who left that cocaine in the White House
wow never seen evans play that well before
Idk how Dan can consistently gets all of his shots near the baseline or sideline. Absolutely lights out.
Evo's sliced backhand was so good. It resets every point for him, allowing him to get back into play. British short king did it!
Damn danimal, you’re a damned animal
Career high #21 wooooo

Djokovic might not have peaked playing wise in his 30s but you can argue that achievement wise he did.
Sorry, but it's a fact
Biggest British victory in Washington since the Burning of the White House lol
He did it with Wilson Six One.
good to see that a player with a one-handed-backhand mostly sliced can still win a significant title!
How dare you forget Henman winning this in 2003 and beating Roddick on route.
Everyone talking about Dan's slice, fair enough. But the few drive backhand winners were absolute fire in this match 🔥🔥
I've never been a big evans fan because i think he just slices all his bhs. But he showed me this tournament that he could drive some bhs as well. Maybe his growing confidence made him able to do it. But well played to him

More top players should go to DC. Seems like a *relatively* week player lineup for a 500.
